Korean Wave that began with a popular culture is spreading to the US. It is easy to predict that we need to visualize the shape of Korean Wave in US and would be the most important to both this year and next. To do this, It is very important to understand a unique taste for popular culture which only the United States has and to determine the nature and environment of the market for popular culture in US. On this momentous occasion, it will be a cause in the US-Korean wave ‘the Hanji Festival’ held around major cities in the eastern U.S Philadelphia and New York. Why is Hanji? Hanji, as Korean traditional paper has been kept our life by crafts and has been passed in the history of Korea. In recent years, Haji has been showing excellent function and beautiful works of art as ecofriendly materials, modern design as necessary in practical life, and as cultural heritage in many ways. It shows the spirits of Korean. Hanji will be in the advance guard for spreading Korean culture in the US-Korean wave. “The identity of a thousand years comes for the light of the world” To discover the identity of Korean-American by the spirit of Hanji that had been come over thousand years. The identity of second generation of Korean American is our future. It is the socially and timely necessity in US-Korean Wave era to young Korean American generation the right to find their identity through the view of Korean culture.

Invitation Hanji, the Identity of a Thousand Years The identity of the second generation is the future for Korean-Americans. It is the socially and timely necessity in the US-Korean Wave era for the young Korean-American generation to find its identity. I would like to discover the identity of Korean-Americans by the spirit of Hanji, Korean paper that is over a thousand years old.

Hanji is Korean traditional paper. Sometime, it’s called Dakji because made in Dak Tree (paper mulberry). Hanji has a strength and softness, just like the ethnicity of Koreans who have clean and subtle emotions. Koreans have used Hanji as clothing in order to provide warmth during the cold winter. This paper is also lightweight and absorbs the oil or ink, so people prefer to write or draw pictures on it. I would say that it is just the time to think ‘identity of Korean American’ as immigrants through this exhibition. Artists who invited for the exhibition try to demonstrate a combination of identity as well as the history of Hanji. Korean is referred to as a “Baewiminjok” which means “people who love white clothing”. They love white and purity. The recording of life is culture, but our culture is more than that. We are motivated to think and encouraged to carry the story to the next generation. I see a wild civility from some works. It is like do more bewitch me, than when art is too precise in every part. The artists bring the past to us, not simple images or the senses. They bring pride and history. They are writing the story which the best fiction allowed. I believe that audience will rise to their feet to pay tribute to the outstanding works to give us ‘the meaning of implication’ and ‘trace of history’. Working with Korean traditional paper is a noble task. I am expecting Hanji to serve as an evangelist for our future. Thanks to all of the artists who participated in this exhibition. Greeting Unique and global Fiber, Hanji KCul Fondation is pleased to organize, a Hanji Fashion exhibition for Hanji fashion designer group from Korea. Hanji, as Korean traditional paper has been kept our life by crafts and has been passed in the history of Korea. In last few months, the influence of the wave of Korean culture has now reached the United States. It is easy to see that how visualize the shape of the Korean culture in the United States through ‘Gangnam Style’ of Psy. The culture known in Korea and the culture developed by Korean Americans in the United States are two very distinct ways of life. By identifying their differences, Koreans will have the ability to cultivate a Korean community in the United States that is specifically made to fit the needs of Korean Americans.

Invitation The Korean wave or Korean fever refers to the significant increase in the popularity of culture. However, there are still tasks and responsibilities to improve the standard of Korean culture and diffuse the culture. That also could bring more economic profits to Korea. In order to do that, of course, we have to understand well for many other exclusive cultures first. Also, it is very important to have knowledge of market of pop culture. I am expecting that Hanji festival and exhibition can be one of the great impacts to Korean Wave in the United States.

Hanji has a great value of history along with Korean history. Hanji is the indigenous artistic handicrafts. Once upon a time, people from other countries often asked if the Hanji was made with Silk which it never was. It is made in high-qualities and Hanji have been widely recognized from all over the world. Nowadays, Hanji is being used for many other design products on many things. I wish that Hanji can diffuse our Korean traditional culture to the world. The original will seek Korean’s identities through thousands of year’s history, and through that identities it shall shine in the world and it will become our future. I hope this can help Korean kids who were born or live in the United States or other countries to find their identities better. And, it can help them to have proper knowledge of Korean culture. I invite everyone who loves the Hanji and Korean cultures and is grateful to our Hanji Dress exhibition. Please come and enjoy the outstanding art works of Hanji. Thank you very much.

Greeting I am very pleased to exhibit our culture heritage Hanji which brings a new trend to the world. I am hoping that people from many countries rightly understood Koreans’Identities through Hanji’s traditionalism. And I am also hoping that Hanji’s traditionalism could lead people to think of Korean culture values better. So, Korean artists could bring forth rapid progress in Korean heritage culture. Hanji has beauties of nature that are made from organic and eco-friendly. In fact, Hanji was just one of the material and tool to make a beautiful works of art back in the old days. However, nowadays Hanji is in a class by itself. It has Koreans’hearts and souls with many histories. I can assure you that many original and creative ideas from designers and artists will provide breath taking Arts of Hanji. I hope people can enjoy this exhibition. Invitation Every country has its own traditions and cultures. I believe, due to that, we could continuously evolve and create on every single thing. Therefore, I am always excited about future work of art.

This exhibition concentrates exclusively on the theme of Hanji. Hanji is the name of traditional handmade paper from Korea. Hanji is made from the inner bark of paper Mulberry, a tree native to Korea that grows well on its rocky mountainsides, known in Korean as“dak”. I want to share the beauty of nature colors on Hanji with people who loves Korean cultures and Hanji. Also, I hope that the clothes made from hanji can make a new understanding through this Hanji Exhibitions. The exhibition was organized in collaboration with many artists from the United States, China, and European countries. Artists named“A thousand year old Hanji’s identity shines in the world”for this exhibition. We want to show the world the Hanji’s superiority and aesthetics. Also, I am very pleased that exhibition provides Artists a chance to express themselves through Hanji work of arts. We are hoping that this exhibition can be the origin of the plan for establishing and exploiting Hanji more and more in the future. We will try to make the exhibition as meaningful and significant as much as we can. I am very thankful for Artists who spent a lot of times with their passion for this exhibition. I am also thankful to the foundation for Korean culture in USA and Jeonju International Culture Association. Explanation. For me, the meaning of life is to make others happy with talents, and I am doing it through Goethe, the German poet. On reading his splendid words, my world whirls into a delight. On hearing his translucent sounds, my world transfers into a vision. On touching his emotional colours, my world moves into a nostalgia. His words / sounds / colours are part of my identity. With him at Gothic cathedrals where he found his identity, I am ready to homage God. Academic Ability & Career. ㆍAfter her journalism study at Ewha Womans University in S. Korea, Dr. Hee Sook Lee-Niinioja became the Asian pioneer in Scandinavia (1975), to study art / design at the Norwegian National College of Art and Design. She continued another MA in visual communication at Syracuse (USA), while her PhD was in architecture at Oxford Brookes (UK). As artist / designer / journalist / scholar, she held numerous exhibitions, ‘Goethe in Me’ , as well as lectures and humanitarian work across the globe. She is specialized on “Texts-images”and“comparison between Hindu-Buddhist / Christian / Islamic architecture”, hoping to enhance dialogues through heritages. She devotes herself to research / artwork / journalism, and activities of Intangible Heritage (ICOMOS).
