Celebrate community Revitalised public space for the heart of Porirua

Individual Task and Roles

As the interior architect in the group I was responsible for modelling and re-designing the existing octagon building on site and designing a new construction for public restrooms. During the first two weeks of research the group discussed the potential programme of the existing building looking to integrate it closely with the scope of our development. I proposed we use the building as a way to enhance community engagement that will raise the value of the surrounding environment. It was decided and agreed that the building will be a Community Hall that provides space for cultural events, with an aim to provide for various events i.e. live music performance, talks, film screening, weekend artscrafts sessions for public; but also private functions for public and residents. Initially the building was thought of as an extension of the Pataka Galley, that is, not to create more more-space for exhibition but rather a space where arts and crafts can be created – as a place to make. Most walls and cladding were removed to be replaced with glazed curtain walls. Most interior walls were demolished to leave a simple clean and elegant structure – making use of the 14m span portal frame timber structure. The building still offers 147m2 of internal usable space. The intention was to keep the structure simple and keep costs low. The new construction features a ramp for wheelchair access. I was also responsible for the design of the public restrooms as part of our development proposal. This will be a uni-sex restroom with full wheelchair accessibility – 4 toilets including disabled toilet cubical. I worked with the group architects and landscape architect to create a site layout to bring cohesion to our design. The group chose to build on my proposed placement and orientation of buildings on site.
