Ashley Toft, CEO

As this is our first Guide to Adventure for three years, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your incredible support during this difficult period. So many of you postponed rather than cancelled your KE holidays when the pandemic hit, and others came back and re-booked as soon as trips could operate again. It gave us the confidence that once travel was back, we would be up and running quickly. And indeed that has been the case, with a full programme of trips operating since Spring 2022. Your feedback has been fantastic, as have your reviews, and we have loved receiving all your photos and videos from around the world. Please keep them coming.

97% EXCELLENT AITO INDEPENDENT REVIEWS

The Product team have been busy developing a number of exciting new small group adventures in destinations as diverse as Japan, The Galapagos, The Jura (French/ Swiss border) and Colombia. E-bikes are becoming ever more popular, and are now available on the majority of our cycling holidays. Plus we have two dedicated E-bike trips, one in Sicily (E-gravel bikes) and one in Mustang in Nepal (E-mountain bikes). Self-guided walking and cycling holidays are more popular than ever; perfect for those looking to travel at their own pace, with accommodation taken care of and luggage moved from place to place. Our self-guided range has increased significantly, with recent launches including walking in Crete, Lanzarote and Santorini/ Naxos and cycling in Istria, along the Rhine and on the Portuguese Coastal Camino. Our long-haul self-guided holidays will also be coming soon. All of our trips, whether travelling in a small group with an expert leader or self-guided, have an element of physical activity, ranging from leisurely right through to challenging and tough.

So we really do have something for walkers and cyclists of all abilities, and for families looking for a multiactive adventure. We are only too aware that some like to take it easy on their holidays, whilst others like a challenge! We continue to offset any carbon emissions from the ground operation of our holidays as well as any flights that we sell or use. But our focus now is very much on measuring our carbon footprint and finding ways to reduce our emissions, both in the office and on tour. We have recently updated the Sustainability pages on our website, so please do take a look. We have a long way to go, but are making some good progress. Whether you are looking to travel solo, or as a couple or group of friends or family, I hope that you get some travel inspiration as you flick through these pages. It is of course only a flavour of our offering, so please go to our website for more detailed information on all our holidays, and to find out more about KE. Alternatively come and visit us at our office in the heart of the northern Lake District; we’d love to see you.

MOUNTAIN JOURNEYS

THE BEST MOUNTAIN JOURNEYS IN EUROPE

MOUNTAIN JOURNEYS

THE TOUR DU MONT BLANC - FRANCE, ITALY, SWITZERLAND You’ve probably heard of the iconic Tour du Mont Blanc, which takes in France, Switzerland and Italy as it circumnavigates the highest peak in the Alps. It’s a stunning journey which can be made even more thrilling - and challenging - by mixing in a few high-level trails, where you’ll stay in hard-to-reach mountain huts and cross breath-taking high passes. Best of the Tour du Mont Blanc | BTM

THE GR20 - CORSICA You wouldn’t think that Europe’s toughest trek lies in the Mediterranean, but here it is: the GR20, a spiny traverse of rugged Corsica. You’ll trek 180km of mountainous terrain, 12000m of ascent and descent, and encounter a series of scrambling manoeuvres. Walk it knowing you’ll find dramatic coastline, mountain villages and a landscape which only can be seen by those prepared to take this challenge head on.

Corsica – The Complete GR20 | COR

HUT-TO-HUT THROUGH THE JOTUNHEIMEN THE HIGH TATRAS TRAVERSE - NORWAY In Norwegian, ‘Jotunheim’ translates POLAND, SLOVAKIA Often referred to as the ‘Polish Alps’, the magnificent High Tatras form a rugged border between Poland and Slovakia and are the highest range in the spectacular Carpathian Mountains chain. Part of what we consider a ‘secret side of Europe’, this range is home to a stunning alpine landscape, where your route will link excellent trails with comfortable and scenically located mountain refuges. KE’s LEADER OF THE YEAR Meet Rosana Laguia, one of our dedicated leaders and a recipient of our Leader of the Year award. Rosana has been looking after KE travellers in the Picos de Europa in Spain since 2013, and in 2019, she received

nominations from virtually everybody who travelled with her. There is not much Rosana doesn’t know about this stunning range, and

as ‘Home of the Giants’ - a name we think is rather apt. This mighty mountain range, is nature left wild - untamed, grand, and rich with rivers, fjords and wildlife. You’ll trek through a wilderness of peaks, cut through by rivers and ice-blue glaciers. Trek a classic, the airy Besseggen ridge which divides two aquamarine lakes, before taking on the summit of Galdhopiggen (2469m). Traverse of the Jotunheimen | NOR

TRAVERSE OF THE JULIAN ALPS SLOVENIA Another sorely overlooked range in Europe, Slovenia’s Julian Alps are home to Mount Triglav, the country’s highest peak. On the traverse, the ridges are rugged, the lakes sparkle with crystal clear waters and the mountain huts are welcome respites. This route differs from most with a twist at the end; you’ll reach the summit with a section of simple via ferrata to get you directly to the top. Across the Julian Alps to Triglav | JAT

WHY GO SELF-GUIDED? “Cannot recommend this holiday enough. The Austrian Alps and lakes are wonderful. Great family holiday not too much effort but not too little either. Just the right balance.” Peter from Aberdeen | SGTL

It’s your holiday, and the number one benefit of going self-guided, is that you are in control and have the freedom to set your own pace. Imagine the blissful feeling that you don’t have to spend hours organising all of your logistics, like how to transport your luggage, or endlessly search for accommodation. We’ll take care of all of that for you. You just need to choose who you want to travel with, when, and where you want to go. KE currently has over 60 self-guided trips in Europe, with some longer-haul ones being planned for 2023. Whether you fancy cycling in the Prosecco Hills in Italy, hiking the Corfu Trail from South to North, or going on a spiritual journey along the Camino de Santiago, we’ll have a self-guided holiday to suit you.

A large number of our holidays are centre-based, and all of them are suitable for families. Plus, it’s easy if you want to extend your holiday too. We have lots of trips that run back-toback, like in the Canaries, where you could be swimming in the volcanic pools of Garachico in Tenerife one minute, then hiking through the wild landscapes of Lanzarote the next. Self-guided holidays are flexible. That’s what’s so great about them. They give you the ability to take advantage of cheaper flight prices by travelling outside of busy periods, leaving you to simply choose dates that suit you. So, do you fancy a flexible hassle-free adventure? Then read on…

THE BEST OF NEPAL Namaste 2023 marks the 70th anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Everest by Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. This momentous event was arguably the spark that first ignited interest in Nepal as an adventure travel destination. With its welcoming people and wonderful mix of landscape; terraced farmland and rich montane forest leading northwards to range upon range of towering peaks, it’s hardly surprising that Nepal has gone on to become one of the world’s most popular places to visit for keen trekkers and mountaineers. We have been travelling and trekking in Nepal for 30 years, and our unbeatable collection of 30 holidays, includes everything from classic lodge-based itineraries in the Everest and Annapurna regions, to remote-area camping treks and expeditions to several 6000 metre trekking peaks. Working with the very best local agencies, we pride ourselves on our superior itineraries, premium standards of service and great value for money. So the only question left is where to go. See our ‘Best for’ list, to help you decide where your next adventure could be.

BEST FOR EVEREST BASE CAMP

BEST FOR CLIMBING 6000M PEAKS

Everest Base Camp is one of the world’s bucket list destinations. Our favourite way to get there, veers off from the main route after Namche Bazaar, and winds its way through the mighty Himalaya and up through the Gokyo Valley. Here you’ll climb Gokyo Ri and be rewarded with incredible views, before climbing over the Cho La pass and trekking towards Everest Base Camp.

Nepal, the land of the Himalayas, is known as a mountaineers and trekkers paradise to the world. An iconic Nepalese peak, Mera, is a stunning viewpoint for 6 of the world’s 8000m peaks; Everest, Kangchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse, Everest and Cho Oyu. It’s officially classed as one of the highest trekking peaks in Nepal and no previous mountaineering experience is required.

The Ultimate Everest Trek | EVL

BEST FOR OFF-THEBEATEN-TRACK KE prides itself in finding remote and little visited regions, and we have an abundance of trips that will really take you off-the-beaten-track. Visit the ‘Wild West’ region of Inner Dolpo and one of the most alluring corners of Nepal, and follow in the footsteps of ‘The Snow Leopard’ author, Peter Matthiessen.

Shey Gompa and Inner Dolpo | DOL

BEST FOR ANNAPURNAS Trekking to Annapurna Base Camp is a slightly less taxing route and shorter than trekking to Everest Base Camp. It’s not as high and the trails are normally much quieter than the Everest routes. Our favourite Annapurna trekking holiday heads to Poon Hill to witness the stunning sunrise, before spending the night at Annapurna Sanctuary (4130m).

BHUTAN

ISOLATED, PEACEFUL AND UNSPOILED Bhutan is known as ‘Druk Yul’ - the Land of the Thunder Dragon and is a fiercely independent kingdom. By actively restricting tourist numbers, this tiny mountainous country, has preserved its cultural identity and protected its environment. As a result, the fortunate visitor will find Bhutan a revelation. The mountains are considered sacred, so the majority of snow-capped peaks you see, have never been climbed including Gangkar Puensum (7570m), the world’s highest unclimbed peak.

Bhutan is well known for its colourful Buddhist festivals, locally known as ‘tshechu’, where tranquillity temporarily takes a back seat, and brightly coloured dancers engage in celebrations. The locals socialise and dress in their best gho (robes for men) and kiro (clothes for women) to enjoy the festivities, cleanse themselves of bad karma and receive blessings. KE has been going to Bhutan for over 30 years, and we’ve created 11 trips for every level of adventurer. Each of our Bhutanese trips, provide an unforgettable insight into the mysterious ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’.

SOUTHERN AFRICA

4 REASONS TO VISIT SOUTHERN AFRICA Southern Africa’s incredible diversity makes people come back time and time again. The landscapes are breathtaking, the wildlife viewing first-class, the food is simply delightful and activities are in abundance. Here are 4 reasons to visit.

Alison Bembridge Meet Alison, she’s KE’s expert for our Southern Africa holidays and has worked for KE for nearly 14 years.

AMAZING WALKING

BEST FOR SAFARI

Sweeping for 700 miles through two countries and five South African Provinces, the Drakensberg Mountain range is an area of spectacular beauty, with peaks that exceed 3000m. The landscapes are rugged, with natural pools and glowing rocks, and the hundreds of caves tell the story of the nomadic San people who recorded their lives in rock art paintings. There’s definitely magic in the mountains of the Drakensberg.

If you want to tick off all the Big Five in one day, then Southern Africa is one of the few places on Earth where you can do this. Elephants are fairly common, as are zebra, giraffe and antelope. Lion and leopard are harder to find but usually reside somewhere along all of our routes. Hippos are found in the Okavango Delta and on most trips there is a strong likelihood that buffalo may be seen.

GREAT FOR ALL SEASONS

DON’T FORGET THE ISLANDS

Southern Africa offers all-year round adventure. From the dust free months in spring when the landscape is green and lush, to the dry months of June to October, when the animals pack themselves around the watering holes, making wildlife much easier to find. Winter brings more changeable weather and rainfall, but this is when Victoria Falls is at its fullest and most spectacular.

Madagascar is the world’s 4th largest island and is famous for its wildlife. With 70 species of lemur, found nowhere else on earth, white sand beaches, stunning rainforest and delicious food, this spot offers once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Reunion Island on the other hand, is a hiker’s paradise. With over 1000kms of well-marked trails, its rugged interior beholds high passes, lush vegetation, exotic bird species, volcanic summits and towering waterfalls.

ON THE INCA TRAIL TO MACHU PICCHU Peru is the perfect adventure travel destination, offering ancient civilisations, turquoise glacier lakes, snowy ridges and remote trekking routes. Anne made the journey to visit the Peruvian Andes, and one of the most spectacular Seven Wonders of the World in 2019.

There are some places in the world that you have seen photographs of, and you say to yourself: ‘one day I’m going to go there’. This is how our bucket list started. Then in 2019, my husband Jim and I decided it was time to put the list into action. The place we had both wanted to go to for a long time was at the top: Machu Picchu.

Anne Downie KE traveller and neighbour at the famous outdoor shop George Fisher in Keswick, Anne loves nothing more than a KE trekking holiday. She and her husband Jim have now done a few, including Costa Rica Walks and Wildlife, Everest Base Camp Trek in Nepal, and Mount

The colours of the rocks, reds and yellows, gleamed in the bright light of the day. Not another soul to be seen. How amazing was this - to have the whole mountains to ourselves? As we trekked the trail, at the highest point we were treated to views of a small glacial lake undisturbed by civilisation. The sense of achievement on reaching this point was incredible. It wasn’t until we set off bright and early to cross the Cusichaca River and trek through the cloud forest that we encountered people - more than we had been used to in our complete solitude, at least.

On other days, we descended into valleys and passed small hamlets, an Inca ruin with grazing pastures. It was hard to imagine that people lived at such height, but our guide Henry informed us this was where our porters came from. Our trek continued, reaching the heights of the Dead Woman’s Pass and the Runccuracay Pass. The terrain changing again to wider paths paved with original Inca stones, luxuriant forests, a tunnel carved in the hillside by the Incas, all backed with tremendous mountain views. Henry told us that he felt this part of the walk had a special place in his heart. He felt connected to the spirits and gods. A place to walk in peace and tranquillity. When arriving at our last camp, the surroundings were unbelievable. I just stood gazing. Snow-capped Salkantay (6271m), was towering above us. I felt so lucky to be here. Just to sit and watch the clouds move across the sky, the mist to come and go.

INCA TRAIL AND ALTERNATIVE TREKS To see the mountains disappear and then to reappear. This was the most wonderful view I have ever set my eyes on. Until the morning, when we saw the light of sunrise covering Salkantay. It was just something else - absolutely staggering. The next day was the big one reaching Machu Picchu. We set off on our descent of 3000 steps passing the Inca ruin settlement of Winay Huayna. The amazing architecture is still visible to this day. The final section was round the mountain to the Sun Gate for our first sighting of Machu Picchu, the famous Lost City of the Incas.

At this point I could feel the excitement rising and adrenalin rush as we neared the final hundred metres or so. Then, we were there! Machu Picchu standing in all its glory. Magnificent. Beautiful. WOW! Such a sight. I felt the emotions creeping up inside me. Was it that I had completed the trek, or was it this incredible place standing there in front of me that got to me, and made my jaw drop open? Both, I think. What I would like to say is that if you have any inclination to visit Machu Picchu, then go for it. It’s by far the best experience of my life. The Inca Trail and Beyond | INC

LEADER SPOTLIGHT

Val Pitkethly Val is one of KE’s longest serving and most experienced Himalayan and Andean trek leaders, she leads our trips in Peru’s Huayhuash Mountains. An avid mountaineer, Val has been guiding since 1985, and has led mountain treks throughout the world, including Nepal, India, Pakistan, Bhutan, Tibet, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Tanzania, Kenya and Morocco. She has literally brought light to hundreds of people through her Light Education Development project (LED), which provides solar lighting to remote communities. LED was founded in the late 1990s by Val, who over many years has established strong and trusted relationships with communities in the highland villages of the Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash ranges in northern Peru, and over the year has supplied solar lighting units to over 4000 families.

MOROCCO

4 SEASONS IN MOROCCO AUTUMN

Avoid the hot summer sun as the temperatures start to decrease. The leaves on the deciduous trees start to change, and the diverse landscape is an array of ever-changing colour. You’ll get dry sunny days, but it’s worth preparing for the occasional, welcomed, rainfall.

SPRING

With generally warm and dry weather, and with most of the snow gone from all but the mountains’ highest peaks, it’s a great time for high mountain trekking, desert activities and getting out and about on the bike. We love Morocco here at KE. It’s such an exotic adventure destination and so close to home for those of us in the UK/Europe. From the stark beauty of the mountains, to the magic of the cities, this intriguing and captivating country, will make you feel as though you have stepped into an Ali Baba folk tale. As you wander through the souks of Marrakech, the heavenly smells ignite your senses and a kaleidoscope of colour meets your eyes. While you trek through the mountainous terrain, you’ll snake through Berber valleys and you’re guaranteed to fall in love with the incredible landscape. Morocco is without a doubt, one of the most friendly, diverse and great value destinations that KE travels to, and the great thing is, adventures are all-year-round.

NATURAL WONDERS OF LATIN AMERICA

LATIN AMERICA A region which doesn’t do anything by halves, Latin America reigns when it comes to jaw-dropping, breath-taking, heart-thumping natural wonders. Andean peaks, tropical rainforest, impressive glaciers, endless deserts, active volcanoes and turquoise lagoons. The variety of landscapes will leave you in awe. From the top to the tip of Central and South America, here’s just a few to put on your list.

VOLCANIC HIGHLANDS

A loud-mouthed character in the Ring of Fire, Guatemala boasts nearly 40 volcanoes which make for a spectacular trekking region. Draped around the bewitching blue waters of Lake Atitlan, you can climb seven of these magnificent mountains in 2 weeks of adventure. Stand on top of Tajumulco, Central America’s highest peak, see sensational sunrise views from Volcan Zunil and watch Fuego illuminate the night sky with plumes of lava.

UNTAMED RAINFOREST

Rainforests are the guardians of a huge proportion of our planet’s biodiversity and a sight we should all experience. Along the Central American isthmus of Costa Rica and Panama, over 50% of the land mass is pristine jungle. In Costa Rica, you can spot the astonishing variety of wildlife which comes with primary rainforest, keeping your eyes peeled for sloths, a nearly endless array of monkeys and thousands of bird species. After, hop into Panama for a lofty walk on hanging bridges through breath-taking cloud forest.

MIGHTY WATERFALLS

The Guianas are the unknown gem of Latin America. Full of pristine rainforest, a melting pot of cultures and rare wildlife, these things alone make it worth a visit. But it is Kaieteur Falls, the highest single-drop waterfall in the world at over five times the height of Niagara Falls, which will make it unforgettable. Gaze at it first from above in a truly spectacular flight over the jungle before landing nearby to experience it up close.

GRANITE AND GLACIERS

There are countless unforgettable sights in Patagonia, but the two which top the list are its soaring towers and mighty glaciers. The spires and granite towers of the Torres del Paine soar above 2000m, dominating the surrounding landscape - a view like nowhere else on earth. A landscape forged by ice, your other must-see sights include the mighty Grey and Perito Moreno Glaciers, two very real reminders of the awesome power of nature. TOM RICHARDSON INTERVIEW How did it all begin?

An interview with Tom Richardson Tom Richardson is something of a living legend in the KE world - a status well earnt by taking hundreds of KE travellers into some of the world’s most stunning mountain ranges. He has a wealth of experience in the Greater Ranges, has climbed Cho Oyu, and was a leader of the expedition that put 3 KE leaders on the summit of Everest in May 2005. We asked him a few questions about his life as a leader to find out more.

In 1979, four of us decided to go to India and climb a peak in the Parbati Valley area near Manali. Later I climbed in Nepal and then in 1987, we first visited Pakistan to try to make the first ascent of Tupopdan a 6000m peak, spotted by one of my mentors the late Al Rouse, whilst he was climbing with Chris Bonington. This was the start of annual climbing and trekking trips across the world. I first encountered KE in 1988 below Gondogoro Peak in Pakistan and then frequently met groups around the world. I liked their style and their ethos matched my own. The leaders became friends and we often met in KE haunts before and after trips. Where have you led for KE? Many places, but my favourites include Nepal, India, Pakistan, Tibet, Mongolia, Uganda, Morocco, Ethiopia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and China. Which is your favourite trek to lead in Nepal? Close to my heart will always be Mera Peak. At 6400m I’ve climbed it more than 20 times and love it. The views include six 8000m peaks and a dramatic high camp. I get great satisfaction from helping determined

members to reach the summit and return safely. It’s a challenge but one that can be achieved by non-mountaineers. It is a life changing experience for everyone. You also lead KE trips on Mount Khuiten in Mongolia. It’s the world’s most remote peak. Does it feel it when you’re there? It certainly does. I’ve been leading trips there since 2004 and it’s still a massive adventure. Camels carry luggage to base camp, we camp high on the glacier, and from the summit there are no signs of human life in any direction. What would you do if you weren’t a trek leader? Alongside working with KE, I write and edit for outdoor magazines and journals, and spent time writing a book a few years back. But really the answer is that I would still go trekking exploring and climbing in the Greater Ranges and wild places of the world, although they are even better shared.

CENTRAL ASIA/PAKISTAN/INDIA

WONDERS OF ASIA

CENTRAL ASIA A group of enigmatic countries tucked away between China and the Caspian Sea, Central Asia has been touted as an undiscovered secret for years - and it remains so today. If you’re looking for a taste of travel as it used to be, find it here, in the snow-capped peaks of the Pamir and Tien Shan, in the yurts of nomadic Kyrgyz herders, in bustling bazaars and glittering, blue-domed cities. Expect remote, little-visited trekking routes, Silk Road wonders and truly welcoming people.

PAKISTAN Did you know that the KE in KE Adventure stands for Karakoram Experience? Before we ran trips worldwide, it was in Pakistan that we first discovered the irresistible wonder of adventure travel to be found amongst the lofty peaks of the Karakoram mountains. Pakistan is still a destination any curious traveller will fall in love with, as we did all those years ago. Trek across glaciers and alpine meadows, stand amongst giants as you reach the foothills of 8000m peaks, cycle on the high-roads of Gilgit-Baltistan, and drink it all in knowing you’re experiencing a true once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Winter is an inspiring time to visit destinations in Europe. WHY KE?

WHY KE?

YOUR MONEY IS SAFE

We are fully bonded through both ABTA for all Land Only packages sold, and have an ATOL license, issued by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) which covers all flight inclusive packages that we sell. Put simply, your money is 100% protected when you book with KE.

ADVENTURES FOR EVERYONE

30% of our trips are graded as physically challenging or tough, 35% are graded moderate and 35% leisurely. So we really do have holidays for walkers, trekkers & cyclists of all abilities. Some like to travel as part of a small group, whilst others prefer travelling alone, as a couple or with friends or family on a self-guided trip. Our self-guided holidays allow a greater degree of flexibility, and in most cases will be at the more ‘leisurely’ end of our range. We can also put on private departures of all of our holidays; a popular option for when you’re looking to do a trip of a lifetime with friends or family, often to celebrate an anniversary or significant birthday.

PIONEERING

We’ve never been afraid to push the boundaries, and have always been adventurous in our approach. In fact some would describe KE as a bit ‘edgy’. We’re often the first operator to launch trips to remote regions of the world, and have many unique trips and unusual activities that others wouldn’t consider offering. A few examples would be dog sledding on frozen Lake Khuvsgul in Mongolia, E-Mountain Biking in Mustang in Nepal and ascending the world’s two highest volcanoes in Chile.

CARING FOR THE PLANET

We do our utmost to be respectful, to protect the environment and ensure that local communities benefit from the tourism that we bring to their regions. We acknowledge that there is a climate crisis and are aware of the responsibilities that we have. Since January 2020 we have been offsetting all of our emissions through our partner Livelihoods Funds, who support a number of fantastic reforestation and rural energy projects around the world. Our focus now is on measuring and reducing emissions wherever possible.
