Dear Members, In a recent squash game, my competitive instincts overcame my civility, and on match ball I barged into my female opponent who was understandably upset. This was a timely reminder to me of the difficulty of practising what one preaches (see the end of my last message), and the need constantly to be on one’s guard, particularly in the heat of competition, and to acknowledge when we fall short. Lent has come at a good time. As the great German poet Goethe says: “Knowing is not enough; we must apply.

Willing is not enough; we must do.” (as recalled by Bruce Lee).

Following Ryan Campbell’s departure to the Netherlands, we are delighted to welcome Charlie Burke, the former head coach of the Hong Kong men’s and women’s cricket teams, to oversee our cricket and coaching, both at senior and junior level, and Scott McKechnie as our head player coach. Charlie brings with him a wealth of experience, and Scott impresses me as someone who lives and breathes cricket with a strong passion.

These are exciting times for the further development of cricket at KCC, building on the foundation laid by their predecessors, most recently by Ryan and his team of coaches. A warm welcome to them both!

Our mini-hockey tournament on 5th March was a great success, with approaching 650 young boys and girls participating. The organizing committee headed by Deepak Surtani, including a group of our lady players and parents, worked tirelessly in preparation for this event and deserve our heartiest thanks.

Thank you all! In the same breath we should put our hands together for our Ladies C team, who are Champions of the HKHA Women’s League 2016-17 in the 4th Division Championship.

and Danny Ho, representing Hong Kong last month, won gold in the Hengqin Mu Xiang Cup. Our accolades as well to Chadwick Chen who was the 2016 HK Men’s National Singles Champion and HK Bowler of the Year.

Later this month, on Thursday 27th April, we will be privileged to welcome the very popular and affable Tim Henman play in an exhibition tennis match and conduct a junior tennis clinic on our ground, as part of the Road to Wimbledon event, and there will also be a tennis tournament at Victoria Park for young tennis players to compete for the chance of a trip Wimbledon….. in the younger age groups. Do not miss this opportunity to see a great tennis player in action!

By now, two of our three tennis courts will be back in operation, with the third re-opening in mid-April. Considerable work has been done to repair the bases of the courts, and I trust that our players will now find the bounce of the balls to be fair and true.

My thanks to all who arranged, carried out and supervised this work.

On 1 st May we will again be having a May Day Carnival in conjunction with the St. George’s Society, with Morris dancing, dancing round the maypole, and many other activities. If you have an idea for an activity or would like to help with this lively event, please contact Jim Down, the chair of our Entertainment Sub-committee, or Venice Tang our Program and Events Manager.

Most importantly, I wish you and your families, and all of our staff, a very Happy Easter!

Dear Members, Easter this year will commence with Good Friday April 14 and Easter Sunday April 16. Venice has provided a number of activities to entertain the entire family with the egg hunt, face painting and balloon twisting. See inside front cover for more details. Reminders will be sent to the members via the WOK e-mail closer to the dates.

As you avid swimmers are aware, the swimming pool re-opened on April 3rd following two months of “spring cleaning”. During this closure we replaced the old sand filters with new filtration system. These new filters will keep the water sparkling clean all day. May I remind all members (and children) to please shower prior to entering any of the pools.

Are you ready for another BIG Quiz night? Back by popular demand, Clive Howard is busy preparing another of his excellent Quiz Nights in the Sports Hall! Get your team together and book a table for Friday April 28th. This is a very popular evening so book your table now to avoid disappointment. Start time is 7:30pm. If you are short of teammates don’t forget that guests are allowed or we can pair you up with others. E-mail Venice at events@kcc.org.hk if you need help.

Family Fun Day. This event was held last year for the first time and due to its overwhelming success it’s back again this year!

This family event and will be held on Monday May 1 st on the grounds. We will have all sorts of games and activities for the kids and parents to participate in and we will have the Royal Society of St. George’s HK here to perform a traditional May Pole dance.

Bouncy castles, Bubble Football and Game Stalls will keep you and the kids entertained all afternoon.

The annual Centenary Cup Horse Race at Shatin will be held on Sunday June 4th. The cost to attend is a Member $775/person and a Guest $875/person. This price includes pre-race cocktails at KCC, bus transportation, entry badge, buffet and unlimited house wines, house spirits, beers, soft drinks, tea and coffee.

We will also have raffle tickets on sale for some great prizes.

He Bats to the Left, he Keeps to the Right; that Ryan Campbell, he’s a Chum for Life

By Bimal Mirwani The Grand Slam of domestic titles, countless beers and memories to treasure forever. For those who came to know Kowloon Cricket Club head coach Ryan Campbell on a more social level, they will know exactly what I’m talking about.

Program and went on to play for the second XI of numerous English counties, including Kent, Durham, Gloucestershire, Essex, Notts and Durham. As if that wasn’t enough, he was even 12th man for England at one point!

But, even for those who know him more as a coach and authority figure at the club, they would no doubt say that he always put in the extra effort to help them take their game to the next level.

Burke, a Cricket Australia Level 3 coach, also comes to KCC with a strong pedigree behind him, as during his tenure as Cricket Hong Kong’s Director of Cricket, he led the Hong Kong team from 24th to as high as 10th in the Twenty20 International rankings.

Personally, he also contributed so much to the club and was the driving force behind the meteoric rise in junior cricket, whereby the number of registered juniors has skyrocketed from 50 to 118.

In addition, he was selected to the Premier League Team of the Year for four years in a row and was the Sunday League Batsman o f the Year on two occasions. Let’s also not forget the fact that Ryan will also leave behind a record that will be nearly impossible to beat – as he scored a mind-boggling, eye-popping and heartracing 303 not out in a Sunday League game, which is the highest score by a KCC player in history.

Many of us at KCC are still in utter disbelief that Ryan will be heading off into the sunset to join Netherlands as their head coach, but we all feel proud of the fact that we now know an international head coach!

As Ryan begins the next chapter of his coaching career halfway around the world, KCC have also begun ringing in the changes, as Scott McKechnie has been named as Ryan’s successor, while Cricket Hong Kong’s Director of Cricket Charlie Burke will join KCC under the same title.

McKechnie previously coached and played for Hong Kong Cricket Club, prior to which he was part of the MCC Young Cricketers

Before his stint with Cricket Hong Kong, Burke worked for the Western Australian Cricket Association ( WACA) and as the Regional Performance Manager for the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the East-Asia Pacific (EAP) region.

With the Camp -bell having tolled for the final time, KCC is sad to lose one of its greatest and most successful coaches in its long and distinguished history.

We wish you all the best in the Netherlands, Ryan – and don’t worry, our doors will always be open to you, along with the bottles of Little Creatures you demanded be served at the bar!

Introduction - Charlie Burke & Scott McKechnie Charlie Burke - Director of Cricket Charlie will further build on the success of recent years with development of all things cricket at KCC in particular the growth of all cricketers - Mens, Womens and Juniors, driving forward greater participation numbers, sustainable programs, education of coaching staff for continual improvement, strong management, quality competitions and to further develop us as the leading Cricket Club in Asia. As a passionate and highly skilled Coach, he will also be involved in coaching at the club on a day to day basis giving his vast experience to players and coaching staff alike.

Charlie will be known to many of you from his time in Hong Kong. He was appointed in 2010 as the National Coach here in HK and has lead the team to the most successful times in the nation’s history.

Scott McKechnie - Head Coach Scott joins us as Head Coach from Hong Kong Cricket Club, where he has been Coaching and playing since 2012.

Amongst his roles at HKCC saw him working with players of all standards as well as overseeing the Gappers juniors programme which currently facilitates cricket to almost 500 juniors each week. He has also been appointed as Head Coach for the Galaxy Gladiators Lantau for this year’s T20 Blitz.

Scott is an ECB Level 2 Coach and recently began the Cricket Australia Level 3 High Performance course which was hosted in October at KCC alongside cricketing legends such as Mike Hussey and Chris Rogers.

As well as being an exceptional coach, Scott is a highly-regarded Batsman and Wicket Keeper and we certainly have been witness to his skills over the years against us and will be delighted to have him play alongside us in future!

We are certainly delighted to have secured both of these exceptional talents to our great club and we are sure you will give them the usual KCC warm welcome when you see them around the club.

15th KCC Mini Hockey Festival

By Lisa Milliner A perfectly balmy day dawned for the annual Mini Hockey Festival, held on Sunday 5th March. Seventeen clubs came from all over Hong Kong to take part in the territory's biggest and best Mini Hockey Tournament!

KCC put forward a record number of players with a total of 9 teams, five of these being in U8s alone! And they all played admirably during their games, displaying good sportsmanship and keen participation.

KCC teams were also victorious on the day and were represented on the dais in every division. The U8 KCC E team (our very youngest and smallest players) were runner-up in the Division 3 Plate; the U10 KCC A team were runner-up in the Division 1 Cup; U12 KCC B were winners in the Division 2 Bowl; and U12 KCC A were winners in the Division 1 Cup. Special mention must be made to Harold Kwong from the U10 KCC A team, who was awarded "The Best Player of the Tournament" in U10 Division 1, and was also presented with "The Konnie Surtani Memorial Cup" for Best and Fairest Player of the tournament.

Congratulations Harold!

Not only is there lots of hockey at our MHF (with a total of nearly 200 games played throughout the day!) but also lots to keep the players and their families entertained: Face Painting, Tattoos, popcorn, cotton candy, Photo Booth, Lucky Draw and much more!

Their short corners were off target until close to half time, when they worked a shot into the corner. A swift counter attack saw a second goal added right on the stroke of half-time.

KCC BANGKOK TOUR “ Sing When You’re Winning”

If. as Shakespeare wrote, music is the food of love, play on – and don’t wait for the referee’s whistle. With more songs than La-la Land and more action than Manchester by the Sea (not difficult), the latest edition of the KCC Football Section Bangkok Tour had something for everyone. Everyone, that is, except this year’s winner of the Invisible Man award, whose identity is protected by the well-known “What doesn’t happen in Bangkok stays in Bangkok” protocol.

A strong contingent of first-time tourists and a good showing of KCC Legends (a delightful new name for the group formerly known as the Old Gronkers) meant that the management was able to select a strong (i.e., gronker-free) line-up for the first act of the tour: the Royal Bangkok Sports Club v KCC Interport match for the Bruno Ruegg trophy.

As usual, the RBSC pitch in the middle of the Bangkok racecourse was in fine condition, and it didn’t take long for the KCC to gallop into the lead, converting a re-bound from the ‘keeper.

With Ben “The Bursar’s Boy” Thomas leading from the back and new ‘keeper Zain repelling Thai thrusts with assorted parts of his anatomy, we held firm until half-time, Dan “Jacquesy” Jacques and George keeping the host’s defence honest in front of a hardworking midfield four.

A quick response from the hosts brought it back to 3:1, although they did not help their cause by attempting to head-butt Tulio Cerolini, who luckily has a small enough head to avoid any contact. A second goal in the 90th minute had us pulling up the armchairs and putting the kettle on as we went into added time, but the referee decided 4 minutes was enough, and history was made: for the first time the KCC had gone to Bangkok and retained the Bruno Ruegg trophy.

Yet 45 minutes on a large pitch take a toll, even when you are as well-rested as the boys were, and there was concern that the 1:0 lead would quickly evaporate in the heat of the Bangkok night as the second half got underway. The fact that Jacquesy had had his feet amputated by a challenge not deemed worthy of a whistle by the referee did not help.

But our hosts had other ideas, and underlined their reputation for hospitality by planting a firmly struck back-pass into their own net from 30 yards within seconds of the re-start. Then, 20 minutes later, a blatant pullback by the last defender on Jacquesy, who by now had had his feet re-attached, gave us a free-kick on the edge of the box, calmly executed by our guest for the evening Anthony “No Mates” Garreau – who was the picture of Gallic composure as the ball nestled in the back of the RBSC net like a Faberge egg.

At 3:0, the match was nearly won, but we had a feeling that if RBSC were to get a couple of goals we might

The euphoria dissipated over a lavish spread generously put on by the RBSC, especially after the first-time tourists meekly succumbed to our hosts in the all-important Boat Race. But the performance of the team boded well for the following two days, when three teams were entered into the RBSC International 7s tournament.

The first day of the tournament was remarkable for two things.

First, the stellar turn-out by the first-time tourists for the Knights’ first match - an 8:30 am kick-off. Unfortunately the other team not only turned up, but also brought 4 goals with them, without reply. The Knights were able to gain a good point in their second match before going down to another strong Thai side in their final group match, and retreating to the pool-side for a wellearned rest and restorative drinks named after British motorways.

Second, the goalkeeping displays of our stand-ins were allimportant, as first choice ‘keeper Dan Schick was injured and in a managerial role, whilst ninth choice ‘keeper Adrian Townson was unavailable and in the KCC snooker room. The Dragons played Luca “Il Capo” Merlone in goal and lost their first match. When Il Capo emerged to play out, they scored a convincing 3:0 victory, and progressed into the main competition the following day.

Meanwhile, with Gary “Expletive Deleted Patches” Luttrell in goal, the KCC Royals lost their first match heavily. But due to a lack of other options and the fact that Expletive Deleted Patches was having a Balotelli-like struggle with the goalkeeping jersey, management bravely persisted with the rangy old gronker (“Legend”, Ed.) and were vindicated when two goals from Marcel Sossnowski and a peach of a finish from Paul McGunnigle sent the Royals spinning to a 3:0 win and ultimately a place in the Veterans Plate competition.

Saturday evening saw a crowd of over 30 tour ists attend the team dinner and kangaroo court, presided over by the vicious and corrupt judge Jonny Mac, ably assisted by UN unaccredited translator David “Lloyd” Christmas. But the excitement of the big night was followed by a series of tired Sunday performances that saw all three teams bow out of their respective competitions by lunch-time, leaving Michael “Johno” Johnson to lift our spirits with tear-jerking ditties from his army days, and the supporting chorus to give stirring renditions of the Expletive Deleted Patches theme song and the hymn to The Bursar’s Boy. A musical treat for the tone deaf.

As ever, the tourists owed a debt to our excellent hosts, the RBSC, tireless tour organisers Jacquesy, the Bursar’s Boy and Raj Heera - who always gives more than 99% - and the slightly less tireless Shyam Nainani, section head and baritone, who led us on this historic tour. We await the return of RBSC to Hong Kong with keen anticipation, a gleaming trophy and a tuning fork.

KCC Young Women Team – League Update

By Adrian Townson, KCC Young Women’s Team Manager The Young Women’s Team have now played 4 matches in the HKFA League, beating both Tai Po and MLFA, and drawing with Citizen and Chelsea, who are currently the top 2 teams.

The goals so far have been spread around the team, with Sophie, Vanessa, Anna, Gabrielle all on target. Allyson has also kept 2 clean sheets so far, and only conceded 2 goals.

KCC currently lie 3 rd in the league level on points, with Citizen in 2nd place, separated only by 1 goal! Our next match is against STY, who currently lie in last position, and we hope to improve our goal difference!

KCC Colts (HKFA Leagues) – U16 & U18 Update

U18 HKFA Team In what is proving a tough season in the top division, the KCC U18 boys showed unbelievable resolve and commitment in their recent game against Tiger United. A squad hit with 3 suspensions and several injuries had to take to the field with 10 players. They were 2:1 down at half time.

Coach Destiny reorganised the boys defensively, to close the ball down quicker, and the compact KCC shape won the ball back more quickly to create more chances. After a thrilling second half the KCC ended up on the right side of a 7 goal fest, winning 4:3. Mr ‘Right Place Right Time’ Jahan Balani netted one goal – and hero of the day Joe Rabey bagged the other 3 goals in what must go down as the performance of the season.

U16 HKFA Team Despite the disruption to January’s games, caused by the issue of player registrations, the KCC got back in the groove this February, to maintain their attack on the division 2 title. In the first of 2 games, the KCC took on Tuen Mun with a heavily depleted squad. Two suspensions, an overseas trip plus a school concert had left Coach Chancy with a bare 11. In a game that swung from end to end, Chancy lost his voice and ended

up playing with a back 6 as the KCC held on to their precious 1:0 lead, given to them by Hartley Connell. Three points were secured, but not without Hartley succumbing to an Achilles injury.

The boys took that fighting spirit into their next game, and with a full squad Eastern District were swatted aside comfortably, 5:0. Nicholas Bremer and Alex Eckberg both slotted home, and James Francis bagged a hat-trick to take his personal tally for the season to 9 goals. The U16s still have a 100% record, and now go into the business end of the season yet to face title challengers Sham Shui Po and Tuen Mun. KCC Junior Football â&#x20AC;&#x201C; HKJFL U8s Tournament

The KCC U8s etched their place in history on Saturday 4 March, when they became the first KCC Boys junior team to win a HKJFL U8 Premiership trophy, emerging triumphant in the final U8 tournament of the season at Tung Chung YMCA school.

The U8s competition has been extremely competitive all season, and all participating te a m s h ave p l aye d to a h i g h l e ve l, whilst always demonstrating excellent sportsmanship. KCC, under the guidance of Coach Monty, found themselves in the Group of Death, being drawn with two APSS teams as well as UDAFC and Discovery Bay, who had incredibly been unbeaten in open play throughout the 2016/2017 season.

In the first match, KCC lost 2:1 to a very strong APSS 1 side, with Nathan Daniel scoring an excellent goal for KCC. Needing a win in the second game, KCC came up trumps, with two strikes from Cai McGunnigle in a 2:1 victory over UDAFC. The third match was a close fought 0:0 draw against Discovery Bay, who had seen their unbeaten run come to an end in an earlier fixture against APSS 3. Thomas Allen and Keiran Chia put in outstanding defensive displays in this match, and Lincoln Tsang performed admirably in midfield against such strong opponents.

Needing a vic tor y in the last group match to advance to the semifinals, the boys played excellent football and were re w a rd e d w i t h a n excellent 3:1 victory over APSS 3, thanks to a hat-trick from Cai. The third goal came about from excellent team play by Nathan and Eita Sato, with Eita's turn and pass to Cai being particularly impressive.

The semi final saw KCC up against AIFA. A battling performance by both teams ensured that they could not be separated in normal time, with KCC winning 2:0 in the penalty

shoot out after successful kicks from Nathan and Cai.

Asia Pacific Soccer School Sports Hall

The final was another end-to-end contest, as KCC emerged 1:0 winners over APSS 1, gaining revenge for the earlier defeat in the group stage. Cai got the winner after an excellent ball from Nathan. The boys were indebted to Maximilian Etter, who performed heroically in goals, twice saving excellently as APSS strived for the equaliser.

The boys were overjoyed at the end of the match, and were all praised by Coach Monty for their unstinting efforts throughout the competition. Cai, with 6 goals, was awarded Most Valuable Player on the day, but as Coach Monty rightly said it could have gone to any one of the 7 players who demonstrated great camaraderie and teamwork throughout the competition.

A huge vote of thanks should be given to Coach Monty for his outstanding coaching throughout the 2016/2017 season.

KCC Junior Boys – U10 HKJFL Update

HKFC recently hosted the 3rd round of the U10 HKJFL Championship. The KCC entered 2 teams as usual, coached by Destiny and Eddie in a couple of tricky groups. Team 2 finished level with ASA after they drew 1:1 thanks to a goal from player of the tournament Rafi Mithani. Both teams had identical records, and the KCC 2 progressed through the luck of the coin toss. Team 1 also joined team 2 in the Shield competition after a draw against HKFC and a

win against TTT 2, with goals from Tom Christmas, Shreenikat and Aiden Lee making the difference.

Into the semifinals, and team 2 battled hard but went down 1:0 to HKD 2. Team 1 fared better and dominated against APSS 5 to go through by the same score line, 1:0. KCC 1 then met the conquerors of team 2 in the final, HKD 2. A tight affair ended 0:0, and the KCC prevailed on penalties to win the Shield.

KCC Junior Boys – U11,12 & 13 HKJFL Update

Saturday 25 February saw a triple header as KCC played BFA at U11, U12 and U13s in the HKJFL. The U11s sadly saw their title push come to a halt, with a 4:0 defeat against a solid opposition who are now looking to challenge MLFA for the title. The U11s though have progressed steadily under Coach Ming this season, and should still see a top 4 finish in the Championship.

The U12s had recently picked up their first point of the season with a close fought 0:0 draw with Sun International. With renewed confidence, they went into their basement battle with BFA filled with belief that they could get their first win. In a cagey affair at Cherry Street, the KCC managed to come out on top 1:0, thanks to a battling man of the match performance from Shohn Fujita and a goal from Ysbrand Van Der Schans.

The game of the day was at Happy Valley, where a rapidly improving U13s went in pursuit of their first point of the season.

Things looked likely to unravel as the boys went 2:0 down through a sloppy goal from a corner and a penalty giving BFA the lead.

Last season’s top scorer, Brayden Lisboa, pulled a goal back from a well taken freekick and made it 2:1 at half time. The 2nd half swung back and forth, before Brayden broke through to strike again. Not satisfied with a point, the KCC kept attacking and after a m a s s i ve g o a l m o u t h scramble the ball fell to Ian Ishik awa, who stabbed the ball home with the last kick of the match for a 3:2 win.

Ladies A The A team had a rather good season and won Runnerup in the Premier League. They continue to play in the Triple League, which has a rather brief season from Dec 2016 to Mar 2017.

Our last game, on 4 March, we won 1 a 7 away at IRC; The Ladies A team is now in 5th position out of a total of 10 teams. The team will safely retain their position in Division 1.

In the current season, the team has made adjustments to their line up, and taken on one new player. Players are enjoying the season and cooperating well. Team spirit is high.

Players in Ladies A are Mable Chan, Michelle Poon, Rita Tsui, Mildred Wong, Sonia Chan, Sanie Ng, Anna Hamet, Maggie Lam, Tammy Tham, Candy Leung and Daphne DaRosa.

Rita Tsiu, Ladies A Team Captain Report on Men’s B At the beginning of the Triples League, the team was ranked in the middle of the table when the ‘B’oys have got some points at Home only. Even we performed well but we didn’t get expected results at Away matches. In result, we were struggling at lower portion of the table during last several games. At last we were facing the risk of relegation before the last match. At this moment, the ‘B’oys displayed our outstanding performance again and gained eight null at Home in the last match of the League. Ladies B The team has performed well in this winter’s Triple League. Our team members all strived to do their best during each game. In home games, every time we achieved good results, with the best one being 8:0 against our opponents. In away ones, the worst was our game at CdeR, where we lost 8:0 – but in the rest, we obtained at least 2 points. Although at the time of writing this report, there was the last game to be played, we could be pretty sure of staying in Division 3 for the coming year. I would like to thank all our team members for their hard work and good team spirit. Let’s maintain this positive momentum in the forthcoming Premier League.

Annual Squash AGM

The annual squash AGM was held on November 11, 2016, in the Sports Hall. Our final results from last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s league were outstanding, as an overwhelming number of teams finished the season on a high note. We were also successful in the 2016 Summer League, as Division 1 and 3 teams won their divisions.

On an international level, the KCC hosted a number of visiting teams. We had the pleasure of meeting and playing with the Indonesian and Korean national teams as well as a Malaysian team from Kuala Lumpur. We certainly hope our relationships with these teams, and more, will continue to thrive and develop in the years to come.

The KCC also hosted the Contrex Challenge Cup in March for a second year. This featured incredibly high calibre matches from both international and local players. KCC member Yeung Ho Wai entered the competition as a qualifier, and subsequently made it to the semi-finals - an excellent achievement for home-grown talent.

Our Masters also had the opportunity to play a tournament in Dalian, which was a great success. We have also been fortunate enough to continue our Interport matches between rival clubs HKCC and HKFC. No doubt these will continue to run throughout 2017 and beyond.

All in all, it was a very busy year for the section, and I am sure this one will be no different! KCCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s start to the season so far has been excellent; good luck to everyone in their upcoming matches and keep up the great work!

Avril is currently playing HKTA league matches in the Ladies A+ and Mixed Doubles for KCC. Her contributions are well received by her team members.

Our Mixed Doubles team – made up of Monte Wong (Captain) and Monique Cheung (Ass. Captain), Avril Look, Poon Shui Wing, Cindy Lee, Richard Fowler, Ki Yan Tung, Tom Reed, Janet Law, Hendrik Koerner, Lorraine Cheung, Gavin Suen, Jaime Sin, Hugo Wong, Eudice Chong, Lona Shiu, Howard Leung and Zhanel Kee – has performed superbly, and enjoyed a successful season by winning 5 matches, losing only 1, with just 1 of a total of 7 matches still to play.

As the line-up is strong and the team members are confident for the final match, it is very likely that our team will be the Champion in the Mixed Doubles in Division 1.

Our best wishes to the team for the final match; you will have the full support from all of us at KCC.

Tennis Courts Renovation Update

By Harry Yuen The repair and replacement works of the tennis courts surfaces commenced at Court 3 and Court 1 on 10th and 20 February, respectively, the work for Court 2 will commence on 1 March. The tentative completion dates are 20 April for Court 3, 30 for March Court 1 and 8 April for Court 2.

Upcoming Events

It was recently noted that the renovation work on Court 3 is progressing well, so the tentative completion day may be a little sooner than expected. The Subcommittee will continue to monitor the progress with renovation, and will keep you all informed on a regular basis.

Exhibition tennis match by Tim Henman will be held at KCC in April 2017. The event will include an exhibition match follow by a tennis clinic afterwards. The actual date of the event is to be advised shortly.

The renovation is for the benefit of the Tennis Section members, and any inconvenience caused to members during the renovation is regretted.

Wimbledon Fun Day will be held on Sunday 25 June 2017.

Super-sized with Supersets Superset is a great way to get the most out of your workout. It targets on training a set of agonists and antagonists in a workout. For example, by training triceps and biceps, it helps achieve balanced development of muscles. Two exercises focusing on agonists and antagonists are performed one after another with a little or no rest, as short rest intervals increase lactate production, reducing time to burn the same amount of Kilocalories. A routine blended with superset combinations floods the muscle with blood-laden oxygen and tissue-building nutrients, causing greater growth of the muscles.

Superset Exercises Examples: Upper Arm (Triceps and Biceps) Triceps: Rope triceps press down

Biceps: Barbell preacher curls

Hold the rope. Using the triceps, bring the rope down until each side of the rope is by the side of the thighs, arms are fully extended and perpendicular to the floor. Hold for a second, then bring the rope slowly up.

Grab the bar with palms facing forward. Use the biceps to curl the weight up until biceps are fully contracted and the bar is at shoulder height. Squeeze the biceps hard, and hold this position for a second.

Thighs (Quadriceps and Hamstrings): Quadriceps: Leg extension

Hamstring: Leg curls

Sit on the leg extension machine, adjust the sit and the weight.

Legs should form a 90-degree angle between the lower and upper leg. Then, using the quadriceps, extend the legs to the maximum.

Ensure that the rest of the body remains stationary on the seat.

Sit on the leg curls machine, adjust the sit, place the back of lower leg on top of the padded lever and secure the lap pad against your thighs, just above the knees. Pull the machine lever as far as possible to the back of your thighs by flexing at the knees.

Macau Trip

The wines were all locally sourced, and we were fortunate to have the President (Felipe Santos) and the Vice-President (Luis Heredia) of the Macau Wine Society to join us. The next day for lunch, we headed to a new restaurant: a tapas bar called Barcelona. This was in a discrete industrial location, but don’t let the façade fool you – the food and wine were tops. I will let the photos do the talking. However, it must be said that, by the end, each person had downed at least an equivalent of 2-bottles each and was standing straight!

On 18-19 February 2017, twenty-five members and guests – led by Mr. Prem Kumar – landed in Macau for a weekend of wining and dining, revisiting the excellent Portuguese restaurant from last year: the Mariazinha restaurant near the ruins of St. Paul.

Cellar Tastings Held on every 2nd Thursday of the month. Members can taste wines that are being selected for the wine list, as well as tasting some rare bottles found in the cellars. We hope through these tastings, your palate can be kept up-to-date with the revised wine-list and provide valuable feedback to the committee for future purchases.

Hole in One!!!

Round 3 of our league was played on 15 February, at Phoenix Hills Golf club in Dongguan. With the golf conditions much more playable then the previous meeting, we were looking forward to seeing some good results for the day. It was indeed a very enjoyable and fun afternoon for the 24 golfers who attended. Here are some of the highlights of the day.

The Main Highlight needs to be reserved for Leung Chi Wan, who hit a Hole in One on the 1st hole he played... He went on to complete his round with impressive golf, almost achieving a 2nd Hole in One, but finished off with a Birdie. Lady luck was certainly riding on the back of Leung Chi Wan.

Navin Mirpuri, in only his 2nd game of the KCC this season, played one of his better games in the league hitting 38 Stableford Points which included 5 pars and lots of bogeys. With Navin taking up golf Lessons, and working on his driving, he is looking forward to a fun season ahead, while getting more consistency from the driver to compliment his iron play and raise his game to another level. David Brettell also played a great game of golf, hitting hit 1 Birdie, 2 pars , 10 Bogeys to finish the day on 35 Stableford Points, which put him in a close second place for the day. With David's recent form in his last 3 great games - scoring 36, 36, 35, he is looking like a player with immense potential and can certainly be a main contender for this season's Champions Cup. Jacky Sung is starting to get more regular with the KCC Games... He managed to hit 2 Pars and 13 Bogeys, making him one of the more consistent players in the league as he ended with 34 Stableford points, earning him the 3rd spot.

We had 5 guests who qualified for a separate guests competition. Winners were Anthony Duncan for 1st place with 35 Points, and 2nd was Sunil Hemnani with 33 points.

We had 3 lady golfers this time out. Daphne Da Rosa had her debut game. Playing off a strong 21 handicap, she had a very decent round and ended with scoring 29 Stableford points. Mary Ching on the other hand seems like she is already stealing the show, with 2 strong finishes of 35 in each game.

Breaking News!!! Golf Simulator Challenge The Golf Simulator has been upgraded, with new competitions open, and its use complimentary for all KCC members. A golf school and lessons are also being discussed.

We have introduced a new competition for all KCC members to enjoy. As you are aware, we have a league meeting every month. Now, in addition, we will have a Stableford competition 2 weeks prior to our league game, at the Golf Simulator on the 2nd Floor (Games Room) at KCC. Winners of the competition will win $200 in cash credit, which can be used towards their next league game. So if the cost of play for the next game is HK$680 for a round of golf, the winner will be able to play his or her next game for only $480!

The format of play will be Stableford Competition. (Handicaps will be used, as per your league handicaps). In the 2 weeks the competition is running, you can play in it up to 2 times, and your better score will be recorded towards the race for the winner's spot. Rules for the games have been sent via email. You can play as an individual, or even create a group of friends to play. Each group can be up to 4-6 ball. (Refer to the email with rules). Close to Pin Competitions on all Par 3s. Prizes for winners. If you are interested in taking part, please call the Club's Sport's Centre to make a booking.

On Tuesday February 21, a special pairs tournament was held at KCC, to compete for the Dr David Mok Trophy â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a new trophy donated by Dr Ronald Tan for his appreciation of Davidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contributions to bridge in KCC spanning over 25 years.

Eighteen pairs participated in an evening of exciting matches. The winners were Bacon Lam and S Y Ho. Dr David Mok and Anderson Chow came second, with third place going to C Y Ng and Francis Lo. Many interesting hands came up. Of the 27 boards played, there were 5 makeable slams, three of which were grand slams. Board 23 was made on a major suits squeeze, which developed on cashing the minor suits.

It is always a pleasure to see our younger members excel and learn about their achievements.

Congratulations indeed, Olivia and Sebastian!

Two of our young Table Tennis Section members, 11-year old twins Olivia Mal: and Sebastian Mak, took part in the Kowloon North Area Inter-Primary School Table Tennis Competition in February 2017.

Despite facing formidable opponents, both players did very well, not dropping a single set from heats to finals.

They helped their schools – Maryknoll Convent School (Primary Section) and La Salle Primary School – win the Girls’ A Grade and Boys’ A Grade championships, respectively.

The lovely twins often play with Section members (both the young and the not-tooyoung) in practice sessions and internal competitions.

They very much enjoy representing the Club in friendly games and other matches.

In the last few months, there have hardly been any friendly or league games. However, our events coordinator, Anne Kwok, has arranged an away game against MTRC in Kowloon Bay on the 31 March.

So far, there have been a lot of enthusiastic players practicing on Monday and Thursday mornings, Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoon (providing we are able to book the Sports Hall).

The Ping Pong Machine is normally set up on Thursdays, and is being used by quite a few society members. There are quite a lot of talented players who turn up at times, and we hope they will eventually be regulars. We need good players to participate in the Hong Kong Table Tennis League and friendly games.

In-House Tournaments in the Sanctuary

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a busy month in the Sanctuary....

The Dutch Doubles has now been played. Adrian and Bennie took on Ivan and Don Poon in the final, which was a marathon event with 3 frames taking two and a half hours! Ivan and Don took the first frame, but Adrian and Bennie came back and took the 2nd. In the decider it was neck and neck all the way, ending up on the black ball, with only 2 points between the teams. Ivan, who had been a cool customer all night, took on a difficult black along the top cushion, and was rewarded for his bravery! A good match worthy of a final, and well done to Ivan and Don!

SNOOKER

The Peter Austin Tournament is now underway, with 12 players signed up. After the group stages the players will split into the Trophy, Bowl and Plate. Good luck to everyone who has entered.

The snooker ladder competition has now also commenced, after a final tweaking of the rules and the draw for the starting positions. This will provide an excellent opportunity for our members to enjoy competitive matches between club matches, tournaments and other friendlies.

Inter-Club League 2017

The 1 Inter-Club Match will be in late March, against the defending Champions, the Kowloon Tong Club. Bennie Ngan is the KCC Captain and will select the team from all available players.

Friendly Matches KCC will host the Royal Bangkok Sporting Club in the Sanctuary in mid-March.

It should be a great evening of snooker, followed by some good old KCC hospitality, and we look forward to reporting back in the next edition of the WOK!
