Baseball in Harrisburg
From the early days of baseball to the present, Harrisburg has fielded teams in amateur and professional leagues which included teams that were black, white and integrated. Harrisburg became the home of early integrated baseball when in 1890 the Harrisburg Ponies Baseball Club signed two black players, second baseman Frank Grant and third baseman Clarence Williams, to its otherwise white team. Frank Grant is considered to be one of the greatest baseball players of the nineteenth century. The Harrisburg Club played for the Middle States League which changed its name to the Eastern Interstate League but when Harrisburg left it for the Atlantic Association, it folded. In the Atlantic Association the Black players of the Harrisburg team were not welcomed as the only black players in the league and demands were made to release the two. Harrisburg refused to release Grant but released Williams as a compromise and the team was accepted into the league with one black player. Grant faced Harrisburg Giant c.1927 discrimination in the Atlantic Association but his team stood by him, even changing living quarters when the hotel that they normally lodged in, refused their black team mate. After the 1890 season the Atlantic Before he was known for producing the Winchester repeating rifle, Oliver Winchester was a Association folded. Grant returned to his former club the all black, Cuban Giants.
