Soyouwant tocompete?

KCPA's competition team, the Assembly, will have teams that include dancers from ages 5 to 18. Team names are inspired by the greek alphabet with our oldest team being Team Alpha and our Youngest; Team Zeta While these 2 teams will have the same name, each year we may present new team names These teams will meet each week for 1 to 15 hours for technique and rehearsal They will also build relationships and participate in events as part of these teams. We call these teams your " core team " and are your immediate-dance-family for the season!

In addition to these teams, dancers can be invited to compete with a variety of different dances in the styles of Musical Theater, Contemporary, Jazz, Lyrical, Modern, HipHop, Tap and "Open” These dances will rehearse for 45 minutes to 1 hour each week

All dances will have a Choreography-Kickstart-Session from 4 to 6 hours with their choreographers to begin the choreography process

FAQ’s

Does everyone who tries out for assembly make a team?

No this is not a guarantee Factors that would weigh into this decision would be the skill of the dancer and if we have enough dancers of a similar age and skill level to create a team Another important factor while we have faith in the talent and ability of our choreographers, we have to balance their capacity to be available to multiple teams and studios which may also limit our teams

You provided information about additional costs in the information packet; but are there specific shoe requirements for assembly.

For our dances requiring jazz shoes the studio shoe is a Bloch pulse – the color is determined based on the costuming and request of the choreographer and will be determined when costumes are finalized

Mini tap teams will wear Shim Sham tap shoes measured and purchased through KCPA and run about $80 Junior tap teams, depending on age will have the option to order GS1s in black which are measured to fit your dancer’s foot (these are about $180) Our senior tap team really shines in custom GS1 tap boots in TEAL!!! These boots are sharp and a great benefit to our most advanced tap team Costs for the boots are about $350 All ordered tap shoes will have shipping fees determined at the time of purchase

If my dancer doesn’t make a team, are there other opportunities with Assembly?

Your dancer could be placed as an understudy to a team, which based on their progress and growth could result in being placed on the team officially If your dancer does not make a team, our teachers will continue to observe them throughout the season and assess their potential for future teams Our goal at KCPA is to understand our dancers goals and help them reach them Because of this, we have an incredible teaching staff who has carried beginning dancers through to the advanced level

Does everyone get a solo, duet or trio who wants one?

Specialty dances are a privilege and not a guarantee or promise We have very talented choreographers who are in high demand and limited availability Individuals selected for these opportunities will need to show a commitment to their regular teams experience and comfortability on stage as well as commitment to consistent practice as well as being open to individual critiques All specialty assignments are requested (not demanded) through the audition google form and assignments will be determined by Jennifer Kaiser and the instructors Dancers and parents are encouraged not to ask teachers directly as we want to respect the process

Are there academic requirements?

We do not have specific academic requirements for Assembly but recognize that your dancers are students first and it is their responsibility to start learning how to prioritize plan ahead and balance dance with their studies This may mean using breaks between classes to do homework or study or using weekends to get ahead when we ’ re nearing competition/convention weeks

How are conflicts/absences handled? Is there a difference between school or family related?

Prior to the start of the season we ask for all potential conflicts for the entire season This includes school as well as personal/family conflicts (think athletic game conflicts drill team dates family vacations etc ) We utilize these dates to determine which competitions conventions assembly unites dates fit best for our teams ’ schedules Our studio director has established good relationships with local drill team directors and works to address potential conflicts with major events We do ask for each dancer’s commitment to not only their assembly classes but also their technique classes These technique classes build and refine the movements being learned and choreographed in their team dances and should not be dismissed More information regarding the consequences of missing multiple classes can be found in the assembly contract

What if my child gets sick or injured before a competition?

We understand these things may happen however the show must go on and a collective decision will be made between Jennifer Kaiser and the instructor on how to proceed If a dancer is too sick or unable to attend rehearsal the week prior to competition they may not be prepared to perform If the dancer is injured we will asses how to proceed based on the severity of the situation and the needs of the dancer and the team Our goal is to make sure our dancers are well represented and confident on the competition stage

KCPA Assembly

Are there big/littles for mentors?

We don’t do big/little assignments for Assembly teams however we provide opportunities throughout the season for our big kids and littles to interact with each other and get to know one another through our assembly unites events our competitions and conventions Unfortunately bigs/littles becomes more of a who can outbuy the next person vs a mentoring opportunity so we spend time focusing on establishing those relationships in other ways versus an official big/little program

What is recommended to be purchased for conventions & competitions?

You aren t required to purchase anything specifically for conventions and competitions For awards during competitions, we do require our dancers to wear their KCPA jacket and black leggings or KCPA joggers For the 1st day of conventions, we ask dancers to wear KCPA colors (teal, red, white, silver) and dance outfits that will make them stand out in a crowd Day 2 is still dancewear, but not specific to KCPA colors

Does everyone get a locker? Is there a fee?

Currently, we have enough lockers for each dancer who wants one to be assigned one They are not required and there is currently no fee, however, this could be re-evaluated should need surpass availability or if we have issues with dancers not taking proper care of their locker

Will we see a class schedule before saying yes to a team?

Yes however sharing your availability and conflicts is crucial to helping to establish a class schedule as we have to plan for our performance and technique classes as well as our assembly classes Generally the schedule is ready and shared in the week following our June recital

How many performances will my team do?

Your dancer is guaranteed to compete in 3 (Zetas and mini teams) or 4 competitions (junior teams and up) and will attend a minimum of 2 dance conventions Additional opportunities may be offered (ex Wylie East Sapphire Winter Showcase, Wylie Holiday Parade, Murphy Talent Show, etc ) As a team, you may choose to participate in these events if the team has a desire, all members are available and the dance is ready to perform at the event

Are there volunteer opportunities for parents and dancers?

Yes, we do have KCPA cares events which provide volunteer opportunities in the community and annually we serve as a Toys for Tots drop off location where we strive to provide bikes for big kids There are other opportunities to volunteer for our KCPA sponsored assembly events as well

Will this help my child be in high school drill?

How is studio dance different than high school drill?

Taking technique classes will not guarantee your dancer a spot on drill team, however, consistent commitment to coming to class and executing the techniques taught will make your dancer stronger and increase their chances In our technique classes dancers are aligned to learn skills based on certain skill levels and exhibiting mastery before they level up This differs from drill team where the routines and choreography are taught and expected to be executed by all team members regardless of training or skill level KCPA Assembly dancers will be challenged by their teachers and choreographers to meet a higher level of expectations as individuals and as team members With that in mind, most of our KCPA Assembly dancers who try out for Drill team are placed on the team

**All pricing is based on August 2024 pricing and could increase if product prices increase prior to ordering
