Italy (Spring 2015): I traveled to Milan with Crossfire Academy to compete in an international soccer tournament.

Mexico (Spring 2015): I traveled to Mazatlán for a deep sea fishing expedition. I spent a week in the city learning about the community's unique heritage surrounding architecture and food.

United States (Winter 2017-Winter 2018): I traveled with Sounders Academy throughout the country over two seasons.

Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Italy (Summer 2019-Autumn 2019): I spent over a month backpacking throughout Europe in 2019. My underlying intention was to expand my cultural repertoire and explore new diverse landscapes. On this trip, I stayed in cities such as Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Berlin, Prague, Bled, Venice, Como, Naples, Positano, and Atrani.

Canada (Winter 2019): I have extensive personal connections throughout Canada, therefore I often travel to Vancouver. The architecture in Vancouver is completely unique and I find great inspiration from it.

Mexico (Summer 2021): I traveled to Puerto Vallarta for multiple weeks this past summer. During the trip, I improved my Spanish, hiked intensively throughout the jungle, and studied the local traditions of building.

WRITTEN WORK ARCHITECTURAL ROOTS SPRING 2021

Through my own assorted observations, my architectural preference emerges from a study of artificial space and form integrating within the natural world. Humankind has undergone extensive efforts to suppress the irregularity of Earth under the rigid confinement of artificiality and convenience. I believe this is an ideological goal of the past that must be replaced by innovations surrounding organic material and form. While it expresses intermittent deviations from my holistic values, I have found the vibrant town of Atrani on the Amalfi Coast of Italy to be of great inspiration to me.

After departing from California Polytechnic State University in Winter 2019 with the intention of expanding my academic pursuits beyond the rigidity of the engineering school, I spent numerous months working to save up for a backpacking trip around Europe. Starting my trip in Summer 2019, I first touched down in Northern Europe to then begin my meandering route southward. While cities such as Copenhagen, Berlin, and Prague all demonstrate vastly unique culture and tradition, it became readily apparent that their architectural roots all emerged from the replacement of the natural with artificial developments. In each of these instances, Gothic cathedrals and modernized examples of residential architecture inherited the landscape to become a space segregated from the Earth itself. This rather simplified visual pattern was sustained until I came upon Atrani.

Atrani is a small town built into the rock cliffs above the Mediterranean Sea. The landscape that it occupies does not permit conventional redistribution of land for the sake of convenience as its primary composition is of solid rock. In fact, nothing about its location indicates convenience as the primary means of transport is by ferry. As a result of its relatively formidable landscape, local architecture is inherently challenged with a necessitated obedience to the natural form of the region. The façades of the buildings in Atrani do not necessarily project excessive deviation from common architecture, but their unique placement within the landscape does.

It is within this respectful acknowledgment of the natural world in Atrani that I discover my most internalized inspiration. My perception of architecture is not implemented with selective intention to benefit Humankind. I want to empower people, the Earth, and all of its intermediate constituents. As I found at Atrani in 2019, the land does not- in fact- need to be redesigned for human consumption. The fundamental roots of modern design have the inherent potential to be reseeded within the preexisting organic architecture of Earth.

Atrani, a town being hundreds of years old, does not perfectly portray this ideology. Materiality is an important aspect within the philosophy that I pursue. The traditional uses of unsustainable materials such as concrete in Atrani emphasize that this pursuit is characterized by progressive development. While the town may not offer a sufficient example of these practices in a hyper-modern context, it has provided me with fundamental inspiration in which I can continually depart on infinite pathways of thought.

Contemplating the future, I am ecstatic to translate the ideology of Atrani’s historical building style to become more modernized and adapted to the varied communities it may serve. My conceptual design will be initially established within my own creative models but will simultaneously inherit the precedents of culture and regional geography to formalize and define the space I envision. While I have been exposed to somewhat limited amounts of architectural curriculum within the academic setting, my perceptions of architecture like that of Atrani have catapulted my desires to explore the powerful roots of design in the natural world. With a sustained passion for a more humbly adapted built environment, I am confident that I will realize my goals on broad geographic scales, empowering local communities and redevising ecological stability.

In such a personalized rendition, I am allowed to choose how an individual interacts with a space and the emotions that it might evoke. COMPRESSIVE ENVIRONMENT

Within the unrefined landscape of the Union Bay Nature Area, there is distinguishable order. Tall forests and low-lying grasslands establish compressive and expansive environments that contribute to a sense of rhythm throughout the site. Within this organically incentivized program, both architectural installations -bunker and tower- look to participate in this proactive dialogue of juxtaposing experiences.

Approached from below the compressive canopy, the tower perpetuates a rhythm of spaces as it facilitates the opportunity to reach into the sky. Draped rope along the outer edges of the form allows the compressive experience of the canopy to interject within the architecture as the participant ascends upwards.

Physical modeling has been utilized in this project to better understand the contextual factors of the site including topography and tree density.

The act of writing is defined by a duality within the heart and mind of the writer.

There is no black nor white, but something in the middle that asserts itself into the art.

The initialization of the writer’s room welcomes an extroverted mode of thought that is conducive to visual observation and physical action. An open court with an ascending ramp offers the writer an opportunity to look beyond the confinement of the rigid exterior forms.

After proceeding down a set of steps, the writer is corralled into a narrow passageway confined by large vertical walls. As this path descends, the walls appear progressively taller. Such a space suffocates any awareness outside of the participant’s most internalized thoughts.

This introverted state of consciousness is compounded at the lowest point of the room as a looming mass compresses the writer into their uniquely achieved realm of reflection.

RHYTHM OF FORM URBAN ARTIST’S STUDIO

Varying sequences of columns provide proportionally tiered levels of engagement throughout the artist’s studio and exhibition space. The lower floor proactively engages with the public realm as participants unconsciously flow through the thresholds of the linear space. The upper floor acts as a private space that seemingly floats beyond the realm of the public eye. Moving East to West, the sequencing of columns on the upper floor becomes more confining, achieving a heightened degree of privacy.

Descending from the upper entry point in which there are abounding visible sources of water, each terrace projects an evolving narrative surrounding the negligence of standardized water consumption. The perceptively organic form of the roof reinforces a progression to a more dystopian future as it diminishes towards the center of the structure. At the lowest terrace, visible water is negligible as harsh light strikes the participant. In reemerging into the natural environment, the participant is more readily equipped with a holistic perspective in which the ramifications of water misuse are acknowledged.

The first terrace offers a relatively wide path of cirulation. As the participant descends, the consecutive terraces become more restricted by means of their circulation paths. This progressive restriction evokes a degree of anxiety that is intended to supplement the ideological possibility that an invaluable natural resource such as water is depleting quicker than Humankind is willing to readily address. exterior perspective rendering

ORGANIC DECLINE

A GRAPHICAL STUDY OF BIODIVERSITY IN TIME

ARCH 201 | WINTER 2021 | CONCEPTUAL DESIGN | PHOTOGRAPHY, PHOTOSHOP, HAND DRAWING, PHYSICAL MODELING Time is experienced in its totality as the participant progresses through this axial space. Representing a decline of biodiversity, the initially monumental structure commences a trend of compression, allowing less diverse patterns of light to penetrate through the cables into the interior space. At the point of biological collapse, a new space emerges that is void of all diversity. What once appeared to be light reveals itself as overwhelming shadow. Assimilating with the darkness, the participant is left to contemplate the decline of life on Earth and its jarring implications for Humankind.
