When does the academic calendar start?
Our academic calendar starts in September and ends in June.
Are the Grades structured in the “American-style”?
Yes, we are a Grade 9 to Grade12 high school. Grade 9 is equivalent to the 3rd grade of Junior High School in Japan.
How many students are enrolled?
The total enrollment is normally about 306. About 35 are in Grade 9. About 28 are commuters. The proportion of boys to girls is close to 53/47.
Are all classes taught in English?
All our classes are taught in English except for Japanese. English is spoken throughout the working day. The School provides extra help for those who need it in English and Japanese. Please refer to Appendix 1 for more information on the curriculum.
Is it possible for students from Japan to keep up with classes taught in English?
As there is some time between the entrance examination and the start of the academic year, we provide online English classes. All students are expected to participate in these.
How much conversational English is necessary in daily life?
Daily life is conducted almost entirely in English. This is because the School is committed to graduating all students with proficient English.
Are classes separated in terms of levels?
Yes, the main subjects are separated depending on proficiency levels. Please refer to Appendix 1 for more information on the curriculum.
Do you have courses specified for liberal arts or science courses?
We do not have specified courses. However, students who aspire to attend the faculty of Medicine, Science and Technology, or Pharmaceuticals, will need to take certain designated science and mathematics courses in order to be eligible when choosing such faculties.
How do students study after school? Are there academic offerings after school?
In a boarding school, which Keio is almost entirely, there is no “after school”. Academic Extension (AE) classes, music lessons, clubs and sport fill the day in addition to core curriculum classes in the daily schedule. In the evenings students work in Evening Study Hall, when teachers are available to give support. There is also a Saturday Morning Program that includes classes in Art and Music, Debating and Public Speaking. Please refer to Appendix 1 for more information on AE.
What kind of extra-curricular activities do you have?
Please refer to Appendix 2 for more information on extra-curricular activities.
Is it possible to take individual piano lessons or other instruments besides extracurricular activities?
Yes, the Director of Music will arrange this for you.
If my parents return to Japan, is it possible to transfer to other Keio affiliated schools?
No, you cannot transfer to other Keio affiliated schools. If you are a commuter and your parents come back to Japan, you can become a boarder.
