Music can change the way we feel. It can make us feel lively, sad, excited or calm; and this is no different for children! In the Early Years, we need to offer a good selection of musical instruments, well set out, to allow children freedom of choice, easy access for self-selection and to allow for progression of skills. By encouraging children’s musical self-expression (as you would their artwork) you will build their confidence too! Music can be used to explore sounds, develop listening skills and to start to learn about timing, rhythm and rhyme. Tuning into sounds lays a vital foundation for children’s future success in literacy, forming the bedrock of their phonemic and phonological awareness pre-phonics.
