The Kehillah School - 2024 Impact Report - Framing Our Future

Page 1

HELLO!

Dear Friends,

This year marks a significant milestone for Kehillah as we celebrate our 25th anniversary. It is an occasion that invites us to reflect on how far we’ve come and to look ahead at the bright future we are building together. The growth of our students and our school fills us with immense pride, and we are deeply grateful for the continued support of our community.

As the Head of School and a Kehillah Board member, as well as proud parents of current and former Kehillah students, we have the privilege of witnessing the impact of a Kehillah education. We are constantly inspired by the dedication of our exceptional faculty, who are at the very heart of the Kehillah experience. They not only provide college preparatory academics but also nurture an environment where students feel supported, cared for, and challenged in a way that balances warmth with academic rigor — a rare combination in our SF Bay Area.

Our shared responsibility is to ensure that this special balance is preserved and strengthened. With your help, we will enrich the student experience by adding more rigorous academic offerings, expanded activities and experiential learning opportunities, and crucial campus improvements and enhanced safety. This progress is fueled by the generosity of donors like you, those who believe in the transformative power of a Kehillah education.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the over 200 donors who helped ignite this new phase of growth by contributing in 2023 and 2024. As we continue to commemorate this milestone year, we invite you to join us in supporting the Kehillah Fund (K-Fund), our primary philanthropic initiative. Your contributions will directly impact our ability to provide equal access to Kehillah’s exceptional educational experiences for the next 25 years and beyond.

This year we have set an ambitious goal of raising $1.5 million, and we are confident that, together, we can achieve it.

Thank you, now and always, for your steadfast support.

With gratitude,

ABOUT KEHILLAH

Following our successful accreditation process and more than a year of comprehensive data-gathering, the Board of Trustees approved a new mission statement as well as an updated name and logo. Together, the updates better represent our community and reflect our strong and continued commitment to our Jewish roots.

MISSION STATEMENT

We offer a rich and challenging educational program guided by compassionate, expert educators.

• We inspire academic excellence, cultivate student voice, and foster a genuine sense of belonging.

• We embody the Jewish values of critical thinking, respectful dialogue, and the pursuit of justice.

• We empower students with curiosity, empathy, and agency to transform their experiences, their communities, and the world.

“ AT KEHILLAH, COMMUNITY MEANS FRIENDSHIP—FRIENDSHIP WITH MY PEERS AND WITH TEACHERS. DURING KABSHAB, WE WOULD GATHER

AS A SCHOOL, LAUGH,

PRAY,

AND JUST ENJOY BEING TOGETHER. AFTER I GRADUATE, I HOPE TO CARRY THE JEWISH VALUES I LEARNED AT KEHILLAH. VALUES LIKE TZEDEK AND TIKKUN OLAM, WHICH WERE WOVEN INTO EVERY ASPECT OF LIFE AT KEHILLAH. THE KINDNESS AND WARMTH OF EVERYONE MAKE THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY SOMETHING YOU CAN FEEL. — MICAH NASSI, 12TH GRADE

BELONG. BUILD. BECOME.

Kehillah is reaffirming our commitment to give every student a welcoming space where they can find belonging, build the skills to reach their goals, and become strong leaders by:

• holding a welcoming space for students to come as they are, express their diverse identities, build community, and forge meaningful relationships with teachers, peers, and staff.

• embracing an inquiry-based educational philosophy that positions students at the center of the learning process, not focused on imparting knowledge in a classroom but rather on faculty and students working together to build the skills students need to reach their goals–both academic and beyond.

• inspiring students to think critically, create boldly, and lead with purpose and passion in every facet of their time at Kehillah.

• striving to develop ethically engaged, academically prepared leaders attuned to issues of justice, equity, and fairness in both a local and global context.

To this end, everything we do at Kehillah is imbued with values that lie at the heart of the Jewish tradition: Community, Dialogue, Choice & Agency, Pursuit of Knowledge, Justice.

Building a school with exceptional academics in a nurturing environment begins with a faculty that is both wellqualified and dedicated to continuous learning. Below are some highlights of how Kehillah is enhancing its community of educators, both on campus and throughout the Bay Area.

NATIONAL GRANT ACHIEVEMENT

This year, Kehillah is honored to be one of just six schools nationwide to receive the prestigious Edward E. Ford Foundation matching grant. This recognition underscores our commitment to growth and development in alignment with our mission.

If we successfully raise matching private funds, this $75,000 grant will enable Kehillah to develop a comprehensive four-year curriculum focused on cultivating civic engagement skills and significantly enhancing empathy among our students. This grant will support the implementation of new, vital programming designed to empower students to engage in respectful and thoughtful dialogues across diverse perspectives, thereby fostering a more inclusive and understanding community. By partnering with USC’s C.A.N.D.L.E. Lab and Stanford’s Challenge Success, we will be able to measure the impact of our efforts and position our work as a model for other schools.

Our faculty and students have already begun integrating co-led and co-developed civil discourse, as demonstrated by the Just Community Model , and they are eager to expand upon these efforts, learn more, and serve as a catalyst for others.

We need your support to meet the $75,000 community match!

REGIONAL HOST CAMPUS

Kehillah has also been selected as one of only 11 schools or districts across the U.S. and Mexico— and the sole representative from the West Coast— to host the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning’s Science of Teaching and School Leadership Academy.

This Academy brings together educators, school leaders, and policymakers to deepen their understanding of research-based teaching and learning strategies, including Mind, Brain, and Education (MBE) science. MBE science offers tremendous potential for improving educational outcomes but is still underutilized.

Our Head of School, Dr. Daisy Pellant, is a recognized national expert in MBE, and several Kehillah faculty members are alumni of the Academy. This past summer, Dr. Pellant led the leadership track at the Academy, and Kehillah looks forward to hosting regional educators in 2025.

TEACHER TO STUDENT RATIO

As part of our school’s continued growth, we are deepening our commitment to offering every student a robust academic experience, empowering them to engage in challenging and sophisticated inquiry across our academic program. This includes the continued development of Kehillah Advanced Topics (KAT) courses, K-Term, and local, national, and international experiential learning opportunities.

BEFORE KEHILLAH, I WASN’T SURE WHAT I WAS PASSIONATE ABOUT. BEING HERE MADE ME REALIZE THAT I WANT TO MAJOR IN GRAPHIC DESIGN. TAKING BOTH DIGITAL DESIGN CLASSES AT KEHILLAH SPARKED MY INTEREST, AND MS. CHOUHAN HELPED GUIDE ME IN DISCOVERING MY PASSION EARLY ON IN HIGH SCHOOL. — MAX WASSERSTEIN, 12TH GRADE

ALUMNI PERSPECTIVE

Right now, I’m looking across an array of desks, manned by the best AI engineers in the world. Across the way, I see my younger brother, Matan, the CEO and cofounder of this bleeding-edge AI startup we’re all relentlessly building together. I often think about how we both got here, and how lucky we are to be working together. I think back to the last time we really got to build and learn side by side, and that takes me all the way back to when we were both students at Kehillah.

I walked into Kehillah for the first time as a relatively aimless student. I had no idea what I wanted to do as a career. My parents pushed me towards things like biology, or medicine, but those never felt like my own authentic interests, and that resulted in a lack of internal motivation to excel in my studies. Meanwhile, my brother Matan was eating up mathematics for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It was clear he had found his passion, and clear that I had not yet found mine.

It wasn’t until I made a new friend in my first year at Kehillah – who actually encouraged me to take my first studio art class – that I had finally gotten a glimpse into what my future would look like. In my 10th-grade year, I took Studio Art with Ms. Jen Idleman. Ms. Idleman’s passion and love for art and design conveyed a seriousness in the subject I hadn’t previously shared, and she inspired me to pursue Product Design. I found a real passion and ended up taking studio art, digital art, and AP Art and Design in the following years. I was able to experiment with media and tools to build a strong portfolio that would help me apply to the best design schools in the country. Through it all, I felt Ms. Idleman in my corner, supporting me and pushing me to deliver my best work.

I also felt a newfound freedom at Kehillah to explore topics beyond my career aspirations. I took guitar and dance and even ended up performing with my brother during halftime of one of Kehillah’s basketball games. I discovered a talent for theatre thanks to the late, great Mr. James Gunn, who also taught me to believe in myself (while also not taking myself too seriously). I learned how to think critically and see the world through different lenses in Mr. Levin’s Jewish studies classes.

When I enrolled in Rhode Island School of Design, I was surprised to discover that I was a step ahead of my peers. Not only did I have more experience with various design programs, Kehillah had also helped maintain my sense of childlike wonder and willingness to take creative risks that many of my peers had already lost. Their schools hadn’t nourished their inner light. Kehillah had kept the world more colorful for me.

I know a lot more today than I did when I was in high school. My art and design skills have especially grown. But it is all built on the foundation I developed while at Kehillah. Every single teacher that believed in me and encouraged me, every moment, and every friendship has made me into the man I am today.

Thank you, Kehillah!

KEHILLAH ADVANCED TOPICS

Kehillah is proud to launch Kehillah Advanced Topics (KAT) courses this school year. These are independently designed, accelerated courses that empower students to pursue their passions and engage in sophisticated inquiry across our academic program. KAT courses are UC-accredited and allow us to infuse our most advanced course offerings with innovative curricula that develop skills in critical analysis, conceptual problem solving, and collaboration — whether students are exploring 3D modeling in multivariable calculus or researching topics across neuroscience, geopolitics, philosophy, and more.

COURSE OFFERINGS THIS YEAR INCLUDE:

• The Modern Middle East

• Beyond Behavior: Critical Insights into Human Psychology

• Multivariable Calculus

• Theories of Space & Time

BOTH KEHILLAH ADVANCED TOPICS (KAT) AND K-TERM REVEAL OUR SHARED COMMITMENT TO AN EDUCATION THAT CULTIVATES CURIOSITY, INSPIRES DISCOVERY, AND EMPOWERS YOUNG PEOPLE TO THINK CRITICALLY AND CREATIVELY.

- DR. ROY DANOVITCH, ASSOCIATE HEAD OF SCHOOL

K-TERM

Also new this year, Kehillah is introducing K-Term, a week of expansive and immersive project-based learning in January 2025. Starting this Fall, students will be able to select from a rich portfolio of hands-on, interdisciplinary electives to explore, which will help them dig into specialized knowledge, collaborate with their peers, and generate new insights in ways they aren’t usually able to in classroom settings. This week-long intensive will culminate in a formal exhibition of learning, which may take a variety of forms including performances, publications, presentations, and competitive tournament play.

EXAMPLES OF K-TERM IMMERSIVES INCLUDE:

• Exploring history, culture, and linguistics through food and cooking

• Investigating real-life case files with hands-on forensic science techniques

• Thinking beyond our traditional sense of dimension and exploring shape in 4D

• Discovering how math and biblical text converge

• Learning how light affects visual perception

• Creation, development, and the design of video games

THE REEL STUDENT PERSPECTIVE

Lots of students like to watch movies.

But Graham Stuart’s passion for film is next level. He started watching movies with his family as a young kid, and today — when he’s not juggling his coursework at Kehillah — Graham watches a movie every couple of days. He watches not just as a spectator, like most of us, but as a directorin-training – one day, Graham hopes to make his own movies.

Kehillah’s Reel Perspective course furthered his interest. Taught by Visual & Performing Arts

Dean Amy Cole-Farrell, Reel Perspective surveyed different eras of filmmaking and film criticism. Students in the class even produced their own short films — that’s a screenshot below of Graham’s film, The Struggle for Piano Playing Perfection.

Outside the classroom, Graham has served as the Student Producer for two short movies

created with the Young Actors’ Theatre Camp, “August” and “Arlo.” “August” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner (2023) and won Best Longform Short Film at the Toronto LGBTQ+ Film Festival (2023), and “Arlo” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival’s American Pavilion and was nominated for the Emerging Filmmaker’s Award (2024).

In addition to producing films, Graham has served as an intern for Conley Media Productions for the last two years, where he has developed, written, and co-produced a treatment for a short film about the only Wimbledon champion decided by forfeit. Finally, Graham has developed a website to share his love of cinema called Cinema Scope.

Graham, a senior, hopes to study film in college. When he does, he’ll take the unique perspective he honed at Kehillah with him — the reel perspective.

WHAT DREW ME TO KEHILLAH WAS THE ABSOLUTE COMMITMENT TO THE PURSUIT OF EDUCATION. WHAT SURPRISED ME WHEN I ARRIVED WAS THE WARMTH AND CONFIDENCE OF THE STUDENTS: TOWARDS THEIR TEACHERS AND EACH OTHER. EVERY STUDENT APPROACHED ME WITH AN OUTSTRETCHED HAND (LITERALLY AND METAPHORICALLY) AND A WARM WELCOME, AND I SAW THAT FRIENDLINESS BEING OFFERED ACROSS GRADES AND TOWARDS THE NEW STUDENTS AS WELL.

EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL

One of the key elements of Kehillah education is learning together inside and outside of the classroom. Each excursion provides students an opportunity to grow together and as citizens of the world, becoming more socially aware, engaged, and committed to a more just and kind community.

Every year, our faculty works diligently to create opportunities for our students to travel domestically and internationally, requiring months of intentional planning, preparation, and strong partnerships between faculty, students, and families.

This year we are redoubling our efforts by:

• increasing our trip preparation sessions for both students and parents; rolling out a brand new Educational Travel Handbook; and

• bringing back international travel for our juniors and seniors.

As always, the health and safety of our students and faculty is our top priority, so all educational travel programming, including timing and location, is subject to change; however, travel will continue to be integral to a Kehillah education, and we will work toward making these opportunities accessible to all.

TRIPS THIS YEAR INCLUDE:

• 9th Grade: Social Justice in Los Angeles, March 3-7, 2025

• 10th Grade: Civil Rights Tour of the South, March 2-9, 2025

• 11th Grade: Jewish Heritage in Spain, March 2-13, 2025

• 12th Grade, Option #1: Nuances & Complexities in Israel, March 2-13, 2025

• 12th Grade, Option #2: Harmony & Conflict in Central Europe (Prague, Vienna Budapest), March 2-13, 2025

KEHILLAH TRIPS ARE ALWAYS THE PERFECT BALANCE OF LEARNING, TIKKUN OLAM, AND FUN. SO MUCH CLASS BONDING!

THEATRE

KEHILLAH THEATRE TRIP TO THE OREGON SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL

This fall, Kehillah Theatre brought students in grades 10-12 on an excursion to the acclaimed Oregon Shakespeare Festival in beautiful Ashland. Students had the opportunity to attend four Festival plays, a backstage and campus tour, a Workshop on Shakespeare, conversations with Festival artists, and more. Faculty chaperones included Amy Cole-Farrell, Dean of Visual and Performing Arts, and Dale Pagano, Dean of English.

2024-25 SHOWS

• Fall Play: Peter/Wendy by Jeremy Bloom (November 17-21, 2024)

• Spring Musical: Once Upon a Mattress by Dean Fuller, Jay Thompson, and Marshall Barer

WHEN I JOINED KEHILLAH TO START THE MUSIC PROGRAM, I PLANNED TO TEACH FOR ONLY ONE SEMESTER. I AM NOW IN MY 21ST YEAR. THROUGHOUT MY TENURE, OUR GOAL HAS REMAINED THE SAME: TO FACILITATE KNOWLEDGE WITH LOVE AND PASSION . WE HAVE ACHIEVED THIS OBJECTIVE EVERY YEAR, AND OUR STUDENTS HAVE GONE ON TO KEEP THE LANGUAGE AND ART OF MUSIC ALIVE IN THEIR HEARTS. THIS LOVE AND DEDICATION TRANSLATE INTO EXCELLENT CITIZENSHIP, CREATIVITY, AND ENJOYMENT FOR LIFE, WHICH OUR ALUMNI CONTINUE TO DEMONSTRATE ALL OVER THE WORLD. PROVIDING AN EDUCATIONAL FRAMEWORK THAT ALLOWS THIS MINDSET TO THRIVE IS WHAT WE DO SO WELL AT KEHILLAH.

CAMPUS

As part of Kehillah’s continued dedication to providing our students with a comfortable and safe learning environment, we are making some improvements to our campus! These include our new safety gates, sports courts for our students to play on, and new decks for the Kikar.

Thank you to Locus Architecture for providing these renderings of our upcoming campus improvements.

ALUMNI PERSPECTIVE

Only 32 percent of Americans say they trust the media “a great deal” or “a fair amount” to “report the news in a full, fair and accurate way,” according to a 2023 Gallup poll. That’s why three recent Kehillah alumni earlier this year launched their own AI-powered non-partisan news platform: Belstad ( belstad.com). The trio developed an AI model that scans stories from thousands of news publications and creates concise, digestible briefings and podcasts for users. These briefings consider multiple perspectives with the goal of producing news that is as free of bias as possible.

Co-founders Zach Berman, Rishi Goel, and Josh Lipman graduated from Kehillah in 2023 and launched Belstad in early 2024. While they attend colleges on different coasts (Zach and Josh are at UCLA while Rishi is at Swarthmore, outside of Philadelphia), they believe their high school experience helped develop a strong foundation that has enabled them to succeed together.

“One of the most important things when building in collaboration is that the founders are close and have strong relationships,” said Josh. “Kehillah fostered that strong friendship between Rishi, Zach, and me.”

Belstad features content in six sections: U.S., World, Business, Tech, Science, and Health, with more to come. The AI-generated articles link to the mainstream news sources Belstad used to create the new content. News sources are categorized as either left-leaning, center, or rightleaning. The idea behind Belstad is to balance the different orientations.

During their four years together at Kehillah, the three friends could always be found huddled together talking about anything and everything. Classes like AP Physics and Jewish studies helped foster the critical thinking necessary not only for the computer science knowledge needed to create and operate Belstad but also for more general success in college and beyond.

Kehillah is also where the trio developed their interests and aptitudes for programming through courses like Dr. Baharav’s Data Structures and Algorithms, and it’s where they first gained exposure to the world of journalism through Senior Projects. Though small moments overall, they built the foundation for them to build and grow Belstad.

Check out www.belstad.com (or get the app at apps.apple.com/us/app/belstad/id6618159376) and cheer on these amazing Kehillah alumni!

FUNDING OUR FUTURE

In the 2023-24 school year, Kehillah faculty engaged in a professional development session with San Francisco’s BATS Improv. The focus of the training was creatively challenging our reflexive “yes, but” responses and embracing a “yes, and” perspective.

“Yes, and” also refers to our fundraising efforts.

There is nothing more important than providing our students with the best educational experience possible, and there are many ways to provide support.

General Support

• The Kehillah Fund is our primary fundraising vehicle. Known as the K-Fund, these resources go toward financial aid, faculty salary increases, professional development, and more. The K-Fund helps provide our most core services.

Specialized Support

• We are currently raising $75,000 to support the matching grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation.

• Enhancing the interior of our building to create an even greater sense of community and pride will take $400,000.

• Work continues to improve the Kikar in particular and the campus more broadly. We need $750,000 to make all of the desired improvements.

• The Senior Legacy Travel Fund helps ensure that every student can go on the experiential travel opportunities each year. We are developing this fund to $1 million, after which it will provide aid in perpetuity.
