Hello! And welcome to the second edition of The Keelby Chronicle.

What a crazy few months it has been. The Christmas period, as ever, is a hectic one.

But throw in Covid, which seemed to sweep through the young people of the village in December, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.

But delays aside, we are here with 28 pages detailing events and news that has taken place within our little hub of Keelby since September last year.

And we’re already working hard on issue number three, due out in the run up to Easter.

Over the next few pages you will find out what some of our wonderful villagers have been doing in the name of charity.

And our District Councillor, Owen Brieley has also contributed to this issue.

We hope you enjoy this issue, and once again would like to say thank you to everyone who has contributed news, articles and advertising.

Colouring competition winners from Issue 1.

THE second annual Keelby Pumpkin Trail took place in October half term, and once again it saw households all across the village taking part.

The trail first took place in 2020 as Covid restrictions put paid to tradition Halloween trick or treat activities.

It was such a success, the decision was made to continue the trail each year, throughout the October half term.

Households from streets all across the village took part in this year’s trail, and there were some amazing and spooktacular entries.

As well as the displays themselves, children taking part in the trail were tasked with finding letters that they then had to convert into the name of a Halloween animal.

Everyone taking part in the trail was asked to nominate their favourite decorated house. And the winners for 2021 - by a landslide victory - were Marcus and Cheryl from The Manor House.

Big thanks once again to Amanda Stevenson from Morrison’s for the beautiful hamper prizes.

Family goes Nut-crackers with December saw streets throughout the village light up with festive cheer.

Pete’s tickled pink (and blue!) for charity.

Unless you were living in a cave, you may have noticed one of our Parish councillors sporting a rather striking ‘do’ during the winter months.

Cllr Pete Everitt took to the hairdresser’s chair at Hairport Salon in Little London, to show his support for leading breast and prostate cancer charities. With the aim of raising money through sponsorship (as well as brightening the dark winter nights) Pete opted for a combination of shocking pink and bright blue - the colours associated with the two charities.

And the brave colour combo was certainly a talking point throughout the village! At the last tally, Pete has managed to raise more than £600 for the two charities. He’s now looking ahead to his next transformation.

The North family, from Eastfield Road, set about turning their home into a real life Santa’s grotto for the month of December, all with the aim of raising money for the charity, Wish Upon a Star, which sends poorly children on once in a lifetime holidays.

Watch this space to find out what tint tickles his fancy next! of November, which saw hundreds of people attend, the family hosted the Big Man himself every Saturday throughout December so that children could visit and receive a treat. In total, they raised more than £2,000 which was enough money to send five poorly children on the holiday of a lifetime to Lapland. We can’t wait to see what they have in store for 2023!

Valhalla comes to Keelby THE age Norse myths and their Gods has descended on Keelby thanks to Valkyrie Wilderness Workshops.

Budding Vikings can now

channel their inner Thor or Odin in axe and knife throwing workshops that run twice a week.

The workshops form part of the innovative work being carried out by Valkyrie Wilderness Workshops.

Founded in 2020 by Army Veteran Steve Baxter, Valkyrie aims to provide support to Armed Forces Veterans and others in the community struggling with mental health issues, isolation or addiction.

A variety of activities are provided at ‘Valhalla’, the rural base camp, each with the aim of encouraging and supporting people to share their problems with others and gain peer support.

The programmes are

completely free for those who need them and include: • Axe & knife throwing • Wood tattooing • Woodworking • Archery.

People taking part in the projects have also helped with groundwork and construction at the site, with future plans including a full renovation of the barn into a Viking-themed indoor space.

The project will be led by a local interior designer, Rob Fawcett. Rob has recently appeared on BBC2’s Saved and Remade series.

People who join the Wilderness Well-being Workshops will have the opportunity to be involved in this work if they wish, learning new skills from Rob. Well-being workshops take place every Tuesday and Thursday, and are part funded by a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund.

Once a month Valkyrie also runs weekend camps for Armed Forces Veterans, supporting those who are experiencing mental health difficulties or personal problems relating to their service. In these camps, people undertake a day of activities before sitting down around the campfire in the evening to share their experiences. Camps are currently closed for the winter, but will resume again in March 2022.

To help support these camps, local businesses are being encouraged to sponsor the camp, or sponsor an individual veteran’s

place on one of the camps.

To help fund the work at Valkyrie, members of the public can take part in axe and knife throwing sessions every Wednesday and Saturday.

Sessions cost £15 for adults and £10 for 12 to 16-year-olds. They take place from 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday, and 10am to 12pm on Saturday.

The axe range is also available for private bookings for groups of more than eight people.

Poppy appeal celebrates record year THE annual Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal took place throughout October and November in the run up to Remembrance Sunday, and saw a record year for donations from the generous residents of Keelby, Great Limber, and Brocklesby.

Speaking on behalf of the local branch, Branch Community Support Officer Alyson Wilson said: ‘Thank you to everyone for supporting this year’s Poppy Appeal and for making it such a fantastic success.

‘Every poppy makes a difference to the lives of our Armed Forces community.

‘This year we marked 100 years of The Royal British Legion and our help is still greatly needed now, as it was back then.

‘This year’s total raised in Keelby, Great

Limber and Brocklesby was £2,548.45.

‘Thank you to Louise Drakes and Brightening Keelby who sold the Recycled Large Poppies, and to everyone that purchased them. ‘This raised £1,087.17 towards the total.

‘Thank you to Keelby Parish Council and all the residents who gave £250.00 for the purchase of the Poppies for the Lamp posts.’

Over the past few years, the amount that has been raised has significantly increased: • 2019 - £601.34 • 2020 - £1259.02 • 2021 - £2548.45 For the past 100 years The Royal British Legion has been here to help members of the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, veterans and their families. They support serving an ex-serving personnel all year round, every day of the week. They can help with any problems that you are facing and help is always available.

Un-bee-lievable experience for Louise NOVEMBER saw Keelby’s Louise Drakes crowned as one of three ‘sewing heroes’ for her tireless and selfless support of the local community, and beyond, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Louise, a dental hygienist by day, has been described by friends as a “superhero”. She was named as one of three UK Sewing Heroes for their work in supporting their local communities through sewing during the Covid pandemic.

Louise was named by Singer Sewing Machines after a nationwide request for nominations and was honoured at a lunch in London with Patrick Grant, a judge on the

BBC programme The Great British Sewing Bee. Since the pandemic began, Louise has made more than 11,000 lip-reading masks for the hard of hearing, those working in care homes with elderly people, for street teams working with homeless people, as well as masks, scrubs, and gowns for those working in the NHS. She has also sent out more than 250 packs of fabric and mask patterns to other people around the country so that they can do the same. And all this whilst continuing to sew bags and blankets for homeless people, and gowns for babies born sleeping.

Partially deaf herself, Louise recognised the need when we she went to the supermarket just before the first lock down and realised that she couldn’t hear or lip-read people wearing conventional masks.

So, she set up her own Facebook page and Amazon wish list to enable people to donate items to help her keep making the muchneeded masks “I looked at many other types of lipreading

masks but in the end decided I needed to design my own and make sure they were the best fit they could be,” says Louise. “But the fabric was also important. I needed to get crazy, funky fabrics that would appeal to kids and teenagers as well as more traditional, vintage fabrics for those in care homes. I think of myself as the ‘scrap lady’ as I can always find something to do with scraps and lots of people have been helpful in donating fabric or unwanted duvet covers or garments. I’m just happy that the masks have helped so many people.”

The other Heroes were Rosie Taylor-Davies, a costume designer from Putney. She created a network of sewists that, between them, made more than 28,000 items since the start of the pandemic, including sets of scrubs for NHS workers. Also Naomi Betts from Amesbury in Wiltshire who, realising that it would soon be made mandatory for people to wear masks in enclosed

indoor spaces, decided she needed to do something to keep herself occupied and to contribute to her community’s efforts. She began organising hanging mask trees in her garden for people to take. Word spread and, at its peak, she had 422 trees registered with many more operating off-map. Naomi estimates that around 200,000 cloth masks have been made with at least 15,000 distributed from her own driveway.

Patrick Grant said: “The stories of these three sewers are inspirational and reflect the enormous contribution that amateur sewers around the country have made to their local NHS and to help their neighbours through successive lock downs during the pandemic. It’s not an exaggeration for Singer to call Louise, Rosie and Naomi heroes and their local communities, as well as the whole sewing community, should be very proud of them and all of the other amazing nominees.”

Beauty and Beyond With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, you want to look and feel your best! Toni-Lee Richardson, owner of Skin Couture Beauty, gives us her tips for the perfect winged eye...

Top tips: • The winged eyeliner look is rarely mastered first time, so don’t give up!

• Select a liquid liner for a more intense look and build little by little in order to create the perfect look for you.

• Gently pull the skin taught to give your eyelid a smooth surface area.

Step 1 Working from the inner corner of the eye draw a line along the lash line - aim to get a third across the lid with each stroke.

Step 2 Allow your eyeliner to dry for a few seconds before opening your eye. Fix any uneven or wobbly lines before continuing.

Step 3 Once your line is complete place a small dot where you want the end of your wing to be. For the most effortless look follow the natural curvature of your lower eye line and extend upward.

Step 4 Draw one straight line from your dot into the corner of the eye. Using a light pressure will reduce smudging.

Step 5 Draw another line from your dot to the top of the eyeliner already on your lid.

Step 6 Colour in-between each line and allow to dry before opening.

Brightening Keelby Hello readers, how exciting is it to be here, Issue number two?!

So, what has our little group been up to in the last few months, you may ask? Well, we have been busy!

The area by the Spar shop is a community area that Brightening Keelby has been responsible for some time now.

However, exciting times are ahead as we wait for Keelby Primary Academy to take it over as part of their

forthcoming eco-project.

Until they do, we decided to continue to maintain it and keep it alive. With that in mind we have kept up to date with current events and have decorated the board according to the occasion. So far we have managed • The Olympic Games • The Paralympics • Halloween • Remembrance day • Christmas We hope you have enjoyed seeing the changing displays and decorations and that they have helped to brighten a little corner of Keelby.

We have also been working hard to put planters around the village. Our aim is to put one by each street sign, if safe, to make the entrances to the village and its roads a little more cheerful. We are nearly there. Bulbs have also just gone in so spring will look good.

Besides being as eco friendly as possible, we also endeavour to keep the village tidy. We have regular litter picks where we use all of the necessary safety equipment. The parish council has also kindly pledged to get us some more.

We’re always looking for volunteers on our litter walks. If nothing else, it’s a good walk in the fresh air taking in the sights and sounds of the village! Join our Facebook group for upcoming dates.

As ever, we are always on

the lookout and grateful for donations to our campaign. We have not been disappointed in 2021. People have given generously (you all know who you are!) in both time and money, including adopting/ sponsoring planters and the new British Legion Tommys at the village entrances. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your kindness.

But yes, you’ve guessed it, it doesn’t stop there!

Our commitment to the village incurs yearly costs for compost, plants, decorative items etc. the list, along with our ideas, is endless! If you would like to help support our campaign by volunteering or donating money, please visit our Facebook page and get in touch.

As you will have seen, we managed to get our Tommys installed before Remembrance Sunday. We’d like to say a big thank you to Cllr Everett who made them secure for us and tightened all the nuts! These were purchased purely from

your kind donations, so thank you to everyone who gave generously.

As we make our way through the remaining winter months into Spring, we will be out and about maintaining the planters and the community garden.

District Councillor’s Report

I WARMLY welcome the launch of the Keelby Chronicle and congratulate the editorial team and the wider volunteer group on their achievement, initiative and sheer hard work. In view of the ongoing

challenges we face as individuals and as a community in responding to the coronavirus pandemic it has never been more important to keep everyone informed of the latest news and of the opportunities available in our village in an engaging and inclusive way. Accordingly I’m absolutely delighted to have been asked to submit an update on behalf of the District Council.

One result of the lock downs and restrictions was a much greater recognition of the importance to us all of our local businesses, including the new ones established during the past eighteen months.

Alongside our responsibility for the administration and distribution of national funding support we created our own ‘Think Local’ campaign to support businesses in all sectors and of all sizes.

This service is offered completely free of charge and is easy to ‘sign up’ to using the form on our website. The District Council has also negotiated a special discounted subscription rate for the Federation of Small Businesses.

More information concerning the range of benefits and services provided by the FSB can be found online at: https://www.fsb.org.uk We have also worked with Clare Bailey, a Lincolnshire-based independent advisor, who has provided several business support webinars. We are also proud of our ongoing support for voluntary organisations. As a measure of success, in the financial year 2020-2021, no fewer than ninety-one community-led projects were supported through the District Council’s grant schemes (Councillor Local Initiative Fund 76 awards totalling £24,773.85 and the Match Funding Grant Scheme 15 awards totalling £67,396.97). For every £1.00 invested from these funds £6.98 was matched or levered in to the benefit of West Lindsey residents, equating to an overall sum of £643,931.05.

This money enables the delivery of many projects, each offering associated long-term benefits, including awards to Keelby Parish Council for the delivery of the Under 5’s Play Area, Keelby Sports Association for various ground improvements and Keelby Village Hall for the remodelling and modernisation of the toilets and back stage area. A recent

audit of this service resulted in a ‘high assurance’ opinion, the highest available.

Additionally ‘Good Causes’ registered with the West Lindsey Lottery, which began a year ago, are on track to share in over £24,000.00 a year of additional and most welcome income!

Our new central depot is now operational and was delivered on time and on budget. It will enable residents to receive their purple-lidded bins (for the separate collection of paper and cardboard, an environmental and financial imperative) during next spring. The Council’s green bin service is operated on a cost recovery basis and although more households have subscribed each year, costs have also risen inexorably leading to the difficult decision to increase the charge to £39.00 per bin per year. This will be the first change to the rate since the service was introduced and it will be held for at least the next two years. A copy of the 2022 Collection Calendar/Recycling Guide will be delivered to every home in the coming weeks. Please also be aware that there will be no changes to the normal schedule of recycling and refuse bin collections over the forthcoming Christmas and New Year period.

Congratulations are due to West Lindsey’s Street Cleansing and Waste Collection teams who are finalists in this year’s Association for Public Service Excellence Awards. These are for Best Performer and Best and Most Improved Performer respectively.

Keelby United Football Club KEELBY United FC is a well-established Football Association Chartered Standard Club and have been representing the village since 1937.
