The Importance of Encouraging Children’s Natural Tendency to Explore

By: Mecca Johnson, CPLP®, Exec. Dir. of Professional Development at Primrose Schools Exploration is a critical component of children’s development. It is one of the ways they learn about the world and how it works. Whether they are exploring ideas, relationships or objects, they are trying out or testing their ideas. The well-known developmental psychologist, Jean Piaget, called young children “natural scientists.” We know children need safe environments in which they can experiment—where they can take risks without fear of being told, “That’s not how you’re supposed to do that.” When we support their natural tendencies to try things out, we are cheering them on to discover and tackle new challenges. By acknowledging their efforts, we help them build determination and confidence in their own abilities. Primrose Schools brings exploration to life in its classrooms using its Balanced Learning© System where teachers direct some activities and follow children’s lead with others. Children have multiple opportunities to experiment and explore. The language-rich environment in each classroom supports conversations and collaboration between adults and children and between children and their peers. “Encouraging children to use their natural tendency to learn through play and exploration provides them with the opportunity to investigate topics that interest them in more depth which will help them develop into well-rounded, creative learners,” says Dr. Gloria Julius, Vice President of Education at Primrose Schools. “You are witnessing imagination in action when you observe a child spending just as much time playing with a box as with the toy that came in it.”

favorite book, and see if your child can imagine substituting someone he knows as the main character. Can you and your child imagine a different ending for the story? This is a great way to break down boundaries that tell us things have to be done one certain way. Explore an idea. Exploration can come in many forms, including an idea. Primrose believes that each child is unique, capable, curious, and in the process of discovering how the world works. The next time your child has an idea or question, turn the conversation into an investigation of ideas. For example, if your child asks, “Where do lions live?” try responding, “I’m not sure. Let’s find out.” Whether you find a book about lions or do an online search, you are likely to find out far more than just where lions live. Researching an area of interest is another form of exploration that shows your child one of the most important purposes of reading—to find answers to our specific questions and whole lot more. To learn more about how the Primrose School at Bentwater encourages a child’s natural tendency to explore, please visit www.PrimroseBentwater. com or call 770.529.3925 to arrange a tour of the campus.

Here are a few tips from Dr. Julius about facilitating your child’s natural tendency to explore: Avoid Dictating. At Primrose Schools, teachers give children the opportunity to explore through a blend of teacher-directed and childinitiated activities. At home, parents can implement this technique by allowing your child to explore a new toy before giving directions or demonstrating “how it’s supposed to be used.” For example, if your child decides a yellow building block makes really good dinosaur food, remember there is not a right or wrong way to play and learn. Take a step back, too much structure can take away the excitement of exploration. Finding new ways to use old toys is like going somewhere you have not been before. Create the environment. At Primrose, individual classrooms for each age group are well-equipped and engagingly decorated to create a safe, fun, nurturing atmosphere that stimulates learning, exploration and play. At home you can stimulate your child’s imagination by setting the stage for independent exploration. Identify your child’s interests and then create a safe setting where your child is free to explore. For example, if your child shows a fascination in nature, visit family-friendly parks and nature centers and let your child lead the way for the day. For younger children, give them the opportunity to explore their own world. Instead of limiting them to a specific room or area of your home, allow them to explore other spaces--with close supervision, of course! Create new stories and endings. Story telling is a wonderful way to expand children’s imaginations and is an important developmental milestone. During circle time at Primrose, teachers engage children in developmentally appropriate activities that incorporate story telling. At home, you can encourage your child to come up with a story about a pet or favorite friend. Need some help getting started? Start with a

Manager’s Report

Love Thy Neighbor? We all occasionally have disagreements with our neighbors. Minor things such as an overgrown tree hanging over the fence or a dog that barks all day can lead to conflict and uncomfortable relations between neighbors. All too often, we complain to family and friends about the problem but never actually air our concerns to the parties involved, face to face. When a conflict arises, you may want to consider just talking to your neighbor in a non-confrontational manner before taking your dispute straight to the HOA, code enforcement or the police. Remember the old proverb: “Good fences make for good neighbors”? Wisdom also says that “the same fence needs a gate to make good friends.” In some cases an un-kept yard or peeling paint are often the first publicly visible signs that an otherwise model neighbor is experiencing illness or financial difficulties and an offer to help may be warmly accepted. This is not always the case but it could happen. If you’ve given it your best effort and tried to work things out to no avail, then who do you call? Here is a quick reference guide to common complaints and where to go for help. DOGS – Whether it is a barking nuisance, a dog running loose, aggressive behavior while leashed or pet waste issues, official complaints should be made to the Paulding County Animal Control: 770-445-1511. STREET PARKING VIOLATIONS – The streets in Bentwater are public and under the domain of the county. Overnight street parking is prohibited. Please be respectful of neighbors who may have to park in the street for a few hours while the moving van is loading or unloading their belongings. If you are hosting a party and know that guests will need to park along the street, be courteous and let your neighbors know. Make sure your guests do not block anyone’s driveway. All street parking violations should be directed to Paulding County Parking Violations Division: 770-44-9768 NOISY NEIGHBORS – Loud parties, speeding cars, unruly children and other similar disturbances are under the jurisdiction of the Paulding County Sheriff’s Department. Non-emergency calls should be directed to 770-443-3010.

munity Management team makes regular monthly inspection drives throughout the community. Chances are we are aware of the situation and have contacted the homeowner to resolve the issues. We have guidelines that must be followed in contacting a resident regarding a compliance violation as well as the timeframe they are given to remedy the issue. You are welcome to contact the HOA staff about your concerns and we welcome another set of eyes as there are 1700 homes to inspect monthly. However, making demands that the HOA staff “fix it” and tell you what action we have taken are unreasonable. There are legal guidelines that we must follow as well as all correspondence with owners is confidential. EMPTY HOMES VS. BANK-OWNED PROPERTIES – Not only is it frustrating for you as a neighbor to live next door to an empty home, but figuring out who is responsible for the maintenance can be confusing and extremely frustrating as well for the Community Manager.

Here’s how it works: When an owner “walks away” from their home it can take the bank months and even years to officially ARC VIOLATIONS – You think your neighbor has made a foreclose on the property. When we refer to “officially forequestionable modification to their home or has added something closing” we mean that the foreclosure deed is recorded with the which requires approval. Remember that most exterior modifications require ARC approval. If you have questions or issues county and the bank officially owns the home. Until the HOA regarding ARC guidelines and/or approvals please contact the office receives the recorded deed from the courts, the home is HOA office with your questions or concerns. GENERAL RULE technically still the owner’s responsibility. At this point, the OF THUMB: assume you need to submit an ARC modification HOA has to be careful about spending money on maintenance application. Consequences for not following the process could of the home and yard because once the home forecloses, all of include large monetary fines, legal action and/or tearing out the the charges are wiped out and the Association will not be reimbursed for the money they have spent. However, once the bank unapproved modification. takes ownership, the HOA can perform what we call “self-help” RESIDENT PROPERTY MAINTENANCE – You think that (which means minimal general maintenance to the yard and your neighbor’s home is an eyesore. Their home needs painting home) and bill it to the bank’s account. Those costs are either and their yard is full of weeds. What can you do? The Com- paid by the bank or recouped once a closing occurs. Page 10 Bentwater: The Gazette May 2014

Manager’s Report

Most Common Compliance Violations in Bentwater The process for compliance violation notices and fining are as follows, effective immediately: STEP 1: Courtesy letter * Sent to the owner of record of any property that during inspection drives is noted as being in violation of the covenants. (i.e. exterior cosmetic repairs to the home, basketball goals set up in cul de sacs, dead landscaping, unkempt yards, broken fences, inoperable vehicle parked in a driveway or yard and more). * The owner will have fifteen days (15) to correct the violation and notify the HOA office.

STEP 2: Second Courtesy Letter

STEP 3: Notice of Fine

* Upon re-inspection, a second violation letter will be mailed out informing the owner that the violation still exists.

* Notice mailed to the owner that their account has been charged the $25 fine for non-compliance.

* If the issue has not been resolved within the next 15 days, a $25 fine will be charged to the owner’s account with an additional $25 every 15th day until the violation has been corrected and the manager is notified.

* Additional $25 will be charged every 15 days (up to $50/month) until the violation has been corrected.

* After the 15th day, if no notice of correction has been received, we will re-inspect the property.

Please understand that if your account is charged with a fine, you will be responsible for payment of the fine or your family’s amenity access cards will be deactivated until the account is brought current. Let’s strive for 100% commitment that everyone strives to keep their property up to community standards.

Below are the most common violations that the Homeowner’s Association has to cite and fine our residents for. Please take a look around your own home and property and make sure it’s in tip-top shape: Trash Cans – Trash and recycling cans are often left on the street or in plain view on days other than pick-up day. Neither is allowed. These bins are only allowed on the street from 6:00 Monday evening until 6:00 Tuesday evening (the only day trash collection is allowed in the neighborhood). These bins must be stored out of sight from street view at all other times.

branches, hedge clippings, etc. are not left in your yard. Also, please put away all yard equipment (rakes, shovels, empty flower pots, bags of soil or rock, etc.) away and out of street view.

Failure to Submit ARC Paperwork – In order to insure that the beauty of our community remains intact, any changes in paint, roofing, landscape, fencing, etc. must be approved by the ARC committee. The forms may be obtained online on the community website or from the HOA office. Individuals who do not submit this paperwork will be fined without exception.

Street Parking – Street parking is not allowed on Bentwater streets. Our streets are not wide enough to accommodate other cars safely going around a parked vehicle, and therefore it poses a risk for other drivers. Because our streets are public streets, you should call the Paulding County Sherriff’s Department at 770-443-9768 to report a street parking violation.

Mail Boxes – Please make sure that your mailbox is clean and freshly painted with all numbers clearly visible and straight, a door and flag that are in good repair and fully operable, and seated on a sturdy, freshly painted post. Should you need to purchase a new mailbox, you may call Ace Hardware at 678-363-8191. To purchase a new post, contact the HOA office.

Mildew – All homes, sidewalks, porches, steps, shutters, etc. in Bentwater must be clean and free of dirt and mildew. Pressure washing is a quick fix for these issues and will make your home look fresh and clean.

Weeds and Yard Debris – Please make sure that your flower beds and lawns are weed-free, and that all fallen Page 12

Roofing – New roof? Different color? You MUST submit an ARC application!!!!

Faded Exterior Paint – Please make sure that the paint on your porch, siding, trim, shutters and door are kept fresh. Should you desire to change your paint color scheme, you must obtain an ARC application and submit your new color scheme choices for review.

Landscaping Tips

May Landscape Tips ~ Courtesy of Greenwood Group Spring is finally upon us! It is time to start making preparations to get your lawn and shrubs ready for coming heat and drought. If you have an irrigation system, make sure you go thru check for broken heads or lines so that water will not be wasted. Water your turf and shrubs more, but less often, to help develop deeper roots.

keep any eye on if you are having a lot of run off or not. If so do split days of watering so that more water is absorbed. Do not wait until it is completely dry before watering. I always like to set irrigation on Fescue to run several days in a row and then give it several days to dry out before mowing, then water the day or so after mowing.

Warm season turf care: (Bermuda, Zoysia, and Centipede) May is the perfect time of year to top dress your warm season turf if you have not done it before. Use a soil / sand top dress mix (you can get these from local mulch and soil wholesaler) over the top of the soil as a whole or you can just fill in any holes or tire ruts. Before you begin topdressing make sure you have mowed the grass down very low and aerate. Then apply a thin layer of top dress mix and smooth it out evenly throughout. Apply a summer fertilizer, then turn on the water and watch your new lawn grow. In 2-3 weeks you will be able to make your first cut. If you would like a free quote for top dressing or our 7 round turf program please email Tony at tmorton@greenwoodgroup.net.

Mulch and Pine straw: Now is also a good time to remulch and straw your plant beds.

Cool season turf care: (Fescue) Keep mowing your Fescue high and keep it watered. Water longer less often to help your cool season grasses develop deeper roots. You may have to

Shrub Care: Fertilize all of your yellowing or struggling shrubs. This is the time of year they really flourish and after the rough winter, they need to push some new growth. Also keep any eye out for any pest, (Japanese Beetles, Aphids) and start spraying for leaf spots that normally develop on any of your shrubs like Hawthornes and Roses. If you would like a free quote for our 4 round shrub program please email Tony at tmorton@greenwoodgroup.net. Ant beds: Fire ants are usually going full bore this time of year. Make sure you continue to treat your entire lawn or beds as they appear. Do not try and apply ant bait on beds that get stirred up by mowers or your foot. Wait and treat them when they are less active for the bait to be more effective.

On October 1, 2013 a brand new Paulding County ordinance went into effect pertaining to Golf Carts and their use on public streets. Since the streets in Bentwater are public streets, they are subject to this ordinance and it will be enforced by the Sherriff’s Department. With summer fast approaching, those with golf carts will certainly want to be informed. Please take time to go to our website at www. bentwater-hoa.com, click on the HOA Information tab, go to Official Forms and Documents, then scroll down to the Paulding County Ordinances and Laws tab to see the entire ordinance. Checklist for Mailboxes in Bentwater This is a great time to take a look at your mailbox and make sure that it is up to compliance standards. You can keep from receiving a compliance letter and possibly a fine by taking care of a few simple things: 1. Post - Make sure the post is securely in the ground, not wobbly, and is standing up straight. There are certain regulations from the U.S. Postal Service concerning post placement that must be followed. The regulation states, “When installing your mailbox, be sure to place it so that the door is within 6-8 inches of the curb. This prevents the mailbox from sticking out too far into the street and risking it being hit by a vehicle, or being set too far back from the street for the postal delivery worker to reach your mailbox from the vehicle. The height from the road to the bottom of your mailbox should be between 41 and 45 inches.” Please check to make sure your mailbox is in compliance with this regulation. 2. Address Plate - Check to insure that the number plaque is securely on the mailbox with all of the numbers present 3. Door and Flag - Both the door and flag must be present, in good repair and operational 4. Clean It Up - Mailbox needs to be clean and free from debris left by perching birds 5. Faded Paint - Mailbox needs to look fresh, not faded. If the box itself is in good shape but it needs a fresh coat of paint, you may purchase that at Ace Hardware. The Seven Hills Ace Hardware store has closed, but Ace of East Paulding located at 263 East Palding Drive in Dallas carries all of the approved supplies for repair and replacement. You may call them at 678-363-8191. 6. Mailbox Posts - If you need a replacement post, please call the HOA office directly.

Tidal Wave News Tidal Wave Swimming is proud and thankful of its relationship with the Bentwater neighborhood. Many young swimmers have had the opportunity to pursue their goals in competitive swimming. Our team continues to grow, and as we do, the opportunities for young student-athletes grow as well. Tidal Wave Swimming just finished its short course season with great results! The season saw 3 Tidal Wave swimmers win state titles!!! One swimmer was the high point scorer for her age group at the state championships!!! On the fourth weekend of March, Tidal Wave competed in the Northern Divisional Championship securing a third place team finish!!! Bentwater residents were critical to Tidal Wave’s success at the Divisional meet. Matt Clark won every freestyle event in the senior age group!!! And, Matt was far from the only Bentwater scorer at the meet. The following is a list of residents who contributed by scoring points for Tidal Wave at the Divisional meet: AJ Buzzelli, Ashley Buzzelli, Ben Buzzelli, Andrew Clark, Daniel Clark, Joseph Clark, Matt Clark, Cole Harvey, Nick Helms, Sarah Helms, Jack Pursley and Savannah Volden Tidal Wave invites all interested residents to come to the pool. Try a practice. We would love to offer more young people the opportunity to develop swimming skills, pursue swimming goals, and ultimately create collegiate opportunities not otherwise available. Interested in year round swimming? Please contact Head Coach Jim McGinnis at jim_mcginnis@bellsouth.net or 404-444-8564.

McNack’s Kitchen... If you have the desire to cook, you can cook, and we can help you.

Get Fresh this Spring Spring is the time of year where food is light and fresh. We are putting away the heavy sauces, stews and hearty meals for the next six months in favor of fresh fruits and vegetables and lighter, vibrant preparations for our proteins. If you haven’t planted an herb garden before, this is the perfect time to start thinking about it. It’s not a lot of work and you will love the benefit of having fresh herbs at your fingertips!

Here’s how: • Timing for planting your herbs certainly varies based on where you live and should be after the last frost. In Atlanta, the average last frost is late March so an April 1st start is perfect. • If you want to get a head start, you can start your herbs in planters in a sunny spot indoors. • You want a nice sunny spot where the herbs will get plenty of sun and water but not sit in a puddle. Plant-

ing in the ground will help establish better roots and help them not dry out when you go out of town for summer vacation. • Most of the herbs will only make it until the first winter frost but some (e.g. Rosemary) will last all year. In fact, rosemary is a pretty herb to plant near an entry door so you can smell it year round. • Go to your herb garden daily if you

can, take a pair of scissors and snip fresh herbs for your meal. If you don’t need them, cut some anyway and give to your neighbors. You want to encourage your little babies to grow! Definitely cut them back if you see flowers. Don’t be intrigued by their beauty! • If growing mint for your mojitos, be sure to plant it in its own pot as it will take over your garden!

The great thing about the foods that are best in the spring is they all go so well together. Watercress, spinach and baby lettuce are at their peak. Why not make a mixed green salad, throw in some radishes or beets for color, slice an orange for a citrus flavor and top with a poppy seed dressing? Throw in some fresh mint from your herb garden and you have a healthy bowl full of fresh yumminess! You could also make a sautéed vegetable medley of asparagus and peas for a great side dish to accompany just about any meal. Artichokes!! Did we mention artichokes? There is nothing like a steamed artichoke. If you like, you can dip the warm, cooked leaves in butter or hollandaise for added flavor. You can even get a little fancier and stuff the flower with breadcrumbs before cooking, or marinate in your favorite tangy vinaigrette. The possibilities for spring fruits and vegetables are endless!! We LOVE this time of year!

Roasted Asparagus and Tomatoes with Shaved Parmesan Ingredients:

1 bunch of prepared asparagus 1 pint of grape tomatoes Olive oil

Recipe of the Month Courtesy of McNack’s Kitchen

mcnackskitchen.com

Salt and Pepper Shaved Parmigiano Reggiano (use a vegetable peeler to shave it)

Preparing Asparagus:

Before you can cook asparagus, you need to know how to prepare it. Here are some simple steps to perfect asparagus every time! 1) Pick quality asparagus at the store. We prefer the stalks that are not too thick or too skinny…usually about the size of pencil or maybe just a bit thicker. Check the tips of the asparagus for any mushy parts and avoid those bunches. Check the ends to make sure they are not too dried out. 2) Cut off the ends. We usually leave the asparagus in the rubber bands for easy cleanup. You’ll want to cut at least an inch off the bottom. The best way to know where to cut is to take one stalk between the fingers of both of your hands and bend until it breaks. Where it breaks is the ideal spot to cut. It might seem like a waste but remember that asparagus grows in dry regions in sand and that bottom part is extremely tough. Get rid of it! 3) Rinse the asparagus. 4) Peel the ends, generally peel about the bottom half of the remaining stalk. This is time-consuming but it is amazing how much of a difference this makes. If you are crunched for time, skip this step but never skip it for company. You can do this in 1-2 days in advance of your meal. 5) If you have the time, let the asparagus soak in cold or icy water. This can be for 5 minutes or 2 days. Whatever time you devote to it, you will be rewarded with crisp and hydrated asparagus!! Now that you have properly prepared your asparagus, you are ready to finish the recipe!! Top with whole grape tomatoes. Drizzle with olive oil, salt and fresh cracked pepper. Toss to coat. Add shaved Parmigiano Reggiano using a peeler. Roast in a 450 degree oven for about 5-7 minutes. Serve immediately.

Did You Know? Reducing your electricity consumption is an easy way to reduce your environmental footprint. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 39 percent of the energy used in America is used to generate electricity. Most of that electricity is generated from fossil fuels like coal, natural gas and oil, and generating those fossil fuels can increase the emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases while contributing to climate change. But electricity can be generated from renewable resources that do not generally contribute to climate change or air pollution. That’s because these renewable resources, which include solar, geothermal and wind technologies, do not burn fuels. If such renewable resources are not accessible to you, then there are additional ways to reduce your electricity consumption. When purchasing new appliances and electronics, purchase energy-efficient products and operate them efficiently. Energyefficient windows can bring more natural light into your home, allowing you to rely more on natural light than electricity to brighten your home. In addition, energy-efficient, properly insulated windows help both your home’s heating and cooling systems to operate more efficiently by reducing the amount of air that escapes through the windows.
