Is your personality the result of the chronological place in your family? Psychologists have had theories on the issue of birth order for decades, and this week, Tidbits studies up on their findings. Follow along and see if you agree with their conclusions! • Renowned Austrian psychiatrist Alfred Adler was a pioneer in the area of birth order in the early 1900s, and was one of the first to present theories that family placement affects personality and how individuals deal with life’s issues. He believed that parents tend to treat children differently based on the order of birth. • Adler’s theory maintained that first-born children receive an abundance of attention, but only until the second child is born. When a new baby arrives, the first-born may feel unloved, believing he or she has lost the mother’s love to the new baby. Adler called this being “dethroned,” and claimed it had a lasting effect on the individual. The loss of attention might cause the first child to become fearful, high-achieving, anxious, or competitive. He might have a need to retain praise from parents and become prone to perfectionism, making him vulnerable to stress. …turn the page for more

BIRTH ORDER (continued): • The accomplishments of the first-born, such as walking and talking, are monumental in the eyes of parents and the child is pushed to achieve at a faster pace. First-time parents worry if the child isn’t advancing as they expect and might pressure for success. Parents might push the child to carry out the dreams they had for themselves, and are often harder on first-borns. • Because first-borns often feel the need to be perfect in everything they do, they are usually well-organized, goal-oriented, and respectful of rules. Firstborns tend to become people pleasers, ambitious, and aggressive. • First-borns dominate the list of Nobel Prize winners, National Merit scholars, and astronauts. A few famous first-borns are Winston Churchill, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, and Harry Truman. • When a second child arrives, the first-born often becomes the “helper.” This results in a desire to protect and lead, and they become nurturers and caretakers. • The behavior of a middle child is often the result of the fact that they have never been “in the spotlight.” Their older sibling seems to be forging ahead with achievements while the younger one is the “entertainer” of the family, making the middle-born feel upstaged, left out, and insecure. The middle child often tries hard to be different from the older sibling. Because they sometimes feel ignored, they branch out on their own, becoming mentally tough and independent. They develop good social skills as a result, and often turn to their peer group rather than family for support. • Adler believed that middle children are more cooperative because they’ve grown up sharing attention. This also makes them more flexible and diplomatic, (continued on page 4)

By Sam Mazzotta Dog Can’t Seem to Quench Thirst Dear Paws Corner: My golden retriever mix, “Benny,” seems to be drinking a lot more water lately. Every time we’re near a water dish or a running tap he is lapping water like crazy. This doesn’t seem normal, even though the weather is now much warmer. What could be wrong? -- Lane Y., Columbia, Md. Dear Lane: While it could just be excess thirst due to the hot weather, anytime you feel something is not right with your pet, you should act on that feeling. I recommend taking Benny in to see the veterinarian as soon as possible. A number of health issues can cause excessive water drinking among dogs and cats. I’m not going to speculate about Benny’s health, because he could be just fine. Diseases like diabetes can make pets thirsty, as can emergencies like bloat (which can occur in dogs that eat too much at once, and must be dealt with immediately by a veterinarian). A number of other conditions can cause excessive thirst, too. The vet will check for any immediate causes of con-

You may want to keep a journal -- carry around a small notebook or use your smartphone’s note-taking app -- to jot down the time and place that Benny takes a drink and how long he drinks. You also might want to note any changes in Benny’s coat, his behavior (overly excited or lethargic), or even if everything seems normal. If Benny’s excessive drinking continues or worsens, his overall condition worsens or if you still just don’t feel right about how things are going, contact the vet again to continue testing and monitoring him. :) When Honey Isn’t No matter what we do to keep our families safe, we can’t cover all bases all the time ... especially when there are dangers in the food

supply. Example: Honey is supposed to contain the pollen from where it was harvested. If nothing else, that pollen helps investigators trace the honey back to the source if there is a contamination. During any filtering process, harmful additions can be made to the pure product the bees made for us. According to Food Safety News, the Food and Drug Administration says that filtered honey isn’t really honey ... but that no one is checking. Go online to FoodSafetyNews.com for a long list of honey brands that don’t contain any pollen at all. FSN conducted tests

on honey sold all over the U.S. as a follow-up to its original research. That first round of testing revealed that the 27 countries of the European Union banned shipments of honey from India because it contained animal antibiotics and lead, and likely was shipped to India from China, where the product might contain only a tiny amount of actual honey. That same honey is sent to the U.S. by the millions of pounds with little oversight by U.S. Department of Agriculture officials. To check other foods, go online to FoodFraud.org. Put some of the foods you commonly eat into the search box to get lists of foods that might not be what you think they are. Click the little X to the left of each item for the research that revealed the food fraud. Here are a few other foods to watch: When you buy a can of tuna, is it really tuna? Or has escolar been mixed in or swapped? Escolar can cause serious intestinal problems.

If your orange juice is cloudy, it might be an unhealthy filler to deceive you into thinking it’s the pulp. Milk, coffee, tea and even black pepper are on the top10 list of foods associated with food fraud, according to Mercola.com. Best bets: Do as much of your grocery shopping as possible at local vendors and farmers markets. Ask questions. Buy whole foods instead of mixes or prepared foods. With whole foods you can tell whether something else has been mixed in. skills that allow them to thrive in business. The middles are also frequently good at peacemaking and negotiating – they’re good at seeing both sides of an issue! Fifty-two percent of U.S. presidents were middle children. • Because parents start to relax by the second child and become less demanding, middle children tend to have a more relaxed attitude toward life than their older sibling. Some famous middles include David Letterman, Richard Nixon, Madonna, and Princess Diana. • A recent study indicates that first-born children receive about 3,000 hours more time with parents between age 4 and 13 than their younger siblings. Perhaps this is why first-borns are more pressured to succeed, as parents “loosen up” as more children arrive. Parents also spend less time with each arriving child because they get more proficient at child-rearing tasks. • The baby of the family is often more pampered than his older siblings. Adler believed this was one of the worst actions of a parent, leading to dependence, selfishness, and irresponsibility. He theorized that babied children easily become manipulative and temperamental. The youngest child often gets more attention because the older children have grown to different developmental stages and are somewhat independent. • The baby of the family is often the entertainer or the charmer and likes being in the limelight. He is more carefree and affectionate, and has a good sense of humor, but usually seems to be more rebellious than his older siblings. • The baby tends to be less responsible and more adventurous, taking part in risky activities and aggressive sports. He is the daredevil of the family. A recent study points out that those major league baseball players who are the youngest are 10 times more likely to steal bases than first-born players. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a good week to look at healing bruised feelings and re-establishing weakened relationships. It’s also a good week to start new projects and make new job-linked contacts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Music and art dominate the week, giving the sensual Bovine a lot to appreciate. On the practical side, deal firmly, but fairly, with those who might try to undermine your work efforts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Good feelings continue to flow from your recent efforts to reconnect with family and friends. But be ready to defuse a dispute before it can disrupt all that peace and harmony. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A practical view of a romanticized situation could help to clarify some of its more confusing aspects before you make a decision that could be tough to undo later on. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Pay more attention to what a recent spate of workplace criticism might say about your performance and not what you think it implies about you personally. Some flexibility might be called for. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With new information, and new promises of support (not to mention growing self-confidence), this could be a good time to restart a project you couldn’t quite handle before. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Before you decide to close down a problem-loaded project and make a fresh start with someone else, try once more to reach a compromise with your balky partner. He or she might

surprise you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While you continue earning points for your sharp negotiating skills, be alert for an attempt to undercut your efforts. You’ll need to provide solid facts and figures to stay in the game. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A minor health problem might cause you to ease up on your usually busy schedule. But you’ll soon be back in the saddle and ready to pick up the reins and charge ahead. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The adventurous Sea Goat might be eager to take on a new challenge. But before you do, you might want to take some time to check out previously overlooked factors. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A feeling of being overwhelmed by all that you have to do can be eased by setting priorities. Deal with the most urgent and time-sensitive situations first, and then work down the line. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Creating a calm, peaceful place for yourself in the middle of a roiling emotional whirlpool this week starts when you, and no one else, decide how to make decisions about your life. BORN THIS WEEK: Your determination to stick with your principles wins the admiration of everyone who knows you. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

• On May 14, 1796, Edward Jenner, an English country doctor from Gloucestershire, administers the world’s first vaccination as a preventive treatment for smallpox by scratching the fluid from cowpox into the skin of an 8-year-old boy. The disease had killed millions of people over the centuries. • On May 17, 1885, for the second time in two years, the Apache chief Geronimo breaks out of an Arizona reservation. A famous medicine man and the leader of the Chiricahua Apache, Geronimo achieved national fame by being the last American Indian to surrender formally to the United States. • On May 15, 1942, Lt. Ronald Reagan, a cavalry officer, applies for reassignment to the Army Air Force, where he would eventually put his thespian background to use on World War II propaganda films. Reagan was given a job in the First Motion Picture Unit. • On May 13, 1958, during a goodwill trip through Latin America, Vice President Richard Nixon’s car is attacked by an angry crowd in Caracas, Venezuela. The trip began with some controversy, as Nixon had engaged in loud and bitter debates with student groups during his travels through Peru and Uruguay. • On May 12, 1963, Bob Dylan walks out of what was to be his first appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” He had previewed “Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid Blues” for Sullivan, who’d approved it days before. But the CBS Standards and Practices department equated the John Birch Society’s views with those of Adolf Hitler. • On May 16, 1975, Japanese mountaineer Junko Tabei becomes the first woman to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. Located in the central Himalayas, Everest stands 29,035 feet above sea level. In 1988, Stacy Allison became the first American woman to successfully climb Everest. • On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens, a volcanic peak in southwestern Washington, erupts, killing 57 people and devastating some 210 square miles of wilderness. The lateral blast leveled nearly all vegetation for as far as 12 miles away.

Vietnam Vets File Suit Over PTSD Aided by the Yale Law School Veterans Legal Service Clinic, a handful of Vietnam veterans with PTSD filed suit in U.S. District Court in Connecticut alleging that the military didn’t upgrade their discharges when it should have. Over the years, less than 5 percent of requests for upgrade have been given. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder didn’t have a name back when these veterans were in Vietnam. That only came about in 1980. Various wars have called it “shell shock” and “combat exhaustion.” During the Vietnam War, they were calling it “stress response syndrome.” Doctors thought it was caused by “response” and would go away, and if it lasted too long, it must have been pre-existing. What no one took into consideration back then was that there was a reason for the behaviors of veterans with PTSD, which included being absent without leave, drug use, hyper-vigilance, the inability to carry out duties, altercations and blackouts. Once PTSD had a name, and its symptoms and accompanying behaviors recognized, those undesirable discharges should have been upgraded for tens of thousands of veterans.

The veterans in the class-action lawsuit all had been given other-than-honorable discharges, which has followed them since then, bringing a lack of correct medical care, unemployment, homelessness and damaged relationships, as well as years of anxiety. This lawsuit is similar to a 2008 lawsuit (Sabo vs. United States) that was filed for veterans who’d served in Iraq and Afghanistan. In those cases, veterans with PTSD only rated a 10 percent disability (when it should have been 50 percent after 2002), and the veterans therefore were denied benefits. To read the lawsuit, search online for Case 3:14-cv00260 in the U.S. District Court in Connecticut. By Samantha Mazzotta Mom’s Porch Swing Showing Its Age

Q: My mother’s house has an old wooden swing on the front porch that we enjoyed as kids. But it doesn’t look very safe anymore -- the wood seems to be rotting, the paint has mostly peeled off, and it doesn’t swing straight. Is it worth convincing her to replace it? -- David H., via email A: That depends on a couple of factors, besides convincing your mom to let you replace it. One, is there enough interest among the family to continue to have a porch swing? And two, is the porch structurally sound enough to safely put up a new swing? The reason I ask is that older homes, while probably pretty sturdy, may have developed hidden problems structural“I’ve put in almost as much time studying hockey as a medical student puts in studying medicine.” • No NHL player will ever wear a jersey with the number 99 again. Gretzky’s jersey has been retired leaguewide, the only player to be honored as such. • “You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky

OH, MY!

Fans of the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz will recognize the familiar phrase, “Lions and tigers and bears, oh, my!” uttered by Dorothy. Here is some interesting info about each of Dorothy’s fears. • Lions are found primarily in Africa, from the southern border of the Sahara down to South Africa. Although we often refer to lions as “King of the Jungle,” they actually dwell in a prairie grassland habitat. They’re the second in size of the “big cats,” after tigers. A male lion is about 10 feet (3 m) in length, usually weighing between 330 and 550 lbs. (150-250 kg). Its tail adds another 2 or 3 feet (0.6 – 1 m) to its length. At its shoulder, an adult lion stands nearly 4 feet (1.2 m) tall. Its roar can be heard nearly 5 miles (8 km) away. • The cats live in groups called prides, surprisingly, usually led by the females. A pride might have as many as 40 lions, and the females stay in their mother’s pride their entire lives. • A lion’s diet is most large animals, such as zebras and wildebeests. The females are the primary hunters in the pride. • Very vulnerable to extinction, there are only about 3,200 tigers existing in the wild today. In just over 100 years, the world has lost 97% of its wild tigers. • Whereas the lion is a social animal, tigers are solitary and typically hunt alone. They are massive animals, with the male Siberian tigers weighing up to 660 lbs. (continued on page 10)

ly. Porches usually are built outside any load-bearing points and so don’t present a threat to the house itself, but they are sometimes built with less-durable materials and therefore deteriorate faster. There’s nothing more embarrassing than putting up a sturdy, heavy porch swing only to have to anchor bolts tear out of a rotting beam, dumping out the swing’s occupants. Have a construction professional who specializes in outside attachments like decks and porches inspect and evaluate the condition of the porch. Tell him your plans to replace the swing and ask about the best places from which to anchor it. Another option: If the porch doesn’t check out, or if you or your mom simply don’t want a swing on the porch, try a freestanding swing in the yard. Again, look for a sturdy, durable model with good supports that will stand up to outdoor weather for several years. HOME TIP: Want to paint a wooden porch swing? Be sure to use exterior grade paint or paint specially formulated for outdoor porches. Send your questions or home tips to ask@ thisisahammer.com. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOLLYWOOD -- Meryl Streep’s newest challenge is playing Emmeline Pankhurst. Who is Emmeline Pankhurst, you ask? Born in 1858, she was the leader of the British suffragette movement who helped women win the right to vote. In 1999, Time Magazine named her one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th century because, “She shook society into a new pattern from which there could be no going back.” “Suffragette,” which also stars Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter, is the first film ever granted the right to shoot in The Palace of Westminster at the Houses of Parliament in the United Kingdom. It will be released early next year. *** It looks like Brad Pitt is about to sign on as star for the second season of HBO’s “True Detective.” Matthew McConaughey completed filming the first season of the highly rated series prior to winning his Oscar and is headed for greener pastures, and it’s not likely that Woody Harrelson will re-

turn either. A female star is being sought to co-star with Pitt should he sign on. Producers are trying to switch up the storylines regularly, as they do every season on “American Horror Story.” Oscar-winner Billy Bob Thornton (“Sling Blade”) is counting on the new FX series “Fargo” to be a hit. So far, ratings have been good for the continuation of the popular Coen Brothers movie, which won an Oscar for Frances McDormand. Billy Bob still is recovering from his last effort, “Jayne Mansfield’s Car,” which he wrote, directed and starred in with Robert Duvall, Kevin Bacon, John Hurt, Tippi Hedren and Robert Patrick. Despite that great cast, the film, released last September, only managed to take in $14,836 at the box office. Hopefully, the cast will attract fans to buy the DVD. Hugh Jackman will hit the talkshow trail soon to promote the May 23 release of “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” But not before he completes work on his newest film, Neill Blomkamp’s “Chappie” with Sigourney Weaver, in which Jackman’s main co-star is

But you probably don’t know what song they were playing at the very end. Incensed, Rybcyznski kicked the guard and landed himself in jail. • Pigeons have the distinction of being only birds that don’t have to raise their heads to swallow when they drink water. *** Thought for the Day: “Luck is the residue of design.” -- Branch Rickey

OH, MY! (continued) (300 kg). When their prey is bagged, the tiger might eat up to 88 lbs. (40 kg) of meat at one time. Their large size doesn’t slow them down, however, as tigers can reach a running speed of up to 40 mph (65 km/hr) and can swim distances of up to 3.7 miles (6 km). • White tigers are extremely rare, carrying a gene that is present in just one out of every 10,000 tigers. • There are eight different species of bears, including brown, black, polar, and pandas. Brown bears are the largest of all, and can weigh up to 2,200 lbs. (998 kg). Polar bears are the second largest species, weighing about 1,500 lbs. (680 kg), and measuring up to 10 feet (3 m) long. Their thick white coat has nearly 9,700 hairs per square inch. Diet consists mainly of seals and walruses. A polar bear can track down an odor from 20 miles (32 km) away, and can detect a dead seal under 3 feet (0.9 m) of solid ice. Once it captures its prey, the polar bear’s stomach can hold 150 lbs. (68 kg) of meat. • About 1,000 to 2,000 giant pandas live in the wilds of China today. At birth, the cub weighs just 5 oz. (150 g.), but will grow to about 330 lbs. (150 kg). Its diet is almost entirely bamboo, about 45 lbs. (20.4 kg) a day. • It’s not wise to try to out-run a bear. Some bears can run up to 40 mph (64 km/hr). Compare this to the pace of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, the fast human alive, who can run 27 mph (43.5 km/hr.).

DVDs reviewed in this column will be available in stores the week of May 12, 2014. PHOTO: Joaquin Phoenix in “Her” PICKS OF THE WEEK “Her” (R) -- In the nearish future, computers become so adept at human interaction that it’s hard to tell the difference between a machine and a real personality. Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) is a lonely, divorced writer who falls in love with the operating system of his new computer. To be fair, Sam -- as the software is called -- knows every intimate detail of Theodore’s online life, she reads his emails, loves his sense of humor, asks thoughtful questions ... and she’s voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Writer/director Spike Jonze (“Adaptation,” “Being John Malkovich”) took home both the Oscar and Golden Globe for best original screenplay because of “Her.” The film uses the wacky premise to get at the heart of bigger ideas about how we relate to technology, and how love works between humans. “That Awkward Moment” (R) -- This is one of those romantic comedies where the characters are adults, but all of the jokes and commentary were clearly designed by adolescents. Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller play a trio of buds in their mid-20s, just pallin’ around New York City, picking up chicks, cracking (lame) jokes and dodging emotional entanglements. This movie would be hilarious as a parody of the shallow lessons taught by romcoms, but that’s not how it tries to be funny -- instead you get a recurring bit about how one of the guys always leaves a smell in the bathroom. “Generation Iron” (PG-13) -- The Mr. Olympia bodybuilding competition draws contenders from all over

Page 11 the world, and it was the stage that helped make Arnold Schwarzenegger into a superstar. The highest level of competitive bodybuilding demands an amazing level of skill and commitment. This documentary follows seven contestants in the 2013 Mr. Olympia as they forge their muscles and discuss what drives them. Narrated by Mickey Rourke, the movie finds what makes bodybuilding such a unique world. DOG OF THE WEEK “I Frankenstein” (PG-13) -- After years colorless crap about vampires, zombies, werewolves and every tired ghoul in between, Hollywood now has to retire the “Monster Reboot” strategy. It goes like this: Dig up an old monster and make the story “gritty” or “young adult” without any regard for what made the source material great. Now, Frankenstein’s monster (Aaron Eckhart) has been resurrected into a pulpy gray world where he punches animated demons. The Monster now goes by “Adam Frankenstein,” for, you know, forms and stuff. He has survived into the modern era, and he’s become instrumental in a never-ending war between good gargoyles and bad demons. Eckhart is totally committed to his grimacing, but it’s not enough to save this humorless clone of the tapped-out “Underworld” franchise. The Light Side Of Hydrating

Tire Maintenance Is Key To Safe Summer Driving (NAPS)—Tires are the only thing between you and the road, so it’s imperative motorists stay on top of tire maintenance. Proper tire maintenance is important all year, but especially in the summer months as the temperature starts heating up and the frequency of tire blowouts increases. Improper tire care contributes to 195 fatalities and 6,300 injuries each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The agency also estimates that about 11,000 tire-related crashes occur annually. Simply checking your tire pressure can help you and your passengers stay safe during your next summer journey. To get the most from your tires this summer, here are five maintenance tips from the world’s largest independent tire and wheel retailer—Discount Tire: 1. Get Pressure Right— Low tire pressure can decrease fuel economy. Tires may lose up to one pound PSI (per square inch) of air pressure per month. The specific inflation pressure number may be found on the vehicle placard located inside the driver’s door. Don’t forget those trailer tires. Checking the tire pressure for boat, travel and utility trailers is as important as your car or truck. 2. Don’t Overload—Overloading your vehicle or trailer decreases fuel economy due to increased cargo weight. Handling, control and braking are also negatively impacted. 3. Rotate Before You Go—Regular rotation helps achieve uniform tire wear and improves road performance. Tires rotated every 5,000 miles have longer life and will help maximize your tire investment. 4. Straighten Up—Proper wheel alignment provides safe, predictable vehicle control and helps tires wear evenly and last longer. If your tires squeal when you turn or if you notice your steering wheel veers to one

side while driving straight, it’s time to get your wheels re-aligned. 5. Bald Isn’t Beautiful—Lack of tread affects the tire’s ability to grip the road, especially in wet conditions. Make sure tires don’t have uneven wear, which indicates something is wrong with the tire. High or low spots or unusually smooth areas may decrease traction and increase the risk of road accidents. “Maintaining tire pressure is one of the most critical things motorists can do to improve road safety while getting the most from their tires,” said Mark Marrufo of Discount Tire. “Improperly inflated tires lead to decreased steering and braking control as well as excessive tire wear and fuel consumption. Taking five minutes each month to inspect your tires will go a long way in keeping you and your passengers safe.” A Five-Minute Fix Checking tire pressure and tread is easy and can pay dividends when it comes to fuel economy and handling. Don’t go by appearances. Use a tire gauge to check the pressure since a tire can be 50 percent underinflated but still not appear flat. Make it a habit to check tire pressure every month and always before a long journey. Use the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure and don’t forget to check the spare and trailer tires. “Most people forget to check the pressure in the spare tire and come to find that when they need it, the spare is flat,” said Marrufo. “This simple check could keep you from a costly tow if you get stuck with a flat.” Road trippers should also check tire tread depth by using the “penny test.” Insert a penny upside down into the tread. If you see Abe Lincoln’s entire head, it’s time to replace the tire.

(NAPS)—Good news for the estimated one in three women with dry or dehydrated skin: Scientists have discovered some simple solutions. While skin that’s merely dry is uncomfortable, when skin suffers from dehydration, moisture is lost rapidly. Skin feels tight and looks dry, flaky and aged, as premature lines and wrinkles appear more prominent. Explains Dr. Adam Geyer, consulting dermatologist for Kiehl’s Since 1851, “Very dry skin is characterized by a lack of water and lipids in the superficial layers of the skin. What very dry skin needs is not simply any old heavy moisturizer—it needs an effective one that penetrates well and integrates into the stratum corneum to deliver moisture continuously, day and night.’’

A new moisturizer for very dry and dehydrated skin offers deep hydration, fast, without feeling heavy.

In response, the scientists at Kiehl’s Since 1851 created Ultra Facial Cream Intense Hydration. Its key ingredient, Enriched Hyaluronic Acid, is really two hydrating molecules that deliver concentrated hydration pockets and fill the cracks in dry skin for deep hydration. In addition, those of any skin type can complement any moisturizer with Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Masque. While you sleep, the intensive moisturizing treatment helps boost skin’s ability to retain water, for long-lasting hydration and a healthier, youthful appearance.

Cookie Jar

At a recent church rummage sale, I found a W.C. Field’s cookie jar marked “McCoy.” I paid $50 for it and feel I got quite a bargain. — Phyllis, Pueblo, Colo. Your cookie jar was produced by McCoy in 1972 and generally retails in the $200 to $250 range, according to “McCoy Pottery: Identification and Price Guide” by Mark F. Moran. Many of the McCoy cookie jars have increased in value in recent years as collectors have become more and more interested in them. For example, the “Liberty Bell” cookie jar, which often sold for about $25 only five or six years ago, now sells for about $100. *** I was a great fan of Hoot Gibson, the Western movie star of the 1930s and ‘40s. I have two of his comics, No. 1 and No. 3WW, both issued by Fox Features Syndicate. Are they worth keeping? — Rob, Roswell, N.M. I contacted several comic-book dealers, and they seem to agree that your comics probably are worth about $300 each. They were issued in about 1950. An excellent reference is “The Standard Guide to Golden Age Comics” by Alex G. Malloy and Stuart W. Wells III, and published by Krause Books. This guide serves up 900 covers of Golden Age comics from 1938-1956, along with nearly

50,000 up-to-date values. It is easy to use and highly recommended, especially if you have a stack of older comics stashed under your bed or in a closet. *** I still have several books from when I was a child. They are “Fred Flintstone Bewildered Baby-Sitter with Pebbles,” “The Flintstones and Dino” and “Hildy’s Hideaway.” Although I have no plans to sell them, I am nevertheless curious about how much they are currently worth. — Susan, Mitchell, S.D. I found your three books referenced in “Warman’s Children’s Books” by Steve Santi and published by Krause Books. The first Flintstone book was published in 1963 and is valued at $16; the second featuring Dino was issued in 1961 and is worth about the same amount. “Hildy’s Hideaway” also is from 1961 and listed for $10. As with most collectibles, condition is extremely important. Children’s books with missing or marked pages are worth much less. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, P.O.
