Who We Are

Touching lives to bring back a smile A touch, a little care, a listening ear, a small gesture is all it takes to bring joy into someone’s eyes. We find great joy in dedicating our time for the community. The smiles and the happiness that we receive in return for our time is priceless.

From our experience, we have seen that more than anything that we give, the biggest positive impact is generated when we use our time and skills to bring the appropriate sustainable solution for people’s dayto-day problems. It is our involvement in resolving these tough challenges that prove more beneficial to them. Being with the people at the levels they are able to relate to is hugely appreciated. There are many problems that cannot be resolved by merely providing funds. We are required to sit down with people, understand the barriers they face, and collectively derive the best solutions to eliminate those barriers.

We believe that this is where the community requires us most, to support in forming strategies and delivering innovative ideas to remove their biggest hurdles.

While we extend our efforts to develop solutions that can provide the community with better health services, hygienic living, comfortable habitats and superior

We believe a sustainable society can be achieved only by nurturing its future generations. This is why we expend a lot of our efforts into reforming the public education system and uplifting women’s lives and livelihoods. Focusing our efforts to do the best we can within the few initiatives we take up and bringing lasting solutions is currently our immediate priority.

Working with the community is an enriching process, where we get to learn continuously about people, their cultures and the obstacles they face in the path to development. In the course of the journey, we extend our best and we evolve, while learning from failures and replicating solutions for common problems.

Integrating business strengths to serve the society At the Foundation, we harness the power of our business verticals to make a difference to the society. We believe in holistically involving ourselves in the projects that we support.

We strategize effectively by identifying partners with whom we can collaborate for expertise and technology know-how.

Our parent company - KEF Holdings and its business verticals proactively contribute with their project management expertise, technological proficiency and labor at different stages of the project.

KEF Holdings is a registered corporation based in Singapore with six business divisions – healthcare, education, infrastructure, investments, agriculture and metals. The company aims at making a difference to society at large and believes in the upliftment of the society through improving health, bettering education, building infrastructure within the minimum possible cost and time, providing a means of sustainable living, and preserving resources.

The fund raised by the Foundation for projects are presently sourced from the personal donations of Shabana Faizal &

Faizal Kottikollon, and the KEF Holdings.

The funds are allocated flexibly and with fairness to meet the needs of the beneficiary initiatives.

We also seek partnerships with government bodies, business organizations, individuals, and local networks to meet the objectives of our engagement. Local ownership and capacity development for sustainability guide our strategy in forging partnerships.

What we Support - Education

Adding wings to dreams through education Education is the road that leads children to discover their full potential in life. We believe that every child deserves the right to quality education and it should be accessible without any discrimination at all levels of the society.

We support initiatives that provide each child with quality education offering them a door of opportunities to walk through for carving their future. We also strive to support teachers through capacity building opportunities and enable them to engage effectively with students.

We focus on adapting education systems for the next generation to make it a platform that develops a child’s cognitive (thinking skills), linguistic (language skills), physical and psychosocial (emotional and social) needs.

What we Support - Education

Changing the skyline of education – GVHSS Nadakkavu PRISM (Promoting Regional Schools to International Standards through Multiple Interventions) was flagged off at Government Vocational Higher Secondary Schools for Girls (GVHSS) Nadakkavu, Kozhikode, to overcome the numerous challenges faced by government schools in Kerala. In addition to infrastructure revamp, the project ensures scholastic excellence and coscholastic development. The performance of the school is being monitored with yearly metrics against set goals with the results already indicating three-fold improvement. While the overall trend for admissions in government schools in Kerala was on a constant decline, this pattern has reversed at GVHSS Nadakkavu. For each vacant seat, we receive a minimum of 3 applications.

Spreading a world of better education Drawing inspiration from the PRISM model, we are on the ‘Mission 100’ program which will revamp the infrastructure, facilities and operations in top 100 eligible schools selected through a meticulous process. We are aiming to replicate the model in 14 districts by 2016 and reach 100 schools in the State by 2020, thereby taking quality education to 250,000 children in the state in a span of five years and making a difference in the lives of over 1 million family members.

Promoting Research and Learning The foundation funded the study and research of Precast Construction Technology in the Civil Engineering Department of Manipal Institute of Technology. We will build the physical infrastructure required to promote, enhance, research and evolve the technology of precast design and engineering used in the construction sector of India.

Future Focus: Mission 100

Social Development through Transformation in Education PRISM (Promoting Regional Schools to International Standards through Multiple Interventions) is a flagship program which Faizal and Shabana Foundation has been leading since 2012. This intervention, in an over 120 year old Girls school in Kozhikode (Calicut) of Northern Kerala, India, is being lauded as a model initiative. Conceptualized and initiated by Mr. Pradeep Kumar, the local Member of Legislative Assembly, Kozhikode, Kerala PRISM has grown truly international by the involvement of Foundation.

True to its name - PRISM - the project envisages the students graduating from the school blooming in all colours. Even though the immediate focus of PRISM is to impact the lives of girl students at school, the project is also to support women of the local community to have better access to facilities for their well-being. Since the involvement of the Faizal and Shabana Foundation the pace of the Nadakkavu intervention has enhanced several fold. The intervention is holistic: A. Scholastic; B. Co-Scholastic; C. Nutritious Food; D. Up-keeping and Maintenance; E. Leadership, Management and Monitoring; and F. Alumni and Community Interaction.

Future Focus: Mission 100

PRISM has shown that it’s possible to completely transform a Government School. In less than one year of its launch at Government Vocational Higher Secondary School for Girls, Nadakkavu, Kozhikode, Kerala, India (GVHSS, Nadakkavu); • GVHSS it has been ranked among the top 10 Government Schools of India by Education World Magazine.

• There has been a 200% increase at the High School level and 300% increase at the Higher Secondary level in the number of all A+ graded students.

• Students have started believing in themselves and are aspiring to become top professionals and bureaucrats from a situation where most only aspired to finish school let alone pass.

• There has been an increase in new application for admission. In 2014, there were three new applications for every vacant seat. This is how the trends set in a situation where students are moving out of government schools in rest of the country.

• The confidence level of the teachers and students have gone up considerably.

Based on the success of the PRISM project at GVHSS – Nadakkavu, the Faizal and Shabana Foundation is set to replicate the model in 100 more schools across Kerala. The proposal that was submitted to the Government of Kerala has been included in the budget of 2015. The implementation of the project will be in collaboration with the Government, Elected representatives, Corporates and Business houses, Private individuals, Parent Teacher Associations, School Alumni and all those interested in enhancement of quality in public education.

It is envisaged that by 2016 there will be one such school in every district of Kerala and by 2020, the State of Kerala will have 100 such schools. It is estimated that each school will have at least 2,500 children making it 250,000 children reached. At a conservative estimate of 4 in a family, the direct impact of Mission 100 will be at least one million persons in Kerala and the social impact of the same will reach one third of the population in Kerala – 10 million.

Superior, timely and affordable health care for all Putting health first. We, at the Faizal & Shabana Foundation, believe healthy children portray a healthy society. To foster and safeguard their health and well-being is not only key to their lifeexperiences but to the entire world.

Social care, good nutrition, healthy lifestyle, environmental improvements and initiatives play a vital role in promoting and protecting children and the younger generation’s health. We work seamlessly to plan and deliver health care services in the best possible manner and to this end, we support research and studies that devise measures to eradicate infectious diseases and malnutrition. Our aim is to provide kids and their families with excellent, timely and affordable health care.

What we Support - Health Care

Catering to the needs of autistic children The experiences and observations gained through the Foundation’s outreach and extension programs indicated the limited facilities that Kerala offers to autistic children.

This inspired the Foundation to set up the KEF Safiya Autism Centre in Mahe, Kerala as a research-based center comprising a special needs school, as well as a vocational education and rehabilitation center catering to the needs of autistic children and help them adapt to society.

Towards a future devoid of cancer and dementia Cancers figure among the leading causes of death worldwide. More research to aid early detection and treatment is a means to reduce cancer mortality. Similarly, with one in three elderly people dying of Alzheimer’s, a world devoid of dementia remains a dream. We rendered our support to the University of Sharjah for the design and discovery of lead drug prototypes targeting Alzheimer’s and cancer conditions.

Fulfilling the needs of children with special needs The Foundation is closely working with the

Spastics Society of Karnataka (Centre for Developmental Disabilities), which provides diagnostic and intervention services for children with developmental disabilities. Through the NGO, we extend our support in providing medical, diagnostic, therapy, education and vocational training facilities for children with special needs.

The NGO has a team of multi-disciplinary professionals and para professionals who assist the children and their family members in this process of rehabilitation.

What we Support - Sustainable Livelihood

Planting the seeds of sustainable livelihood As the Chinese proverb goes – give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

More than 60% of the population in India still relies on farming for their sustenance.

The agricultural systems that significantly contribute to the domestic GDP of India are subsistence farming, organic farming, and industrial farming. The Foundation is currently focusing on organic farming initiatives to promote livelihood and health.

Through the organic farm project, the livelihood of 5,000 farmers and their families will be upgraded every year with adequate training imparted for organic farming technologies and techniques.

Advancement of villages In an effort to improve the quality of lives of people in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu state, the Faizal and Shabana Foundation has taken up an integrated community development project focused on sustainable livelihood. The project, which covers eight villages, is being implemented with a participatory approach and the PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal) has also been completed. The project will address the concern areas with the help of community members who will make a thorough needs assessment.

What we Support - Sustainable Livelihood

Krishnagiri Village Development Project: Under Krishnagiri district Ennegol is one of the most backward Panchayat (Panchayat is the lowest strata of Governance in a district in India under the three-tier system of administration). Ennegol panchayat comes under Vepanapalli block of Krishnagiri district and consists of eight villages.

Faizal and Shabana Foundation will carry out a holistic community development intervention in Ennegol. The focus is on education, health, sustainable livelihood, and youth development.

Women, children and youth are the targets through whom this intervention is being done.

The Faizal & Shabana Foundation commissioned Praxis Institute for Participatory Practices* to undertake a panchayat-level micro-planning study at Ennegol Panchayat. The study has explored the social, political and economic scenario of the village and a phase-wise intervention (under short – medium - and long - term tasks) towards the integrated development of Ennegol Panchayat has been finalised. Reaching out at the family level, the goal of the project is quality of life enhancement of the people.

Praxis - Institute for Participatory Practices is a Non Profit specialising in participatory approaches to sustainable development which aims to enable excluded people to have an active and influential say in their own equitable and sustainable development.

What we Support - Youth Development

Strengthening the youth to build a stronger future Youth is the backbone of a nation’s future. To create an environment of learning, development and growth for children, and put the nation on the track of progress, we must ensure economic security of their families. To do that, we work alongside communities to help vulnerable parents and families build a sustainable livelihood by providing them the access to sustained income and financial literacy.

Promoting sports SEPT (Sports and Education Promotion Trust) was established in Kozhikode, Kerala, to promote sports education and development in India with a focus on football. Instituted in 2004, the Trust has set up 41 centers called ‘Football Nurseries’ spread across 11 districts in Kerala. SEPT also conducts targeted sports initiative to hunt for the talented yet less privileged children from rural, tribal and coastal areas.

Support for aspiring sports stars The Foundation’s motto of ‘Giving to create Impact’ is scaling new heights and the team is opening up new horizons of joy in the lives of youngsters through sports. The support is a unique initiative that is designed to discover and encourage the sporting talents

in children. This is an initiative being carried out in UAE. Improving the quality of education by delivering state-of-the-art infrastructure and environment remains the Foundation’s prime focus and this initiative will instill the spirit of sports among children.

What we Support - Humanitarian Assistance

Restoring the smile, compassionately The Foundation has been involved in unique projects that generate a positive impact on the lives of the people in our societies.

Natural and manmade disasters irrevocably devastate the lives of people. In such events, we lend our shoulder for moral support and confidence to re-build their world. We believe in taking every small step to provide medical, educational and housing support to restore normalcy in their lives.

Lending a hand at a time of calamity The 2010 Haiti earthquake with its catastrophic magnitude had affected the lives of an estimated three million people.

As per the UN Human Development Index, Haiti ranked 145 out of the 169 countries.

Moreover, 70% of the people in Haiti were living on less than USD 2$ per day.

The Foundation conducted a charity marathon ‘Run for Haiti’ to raise relief funds for the people in Haiti. This drew the participation of more than 700 individuals. The funds raised were subsequently allocated to the victims of the earthquake through the UAE Red Crescent (UAERC).

Lighting a billion lives Providing sustainable energy to all citizens of the world is today a key challenge. Clean and affordable energy is elementary for enriching lives.

The task is massive but can be achieved through the TERI (The Energy and Resources

Institute) initiative – ‘Light A Billion Lives’ campaign. The campaign aims at replacing kerosene lanterns in the less privileged villages of India with the environment-friendly alternative of solar lights. The support provided by the Foundation has enabled the campaign to benefit more than 65 villages spread across the three States of India Orissa, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, impacting around 16,000 lives.

• The Foundation contributes to the TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute) initiative launched by Nobel Prize winner Dr. Rajendra Pachauri through the ‘Light a Billion Lives’ campaign to replace kerosene lanterns in villages with the eco-friendly solar alternative.

2012 • Pentair renamed ETC Community Center as the Shabana and Faizal Community Centre in recognition of the founders’ success and dedication to the community at large.

• Built a hostel that provides food and accommodation for tribal and orphaned girls in the Kasargod district of Kerala.

• Upgraded the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School for Girls, Nadakkavu in Kozhikode, Kerala under the PRISM (Promoting Regional Schools to International Standards through Multiple Interventions) model.

• New classrooms, toilets, science & computer labs, indoor gymnasium, astroturf stadium for football and hockey and an industrial kitchen and dining hall were constructed in a period of less than 10 months using precast technology.

• The Foundation signed a MoU with Manipal Institute of Technology for Endowment for Introducing Precast Technology Study & Research.

• Through Project Gracious, the Foundation is helping people build homes in their native place, who otherwise would never be able to have a home of their own.

• GVHSS, Nadakkavu ranked among the top 5 Government Schools of India by Education World magazine.

• Faizal Kottikollon received the SBT Prathibha Samman Award in recognition of the services rendered through Faizal & Shabana Foundation for upliftment of the under-privileged in society and for the numerous charitable initiatives throughout India and UAE. • Received the A P Aslam Prathibha Puraskaram for lasting and indelible contributions to the society.

Sustainable equity for community development With an emphasis on education, youth, sustainability, safety, health, environment and security, we engage stakeholders in having effective dialogs that result in community betterment.

Before initiating a task, we listen to the concerns of the community, assess the barriers, understand their expectations, and weigh solution options.

Assess Need: We conduct in-depth study of any project before we decide to initiate or support it.

Set Goals: Being mission-driven, the targets that we need to achieve from the initiative

are decided prior to the intervention.

Continuously Monitor: We regularly reassess and strictly monitor the progress of the initiative against its goals.
