WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA? Social media is an internet-based form of communication. Social media platforms allow users to have conversations, share information, and create web content.

It refers to a computer-based technology that facilitates sharing ideas, thoughts, and information through virtual networks and communities. Social media is internetbased and gives users quick electronic content communication, such as personal information, documents, videos, and photos.

Samuel Morse made the 1st step towards some resemblance of social media when he sent a telegraph from Washington D.C. to Baltimore. Morse's first message read, "What have God wrought?".

MILITARY'S FIRST SOCIAL MEDIA ATTEMPT (1969) ARPAN (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) wanted to connect universities on a photo-internet. It worked great if transmitting two letters was the goal. Unfortunately, the letters "LO" weren't the complete "LOGIN" that they had planned to send over..

LiveJournal was a platform where users could blog to keep friends updated with their lives, a format later used by Facebook for their status.

Friendster, one of the first social media sites, was created and launched by Peter Chin, Jonathan Abrams, and Dave Lee. Within the following year, they rejected 30 million dollars from Google, widely considered one of the biggest blunders of Silicon Valley.

Google created its own email serviceGmail in January. Gmail was branded as Google Mail in the UK due to a trademark dispute, until 2009 when they changed the branding back after the dispute was over.

MySpace became the most popular social network in the US in 2006!

That’s just three years after it was founded. Moreover, our fave Twitter is launched publicly on July 15th.

Vine, a video hosting service specializing in short videos, went public in June. Twitter acquired Vine for 30 million dollars in the October of that year.

FACEBOOK BEGINS (2004)

In February 2004, Facebook was launched by Mark Zuckerberg, along with his Harvard roommates.

This site was initially limited to Harvard students but this membership would be worldwide in the following months and years, rocketing the numbers of users to around 2.2 billion in 14 years.

65 million tweets a day are being sent out on Twitter; that’s around 750 tweets every second.

UK’S INSTA ADS (2014) Instagram brings sponsored ads to target the UK in September following their inclusion on the app in America.

Youtube, a platform on which users can upload and share videos, was made public in February 2005. The first video to hit one million views also came this year, thanks to a Nike advert featuring Ronaldinho.

Facebook is now available in the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand on October 1st.

Snapchat, an image messaging app, was launched in September after being tested as an IOS-only app known as Picaboo in July. One of the founding members is pushed out before Snapchat was released.

Virtual reality, live videos, and 360degree videos reigned all video content on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. There was a crackdown on fake news throughout social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

PHOTO SHARING Common usage of photo sharing is posting pictures in your account that can be seen by your friends or on the internet. An example of these is our well-loved Instagram and Pinterest!

It also allows the user to promote or to show the products of their own businesses.

Just like what small biz marketing is doing now, iskoolmate!

VIDEO SHARING The common usage of video sharing is uploading a video with a certain content like vlogs and allows you to watch different videos that are being upload in that specific platform like youtube

INTERACTIVE MEDIA The common usage of Interactive media is bringing features that are fascinating to the Genz like video games. Also uses social media platforms like TikTok that can make each user to be entertained since they are backed up by the Algorithm. Every For You Page, is curated based on what you like, iskoolmate!

BLOGGING/ COMMUNITY BUILDING The common usage of Blogging is being informed in certain situations or events in politics, pop-culture and etc. This also contains educational topics that reader can consume and people can add or share their own ways of what they think in that certain topic.

EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA PHYSICAL First things first, as human beings, everything that we do can all affect our physical well-being. These are some of the general effects of social media on our physical health!

IT CAN HURT OUR EYESIGHT!

IT CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF CHRONIC PAIN

ave you ever spent time endlessly laughing because of TikTok? Perhaps you are very much invested in keeping up with your favorite vloggers on YouTube?

hecking our social media feeds always require frequent hand use, especially when sending text messages and trying to keep up with your friends in group chats! Because of this, rapidly responding to messages and frequently scrolling might cause joint discomfort and inflammation. We don't want this to happen to you, iskoolmate! 🥺

As scrolling on social media can be too addicting, it can worsen our eyesight!

Furthermore, According to the study of Lee (2017), the more individuals utilized social media, the more somatic symptoms they had and doctor visits. They were also shown to have higher levels of chronic inflammation.

As smartphone screens are smaller than computer screens, we are more likely to squint and strain our eyes when reading texts.

This creates dry eyes and excessive strain. Smartphones generate blue light, which is extremely harmful to our eyes. Looking at our phones in bed (I know we’re all guilty of this, iskoolmates! 🤪 ) is especially dangerous since direct exposure to light may injure our retinas and lead to macular degeneration. (tip!) Try looking away from the screen for 15-20 seconds regularly and focusing on something else to give our eyes a break.

Don’t worry! There are also positive effects of social media on our physical well-being.

IT INFLUENCES US TO IMPROVE OUR HEALTH AND FITNESS! We have all tried this! And for sure, the one thing that influenced us is the people that we see on our social media! For me, having discovered Pamela Reif is one of the best positive effects of social media. She does not only help me be comfortable with my body but also encourages me to get fit at my own pace!

There are also many communities wherein any Gen Z can join to further improve their health and fitness! Some of these can be found on Facebook groups, YouTube Communities, or even downloadable applications!

EDUCATIONAL Social media is a major piece of our everyday life and there’s no point in getting it far from the educational system!

IT HELPS IN THE FORMATION OF SKILLS IN THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY.

It's no secret that if you're new to technology and can't handle it, finding a solid job might be tough. As a result, this usage of social media will assist fresh graduate gen z's and students in developing the appropriate portfolio and interpersonal intelligence while also allowing them to gain practical skills such as excel, utilizing Instagram to promote business, getting inspired by ppt presentation in social media, reading blogs to improve their freewriting skills and so on!

OVER-RELIANCE REDUCES LEARNING! D ue to the broad use of social media, gen z's are increasingly turning to these social media platforms to seek information and knowledge rather than looking in books or watching the news as a primary source. Because it is so simple to obtain information online, our reading, learning, and research abilities are diminishing.

We are also prone to see fake news which makes it hard to see the truth from lies!

FINANCIAL Using social media on a daily basis can have two major effects on your financial well-being.

INCREASE SPENDING CONSUMPTION WHILE DECREASE SAVINGS F irst and foremost, Watching too much Shopee recos (yaSSS, the budol trend 🤩 ) and online shopping has the potential to increase spending while decreasing savings due to a mindset of purchasing and comparing.

Most of the gen z’s nowadays make impulsive purchases based on what they watch and saw on their social media feeds (You’re not excluded from this, iskoolmates!!! 🤪). Also, the majority of social media users, post and share their most recent purchases with their friends. It's necessary to remember that social media portrays a rosy rather than realistic view of a person's life. To want more, you must first believe that you do not have enough or that you are not good enough. Marketing strategies depend on creating insecurities, establishing self-doubt, and fostering problems.

This mindset can have an impact, especially on the finances of gen zs because they may become more focused on showing visible signs of wealth rather than establishing financial stability behind closed doors. Social media can prevent us from recharging our batteries in peace in the gig economy. It can also affect the earning potential because we are expected to be "on" at all times!

Remember that, financial wellness is all about putting you in control, and social media may assist you in doing just that. Simply watching an advertisement for a product might make you unconsciously more interested in purchasing it, even if you don't realize it at the time.

You may opt to design your social media feed such that it is full of health, inspiration, and friendship content rather than consumption. Increasing your self-confidence will make you less vulnerable to doubt-inducing marketing practices. You'll have more freedom to make good choices if you don't make unhealthy comparisons or spend based on envy.

MENTAL

POSITIVELY BOOSTS OUR MENTAL HEALTH O ne of the positive effects of using social media mentally is we get to seek or offer emotional support during tough times.

Social media may also aid in the management of relationships, particularly among individuals who live far apart, therefore breaking down geographical barriers. It can also help in the maintaining of relationships for persons with disabilities, such as the elderly and those with physical infirmities that limit their movement and stop them from leaving the house.

WE ARE PRONE TO HAVE MENTAL ILLNESSES B ut most of the time, social media effects are negative or bad for mental health. One of the negative effects of using social media is anxiety and depression.

To be mentally healthy, Us, humanity needs face-to-face interaction.

Nothing relieves stress and enhances mood faster or more efficiently than making eye contact with someone who cares about you, right iskoolmates? 😄 The more you prioritize social media interaction over in-person interactions, the more likely you are to develop or worsen mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, and we don’t want that!

For me, in order to manage my use of social media, I always always always make sure to take breaks and connect with the physical reality. By spending time with my family, playing with my pets, and reading books, I get to manage my use and it helps me not to get too distracted from these social media! I also manage my social media by checking on my screentime; it helps me see the apps I have used often and the hours I spend daily. With these small steps, I’m sure you can do it too, fellow iskoolmates!

When using social media gets toxic and my mental health can’t manage it any longer, I deactivate my social media accounts for a bit and then reactivate them when I feel better. Always take a break, as Iskoolmate Kim said. Social media can be overwhelming, which might lead to burnout, and we don't want that for you, iskoolmates!
