As I have mentioned many times over the years, I LOVE planning for a special celebration. Be it a holiday dinner, a birthday party, or just friends over to watch a game, I am all in for it. As a self-proclaimed spreadsheet addict, I have Google Sheets filled with “to-dos” and party food lists, complete with links to recipes and, of course, Pinterest boards full of fun ideas. When the girls were younger and it came time to plan their birthdays, I was giddy. We would sit down and pick a theme, plan activities, make homemade decor, and menu plan. Of course, we always had to have a themed cake we would make together. They weren’t always pretty but they were fun!
As the girls got older, the birthday planning conversations changed from two girls chatting excitedly to something like this: “What about a mystery party?” “No, thank you.” “How About the Minute to Win It Challenge? Or a Karaoke Party?” “Mom...” “What about...” “I just want to have some friends sleepover.” “Cool! We can do a glamping theme and make...” “Mom, seriously, I just want a plain, simple party with some friends. No theme, no decorations.”
It was at that moment the Price is Right loser horn played in my head. No theme? No decorations? That is when I realized it was not the “stuff” that made it fun for me; it was the time spent planning with my girls. They were growing up and ready for more independence and I just had to accept it. After all, that’s part of our job as parents, right? Creating independence? Plus, knowing she was getting the celebration she wanted was all that mattered (she told herself as she pitifully closed the Glamping Pinterest tab).
On the positive side, a toned-down party was also so much easier on me! While I do love all of the planning, the execution of it all could be a bit much at times. Maybe, as Ashley Elizabeth shares in her feature “Why Keep Birthdays Simple?”, there are much easier and more fulfilling ways to celebrate than wearing yourself out.
Whether you are planning a full-blown party with all the extras or just a simple gathering of friends, you are sure to find some great ideas in this month’s Birthday Party issue! This issue is filled with party planning ideas, local businesses to help with your special event, and, of course, the annual Birthday Party Resource Directory, which is great to keep on hand all year as you plan your celebrations! In the directory, you will find places to host a party, rental companies, entertainment, and more! Also, if your ears perked up when I mentioned a glamping party earlier, you will want to check out Pam Molnar’s feature, Glamping - A Glamorous Way to Host a Camping-Themed Sleepover
There are always things to celebrate living on the Gulf Coast, and there is no shortage of events celebrating Independence Day this month, so make sure you check out the calendar for a variety of community events. Let’s remember too that we don’t need a birthday or holiday to celebrate life. Grab a cold glass of lemonade and watch the gorgeous sunset as a family, or send a last-minute invite to your neighbors to come over for game night. No frills are needed, just celebrating friendships and fun.

In a world overwhelmed with advice— from social media, grandparents, friends, and more—it can be hard to know what truly matters in parenting. After more than 25 years of experience as both a parent and clinician, I’ve come to believe that nearly all parenting challenges fall into three essential categories.
1. Focus on Task Completion.
Make sure your children follow through with what they’re asked to do.
For younger children, this means using physical, visual, and gestural prompts to guide them. For older children, it means staying present and checking that tasks are completed.
Parents often get sidetracked by a child’s emotional reaction to being asked to do something. When that happens, they either “give in” to avoid conflict or try to control their child’s emotions. Both approaches usually result in emotional and behavioral spirals that are hard to manage.
Instead, stay focused on task completion. This consistency helps raise confident, capable, and resilient adults.
2. Teach Permission-Seeking.
Help your children learn to stop, think, and communicate by teaching them to ask before acting. As soon as they can communicate, they should be expected to ask for what they want or need.
Many parents confuse entitlement with independence. Entitled children grab a snack from the kitchen; independent children ask first and wait for permission.
It’s normal and developmentally appropriate for children to get upset when told “no.” When you hold your ground, you’re building your child’s ability to handle frustration. A child who can effectively communicate wants and needs—and who can accept “no” without falling apart—is well-equipped to succeed in most settings.
3. See Problem Behaviors as Skill Deficits. Most challenging behaviors aren’t signs of deep psychological issues—they’re signs that a skill is missing.
A child who tantrums after losing a game, bosses others around, or throws toys at bedtime isn’t broken. They just haven’t learned
how to respond appropriately yet. Your role is to teach them the skills they’ll need to manage life as adults.
For example, a child who always loses their temper when losing a game needs practice. Play games daily. Before starting, act out appropriate ways to respond and let them practice. At first, they may scream or flip the board. But with repetition and support, they’ll learn to express frustration calmly and show sportsmanship.
Avoid tiptoeing around problem behaviors. Instead, lean in and teach the missing skills. Think about learning to write a name—it takes holding a pencil properly, sitting still, and forming letters. These skills are learned one step at a time through repetition and support. Behavior is no different.
When we know better, we do better. Watch for the skill your child lacks, then practice it—consistently—and encourage every effort and improvement.
As a parent, I,too, was swayed by wellmeaning advice and pop psychology. My need for approval, desire for control, and discomfort with my children’s distress often got in the way of giving them what they truly needed.
Please learn from my experience. If you stay kind and honest—and stay focused on these three core areas—you’ll be far more effective in helping your children grow into the people they were meant to be.

Do you know that Baldwin County only has 52 homes/ families that are certified to care for foster children, and there are typically over 150 children in and out of the foster system? Because of the lack of foster homes, siblings are often split apart – one child may stay in Baldwin County while the other is taken to another part of the State, sometimes as far as Montgomery or Birmingham, and some children are being farther away from their home in Baldwin County. To help raise awareness and to show the community what they can do to support these children, Leadership Baldwin County invites everyone to the Village of Hope Jamboree. Attendees will enjoy live music, activities for children, sweet treats, free food, information from non-profit groups, with Department of Human Resources to answer questions and talk about the feasibility of fostering, as well as sharing the good that it does, and EAP Lifestyle Management, LLC to speak with foster families and children about mental health! We would love for you to consider coming to be a part of a fun day! The Village of Hope Jamboree will be held August 9th, from 10am-2pm at the University of South Alabama, Fairhope Campus (111 St. James Street, Fairhope. In June, the Solid Waste Disposal Authority (SWDA) of Baldwin County, in collaboration with the City of Daphne, officially launched its new curbside recycling program providing residents with a convenient opportunity to support a cleaner, more sustainable community.
The first wave of recycling carts has already been delivered to more than 450 Daphne households that opted into the new service. Residents can recycle a variety of common household items made of paper, plastic, and aluminum. For a complete list of accepted materials, visit baldwincountyswda. org/recycling/recycling-details.
“This program is about giving our residents the tools to make a real dif ference,” said Daphne Mayor Robin LeJeune. “By providing curbside recycling and supporting expanded facilities, we’re investing in a cleaner, more sustainable future for our city and all of Baldwin County.”
Residents within Daphne city limits can sign up for curbside recycling at any time for $10 per month, which helps cover the cost of hauling, sorting, and responsibly processing recyclable materials.
“Recycling isn’t free—hauling, sorting, and processing have real costs,” said Terri Graham, Chief Executive Officer of SWDA. “The new recycling program is optional, and a great way to make a difference.”
The curbside recycling rollout is part of a broader effort to expand recycling access countywide, while also preparing for the June 2025 opening of the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) on Bishop Road in Fairhope. This new facility will accept items that are not suitable for curbside bins, including electronics, glass, batteries, lightbulbs, and household hazardous waste. SWDA plans to expand this recycling program across Baldwin County. Residents in other municipalities will be notified when curbside service becomes available in their area. Residents within Daphne city limits can sign up at any time through the official program’s website, www.baldwinrecycles.org.
For the past twenty years, Melia Schacherer has been a cornerstone in The Learning Tree at First Fairhope. She began several years ago as a Pre-K4/K5 teacher and now has the privilege of teaching kindergarten.
“I wouldn’t be in the position I am today if it wasn’t for Mrs. Melia. Fifteen years ago, she was my son’s teacher. It was his first experience in a school setting, and she made it so special. Her passion for teaching was clear the moment we walked into her classroom, and because of her, he entered kindergarten well-prepared and with a genuine love for learning,” shared Laurie Jensen, who is now the Preschool Director at First Fairhope. “Her kindness and example inspired me to begin subbing at The Learning Tree, and, well— fifteen years later, here I am as the preschool director at First Fairhope.”
Mrs. Melia has truly enjoyed her transition to teaching Kindergarten at The Learning Tree, which was implemented roughly three years ago.
“It’s been such a rewarding journey—watching these little ones grow and helping prepare them for what’s next,” said Mrs. Melia. “Kindergarten can be a big adjustment for young children, so I strive to create a balanced classroom environment. I incorporate plenty of fun, movement, and opportunities to be loud and expressive—along-
side quieter moments focused on learning and growth. Finding that balance helps keep students engaged, comfortable, and excited to learn.”
To keep her students engaged, our Teacher of the Month works diligently to keep learning interactive and memorable. For example, when she is teaching sight words, she is also incorporating hand gestures to connect the concept.
“Some of my favorite moments in teaching are when a child has that “ah-ha” moment— when they read their first word or complete their first math equation,” Mrs. Melia exclaimed. “Seeing their faces light up with pride and excitement is truly unforgettable and reminds me why I love what I do.”
When Mrs. Melia’s students leave her classroom, her greatest desire is for them to feel unconditional love. Her goal is to lay a strong foundation of confidence, kindness, and a love for learning that they can carry with them for years to come.
has been married to Scott for 40 wonderful years. They have three daughters—Stacey, who lives in Germany; Megan, in Colorado; and Savanna, in Northern Alabama. She is also a proud grandmother to five grandbabies! Melia loves planning trips to visit them and spending as much time as I can with my family. She also loves digging into Pinterest for new and creative classroom ideas.

Through mock elections, campaigning, and lawmaking, these young leaders are shaping their futures and learning what it means to be an active, engaged citizen. Go Toros!
Field Day at St. James Episcopal School Kindergarten and 1st Grade students enjoyed a beautiful day exploring the Mobile Bay ecosystem during their field trip to the Pelican’s Nest, where they caught and observed a variety of marine life. The day ended with a picnic and ice cream at Gene’s Beans, a sweet way to wrap up their adventure.
Every year there are students who show themselves to be dedicated to their academics in an admirable way. These Elberta High School students have consistently chosen to take the more rigorous courses and have excelled at all of them. Recently, we celebrated 21 students who are graduating with distinction. We also had the opportunity to recognize and celebrate our teacher of the year, Kelsey Hopper at our banquet as well. We would like to extend a big thank you to the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce and all of their local sponsors for hosting our dinner at Wolf Bay Lodge.
At the Foley Middle School 8th Grade Awards
Ceremony, Lucas Diaz received the Ida White Leadership Award. This award is given each year to a student who has been a part of the ELL community at some point in their school career and demonstrates leadership and service to their peers. The award is given in memory of Ida White, who served for many years as our feeder schools’ liaison with the ESL community. During her years of service, she touched more lives than anyone could count, and she exemplified the ideal of leadership through community service. She always put service to others before herself and taught her students to do the same. Congratulations Lucas!

BCS Grammar School ended the year with a joyful Field Day in late May. Students enjoyed games, an inflatable obstacle course, water fun, and cool popsicles. It was the perfect sendoff to summer and a great reminder that learning and laughter go hand in hand at Bayshore.
As part of The Big Serve service day, Ordo Amoris students went out into the community to love and serve our neighbors with willing hearts and joyful hands. Students helped sort clothes for the Swaddling Clothes ministry at Redeemer Lutheran Church, cleaned the facilities at Lifeline Ministries and Church, packed food boxes at Prodisee Pantry, and organized donated goods at the Big Fish Stores in Foley. Through opportunities like these, we are training our students to become servant leaders—young men and women who will one day lead in their churches and communities with humility, compassion, and Christ-like love.

The spirit was high and the bows were big at this year’s Robertsdale High School Cheerleading Camp! From tiny cheers to big jumps, our future cheerleaders brought all the energy, glitter, and golden smiles. Huge shoutout to the Spanish Fort Middle School Cheerleaders! They took 3rd place in Camp dance! Not only did they bring the energy, but they also worked hard, learned new skills, and grew so much as a team. We also had two Pin It Forward recipients and four All-American cheerleaders this year!
The entire Stapleton School staff gets excited each spring when our graduating seniors return to their elementary home to walk the campus. This is a treasured memory for everyone involved and is certainly an inspiration to our current students.
The group that visited our campus is truly a stellar group of remarkable young men and women. We can’t wait to see the mark they will make in the world. We couldn’t be more proud!

From curious kinders to confident leaders, these students have shown resilience, compassion, and a readiness to take on new challenges. As they head off to middle school, we know they’ll continue to do great things. We’re so proud of each and every one of them!
At Children’s of Alabama, kids are the center of our world and our mission is to provide the very best care available to every child. It’s why we are here.
Bayside Academy Upper School students had the opportunity to travel to the Galapagos Islands during the last week of May. Twenty-five students and seven chaperones spent eight days exploring the Amazon cloud forest, snorkeling in the Pacific, and hiking the Sierra Negra volcano, which is the world’s second-largest volcanic caldera. They swam with sharks, sea turtles, and penguins, and many students brought home blue-footed booby T-shirts after having the opportunity to see the birds in person.
From Kindergarten to 6th grade, Loxley Elementary School’s End of Year Parties were a blast! We wish all our students a great end to another wonderful school year. We will see everyone tomorrow for the summer send off.
Congratulations to the Fairhope High School Class of 2025! Once a Pirate, always a Pirate!

An amazing celebration for an amazing group of students! Congratulations to all the Belforest Elementary School 6th graders. A huge thank you to all the parents that made the 2025 6th grade Dance. We wish you all the best!
Several lucky students stepped into the shoes of J. Larry Newton school administrators — and they did an amazing job! From completing classroom walkthroughs to making real-time decisions, they got a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to run a school.
They showed leadership, creativity, and professionalism beyond their years. The future is bright with these young leaders at the helm! Let’s give a big round of applause to our student administrators for the day — your school is proud of you!
Silverhill Elementary School held their Sixth Grade Crossover Ceremony! We are proud of everyone and their accomplishments! Once a bulldog, always a bulldog!
Titus Ferguson and Madelyn Lindsey were chosen to participate and represent Spanish Fort High School at Alabama’s HOBY Conference at Troy University. The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Foundation (HOBY) is an organization dedicated to inspire and develop the global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation. Madelyn and Titus gained valuable information and leadership skills that they are excited to implement within their school and community. Go Toros!
Daphne East Elementary School 2nd grade teachers went all out to celebrate the end of an amazing school year with a Glow Day! They transformed their classrooms into glowing, neon wonderlands where students reviewed skills, played games, and made memories—all under black lights and bright colors! From glowing math challenges to fluorescent fun, this celebration lit up the room with joy, excitement, and learning.
A huge shoutout to our incredible 2nd grade teachers for creating such a magical and memorable experience for their students. What a bright way to wrap up the year!

Congratulations to the wonderful St. James Episcopal School Kindergarten Class of 2025! This year has been such a special journey, filled with curiosity, creativity, and so much growth. We’ve watched these young learners blossom with confidence, and we couldn’t be prouder of all they’ve accomplished. As they take their next steps toward first grade, we know they’re ready for all the exciting adventures ahead!

Bayside Academy is proud to announce that 2021 graduate Isabella McCormick been selected for a Fulbright award for the 2025–2026 academic year and has received the coveted Madrid, Spain, assignment.
According to the Fulbright Program, “the Fulbright U.S. Student Program expands perspectives through academic and professional advancement and cross-cultural dialogue. Fulbright creates connections in a complex and changing world. In partnership with more than 140 countries worldwide, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers unparalleled opportunities in all academic disciplines to passionate and accomplished graduating college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals from all backgrounds. Program participants pursue graduate study, conduct research, or teach English abroad.”
The U.S. Department of State says, “Fulbrighters from the United States and around the world have gone on to achieve distinction in government, science, the arts, business, philanthropy, and education. Among the ranks of Fulbright alums are 62 Nobel Prize recipients, 80 MacArthur Foundation Fellows, 89 Pulitzer Prize winners, and 42 current or former heads of state or government.”
As Bayside Academy’s World Languages Department Chair Marian Claramunt says, “Isabella showed such love for Spanish the first time she stepped into my classroom. Her passion for different cultures is outstanding. She has traveled all over Spain and abroad during summers while in college, so, of course, it was not a surprise to me when I got the great news about her going back to Madrid, Spain, but now with a Fulbright!!! Because of students like Isabella, I am still passionate about teaching.” We are so incredibly proud of Isabella and wish her continued success!
Katie Bonner, Thomas Petruzelli, Andrew Kiernan and Jimmy Roh had wonderful weeks at Alabama Girls and Boys State learning about leadership, government and service. We are proud of how they represented our school!
St. Michael rising seniors,
It was a bittersweet milestone as Pine Grove Elementary School celebrated our incredible kindergarten students at Awards Day. It’s hard to believe how much they’ve grown academically, emotionally, and socially in just one year. Our teachers cheered them on with pride and fought to hold back their tears as they sent them off, knowing they’re ready to soar into first grade. We are so proud of all they’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see the bright futures ahead for these sweet students.
Thanks to the generous support of the Spanish Fort Public School Commission, Spanish Fort Elementary School students are diving into the exciting world of aquaponics! This hands-on system is teaching them how fish and plants work together to create a sustainable
ecosystem—and it’s sparking curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning. Also, a special thank you to Philip Richardson for setting up the entire aquaponic system!
Our fish are getting bigger every day over the summer, and we can’t wait to jump back in this fall with our students to explore even more about aquaponics and sustainable science!
We’re so grateful for the opportunity to bring science to life in such a meaningful and fun way.

The Kiwanis Club of Bay Minette has recognized two outstanding senior students with $500 scholarships honoring their commitment to community service. The club presented the Bruce & Susan Lovett Community Service Scholarship awards to Kam Drinkard and Andi McKissack at Baldwin County High School. Both Drinkard and McKissack are headed to Auburn University this fall. She will major in Drug and Biopharmaceutical Science and he will study Business Administration with a Management major. McKissack is a member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and has served in various leadership roles with the organization. She is also part of the Junior Ambassadors with North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, Balcoala yearbook staff, Diamond Darlings, Friends of Exceptional Children, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society and Key Club. She is also a member of the volleyball, sporting clays and has played tennis, bowling and softball while at BCHS. She has a 4.32 GPA and is the daughter of Amber and Jeremy McKissack.
At BCHS, Drinkard is a member of National Honor Society and serves as an officer for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was named a captain for the BCHS Baseball Team and was the starting catcher for his senior season. Drinkard is also part of the Student Leadership Team at Crossroads Church. Drinkard has maintained a 4.29 GPA and was recently recognized as Most School Spirit and Mr. BCHS by the senior class. He is the son of Brandon and Brooke Drinkard.
The awards are named for the Lovetts who were instrumental in the reestablishment of the Kiwanis Club in Bay Minette and served in leadership roles during the first years of the club.
As part of the scholarship application, students were asked to submit their personal resume, letters of recommendation and an essay on the topic “What Community Service Means to Me.”
In her essay, McKissack writes that community service is about “giving back with purpose, compassion and a willingness to serve others without expecting anything in return.” She said that her involvement in organizations has provided her an opportunity to witness firsthand how transformative that can be for a community. “These experiences have shown me even the smallest acts can make a big impact.” Drinkard said community service can take many shapes and can be accomplished from a variety of paths. “Serving your community can involve many things such as cleaning up local parks, working at food banks, or helping with a social event,” he said. “Community service means anything that is done without the intent of receiving acknowledgement.” Drinkard shared that he had participated in several local events, volunteered at baseball camps, and assisted elderly residents in their time of transition. “Giving back to the community that assists in who I am today brings me a sense of purpose and fulfillment.” The Kiwanis Club of Bay Minette meets at Street’s Restaurant at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month. New members are always welcome to attend to learn more about the organization.
If your child loves the idea of camping but doesn’t want to battle the bugs, the elements, or sleep on the hard ground, then glamping is a great alternative. It allows you to enjoy the great outdoors while surrounded by the comforts of home. Glampers can even set up their camp indoors for nights
Have the guests take turns pulling them out and reading the question out loud. 2. Yardzee – Make lawn dice by decorating same-sized square boxes. To keep up with your Boho theme, you can decorate the dice in vintage wrapping paper and add the dots with solid colored paper. Make each girl a score sheet from an online printable or keep everyone’s score on poster boards nearby.
Scavenger Hunt – Check online for an outdoor scavenger hunt list or make your own. When the sun goes down, you can also do a glowstick hunt around the yard. Assign each guest or team a color for an
For an easy appetizer or movie snack, make campfire nachos. Fill individual foil packets with nacho chips, cheese, tomatoes, corn, beans, meat and avoca dos. Seal foil and cook 4-5” from fire for 10 minutes or until cheese melts.
For your main meal, warm up mugs of to mato soup and make grilled cheese paninis. Offer the guests cheese options and add-ons like bacon, avocado, tomatoes, and spinach. Chocolate fondue is an alternative to birthday cake. Use strawberries, bananas, pound cake, or marshmallows for dippers. For breakfast the next morning, let the kids make cinnamon rolls on a stick. Use kabob sticks (presoaked in water) to secure the rolls and let them cook slowly (about 15 minutes) over the low heat of a firepit. Drizzle with icing and serve with a fruit cup.
Choose a great kid-friendly camp movie to end the night. If you are screening the movie outside of the Glampground, try filling an inflatable pool with blankets and pillows for a cozy viewing setup. Camp movie ideas might include Parent Trap, Camp Rock, Cheaper by the Dozen 2 or The Great Outdoors.
An easy glamping goody bag is filled with all the fixing for s’mores –chocolate bar, Teddy Grahams and marshmallows. Add a simple note that says, “Life is s’more fun with friends like you”. You can also fill a dollar store cinch bag with travelsized items like toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, makeup removers and lip balm.

1. Choose an Experience Over a Party.
Instead of hosting a big party, create memories with a meaningful experience. One friend woke his son at sunrise, drove to Legoland for the day, and returned home as the sun set. It wasn’t extravagant—just cost him tickets and gas—but spending one-on-one time made it unforgettable. If time or money is tight, a simple outing can still feel special. For my son’s birthday, we took him to a free bike park—his happy place. Doing the thing he loved most with his family enjoying it alongside him, filled his cup more than any party could.
2. Throw ONE big party.
We’ve done this for the past three years, and my kids love it. We rent a bounce house (just once a year), bake a
big cake, cook lots of food, and invite every member of the family and everyone’s friends for one big celebration. Each child wears the number of their new age, and when we sing “Happy Birthday,” we include all their names. It’s perfect for our homeschooling family—our kids share friends, and our guests only need to come to one party, not four. We ask guests not to bring gifts, and we give our kids presents on their actual birthdays.
3. Let Them Choose a Special Outing with a Friend.
Instead of inviting the whole class to an expensive trampoline park, let your child choose one or two close friends for a special day tailored just for them. Growing up, my best friend’s mom worked at a hotel, so we spent her birthday lounging by the pool—effortless yet unforgettable. For a quieter, cozier option, host a doll or stuffed animal tea party with just a few friends. Picture little ones in fancy dresses, sipping tea with their beloved plush companions—adorable, intimate, and refreshingly stress-free. If your son is more of an adventurer, skip the party chaos and take him and his best buddies fishing at the lake—no sisters allowed. The goal isn’t extravagance, but creating moments they’ll cherish forever (and ones you won’t need to prepare for weeks to do).
4. Make It About Their Favorite Things.
Birthday parties are a modern invention. In many cultures and throughout history, individual birthday celebrations weren’t the norm. If the goal is to make your child feel special, let them pick the day’s meals or desserts. I love cooking my kids’ favorite dishes all day and adding little touches—like a banner over the table or candles at dinner—to make even a simple family meal feel like a celebration. Do they love trucks or horses? Add those embellishments to the decor, if you feel like making it extra fancy.
5. Have a ‘Yes Day’.
Give your child a day where (within reason) they get to make the choices.
From picking meals to choosing activities, let them take the lead. Maybe they want to have a pancake breakfast in pajamas, go on a nature walk, or build forts in the living room. A Yes Day is a simple yet powerful way to make them feel special and celebrated.
6. Create a Memory-Making Opportunity.
Make birthdays about storytelling and reflection. Have family members write notes, draw pictures, or share favorite memories about the birthday child. Collect them in a scrapbook so they can look back on years of love and celebration.
The Heart of the Celebration
Over the past decade, the pressure to throw extravagant, Instagram-worthy birthday parties has skyrocketed, with parents now spending an average of $314 per celebration—excluding gifts. While lavish themes and big venues may create picture-perfect moments, they often come at the cost of financial strain and unnecessary stress. But here’s the good news: your child doesn’t need a five-tier cake or a petting zoo to feel celebrated. At the end of the day, birthdays should be about joy, connection, and honoring the beautiful person your child is becoming. Whether it’s a simple backyard festival, a Yes Day where they call the shots, or a cozy scrapbook tradition filled with heartfelt memories, the best celebrations aren’t the ones that impress social media—they’re the ones that leave your child feeling deeply loved. And that’s a gift no amount of money can buy.

The Guzlas family was established 16 years ago by Eric and Mia. These two met at the Fairhope Art Walk through mutual friends, and the rest is history. Together, they have one 11-year-old son named Jaxon.
Eric is self-employed as a General Contractor who specializes in drywall. Mia is a dance educator at Creative Outlet in Fairhope and South Baldwin Dance Center in Gulf Shores. Jaxon just finished 6th grade with all A’s from Gulf Shores City School’s Virtual Academy. He loves the water and wants to be a beach lifeguard one day in Hawaii.
“We love ‘Glamping’ at state parks and Fort Wilderness in Disney World. We bring our camper with all the comforts of home,” shared Mia. “We love to travel - and not just glamp. At the beginning of this year, we went to Park City, Utah to snowboard, and in July, we will head to New York and Canada to see Niagara Falls.”
One of the most breathtaking trips the Guzlas family has taken was to see the Redwoods in California and the Grand Canyon.
“When we are glamping, I do not want to be cooking all day. We want to bike ride, hike, and swim. So while we are having fun, dinner is often cooking for us in the crockpot,” Mia said. “I am sharing our favorite taco soup recipe. I just love how easy and delicious this recipe is. This is my go-to meal when life is just too busy, and it is kid-approved by Jaxon.”
Mia found this recipe online and described it as a ‘Pinterest Win’. The recipe makes enough for at least two days, so you can have leftovers right away or even freeze for an easy weeknight meal later on.
“Anytime my friends are sick or just need a meal, you better believe this is what I am bringing,” said Mia.
With summer in full swing, Eric, Mia, and Jaxon intend to embrace every single second of it.
“We love the water,” exclaimed Mia. “Boating is our number one favorite thing to do. Jaxon enjoys wakeboarding, I love to float, and Eric is an excellent boat captain!” The trio will bounce back and forth between lazy days on the Gulf of America and quick trips to Orlando to visit favorite theme parks like Disney World.
“Jaxon’s present for completing sixth grade with all A’s was an encounter at Sea World,” Mia exclaimed. “One of my son’s favorite animals is penguins, so that was our encounter. He was so excited to get to feel them, take pictures, and ask questions to the handlers. His major question was, “Do Penguins have knees?” and the answer was yes.”

Q. How do you feel about moving credit card balances to other companies to get lower rates when you’re trying to get out of debt? I just paid off my first credit card, and a friend suggested this idea for paying off the others faster.
A. Lots of people think they’ve really done something big to solve their debt problems when they do this. And I’m sure your friend is trying to help with this suggestion, but you’ve got to remember that getting out of debt, and gaining control of your finances, is all about changing the habits of the person you see in the mirror every day. You’ve got to make a commitment to a lifestyle change that includes getting out of debt, staying out of debt, and sticking to a written, monthly
budget. That includes keeping track of every, single dollar, giving it a job to do and living on less than you make.
Now, your friend’s idea might help speed up the process a tiny bit. But the habits that got you into debt in the first place won’t change just because you’ve switched credit card companies. What you’re talking about is an easy way to lower the interest rates—temporarily, in most cases—but it doesn’t change your everyday behavior with money.
When people have problems with debt, it’s often the result of dumb financial choices and living above their means. I’ve run into

so many folks who got into trouble with money just because they wanted to impress other people. But guess what? When you change, interest rates don’t matter nearly as much. And when you shift your mindset about money, it will make a huge difference in a way that changing credit card companies and chasing lower interest rates can’t.
I hope this helps. And take a look at my Baby Steps plan while you’re at it. I promise, if you follow those steps, it will help you move forward, get ahead and put you on the road to a debt-free life and financial

Elio
Overwhelmed by the death of his parents, Elio doesn’t feel like he belongs anywhere. In desperation he decides that he wants to be abducted by aliens – and when his dream comes true and he lands in the Communiverse, he finds himself negotiating with violent would-be conquerors, befriending an eyeless, wormlike alien, and learning lessons about honesty, loyalty, courage, self-sacrifice, and family. Original, heartwarming, and beautifully animated, this Pixar production also features dazzling visual design. Parents will enjoy this movie along with their kids.
Scorned by the fierce Vikings of Berk, Hiccup wants to prove himself by killing a dragon. Then he injures one and winds up befriending the creature who he names Toothless. This unlikely pair will change the lives of both the dragons and people of Berk. A live action reboot of a 2010 animated film, this production is competently made and despite being considerably longer is well paced. The plot is compelling, the actors capable, and the jokes funny. Throw in numerous positive messages and it’s a win for family movie night.
Orphaned young, Lilo is cared for by her frazzled big sister, Nani. Then their lives are upended by an alien who crash lands on earth, bringing mayhem, laughter, and a new perspective on family. A live action remake, this version sheds the charm of the original animated film, while amping up the annoyance factor. Plot changes are pointless and Inexplicably for Disney, the digital animation quality is uneven - a rookie mistake for a legendary studio That said, kids will still enjoy the zany action.
After his brother’s death, Li promises his mother that he’ll give up kung fu. But when they move from China to New York, Li learns that he might need to master karate to defend his honor – and his new girlfriend’s family. Luckily, Li’s shifu from Beijing is able to persuade Daniel LaRusso to help him learn from both martial arts traditions. Well cast, tightly plotted, and delivering themes of courage and selfrespect, this family-friendly flick is a solid reboot of the classic original film. Photo ©Sony Pictures
When his grandson is diagnosed with a brain tumor, Joe has only one way to earn the hundreds and thousands of dollars needed for his medical care: returning to the sport that nearly killed him. Can he stay on a raging bull for long enough to save Cody’s life? Intense themes make this movie too scary for little ones, but it’s a competent, sincere underdog sports flick with strong messages about love, courage, commitment, persistence, and resilience. Genre fans will approve. Photo ©Angel Studios
“Kristi was here.” The age-old signature pre digital age that we all scribbled (insert your name of course) in yearbooks, bathroom stalls, or carved into trees — it was more than just a scribble. It was a small, silent act of claiming space, of making a mark that said, “I was here, I existed, I was part of something.” For kids growing up before the digital age, leaving a signature was a tangible, lasting gesture. It was a moment of connection, however fleeting, that made you feel seen. It was personal and immediate — a hand touched a wall, a pen touched paper, and that small act carried weight because it was real, imperfect, human. If you were lucky enough to pen your signature onto your crush’s arm, that floating, excited feeling could last for days.
or a message that carried the weight of their moment in time. Now, a “like” or a quick emoji reaction is supposed to carry the same meaning, but it often falls flat. It’s a fleeting notation, a digital scribble in a sea of thousands, easily erased or ignored with a swipe. The sense of permanence has shifted—what once was a deliberate act of claiming space now often feels impersonal, almost disposable. And therein lies the quiet, pensive truth.
tions that make us human. The post, comment, or emoji is quick, transient, and often stripped of the messy, beautiful imperfections of real life. It’s hard to feel the weight of a moment when your marker is a tap on a screen. The sense of permanence is blurred by the endless scroll, the temporary nature of a trending meme, or the viral wave of an impulsive comment.

Today’s digital signatures lack that physical intimacy. They are often disconnected from the tangible interac -
Our signatures may have changed, but our need to be seen and connected remains. Perhaps the challenge isn’t in trying to make online signatures mean the same—but in remembering that true connection is still rooted in the authentic, imperfect, human touch.
