Bruins giving back at Binder Park Zoo DAYNA ALLEN

Bruins Give Back is an event hosted by the Service-Learning department that occurs three times each semester. The purpose of the event is to provide students, staff, and faculty with opportunities to volunteer in the community. Bruins Give Back is a beneficial way to get to know non-profit organizations in the Battle Creek area as well as meet fellow KCC students and build relationships with staff members. Bruins Give Back provides the opportunity for students to earn volunteer hours that can be use on job applications, scholarship applications, and resumes. The second Bruin Gives Back of the spring 2018 semester took place on Friday, March 16 at Binder Park Zoo from 9am-noon. Fifteen volunteers from KCC attended and approximately$1,080.00 of work was given to the zoo. Volunteers served in the children’s area where they raked leaved, cleared brush, and prepared the area for the animals and the zoo’s opening season. The next, and final, event of the semester is on April 20 from 9am-noon on campus in the KCC YES! Community Garden. Volunteers will be planting seeds, laying dirt, painting signs, organizing bricks, and simply making the garden more appealing for spring (no gardening experience is necessary). To register for the April Bruins Give Back, find the registration link on the Service-Learning website at kellogg.edu/service-learning under the “Special Service Events” tab or find the registration link on

the Facebook page, Kellogg Community College Service-Learning. All volunteers receive a free t-shirt. Questions, comments or concerns? Email kccservicelearning@gmail.com or visit the Service-Learning office in the Social Science department. Contact Dayna Allen at bruin@kellogg.edu

Letter to the editor KCC Women’s Basketball As one of the six planners of the group that put up the “write a cat call” posters, I would like to tell you the real intent of our project as some students have misinterpreted it. We never meant to disrespect women. We wanted to bring awareness to the effects of cat calling, sexual harassment, domestic abuse, and sexual abuse. Cat calling and sexual harassment can cause anxiety, depression, loss of confidence, disordered eating, and loss of productivity. We had a table set up and we handed out pamphlets with domestic abuse and sexual abuse hotlines, informational sheets on the Circle6 app that “prevents violence before it happens,” and a paper describing the theme for this year’s women’s history month and included this year’s honorees. In no way did we want to disrespect women, we wanted more people to respect women after seeing our posters. The posters were also meant for women to tell their stories of cat calling or sexual harassment. In response to the conversation that occurred regarding the posters, this was definitely a

learning experience for all of us, including the students and staff here. We all learned that not everyone thinks like we do and sometimes people are unintentionally hurt. In further events, informational posters will be put up explaining what the project means because when we were not there, we were not able to describe what the posters were for. I hope that some people took away from these posters that cat-calling is disrespectful, and that it is never acceptable. This was a leadership project done as a part of our scholarship requirements. A leader has many responsibilities. A leader must show others things that they might not have known about before. Leaders also bring new experiences and new conversations to those that follow them. With this event, we never expected it to gain as much attention as it did, but as leaders, we lead members of our college community to have a discussion about a topic that is not talked about enough.

signs Emma Samson YASMEEN QAHWASH editor

Emma Samson, of Elsie, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play women’s basketball at Kellogg Community College and will begin playing for the Bruins next season. Samson, a senior at Ovid-Elsie High School, was captain of her high school basketball team and earned high school basketball honors including Most Valuable Player and Honorable Mention All-conference. She has also earned several awards as a player and a captain on her high school tennis and volleyball teams. A Top 10 Division II equestrian rider, Samson is a member of the Future Farmers of America and participates in 4-H.

“I’m really looking forward to having Emma be part of what we’re building here at KCC and helping us put Lady Bruin basketball on top,” head coach of KCC’s women’s basketball team, Dic Doumanian, stated. KCC’s women’s basketball team finished the 2017-18 season late last month. It was the first season in nearly a decade under new Head Coach Doumanian, who led the Bruins for seven seasons from 2000-01 and 2006-07.
