The Spanish word armadillo means “little armored one.”There are twenty species of the odd looking mammals that wear hard shell-like armor. • Armadillos are not rodents or marsupials and are unrelated to opossums as well. They are mammals, with bony plates covering their back, head, and legs. Most also have bony plates or rings covering their tails. They are the only living mammals with such coverings. • Armadillos originated in South America, which is where most are still residing. The only species in the United States is the nine-banded armadillo, which is found mostly in the southeastern states. They are about the size of an average house cat, ranging in length from 24-31 inches (61-79 cm) and weigh between 8 and 15 pounds (3-7 kg). • The nine-banded armadillo has been spotted as far north as Illinois and Kansas. So far, the northeastern, western and cold northern states have not had to deal with the armored critters. Canadians will probably never see them unless they come south to visit! • Armadillos lack sufficient body fat, especially newborn pups, to endure cold weather. They cannot survive temperatures averaging 28° F (-2°C) or lower.

ARMADILLOS (continued) • Along with their need for warm weather, armadillos also need water. They tend to be found in woody areas, grasslands, wetlands and areas with thorny brush. • Armadillos can wreak havoc on lawns and fields. They are considered pests by homeowners and farmers. The biggest threats to armadillos are humans in cars and their pets; mainly dogs who easily catch and kill young and old armadillos. Most of the animals that humans see are the dead carcasses on roadways. Their inability to get out of the way of automobiles has earned them the nickname “Hillbilly Speed Bumps!” • A notable reaction when nine-banded armadillos are frightened is that they will actually jump up with their arms up (as in a “hands in the air, you’re under arrest”pose). When autos hit these critters in the road, it is not usually the tires that hit them but the front bumpers and grills when they jump up! • Another nickname given to armadillos during the Great Depression of the 1920’s was “Hoover Hogs.”This was because of the promise made by President Herbert Hoover that he would put “a chicken in every pot”for Americans. Many poor people turned to armadillos in their pots due to the collapse of the US economy after World War I. • Some people in the southern states still eat armadillo. Also, in many Central and South American areas armadillo meat is part of the average diet. Connoisseurs say they taste like high-quality, finegrained pork. • Armadillos are not blind but have very poor eyesight. Their ears and noses help them find food and escape from predators. Humans can sometimes quietly watch armadillos without being noticed.

By Sam Mazzotta Can Pets Take Human Vitamins?

DEAR PAWS CORNER: Can I give my dog and cat the same herbal supplements and vitamins that I take? It seems that a lot of medicines prescribed by the vet are just pet-sized doses of human medication. -- Tanya G., via email DEAR TANYA: Some pets can take similar vitamin supplements to humans, but as you noted, the dosages can vary greatly between humans and between different sizes and species. Dogs and cats and other mammals are most likely to be prescribed medicines that humans also take. Lizards, fish and non-mammals are far less likely to take the same things. It’s really, really important to talk to your pets’ veterinarian about giving them vitamins or herbal supplements, in addition to doing your own research on natural pet health. Many vets recommend certain supplements for dogs and cats, usually added to their food or given in pill form. Some advocate homeopathic remedies. All vets will tell you what not to give your pets, and you should take heed. Additionally, your pet’s food may already contain some

vitamin supplements. Be aware of what they’re already eating before adding more of the same. What kind of supplements are commonly given to house pets? Some of the more popular ones include vitamin C, which is purported to reduce inflammation; fish oil, which improves skin and hair; and glucosamine (along with chondroitin), which many owners say has reduced the severity of arthritis in their older dogs. Again, do your research and make sure the supplement or vitamin you want to give your dog or cat is safe for them. Make sure they’re getting the right dose for their weight, as well. With vitamins as with everything else, there is too much of a good thing. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

:) Amazon Prime Savings Will Now Cost More If you’ve been saving money as an Amazon Prime member, you likely received an email that started like this: “We are writing to provide you advance notice that the price of your Prime membership will be increasing. The annual rate will be $99 when your membership renews on ... .” (Renewals before April 17, 2014, will be at the old $79 rate.) If your annual membership doesn’t expire immediately, you have time to consider what you want to do next. Reasons to drop Amazon Prime: If you hunt around, you’ll find other online sites that will ship for free. (If you combine your orders to reach a $35 minimum, your Amazon shipment can be free.) At this point, many retailers are out to entice former Prime members with good deals. If you’re a movie and television fan, look at other options for free streaming of movies and television shows. Check livingonthecheap.com for its comparison of Netflix vs. Hulu vs. Amazon Prime. Reasons to keep Amazon Prime: This is the first price increase since 2005. Free two-day shipping on most purchases can be worth the membership cost if you order enough during the year. in a perpetual time crunch, it can be a lifeline to know that merchandise (including food) can be delivered to your door in two days. If you’re not a big fan of movies or television shows, and don’t really care if they’re the very latest, Amazon has a fairly decent selection of 40,000 shows you can watch for free. If you like the idea of reading a book for free -- maybe to try out a new author or topic without risk -- you can borrow one every month. Deciding whether to keep (or sign up for) Amazon Prime is going to be a balancing act weighing the cost versus the benefit of what you individually use. ARMADILLOS (continued) • Because of their armor, armadillos are not very flexible. Only one of the twenty species, the threebanded armadillo has the ability to roll itself into a ball to hide from predators. This species has a head shaped like a teardrop that seals the armor when it rolls up. All of the others use speed and their digging abilities to escape from danger. • All armadillos are fast diggers, with their long claws. However, if they can’t dig under something, they will climb over. They have been observed climbing fences and trees! • Armadillos are good swimmers as well. They can hold their breath for about 6 minutes! They typically “dog paddle”and can also walk along the bottom of smaller bodies of water. When crossing larger rivers or lakes, they swim. Since their armor is heavy, they gulp air to fill their intestines and give themselves buoyancy. Pretty clever little critters! This ability is probably one way they managed to migrate north from South America. • Warm-blooded, but with low body fat and thin shells, armadillos can’t maintain their body temperatures as most mammals can. This can turn the normally nocturnal animals into diurnal when the weather is cooler. (Nocturnal -active at night; diurnal -active during the day). • With the twenty different species there are differences in size and appearance. The ones found in the U.S., appear naked under their armor. They actually do have a sparse bit of hair on their undersides. • Pink fairy armadillos are the smallest species; only about 3 inches (8cm) in length. They are mostly furry with very little shell. These interesting creatures look like moles wearing a cape and armored headdress! (continued on next page)

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Professional relationships grow stronger. But you might still need to ease some problems with someone in your personal life. One way could be to try to be less rigid in your views. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You might be too close to that perplexing personal situation to even attempt to make a rational decision about it right now. Stepping back could help you gain a wider perspective. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Being asked to choose between the positions of two friends is an unfair imposition on you. It’s best to reject the “demands” and insist they try harder to work things out on their own. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A change of mind about a workplace decision might be called for once you hear more arguments, pro and con. A personal event suddenly takes an unexpected (but pleasant!) turn. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Romance once again looms large for single Leos and Leonas, with Cupid favoring Taurus and Libra to inspire those warm and fuzzy Leonine feelings. Expect another workplace change. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A surprise gift -- and, happily, with no strings attached -- could come just when you need it to avoid a delay in getting your project done. Expect education to dominate the week. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Someone close to you might ask for your support as she or he faces a demanding personal challenge. Offer it, by all means. But be careful you don’t neglect your own needs at this

time. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An unexpected development could put your relationship with a partner or spouse to an emotionally demanding test. But your determination to get to the truth should save the day. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A recent agreement appears to be coming apart over the surfacing of unexpected complications. You might need to have expert advice on how to resolve the situation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your keen business sense helps you get to the truth about a suspicious business deal. Expect to have many colleagues rally to support your efforts in this important matter. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Someone who once moved in and out of your life through the years might now want to come back in on a more permanent basis. Give yourself a lot of time to weigh your decision. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Showing frustration over a delayed workplace decision might get someone’s attention, but not necessarily make him or her move any sooner. Best advice would be to be patient and wait it out. BORN THIS WEEK: You are drawn to excitement and enjoy fast-tempo music, with the more brass, the better. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

• On April 14, 1912, the RMS Titanic fails to divert its course from an iceberg, ruptures its hull and begins to sink. The Titanic was divided into 16 compartments that were presumed to be watertight. Because four of these compartments could be flooded without loss of buoyancy, the Titanic was considered unsinkable. • On April 20, 1923, Tito Puente, the bandleader and percussionist who helped popularize Latin dance music in America, is born in New York City. During a career that spanned six decades, “El Rey” (The King), recorded more than 100 albums and won five Grammy Awards. • On April 16, 1947, multimillionaire and financier Bernard Baruch first coins the term “Cold War” to describe relations between the United States and the Soviet Union, a war without fighting or bloodshed, but a battle nonetheless. • On April 15, 1959, Fidel Castro visits the United States. The trip got off to an inauspicious start when it became clear that President Dwight Eisenhower had no intention of meeting with Castro. Instead, Eisenhower went to the golf course to avoid any chance meeting. • On April 17, 1960, Eddie Cochran, the musician behind “Summertime Blues” and other rockabilly hits, is killed when the taxi carrying him from a show in Bristol, England, crashes en route to the airport in London, where he was to catch a flight home to the U.S. He was 21. On April 19, 1971, as a prelude to a massive antiwar protest that would include 200,000 demonstrators, Vietnam Veterans Against the War begin a five-day demonstration in Washington, D.C. The generally peaceful protest ended on April 23 with about 1,000 veterans throwing their combat ribbons, helmets and uniforms on the Capitol steps, along with toy weapons. • On April 18, 1989, thousands of Chinese students continue to take to the streets in Beijing to protest government policies. The protests grew until the Chinese government ruthlessly suppressed them in June, killing thousands, during what came to be known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre.

www.TidbitsOfRogueVally.com ARMADILLOS (continued) • The largest armadillo species is called, not surprisingly, the giant armadillo. They can grow up to 5 feet (1.5 m) long and weigh as much as 132 pounds (60 kg)! They have 11-13 movable bands on their main shells and 3-4 on their necks. They have up to 100 teeth which are shed as they age.

Page 5 is that they are the only known mammals that give birth to four identical babies. (Rarely there will be 3 or 5 instead of 4 but they are always identical.) This birth phenomenon is known as “polyembryony.”The identical quadruplets provide medical researchers with valuable models for studying multiple births in humans.

• All armadillos have teeth that are like pegs and • Nine-banded armadillos have another strange ability concerning their young. They can delay birth after don’t have enamel; hence they are not very hard or fertilization for up to two years. Another peculiarity strong. Armadillos are from the order of mammals about young pups is that they will make a weak called Edentata(orXenarthra) which is a descriptive purring noise when they attempt to nurse a female adjective that means “lacking teeth.”They actually that is not their mother. may have teeth but many times there are no front teeth and very few or no back teeth. Other mammals • The nine-banded species have been heard making from the order that are also found in Central and other odd noises. They have a low, wheezy grunt South America are anteaters and sloths. when they dig and burrow or are captured; a buzzing noise when they are alarmed or are trying to escape; • An unusual happening with the nine-banded species and sometimes a pig-like squeal when frightened. Medals of Honor In 2002, the Defense Authorization Act required a review of the records of 600 Hispanic and Jewish veterans who’d been in combat as far back as World War II. The purpose was to be sure that none of them had been denied the Medal of Honor due to prejudice and discrimination, and were given a lesser award instead. Last month, 24 veterans received the award. Only three were still alive to attend the ceremony; the rest of the awards were given posthumously. It’s been 12 years since the order was given to review the documents, and more than half a century since the Medals of Honor were earned. Besides the pride of knowing they’d earned the nation’s highest military honor, what else did the men miss out on all those years? The money: Yes, retroactive lump sums can be handed out now (calculations start with the first day of the month following the date of the event), but it might have made a difference in some of their lives if they’d had the cash

MOH license plates, if the state has them. Flying Space A. Children can go to one of the military academies, if they qualify. Invitations to inaugurations and balls. Granted, many of the new MOH recipients were killed in action, but not all of them. One passed away in 1977. Another in 1986. Another in 2001. One last year, in 2013. While the military gets a thumbs-up for reviewing the records, here’s hoping it’s put procedures in place so that this never happens again. The army.mil website says it can take 18 months to get a determination on awarding a Medal of Honor. That’s plenty of time. NIA VARDALOS Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on September 24, 1962, Antonia Eugenia Vardalos is most widely known for her starring role inMy Big Fat Greek Weddingin 2002. She goes by the shortened version of her first and middle names, Nia. • Vardalos has always had an outgoing personality. She started performing at the Rainbow Stage, a local theater company. Her work there helped her secure a scholarship to Ryerson University in Toronto in 1986. • In 1988, Vardalos joined Toronto’s Second City theater troupe. She moved to Chicago’s famous Second City troupe shortly after. From there she settled in Los Angeles and started landing bit parts on sitcoms, including The Drew Carey Show. She also had a good role on Team Knight Rider. • Vardalos’biggest success, so far, was when her onewoman play, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, became a hit independent film in 2002. She drew on her eccentric Greek upbringing and stories from her Greek friends, to write the play. When actress Rita Wilson and her husband, Tom Hanks, agreed to back her film it became the surprise hit of the year. With only a $5 million budget, small compared to most hits, the film drew record numbers of viewers by word-of-mouth with hardly any television or billboard advertising. • CBS ran a sitcom to follow the movie in February, 2003, called My Big Greek Life. It featured many from the movie’s cast but only had a brief run. • Vardalos has had other successes in writing and acting, including Connie and CarlaandI Hate Valentine’s Day.

Obvious from her writing about families and her Greek upbringing emphasizing the importance of family, Nia and Ian wanted children. • After struggling with infertility for over ten years, including 13 failed In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) procedures, Vardalos and Gomez looked into adoption. After noticing a billboard about foster care adoption near her home in Los Angeles that she’d driven by many times, and many frustrations with regular adoption routes, the two decided to check the system out. • Surprisingly, the two welcomed a three-year-old little girl in 2008, with only 14-hours’notice! Little Ilaria had been a foster child since birth. According to a People Magazineinterview in April, 2013, Vardalos “knew she was meant to be the little girl’s mother,”the first time she saw her. She whispered in little Ilaria’s ear, “I will always take care of you.” • Vardalos is now not only an actress and writer of movies and plays but in April, 2013, her book,Instant Mom, hit bookstores. Vardalos is a proponent of foster care adoptions and feels “a responsibility to use my big fat mouth to talk about this issue!”The book is full of humor and honesty about the difficulties of becoming a parent and parenting once you have a child. She says this is “the book I wished was out there when I was searching for credible information on adoption.”The proceeds from the sale of her book are donated to charity. (continued on page 8)

By Samantha Mazzotta Drafty Windows a Costly Nuisance Q: Our front room windows have never been very good at keeping out drafts on windy nights, and in the summer, it’s the hottest room in the house. Do we need to replace these windows? -- Charlene T., via email A: Drafty, leaky windows have a number of causes for -- from warped or old frames to single-pane windows and more -- but completely replacing the windows and frames can be quite costly. Your electric company may offer an energy audit kit -- or can even send a professional to perform an energy audit -- at low or no cost. A basic kit can determine that hot or cool air is escaping the house, while more detailed audits can determine where that air is escaping. Another way is to simply bring in a window replacement contractor to inspect the front-room windows, determine what’s wrong and present an estimate for the cost of repair or replacement. This is the costliest option, so be certain the problem is severe enough to warrant window and/or frame re•This humorous Greek Canadian actress still acts in film and television projects while being a mom and wife. She also stays busy answering questions about her book and the joys of adoption. BILLBOARDS Outdoor billboard advertising actually began when lithography was invented in 1796. Smart business men and women wanted the public to know about their goods and services. • The earliest use of large format billboards (in excess of 50 square feet or 4.6 square meters) was when Jared Bell printed circus posters in 1835, in New York. • Leasing of billboards began in 1867, the start of an American industry. The Associated Bill Posters’Association of the U.S. and Canada formed in Chicago in 1891. After several changes, the association has been known as the Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA) for years. OAAA celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2011. • By 1900, companies wanted to advertise soaps, toothpaste, breakfast cereals and more. At that time, standard billboards were created in America. Many billboards were erected with mass production and placement along streets and highways. • During World War I billboards promoted having troops and supplies ready for conflict. After the war, the large advertisements communicated peace and improving life. • The practice of giving away free advertising space for public service messages started in 1913. Companies owning billboards are still encouraged to fill “open boards”with positive messages helpful for the general health and welfare of the public. • Burma Shave, a shaving cream company, had a very successful road sign campaign that started in the (continued on page 10)

placement. Consider getting two or three estimates from different contractors to compare prices. In the long term, investing in new, higher-quality windows can save a lot in heating and air conditioning costs, and help make the front room more comfortable year-round. In the short term, you’ll want to take some inexpensive measures to prevent drafts and, in the summer, cool air from escaping. If you’ve performed an energy audit or have been able to figure out just where outside air is blowing through, you can lessen the problem. Air entering under the sash can be blocked by placing a length of foam weatherstripping along the underside, where the sash meets the frame. Thinner weatherstripping can be installed vertically along the frame to prevent drafts from entering between the window and the frame. Install double-paneled curtains on all the windows of the room. In the winter, these provide an extra buffer between drafts and you. In the summer, these solid curtains can be pulled shut when the sun is shining into the room, to help keep the room cool. These short-term measures can save some energy, but to really make that room comfortable, take a serious look at replacing the windows, particularly if they’re old or the frame or sash are visibly warped. HOLLYWOOD -- Warner Brothers has finally found its Peter Pan. After an exhausting search, unknown child actor Levi Miller has won the role. Last August he was seen in “The Spectacular Now,” with “Indulgence” star Shailene Woodley, Kyle Chandler and Jennifer Jason Leigh, which cost $2.5 million to shoot and earned $7 million. He also appeared in “Orca Park” and in guest shots in the series “Necessary Roughness” and “Terra Nova.” “Brothers and Sisters” producer Greg Berlanti has shifted the release date to July 17, 2015, which means NBC’s live production, which as yet has no Peter Pan, will air first on Dec. 4. Barkhad Abdi, Oscar nominated for “Captain Phillips,” confessed at award time he was broke and needed a job or he’d have to return to driving a limo in Detroit, has accepted producer/director Judd Apatow’s offer to star with Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton, SNL’s Bill Hader, Amy Schumer and wrestler John Cena in “Train Wreck.” *** Barbra Streisand’s long talked

about remake of “Gypsy” has some competition. Adam Shankman is producing and directing “Madame Rose,” based on the life of Gypsy Rose Lee and June Havoc’s mother, Mama Rose, for HBO. Shankman directed “Hairspray,” so it’s a safe bet that “Madame Rose” will be a musical. Disney’s “Frozen” grossed $1 billion at the box office even before its DVD release. Now Disney is planning a live Broadway musical production of “Frozen.” Kristen Bell, who voiced the lead in the film, already has offered to star in if Disney wants her. *** Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy are reteaming for “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2.” The original was made for $10 million and grossed $137 million in 2012. And get ready for a reboot of the 1984 hit “Ghostbusters.” “Ghostbusters 3” will have a new cast, though Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd have been asked to appear. Sadly, Harold Ramis, one of the co-writers and co-stars, who

Ferguson hosted “The Price is Right,” with his robot sidekick Geoff Peterson (who wears a “Price Is Right” nametag all the time) and Secretariat, while Drew Carey hosted “The Late, Late Show.” Ironically, both shows are taped in the same building at CBS Television City. • One of the best advertising campaigns in the world started when a small drugstore in South Dakota encouraged motorists to pull over for free ice water! When Ted and Dorothy Hustead bought the store in 1931, naming it Wall Drug, they struggled to get customers to stop as they drove by. Located near the South Dakota Badlands and Mount Rushmore, now there are more than 2.2 million visitors a year! Their small signs, patterned after Burma Shave, encouraged people to stop for water and 5¢coffee… still available today!

The quest the center of the Theater District of the city since quotient has always excited me more than the World War I, and has attracted millions of visitors intelligence quotient. from the world over since that time. Advertisers ~Eugene S. Wilson recognized it as a prime place for billboards early on. Owned originally by the New York Times Newspaper, the paper occupied the building for less than10 years. • The first large electric billboard was installed at Times Square in 1917. The first historical signage occurred in 1928 when the New York Times encircled the building with the first “zipper”headliner. The sign announced Herbert Hoover’s victory as President of the United States. • The Times building is not occupied by tenants anymore. When the current owners looked at renovating, it was decided that the building would just be used as a sign tower. The sign uses wind, solar and batteries for operation. The first sign of this type was installed by Ricoh in Osaka, Japan in 2003.

DVDs reviewed in this column will be available in stores the week of April 14, 2014. PHOTO: Judi Dench in “Philomena” PICKS OF THE WEEK “Philomena” (PG-13) -- At age 15, Philomena Lee became pregnant and was eventually forced to give up her child for adoption. The decision was made for her by the Catholic home for “fallen women” where she lived and worked. Fifty years later, Philomena (Judi Dench) embarked on a journey to find her child with the aid of a wry BBC journalist, Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan). The mismatched pair -- she has the faith and wisdom of common people, he has the cynical intellect of a jaded writer -- follow a trail from her native Ireland all the way to the U.S. “Philomena” strikes finely tuned chords of drama and comedy, pain and hope. Dench has the soft power to make you care about her struggle, and Coogan shows that his irreverent comedic side has a serious dramatic counterbalance. The film’s Oscar nominations this year included best picture, best adapted screenplay and a nomination for Judi Dench as best leading actress. “Ride Along” (PG-13) -- Ben (Kevin Hart) wants to propose to his girlfriend (Tika Sumpter), but first he has to prove himself through a buddy-cop action-comedy routine with her scowling older brother (Ice Cube.) Ben is a school security guard who wants to make it as a real cop. Cube plays a true-blue Atlanta cop who takes Ben on a day trip through the city to scare the little man, but they get caught up in a larger (and wholly forgettable) plot. Kevin Hart seems to be the only thing working here. You feel bad for him, screeching and flailing as hard as he can in order to keep the movie’s pulse up. The rest is weighed down by every buddy-cop cliche in the oldest book of cli-

Page 11 ches they could find. If the familiarity doesn’t lose you, then you will find action and experience some laughter, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” (PG-13) -- Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) is a meek guy and prolific daydreamer working in the photo department of a magazine. At work, he’s mocked mercilessly (by Adam Scott) in between longing glances at his crush, Cheryl (Kristen Wiig). Walter gets an abrupt rush of boldness and goes on an adventure to find a lost photo negative, suddenly blurring the lines between real life and his heroic fantasies. However, something’s just not right with the tone of the film. There are scenes that are intentionally confusing, seemingly to say something deep -- but the audience is left behind on whatever journey Stiller is trying to take. “The Nut Job” (PG) -- Surly the Squirrel (voiced by Will Arnett) plots a heist with some of his animated animal buddies. But they’re not stealing money or valuables, they’re robbing a nut store! Cause he’s a squirrel! Surly is not well liked by his peers in the park -- in fact, he’s been banished by a menacing raccoon with the smoldering tones of Liam Neeson’s voice. It doesn’t have the emotion or visual panache of Pixar, or the visual energy of Dreamworks, but it definitely has gimmicks. Fart jokes and catchy Korean pop tunes try to make up for everything else. The Lowdown On High Blood Pressure (NAPSA)—According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 68 million people—1 in 3 U.S. adults—have high blood pressure. Also known as hypertension, high blood pressure can lead to a stroke or heart attack. Fortunately, high blood pressure is a preventable and treatable risk factor for heart attack and stroke. To help, Joseph Young, M.D., a Kaiser Permanente internal medicine physician and the clinical hypertension lead with The Permanente Medical Group, answers a few basic questions and offers advice on how to keep your blood pressure in check. Q: Can you give a quick Blood Pressure 101? A: Blood pressure is just the pressure of blood flowing inside the body’s blood vessels. The top number is the pressure when the heart pumps at its peak. The bottom number is the pressure when the heart is relaxing and filling back up with blood. An ideal blood pressure is 119/79 or lower. Q: W h a t i s h i g h b l o o d pressure? A: If your blood pressure is 140/90 or higher, you have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. In the United States, 29 percent of the adult population, or roughly 70 million people, has high blood pressure. Weight, lack of physical activity, consuming too much salt or alcohol, stress, older age, genetics, family history and various diseases are contributing factors for high blood pressure. Fortunately, high blood pressure is preventable

Dr. Young offers advice on overcoming high blood pressure. and treatable with a healthy lifestyle and a number of well-tolerated, once-daily medications. Q: What are the main guidelines for healthy practices that can reduce risk? A: Regular physical activity is very important and helps to lower blood pressure. Pick something you enjoy—that will make it easier to stick with it. It doesn’t have to be fancy. You could just walk briskly at least 150 minutes a week, for example. Limit salt intake, too, because salt causes fluid retention, which increases blood pressure. Cook with un processed fresh fruits, vegetables and lean sources of protein. Don’t drink too much alcohol and do quit smoking. Smoking does not increase blood pressure but smoking combined with high blood pressure or with any other risk factor is especially dangerous. Q: What is the role of medication with high blood pressure? A: Medications are very impor-

tant for most people with high blood pressure. The medications we’ve used to treat high blood pressure have been around for decades. Over time, we’ve learned that combining medications in low doses works best and causes the fewest side effects. Today, most people with high blood pressure who need medications can control their condition with a once-a-day regimen with minor to no side effects. Q: Do you have any parting words of advice? A: High blood pressure in and of itself is just a number. We care about it because we know if the number is high, there is an increased risk of stroke and heart and kidney problems. If you have high blood pressure, have it checked regularly and have frequent adjustments made in your treatment regimen until it’s well controlled. If you don’t have a history of high blood pressure, it’s still best to have your blood pressure checked every two years. A commitment to reduce hypertension, strokes and heart attacks: Kaiser Permanente is recognized as a national leader in reducing and preventing heart attacks and strokes. Kaiser Permanente Colorado was recently hailed as a 2012 Million Hearts Hypertension Control Champion. In Northern California, 86 percent of Kaiser Permanente members with hypertension have their blood pressure under control compared to 50 percent nationally. For more information, visit www.kp.org.
