EXTENDED MEDICAL DEGREE PROGRAMME

To provide care that truly meets the needs of patients, healthcare workforces must reflect the diversity of the populations they serve. We need medical professionals

from all backgrounds, with a range of lived experiences.

King’s Extended Medical Degree Programme (EMDP) was established to encourage wider participation in medicine – and allows everyone to flourish no matter their background. Specifically designed for students from non-selective state schools, 90 per cent of students on this course are the first in their family to go to university and over 90 per cent are from black and ethnic minority backgrounds. Through additional support and activities, the EMDP helps level the playing field so students can thrive throughout their studies and reach their full potential in their future medical careers.

Since 2001, over 600 students have graduated from the EMDP. Many graduates choose to return to work in their local area, where they can be part of a diverse, inclusive workforce that offers empathetic and effective care for all.

PRESIDENT’S GLOBAL LEADERSHIP AWARD

The challenges faced by our society are changing at an unprecedented pace.

Recent events, including a global pandemic, conflict and forced migration, and the climate crisis, demonstrate that today’s problems don’t recognise national boundaries. The world needs culturally competent, collaborative leaders who reflect the diverse communities around us, and who can find solutions to benefit us all.

The President’s Global Leadership Award brings leadership into the classroom, harnessing the passion of King’s students and helping them to develop the skills they need to deliver effective solutions to 21st century problems. Through reflective learning, group discussions and talks from high-profile leaders, students develop a deep understanding of what leadership is, what leadership means to them, and, most importantly, how leadership can be put into practice in a real-world context.

With students from 160 countries, King’s is the 11th most international university in the world. This makes it the perfect place to shape the generation of global leaders the world needs.

CIVIC LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

The Civic Leadership Academy (CLA) is King’s College London’s flagship social mobility programme. It exists to address disparities in experience and outcomes for underrepresented students, working with 50 undergraduate students per year to develop their leadership skills while creating change in our local communities.

Students complete an internship with a local community organisation, where they focus on addressing social issues and gaining key employability skills; and a leadership development curriculum, designed to build the knowledge and skills students need to embrace civic participation.

Partner organisations across the years include Providence Row, tackling homelessness; Breaking Barriers which helps refugees rebuild their lives; and Eastside, a charity that helps young people develop their creative thinking through the arts.

The CLA supports students to be highly employable, civically minded, engaged citizens and provides a bursary so that students from all backgrounds can make a difference.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP INSTITUTE

The King’s Entrepreneurship Institute is a springboard for entrepreneurs.

To date, ventures supported by the Entrepreneurship Institute have raised £100,527,150 in investment, generated £82,573,446 in revenue, and created 1286 jobs around the world. It has helped thousands of students, staff and alumni unlock vital skills, excel in their careers and start their own successful businesses.

Supporting the King’s community to find revolutionary new ways to address humanity’s greatest problems, the Entrepreneurship Institute gives creative problem solvers an opportunity to collaborate with like-minded innovators and changemakers.

4

POLICY IDOL

Could you change the world in three minutes? Policy Idol gives King’s students a platform to see if their ideas can do just that.

A showcase for innovative thinking, this annual competition gives students the opportunity to pitch their policy ideas to a panel of judges who work across politics, academia, and industry. It harnesses the passion of King’s students and gives them the opportunity to champion causes they care about. Students who reach the Policy Idol Final receive professional communications training and dedicated support from a mentor to really develop and hone their policy pitch.

Through Policy Idol, students share inspiring, practical and imaginative ideas which have the potential to solve key societal issues. Topics have included tackling discrimination faced by looked after children and care leavers, addressing period poverty, and improving mental health through sport.

SANCTUARY PROGRAMME

Today, more than 100 million people are forcefully displaced worldwide. The King’s Sanctuary Programme is a sector-leading initiative that brings together education, research and impact to tackle this pressing global challenge.

Working to ensure education remains a right for all, the Sanctuary Programme offers individuals affected by conflict and displacement opportunities to rebuild their lives and fulfil their potential. Sanctuary seekers are welcomed and included at King’s and supported through scholarships and fellowships. The Programme is also bringing about lasting change by creating safe pathways to sanctuary and shaping migration policy and practice.

Since 2015, the Sanctuary Programme has: provided 57 scholarships, including full tuition fee support and financial assistance; supported more than 1 million learners worldwide through online learning courses; supported 15 at-risk academics to continue their research at King’s through existing schemes and a new fellowship programme; and launched the Sanctuary Hub, bringing together academics, civil society, government and sanctuary seekers to co-produce research and shape global migration policy.

6

MONEY MENTORS

For many students, managing money at university can feel incredibly daunting.

The Money Mentors at King’s are current students who want to use their lived experience to support their peers to make the most of their money, whatever their circumstances. With supervision and training from Money & Housing Advisors, they offer guidance on budgeting and saving, finding the best deals, and provide practical tips on balancing work and study.

The cost-of-living crisis is making money management harder for students. Having judgement-free, practical support from people who appreciate what they are going through is vital.

7

KCLSU WELLBEING

We know that good wellbeing allows us all to thrive and reach our full potential. But knowing how we can best support our wellbeing can be difficult.

When students start university, they are often faced with challenges they have never encountered before. Every student is automatically a member of KCLSU who create spaces for students to socialise, connect and make change.

The oldest student union in the country, KCLSU has been looking after students since 1873. Today, this includes our Take Time Out initiative, which helps students manage their work-life balance; peer-to-peer support and mentoring, and welcoming spaces where students can prioritise their wellbeing and learn about the support available to them. The Wellbeing Hub also offers a range of activities, events, and resources to suit everyone.
