The month of May brings a whirlwind of emotions for many families. There’s the joy of knowing a break from the school year grind is just around the corner—and then there’s the exhaustion of dragging our kids across that “end of the school year” finish line. Let’s be honest—they’ve been mentally checked out since spring break! As I’ve said many times before, May is one busy month for moms and dads, and it’s no coincidence that we celebrate Moms during May—because goodness knows they deserve it. Don’t worry, Dads—your day is right around the corner in June!
Growing up, my mom was the one who made everything happen. She organized the schedules, packed the lunches, cooked the meals, did the laundry, took care of us when we were sick—you name it, she did it. My dad helped, too, but mom was definitely the command center. Now, in my own home, my husband Brad jumps in to help when needed with meals, carpools, and whatever else needs doing. I truly appreciate the shared effort. Experiencing the day-to-day reality of raising kids has given me a whole new appreciation for my mother and the many sacrifices she made.
This month, we’re honoring all the moms—and anyone who played that role in your life—with a heartfelt feature: Sarah Lyons’ article, How Motherhood Made Me Appreciate My Mom. It’s a touching reminder to reach out to those who did “all the things” for you and let them know just how much they’re appreciated.
We’re also celebrating another major milestone—our graduates! Talk about emotional whiplash. Graduation and the transition to the next chapter is a huge moment for both kids and parents. If your child is heading off to college, chances are you’re already thinking about what they’ll need to take with them. When my girls left for college, they were all about the room décor—but not so much the practical stuff. That’s why I wish I’d had Pam Molnar’s 15 Essential Items Missing From Your College Packing List. Number 12 was especially appreciated by my girls. They laughed a bit when I sent it with them, but boy, were they had it when it was needed. I made sure it was fully stocked with all the things.
And as we wrap up the school year, summer is just around the corner! Whether you’re planning a full vacation or a relaxing staycation, we’ve got you covered. If you’re heading out of town, don’t miss Tanni Haas, Ph.D.’s article on Money-Saving Apps For Your Summer Vacation—you’ll definitely want to have those tools in your pocket! Looking for more local fun? Stay tuned for next month’s issue featuring a massive roundup of local Summer Fun Activities.
To all the amazing moms and mother figures: Happy Mother’s Day! And to the Class of 2025—congratulations! Wishing you all a joyful, restful, and fun start to summer.

When children tend to ask repetitive “What If?” questions, they may run a little anxious. Anxiety is the brain’s way of thinking through what could go wrong in a situation, prompting us to prepare, and telling us to act. We are anxious when we cross the street because we need to look both ways first to remain safe. We are anxious about tests because we know studying is required to increase our chances of doing well. To resolve anxiety, we must embrace the uncomfortable thoughts and feelings long enough to create an effective plan of action. What we can’t do with anxious thoughts and feelings is distract ourselves from them because this causes them to increase.
which is the ability to adapt well in the face of adversity. If you take the time to sit with your children when they struggle with anxiety, encourage them to create a plan, and help them act, you are teaching them the skills they need to successfully address anxious thoughts and feelings.
Parents often dismiss or resolve their children’s anxious thoughts and feelings. This response is detrimental because it prevents children from building psychological resilience,
Practical Tips for Anxious Moments:
• Children are only able to emotionally regulate when the adults around them are regulated. Do not let your child’s anxious thoughts and feelings overwhelm you. Learn to stay in the moment and comfort yourself with self-compassion. For example, you may need to say to yourself, “My child is upset because math is very difficult for her. I am a great mother; she is a wonderful child; we are just having a hard moment.” If you cannot remain calm, give everyone a break and readdress the issue later.
comfortable with being uncomfortable. For example, if your son is frustrated that blocks are falling while he is building a tower, allow him to be frustrated and encourage him to keep trying. When you rush over to solve the problem for him or correct his frustration, you have inhibited his opportunity to learn frustration tolerance. Teaching your children to wait, take turns, lose well, etc., are other ways to teach frustration tolerance.

• The “big picture” goal is to help your children understand anxiety as a “warning sign” to prepare and act, but that is not where we start. The first step is for them to become
• As your children mature, they begin learning to embrace discomfort, prepare, and act independently. You can help them through this process by encouraging them to think about the worst-case scenario and then work backward on how to prevent it.
• As they enter their teenage years, encourage them to create a plan and then discuss it with you. If their plan is adequate, encourage them to execute it and then follow through and discuss what they can learn from the experience when similar problems arise in the future.
• Make sure that you help your children focus on what is in their control. For example, praise them for how hard they study, not only “good” grades. Compliment the amount of time they practice for a sport more than their performance in the game. We want to help them live out the saying, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”

“This event was a beautiful reminder of how our community comes together to make sure everyone feels seen, celebrated, and included,” said Jennifer Flad, Executive Director of The Exceptional Foundation of the Gulf Coast.
Brenda Copeland, Agent Success Manager & Associate Broker with Ashurst Niemeyer, spent the morning helping participants hunt for eggs—receiving lots of love in return. “There is nothing better than seeing the joy on their faces,” Brenda said. “I came to help and left with a full heart.”
Sharon Price, Marketing Director for Level Property Management Group, added, “We don’t just manage properties in this community—we live here, we love it here, and we do our best to truly show up for the people who make it so special. Since 2005, The Fairhope Rotary Steak Cook-off has brought to Fairhope a unique combination of searing Western BBQ-style steaks, Mardi Gras Carnival atmosphere and a chance to “see and be seen” at one of the most fun annual events hosted on the Eastern Shore. A whole year’s worth of planning comes together each May when teams of both professional chefs and local luminaries test their epicurean grilling skills on fine steaks. The event kicks off on Saturday evening when the gracious merchants along South Bancroft Street between the campus of Coastal Alabama Community College and adjacent to Fairhope’s French Quarter shutter their stores and relinquish the street to every manner of wood- and charcoal-fired grills, from custom BBQ trailers to Texas Smokers. Rules specify that only authentic wood grilling can be used, and as the coals are beginning to get just right, the festival attendees come through the gates and the band starts to get under way. It is like being invited to the most prestigious tailgate event and then getting to sample everyone’s steaks, along with all of the fixings. Each year there are opportunities for sponsorships, including cooking teams. This year’s event will be held Saturday, May 10, 2025. Admission tickets are $75 (+$6.88 fee) and and VIP tickets are $150 (must be 21+). Tickets must be purchased in advance. For ticket information, visit online at www.fairhopesteak.org. Tickets will not be available for purchase after the event gates open. From scholarships for students to building play yards for the kids, and supporting our local library, the Rotary Steak Cook-off brings in thousands of much-needed dollars that often change the lives of our recipients.

Filling Plates with healthy foods and Filling Hearts with hope! It’s what we do because it’s about hunger! We run on the power of prayer, the energy of volunteers and heartfelt community contributions.” state Prodisee Pantry’s Executive Director, Deann Servos. Since 2003, Baldwin County families have visited Prodisee Pantry 221,470 times seeking assistance with the most basic of needs: food and hope! Prodisee Pantry’s volunteers distributed 695 tons of food, but we are so much more than a box of groceries. We listen, encourage and connect families with other services that can lift them from poverty to self-sufficiency.” responds Servos.
Red plates are starting to pop up all across the county at banks, churches, businesses, small groups, civic clubs, etc. Each plate has a value of about $100. One nickel, one dollar, ten dollars or one hundred dollars at a time, the community will FILL THE PLATE of our neighbors in need. “We are asking the community to donate what they can when they see the red plates. It’s simple to give, just scan the QR code on the plate or drop at donation in the collection jar. For so many, healthy fresh fruits and vegetables are a luxury... but for pennies on the dollar Prodisee Pantry can provide a family with these nutritious options from local farmers,” Servos says.
The image of who is HUNGRY in most people’s minds isn’t who Prodisee Pantry sees. Over two decades, our volunteers often recognize themselves in the faces of the 555,000 individuals who have eaten food provided by Prodisee Pantry. The hungry include the elderly woman sitting next to you at church, the single mom with two kids at the grocery store buying milk, your neighbor, or a co-worker. 10,835 family visits in 2024. They are struggling financially due to job loss or low wages, medical expenses, natural disasters and other crises. It costs just $40 to provide a family with 100 plus pounds of groceries. But, Prodisee Pantry is more than just a box of grocer ies to these families. Each family receives fresh produce, meats, bread, staple grocery items and onsite access to dozens of other sup portive programs. Our caring volunteers can plug a family into onsite representatives for free legal services, SNAP (food stamps), coun seling, employers, budget help, medical & dental assistance, job readiness classes and so much more. We love hearing families say “I came for food, but left with... a job... a voucher for clothes for my kids... housing help and more! FOOD, CONNECTIONS and HOPE HAPPEN a t Prodisee Pantry! This winter in Baldwin County has brought us many fun experiences- Flu, Strep, GI bugs, colds, and more weather changes than you can imagine. These are certainly no fun and added to them is a resurgence of eczema. While it can happen in any age person, over 85% of all eczema occurs in persons less than five years old. The good news is that eczema is completely resolved in half of all infants affected by the disorder by age three. Today, we will discuss the physiology behind eczema, some potential causes, and what you can do to help minimize the rash that itches!
Eczema is a term given when the skin turns red, dry, scaly, and itchy. Oftentimes, there will be a family history of allergies, asthma, or other skin conditions that can help predict if a child will have eczema. While the exact cause of eczema is unknown, it’s often thought to be linked to an overactive response by the body’s immune system to triggers such as soaps, cosmetics, jewelry, detergents, and certain types of clothing. In addition, environmental allergens and foods can trigger “flare-ups,” as well as stress, illnesses, and changes in temperature and humidity.
In infants, the itchy rash can produce an oozing, crusting condition that occurs mainly on the face and scalp, but it may appear anywhere. In older kids, the skin problem occurs most often between the ages of four and ten and is characterized by round, slightly raised, itchy, and scaly eruptions on the face or trunk. These are less oozy and more scaly than in young infants, and the skin tends to appear somewhat thickened. The most frequent locations for this rash are in the bends of the elbows, behind the knees, on the backs of the wrists and ankles, and on the fingers. All types are very itchy, and the skin generally tends to be very dry. Sometimes, the eczema can occur into adulthood and tends to have localized flares of dry, itchy skin.
So, what do you do? The first goal is to identify possible triggers and eliminate them. In infants, be sure to use unscented and dyefree lotions, soaps, and detergents. And be sure to check that all caregivers are doing the same. I had one infant who was really breaking out, but the parents were using all the right products. Sure enough, when the child would go to grandma’s house a few times a week, the clothes were washed in her detergent, and the child reacted. Occasionally, I have seen children who manifested a
food allergy by having really bad eczema. The most common culprits are milk, wheat, and eggs, or other environmental allergens.
In terms of some treatment options, the basics include frequent use of scent-free, dye-free moisturizers regularly and frequently to minimize itchiness and dryness, especially after bathing. Some children do better with fre quent baths, and some do better with bathing every other day. In addition, other creams can be used, but only as directed by a physician. Certain steroid creams can cause serious damage to the skin on the face and body if used incorrectly. Also, some children require wet and dry body wraps and I have even had parents smear Vaseline inside a kid’s socks at night to keep the feet moist! It is critical to have a very specific plan with your physician that all caregivers must follow.
One of the most important aspects of eczema to understand is that sometimes ec zema just happens. Stay positive! As always, consult aap.org and your physician.
“Because my last name is Brown, on the first day of every school year, I begin the year by discussing what a family is. We talk about their family at home and I tell them, that we are a family at school. Then, I give them all a brownie to eat at snack and we make family/friendship bracelets that indoctrinate them into the family. The students think this is fabulous.”
Mrs. Brown has been teaching for 11 years and has been teaching first grade at J. Larry Newton Elementary in Fairhope since 2017. She graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Southern Mississippi. Deciding to pursue teaching was an easy decision as Mrs. Brown’s mother and grandmother were both teachers.
“They inspired me to continue the tradition,” said Mrs. Brown. “Teaching first grade has always been such a rewarding experience because of reading. Seeing a child make the jump from letter sounds, to blending words, to reading a sentence, to reading a book, is the greatest.”
Creating a safe space for her students has always been a top priority for Mrs. Brown. She is determined that her students feel important
J. Larry Newton Elementary
and that they know she is invested in each of their lives.
“If my students feel loved and safe, I feel like I’ve done my job. If a child is happy to come to school, then the learning always follows,”
Mrs. Brown said. “My teaching style is very inclusive. I believe that all students are able to learn, even its at different levels. My classroom is a warm and friendly place where I hope my students are at ease and feel comfortable. I want my classroom to feel like home. My students know that even though they may be doing hard things, they are always supported and loved.”
With summer in full swing, Mrs. Brown wanted to leave a tip for all the parents while the kids are enjoying their break. “Read! Read! Read! Have your child read to you and then read to your child! Take turns reading,” she shared.
“As you’re traveling make up counting games, count letters on tags and add them to the next car. Let them know that learning can be fun.”
The Bayside Academy Chess Team got to play to defend the previous two years’ State Championship Titles in their own home county of Baldwin County at Magnolia School in Magnolia Springs on Saturday, March 29th.
Bayside entered teams in two divisions (High School Under 1300 [U1300] rating division and Middle School Under 1100 division). Bayside was the two-time defending champion in both divisions of play.
The high school team featured senior captain Jacob Stallworth ; juniors Boyce Magli, Colt Hancock, and Evan Stafford ; and freshmen Huan Chen, John Stephen Klimjack, and Burke Ramagosa . The middle school team included 8th graders Don Chen and Elias Blossom and 6th graders Ben Freeman and Jeremy Ou
The tournament was five rounds of play, and while the players play as individuals, the top four scorers from each team comprise the team score. Chess scoring is one point for a win, half point for a draw, and zero for a loss. Maximum team scores possible are 20 points (four players x five possible wins).
The high school team played in a lightly contested division from a team standpoint, but there were several good opponent players in the division from various schools, including the second board player from local league champion Spanish Fort High School. Bayside scored at least four wins in every round and finished with 15.5 team points (77.5% of the possible 20 points) for the day. John Stephen Klimjack led the way with a perfect five-win score for the day, earning the Individual State Champ award in the process. Joining him as the Top Four scorers were Evan Stafford with a 4–1 record, Jacob Stallworth with 3–1–1, and Boyce Magli at 3–2. Huan Chen and Colt Hancock each scored two wins, two losses, and one draw, and Burke Ramagosa scored 2–3. Congratulations to the Bayside team for winning the State U1300 Title for the third year in a row! Evan, Jacob, and Boyce also won individual awards. The middle school division had several other complete teams competing against us, including UMSWright, Christ the King, Magnolia School, and Foley Middle. After scoring two wins out of four games in Round 1, the team went on to score no less than three points in all four of the remaining rounds! Elias Blossom led the way, winning all five of his games, joining John Stephen as an Individual State Champ! Don Chen had four wins and one loss, and up-and-coming player Jeremy Ou, in his first season with the team, won four straight games after losing in Round 1. Ben Freeman added a win and two draws on the day. The team finished with 15 points out of the possible 20, a fine 75% winning performance! UMS finished in second place with 12.5 points, and Christ the King placed third. Don and Jeremy also won individual awards.
For the day, the high school team scored 21 wins, 11 losses, and three draws while the middle school team scored 14 wins, four losses, and two draws for a combined total of 35 wins, 15 losses, and five draws, a +20 in wins! And they combined to score 30.5 points out of a possible 40 maximum, for 76.25%. A very good day for the team, and Coach Paul Nager is proud of them. It should be noted that Laura Morin and Magnolia School did a very good job of hosting the event, while our local league director, Mr. Tim Yahr, directed the event, doing a fine job as well. Local chess legends and Alabama Chess Hall of Famers Tom Denton and Valerie Hodgson were also there, as well as Alabama Chess Federation President Michael Porcelli The team will now prepare for Nationals in Orlando the second weekend in May. Jacob Stallworth, John Stephen Klimjack, Boyce Magli, Elias Blossom, Burke Ramagosa, and Jeremy Ou will attend the event, and an appearance by the former Coach Eric Nager and some key players (David and Michael Klimjack) is expected.

After remaining undefeated all season, the Fairhope High School JV Scholar’s Bowl team took second place in a close match in the District Championship. We are so proud of this achievement! This is the team’s second year in a row to compete in the championship tournament. Our JV students have been supported by our Varsity team, whose insight and strategy suggestions cinched our wins across the season. As the year concludes, we are sad to say goodbye to seniors Max Astorga and Sierra Caldwell, who, along with our intrepid juniors, have mentored younger players and raised the bar for our success every year.
Congratulations to these scholars, and Go Pirates!
We are so proud of the Daphne Elementary School Third Graders! Great job teachers and students! The Wax Museum was such a great event!
Belforest Elementary School celebrated our amazing athletes at Special Olympics! A huge thank you to our student athletes, parents, paras and teachers for all of their hard work and heart. Way to go Belforest Champions!! Definitely the best day ever!

PreK-7th came together to see the culmination of our 8thgraders’ hard work and knowledge at this year’s rocket launch! Overall, the rockets soared higher than they ever have before, making this an impressive launch! It was a thrilling experience and a fantastic way to celebrate learning in action. Way to go, 8th grade!
Fairhope East Elementary School students worked together to engineer a robotic arm, created rockets for launching, completed rigorous astronaut physical training, and ordered the planets while also creating a scale model. What a wonderful hands-on learning experience for these students!
Second grade students at Bayside Academy presented The Life and Times of William Shakespeare on Tuesday, April 8th. The play was originally written by Graham Thimes of Fairhope; Linda Lott and Tootsie Bryant added lines and scenes as more children joined the school. Bayside students have been performing the play for more than 25 years, and over the years, the costumes and painted backdrop have become very ornate with lots of parent and grandparent involvement. The students begin brainstorming through poems about Shakespeare’s lift six weeks before the play. These daily poems help the children learn about Shakespeare’s life. The children love learning about Shakespeare, and this play has become a cherished Bayside tradition.
Congratulations to Foley Middle School student Javious Knight who earned all-county awards in football and basketball! Way to go Pat-Pat!

The third-grade lemonade war at Fairhope West Elementary School was so much fun! There were definitely some interesting and delicious flavors but there can only be one winner. And the winner is Mrs. Galloway‘s Capy Café! They use a mixture of Sprite and lemonade for the winning concoction. They also had some clever marketing by selling lemonade for one ticket but offering a spin on the prize wheel if you gave them a second ticket! Now, keep in mind, students were only given three tickets to use at the lemonade stands. The stand to receive the most tickets won the war.

A very special ceremony took place this morning at Baldwin County High School as four seniors have answered the call for a career in education as part of the Future Teachers Signing Day. They include JaNya Crook, Demeitric Lymon, Abigail Paul and Addison Scarborough, all who will begin their educational journey at Coastal Alabama Community College.
As part of the ceremony, each student shared their college and career plans as well as their motivation to become a teacher. Many cited the desire to make a positive influence on students as their driving force, the impact teachers had made on their own lives, and to help students excel to their full potential.
BCHS teacher Chantelle McPherson serves as an advisor for the Future Teachers of Alabama chapter. In her words of encouragement, she shared how teaching creates the ripple effect because of the important role teachers play in the lives of students. BCHS Principal Richard Paul, whose daughter was among the signees, choked up while talking about the importance of educators in society. He shared that every other profession shared one thing in common: a teacher taught them how to read. He shared that no school day will be typical but encouraged each of the signees to take on the challenge because of how very important it is to have great educators in the classroom.
Future Teachers of Alabama is an organization within the Aspiring Educators/Student Division of the Alabama Education Association (AEA). It is for middle and high school students who have expressed an interest in the field of education as a career choice. In addition to taking part in job shadowing of educators, the FTA members also take part in various service projects throughout the school year. FTA Advisors at BCHS include Chantelle McPherson, Misty Byrd, Diona Davis and Vickie Locke

Love blossomed young for Dale and Kristy Biggs when they were just 14 and 15 years old, growing up in the suburbs near Chattanooga, TN. Now, the couple has been happily married for 23 years and has two children. They own their own business, Extreme Rides, LLC. Dale restores old cars, and Kristy executes the day-to-day business.
“We are huge Tennessee fans and love football season,” shared Kristy. “But we always wanted to live at the beach, so we made the move in 2012, and I am so thankful we did!”
The Biggs boys are Jack (16) and Matthew (7). While they are several years apart and different in many ways, the brothers’ bond is strong.
“The boys are very close but fight like cats and dogs,” Kristy said. “Matthew loves Jack. I know Jack feels the same, but he is a teenager, and he just doesn’t show it like Matthew.”
Jack is currently a sophomore at Gulf Shores High School and is active in football and track. He also took a culinary class last semester, which helped him navigate the kitchen at home.
“I feel like I blinked and he grew up,” Kristy reminisced. “My children bring me so much joy in this season of life. I cherish every moment of Jack’s life before he graduates in two years, and Matthew gets bigger every day. This season is flying by. What a privilege it is to watch our kids grow up, but what a heartbreak it is as well.”
Matthew attends Gulf Shores Virtual Academy and is quite the artist, carry -
ing a marker and notebook everywhere he goes. He is also taking guitar lessons.
“Matthew is a very rambunctious child, and I knew he would not handle sitting still for very long,” said Kristy, explaining why Matthew attends the Virtual Academy. “He is a creator and will build things out of nothing. He can go out in the yard and find items to build with.”
Dinner is often crazy at the Biggs home because it has to happen before or after Jack’s athletic events.
“I’m very thankful that Jack is a great cook. He will cook a few nights a week to help me out,” Kristy shared.
“He has made many homemade meals since he took culinary last semester at school. He has made homemade sushi, alfredo sauce, and soups. Some nights, he will take over the kitchen, which is great.”
recipes with low carbs, and this is one that I found. It is so delicious, it stuck in our house!”
Many times, Kristy alters the recipe to include some cooked pasta for the boys. With Jack being so busy in sports, he needs the extra carbs. She also enjoys serving this dish with a salad and garlic toast.
Ingredients:
• 1 rotisserie chicken, cut up
• 1 bag of frozen Broccoli, cooked
• 2 blocks of cream cheese
• 1 packet of ranch seasoning
• Salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
1. In a saucepan on medium heat, begin to heat the two blocks of cream cheese.
One of the family’s favorite, busy night meals is Low Carb Ranch Chicken and Broccoli because it can be made quickly and is delicious.
“During my pregnancy with Matthew, I developed gestational diabetes. I had to learn to give myself four insulin shots a day. That was pretty scary,” explained Kristy. “I kept control of my sugar with the help of a low-carb diet. I had to find
2. Once the cream cheese begins to melt, add the cooked Broccoli and chicken. You can add other vegetables if you like.
3. Mix well and then add the ranch packet. When it’s nice and melted you can serve.

When I look back at each important moment in my life: the day I learned to drive, my graduation, my wedding, and the birth of my first child, she is always standing in the background, smiling and cheering me on. More importantly, she was part of the other not-so-monumental moments in my life, like when I got stung by a bee, when the kids teased me, and when I cried my way through my first broken heart. My mom was always there to support me through all the moments, big and small. Now that I have been a mom for a dozen years, I appreciate my mom so much more for the things she has always done with little or no recognition. I now realize the sacrifices she made and the monumental effort she put in.
Here are just a few reasons why I appreciate my mom a whole lot more since becoming a mom:
The mother’s work is never done, and it is a thankless job. Taking even one day off means more work for days to come. Moms pick up the same toys, wash the same dishes, and do the same laundry over and over again. Not only do moms maintain the housework, but they also hold a mental inventory of all items in the home. Most moms can recall the location of the baby’s favorite stuffed animal, the toddler’s missing shoe, the library books, the stapler, and any other random item a family member may request at any given time. I appreciate the example of steadfastness that my mom gave me for maintaining our home.
As moms, we often feel like we live in our minivans. Moms don’t just transport kids from one activity to the next. They also maintain the family calendar, make appointments, and make sure everyone is in the right place at the right time with the right gear (musical instruments, snacks, sports gear, sunscreen, backpack, and the list goes on). Juggling school and activities in itself is a full-time job that my mom (and most moms) manage with ease. I appreciate my mom for being the social planner, taxi driver, and personal assistant to our whole family as we grew up.
The first time I dropped my son off at a babysitter’s and watched him cry
and reach for me in the window, my heart broke. As moms, we endure heartache often as we watch our children learn and grow, succeed and fail, and endure ill nesses, hurt feelings, and disappointment. Our heart soars when they meet their goals and sink when things don’t work out. Motherhood is a roller coaster of emotions that we moms withstand without complaint. I appreciate my mom for her strong sup port of me even when she was hurting too.
There are things moms do every day that go unnoticed. Moms make sure the football jersey is clean before the next game, check in on a sick kid during the night, drop off a forgotten lunchbox, put puzzle pieces back where they belong, replace toothbrushes, clean out the pantry, email teachers with concerns, volunteer, cook, shop, and so many little things that keep a family going every day. The little things that don’t seem to matter, that most won’t notice, that no one asks for, that moms do just because they want to show their love for their family. I appreciate my mom for all the things she has done that I never thought to thank her for.
Moms love their kids through tantrums, potty training, back talk, and rebellion. There is no doubt that raising kids is trying on patience but moms have a way of letting us know that no matter what mistakes we make, they will be there to catch us when we fall. I appreciate my mom for loving me even when I was unlovable.
When you become a mother, you are the center of your child’s world. You feed them, change them, and comfort them. The more they grow, the more independent they become. While this is something to celebrate, it can be heart-wrenching to loosen the grip on a child and trust them to manage life and all of its challenges alone. It’s scary and new and feels more like a loss of control than anything else, but as you watch your child take on life’s challenges, it can be a great sense of pride as well. I appreciate my mom for letting me go, grow, and experience life in my own way.
This Mother’s Day, take notice of the hard work moms do every day. Acknowledge the little things they do, thank them for always being there, and hug them tight before you leave.

Should I Buy My Soon-To-Be Ex-Wife a New Car?
Q. My wife and I are going through a divorce, and she just had our first child. Under the circumstances, I feel it’s my responsibility to take care of her for a while longer, and to put her and our son in a safe, new vehicle. She’s driving a 2002 Chevy Prizm right now with lots of miles on it. I’m afraid any kind of accident could result in a disaster. Do you think I should buy her a bigger, safer new car?
involved, but honestly? I don’t think buying her a new car will solve anything. My guess is the truth of the matter is this: The whole situation is breaking your heart, and you’re worried sick about your son. This is 100% natural, buddy, and it means you love that little baby with all your heart. But if it were me, I’d find a little bit larger used car—a good, reliable one—that either one of you, or both of you combined, can pay for with cash. No payments, no leases. But, here’s the important thing. Spend every second you can get hugging and loving on that little boy. And let his mom know you want to be part of his life as much as possible. He’s going to need his daddy around.
I’ve gone to church my entire life, and I know for a fact the Bible says not to lay up treasures on earth. Doesn’t that mean we shouldn’t be greedy or accumulate wealth?
A. The Bible also says in Proverbs that in the house of the wise there are stores of choice food and oil. I appreciate your con cern, but when I talk about “piles of cash,” my frame of reference is that we’re to handle our money and other possessions for good and for God. It’s not about greed, or to show off or to use it just to buy bigger and better things for ourselves.
A. God bless you both. And that little boy. I’m truly sorry you’re going through a mess like this, and I appreciate your attitude and concern about things. Divorce carries a lot of emotional stress and worry for everyone
Q. On your show, you’re always talking about accumulating piles of cash.
If you look back through scripture, you’ll find many of the Bible’s major characters were wealthy people, who un derstood they were not the owners of the money and wealth. They understood God owned it all, and their job was to manage it all properly for God’s glory.
But here’s the thing. You can’t do good if you don’t have the resources to do good.

The app is available in Asia, Europe and North America.
GasBuddy (Available on Apple Appstore; Google Play)
On a road trip, you don’t just need convenient and inexpensive places to park the car: you also need lots of gas. GasBuddy helps you find the cheapest gas at the nearest gas station. You can search in advance or as you’re driving. The app has a gas estimator, which calculates how much gas you need based on the car you’re driving and the distance you’re traveling.
HotelTonight (Available on Apple Appstore; Google Play)
If you’re a planner and like to organize everything in advance, then HotelTonight
isn’t for you. But if you’re going on a last-minute trip, or if you don’t mind being spontaneous and reserving a hotel room once you get to your destination, this app can save you money. It lets you search nearby hotels and find the best last-minute deals. It includes ratings, reviews, and photos from other travelers so you can see what to expect. It’s available in Asia, Europe, and North America.
Rome2rio (Available on Apple Appstore; Google Play)
Whether you’re planning a domestic trip or a vacation abroad, there will be times when you can get to your destination in different ways. Rome2rio lets you compare different modes of transportation (bus, car, ferry, flight, train) and find the fastest and most inexpensive solution. All you have to do is to enter your location and ultimate destination, and the app will generate and compare all travel options. This app is available worldwide.
Transit (Available on Apple Appstore; Google Play)
If you want to save even more money
on transportation costs, consider using public transportation whenever possible. For that, download Transit. This app saves you both money and time by letting you pull together departure times for all nearby buses and trains so you don’t have to look through individual schedules one at a time. Enter your desired destination, and the app displays all public transportation options as well as fares.
Turo (Available on Apple Appstore; Google Play)
If you need a car but don’t feel like renting one from one of the many, wellknown car rental companies, consider getting one from Turo. Much like Airbnb for accommodation, this is a peer-to-peer car rental app, which lets you rent cars directly from other car owners. You can expect to pay about 35% less than if you rented a car from a commercial rental company. The app is available in Europe and North America.
WiFi Finder (Available on Apple Appstore; Google Play)
Whether you’re traveling at home or abroad, using your cell phone when WiFi
isn’t available can be very expensive, with high roaming charges. Get Wifi Finder. This app helps you find free Wifi all across Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. Even if you’re not being charged extra for roaming on your phone, this app comes in handy – it helps you find places where you can use your tablet or laptop computer free of charge.
(Available on Apple Appstore; Google Play)
To make your vacation as inexpensive as possible, you need to know the foreign exchange rate. The more foreign currency your get for your dollars, the cheaper the place is for you. XE Currency helps you find affordable destinations by displaying the foreign exchange rate in real-time. You can monitor up to 10 different currencies simultaneously, which is especially useful if you’re visiting multiple countries.

Alexander and the Terrible,
A washed up used game store owner and a friendless teenager stumble across a mystical orb that pulls them into another world, where they encounter a master crafter whose expertise will be essential in helping them find their way home. Thanks to Jason Momoa and Jack Black, this is a funny film, even for adults, and the animation is well done. The story is flimsy at best and characters are poorly developed – but that won’t bother the target audience. Photo ©
It’s a familiar story – a vain, violent queen orders the murder of her pretty stepdaughter. While on the run, the princess encounters seven dwarves before being poisoned by her ruthless stepmother. In this retelling, Snow White also joins forces with seven bandits and their handsome leader before leading the people in overthrowing their unwanted monarch. Giving Snow White more agency is a plus, but the story feels unfocused and most of the new musical numbers are bad when they’re not forgettable. Photo © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Alexander believes he’s cursed, so when his family embarks on a road trip to Mexico City, Alexander is extra cautious. Of course, disaster finds the Garcia family and Alexander learns some lessons about taking risks and enjoying whatever life dishes out. This film doesn’t hold any surprises for older viewers, but it’s fun and good-hearted with plenty of zany antics, a sincere script, and good acting. The only surprise here is the nearly three dozen minor profanities, which feel out of place

A burned-out teacher at an exclusive boys’ school in Argentina, Englishman Tom Michell is an unlikely caretaker for a penguin, even one whose life he has saved. But when the penguin adopts him, Tom faces up to his past, finds the courage to tackle the challenges of the present, and even improves his teaching. This is a touching story that also addresses big issues like Argentina’s dirty war and the erosion of people’s rights under a dictatorship. It’s a great way to open conversations with teens. It’s 1969 and Dr. Audrey Evans is trying to do the impossible: cure fatal childhood cancers. To fund research studies, she’ll pressure doctors, administrators, and pharmaceutical companies. But there’s one more thing she feels driven to do – help families cope when their child is in the hospital. Based on a true story, this uplifting movie benefits from fine acting, excellent period detail, and a relatable, complex protagonist. Photo © Blue Harbor Entertainment
When my daughter went to college, we used every spare inch of the space in our SUV to carry her stuff. It seemed like she packed her whole wardrobe, enough cleaning supplies to maintain the White House, and more snacks than I thought she could eat in a year. Even then, she discovered she needed a few more things – items no one told us we should pack.
1. Your health insurance card – Yes, most campuses have a clinic onsite to diagnose strep throat, UTIs and other simple illnesses. However, any prescriptions are dispensed offcampus at the local Walgreens or CVS. My daughter found on more than one occasion that the on-campus clinic was often over flowing with sick students, requiring her to visit the off-campus urgent care.
2. Your family’s medical history – Mom isn’t going to be with her college student when she visits a doctor at school. Your student will need to know your family’s basic medical history so they don’t have to call home while filling out the doctor’s forms.
3. The ability to cook simple meals – Most students are sick of the college cafeteria food by the second week
and out of money for take-out items by the third week. Take advantage of the kitchen in the dorms by making simple pastas, egg dishes or a comfort food from home.
4. Basic kitchen tools – No one wants to use the dorm kitchen tools (who knows the last time they were washed). Instead, buy a cheap pot, colander, large spoon, crockpot, can opener and whatever other items you need to make your favorite dishes.
5. Family passwords – My daughter texted me one night at 11pm to ask for our cable company user name and password so she could watch The Bachelor on the ABC app. Many cable stations require proof that you are already paying for their service in order for you to watch the programs online.
6. Amazon Prime Account – Almost everything can be ordered through Amazon and shipped to you in two days, including food, school supplies, books, clothes and toiletries. Amazon Prime Student is available for free for the first 6 months, plus upgrades to a full membership for 50% normal rate.
7. Rain gear – It rains on almost every college campus at least some of the time. Don’t overlook purchasing a large umbrella (big enough to cover you and your backpack), rain boots and a water proof jacket. No one wants to sit in a class in wet clothes.
8. Brita Water bottle – Disposable water bottles are surprisingly expensive in single purchases and hard to haul across campus in large cases. A Brita water bottle filters dorm room or water fountain water, saving you a ton of money. Plus, it is easy on the environment.
9. Entertainment that is not electronic – Give yourself a break from the technical world. Unwind with a coloring book or catch up on your favorite magazine. Playing card games or Frisbee is a great way to bond with new friends.
10. Checks – Much to our surprise, you cannot pay for everything on campus electronically or with cash. There were two instances my daughter’s freshman year that required me to overnight her blank checks. This may also be needed for direct deposit for on-campus jobs or utilities in an off-campus apartment.
11. Simple tool box – You will need a screwdriver to open the back of your calculator battery compartment. Zip ties and duct tape are great for quick fixes. Other simple tools might be a plunger for the suite bathroom or a mini air pump for blowing up balls or bike tires.
12. First aid kit – Pack a simple bag of cold medicines, pain relievers, bandages and a thermometer. Everyone gets sick after the pharmacy has closed, so it is best to be prepared.
13. Mini tupperware/ ziploc bags – These are great for storing extra food from your big lunch, taking snacks with you in your backpack, or packing wet items when traveling for a weekend trip.
14. Business attire – Most college students think they can wait until their junior or senior year to pack a suit or conservative skirt. However, some class projects, formal events or inductions require nicer clothes than a hoodie and yoga pants.
15. Your own bank account - If you didn’t need one for your high school job, it’s time to get one. Most on campus jobs are paid via direct deposit. My daughter’s account is linked to ours (one way) so we can transfer money to her as needed.
When a young adult turns 18, they legally become an adult in the eyes of the law. This means parents no longer have automatic rights to access their child’s medical records, make healthcare decisions, or manage financial matters on their behalf—even if the young adult is still on their parents’ health insurance or being financially supported. As college students often live away from home and navigate new levels of independence, having powers of attorney in place becomes a critical safeguard for both students and their families.
A Healthcare Power of Attorney allows a designated person—typically a parent or guardian—to make medical decisions on behalf of the student if they become incapacitated or are otherwise unable to communicate. Accidents, illnesses, or mental health emergencies can arise unexpectedly, and without this document, healthcare providers may be legally restricted from discussing the student’s condition or care plan with their family.
Similarly, a Durable Financial Power of Attorney gives a parent or trusted adult the legal ability to manage financial matters on behalf of the student. This can include handling tuition payments, managing bank accounts, paying rent, or dealing with financial aid issues. While students are learning to handle their own finances, this backup can prevent small mistakes from snowballing into major issues, especially in times of emergency.
These documents also protect students in more complex legal or logistical scenarios. For example, if a student studies abroad or takes part in an out-of-state internship, time zones, distance, and communication challenges can make it difficult to handle urgent matters alone. Having powers of attorney allows for smoother coordination and decision-making, particularly when time is of the essence. Some families hesitate to have these conversations, but creating powers of attorney is about ensuring support, safety, and readiness for unforeseen situations. Like insurance, it’s something you hope you never have to use, but are immensely grateful for when the unexpected happens.

As a child of the 80s, I remember the days when my brother and I were not allowed to attend sleepovers at friends’ houses. At the time, we didn’t understand our parents’ concerns; we thought they were being overly protective. Their primary worry was “stranger danger”—the potential threats that could arise behind closed doors when they weren’t there to supervise.
Fast forward to today, and as a parent myself, I’ve come to fully appreciate those concerns. While my husband and I allowed our children to enjoy sleepovers, our decision was rooted in careful consideration of the environment. Thankfully, our kids fell into that sweet spot before devices and social media became deeply embedded in childhood experiences. As a baseball family, we spent years traveling and bonding with just a handful of other families. By the time sleepovers rolled around, we knew these families well and felt comfortable with the idea.
issues that parents must now consider when allowing sleepovers.
Just one slip-up can change everything. All it takes is a friend’s device to pull up an inappropriate game or share an explicit image that leaves a lasting impression on your child. Once seen, those images cannot be unseen. I experienced this firsthand when my son stumbled upon inappropriate content while searching for turtles on a friend’s unrestricted device.
Accidents happen, but research suggests that children often encounter inappropriate material by accident the first time, and they may actively seek it out the next time. If devices are left unrestricted, those dangerous searches can continue.
So, what can we do as concerned parents? Start by carefully considering whether to allow your children to spend the night at friends’ houses. It’s crucial to acknowledge that not all families set the same boundaries you maintain in your home. If you decide to give the green light, have an open and honest discussion with the other parents about their rules regarding devices and games.
Ask whether their child’s phone has parental controls enabled and express your preference for no devices in the room at night. Be clear about your boundaries regarding your child’s safety and emphasize the importance of respecting those guidelines while your child is in their care. Additionally, discuss any tech-related privileges that older siblings may have and ensure that these are monitored or restricted during sleepovers.
These conversations might feel awkward or uncomfortable, but remember: your child’s safety is worth it. It only takes one moment for a child’s life to change forever, and proactive discussions can help mitigate those risks.
However, today’s landscape is different. Kids as young as six have access to iPads, smartphones, and games like Minecraft or Roblox. By the age of ten, many are navigating social media platforms, including YouTube. With this technology comes a myriad of potential
The situation escalates when a child’s friend has older siblings. An older sibling might make impulsive and inappropriate decisions about what to share, thinking it will be “funny” to show something to a younger child. It’s not only older brothers; older sisters might introduce content related to eating disorders, bullying, or body image issues—issues that, while not explicitly inappropriate, can still be extremely damaging to young minds.
