Course Overview • Unique opportunity to study how people (civilians & Armed Forces) behave in extreme adversity, how they prepare for these events and the long-term effects • Multi-disciplinary & multi-national • Limited to approx. 30 students to ensure high standard of teaching • Consistently score highly in Post-graduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) for IoPPN • Student choice is important - students are encouraged to create their own essay questions and dissertation topics


Research & emerging trends • Latest findings from King’s Centre for Military Health Research (KCMHR) are used in our teaching • Cross-nation comparisons - US, Germany, Russia, Japan, France, Israel, Palestine • Topical and responsive to emerging issues - Psychology of terrorism - Civilian response to terrorism - Violence amongst veterans - PTSD - Suicide & alcohol misuse in military • External speakers from key areas: hostages, treatment, law, charity sector and media

Medical school Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Military charities or medical NGOs Research & academia Students with clinical appointments (e.g. therapists, nurses or psychiatrists) use the MSc to move into new areas & secure promotion • Senior NCOs in the Armed Forces often become officers
