There are more than 10,466 miles of streets in the United States named Main Street. Even if the “main” street in a city or town is not called “Main,” it is there – usually the most important street in an area’s history. • Main Streets are all over the world and tell many varied stories. Canada has its share. One of the most famous is the Main Street in Winnipeg, where it intersects with Portage Avenue, considered the heart of Winnipeg, the center of the country and thereby the heart of Canada. It is also said to be the coldest intersection in Canada! (eh, pretty much an unfair assessment!) • “The Main” in Montreal is actually named Boulevard St-Laurent, also known as St. Lawrence Boulevard. It is considered the symbolic dividing line between the English and French communities in the city. Designated a National Historic Site in 2002, the street was made famous by the music of Leonard Cohen and books by Mordecai Richler. • Another Canadian Main Street was once listed as the longest road in the world. Yonge Street in Toronto runs from the Lake Ontario shore through Toronto north to become Highway 11 and continue through many country towns and wilderness to Lake Simcoe. turn the page for more!

MAIN STREET (continued): • Yonge Street was removed from Guinness list of records in 1998, possibly because of road changes near Barrie, Ontario. The distance for the road is 1,178 miles (1,896 km), which sure seems long enough to be distinctive! A brass plaque is embedded in the sidewalk on Yonge Street near Toronto’s waterfront, across from Dundas Square, that marks distances to key cities of Ontario. The street was named after Sir George Yonge, an expert on Roman roads, by Ontario’s first governor. • The Main Streets at Disney theme parks are based on Walt Disney’s hometown when he was a boy, Marceline, Missouri. Walt wanted to create an area that would bring back memories of childhood in a small town. • San Luis, Arizona’s Main Street is unusual in that it comes to a dead-end at the Mexican border. • The Main Street of Melvindale, Michigan runs through a trailer park near The Ford River Rouge automobile plant, which was the largest factory in the world when it was fully operational. The Rouge, which is now a museum, was where the Model A automobile was first produced in 1927. The gigantic facility was Henry Ford’s idea with a factory that would achieve “a continuous, nonstop process from raw material to finished product.”

By Sam Mazzotta Make Dog Training Part of Daily Life DEAR PC: Kudos on reminding people that they must be actively involved with their dogs if they expect to have good training results. As someone who is “owned” by an independent Siberian Husky, I can attest that nothing in life is free (NILIF)! I have a great system your readers may like. It’s easy and it works. I have two senior dogs now, a German Shepherd, “Ralph,” who was a private rescue, and “Damian,” the Siberian who’s been here all his life. I make both of them sit before they get their meal, and the dish is on the floor. They have to lie down in the morning before they get a “snack” piece of plain toast. My husband and I also make them sit before putting their leashes on to take them for a walk. This has worked great over the years and has been a win-win situation for our whole family. We also have used the crate training method for years. I have a large crate in the kitchen that “Ralph” knows is his den. He sleeps and naps in there, and I

April 28 - May 4, 2014

trained him to go into it when visitors come to the house or when I’m taking out the trash. It’s turned so that he can see out of it and get a view of all the activity in our home. -- Anita C., Rochester, N.Y. DEAR ANITA: Thank you for passing this along! Working in basic obedience training as part of everyday life is a great way to reinforce that training and encourage positive behavior. While not everyone agrees with crate training, it can be very effective when done correctly. The Humane Society of the United States has crate training tips at www.humanesociety.org/animals/dogs/tips/crate_training.html. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. • The Rouge in many ways functioned as a city, without its own Main Street or residents! It had its own railroad with 16 locomotives, a bus network with 15 miles of paved streets, a police force, fire department, and even a fully staffed hospital. In the 1930s, at its peak, more than 100,000 people were employed at The Rouge. (continued on page 4)

:) Harsh Winter Means More Work in Spring Many parts of the country have experienced a bad winter, with snow, ice and below-average temperatures. You might have more to do now than you would during an average spring. How does the outside of your house look? Snow, wind and ice likely have taken their toll on your siding, painted surfaces (like window trim or shutters) and your roof and eaves. Draft up your to-do list as you find battered caulking, broken screens and driveway cracks. And how did your shrubs fare? If you’re on a budget plan, paying monthly for your fuel or electricity, there’s a good chance you got a bad surprise recently when you realized that your monthly payments aren’t going to cover your fuel for the year. Many

folks are having to scramble to come up with the cash to pay off the balance before the next budget plan begins, likely in June. Once the fuel company determines your new monthly payment, send extra every month. If next winter is mild and it appears that you’re paying ahead, contact the company in the spring and ask about not making that final payment. If you live in snow country where the roads are plowed and spread with sand and salt, get your vehicle to the car wash as soon as it opens for the season. This is not the time for a do-it-yourself wash with the hand wand at the open-air car wash. You need the drive-through that includes an undercarriage spray wash to get all the salt off the bottom of your vehicle before rust and corrosion set it, as well as cause damage to brakes and fuel lines. Before next winter, have the undercarriage sealed. The same applies if you live near the sea: Overspray and salt in the air can damage your car if left on. Scrub and vacuum your floor mats too.

Wash winter coats, gloves and boots now, while it’s easier to get the grime off. Refresh with another wash when winter comes again. If you need to cut back on expenses to cover winter repairs, consider buying only generic store brands for one or two months. You might discover that some of those items are just as good as brand name and thereby cut your bills on a permanent basis. Consider generic for: milk, flour, cleaning products like detergent, children’s cereals, juice, eggs, bread, pain relievers and allergy medicines (compare the ingredients), shampoo and soap. And keep an eye on The Old Farmer’s Almanac for next winter. It predicted this past winter quite accurately. April 28 - May 4, 2014 MAIN STREET (continued): • Have you heard of the longest Main Street in America? The city limits of Island Park, Idaho follow a 35 mile (56 km) drive on U.S. highway 20 that connects Idaho with West Yellowstone, Montana and Yellowstone National Park. The rural town is only 500-5000 feet wide (152-1524 m) along the highway with fishing lodges, mountain views, the very cold Henry’s Fork (also known as the North Fork of the Snake River), Henry’s Lake as well as Island Park Reservoir. Western hospitality beckons visitors to stop and explore. • Some Main Streets have had many years of decay before being brought back to life by history lovers. One such place is York, Pennsylvania. By 1978 all four of its downtown department stores were shuttered. Through programs provided for re-establishing downtown areas, the town is now thriving and Main Street is a popular destination. • Natchitoches, Louisiana, founded in 1714, is the oldest settlement in the Louisiana Purchase. The main street in the downtown area faces the Cane River and is named Front Street. This “main” street is kept alive by many small stores with southern charm, tasty restaurants plus a fabulous annual Christmas Festival. It is a destination street to visit. Natchitoches was also given a boost in popularity by the movie, Steel Magnolias, shot on location in 1989. • A famous motorcycle gathering fills up Main Street and the entire city of Sturgis, South Dakota annually. The 74th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will be August 4-10, this year. The first rally was held in 1938 with nine motorcyclists in a race. Now the rally attracts as many as 600,000 motorcycle enthusiasts; but they don’t all race! (continued on page 5)

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be tempted to be more assertive when dealing with a job-related matter. But a carefully measured approach works best at getting the cooperation you’re looking for. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While others urge you to act now, you instinctively recognize that a move at this time is not in your best interests. You should know when to do so by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A busy schedule keeps you on the move for much of the week. But things ease up by the time the weekend arrives, allowing you to reconnect with family and friends. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Travel dominates the week, and despite some delays in getting to where you want to go, the overall experience should prove to be a positive one in many ways. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine self-confidence comes roaring back after a brief period of doubt and helps you get through a week of demanding challenges and ultimately emerge triumphant. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Virgos who have made a major commitment -- personal or professional -- should be able to tap into a renewed reservoir of self-confidence to help them follow through. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You soon could receive news from a surprising source that could cause you to change your mind about how

you had planned to deal with an ongoing job-related problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A surprise move of support from a colleague who has never been part of your circle of admirers helps influence others to take a new look at what you’ve put on the table. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) While a bold decision to take an “I know what I’m doing” approach impresses some colleagues, it also raises the risk of causing resentment among others. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A misunderstanding ‘twixt you and a friend might not be your fault at all, despite what he or she suggests. Talk it out to see at what point the confusion might have started. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Getting into a community operation fulfills the Aquarian’s need to help people. It also can lead to new contacts that might one day help you with a project. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A minor problem could delay the start of a long-anticipated trip for two. Use the time to recheck your travel plans. You might find a better way to get where you’re going. • On May 10, 1749, the 10th and final volume of Henry Fielding’s novel “Tom Jones” is printed. The serialized novel told the humorous story of the attempts of the illegitimate but charming Tom Jones to win his neighbor’s daughter. • On May 5, 1904, Boston Red Sox pitcher Cy Young (born Denton True Young) throws a perfect game against the Detroit Tigers. It was the first perfect game of the modern era; the last had been thrown by John Montgomery Ward in 1880. It was the second of three no-hitters that Young would throw, and the only perfect game. • On May 9, 1926, according to their claims, polar explorer Richard E. Byrd and co-pilot Floyd Bennett fly over the North Pole in a triple-engine Fokker monoplane, the Josephine Ford. However, the discovery in 1996 of the diary that Byrd kept seemed to suggest that he and Bennett may have turned back 150 miles short of the pole because of an oil leak. • On May 6, 1940, John Steinbeck is awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his novel “The Grapes of Wrath.” The book traces the fictional Joad family of Oklahoma as they lose their family farm and move to California in search of a better life. • On May 7, 1965, in a Clearwater, Fla., motel room, a bleary-eyed Keith Richards awoke, grabbed a tape recorder and laid down one of the greatest pop hooks of all time: The opening riff of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” He then promptly fell back to sleep. • On May 8, 1984, claiming that its athletes will not be safe from protests and possible physical attacks, the Soviet Union announces that it will not compete in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. The boycott was a response to the decision of the United States to boycott the 1980 games held in Moscow. • On May 11, 1997, IBM’s supercomputer Deep Blue makes chess history by defeating chess champion Gary Kasparov. The Russian master conceded defeat after 19 moves in the sixth game of the tournament. It was the first defeat of a reigning world champion by a machine in tournament play.

The VA will get that information themselves -- from the IRS and Social Security. Starting March 2014, you’ll only have to give your income information if you’re applying for the first time. ANNE MURRAY

When the 2010 Olympic Ceremony in Vancouver featured famous Canadians in the opening ceremony, Anne Murray was one of them. She’s been called Canada’s “Songbird” for many years. • Morna Anne Murray was born in 1945, the fourth child and only daughter to James and Marion Murray. She grew up with five brothers in Springhill, Nova Scotia. Anne was a tomboy and in her own words, “the reason I became a successful singer was that, as a kid, I could never do anything as well as my brothers. I wanted to do something better than they did.” She started singing as a child, took voice lessons as a teen, and hasn’t stopped singing! • Murray’s 40+ year career has garnered her 20 number one hits. She has sold more than 54 million albums. • Murray’s first paid music job was while she was studying at the University of New Brunswick. She was hired to sing at the Curling Club at Fredericton. This may not sound great, but curling is a very popular sport in Canada! It was a good assignment. • When the snow flies and winter sets in for the northern U.S. and Canada many people become snowbirds and head south. Since “Snowbird” was her first big hit, Murray’s fans are often called snowbirds too. It was the second song ever written by Canadian songwriter Gene MacLellan and took Murray to the spotlight internationally. “Snowbird” sold a million copies in 1970 and for the first time in history, an American gold record was awarded to a solo Canadian female. • When Murray became a regular on the “Glenn Camp-

bell Goodtime Hour,” which was a hit show at the time, the American audience fell in love with her even more. • Murray’s music hit the charts in country, pop, and even children’s genres. Her songs “You Needed Me,” “Could I Have This Dance,” and “A Love Song” are songs still requested today. The children’s album she recorded, There’s a Hippo in My Tub, in 1978 was reissued in 2001. • Many honors have been bestowed on Anne Murray including three honorary doctorates from University of New Brunswick, Saint Mary’s University, and University of Prince Edward Island. She graduated from University of New Brunswick with a physical education degree and taught high school in Summerside, Prince Edward Island before her singing career took off. • On June 29, 2007, Murray was honored when Canada Post issued a limited edition Anne Murray stamp. • If you want to see the list of the many honors and awards that Murray has received through the years, pick up a copy of her autobiography, All of Me, which was released in the fall of 2009. She has won a long list of Canadian Juno Awards, which is understandable since it is her home country – but – she also has won four Grammy Awards, a Country Music Association of Great Britain Award and as they say…the list goes on and on! She has been honored by many for her beautiful voice. • Springhill, Nova Scotia, Murray’s hometown, is home to The Anne Murray Centre. Since opening in July, 1989, there have been over 400,000 visitors from around the world to explore the memorabilia of this world-class singer.

By Samantha Mazzotta Kids Can be Rough on Wood Floors Q: My kids have discovered roller skating, which is great. However, it’s been kind of rough on my old hardwood floors, especially near the front door, where they come in and take off their skates. There are a lot of scuffs, scratches and dings. Any way I can get rid of them? And is there a way to prevent these scratches? -- Tammy in Baltimore A: The fastest way to reduce those scratched areas by the front door is to make the kids take off their skates outside. And while I’m sure you already have a mat just inside the door, consider buying one that is much wider so that outside dirt and sand will land on the mat and not scuff up the floor’s finish. Without an idea of how bad the scratches and scuffs are, I can’t say exactly how you should resolve the problem. So I’ll tell you how to deal with a few scratches, and how to deal with a bigger problem. You can blend in minor surface scratches using a stain marker (available at home-improvement and flooring stores) in a matching color. A video by The Rosebud Company (http://rosebudfloors.com/hardwood-floor-videos/) shows a couple of ways to blend

ROAD SIGNS

The first road signs used were milestones that indicated the distance and directions to destinations. Used as early as the 4th Century, BC, there were approximately 50,000 miles (80,000 km) of roads in the Roman Empire. • The saying “all roads lead to Rome,” was really true in ancient times. Rome was the hub for trade, commerce, culture, politics and military might in all of Europe for many years. • The Forum Romanum, which is the center of the city of Rome, Italy, has the remains of the Milliarium Aureum (column), or the “Golden Milestone.” It was erected in 20 BC by Augustus, first emperor of the Roman Empire, The column was covered with gilt bronze and was the spot whereby all roads pointed out of the city. The names of the principal cities were engraved on the column along with their distances from Rome. • Early road signs in North America were, like those of ancient Rome, mainly for giving the distance from one place to the next. Then as cars became popular in the early 1900s, a need for signs for safety became a high priority. • Early automobile owners were mostly the wealthy who used the auto for convenience and entertainment. They formed clubs and started creating their own signs. Colors, shapes, messages, sizes and placements were not uniform from one area to the next! • As early as 1899, owners of horseless carriages in New York City formed an automobile club when they met at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. They saw the need for signs to guide drivers through the city or to sites of interest within the city. (continued on page 10)

in the color, particularly by blotting the marker on a cloth and then rubbing the cloth over the scratch to more seamlessly blend it in. For small dents where the wood is compressed downward slightly, you can try a couple of methods. On unvarnished floors, you can try to steam out the dent. (Always test this method first in an inconspicuous area, and don’t do it if the finish in the test area turns white or very cloudy.) Take a clean, lint-free cloth and a steam iron. Spritz a bit of water directly onto the dent, place the cloth on top, and with the iron on its maximum setting and the steam turned on, press it over the cloth and move in a small circular pattern for about a minute. Lift up the iron, check under the cloth, then repeat the steps. A second method, particularly if you’re worried about ruining the floor finish, is to cover the dent with wood putty and stain to match. Apply the putty one small amount at a time, smoothing it completely into the depression, until it’s filled and flush with the surrounding floor. Then use a stain marker in a color matching the wood -- either apply directly to the putty or blot a cloth with the stain and dab or rub into the putty and surrounding area. Allow the area to dry undisturbed for at least a day. If the scratches and dents are deep and numerous, or if the wood is seriously damaged, warped or splintered, bring in a wood flooring professional to evaluate the problem and provide an estimate for repairs. Wood floors can have a lot of impact on a house’s value, so take care of them and get professional help for a complex job. HOME TIP: Avoid using wax-based furniture polishes on wood floors. These can be problematic if and when you refinish floors in the future. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Need a quick fix for tarnished brass? Look in your fridge. Ketchup, applied liberally then buffed off, will remove tarnish in a pinch. • Cut a paper grocery bag open and then cut it to fit the top of your refrigerator. It will catch dust and kitchen grease, and keep the top clean. It’s free and replaceable as often as needed. • “Small cardboard boxes can be covered in gift wrap for pretty storage containers. I love this idea, because it’s easy to coordinate with a lovely gift wrap, and it’s inexpensive too. If you have leftover wallpaper, this works as well!” -- T.F. in Virginia • “My mother handed down some nice teacups and small dishes from my grandmother. They don’t fit with my kitchen decor, but I am using them in my bedroom to hold spare change and jewelry. HOLLYWOOD -Mickey Rooney, who died April 6 at age 93, was one of the last stars from Hollywood’s Golden Era. He and Judy Garland won special Oscars for their work in the films they made at MGM. I shot photos of Mickey when he filmed a commercial for Liberty Mutual and spent an entire day with him. He was charming, funny, told great stories and was easy to work with. It was sad to hear that after 87 years of making top-notch films, doing Broadway shows and making appearances, his estate was valued at only $20,000. The law is checking into alleged financial hanky-panky by one of his step-children, who may have made off with the family fortune, taking advantage of his advanced age. To think, he had eight wives, the first of which was screen-legend Ava Gardner. Last month we lost Shirley Temple, and now Mickey Rooney. Who’s left besides “Gone With the Wind’s” Olivia de Havilland (97 years old) and Luise Rainer,

who won Oscar’s for “The Good Earth” and “The Great Ziegfeld,” who is 104? *** More trouble in paradise, this time for Jennifer Lopez’s 27-year-old boyfriend, Casper Smart (of 2010’s “Step Up 3D”). Even though his film “Restored Me” had a $1 million budget, it didn’t stretch far enough to pay the actors. Randall Wulff, a supporting actor in the film said, “Actors were informed by production manager Michele Turner via email that they weren’t going to be paid because investors had pulled out. She added, ‘I’m putting it into God’s hands, and if we all pray, we will all get paid for our hard work.’” Wulff, who was featured in films such as “Mulholland Drive” and TV shows such as “iCarly” and “The Bold and The Beautiful,” added, “In all my years acting, I’ve never had this happen before. This film was Screen Actors Guild sanctioned; The Guild won’t take this lying down!” ***

PHOTO: Mickey Rooney Ryan Gosling will star and direct a biopic of Warner Bros. choreographer/director Busby Berkeley, famous for those overhead shots of beautiful showgirls in films such as the “Gold Diggers” and “42nd Street.” Even though ratings have soared for the four remaining soaps on daytime TV, as of now, the Daytime Emmy Awards can’t find a TV network to air this year’s award show. TVLand is reviving the first and most famous reality show, “Candid Camera.” Peter Funt, son of show creator Allen Funt, will produce 10 episodes to air this summer. The show began on radio in 1947 as “Candid Microphone.” If you look up from your paper right now, someone might say to you, “Smile, you’re on ‘Candid Camera’!” (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

• It was noted Democratic politician Adlai Stevenson who made the following sage observation: “In America, anybody can be president. That’s one of the risks you take.” • You might be surprised to learn that notorious FBI director J. Edgar Hoover at one time had presidential aspirations. He reportedly believed he would be able to defeat president Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936, though nothing came of his ambition. • Those who study such things say that a lion and a leopard can successfully interbreed. The resulting offspring is called a leopon. • The first pocket calculator was introduced by Texas Instruments in 1961, intended originally for use by the Air Force. Weighing 10 ounces and being only slightly larger than a pack of cigarettes, the company claimed that it could perform the same calculations as a computer 150 times its size. • The sex organ of a male spider can be found at the end of one of its legs. • As most health-care workers could tell you, emergency rooms are busier and more mental patients are admitted during the full moon than at any other time of the month. The time of the new moon is only slightly less busy, however. • The next time you’re drizzling honey on your biscuit, consider this tidbit: Bees must visit up to 2 million flowers just to produce a single pound of the sweetener. • One might think that an event as momentous as the Wright Brothers’ first successful airplane flight in 1903 would have received widespread coverage in the media. One would be wrong. The only newspaper to carry an account of the historic flight was the Virginian Pilot, based in Norfolk. *** Thought for the Day: “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” -- Mark Twain (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

ROAD SIGNS (continued): • Several versions of signs were tested during the early years of the proliferation of autos. Standards for the shapes and colors of signs were developed. Round signs were used to warn of railroad crossings; the octagon was used to warn drivers to stop; diamonds were used to alert drivers that caution was needed; rectangular signs were chosen for providing directions and regulatory information. In the beginning signs were all black letters on white backgrounds. • One city known for busy streets, New York City, is where the proposal for adopting universal road signs and traffic symbols started. The proposal was brought by the Deputy Chief Inspector of Police in New York in 1925. • The first historical record of a STOP sign was in 1915, in Detroit, Michigan. Of course, maybe that was because most cars at that time were manufactured in Detroit. • The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD) was first drafted in 1934. Still used today, but of course, updated, it standardized the signs, signals, locations, marking and maintenance for roads and traffic devices.

• The octagonal shape of “STOP” signs was first recommended by the Mississippi Valley Association of State Highway Departments in 1923. Now universally used, the red signs are easily recognizable. Originally yellow, the red signs with white letters were not used until the MUTCD revision of 1954. • Many signs are designed with figures instead of just words. This makes them recognizable without knowing the local language. Now, if a kangaroo crossing sign is on the road, you’ll most likely know you’re in a land down-under, not in New York City!

Chicken Fricassee

My grandmother could make something out of nothing ... and often had to! She ran a boarding house during the Great Depression, and she was well-known as a great cook. This is a healthier (and easier) version of one of my favorites. 16 ounces skinned and boned uncooked chicken breasts, cut into 4 pieces 1 1/2 cups frozen sliced carrots, thawed 1 cup chopped celery 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 (10 3/4-ounce) can reduced-fat and -sodium cream of chicken soup 1/4 cup water 1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram 2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes 1. Spray a pressure cooker container with butter-flavored cooking spray. Evenly place chicken pieces in prepared container and cook uncovered over medium heat for 4 minutes on each side. Sprinkle carrots, celery and onion over chicken. 2. In a small bowl, combine chicken soup, water, marjoram and parsley. Pour soup mixture evenly over top. Cover and bring to low pressure. Lower heat to stabilize pressure and cook 12 minutes. 3. Remove from heat, wait for pressure to be released, remove cover and stir. For each serving, place 1 piece of chicken on a plate and evenly spoon about 1/2 cup vegetable mixture next to it. Makes 4 servings. Freezes well. Each serving equals: 192 calories, 4g fat, 25g protein, 14g carb., 405mg sodium, 2g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 3 Meat, 1 Vegetable, 1/2 Starch. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

DVDs reviewed in this column will be available in stores the week of May 5, 2014. PHOTO: Kristen Bell in “Veronica Mars” PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Art of the Steal” (R) -- Death-defying stuntman Crunch Kalhoun (Kurt Russell) is sick of botching motorcycle jumps at monster truck rallies. He contacts his half-brother (Matt Dillon) to set up one more big art heist. With Crunch as the “wheelman,” they assemble a team to fill out the rest of the heist-movie roles. Their eyes set on an antique book worth $20 million, Crunch and the gang banter and bicker their way through a typically twisty-turny art heist. Without breaking the boundaries of the genre, “The Art of the Steal” manages to entertain. There’s the plucky ensemble, the hyperactive narration, the motorcycle stunts and misdirects -- everything that’s required. “Generation War” -- This German mini-series seeks to tell the story of the ordinary Germans who came into adulthood during World War II, but who were not Nazis. The five main characters are friends in their 20s: Wilhelm and Friedhelm are brothers headed for the Eastern front; Charlotte is a nurse who has feelings for Wilhelm; and Viktor is a Jewish tailor who is dating aspiring singer Greta. The story covers about four years, beginning in summer 1941, when the friends believe the war will be over by Christmas. The miniseries has drawn a great deal of praise and controversy around the world. The main characters aren’t the monsters we’re used to seeing in WWII films about Germans, but they aren’t totally innocent to

Page 11 what’s going on around them. “Burn” -- In Detroit, neighborhoods are full of buildings sitting vacant and in disrepair -- each one a potential flashpoint for a deadly urban blaze. As urban decay sets in around dwindling jobs and slashed budgets, life-saving public services become even more crucial. This documentary follows the firefighters of Detroit’s Engine Company 50. Their wages are frozen, their numbers are few, they’re making do with damaged and outdated equipment, and the city has never needed them more. The film balances discussion of the larger issues with up-close looks at the brave individuals who serve. “Veronica Mars” -- The underrated television show was canceled years ago, but fan-demand for a Veronica Mars movie was so enthusiastic that a feature-length release with the original cast has materialized. Veronica (Kristen Bell) has put her amateur-detective days behind her, and no longer wants anything to do with private investigations. When she’s on the doorstep of finishing her law degree and starting a new life, she gets a call from her ex, Logan. He’s been accused of murder, and he needs Veronica’s help. There’s plenty of fan-appreciation in the script, but it’s also a real-deal detective thriller that anyone can appreciate. (NAPSA)-You can help to re_duce the number of adult drownings in your community this summer by learning to swim and encouraging others to join you. That’s the word from the experts at the Swimming Saves Lives Foundation. It has launched a nationwide campaign to reduce the number of adult drownings, declaring the month of April “Adult Learn-to-Swim Month.” So far the governors of Nebraska, Indiana and Washington have issued declarations in support.

Learning to swim can offer adults a lifetime of health, fitness and social benefits. Alarmingly, 37 percent of American adults cannot swim the length of a 25-yard pool, according to the Centers for Disease Control. This puts them at risk for becoming one of the 10 people who drown every day in the U.S. “If we can convince water-shy adults to learn to swim in April, we hope to save lives when people gather at pools and beaches for summer recreation,” says Rob Butcher, executive director of U.S. Masters Swimming. He adds that once adults learn the lifesaving skill of swimming, 1,500 programs are available nationwide to encourage adults to keep swimming and enjoy the lifetime health, fitness and social benefits of swimming. To learn more or find an adult learn-to-swim program, go to www.usms.org/learntoswim.
