2011 HONOR ARY CHAIRS DR. L AWRENCE COHEN & DONNA GOULD COHEN Thank you for your appreciation and enthusiasm for KCJMCA and its programs that serve Village Shalom and the Kansas City region. We are proud to have your generous support during the Seventh Annual UrbanSuburban at the Epsten Gallery during KCJMCA’s 20th anniversary!

Dr. Lawrence Cohen moved to Kansas City in 1972 with his late wife, Helen, and their four children, to serve as the head of the Cardiology Department of Menorah Medical Center. He is currently in solo practice and a member of several professional organizations. His wife Donna moved to Kansas City in 1985 with her late husband, Robert, who transferred to the city as CEO of DST Systems, and two of their three children — the eldest remained in Boston with his wife. Donna has served on a number of community boards including Harvesters and the Ronald McDonald House. She has also served on boards for a number of Jewish organizations including Jewish Family Services, the National Board of

Association of Jewish Family and Child Agencies, and the Kansas City Jewish Museum of Contemporary Art, where she continues as an active volunteer. Donna has also worked at the Center for Management Assistance (CMA) as volunteer professional assisting non-profits with Board Governance and Fund Development. Some of Lawrence’s interests include music, the Stock Market, and fine wine, and Donna’s interests include social services, especially those serving the elderly population such as seen at KCJMCA, art, books, and travel. Together, they also enjoy their family of seven children and 13 grandchildren!

A Letter from the President & Event Co -Chairs Welcome to our seventh annual UrbanSuburban Exhibition & Art Auction and the Kansas City Jewish Museum of Contemporary Art (KCJMCA) 20th anniversary celebration! Through the efforts of our dedicated volunteers and staff, we are delighted to present this evening of great art and delicious food at the Epsten Gallery. We are especially grateful to this year’s Honorary Chairs, Donna Gould Cohen and her husband Dr. Lawrence Cohen for their generosity and support of KCJMCA and for their philanthropy and support of great causes throughout Kansas City. We wish to give very special thanks and congratulations to KCJMCA founder Sybil Kahn, and we present this celebration in loving memory of Norman B. Kahn, for their efforts to establish KCJMCA and the Museum Without Walls program, which has had a tremendous impact on this organization and the community it continues to serve.

KCJMCA Board President Regina Kort

We would also like to congratulate KCJMCA Executive Director Eileen Garry on becoming Executive Director Emeritus upon her retirement this year, and we thank her for being one of the driving forces behind our success for the past 20 years. An important acknowledgment must also be made to our UrbanSuburban Patrons, sponsors, and participating artists whose contributions allow KCJMCA to continue doing its good work for the residents of Village Shalom and the whole community. We truly appreciate your support. We also wish to thank Village Shalom for providing an in-kind gift of space for KCJMCA and its programs, and to the residents, staff and extended family for their participation. We hope you have a great evening. Enjoy the food and the company, but most of all enjoy the art. A MUSEUM WITHOUT BOUNDARIES:

The Gift of Sybil & Norman Kahn

Established in 1991 under the innovative foresight of Norman and Sybil Kahn and a small group of dedicated founding members, the Kansas City Jewish Museum Foundation (renamed Kansas City Jewish Museum of Contemporary Art in 2010) was born with the belief that contemporary art with Jewish content could thrive outside the walls of traditional art venues in Kansas City. For ten years, Sybil, Norman, and their lead volunteer Eileen Garry presented museum-quality programs throughout Kansas City under the identity of Museum Without Walls. Then, from 1998-2000, the organization was invited to create and administer an exciting exhibition program inside the newly relocated Village Shalom. The Epsten Gallery of the Kansas City Jewish Museum of Contemporary Art (KCJMCA) was born, and Eileen Garry became its first full-time staff member as Executive Director. Although Museum Without Walls projects grew less frequent as KCJMCA found walls within Village Shalom, and the profile of the Epsten Gallery began to grow, the spirit of its effort remains rooted in Sybil and Norman’s initial effort. The catalyst for the Epsten Gallery’s rise and success over the past decade is due in some measure to Norman and Sybil. Like two interlocking links within an unbroken chain, Norman & Sybil Kahn and Robert & Jacqueline Epsten have paved the way for KCJMCA to reach a milestone in its existence. In 2011, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the birth of the Kansas City Jewish Museum of Contemporary Art and the gift that this organization represents to the community from Norman & Sybil Kahn. This year we have also celebrated the 20th anniversary of our Museum Without Walls program through partnerships with the Charlotte Street Foundation’s Urban Culture Project (The Dining Room Project), Kemper

Museum of Contemporary Art (Jewish Museum, New York Curator Norman Kleeblatt lecture), and Rockhurst University (Between Thee & Me). Our mission has been to provide innovative art exhibitions and related programming that engage seniors and diverse audiences from all segments of our community to enrich lives and celebrate our common humanity through art. In celebrating important milestones such as this, we hope to keep the Kansas City Jewish Museum of Contemporary Art at the forefront of both mind and effort – to bring contemporary art and Jewish culture to the whole community. Thank you Sybil! We honor the contributions that you have made to the community through our organization and we offer this celebration in loving memory of your late husband Norman B. Kahn (1918-2011). Sincerely, The Board and Staff of The Kansas City Jewish Museum of Contemporary Art

LESTER GOLDMAN A major presence in the Kansas City art world for nearly forty years, Lester Goldman was undeniably one of the most complex, experimental and consistently provocative artists of his era. His works are so intelligent and comprehensive they contain all of painting’s history without owing allegiance to any particular era. Goldman’s work is inspiring in it’s ability to convey a sense of sheer vitality, both painterly and intellectually. His paintings as well as sculptural assemblages are at once exuberant and playful, even when containing a darker subtext. Goldman’s great grandfather, a Russian immigrant of Jewish origin sold rags from a pushcart on the streets of New York to feed his family. This became the inspiration for “Rag Pusher” the premier painting from his 2001 solo exhibition “Welcome to the Rag Ball” (at the Joseph Nease Gallery). The painting features large biomorphic shapes and high key colors. The hectic clustering of fractured shapes at the lower right includes his signature black and white stripes. Goldman related the stripes to the concentration camp prisoners’ uniforms of World War II. See complete artwork information on page 32.

MARCI AYLWARD aylwardcarroll@sbcglobal.net

In life, color and light are what draws me. The endlessly changing land, sky, moving clouds, cast shadows and light is vital to life. The land has a constant and universal quality, evoking memories and triggering the senses. The experience of being out in the landscape is something that challenges me to capture and express the immediate response. Being exposed to great works of art is inspirational. Artists such as Corot and Constable have had an impact on the work that I do. After graduating from KCAI, attended Parsons School of Design in New York. Traveling, living, working and surviving in various environments helped guide my direction along the path I am presently taking.

KC from the North, 2011

Oil on Wood, 10x14” VALUE: $800

Having lived in large cities, I observed how nature was twisted and squeezed by a created environment. I have also observed that no matter how far you may be from civilization there is evidence of human impact on the landscape. My intention is to express how human made structures interact and impose on the landscape.

MARILYN HIGGINS

Asian Serving Bowl, 2011

Porcelain, glaze, 16.25x7.25x2.75” VALUE: $250

Inspiration gives birth to creativity…whether the inspiration comes from another person, a culture, or a spiritual calling; more fundamentally it comes from the expressive heart of the artist. I feel like the gentle quiet nature of the Asian culture is reflected in my work. I love the simplicity of form enhanced by the quiet black glaze or black and white; and the spontaneity of Shino glazes…each pot born to unpredictable effects of the firing. My work is a combination of several techniques. Using either porcelain or stoneware…I throw and alter, hand build, and sculpt; most often combining those processes in a single piece. Then they are fired in a gas kiln to cone 10. I have chosen to work with clay, as I find it reveals limitless possibilities and aesthetic integrity. I look toward growth in my work, as I continue to gain skill, knowledge and insight.

LINDA LIGHTON www.lindalighton.com lighton@earthlink.net

I agonize over the life I give my sculptures and how they will evolve into being through form and color. I believe their story may be told cogently and clearly by picking the right color, layering it and shining it into existence. The depth of a plum red, the languid pulsing of purple with blood and muscle underneath, the lofted softness of a creamy peach satin quilt, with just a bit of tartness – these are the colors, and their attendant emotions, that I try to achieve in my work.

Fold Over, 2009

Media mixed media on paper, 18x24” VALUE: $1,200

My recent work can be seen as a marriage of my continuing interest in architecture. Machinery, structure, tools, technical drawing, balance, visual relationships and man vs. nature, are some of my interests. These interests or experimentations aren’t logical, one foot in front of another algorithms, but are experiments with a good deal of jumping around. I allow myself to follow a scattered meandering path. The immense variation and possibility of visual opportunity definitely guides where my brush or pencil lands next. Process, is very important to me and makes simple routine and construction the backbone of what I do. My newer works are constructed out of Mylar pieces that are gritty, drawn, painted, cut and finally heat bonded together. Old media of graphite and new media of plastic together develop a relationship & cadence that seems to write it’s own story of mankind and the natural world.

We don’t look our age either.

Rose Stolowy, Centenarian, Village Shalom Resident

When it comes to graceful aging, we’ve had great inspiration. One hundred years. In life or business, it’s certainly a rare feat. So as our organization draws in on a century of service to the Kansas City area, we would like to thank the countless residents, families, donors, volunteers and staff who have helped to make Village Shalom what it is today. We couldn’t have done it without you.
