TIDBITS® HONORS

BLACK HISTORY MONTH February is Black History Month, and this week, Tidbits takes some time to recognize the achievements of some noted African-Americans in various fields. • U.S. President Gerald Ford officially declared this tribute in 1976 as part of America’s Bicentennial, prevailing upon citizens to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” But the observance traces its roots back to 1926, when African-American historian and author Carter Woodson declared the second week of February to be Negro History Week. Woodson, one of the first scholars to study black history was also the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. That particular week was chosen because the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass fell at that time. • Frederick Douglass was born a slave in Maryland around 1818. After being shuffled around from one plantation to another, he was given to a Baltimore family. Although it was illegal to teach slaves to read, the owner’s wife began teaching Douglass when he was 12. Soon he was reading newspapers and political material, molding his views on freedom and human rights. (continued on next page)

BLACK HISTORY MONTH (continued) • Frederick Douglass began teaching other slaves to read, a practice that went unnoticed for some months. When it was discovered, he was sent to a farmer who was well-known as a “slave-breaker.” After repeated beatings, Douglass was nearly psychologically shattered, and began to plot his escape. After one failed attempt, he was finally successful at age 18, boarding a train posing as a free black sailor. Less than 24 hours later, Douglass was sheltered in a safe house of a New York abolitionist. Eleven days later he married a free black woman who had helped him escape, a union that would endure 44 years. He spent the remainder of his life speaking out on racism, editing a black newspaper, writing three autobiographies, and gaining fame worldwide as an inspirational speaker. • On Independence Day, 1881, the doors of “Tuskegee Normal School for Colored Teachers” opened with a young principal named Booker T. Washington at the helm. This 25-year-old leader began classes in a rundown old church. The institute was founded by former slave Lewis Adams and George W. Campbell, an Alabama banker and former slaveholder, who were both committed to the education of blacks. Adams had no formal education, yet could read, write, and speak several languages. In 1882, the school bought a plantation, and new campus buildings were constructed. By 1900, the university sat on nearly 2,300 acres. Today it’s ranked as one of the “Best Regional Colleges in the South,” offering 35 bachelor’s degrees, (continued on page 4)

Pets, Pot Don’t Mix By Sam Mazzotta DEAR PAWS’S CORNER: I read a report this week that said more and more pets are being treated for “marijuana poisoning” from accidentally ingesting their owners’ medically prescribed marijuana. Is this true? Why haven’t we heard more about it? -- Concerned in California DEAR CONCERNED: As the number of states that allow medical marijuana to be prescribed increases, it’s likely you will hear more stories about pets being affected by ingesting this drug. A recent NBC News report estimated that calls to the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center reporting pet poisonings increased 30 percent between 2009 and 2013. However, Time magazine disputes that report, noting that the actual number of calls increased from 213 in 2009 to about 320 last year -- a very small percentage of the 18,000 total calls the APCC gets each year from owners. My take on the issue is this: Marijuana is a drug, so owners need to use common sense. You wouldn’t leave other prescriptions lying around for the dog or cat to eat. So don’t

February 17 - February 23, 2014 leave your stash lying around. Further, many patients use baked goods to ingest marijuana rather than smoking it. “Pot brownies,” for example, contain chocolate, which is definitely dangerous to dogs and can cause severe symptoms when eaten. The APCC gets far more calls about poisoning from chocolate ingestion than from any other substance, Time noted. That said, pet owners who see or suspect their dog or cat has ingested marijuana should contact their veterinarian for advice. They also should watch their pet for unusual symptoms, such as lethargy, excessive drooling, diarrhea or incontinence, and take them to the vet immediately if they begin experiencing these or any other problems. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Tidbits of Rogue Valley BLACK HISTORY MONTH (continued) 12 masters’ programs, an architecture program, two doctoral degree programs, and a school of veterinary medicine. • Born into slavery, George Washington Carver went on to become one of the world’s most renowned botanists and scientists. Because the soil of the south had become depleted by planting nothing but cotton for years, Carver developed methods of improving the soil through crop rotation. Alternating the cotton planting with peanuts, soybeans, and sweet potatoes, nitrogen was restored to the soil while providing nutritious crops for farm families. Through years of research and development, Carver came up with 300 uses for peanuts, including cosmetics, plastics, gasoline, adhesives, linoleum, synthetic rubber, and nitroglycerin. He also discovered hundreds of uses for soybeans, pecans, and sweet potatoes, and developed 536 different dyes while experimenting with plant leaves, fruit, stems, and roots. The scuppernong grape alone yielded 49 of these dyes. At age 32, Carver was invited by Booker T. Washington, the president of Tuskegee Institute, to head up the school’s Agriculture Department, and Carver remained there as an educator for 47 years, all the while continuing his famous research. • On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson stepped to the plate at Ebbets Field as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the first African-American to play major (continued on next page)

by Samantha Weaver It was novelist, poet and playwright Gertrude Stein who made the following sage observation: “Everybody knows if you are too careful, you are so occupied in being careful that you are sure to stumble over something.” Some people enjoy novelty when dining out, but restaurateurs take a big risk when adding new items to a menu; it seems that less than a third of diners will actually try a new menu item. Two-thirds of all Tony award-winning composers and lyricists have been Jewish. Everyone knows you should not drive while under the influence of alcohol, but riding a bike? A stationary bike? It seems that in Tennessee in 2007, a woman was arrested at her gym while riding an exercise bicycle while drunk. BUI, or simply disorderly conduct? The record isn’t clear. If insects give you the creepy-crawlies, you might not want to read the following tidbit: Researchers have discovered a kind of caterpillar that emits a sound eerily like a human scream. This particular species is often a victim of predatory wasps. When the wasps approach, the caterpillar rubs two special organs together to produce the sound. The “scream” calls a troop of ants that protect the caterpillar, and in return the caterpillar secretes an amino acid that the ants need. The name of the state of Vermont comes from the French “mont vert,” which means “green mountain.” (If the explorers who named the state saw green mountains, they obviously were not there in the winter.) Thought for the Day: “I don’t trust a man who uses the word evil 18 times in 10 minutes. If you’re half evil, nothing soothes you more than to think the person you are opposed to is totally evil.” -- Norman Mailer (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Try to say as little as possible about the work you’re doing through the end of the month. Then you can make your announcement and accept your well-deserved plaudits. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You face a more difficult challenge than you expected. But with that strong Taurean determination, you should be able to deal with it successfully by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Before you act on your “feelings” about that upcoming decision, it might be wise to do a little fact-checking first. You could be very much surprised by what you don’t find. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A recent workplace success can open some doors that were previously closed to you. On a personal level, expect to receive some important news from a longtime friend and colleague. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Put your wounded pride aside and do what you must to heal that misunderstanding before it takes a potentially irreversible turn and leaves you regretting the loss of a good friend. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) One way to kick a less-than-active social life into high gear or rebuild an outdated Rolodex file is to throw one of your well-organized get-togethers for friends and associates. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Getting out of an obligation you didn’t really want to take on can be tricky. An honest explanation of the circumstances

can help. Next time, pay more attention to your usually keen instincts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Use your Scorpion logic to push for a no-nonsense approach to a perplexing situation. This could help keep present and potential problems from creating more confusion. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A friend’s problem might take more time than you want to give. But staying with it once again proves the depth of your Sagittarian friendship and loyalty. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Sea Goat can benefit from an extra dose of self-confidence to unsettle your detractors, giving you the advantage of putting on a strong presentation of your position. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might want to ask a friend or relative for advice on an ongoing personal matter. But be careful not to give away information you might later wish you had kept secret. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Use the weekend for a creativity break to help restore your spiritual energy. Once that’s done, you’ll be back and more than ready to tackle whatever challenge you need to face. BORN THIS WEEK: You get great joy out of creating beautiful things and sharing them with others who appreciate them. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

On Feb. 26, 1564, poet and playwright Christopher Marlowe is baptized in Canterbury, England, two months before the birth of his fellow playwright William Shakespeare. Historians believe Marlowe served as a spy for Queen Elizabeth while at Cambridge. On Feb. 25, 1862, the U.S. Congress passes the Legal Tender Act, authorizing the use of paper notes to pay the government’s bills. This ended the long-standing policy of using only gold or silver in transactions, and it allowed the government to finance the enormously costly Civil War. On Feb. 27, 1915, “The Valley of Fear” by Arthur Conan Doyle is published. Sherlock Holmes had been a popular character since he first appeared in the story “A Study in Scarlet” in 1887. The detective was modeled partly on Dr. Joseph Bell, a medical-school teacher at the University of Edinburgh. On March 2, 1944, a train stops in a tunnel near Salerno, Italy, and more than 500 people on board suffocate and die. The train’s locomotives were burning low-grade coal substitutes that produced an excess of odorless and toxic carbon monoxide. Approximately 520 passengers were asphyxiated. On March 1, 1961, President John F. Kennedy establishes the Peace Corps as a new agency within the Department of State, which would send trained American men and women to foreign nations to assist in development efforts. On Feb. 24, 1981, socialite Jean Harris is convicted of murdering Dr. Herman Tarnower, the author of the bestselling “The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet.” Harris claimed that she had been trying to kill herself but that Tarnower was shot when he tried to wrestle the gun away from her. He was shot four times.

Thieves Nabbed in Fraud Schemes The Department of Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General has nailed more thieves who’ve stolen money. In this case, it was from the program for government contracts for companies owned by service-disabled veterans, as well as for health-care benefits. New Jersey -- A business owner was charged in a $1.2 million procurement fraud. The owner claimed that her company was a service-disabled veteran-owned small business. The business was furniture, which she sold to industrial and government customers. She was never in the military; neither was her husband. Her father-in-law, however, was a retired veteran. The thief claimed that her father-in-law was the owner of the business. Even if he was, he wasn’t service-disabled. She could go to jail for 20 years and face a quarter-million dollar fine if found guilty. New Mexico -- A construction-company owner pled guilty to defrauding the service-disabled-veterans pro-

gram to the tune of $11 million for its work in National Cemeteries. His son-in-law pleaded guilty as well. There was a veteran in the mix, however: A step-brother was a service-disabled veteran who lived in another state. He was paid a small weekly amount for them to use his name and disabled status. When necessary, his signature was forged on documents. Washington, D.C. -- A former Department of Defense employee was nabbed for $2.5 million in health-care fraud for submitting false claims for health-care benefits overseas. The fraudulent claims were for prescriptions and medical items from a doctor where the employee was stationed. He managed to scam both the Foreign Service Benefit Plan as well as the VA’s Foreign Medical Program. If found guilty, he will go to prison for a very long time, with long sentences for each of the false claims. Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@ gmail.com. Wintertime Roof Leaks Q: This has been a winter of unusually stormy and snowy weather, and it looks like my house isn’t holding up too well. After noticing a water stain on an upstairs ceiling I went into the attic and found water stains on several boxes and a general damp smell. Trouble is, there is still ice and snow coating the rooftop, and I don’t feel safe going outside. How can I deal with this? -- George in Virginia A: Climbing onto the roof is definitely not safe in the midst of ice and snow, but you do need to stop water from entering, of course. You can set up a temporary patch from inside the attic, but keep in mind it is very temporary -- you’ll need to check it frequently until warmer weather comes and the roof can be properly repaired. In the attic, trace the water leak to its source. A leak can occur farther up a pitched roof and trickle down the rafters to drip elsewhere. If the water stains follow a path, trace that path upward to where the water marks end and check that area of the roof’s underlayment for damage, holes or apparent water entry points. Sometimes as the sun melts the ice and snow on the roof, you will be lucky (or unlucky) enough to see water actually dripping through. Now that you’ve located the leak (or leaks), you need to control the direction of the drip, so it no longer runs down the rafters but instead into a bucket to catch the water. Do this by placing a large nail in the center of the leak and tapping it through the roof’s sheathing until it reaches the shingle outside. “But Sam,” you say, “I’m trying to fix the leak, not create one!” True, but the damage is already done. For now you need to contain it until a better repair can be made.

FAMOUS CANADIANS KEANU REEVES

Underneath the nail you just punched through the underside of the roof, place a bucket to catch drips. Now the water isn’t running all over the attic. Next, put on a dust mask and cut away water-damaged insulation from around the hole. This clears the area you need to patch and helps prevent mold growth. Let the area dry for a day or two; hopefully much of the ice and snow will melt from the rooftop during this time. At any rate, you need the underside of the roof to be fairly dry so that a patch will hold. Once the area surrounding the hole is dry to the touch, you can patch it. Remove the nail from the hole. Make sure the area is very dry. You also might want to warm the area slightly with a hair dryer if it’s a cold day, so that the patch material adheres. Fill the hole with roofing cement or roof patch compound (available at home-improvement stores -- you’ll need just a small amount) and smooth out to the sides. In some cases, with spring coming, this small plug is all you need. But some DIYers add a little insurance by cutting a thin sheet of plywood into a square that extends a couple inches beyond the hole on each side, and tacking that tightly against the hole using roofing cement (not nails). Mark the patched area with brightly colored chalk or some other easy-to-see material. When the weather warms, you or a roofing professional must inspect the roof to locate and repair the damage. as the patch will give you only a few months’ reprieve. The roof may be damaged in other areas, or there could be undetected water problems as well. HOME TIP: Proper attic ventilation is important at all times, but especially when the roof is leaking, as the airflow helps reduce mold growth. Make sure the attic vents aren’t blocked by boxes or deliberately closed off. Send your questions or home tips to ask@ thisisahammer.com.
