one relationship at a time.

Now it’s time to take the next logical step:

Let’s change the world for everybody, right now.

I

mago Relationships International (IRI) has spent almost a decade honing its theory, refining its materials, and training the most effective relationship therapists on the planet. We have helped tens of thousands of people, from a range of cultures, all over the globe. But for all the help we have given, we have only reached a fraction of those in need. Most people simply can’t afford marriage counseling. Imago Outreach is our attempt to change that. IRI will take Imago Relationship Therapy to the world, providing our groundbreaking relationship workshops free of charge to those most at risk. With your help, we will start by developing two pilot programs in the U.S. that will reach two especially vulnerable groups: service men and women returning from active duty, and low-income couples. With the lessons we learn from these programs, we will launch similar outreach efforts all over the globe. It is our dream that not long from now, every couple in crisis will be able to get the help they need, regardless of their ability to pay.

Damaged relationships lead to emotional, financial, even physical problems

and they hurt our children the most.

U

nhappy relationships are not a personal problem; they are a societal problem. Divorcing couples in the U.S. often experience health declines, most likely because of the incredible stress.1 Women especially experience devastating economic consequences. Their household income drops an average of 26% and consequently bankruptcy is much more likely.2,3 For children, the effects are even more dire. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 28% of children in divorced-parent households live below the poverty line. Recent studies link divorce to a child’s increased risk of health problems, lower scholastic achievement, and even involvement in crime. One study suggests that between 20-25% of children in divorced families will exhibit severe emotional and behavioral problems.4 IRI knows that these problems can be solved. Imago Relationship Therapy is uniquely able to help heal unhappy relationships, even those in crisis. Imago Outreach will enable us to help those hardest hit by relationships in crisis, who are often the least able to get the help they need. 1 Michigan State University News Release 1/30/12 2 Study by Richard K. IRI is the best equipped organization of its kind to take on this project

because of our global perspective.

E

ven the best-intentioned therapists can struggle to overcome their natural cultural biases when trying to help people unlike themselves. It’s one of the reasons that so many nonprofits struggle when delivering cross-cultural mental health services. Since day one, Imago Relationships International has structured itself to overcome provincialism and create a form of relationship therapy that is truly universal. We have made it our business to reach out to therapists all over the planet, bring them into our organization, and learn from them. Thus far, we have trained over 2,400 therapists in 32 countries in Imago Relationship Therapy, and we have gained insight from each of them about relationships across the world. With each conference, with each newsletter, with each posting on our forum, we have gathered fresh information and generated new ideas. That’s why we are sure that Imago Outreach will be successful in its attempt to help people from all backgrounds. It’s in our nature to do so.

We have spent years developing and crafting our tool kit:

the world’s most sophisticated relationship technology .

T

echnology is not a word typically associated with therapy, but Imago Relationship Workshops qualify. We have taken our collective practical knowledge and crafted it into a tool to start to heal damaged relationships – for up to 20 couples at a time, over just two days. We don’t claim that our workshops will do the job of an extended course of therapy, but they have proven to be an excellent form of intervention for relationships on the brink. Over 85% of respondents to our latest survey who described their relationship as “in crisis” said that our workshop helped them reconnect. And because our workshops focus on providing participants with the tools they need to help themselves, they have lasting effects. The best curriculum in the world wouldn’t mean anything without great teachers. Fortunately, IRI has already established a mechanism to train professionals to host workshops, and to create faculty to train more. Most nonprofits in the mental health field struggle for years to develop a curriculum and training methodology. Imago Outreach will be ready to help from day one.

We’re developing an infrastructure to support our therapists and clients .

that can be accessed from anywhere on the globe .

I

RI is developing a new web strategy that will be fundamental to Imago Outreach. We’re changing the way we work online so that our therapists can focus on working face-to-face. A reinvented client-centered site will explain Imago Relationship Therapy and allow online registration for workshops. An all-new professional site will make launching, prepping and coordinating workshops as seamless as possible. Robust new systems will track client data while preserving confidentiality, making monitoring and evaluation of Imago Outreach programs a matter of course. At the same time, IRI will be introducing online educational opportunities, so that many more therapists worldwide will be able to receive cost-effective and convenient training in Imago theory and practice. We will leverage this technology so that our resources – and our time – aren’t wasted on repetitive tasks but instead are focused on helping our clients. And these systems will be scalable, so that our ambition won’t ever outstrip our capabilities.

Imago Relationship therapy’s dedication to social action

was a gift from its originator.

H

arville Hendrix, Ph.D., set out the theory of Imago Relationship Therapy in his bestseller Getting the Love You Want: A Guide for Couples. When he and his partner, Helen LaKelly Hunt, Ph.D., later co-founded IRI, they did so in the belief that Imago Relationship Therapy’s highest purpose was social action. Saving relationships, in their eyes, is the first step toward saving communities. Since its creation, Imago Therapy has been instrumental in a variety of social causes. The Imago Peace Project taught the Imago Dialogue to Palestinians and Israelis, and Hutus and Tutsis to help increase understanding and lessen conflict. Heart Circle Sangha used Imago Relationship Therapy to help Sri Lankan villagers cope with the damage inflicted upon relationships by civil war and tsunami. Harville and Helen recently helped lead Project Dallas, a citywide effort to highlight the link between healthy personal relationships and healthy communities. But for all these good works, IRI has focused primarily on providing training and materials for its therapists in the field. With Imago Outreach, IRI will now fulfill its founders’ vision and make social action integral to our mission.

Imago Outreach for veterans will help those who have already helped us:

service people returning from active duty.

E

ven as the U.S. winds down the longest military engagement in its history, the strain of service will have lasting effects on many military families. Close to 30,000 military marriages ended in divorce in 2011, the highest level since 1999.1 The strain of combat, the difficulties of separation, even the adjustment of returning home all combine to put great stresses on military relationships. The Department of Veteran Affairs estimates that 20% of returning veterans experience symptoms of PTSD, which can have severe negative effects on family functioning. Imago Outreach for Veterans will help by offering returning service members a customized program based on our Getting the Love You Want weekend workshop for couples. We believe that this small-group program, with its track record of reconciling couples in crisis, will provide effective and much-needed intervention for military families. Our pilot program will ally itself with veterans groups to garner military clients in specific locales where Certified Imago TherapistsŽ are ready to help. We will carefully monitor the program’s results, adjusting the workshop to meet the specific needs of this group. When the pilot is completed, we plan to first institute this program nationally, and then broaden it to help military families around the globe wherever Imago Relationship Therapy is practiced. 1 USA Today, December 13, 2011 2 Department of Veterans Affairs

Imago Outreach For Families will ensure that relationship therapy

is affordable and accessible everywhere.

P

overty is both a cause and an effect of troubled relationships. Without sufficient resources, couples can’t get the help that they need, which can lead to the end of their relationship, which in turn can further their descent into poverty. Imago Outreach For Families is designed to help break this cycle. IRI plans to offer its Getting the Love You Want weekend workshop for couples to those who would normally not have the means to attend. Our pilot program will experiment with integrating participants into existing workshops and with creating Outreach-only workshops, to see which means is more effective for helping these couples. We will carefully monitor the pilot’s results, adjusting it as needed. When the pilot is completed, we plan to institute this program nationally, and then broaden it to help couples in need around the globe. To cope with the forecast demand for trained Imago Workshop Providers stemming from this program, we plan to implement a training module based on the popular “Teach for America” model. IRI will devote resources to train therapists who pledge to participate in the program long term. This will make institutional support of the program integral to the membership of IRI. 1 Center for Economic and Policy Research 2 Study by Jay L. I

mago Relationships International is ready to take its commitment to helping relationships worldwide the next logical step with Imago Outreach. However, while we are proud of the

fact that IRI has always kept both membership fees and overhead low, we are consequently unable to self-fund our commitments to these programs. To help couples worldwide, starting with military and low-income couples in the U.S., we will need your help.

The Imago Outreach for Veterans Pilot Program

W

e plan to start our program in eight locations throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region of the United States from Norfolk, Virginia to Aberdeen, Maryland. There are two reasons for selecting this area: (1) there is an extremely high concentration of military personnel in this region, and (2) this area hosts the largest group of Certified Imago Therapists速 in the world. The program duration will be approximately two years and will follow a specific phased modification/delivery/evaluation model. We invite you to request a copy of the program model. Imago Workshop Providers (two per workshop) will be asked to lead the pilots based upon their knowledge of the effects of PTSD on intimate relationships. Many of our members already specialize in the treatment of PTSD and others can be trained if necessary. IRI has invested time and resources into an online learning platform that will be used to deliver no-cost trainings to those recruited for the program. Participation will be limited to 20 couples per workshop. Consensus among Workshop Providers is that this is an optimal size, creating opportunities for personal attention while supporting group interaction. Keeping numbers low will also reduce costs related to space, supplies, and on-site staff support. Of course, we will turn away no one who seeks our help. A follow-up one-day workshop will be offered six months after each initial workshop to monitor participant progress and reinforce positive behavioral changes. Formative and summative evaluations are an essential part of the phased program delivery model. We will collect and analyze both qualitative and quantitative data regarding the effectiveness of this program. A summary of evaluation results will be provided to program funders.

IRI fundraiser 3.indd 22

10/4/13 12:30 PM

We anticipate the following needs and expenses for the pilot program: ►

An experienced program coordinator to manage all phases of the program from modification to evaluation will devote 50% of working hours to this program (the remaining time is given to the Imago Outreach for Families Pilot Program). The cost of salary and benefits at 50% is $28,500 per year, $57,000 for a two-year commitment.

A professional editor to help modify the Getting The Love You Want weekend workshop for couples will cost $3,575 at $65 per hour for an anticipated 55 hours.

An external consultant to monitor and evaluate the program to ensure best practices are followed and outcomes are measured will cost $8,500 at $85 per hour for an estimated 100 hours.

Stipends for Workshop Providers to compensate them for time, travel, and preparation will be $500 per day. The total cost of the eight workshops and eight follow-up workshops (each with two presenters) will be $24,000.

Program marketing, including a brochure explaining the program to military families, will cost approximately $7,500.

Adapting web-based delivery system for specialized training in PTSD and other issues facing military families and delivering these trainings will cost $2,500.

An estimated $16,000 in miscellaneous expenses including space rental (if applicable), refreshments for participants, paper supplies/workshop manuals, travel costs for staff, lodging, and any costs related to having an outside expert on PTSD on site if necessary.

In addition to the above, we anticipate 10% overhead to cover additional marketing and/or staff support as needed.

We estimate the total cost of this program pilot will be $130,983. We will reach 160 couples at a cost of $817 per couple. Please feel free to request a copy of the budget and/or delivery model for this program.

Imago Outreach For Families Pilot Program

W

e plan to start our program at five locations in the New York City Metro Area. There are two reasons for this specific location: (1) NYC has a high concentration of families living at or below the poverty line, and (2) the proximity to IRI headquarters will significantly reduce travel costs for staff and ensure that multiple staff are onsite to monitor each workshop. The program duration will be approximately one year and will follow a specific phased delivery/evaluation model. We invite you to request a copy of the program model. The goal is to work closely with community-based groups and counseling centers to identify those fitting the participant profile. Preference will be given to couples with children who demonstrate a critical need for our services (i.e. separation or divorce and family dissolution is a probable outcome). Participation will be limited to 20 couples per workshop. A smaller group of a 30 participating couples will be integrated into existing Getting the Love You Want couples weekend workshops to measure any difference in outcomes between the pilot workshops and non-pilot workshops. We want to determine if the target population of this program receives more or less benefit from sharing the experience with others not in the program. A follow-up one-day workshop will be offered three to six months after each initial workshop to monitor participant progress and reinforce positive behavioral changes. Formative and summative evaluations are an essential part of the phased program delivery model. We will collect and analyze both qualitative and quantitative data regarding the effectiveness of this program. A summary of evaluation results will be provided to program funders.

Compensation for Workshop Providers into whose workshops program participants are integrated will be $400 per couple—with 30 participating couples, the total is $12,000.

An estimated $14,000 in miscellaneous expenses including space rental (if applicable), refreshments for participants, paper supplies/workshop manuals, travel costs for staff, and lodging.

In addition to the above, we anticipate 10% overhead to cover additional marketing and/or staff support as needed.

We estimate the total cost of this program pilot will be $89,375. We will reach 130 couples at a cost of $688 per couple. Please feel free to request a copy of the budget and/or delivery model for this program.

Training Workshops Providers Initially, we will use current Imago Certified Couples Workshops Presenters for this pilot program. Once the pilot program evaluation is complete and assuming the results are unambiguously positive, IRI will move forward with a program expansion plan based on the “Teach for America” model. Additional funding will be sought to support program expansion. Please ask for a copy of the Imago Outreach for Veterans and Families Program Expansion Plan.
