August 24 has been named Vesuvius Day, making this week a good time to take a closer look at this famous volcano and a few other notable ones. Follow along as Tidbits brings you these explosive facts. • Mount Vesuvius is mainland Europe’s only active volcano, the only one to have erupted within the last 100 years. (The island of Sicily is home to Mount Etna, which is Europe’s most active volcano, having experienced a series of eruptions since 2001.) • Vesuvius is a strato volcano, because it has explosive eruptions as well as pyroclastic flows. This means it emits a fast-moving current of hot gas and rock that can reach a speed of up to 450 mph (700 km/hr) and reach a temperature of 1,830 degrees F (1,000 C). Vesuvius was formed from the collision of two tectonic plates. Volcanoes are usually found where plates are either moving away from each other or colliding. • The most lava ever recorded from an eruption from Vesuvius was in 1906. Italy was preparing for the 1908 Summer Olympics when the disaster occurred, causing extensive damage to the city of Naples and killing more than 100 people. Because Italy did not have the funds to rebuild Naples, the Olympics were switched to London. turn the page for more!

By Sam Mazzotta Men Spook Rescue Dog

DEAR PAWS CORNER: My beautiful big mutt, “Archie,” is a rescue dog who is very anxious around men. I’m not sure why, or what’s in his past to cause this. But when company comes over, he whines constantly or runs behind me to bark if a man approaches. How can I ease his anxiety? -- Linda in San Jose, Calif. DEAR LINDA: It’s clear that Archie has some trauma in his past, and he may never be completely free of his anxiety. What you’ll need to do is be patient and encouraging. There isn’t a tried and true method to “cure” him of this, but you can ease his fears. First, talk with his vet about ways to reduce Archie’s overall anxiety. He may suggest medication, either for a specific period of time or permanently, to help. You also can try alternative medicine like Bach’s Rescue Remedy, which many owners swear by and which can be added to Archie’s water bowl once a day. Next, don’t overwhelm him when company comes over. Place Archie in a back room or the kitchen, or train him to stay in place when the doorbell rings. Once everyone

has settled, bring Archie in to meet each guest. If he becomes stressed or won’t approach certain people, don’t worry and don’t be embarrassed. Just take him back to his safe room or kennel cage, give him lots of praise and maybe a treat, and leave it at that. Make sure kids (and some adults!) don’t chase after Archie or insist that they get to pet him. Let Archie approach new people on his own. As he becomes more confident and secure, he may be much friendlier to visitors that he’s familiar with, such as close friends ... maybe. There are no certainties when it comes to dogs that suffered past abuse. Give him consideration and time. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A chaotic atmosphere taxes the patience of the Aries Lamb, who prefers to deal with a more orderly environment. Best advice: Stay out of the situation until things settle. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Tension runs high in both personal and workplace relationships. This can make it difficult to get your message across. Best to wait until you have a more receptive audience. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This is a good time to take a break from your busy schedule to plan for some well-deserved socializing. You could get news about an important personal matter by the week’s end. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An offer of help could come just when you seem to need it. But be careful about saying yes to anything that might have conditions attached that could cause problems down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Sometimes a workplace colleague can’t be charmed into supporting the Lion’s position. That’s when it’s time to shift tactics and overwhelm the doubter with the facts. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You continue to earn respect for your efforts to help someone close to you stand up to a bully. But be careful that in pushing this matter you don’t start to do some bullying yourself. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t ask others if they think you’re up to a new responsibility. Having faith in your own abilities is the key to dealing with a challenge. P.S.: That “private” matter needs your

attention. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to use that Scorpian creativity to come up with something special that will help get your derailed career plans back on track and headed in the right direction. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) While change is favored, it could be a good idea to carefully weigh the possible fallout as well as the benefits of any moves before you make them. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Goat continues to create a stir by following his or her own path. Just be sure you keep your focus straight and avoid any distractions that could cause you to make a misstep. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A colleague’s demands seem out of line. But before reacting one way or another, talk things out and see how you might resolve the problem and avoid future misunderstandings. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A personal matter appears to be making more demands on your time than you feel you’re ready to give. See if some compromise can be reached before things get too dicey. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re able to communicate feelings better than most people. Have you considered a career in the pulpit or in politics? (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

AutoBits

Just as you would expect to pay for the doctor’s visit and diagnostics, it is much the same with your automotive shop. They have thousands of dollars invested in equipment that they use to help diagnose and repair your vehicle. At Kelly’s Automotive Service like many other shops, our technicians have years of experience, schooling and continuing education. We also subscribe to monthly updates for diagnostic equipment, software programs and have costly replacement and repair costs.

Why should I pay for diagnostics on my car?

After all, doesn’t the computer tell you how to fix the car? The short answer to that question is no. Although the “computer” that your shop uses can give them codes, in most cases that is just a starting point. They may still need to test parts on the vehicle (which takes more equipment), look up the codes on another Most shops are doing their best to make sure you and computer, look up wiring diagrams….the list can go on your vehicle are taken care of. In many cases, what and on depending on the vehicle and the issue it came you pay for diagnostics is cheaper than the parts your in for. Some parts stores will “Pull Codes” for you and vehicle may not need. sell you the part they think you need. Replacing parts, AutoBits Brought To You By: may not fix the actual problem. Recently a client put in a $400.00 fuel pump because his vehicle had a lean code and lacked power. When that didn’t fix it, he brought it in. We found a piece of something stuck on his air flow sensor, cleaned it and it ran great! Had he it brought in before replacing the fuel pump, he would have saved $325.00. I encourage you to think of that like this: You go to the doctor for a stomach problem. She will do an exam, takes notes, maybe order some tests. Or she could

MOUNT VESUVIUS (continued): • There have been many eruptions since the annihilation of Pompeii, at least once every century, although none has been as large as the 79 A.D. eruption. Vesuvius erupted at least six times in the 12th and 18th centuries, and eight times during the 1800s. The 20th century experienced three eruptions with the most recent in 1944, when a two-week-long eruption occurred. American airmen were stationed at the Pompeii Airfield during World War II, a few miles from the base of the volcano, and fled when the eruption began, leaving behind 88 aircraft, all of which were a total loss. Twelve lives were lost as a result of this eruption. • Today the slopes of Vesuvius are covered with heavy vegetation and shrubs, and vineyards have been planted. Although its current activity seems to produce nothing but occasional steam from vents at the bottom of the crater, geologists who study the mountain maintain that it is a very dangerous volcano that will erupt again. Because it is the most densely-populated volcanic region in the world, with more than 3 million people living within 20 miles of the crater, an eruption today will be much more devastating than previous ones. While the 79 A.D. eruption destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum, many cities would now be buried, including Naples, which is Europe’s 9th most populated urban area and Italy’s 4th largest urban economy. • In 1995, the Italian government officially declared the area around the volcano a national park, thereby prohibiting further building in an attempt to reduce the population in the danger zone. They have demolished illegally constructed buildings and even offered financial incentives to citizens for moving away. (cont’d on page 4)

Page 4 MOUNT VESUVIUS (continued): • Tourists are allowed access by road to 660 feet (200 m) of Vesuvius’ summit, and a spiral walkway continues around the mountain from there to the crater. • Scientists consider a volcano to be active if it has erupted within the last 10,000 years. There are about 1,500 worldwide that meet this criteria, with most along the Pacific Ring of Fire. About 50 erupt each year. More than 160 volcanoes in the United States fit in the active category, the majority of those in the Cascade Range, stretching from southern British Columbia to northern California. • Indonesia has 130 active volcanoes, including Mount Tambora, responsible for the most violent eruption in recorded history, In 1815, Tambora’s eruption resulted in an estimated 71,000 deaths in an explosion heard more than 1,200 miles (2,000 km) away. It produced such climate-changing effects that 1816 was known as “the year without a summer.” Indonesia’s Mt. Krakatoa erupted in 1883, killing 36,000 and destroying two-thirds of the island. It has erupted as recently as 2008. • Geologists consider Mt. Rainier “potentially the most dangerous” mainland U.S. volcano, with 3.2 million people living in its vicinity, although it hasn’t erupted since the 1840s. Also within the Cascade Range, Mt. St. Helen’s 1980 eruption was one of the U.S.’s worst, killing 57. It reawakened in 2004 with four explosions sending steam and ash 10,000 feet (3048 m) above its crater. • There are five active volcanoes in Hawaii. Kilauea is one of the world’s most frequently active volcanoes, having erupted 62 times in 245 years. It has been erupting continuously since 1983. Mauna Loa has erupted 15 times 1900, most recently in 1984.

The bolts fastening the timbers and copper sheathing on “Old Ironsides” were provided by Paul Revere. • On Aug. 23, 1904, Harold D. 541-826-2440 www.RVPoolCenter.com How Old Is Old?

When do we seniors finally reach old age? The answer depends on who we ask, and when. Back in 2009, Pew Research did a survey, and the average answer was at 68 years old ... unless the person being asked was under 30. Then “old age” struck before age 60, said the youngsters. Those who were already age 65 said old age didn’t arrive until age 74. The result was even disputed by sex; when all ages were averaged, women said age 70, and men said age 66. The top four answers to the question about becoming old netted conflicting mile markers: 1) Turns 85; 2) can’t live independently; 3) can’t drive; 4) turns 75. Here’s a smile: A U.K. study done four years ago pegs the end of youth at 35 and the beginning of old age at 58. In Portugal, it was age 29 when youth ended. (Did you feel middle aged at 30?) Fast-forward to now: Similar research shows that those over 40 think “old age” starts at age 80. My, how things have changed. Seems that retirement doesn’t automatically put us in the old age category, at least for those who are decades younger than we are. Perhaps it’s how we’re living now that makes a difference in perceptions of age. Our parents might have sat back after retirement at age 65, taken on at-home hobbies, napped in the afternoon and called it good. We’re out there in the world traveling, being active, working out, texting the grandkids, learning musical instruments, acting in local theater, volunteering, joining clubs -- and often still working. At this point, 36 percent of us don’t think we’ll retire at age 65 -- maybe because we can’t? Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com. FAMOUS CANADIANS: DONALD SUTHERLAND

We’ve seen him as an alien hunter, a Civil War General, astronaut, a reverend, villain, and loving father. Let’s examine the 50+-year career of famous Canadian Donald Sutherland. • Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Sutherland was a sickly child, struggling with rheumatic fever, hepatitis, and polio myelitis. He spent many of his younger years in Nova Scotia, with his first part-time job there as a radio announcer at age 14. While in high school, Sutherland appeared in a few stage productions, carrying this interest on at the University of Toronto. He graduated with a double major, engineering and drama, with intentions of a career as an engineer, however, changed his mind and headed for London in 1957 to attend that city’s Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Adaptive Sports Get VA Grant The Department of Veterans Affairs is putting up $8 million for grants to providers of adaptive sports opportunities for disabled veterans and members of the armed forces.

A lot goes into providing events and opportunities: training, supplies, coaches, equipment, recreation therapists, program development and more, right in the veteran’s community. For more advanced athletes, there are the Paralympic and adaptive sport programs on regional and national levels. The grant money will be very welcome and might even result in additional programs being created across the country. (In addition, when training for the Paralympics, there’s a monthly training allowance.) A few examples of upcoming events: Summer Sports Clinic in San Diego, Sept. 7- 12; Tee Tournament in Iowa City, Iowa, Sept. 8-11; Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, Colo., Sept. 28-Oct. 4; Creative Arts Festival in Milwaukee, Oct. 27-Nov. 2. To learn more about these events, go online to www. va.gov/adaptivesports.

• Sutherland had his first role in a 1963 British film, and after several other small parts, he landed a major role in 1967. After another actor had dropped out of the filming of The Dirty Dozen, Sutherland was offered the part in the popular film which was the fifth highest grossing film of the year. Two years later, he was once again a soldier in both the smash hit M*A*S*H* (as Hawkeye Pierce) and Kelly’s Heroes, along with Clint Eastwood. His career received another boost in 1971 with his role as a private detective opposite Jane Fonda in Klute, and as a grieving father in the Oscar-winning Ordinary People in 1980. • Sutherland made an error in judgment in 1978 when picked to star as Professor Dave Jennings in National Lampoon’s Animal House. He was offered the choice of a salary of $40,000 up front or a percentage of the film’s income. Because he doubted the success factor of the movie, he chose the $40,000, and Animal House went on to gross $141,600,000. (cont’d on page 7)

Benjamin Helm. When her husband died in 1863, Emily crossed Union lines to visit her sister in the White House. Newspapers in the North created a furor over incident, speculating that the general’s widow could be a spy. After taking an oath of loyalty to the Union, Emily Helm was granted amnesty. • John Lennon appeared on the first cover of Rolling Stone magazine. • Do you go to action movies just to see the car chases? Here’s a real-life doozy for you: In 2002, after a bank robbery in Wrestedt, Germany, the culprits led law-enforcement officials on a 620mile chase through several countries. After two days, the criminals were finally apprehended in Rivne, Ukraine. • The original Mickey and Minnie Mouse were voiced by Wayne Allwine and Russi Taylor. Rogue Valley Pet

“For business partners Chris Baldasaro and Terry Weathers, opening a Pet Supply Store means more than just providing products for pet owners to purchase. “Our goal is to be a resource team not only within the store, but out in the local community at large.” Chris said. On October 1st 2011, the partners did just that when they opened the doors at Rogue Valley Pet located at 281 E. Barnett Rd. Chris has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and had been in the premium pet food business for 13 years at Bend Pet Express, as a manager, trainer, and buyer. “By offering consumers the highest quality pet products, knowledge, and customer service above all else, the Bend stores consequently grew in size and reputation over the course of the last decade,” Chris explained. Terry and his family farmed hops outside of Salem for several years. He has held many other interesting jobs as well over the years, including: RV sales, limousine driver, home builder for Habitat for Humanity, and a leash & collar representative. “Terry demonstrates that the core of great salesmanship is building trust and developing strong relationships,” Chris said. Through their experiences in the pet business, Chris & Terry identified a need in the Rogue Valley for a local community-based independent premium pet supply store. “Rogue Valley Pet is a store that believes in carrying products made in the Northwest and pursues USA-sourced products for its customers over foreign sourced items,” “None of our foods have any soy, wheat or corn fillers, and our pet food meat sources are hormone-free, antibiotic-free raised; pet food fruit and vegetable components have been grown without pesticides. All our food products are 100% guaranteed.” Their knowledgeable staff will listen actively to customer pet concerns, and also help with unique dietary needs. “We encourage our shoppers to give us feedback on our products and services,” Chris continued. “Finding our customers the right trainers, boarding kennels, groomers, rescues and veterinarians for their four legged family members adds to the quality of all our lives.” Rogue Valley Pet also gives regularly to local rescue organizations such as Dogs For The Deaf and SOHC through pet food donations, and through support of local pet adoption events and fundraisers. They also offer pet grooming at their retail store by long-time groomer of the Hollywood stars, Marie Kokkalis of The Total Dog. “We are grateful to the people of Medford and the surrounding communities for supporting and welcoming our families into this community, and look forward to getting to know more of the people and the wonderful pets that enrich our lives.” Rogue Valley Pet is located at 281 E. Barnett Road and is open Monday to Saturday 9am-6pm and Sunday 10am6pm. For more information please call 541-857-5000.

PAUL BUNYAN (continued): blizzard. When he called his fellow loggers to dinner in the camp, he did so by blowing through a hollow tree or bellowing loudly enough to cause limbs to fall from trees. His monumental logging camp was on the fictional Big Onion River. • There are more than 200 roadside statues of Paul Bunyan across the United States and Canada, from California to Oregon to British Columbia to Idaho, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Indiana, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and New York. Perhaps the tallest is in Klamath, California, towering 49 feet (15 m) above that town’s Trees of Mystery attraction. A 35-ft.-tall (10.7 m) Babe stands beside him. • Oscoda, Michigan, has declared itself Bunyan’s official home because James MacGillivray’s early documents came from there. But they need to get in line behind Bemidji, Minnesota, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and Bangor, Maine. • The state of Maine claims it has a birth certificate. Hackensack, Minnesota maintains that Bunyan’s sweetheart Lucette hails from that community and they have constructed a statue of her and their son, Paul, Jr. in a downtown park. Two places contend they are home to Bunyan’s grave – Kelliher, Minnesota, and Wausau, Wisconsin.
