As a student, mother and school manager, she has seen it grow and develop from the beginning, which occurred in a house in the el Prado neighborhood.

eatri, as we affectionately call her, those of us who have had the honor of working alongside her, guiding the destiny of Karl C. Parrish School. She has informed us of her decision to retire as President of KCP’s Board of Trustees. With absolute certainty we can assure that we will never find a person with such an extensive and deep knowledge of our school in the community; knowledge acquired throughout her long association, absolute dedication and tradition.

For this reason it is interesting and important to briefly highlight some history. Don Ignacio Blanco, her father (RIP), was co-founder of our school, her two sisters, Margarita and Cecilia (RIP), her three children and herself passed through the KCP classrooms and graduated here.

For this reason, she has always been linked to the school since its foundation, actively observing and

Beatriz has faithfully fulfilled and followed her father’s legacy. Her career on the school’s Board has been extensive and, over the years, she has climbed all the steps until she occupied the presidency of the Board of Trustees, the highest hierarchy in our institution, and an unmatched and incomparable achievement that no other school manager has ever accomplished.

She started as a “room mother” for several years, later she participated as a member of the “PTA”, and years later she was appointed member of the Board of Directors, occupying the presidency. Finally, after her children’s graduation, she became a member of the Board of Trustees and was later elected president.

During her time as president on both boards, Beatri has led the ship through calm and sometimes turbulent waters, but always with her recognized leadership, with great skill in managing personal relationships. Excellent decisionmaking criteria, honesty, always focused on the vision and mission, and maintaining a simple and low profile. Upon retirement, these personal and administrative qualities

Her outstanding devotion and dedication to community service can be appreciated and verified in the foundation, development, and longterm maintenance of the little school in El Bosque. She has also been this school’s main supporter, which has facilitated and benefited the education of many underprivileged children in the city. This institution also became her second adoptive son.

As we can appreciate, her contribution to the development, vision and administration of the school has been persistent and successful. But she has decided to step aside and make a change in her activities. Every change is the beginning of a day and at the same time the end of that day. It is impossible not to acknowledge her permanent contribution and dedication to all the activities that have been necessary to achieve the current state of KCP and what our institution represents today in the city and in our country.

Thank you a thousand times Beatri, thank you for all your effort for so many years and for working for the development and improvement of our school. We wish you the best of the best, that you enjoy your grandchildren in the company of Rodrigo, your husband, and children. At school and in our hearts there will always be a space reserved exclusively for you. We will remember you at all times with great affection. A thousand congratulations and blessings.

eatri, como cariñosamente le llamamos los que hemos tenido el honor de trabajar a su lado guiando el destino del Colegio Karl C. Parrish. Ella nos ha comunicado su decisión de retirarse como presidente de la Junta Patronal.

Pero con absoluta certeza podemos asegurar, que no encontraremos una persona con un conocimiento tan extenso y profundo del colegio en la comunidad. Conocimiento adquirido a través de su larga vinculación, entrega absoluta y tradición.

Por este motivo es interesante e importante resaltar brevemente algo de historia. Don Ignacio Blanco, su padre (qepd), fue cofundador del colegio, sus dos hermanas, Margarita y Cecilia (qepd), sus tres hijos y ella pasaron por las aulas del colegio y se graduaron en él. Por este motivo ella siempre ha estado vinculada al colegio desde su fundación, observando y participando activamente en su evolución. Tanto como alumna, madre y directivo del colegio, lo ha visto crecer y desarrollarse desde el inicio, el cual ocurrió en una casa del barrio El Prado hasta su estado actual.

Beatriz ha cumplido y seguido fielmente el legado de su padre. Su carrera en la directiva del colegio ha sido extensa y a través de años ha escalado todos los peldaños hasta llegar a ocupar la Presidencia de la Junta Patronal, máximo estamento jerárquico de nuestra institución.

Hecho inigualable e incomparable con cualquier otro desempeño de directivo alguno.

Durante su gestión como presidente tanto en la Junta Directiva como en la Junta Patronal, Beatri capitaneó el barco a través de aguas tranquilas y algunas veces turbulentas, pero siempre con su reconocido liderazgo, con gran habilidad en el manejo de las relaciones personales. Excelente criterio en la toma de decisiones, honestidad, enfocada siempre en la visión y misión y manteniendo un perfil sencillo y poco notorio. A su retiro, estas cualidades personales y administrativas le han permitido dejar al colegio anclado en puerto seguro, como lo haría un almirante de alto rango. Podríamos decir, que ella adoptó nuestra institución como su principal hijo adoptivo.

Su sobresaliente devoción y dedicación al servicio de la comunidad, se puede apreciar y comprobar en la fundación, desarrollo, y mantenimiento por largos años de la escuelita del Bosque. Ella ha sido el principal soporte y apoyo de esta obra, que ha facilitado y beneficiando la educación de muchos niños y jóvenes

necesitados de la ciudad. Esta institución igualmente se constituyó en su segundo hijo adoptivo.

Como podemos apreciar, su contribución al desarrollo, visión y administración del colegio ha sido perseverante y exitosa. Pero ella ha decido dar un paso al costado y realizar un cambio de actividades.

Todo cambio es el comienzo de un día y al mismo tiempo el final de este. Es imposible no reconocerle su permanente contribución y dedicación a todas las actividades necesarias para alcanzar el estado actual y lo que representa nuestra institución educativa en la ciudad y en el país.

Gracias mil Beatri, gracias por todo ese esfuerzo y empeño durante tantos años en ayudar al desarrollo y mejoramiento del colegio. Te deseamos lo mejor de lo mejor, que disfrutes muy merecidamente a tus nietos en compañía de Rodrigo, tu esposo, e hijos. En el colegio y en nuestros corazones siempre existirá un espacio reservado exclusivamente para ti. Te recordaremos en todo momento con gran cariño. Mil felicidades y bendiciones.

Reflection!

I

t is the key to growth and improvement and an essential part of learning. First and foremost, KCP is a learning institution so, as you can imagine, reflection is also an integral part of the processes our students, teachers and staff engage in throughout the year. This year was like no other before it and the reflection we have engaged in, personally and professionally, institutionally and individually, has only increased.

This year went from an exciting year with many new initiatives to the year of COVID-19 yet we never lost sight of where we started from. We also started positive and united with incredible parent support that only got stronger when we were forced to go to distance learning. Our values as a community were consistently reinforced. It is our values (development of the intellect as well as social and moral values, developing responsible confident citizens and committing to a just society) that should always drive what we do and I have been so encouraged by what I have experienced at KCP, a caring, multicultural community that is focused on doing what is best for our students.

My commitment, from the beginning of the year, was to build capacity and empower our students, teachers and community members in the areas of leadership, learning, independence and ethical decision-Making! In short: To build “a positive school culture through collaboration and capacity-building!�

Developing a Growth Mindset was the first step to meeting our goals and seeing challenges as opportunities for learning.

That happened, thanks to the openness and solidarity of our community. The development of strong, positive, relationships was the key to our success and when you add transparent, effective communication, collaboration and effective long-term planning, this was a winning recipe and will continue to sustain the school in the coming years.

Priorities are essential and the coming year still has much uncertainty but we know that by prioritizing the well-being of our community members and remaining committed to our values we will overcome any challenge!

Una Reflexión!

E

ste año pasó de ser un año emocionante con muchas iniciativas nuevas a ser el año del COVID-19, sin embargo, nunca perdimos de vista desde dónde comenzamos. También comenzamos de manera positiva y unida con un increíble apoyo de los padres que sólo se fortaleció cuando nos vimos obligados a trasladarnos a la educación a distancia. Nuestros valores como comunidad fueron constantemente reforzados. Son nuestros valores (el desarrollo del intelecto, así como los valores sociales y morales, el desarrollo de ciudadanos responsables y seguros y el compromiso con una sociedad justa) lo que siempre debe impulsar lo que hacemos y los que me han animado tanto y que he experimentado en KCP; una comunidad multicultural que se preocupa por los demás y que se enfoca en hacer lo mejor para nuestros estudiantes. ¡Mi compromiso, desde el comienzo del año, fue desarrollar capacidades y empoderar a nuestros estudiantes, profesores y miembros de la comunidad en las áreas de liderazgo, aprendizaje, independencia

y toma de decisiones éticas! En resumen: ¡Construir “una cultura escolar positiva a través de la colaboración y el desarrollo de capacidades!”

Desarrollar una mentalidad de crecimiento fue el primer paso para alcanzar nuestras metas y ver los desafíos como oportunidades de aprendizaje.

Eso sucedió, gracias a la apertura y solidaridad de nuestra comunidad. El desarrollo de relaciones sólidas y positivas fue la clave de nuestro éxito y cuando se agrega comunicación transparente, efectiva, colaboración y planificación efectiva a largo plazo, esta es una receta ganadora, que continuará manteniendo al colegio en el futuro.

Las prioridades son esenciales y el próximo año escolar llega aun con mucha incertidumbre, ¡pero sabemos que al priorizar el bienestar de los miembros de nuestra comunidad y al mantenernos comprometidos con nuestros valores, superaremos cualquier desafío!

Finalmente, ¡GRACIAS! Gracias por ser una comunidad tan maravillosa y acogedora. Siempre atesoraré el tiempo que he vivido en KCP. ¡Manténgase a salvo, sigan siendo KCP! #

We´ll never forget this particular time of our history and its courageous generation and we hope they will never forget their KCP school library!

D

uring the 2019-2020 academic year, the Burton B. Fox Library peppered the school with its traditional celebrations of reading, researching and creating. The Roald Dahl Month, the Under the Sea Scholastic Book Fair, the Makerspace with the design and planning of an intelligent thermos -affectionately labeled Aura, the Hydro-Eco-Bot-, “I Love My Library” month and Dr. Seuss Week, all made the library overflow with enthusiasm from both teachers and students.

Preschool parents and students celebrated their first love of reading and mathematics with Family Reading Night and our first-ever “Numeracy in Literacy” event.

We also launched the “Ctrl Z...

Not Always an Option” campaign, which reached Secondary students by means of thought-provoking talks, videos, and activities about digital literacy and citizenship.

But the most significant

achievements of the year lie in the innovative practices undertaken for distance learning. When distance learning began, our first concern was to make ebooks available to the KCP community. Through messages and videos, we reminded and prodded parents and students alike to look into our collection of ebooks and online platforms such as Destiny Discover, Tumblebooks, Epic and the Internet Archive.

Our dedicated readers helped us find books that they were “dying to read” and we even purchased them at times to complement our collection. Our little ones could not go without their library storytime so we recorded read-alouds every week for them on our Burton B. Fox Library YouTube account.

The Burton B. Fox Library also grew more as a relevant “Information and Media Center”. Throughout distance learning we reached out and helped teachers by building pathfinders with resources from

academic databases and made ourselves available to help them tackle their technology challenges.

And we began to produce and edit library and school videos, our most memorably being the “Among Books and Words Fest” video that brought together teachers and students with read-alouds from their favorite books and the freespirited KCP production of the “The Gingerbread Girl” for our Read-a-thon winners.

We are more than primed to go back to our beautiful KCP campus, and we are also ready to assume the challenge of distance learning for as long as it takes. But, more than anything, we have asserted the valuable truth that Burton B. Fox Library transcends the lovely building that houses our books. We´ll never forget this particular time of our history and its courageous generation and we hope they will never forget their KCP school library! #

urante el año escolar 2019-2020, la Biblioteca Burton B. Fox tuvo sus celebraciones tradicionales de lectura, investigación y creación. El mes de Roald Dahl, la Feria del Libro Scholastic “Bajo el mar”, el Makerspace - que diseñó y la planificó un termo inteligente etiquetado cariñosamente Aura, el Hydro-Eco-Bot-, el mes de “Amo a Mi Biblioteca” y la semana de Dr. Seuss hicieron que los profesores y los estudiantes sintieran mucho entusiasmo por su biblioteca.

Los padres y estudiantes de Preescolar celebraron su amor por la lectura y las matemáticas con la muy esperada “Noche de lectura en familia” y “Las matemáticas en los libros”, nuestro primer evento para los chiquitos de PK y Kinder.

Lanzamos la campaña “Ctrl Z ...no siempre es una opción”, que involucró a los estudiantes de secundaria a través de charlas, vídeos y actividades sobre su etiqueta y costumbres digitales.

Pero los logros más significativos del año radican en las prácticas innovadoras que tuvimos que emprender para el aprendizaje a distancia. Cuando comenzó el aprendizaje a distancia, nuestra primera preocupación era poner los libros en las manos de los estudiantes para que no menguara el amor por la lectura. Esto se hizo brindando

libros electrónicos a disposición de la comunidad de KCP. Por medio de mensajes y vídeos, recordamos y animamos a padres y estudiantes por igual a que accedieran a nuestra colección de libros electrónicos y plataformas en línea como Destiny Discover, Tumblebooks, Epic e Internet Archive. Inclusive cuando nuestros lectores dedicados no encontraron algunos libros que querían leer con

Comenzamos a producir y editar vídeos de la biblioteca y el Colegio, siendo nuestros vídeos más memorables el vídeo “Entre libros y palabras” que reunió a profesores y estudiantes en lecturas de sus libros favoritos y la producción original de KCP “The Gingerbread Girl” para nuestros ganadores de Read-a-thon.

Sin duda será estupendo volver a nuestro hermoso KCP campus pero estamos más listos que nunca para asumir el desafío del aprendizaje a distancia todo el tiempo que sea necesario. Pero, más que nada, hemos afirmado la valiosa verdad de que la Biblioteca Burton B. Challenges and Obstacles Lead to Innovations in Blended Learning in the Elementary and Pre-school

S

ince the beginning of this academic year, our director, Mr. Levno, has frequently referred to the groundbreaking work of Carol Dweck1 and George Couros2 in identifying mindset shifts and their relationship to educational innovation.

As Mr. Levno continually reinforced, the growth mindset sees challenges embraced as catalysts for learning with obstacles overcome through perseverance; and the innovator’s mindset sees challenges as opportunities for growth, and views obstacles with possibility.

Since mid-March, the teachers and students in the Elementary and Pre-school have exhibited the traits of both of these mindsets in adapting their instructional delivery with new and innovative ways of presenting, and engaging with, educational experiences. These adaptations have propelled forward our Blended Learning strategies with momentum that will continue as we move back to campus and to classroom learning.

Through embracing the challenges and obstacles presented during Distance Learning, we have seen lasting and impactful growth and innovation in how we interface with technology in a learning environment. In forming partnerships with many of the industry’s leading blended learning platforms, we have built upon our already established strategies to further enhance our 21st century education model to prepare our students to be capable of meeting and overcoming challenges in a diverse and globalized world.

What is the future we want?

K

arl C. Parrish has a long history of excellence, and its graduates are among the most influential and prominent members of local and international governments and businesses. Reflecting upon KCP’s mission: To prepare students to be ethical leaders who are capable of meeting global challenges and addressing the continuous changes and demands influencing their country, how does KCP continue to live up to this?

It seems to me that in this new era of global uncertainty, we need to adapt and innovate to survive. The current global health crisis will continue to define our times for the foreseeable future. Thus, how we as a school face this future together will determine what we will accomplish as individuals for years to come. It is my personal and professional conviction that our practices and procedures must continue to evolve in order to ensure agility. How do we do that?

While certainly not a remedy, increasing student agency could be one of the first steps we take together. At the start of the 2019 - 2020 academic year, the KCP Secondary teachers identified student agency as one of the most critical areas of focus for the year.

Policies and procedures have been refined and implemented through this lens, and have included: 1. Revamping the senior project to better embrace inquiry, choice, and realworld applications.

2. Providing enrichment choice classes for all secondary students through the X-block structure.

3. Modeling co-agency by increasing teacher agency through leadership opportunities as grade-level leads and department leads.

4. Including students during parent-teacher conferences.

5. Encouraging and facilitating curriculum that allows for more individualized learning paths through the Director of Teaching and Learning’s support.

6. Learning to adapt quickly to the new demands of distance and online learning.

Student agency is best achieved through a balanced collaboration between students, parents, communities, and schools. It is a process of deliberately creating responsible leaders and change agents by supporting students’ intellectual and emotional needs. As young people face daily challenges while growing up, learning how to engage in reflection, decision-making, and future planning early in their lives makes for all the difference. To facilitate agency is to support the

students with globally relevant tools. Research shows that a ‘competencies framework’ helps young people to adapt, understand, empathize, collaborate, and find opportunities to design their futures.

International organizations, including the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), recognize that a better future starts by including young people in designing their learning. One way to do this is to ask students to explain their own goals.

Participation in the process of critical decision-making with peers and adults leads to deeper learning and understanding. For example, the OECD has begun their new project “well being 2030” by asking students the simple question: What is the future you want? A powerful question that both forces people to face their fears and their dreams and invites them to be sincere. It also helps students to find their voice and formulate what is essential.

For instance, many of our students have already shown that they are politically aware. They recognize issues, including local and global inequality, climate crisis, and access to education and health care as fundamental challenges of our times. Now, how can we help our students to identify the critical factors before supporting them to move forward with achievable action plans?

What is the future we want for our students now?

Earlier, I have mentioned the importance of including students in the learning process. It is our responsibility to provide our students with choices and opportunities to find their voice and to advocate for their unique learning needs. With that in mind, I would like to turn the tables on us, the adults. What do we want for our students to know and to be able to do?

We need only to look to Greta Thunberg, the young environmental activist from Sweden, in order to find an example of how No One is Too Small to Make a Difference, (2018) Thunberg’s rise to the public stage can be also partially credited to where she comes from and how her country has both modeled and supported personal agency.

This livability experience has provided Thunberg with daily experiences from which to feel empowered to work towards positive change. For instance, Park and Huang (2010) found evidence of the importance of sustained experiences that affect both our brain structures and function.

The authors identified cultural exposure as evidence for changes in human neural structure and function based on experiences that lead to behavioral changes.

This research supports my earlier observation that to shape desirable behaviors requires a commitment to an agreed-upon set of priorities as well as academic and social experiences to support these agreements.

Commitment to citizens’ wellbeing seems to be a fundamental element in providing the structure that supports agency. This is a step that Colombia has publicly taken as well: on April 28, 2020,

the OECD invited Colombia to join the organization and become its 37th full member country. The process took more than 10 years.

With the government’s signatory commitment to citizens’ health and well-being, all citizens of Colombia, including the KCP community, stand to benefit immensely.

Where to next?

So, what is the future we want?

And, What is the future we want for our students now? The learning from this reflection suggests that providing students with thinking space to critically self-evaluate matters. It also helps to support them in finding their voice to express what they want from the future for themselves.

In building on the school’s traditions and the work our Secondary faculty did with their students this year pertaining to their agency, I will continue to advocate for humility but expect rigor and agility in our academic work and community life. I believe the key to ensuring the expected behaviors is by providing students with a sustained experience where they see and live those behaviors.

Simply put, we all learn by observation, which means that our students behave the way they see others behave around them every

day. There is no way around it, and no simple way out. Serving as an educator, parent, or community leader is hard work.

I am not suggesting that we need to treat KCP as the next applicant to OECD. Instead, we can take a lesson from the government’s efforts, and the country’s work as a whole, and the accomplishments of the past decade. We can use the narrative to motivate ourselves to do better. We could also use the story to support each other as we walk forward together.

I fully admit that I cannot predict the resolution of our current crisis. And yet, I remain hopeful that the nature of this crisis will teach us a valuable lesson. We can learn to prepare for the future by critical evaluation of our past. We can also learn to take the time to problem-solve issues before they escalate. ¿Cuál es el futuro que queremos?

arl C. Parrish tiene una larga historia de excelencia, y sus graduados se encuentran entre los miembros más influyentes y destacados de gobiernos y empresas locales e internacionales.

Al hacer una reflexión sobre la misión de KCP, “Preparar a los estudiantes para ser líderes éticos que sean capaces de enfrentar desafíos globales y abordar los continuos cambios y demandas que influyen en su país,” ¿Cómo logra KCP mantener el cumplimiento de su misión?

En esta nueva era de incertidumbre global, necesitamos adaptarnos e innovar para sobrevivir. La actual crisis de salud mundial continuará definiendo nuestro tiempo en el futuro previsible. Por lo tanto, la forma en que nosotros como institución educativa enfrentamos este futuro juntos, determinará lo que lograremos como individuos en los próximos años. Es mi convicción personal y profesional que nuestras prácticas y procedimientos deben seguir evolucionando para garantizar la agilidad. ¿Cómo hacemos eso?

Aunque ciertamente no es una solución, aumentar el empoderamiento estudiantil

podría ser uno de los primeros pasos para tomar juntos. Al inicio del año académico 2019 - 2020, los profesores de Secundaria de KCP identificaron el aprendizaje personalizado como una de las áreas más críticas de enfoque para el año.

Las políticas y procedimientos se han refinado e implementado con este lente, y han incluido: 1. Renovar el proyecto de los alumnos de doceavo para abarcar mejor la investigación, la elección y las aplicaciones del mundo real.

2. Proporcionar clases de elección de enriquecimiento para todos los estudiantes de Secundaria a través de la estructura X-block.

3. Modelar la co-gestión aumentando la participación de profesores a través de oportunidades de liderazgo en niveles de grado y por departamento.

4. Que los estudiantes asistan a las conferencias de padres y profesores.

El empoderamiento estudiantil se logra mejor a través de una colaboración equilibrada entre estudiantes, padres, comunidades y colegios. Es un proceso de creación deliberada de líderes responsables y agentes de cambio al apoyar las necesidades intelectuales y emocionales de los estudiantes. A medida que los jóvenes se enfrentan a desafíos diarios mientras crecen, aprender a participar en la reflexión, la toma de decisiones y la planificación futura en una etapa temprana de sus vidas, marca la diferencia. Facilitar el empoderamiento es apoyar a los estudiantes con herramientas relevantes a nivel mundial. La investigación muestra que un “marco de competencias” ayuda a los jóvenes a adaptarse, comprender, empatizar, colaborar y encontrar oportunidades para diseñar su futuro.

Por ejemplo, muchos de nuestros estudiantes ya han demostrado que son políticamente conscientes.

Reconocen problemas, como la desigualdad local y global, la crisis climática y el acceso a la educación y la atención médica como desafíos fundamentales de nuestros tiempos. Ahora, ¿cómo podemos ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a identificar los factores críticos antes de ayudarlos a avanzar con planes de acción alcanzables?

¿Cuál es el futuro que queremos para nuestros estudiantes ahora?

Anteriormente, mencioné la importancia de incluir proactivamente a los estudiantes en su proceso de aprendizaje.

Es nuestra responsabilidad proporcionar a nuestros alumnos opciones y oportunidades para encontrar su voz y abogar por sus necesidades únicas de aprendizaje.

Con eso en mente, quisiera que ahora los adultos nos preguntemos qué queremos que nuestros alumnos sepan y puedan hacer.

Sólo necesitamos mirar a Greta Thunberg, la joven activista ambiental de Suecia, para encontrar un ejemplo de cómo ‘Nadie es demasiado pequeño para marcar la diferencia’, (titulado en español Cambiemos el Mundo). El ascenso de Thunberg a la escena pública también puede atribuirse parcialmente a de dónde ella viene y cómo su país ha modelado y apoyado el empoderamiento

personal.

Esta experiencia de habitabilidad le ha proporcionado a Thunberg vivencias diarias para sentirse empoderada para trabajar hacia un cambio positivo. Por ejemplo, Park y Huang (2010) encontraron evidencia de la importancia de las experiencias sostenidas que afectan tanto nuestras estructuras cerebrales como nuestra función.

Los autores identificaron la exposición cultural como evidencia de cambios en la estructura y función neuronal humana, basadas en experiencias que conducen a cambios de comportamiento.

Esta investigación respalda mi observación anterior: dar forma a los comportamientos deseables requiere un compromiso con un conjunto acordado de prioridades, así como experiencias académicas y sociales para apoyar estos acuerdos.

El compromiso con el bienestar de los ciudadanos parece ser un elemento fundamental para proporcionar la estructura que respalda el empoderamiento.

Este es un paso que Colombia también ha dado públicamente: el 28 de abril de 2020, la OCDE invitó a Colombia a unirse a la

organización y convertirse en el país miembro 37 de pleno derecho.

El proceso llevó más de 10 años.

Con el compromiso del gobierno con la salud y el bienestar de los ciudadanos, todos los colombianos, incluida la comunidad KCP, se beneficiarán inmensamente.

¿Hacia dónde seguimos ahora?

Entonces, ¿Cuál es el futuro que queremos? Y, ¿Cuál es el futuro que queremos para nuestros estudiantes? El aprendizaje de esta reflexión sugiere que proporcionar a los estudiantes un espacio de pensamiento para autoevaluarse críticamente importa. También les ayuda a encontrar su voz para expresar lo que quieren para sí mismos en el futuro.

En la construcción de las tradiciones del colegio y teniendo en cuenta el trabajo que nuestro profesorado de secundaria hizo con sus estudiantes este año en relación a su empoderamiento, continuaré abogando por la humildad, pero espero rigor y agilidad en nuestro trabajo académico y vida comunitaria.

Creo que la clave para garantizar

los comportamientos esperados es proporcionar a los estudiantes una experiencia sostenida donde vean y vivan esos comportamientos. En pocas palabras, todos aprendemos por observación, lo que significa que nuestros estudiantes imitan el comportamiento diario de los de su alrededor. No hay forma de evitarlo, y no hay una salida simple. Servir como educador, padre o líder comunitario es un trabajo duro.

No sugiero que debamos tratar a KCP como el próximo postulante a ser miembro de la OCDE. En cambio, podemos sacar una lección de los esfuerzos del gobierno, del trabajo del país en su conjunto y de los logros de la última década.

Podemos usar la narrativa para motivarnos a mejorar. También podríamos usar la historia para apoyarnos mutuamente mientras avanzamos juntos.

Admito plenamente que no puedo predecir la resolución de nuestra crisis actual, sin embargo sigo esperando que la naturaleza de esta crisis nos enseñe una valiosa lección.

Podemos aprender a prepararnos para el futuro mediante una evaluación crítica de nuestro pasado. También podemos aprender a tomar el tiempo para resolver problemas antes de que se intensifiquen.

Es el ejercicio diario deliberado de diseñar los entornos de aprendizaje lo que nos puede ayudar a facilitar el empoderamiento conjunto entre todos los miembros de la comunidad de KCP. # Kristine Jerabek Secondary Principal

During our Distance Learning program, the counselors´ department has been providing emotional and academic support to all Secondary students and staff using the available technological tools.

Durante el aprendizaje a distancia el Departamento de Consejería ha brindado apoyo académico y emocional a los estudiantes y profesores por medio de video llamadas y correos.

During this academic year Middle and High School students and parents participated in a conference with Dr. Richard Mulett about the emotional and physical consequences regarding the use of E Cigarettes.

Dr. Liz Andre came to KCP for a workshop with 8th and 9th-grade girls about intuition in relationships.

In March, the Middle School Counselor held a conference with each grade level to talk about social-emotional issues and adolescence.

The High School Counselor and Mr. Jair Medina had a conference with our Senior students and parents to talk about their preparation for the Saber 11 test and the intensive ICFES course that the school provides.

In February, our Parent Council organized a workshop with Dr. Maria Lourdes Davila, who talked to parents about Kids and Adolescents’ Self-Esteem.

During our Distance Learning program, the counselors´ department has been providing emotional and academic support to all Secondary students and staff using the available technological tools.

Through the Secondary office, counselors have offered support for parents, providing resources and videos for them to see during the quarantine time.

At the end of the year, counselors do an orientation for parents and students of 8th grade and 5th grade to help them in their transition process for the next academic year. These orientations were done virtually during our distance learning program.

Durante este año académico los estudiantes y padres de Middle y High School participaron de las conferencias dictadas por el Dr. Richard Mullet acerca de las consecuencias emocionales y físicas por el uso de los cigarrillos electrónicos.

La Dra. Liz Andre realizó unos talleres con las estudiantes de 8 y 9 grado acerca del manejo de la intuición en las relaciones.

La Consejera de Middle School se reunió con los padres de cada nivel para hablar sobre el aspecto socioemocional en la adolescencia.

La Consejera de High School, junto con el profesor de Química Mr. Jair Medina, tuvieron una charla con los padres de los Seniors para hablar sobre la preparación para la prueba Saber 11 y el curso intensivo para el ICFES. El Consejo de Padres organizó en el mes de febrero una charla para los padres con la Dra. María Lourdes Dávila, quien habló sobre la Autoestima en el niño y el adolescente.

Durante el aprendizaje a distancia el Departamento de Consejería ha estado dando apoyo en el área académica y emocional a los estudiantes y profesores por medio de vídeo llamadas y correos.

Por medio del Boletín de Apoyo de la Oficina de Secundaria, las consejeras brindaron herramientas, artículos, apoyo y recomendaciones para los padres durante la cuarentena.

Para finales de año escolar las consejeras hicieron una orientación para los padres y alumnos de 5 y 8 grado para ayudarlos en la transición al nuevo año escolar. Estas orientaciones para su ingreso a Middle School y High School se hicieron este año de manera virtual.

El Departamento de Consejería provee artículos y recomendaciones para la sección Counselor’s Corner del KCP Wellness, boletín interno que se publica todos los viernes para el cuidado y el bienestar de la comunidad.#

he school year ends under a situation of extreme crisis with Covid-19, and, as the whole community knows, confronting the challenges of moving very quickly and suddenly to a distance learning model with all its implications. ORC, as an integral part of KCP’s life, has had to adapt as well keeping in mind the welfare of our children and families. We’re proud to say that we’ve risen to the challenge and have many heartwarming success stories. We end the 2019 - 2020 school year with services from Preschool to Grade 12 and supporting closely not only our students but their parents.

Although the new school year’s model may change, what doesn’t change is our commitment to the School and our students. We are planning for the next school year based on different possibilities and our plans always take into account both a back to school scenario and a distance learning situation. #

El año escolar termina dentro de una situación de crisis extrema con el Covid-19 y, tal como toda nuestra comunidad escolar conoce, enfrentando los retos de trasladarnos de manera veloz e inesperada hacia un modelo de aprendizaje a distancia con todas sus implicaciones. ORC, como parte integral de la vida de KCP, también se ha tenido que adaptar teniendo siempre presente el bienestar de nuestros alumnos y sus familias. Nos enorgullece decir que hemos asumido el reto y tenemos muchas historias de éxito que nos alegran el corazón. Terminamos este año escolar 2019 -2020 con servicios de Preescolar a Grado 12 y apoyando de manera cercana no sólo a nuestros alumnos sino también a sus padres.

A pesar de que el modelo de escolaridad del nuevo año escolar pueda variar, lo que no varía es nuestro compromiso con el Colegio y nuestros estudiantes. COLLEGE AND CAREER You have successfully completed your school years. Class 2020 you have shown to be a strong group that has always complemented each other, with your different talents and interests. You can easily tell this from the diverse areas of knowledge you have chosen for your higher education, such as Law, Business, Marketing, Medicine, Engineerings, Design, Finances, Psychology, Environmental studies, and music, among others.

The Seniors 2020, have selected universities around the world. The Countries of preference are: Colombia, U.S.A, Spain, Belgium, and Germany, and the scholarship grants have totaled 1.4

million dollars.

We also want to recognize Carolina Carbó, who obtained a national 50% scholarship at Universidad del Rosario.

The Seniors 2020 left us a great example to follow. For this reason, with the next KCP generations, we will continue to work on their own great path to success.

Success, the origin of this word doesn’t show an ending point, it rather indicates a starting point to something better. On the contrary, most of the time we have a preconcept or prejudice of the type of person who can be cataloged as successful, and we keep longing for those things that we should have but don’t, and what we should do but we don’t do. It is easy to get stuck in what is “Normal” or in what is expected of you, but today our “regular basis” has given a turn and demonstrated that everything can change, and it is up to each one of you to find the meaning you want to give to success. This process resembles the national and international college application.

In college applications as in life, we should try to understand what the word success stands for in our lives.

To delimitate the goal or purpose we will like to follow through life. Even though only few seem to have clarity

about what they expect of the future, I know all of you had a dream or a glimpse of who you will like to be in the future. If you do not know yet, you can start with small things, like understanding what values you would like to pursue and what skills you would like to focus in.

For these and many more reasons, I would like to invite you to be more introspective, to remind yourselves about your dreams, and to look into your strengths, not only your weaknesses, to overcome. To explore your abilities, and to understand what success means for you. We all have a different role in the society we grew up in, what is yours? My advice: Do not expect society to assign you a role, but start finding your own if you do not know it yet.

Our “normal” is still combined with academic accomplishment because it is the only way to prove we are capable to fulfill our obligations, to be able to address academic challenges, and foremost we are applying to academic institutions, it is clear that grades will have a certain importance but is not the only thing we have to focus on.

After all, the word success is very wide and is there to be filled with your own expectations. We are not all supposed to do the same things, and perhaps that is why you have not been motivated by the already established but, start asking yourself, what do I want for me? This is the main question you will have to answer in your application and/or interviews. It will be best if you can show you have constantly tried to discover yourself, that you are capable of pursuing your interests, to understand and comprehend yourself. Spend some time developing your interests, and start doing that thing you have always wanted. Maybe today you still don't know what you want, but it is a good moment to start looking inside you. Do not let a situation, as the one we are living in, limit or build a barrier in your exploration of your personal success. #

Felicitaciones!

Han completado exitosamente su etapa escolar. Son una clase que ha demostrado complementarse entre sí, con sus diferentes intereses y talentos. Lo muestran con las diversas áreas que han elegido para su educación superior, tales como: Derecho, Administración de Empresas. Marketing, Medicina, Ingenierías, Diseño, Finanzas, Psicología, estudios ambientales, y música, entre otros.

Los Seniors 2020 han escogido Estudiar en diferentes partes del mundo. Su lugares de preferencia han sido: Colombia, Estados Unidos, España, Bélgica y Alemania, y se les otorgaron un total de 1.4 millones de dólares en becas.

Adicionalmente, queremos hacer un reconocimiento a Carolina Carbó quien obtuvo una beca del 50% en la Universidad del Rosario.

Los Seniors 2020 han dejado un gran camino que recorrer y un ejemplo a seguir. Por eso, con las próximas generaciones KCP, seguiremos trabajando y abriendo nuevos caminos.

El éxito, proveniente del latín exitus, no indica un punto de llegada sino un punto de partida para algo mejor. Contrariamente, en muchas ocasiones tenemos un preconcepto o prejuicio de que tipo de persona puede ser catalogado

de exitoso y, muchas veces, nos vemos adoleciendo por aquellas cosas que se deberían tener y no se tienen, o hacer y no sé hacen.

Es muy fácil acostumbrarnos a lo “normal” o a lo esperado, pero hoy, nuestra “normalidad” ha dado un giro y nos demuestra que todo puede cambiar y que depende de cada uno de nosotros el significado que le queramos dar al éxito.

Creo que es el mismo proceso para aplicar a las Universidades Internacionales o Nacionales.

En la aplicaciones como en la vida, debemos tener claro qué es el éxito para nosotros. Cuál es el objetivo o propósito que queremos cumplir.

Aunque sólo algunos parecen tener

Dedícale tiempo a tus intereses, comienza a hacer eso que siempre has postergado. Puede que hoy no sepas qué quieres, pero es un buen momento para empezar a buscarlo en ti. En este fin de año escolar, los invito a ser un poco más retrospectivos, recordar ese sueño y a buscar no en lo que son malos, sino en lo que sí son buenos. En explorar sus diferentes habilidades y entender qué significa la palabra éxito para ustedes. Todos estamos hechos para cumplir roles diferentes dentro de una sociedad, ¿Cuál es el tuyo? No esperes que la sociedad lo marque, empieza a buscarlo si todavía no has empezado.

En estas aplicaciones, sí debemos cumplir con un mínimo académico,

porque debemos demostrar que somos capaces de cumplir con nuestras obligaciones y de enfrentar retos académicos.

Además estamos aplicando a instituciones educativas, está claro que las notas tienen un valor. Pero no significa que es lo único que debemos hacer.

La palabra éxito es muy amplia y está hecha para que cada quien le de el significado cómo quiera. No todos debemos hacer lo mismo y tal vez, es por eso que no te motiva lo que está establecido, pero ¿Qué es lo que quieres para ti? Esa pregunta es lo principal que debes mostrar en tu aplicación/

Curriculum‌ ‌ Re-route‌ ‌ Covid-19:‌ ‌How‌ ‌is‌ ‌KCP‌ ‌Closing‌ ‌the‌ ‌Learning‌ ‌Gaps?‌ ‌

A

s schools across the world temporarily closed their doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, KCP turned to remote learning to ensure our students stayed engaged in the learning process. Our teachers and students have remained connected through learning management systems, video conferencing, and other digital educational software to close our 2019-2020 school year.

Our teachers have never worked harder as they did over the last couple of months. The frustrating part of all this is that remote learning lacks the magic of the classroom. This magic is not as apparent to someone who is not an educator. When teachers are face-to-face with their students, something remarkable happens.

When a student is struggling, a teacher can quickly see and sense they need support. They notice the students that seem to be confused, not working, distracted by something, or have a misconception that needs to be addressed immediately. Teachers are constantly adjusting their instruction due to the live feedback they get from their students.

During remote learning, this piece is much more difficult to replicate, so some students struggled more than others during this time. So the question is, “How is KCP going to support those students who have struggled during remote learning?”

During the last few weeks of school, our teachers began looking ahead and preparing the curriculum for the 2020-2021 school year. The first step was determining the most essential knowledge and skills needed for a student to be prepared for the next grade-level, these standards are now known as our “Power Standards”. Next, teachers reflected over the “Power standards” and identified any potential gaps in student learning due to remote learning. They also provided academic information about each of their students to the next teacher. This step was essential in the process to ensure that all gaps in learning were identified before the start of the next school year.

Each teacher took the information provided to them by the previous teacher and began making adjustments to their curriculum to reflect the needs of their incoming students. Each teacher created a “Unit 0” that will diagnose where students are and address the knowledge and skills that will be reviewed during

the first few weeks of school to begin shrinking the learning gaps.

The diagnostic data that we gather at the beginning of the school year and throughout the school year will be more vital than ever in guiding our curriculum and instruction so that we can meet the needs of all students.

Through our “Curriculum Alignment Re-route”, we are placing a greater emphasis on the essential knowledge and skills that will ensure that students have the foundation they need to jump in with grade-level content instead of falling further behind. Taking the time to adjust our curriculum for the 2020 - 2021 school year will help all students to progress towards mastering grade-level standards, no matter where they are starting from. Even though this year has been challenging, our teachers have continued to step up and meet those challenges head-on. In KCP tradition, we will continue to put our students’ needs first as we dive into a new school year. #

Cambio de Ruta para Nuestro Currículo Covid-19: ‌ ‌¿Cómo ‌esta haciendo ‌KCP‌ para cerrar las brechas en el aprendizaje?

medida que los colegios de todo el mundo cerraron sus puertas temporalmente debido a la pandemia del COVID-19, KCP recurrió al aprendizaje remoto para garantizar que nuestros estudiantes se mantuvieran involucrados en el proceso de aprendizaje. Nuestros profesores y estudiantes se han mantenido conectados a través de sistemas de gestión de aprendizaje, videoconferencias y otros software educativos digitales para cerrar nuestro año escolar 2019 - 2020.

Student Center

We have dreamt of the possibilities Now the moment has arrived to enjoy!

The Student Center is now a reality!

This Iconic Symbol of the KCP Spirit has been conceived as an area where students will not only eat, but also learn, share, grow and keep forging long-lasting friendships.

The Student Center is built in a total area of ​​ approximately 2,000 m² of which 750 m² were destined for two air-conditioned dining areas. The first has a capacity for around 130 people and the second, which includes the mezzanine, for approximately 60 people on the first floor and 170 on the mezzanine. It also has an Events Room with capacity for about 35 people.

The Student Center has five televisions, 55 “each, twenty-four security cameras and a sound system that allows us to create four different environments.

Each dining area has three stations where, through the BioFood platform, students and staff can order food and drinks.

Our kitchen is equipped with the latest technology! Our state of the art Combi Oven, the Rational SelfCookingCenter, can cook 750 protein servings or 250 pastry snacks per hour. We have the capacity of serving up to 500 lunches per servings. With the Rational SelfCookingCenter we can prepare breaded, fried, crispy and

juicy products, such as breaded fish or chicken or french fries, without adding any fat. The Student Center has 2.000 liters of refrigerated storage and the best equipment to offer high quality products.

Our team includes four professional Chefs with more than ten years of experience, which have delighted the community with a variety of flavors. They not only have the skills and creativity to develop delicious recipes, but they also strictly implement the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) guidelines.

Up to now, the Student Center has hosted and catered a variety of events which include University Fair, Valentine’s Day Concert, Model United Nations, Sports Festival, Fun Run, Fundación Sanar visit, and Parents meetings, among others.

The Student Center kicked off its first phase on February 3rd, and it has been wonderful to feel the support, excitement and encouragement that the KCP Community has given to make this dream come true. In this short time, we have served over 10.500 lunches. This means approximately 300 lunches per day! And this is just the beginning. Throughout this phase, through feedback we have made adjustments to permanently improve our service.

The second phase will bring many new ideas to this environment! We encourage the KCP Community, not only to come and visit us, but also to make part of this wonderful project, find new ways to use this wonderful area together and leave your mark. #

How many people are you supporting?

Well, we have more than 150 teachers and administrative team and over 750 students and their parents. Anyone of them can ask for support any day, at any time. So... a lot.

Our IT department has been involved in a lot of activities since the COVID-19 quarantine hit us in March this year. If you were wondering how our IT Department has been working, wonder no longer!

We have prepared an exclusive interview with Ms. Lemus, our IT Coordinator, to give you insight on what our experience has been like.

Ms. Lemus, how did you prepare for the quarantine?

We made a list of activities each teacher would have to do in a distance learning scenario, asking ourselves “what if” and “how-to” questions. Then we started to make a list of the tools teachers would have to use and organized training sessions in tools like Google Hangouts, Zoom, Playposit and Chrome Remote Desktop. We also made a list of the teachers who didn’t have laptops and started preparing rolling out laptop loans!

How many computers did you loan?

We lent laptops to our coaches and office team (all of them had desktop computers) and Chromebooks to students from grades 1 and 2. In total about 80 computers were given out

on loan. But it did not stop there. We also distributed other peripheral equipment like document cameras.

How has your Department’s work changed?

It has changed a lot. We used to run through the halls and face things like projectors not starting or audio not playing. Now our support requests are even more difficult. Many times we need to connect with the person who is needing our assistance. We also try to answer all the email messages, hangout chats, phone calls, and WhatsApp chats that we receive. Sometimes we even have to help more than one person at a time! But as a team, we still support each other when we have problems we don’t know how to fix and are continually researching and learning ways to help our KCP community.

How many people work in the department giving support?

Right now, there’s four of us, Rafael our Infrastructure Engineer, Edwin our support Engineer, Dariel our Support Technician, and Myself the IT Coordinator.

How is a day, during support?

We first greet each other every morning in our group chat and together we start reading and answering our IT email support@kcparrish.edu.co.

Soon the phones and chats start going crazy, and before you know it we realize it is 4 PM! We try to disconnect, but still, we give support since phone calls and messages keep coming.

What has changed, from what was planned?

We didn’t imagine this would go on this long. After a while we realized that we could help our teachers and staff get more comfortable and make their work more efficient, so we started sending document cameras, mice, and keyboards to their homes.

They are now as comfortable as if they were working at school!

Is there anything you would like to add?

Nuestro departamento de tecnología ha participado en muchas actividades desde que la cuarentena COVID-19 inició en Marzo. Si se preguntaban cómo ha estado trabajando nuestro Departamento de TI, ¡no se pregunten más! Hemos preparado una entrevista exclusiva con nuestra Coordinadora de Tecnología Sandra Lemus, para tener una idea de cómo ha sido la experiencia.

Ms. Lemus ¿ Cómo se prepararon para la cuarentena?

Hicimos una lista de actividades que los profesores tendrían que hacer en un escenario de aprendizaje a distancia, haciéndonos preguntas de “qué tal si” y “cómo se haría”. Luego comenzamos a hacer una lista de las herramientas que los profesores tendrían que usar y organizamos sesiones de capacitación en herramientas como Google Hangouts, Zoom, Playposit y Chrome Remote Desktop. También hicimos una lista de los profesores que no tenían computadoras portátiles y comenzamos a preparar préstamos! ¿Cuántos computadores entregaron en préstamo?

Prestamos computadores portátiles a nuestros entrenadores y al equipo de la oficina (todos tenían computadoras de escritorio), Chromebooks a los estudiantes de los grados 1 y 2. En total, se entregaron en préstamo alrededor de 80 computadoras.

También distribuimos otros equipos periféricos como cámaras documentales. ¿Cómo ha cambiado el trabajo del departamento?

Ha cambiado mucho, solíamos correr por los pasillos y enfrentarnos a cosas como que los proyectores no se iniciaban o el audio no se reproducía.

Ahora nuestras solicitudes de soporte son aún más difíciles. Muchas veces necesitamos conectarnos con la persona que necesita nuestra asistencia.

También tratamos de responder todos los mensajes de correo electrónico, chats de Hangouts, llamadas telefónicas y chats de WhatsApp que recibimos. ¡A veces incluso tenemos que ayudar a más de una persona a la vez! Pero como equipo, todavía nos apoyamos mutuamente cuando tenemos problemas que no sabemos cómo solucionar y estamos continuamente investigando y aprendiendo formas de ayudar a nuestra comunidad de KCP. ¿Cuántas personas trabajan en el departamento dando soporte?

No imaginamos que esto duraría tanto. Después de un tiempo nos dimos cuenta de que podíamos ayudar a nuestros profesores y al personal a sentirse más cómodos y hacer su trabajo más eficiente, así que comenzamos a enviar cámaras de documentos, mouses y teclados a sus hogares. ¡Ahora están tan cómodos como si estuvieran trabajando en el colegio! ¿Hay alguna cosa que le gustaría agregar?

ATHLETICS 38 ︱ KCP Connections

ur Athletics department closes the school year filled with optimism, faith and hope. An atypical year for everyone, where we developed our sports practice in two totally different scenarios, but with enthusiasm and a lot of dedication. Without doubt, an enriching experience that strengthened us and made us become even more resourceful.

Our year started with a great dynamic. In August we started the High School teams tryouts.

We were beginning to prepare to face our first challenges of the school year: Binational Games in Armenia at Gimnasio Inglés in November and the Cojowa games in Cartagena in September.

Later in that same month we inaugurated the games for the B calendar schools with our Middle School Copa Parrish; a cup that housed 13 schools and 466 student athletes. KCP won 3 awards; the most important of all the trophies: sportsmanship for girls’ football, girls’ basketball and girls’ volleyball.

In October we worked with the Elementary teams. We were organizers of the Elemental Sports Festival for students of A calendar schools. This is a festival that our school offers where students participate in sports alongside low-income sporting schools from our city. In this festival 16 schools and sporting schools, around 600 students, gathered and competed in the different sports.

This event was characterized by including, for the first time in an Elementary festival, Tennis and Chess, only the latter had the participation of 200 children.

In November our High School

Athletics teams traveled to Armenia to face the most important sporting event of the year: The Binational Games.

We traveled to this competition with great enthusiasm and with our suitcases loaded with optimism.

In total, there were 66 student athletes who defended our KCP school colors. Although we did not win any team titles, we obtained the most valuable thing an athlete can have: self worth as an athlete.

We began to see everyone rowing towards the same direction and, most importantly, to practice the Character Counts! Values ​​above all.

The first semester of the year ended with the tryouts for Middle School teams. Without a doubt it was a very exciting moment to see the great acceptance and participation.

Students wanted to belong to these teams that were preparing to participate in the Binational Games in Cartagena, at COJOWA.

Trainer pre-recorded videos or downloaded from youtube were shared by google classroom (students were summoned to a virtual meeting at the beginning of the training session to receive the pre-work orientation).

Theoretical work shared in Google Classroom, with topics related to each sport. We had special talks with motivational trainers, where videos of personalities with an exemplary life story were shown and talks about emotional, moral and biosafety aspects as well as video conferences with athletes and former professional players who are recognized both nationally and internationally.

ATYPICAL SEMESTER

In early March we organized the Elementary Sports Festival for B Calendar schools. A total of 9 schools participated, including the Little League Baseball team and the Atlantic Tennis League.

In total there were around 700 children participating in all sports disciplines: Baseball, Chess, Tennis, boy’s and girl’s Soccer, boy’s and girl’s Basketball and girl’s Volleyball.

DISTANCE LEARNING

With Covid 19 we had to adapt and change our model form face-toface to distance learning; a difficult but not impossible task. We learned and made adjustments along the way and were able to have a

A great success during this remote learning period was the creation of classes with the teams using Google Classroom, thus directing work between the coach and the students through this software (information, work, academic commitments, virtual meetings, etc.). Other major adaptations that were made were the implementation of working methodologies.

To end our school year, a recognition was made in a virtual Assembly at the end of the year where two students per team got recognized with the MVP athlete and another with the Inspirational athlete. In addition to this, a certificate was sent to the home of each student from the Elementary, Middle School, and High School teams.#

l departamento de deportes culmina un año escolar cargado de mucho optimismo, fe y esperanza. Un año atípico para todos, en donde desarrollamos nuestra práctica deportiva en dos escenarios totalmente diferentes, pero con entusiasmo y mucha entrega. Sin ninguna duda una experiencia enriquecedora que nos fortaleció y nos hizo sacar a flote lo recursivo y didácticos que somos.

Nuestro año inició muy dinámico.

En Agosto comenzamos con los tryouts para la escogencia de los equipos de High School. Nos comenzábamos a preparar para afrontar nuestros primeros retos del año escolar: Juegos Binacionales en Armenia en el Gimnasio Inglés en Noviembre y los Cojowa games en Cartagena en Septiembre.

Seguidamente en ese mismo mes inauguramos los juegos de los colegios calendario B con nuestra Copa Parrish de Middle School; una copa que albergó a 13 colegios calendario B y a 466 estudiantes atletas. KCP alcanzó 3 premios, con el más importante de los trofeos: Sportsmanship para Fútbol femenino, baloncesto femenino y Voleibol femenino.

En Octubre el turno fue para los equipos de Elemental. Fuimos organizadores, llevando a cabo el Festival deportivo de Elemental para estudiantes de colegios de calendario A. Este es un espacio que brinda nuestro colegio para participar de justas deportivas con la participación también de escuelas deportivas de escasos recursos de nuestra ciudad. En este festival se dieron cita 16 colegios y escuelas deportivas,

y alrededor de 600 estudiantes, compitiendo en los diferentes deportes dispuestos en el evento.

Este evento se caracterizó por incluir, por primera vez en un festival de Elemental, a los deportes de Tenis y Ajedrez, solo este último contó con la participación de 200 niños.

En Noviembre nuestros equipos de High School viajaban a la ciudad cafetera para afrontar, el evento deportivo más importante del año: Los juegos Binacionales. A esta competencia viajamos con mucha ilusión y con las maletas cargadas de optimismo. En total fueron 66 estudiantes atletas los que defendieron los colores de nuestro colegio, dejando en lo más alto el nombre de nuestra institución, y aunque a nivel deportivo no conseguimos títulos en equipo,

comenzábamos a obtener lo más valioso en un deportista: Amor propio de deportista. Comenzamos a ver el sentimiento y la entrega del uno por el otro, el remar todos para un mismo lado, a sentir la entrega por los colores y, lo más importante, practicar los valores por encima de todo, Character Counts! Se vio reflejado en cada uno de los encuentros deportivos y momentos vividos durante nuestra estadía en Armenia.

El primer semestre del año culminó con la realización de los tryouts para la escogencia de los equipos de Middle School, sin ninguna duda fue un momento muy emocionante al ver la gran acogida que tuvo esta convocatoria. Los estudiantes querían pertenecer a estos equipos que se disponían a participar en los Juegos Binacionales en Cartagena, en el COJOWA.

SEMESTRE ATÍPICO

A principios de Marzo fuimos organizadores del Festival deportivo de Elemental para colegios de calendario B. Un total de 9 colegios participaron, incluyendo el equipo de pequeñas ligas de Béisbol y la liga de Tenis del Atlántico. En total fueron alrededor de 700 niños participantes en todas las disciplinas deportivas: Béisbol, Ajedrez, Tenis, Fútbol masculino y femenino, Baloncesto masculino y femenino y Voleibol femenino, fueron los deportes que se practicaron.

APRENDIZAJE A DISTANCIA

Con la llegada del Covid-19 tuvimos que adaptarnos y cambiar nuestro modelo de educación presencial a distancia; una tarea difícil pero no

imposible. Con los aprendizajes que teníamos y con los ajustes que fuimos haciendo en el camino, pudimos tener un modelo que cerraba la brecha entre estos dos.

Un gran éxito en este periodo a distancia fue la creación de clases con los equipos utilizando Google Classroom, direccionando así el trabajo entre el entrenador y el estudiantes por este medio (información , trabajos, compromisos, reuniones virtuales, etc ). Otras de las grandes adaptaciones que se hicieron fue la implementación de metodologías de trabajo. Dentro de las cuales dispusimos las siguientes:

equipo, un reconocimiento que da lugar al deportista MVP y otro al deportista Inspiracional.

Asimismo se envió un certificado a la casa de cada estudiante de los equipos de Elemental, Middle School y High School. # Jhon Madrid Athletics Director

Entrenamientos en vivo (para ello contamos con aplicaciones como Zoom y Google Meet). Vídeos pre grabados por los entrenadores o vídeos descargados de youtube y compartidos por Google classroom, para posterior realización por parte de los estudiantes ( Los estudiantes eran citados a reunión virtual al inicio del entrenamiento para recibir las orientaciones previas al trabajo a realizar).

Trabajos teóricos compartidos en Google Classroom, con temáticas deportivas relacionadas con cada deporte. Charlas con entrenadores de carácter motivacional, donde se presentaban vídeos de personalidades con una ejemplar historia de vida.

Asimismo charlas con temáticas en el aspecto emocional, moral y de bioseguridad.

Videoconferencias con deportistas y exdeportistas reconocidos a nivel nacional e internacional.

Para finalizar nuestro año escolar se hizo un reconocimiento en una Asamblea virtual de fin de año, a dos estudiantes por

Community Service

Continues on its mission to support our foundations through different activities throughout the year. We understand the lasting positive effect that being an active member of our community has on our students and their families and how providing service to those in need contributes to a child’s development and learning and the promotion of civic well-being.

FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES AND VISITS TO FOUNDATIONS 1st Grade held a Hygiene Products Drive this year and visited the Acesco Foundation where they had a fun morning learning about dental hygiene, handing out hygiene kits and getting to know each other.

2nd grade had a Movie Fundraiser in support of the Foundation Mi Hogar.

3A had a Bake Sale to support their foundation Fundacion Caminos de María.

5th grade had its annual FUN RUN, with the participation of students from 1st to 5th grade. This year’s funds were destined to Colegio Madre María Sara Alvarado.

NHS members shared an afternoon filled with art, music and activities with children and mothers of Sanar Foundation.

KEY CLUB visited Fundación Caminos de Maria and had a fun filled afternoon with arts and crafts and board games.

TRAFFIC DUTY

This year KCP started a new traffic scheme with the purpose of reducing traffic congestion and with this change came a new Traffic Duty Program.

We would like to highlight the work of the more than 50 student volunteers who have participated in the program.

QUARANTINE

With this unique and historic time we are living we are working even harder to give back to our community through different programs:

I AM SUPPORTIVE, I AM KCP CAMPAIGN Starting with KCP KEY CLUB’s fundraising program “I am Supportive, I am KCP” in joining efforts with the Alcaldía of Barranquilla to deliver food and medical supplies for the most vulnerable communities in our city.

With the support of the KCP community we were able to raise

#KCPSHIELDS4ALL

Considering that one of the most common forms of Covid-19 transmission is through the drops produced by sneezing and coughing, health professionals are at the highest risk of contracting the virus.

The #KCPSHIELDS4ALL Program, led by KCP KEY CLUB and NHS, aims to protect as many health professionals as possible.

Our students and their families are currently working on more than 2,500 face shields that will be donated to medical centers in the city.

FOOD AND MEDICAL SUPPLY DONATIONS TO OUR FOUNDATIONS With the activities and fundraisers we work on this year from grades Stem to 12 we were able to send food and medical supplies to 13 foundations, reaching more than 2,000 families! #

Servicio a la Comunidad continúa con su misión de apoyar a nuestras fundaciones, a través de distintas actividades durante todo el año. Comprendemos el efecto positivo y duradero que tiene el ser un miembro activo de nuestra comunidad en la vida de nuestros estudiantes y sus familias y cómo el ayudar a comunidades vulnerable contribuye al desarrollo y aprendizaje de los niños y a la promoción del bienestar cívico.

CAMPAÑAS/ACTIVIDADES DE RECAUDACIÓN DE FONDOS Y VISITAS A FUNDACIONES Primero elemental realizó una campaña de recaudación de productos de higiene este año y visitó por primera vez a la Fundación Acesco. Tuvieron una divertida mañana aprendiendo sobre higiene dental, repartiendo kits de higiene y compartiendo con los niños de la fundación.

Segundo grado recaudó fondos para su fundación Mi Hogar con la proyección de una película.

3A tuvo una venta de comida con el propósito de apoyar su fundación Fundación Caminos de María.

Quinto grado tuvo su FUN RUN anual, maratón que cuenta con la participación de estudiantes de primero a quinto grado. Los fondos se destinaron al Colegio Madre María Sara Alvarado.

Los miembros de NHS compartieron una tarde llena de arte, música y actividades con los niños y madres de la Fundación Sanar.

KEY CLUB visitó la Fundación Caminos de María donde compartieron una tarde llena de manualidades y juegos de mesa.

PROGRAMA DE TRANSITO

Este año, KCP comenzó un nuevo esquema de tráfico con el propósito de reducir la congestión y mejorar el flujo y con este cambio surgió un nuevo Programa de Tránsito donde hemos contado con la participación de más de 50 estudiantes voluntarios de grados 7a 12.

KCP - ESCUDOS PARA TODOS Teniendo en cuenta que una de las formas más comunes de transmisión de Covid-19 es a través de las gotas producidas por los estornudos y la tos de una persona infectada, los profesionales de la salud tienen el mayor riesgo de contraer el virus.

El programa ESCUDOS PARA TODOS, liderado por KCP KEY CLUB y NHS, tiene como objetivo proteger al mayor número de profesionales de la salud posible.

Nuestros estudiantes y sus familias están trabajando en la producción de más de 2,500 escudos de vida que serán donados a distintos centros médicos de la ciudad.
