A special feature brought back once more for 2010, is an Internet link to all the producer listings — a feature supported by Tourism Kamloops. All of the producer listings you see in this guide will be added to its website and linked to an interactive map. The site will be in full operation by late spring. Just go to www. kamloopsfarmfresh.com. The Farm Fresh Guide is a co-operative effort of the Kamloops

Watch for producers displaying these logos Environmental Farm Plan Environmental farm planning is a voluntary process that producers can use to identify both environmental strengths and any potential risks on their farms. If needed, an action plan is developed to reduce risks. This national program is administered in B.C. through the B.C. Agriculture Council. This logo recognizes that the farm has completed its environmental plan.

B.C. Certified Organic The B.C. Certified Organic Program is a voluntary agri-food quality program sanctioned by the B.C. government (www.gov. bc.ca/agf ). It is administered through the Certified Organic Association of B.C. (COABC). Farms that meet the standards for production, processing and handling are eligible to use the term B.C. Certified Organic and the symbol checkmark in a box.

Verified Beef Program

VBP is a national on-farm food safety program for beef producers in Canada.  A farm registered with VBP has demonstrated through an audit that their food safety practices conform to program requirements. This program is based on the world recognized food safety standard known as HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control point) and is designed to help producers prevent, monitor and reduce food safety risks on their beef cattle farms.

B.C. AgriTourism Alliance Quality Assurance Program

This program has been developed in consultation with agritourism operators to establish consistent, quality agritourism experiences throughout B.C. Once an operation becomes accredited by BCATA, an excellent insurance program and provincial highway road signage are available. For more information e-mail: coordinator@agritourismbc.org

Daily News, and the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture and Lands. The Farm Fresh team acknowledges the many small business owners who recognize the value of supplying fresh, local produce and meats to area residents. As well, a special thank you goes out to various restaurant owners who have begun to search out local products for their menus. Finally, thank you to all the producers and commercial advertisers that have supported this publication, and to you, the consumer for supporting our local producers.

FISHERMANS CATCH WILD BC SALMON & SALES

9

Danny Arundel/Kelsey Kashluba 9290 Yellowhead Hwy, Heffley Creek, BC V0E 1Z0 Phone: 250-320-4449 E-mail: wild.salmon@hotmail.com Direct from the fisherman is the best way to buy Wild BC Salmon. Tanya-Ray is a 42ft commercial troller owned and operated by Danny Arundel. With close to 50 years experience and close attention to detail, our No. 1 priority is to provide the very best quality and value to our customer. Every fish is caught on a hook and line and brought onto the boat one at a time. The salmon we harvest is cleaned and frozen (temperatures of –40C) aboard ship within one hour of catch to lock in quality and freshness providing product to be savoured throughout the year. This process ensures the quality of the salmon. This years’ season started May 1 on the west coast of Vancouver Island just outside Tofino/Ucluelet. You will find Kelsey at area farmer’s markets starting May long weekend as she has pulled on her rubber boots and raingear to work the opening fishery. Mid-June, Tanya-Ray will head north to the Haida Guai to continue with the Northern fishery, then onto Tuna. We offer a variety of products. Salmon: whole, fillets, steaks, smoked (peppered, candied, tandoori, maple, lime, garlic, lox), burgers, smoked salmon cream cheese log. Tuna: medallions, loins, lox. Shrimp tails. New, this year, coconut candy. Farmers Markets: Downtown Kamloops Wednesday/Saturday. Sun Peaks Sunday, Vernon Monday/Thursday, Kelowna Wednesday/Saturday. Need ideas on how to prepare? Just ask! For orders or more information please phone, e-mail or come and see us at the market. If you would like fresh from the West Coast, e-mail and I will reply with more information.

DID YOU KNOW? British Columbia’s total provincial area (land and fresh water) is about 94.78 million hectares. That’s bigger than many countries in the world. But, less than 3% of that is suited to agriculture production. That means we must make sure we make best use of every available hectare and ensure it’s preserved to produce food and other agricultural products for future generations.

PROPER STORAGE OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES IS ESSENTIAL Properly storing fresh fruits and vegetables at home is important for many reasons. Improper storage of some whole fresh fruits and vegetables may cause

deterioration of both their flavour and nutrition profile. There are fruits that do not ripen further once harvested. Other fruits will continue to ripen after being harvested

because they naturally produce a gas called ethylene, (e.g. apples, tomatoes, ripe bananas). Ethylene triggers the ripening process; this in turn produces more ethylene

gas, which further accelerates the process. Exposure to ethylene causes vegetable deterioration, so fruits and vegetables should be stored separately in the refrigerator.

Chefs, growers fired up for Farm2Chefs event The Daily News n its second year, the Thompson-Shuswap Chef Farmer Collaborative is preparing for its first public event, the Farm2Chefs Aug. 7 at Thistle Farm in Westsyde. “There is no landmark summer culinary event in the area, so we really see this as an opportunity to create overall appeal,” says David Tombs, chef at the Brownstone restaurant, who is also the vice-president of the collaborative. Ed Walker, TRU culinary instructor and president of the new network, describes the event as a festival in the field. Tents will be set up where people can sample food and drink and learn about local foods. There will be activities for children and

live music. Four wineries, 14 chefs, two breweries and a “meadery” (which produces mead from honey) will take part. Fresh asparagus will be served to underscore the goal of the collaborative, to connect local farmers, producers and distributors with local chefs to create a sustainable food system. They are also dedicated to educating the public and the palate. Formed last year, the collaborative already includes about 25 chefs and 35 farmers, many of them having attended a formative “Grow-Op” event in February. As well, they have some “seed” money from Community Futures of

Thompson Country. The $7,500 will help with Farm2Chefs and was also plowed into a new website, www.tscfc.org. Members of the collaborative will be at the Kamloops Farmers’ Market every Saturday this season to sell tickets to Farm2Chef, and spread the wisdom of fresh and local food, where to buy it and how to use it. Tickets are $60 each or $20 for kids up to age 12. Children five and under are admitted free. The event is a fundraiser for a grant/loan program. Grants will support non-profit groups in food production and advocacy; low-interest loans will support for-profit growers wanting to increase productivity.
