Summer is the perfect time to open your doors and gather with friends and family for easygoing entertaining. With the sun setting later and the weather inviting, casual backyard cookouts, poolside snacks, or evening s’mores around a fire pit become effortless ways to connect. Summer hospitality doesn’t require perfection—just a welcoming atmosphere, simple food, and good company. Hosting in the summer is less about formality and more about creating space for joy and togetherness.

Dearest Friends Summer has always been a reason to celebrate—No more school, warm evenings, vacations, getting tan at the pool or the beach, and backyard barbecues with friends. Sometimes, the best remedy for life’s chaos is a spontaneous escape with your favorite girls. A girlfriend’s getaway is more than a vacation it’s a joyful pause from reality where deadlines, dishes, and to-do lists are replaced with road trip sing-alongs, secrets shared over mocktails, and mornings that start with laughter instead of alarms. This trip was all about being enchanted, charmed, and being boldly feminine, and we know you aren’t going to be disappointed when we share where we went!

We decided to jump in the car and head out to Mesa, AZ, to meet up with some of our greatest friends for spontaneous fun and laughter that left our cheeks sore. Stepping through the doors, we were astounded by the attention to detail as this whimsical tea room seemed to come alive. Roses and flowers bloomed across the wallpaper while crystal chandeliers dripped from the ceiling like frozen stardust. Etched mirrors with beveled edges reflected the glow of each corner of the room as they hung on the walls.

Delicate bunnies peek out from the countertops as if they are waiting to be invited to your table. Each teacup is a tiny masterpiece, brimming with fragrant blends and imagination, while dainty pastries and finger sandwiches await on floral, tiered porcelain serving trays.

Here, time slows down, wonder blooms, and the ordinary is left at the door. It’s not just a tea room - it’s a portal to a world where fantasy and femininity swirl together like cream in your cup.

Girlfriends’ Get-away Travel Tips Traveling can be stressful, regardless of how much planning you do. However, you can certainly mitigate circumstances with some careful planning for you and your pals.

Golden Rules for Traveling with friends: 1.Talk about budgets and money early. Ensure everyone is on the same page regarding expenses and discuss how to handle any unexpected expenses that may arise (for instance, if you are driving your car and get a flat tire, who pays?).

2.Allow time for everyone to take a breather by themselves.

Everyone needs a break now and again - it isn’t personal.

3.Assign tasks/jobs for everyone to take care of, so that the burden isn’t on just one person. Who will drive/book flights, arrange for accommodations, ground transportation to/from the airport, etc?

4.Have a “go with the flow” attitude, and things will be so much easier. Things happen, plans will change. Be flexible to make adjustments when needed.

5.Work out a way to discuss annoyances. Don’t let them build up and cause a rift. Everything has a solution, you just need to work together to find it.

6.Respect each other's sleeping habits - bring earbuds or sleep masks if one is an early riser or late sleeper.

7.Share a packing list to avoid bringing duplicates, such as a blowdryer, a first-aid kit, and other essentials.

We will use any excuse to throw a party. No, seriously, nothing makes us more excited than planning and executing an event. Especially when it is to celebrate a friend near and dear to our hearts. Our busy lives often take us further and further from relationships, so at Heart of Hospitality, we make an effort to celebrate friends as often as we can. Community and connection are incredibly important, and every opportunity we have to strengthen the bonds of friendship is valuable.

To celebrate our dear friend who is also one of our biggest supporters, Chantay Bridges, we headed up to the barn. We surprised her with an intimate lunch on the deck where we tried to make her the spotlight of the day, but of course, our mascot Uno didn’t get that memo as he shows center stage.

Summer is not complete without a great meal featuring barbecue as the centerpiece. If you’re looking for something beyond a typical July 4th cookout of burgers and hot dogs, kick it up a notch with a beef brisket.

When I think of my growing-up years in Texas, especially the summer months, I have fond memories of my mother cooking. I recently discovered that my mom, who has since passed away, saved one of my baby dolls and all of my Barbie dolls, including Barbie-style dolls that resembled the singer Marie Osmond and the Star Wars character Princess Leia. The fact that she saved them made me realize that they brought back memories for her, too, of warm days of recreation and evenings of hot, tasty food. In the summer, I spent hours playing with these dolls or reading books. Throughout the day, I frequently dashed into the kitchen only to smell the rich aroma of my mother’s weekend meal preparation.

One of the best smells was the aroma of her barbecue brisket. I still remember the smoky aroma of the meat marinating in the refrigerator. She often paired the brisket with a side of Potatoes Romanoff and a salad. Steakhouses long ago discovered that Potatoes Romanoff is a favorite side dish for sirloin, and it has the same effect when served alongside barbecue brisket.

My mother’s recipe for brisket was a three-day affair. To be fair, she could have completed all the steps in one day, but the longer marinating time is worth the wait. With the latest coupons in hand, my mother went to the grocery store every Thursday afternoon.

When she made brisket, she pulled the brisket out of the fridge on Friday. She spent just a few minutes preparing the meat for overnight marinating. She generously coated the meat with garlic salt. Then she poured half a bottle of liquid smoke over the meat, sealed it, and let it marinate in the refrigerator overnight.

The next day, usually a Saturday, she baked the meat at 275° for four hours. She unwrapped the meat and poured off the liquid. When the brisket was cool, she sliced it thinly across the grain. She then poured barbecue sauce between the slices, sealed the meat again, and stored it in the refrigerator overnight for further marination.

She also spent some time on Saturday preparing the Potatoes Romanoff. She cooked the potatoes, shredded them, and mixed them with cheddar cheese and sour cream. Like the meat, she stored the potatoes overnight.

Then, on the day of the meal, usually a Sunday, she baked the barbecue brisket for one hour at 350°F and baked the potato dish for 30 minutes, also at 350°F.

While my mother had a heart for hospitality, she was also a skilled quilter.

She utilized her sewing skills to decorate her dining room table. When I was a young child, she made many of my clothes and, occasionally, she made clothes for my dolls. When I grew up and it became cheaper and easier to buy clothing from the store, she turned her attention to quilts. With a specialized sewing machine, she made large-sized wall quilts whose themes reflected different holidays. Her summer quilts boasted Uncle Sam, summer boats, and U.S. flags. To accompany her big cooking weekends, she quilted placemats. She served her barbecue brisket meal on her Texasthemed quilted placemats, which featured stars and stripes.

My mother also enjoyed teaching children ages 4 and 5. As a preschool teacher at a public school, she enjoyed the fun of teaching essential language skills through rhyming books and beautiful children’s stories. Though I didn’t inherit her love of teaching, I did inherit her love of children’s books. While most of my books focus on American history topics for adults, I have created a line of children’s books about patriotism, titled Revolutionary Readers, in celebration of the United States of America’s 250th anniversary. The first book in the series is My American Flag, a rhyming book for children aged 4 to 6 that teaches the basics about the American flag, including its shapes and stars.

In 2026, the United States will turn 250 years old

The first day: Line a large flat baking pan with heavy foil. Place the meat on the foil.

Garlic salt the beef generously. Pour half of the liquid smoke over the meat and seal it. Store in the refrigerator overnight. The second day: Bake 4 hours at 275°F. Unwrap and pour off the liquid. Cool and slice the meat thin across the grain. Poor barbecue sauce between the slices and on top. Refrigerate and store overnight. Third day: bake 1 hour at 350°F. Judy Hampton’s Potatoes Romanoff Six large potatoes One pint of sour cream One and a half cups shredded cheddar cheese 1/2 Bunch green onions One and a half teaspoons of salt Pepper to taste Paprika on top Cook potatoes in water until done. Cool.

Remove skins. Shred in a large bowl. Add chopped green onion, cheese, sour cream, salt, and pepper. Mix well. Put in the Dish and sprinkle with additional cheese and paprika. Cover, refrigerate overnight. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Can eat it cold.

It’s a way to extend hospitality from a place of energy and joy, rather than stress and exhaustion. Whether your party is for four or forty, the principles are the same: simple ingredients, make-ahead prep, and bold, fresh flavors that satisfy. The secret is in the simplicity You don’t need to be a gourmet chef to create a sugar-free menu to impress. The less complicated, the better. The key? Focus on real, whole ingredients that shine on their own. Think colorful veggies, quality proteins, and sauces that don’t rely on added sugar to taste good. I find these wholesome foods from what I call “God’s good smorgasbord.” Here’s the truth: most people are just relieved to attend a party where they can eat and still feel good afterward. When guests leave saying, “I didn’t miss the sugar at all!”—you know you’ve done something special.

Think grilled chicken with a sugar-free marinade (made with olive oil, lemon, garlic, and herbs) or a juicy, bunless burger bar with all the fixings. Proteins are naturally low in sugar and high in satisfaction.

Build a Beautiful Spread of Sides Think beyond the usual starchy sides. Try a vibrant tomato and cucumber salad with fresh dill, red wine vinegar, or grilled zucchini ribbons tossed in olive oil and sea salt. One show-stopper side can make your whole table shine.

Offer a Festive Drink Without the Crash Sparkling mineral water with fresh mint, citrus fruit wedges, and berries in a pretty pitcher feels as celebratory as sugary sodas or cocktails, and nobody misses the headache afterward.

Finish with a Fresh and Tasty Treat Fresh berries topped with whipped heavy or coconut cream, or a chilled sugar-free lemon mousse served in individual jars, are sweet without sending anyone into a sugar coma.

A Few Dish Ideas That Wow (and Won’t Wear You Out) - Let’s keep it simple with just a few suggestions you can mix and match based on your event size and vibe: Appetizer Idea: Jalapeño Poppers Cut jalapeños in half and remove seeds. Prepare a mixture of cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, crumbled bacon (or wrap the bacon), and hot sauce. Fill jalapeños with the mixture and bake until the cheese is browned and bubbly. This is a healthy twist on deep-fried and breaded poppers, and equally delicious.

Whether you’re feeding a party of two or twenty, the key is to do as much as you can ahead of time. Chop veggies, marinate proteins, and set your table hours before the first guest arrives. When you’re not scrambling, you can enjoy the party, too. Nourish with Purpose, Celebrate with Joy. Main Dish Idea: Citrus Herb Grilled Chicken Marinate chicken overnight with olive oil, lemon zest, garlic, and chopped rosemary. Grill until crispy and golden—easy, crowd-pleasing, and naturally sugar-free.

Side Dish Idea: Cauliflower “Potato” Salad Steam cauliflower florets until fork-tender, mix with avocado mayo, diced celery, red onion, chopped boiled eggs, and a touch of mustard.

It’s creamy and cool, and no one misses the spuds.

Dessert Idea: Chilled Berry Parfaits Layer fresh blueberries and strawberries with whipped heavy or coconut cream in clear glasses. Top with slivered almonds and a sprig of mint. It’s light, beautiful, and done in 10 minutes.

Whenever you host a sugar-free gathering, you do more than serve food. You also create a space for connection, joy, and good health. You lead by example, showing that healthy choices can be delicious, doable, and deeply satisfying.

As someone who once believed the party wasn’t complete without sugar, I now know the opposite is true: the real celebration is waking up the next day feeling light, energized, and grateful for the memories made and the food that fueled them.

So, light the citronella candles, fire up the grill, and put on your favorite summer playlist. You have everything you need to host a sugar-free summer gathering that your guests won’t forget.

Have you ever been on the receiving end of hospitality? Did it bring joy to your heart? Have others’ small but meaningful acts of kindness provided you with a sense of comfort, protection, and blessing? I know I’ve been impacted by such touching examples of hospitality, especially in my travels overseas.

While living and working in Bulgaria, my family and I have been blessed to receive hospitality in so many life-impacting ways. Amongst my story are 7 unique and not-so-unique ways to offer Hospitality.

The Gift of a Simple Meal My first exposure to Bulgarian hospitality came in 1993 upon arriving in a tiny city nestled in the Balkan Mountains. Friendly faces greeted us at the train station and soon took us to a home filled with a mouthwatering aroma and a table laden with food—stuffed peppers, shopska salata (tomatoes, cucumbers, and Bulgarian feta cheese), homemade bread, and honey. Our hosts became treasured friends that we still hold dear today.

The Gift of Talent Another treasured memory took place in the capital city of Sofia. We attended a private concert hosted by some amazing professional musicians.

There were only 6 members on our team, and about 20 people filled the three-hundred-seat music hall. Those who provided the concert became precious new friends. Friends that we have known for over 30 years. I can still hear the instrumental version of As the Deer Pants for the Water. Priceless.

The Gift from Poverty In the year 2013, we were considering purchasing a house in a tiny mountain village. Upon arriving to inspect the property, we met a neighbor. Her name —Baba Donka. Baba means grandma in Bulgarian.

She greeted us with a bottle of Rakia, which is bootlegged brandy made from any available fruit.

We soon learned that her abundant gift of giving (out of her poverty) was her way to show love to us. We were often on the receiving end of eggs,

fresh milk, homemade yogurt, vegetables, as well as herbs and teas forged from the forest.

Whatever she had, she shared with us. In her own words, she explained, “I am your Bulgarian Grandma.” She didn’t need to tell us this. Her actions spoke louder than words.

Gift of Time In the year 2000, we met a young man. He offered to help us in any way he could. Even to this day, that offer still stands. All we need to do is ask, and he will help us. One of the most priceless ways I watched this man help was when we sold our van to an organization from Hungary that was assisting Ukrainian refugees. Three hours after selling the van, the driver and passenger were in a horrible accident. But by then, we were in the south of Bulgaria, without a car, and couldn't get to where the accident had occurred. One call to this man, this giver of time, and he took over. He dealt with everything the buyer of the van needed— insurance negotiations, repairs, and a place to stay. This giver of time had never met this man in need. Yet his simple offer to serve us, in whatever manner of need we had, blessed our hearts beyond measure.

The Gift of Safety and Rest Many times, when we traveled across Bulgaria visiting various towns and villages, the people would offer us a safe place to rest. Oftentimes, they gave up their own beds to offer us comfort.

One such family even slept on their kitchen floor so we would have a place to lay our heads. But perhaps the greatest gift of rest was found on a cold winter weekend in a home without heat. We slept with 2 to 3 heavy wool blankets piled on top of us to keep warm. We felt the weight of the blankets bear down on us, while the frost of our breath hung in the air. Yet, the warmth in the house came from the hospitality given, not the temperature of the rooms. Such sweet, warm memories. Memories like these still touch my heart and teach me a great deal about the gift of hospitality. Hospitality doesn’t need to come out of our abundance.

The Gift from a Stranger Once, we traveled to a small gypsy village in northern Bulgaria. Our team leader was supposed to meet us at the train station. But when the train pulled out of the station with us on the platform, we realized that our team leader was nowhere to be found. We knew no one in this village. We had never been there before. We had no other instructions but to go to this village, and the team leader would meet us there. We decided to walk towards the center of the village, hoping to find a café to shorten the wait. As we walked down the street, there was a gypsy man sitting on the sidewalk with his head bowed down, much in the position of a beggar. The gypsy said one word without lifting his head, “Jim.” We were shocked. We asked, “Do you know Jim?” The gypsy then got up and started walking. We followed. He brought us to his house, where his mother offered us drinks—a thick compote. This was the sweetest drink I’ve ever tasted, and she then proceeded to add 2 more heaping tablespoons of sugar. Good thing we weren’t diabetic. Sugar is a special treat among the poor in Bulgaria due to the cost. We couldn’t communicate, but the hospitality was evident. We enjoyed our time while trying to connect via charades, our broken Bulgarian, and their Romani dialect. We wondered if we would find Jim? Where would we sleep? No need to worry. Amongst the hospitality, Jim found us.

The Gift of a Smile But my favorite gift of hospitality was a simple smile. In a land filled with hopelessness, it was common after the fall of communism to see despair etched across the people’s faces. Yet a simple smile could brighten the day. I remember a moment as if it were yesterday. I was walking down a busy Sofia sidewalk (well, more like jostling down the street) when the face of a woman came into view. Her face filled with hopelessness, but she carried a bright yellow flower just below her chin, as if hugging the stem of the flower to her heart.

The contrast between her face and the flower was striking. It formed a picture in my mind. Misery amongst dreams. Despair amongst hope. This picture was the gift I hoped to offer to these people. I wanted to cry out, “Help, dreams, and hope are all within your reach.” But the despair among the people began to pull me down. That was until I met a few random people on the streets whose smiles lit up the day like a bright star in the darkest of nights. I still remember those smiley, curious faces stopping to talk to us foreigners.

Never forget, there is always hope, no matter how dark it seems. And many times, hope can be found amidst a simple act of hospitality.

Even YouTube can be a place to explore a new hobby with parental guidance, whether that is a new sport, robotics, painting, or sewing.

There is nothing more satisfying than a good night’s sleep. Our bodies require sleep and rest, despite the rush and hustle of this day and age. Saundra Dalton-Smith, M.D., the author of Sacred Rest, writes that “rest is the most underused, chemical-free, safe and effective alternative therapy available to us.” Rest not only means sleep, but also separation from things and activities that cause heightened stress. Summers are a precious commodity in families; on average, we have eighteen summers with our children.
