This week, Tidbits cracks open the geography books to study several points across the globe that begin with the letter “T”. • Nestled on the shores of Puget Sound, with a stunning view of nearby Mount Rainier, sits Tacoma, Washington, nicknamed the “City of Destiny.” In 1792, Captain George Vancouver became the first European to see Mount Rainier, originally called Mount Tahoma, from the Native American word for “mother of waters.” Vancouver named the peak for his friend Rear Admiral Peter Rainier. In 1911, Frank Mars and his wife Ethel began making and selling a variety of butter-cream candies from their Tacoma kitchen, a venture that would eventually become the Mars Candy Company, maker of the Milky Way. Another sweet treat, almond roca, also had its beginnings in Tacoma. • Florida’s state capital Tallahassee is the 128th largest city in the United States. Its name comes from an old Muskogean Indian word translated as “old fields.” The first European explorer to arrive there was Spaniard Hernando deSoto in 1539. Tallahassee became the capital in 1824, with a log cabin as the first Capitol Building. Out of Florida’s 497 verified species of birds, 372 of them can be seen in Tallahassee. turn the page for more!

“T” TOWNS (continued) • When Taipei 101 opened in 2004, this 101-floor skyscraper grabbed the title of world’s tallest building and remained so until 2010. It’s located in Taipei City, the largest city in Taiwan and capital of the Republic of China. The city was founded in the early 1700s and developed into an important overseas trade center over the next 100 years. It’s home to several ornate temples, including the Longshan Temple, constructed in 1738. In 1945, the temple was badly damaged when it was hit by American bombers who believed the Japanese were hiding armaments inside. • On the northwest shore of Lake Ontario lies Toronto, Canada’s largest city. The city takes its name from an Iroquois word meaning “place where trees stand in the water.” Toronto ranks high on the list of the world’s “most livable cities” based on quality of living. Its low crime rate also makes it one of the safest major cities in North America. The homicide rate there is about 3.3 per 100,000 people, compared with Atlanta, Georgia at 19.7. Covering an area of 243 sq. miles (630 sq. km), Toronto has about 2.6 million residents, 49% of whom were born outside Canada. It’s obvious the city’s residents enjoy ice sports, as there are 52 outdoor ice skating rinks in the city. • Canada isn’t the only place where you’ll find Toronto. There are five U.S. states with a community by that name – Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Ohio, and South Dakota. (continued on page 4)

Do Pets Really Need Vitamins? By Sam Mazzotta DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor insists that giving vitamin supplements and “homeopathic” treatments to her dog “Gracie” is key to her health. I disagree that a pet needs so much extra help. Doesn’t pet food provide enough nutrients? -- Les in San Diego DEAR LES: That answer really depends on the pet and the type of food it’s eating, and partly on the disposition of the owner. Dogs are living beings just like us, and need regular feeding, exercise and medications when they’re sick. Owners naturally want their pet to be as healthy as possible, which is why the pet supplement market continues to grow. Want your dog to have a shiny coat? There’s a vitamin for that. Vitamin and mineral supplements for pets are as varied as similar supplements for adults, and should be given after an owner has done his or her homework on the best vitamins for their pet. Veterinarians often recommend specific supplements to help pets stay

February 3 - February 9, 2014 healthy or recover after an illness or injury. Senior pets also frequently are given certain supplements to help with sore joints and other health problems that accompany aging. Homeopathic remedies also are popular. Many owners swear by off-the-shelf general treatments like Rescue Remedy, which helps calm anxious pets. Pet foods, while providing all-around nutrition for dogs of different sizes, increasingly have added supplements to their formulas. Owners should be aware of which specific supplements are in their pet’s food, to avoid giving too much of a particular vitamin or mineral. And of course, check with your pet’s veterinarian about whether supplements are needed, what kind and how much. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

“T” TOWNS (continued) • Five U.S. states and a Canadian province have also honored the Native American leader of the Shawnee by naming a community Tecumseh. Born in Ohio, Tecumseh (“Shooting Star” or “Panther Across the Sky”) grew up to be a key figure in the War of 1812. He is quoted with these words of wisdom: “Live your life so that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life.” • Back in 1950, NBC radio was home to a popular radio quiz show known as Truth or Consequences. Looking for a creative way to celebrate the program’s tenth anniversary, the host Ralph Edwards announced that he would air the program from the first American town to rename itself after the show. Hot Springs, New Mexico jumped at the chance, and on March 31 of that year, the residents voted in favor of the switch, and the very next day, Ralph Edwards and the crew flew in for the anniversary broadcast. For the next 50 years, Edwards visited the town each May for their annual fiesta. Every April 1, Truth or Consequences, or “T or C” as the locals call it, celebrates Ralph Edwards Day. • A small Japanese fishing village named Edo founded around the year 1200 has grown to the world’s most populous metropolitan area with 8,949,447 residents. Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868, when it became the imperial capital. Tokyo’s entire urban area has a population of 35,623,327. The city had already reached 1,000,000 people back in the 1720s. It’s not only the most populous city in the world, it’s also the most expensive, with the highest cost of living worldwide. (continued on page 5)

by Samantha Weaver It was famed cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead who made the following sage observation: One of the oldest human needs is having someone to wonder where you are when you don’t come home at night. If youre like the average American, you will eat about 150 bananas this year -- 26 pounds worth. Up until the 1500s, the accepted way of dealing with a patient who was hemorrhaging was to cauterize the wound, often with boiling oil or red-hot irons. It was in the latter part of the 16th century that a French surgeon named Ambroise Pare began tying off the broken blood vessels with cord. Thats pretty much what surgeons do today. Its been estimated that a million pigeons live in New York City. When pop star Christina Aguilera is on tour, she insists on having a police escort. She hates to be stuck in traffic. Next time youre heading to Illinois, you can stop off in Metropolis and visit the self-declared birthplace of Superman. In honor of their hometown superhero, the citizens erected a 15-foot bronze statue of him on Main Street. It was Abraham Lincoln who signed into law the legislation that created the Secret Service. That very night, he was assassinated. Those who study such things say that on the 13th of every month, triskaidekaphobia causes a loss of $83 million to American business due to absenteeism from work and other disruptions. In the United States, more babies are born on Oct. 5 than on any other day of the year. If you do the math, youll find that New Years Eve is 9 months and 5 days before that. Thought for the Day: Show me a hero, and I will write you a tragedy. -- F. Scott Fitzgerald (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Doing something nice for others is typical of the generous Arian. But be prepared for some jealous types who might try to question one of your more recent acts of kindness. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re eager to take on new responsibilities. But before you do, you might want to check out exactly what would be required of you so that you don’t face any “surprises” later. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It might be best to put off an important decision until a fluctuating situation becomes more stable. Recently received news could help resolve a long-standing family matter. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) If you still have a problem getting that information gap closed, you might consider asking a higher authority to resolve the matter, leaving you free to move on to another project. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A family matter needs to be dealt with at the start of the week. Once it’s resolved, the Big Cat can devote more attention to that new opportunity that seems to hold so much potential. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Pay attention to those niggling doubts. They could be warning you not to make any major decisions until you’ve checked them out -- especially where money matters might be involved. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business venture might need more of your attention than you are able to provide. Consider asking a trusted friend or family member to help you work through this time crunch.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A more-positive aspect helps you get a clearer focus on how to handle your time so that you can deal with several responsibilities that are just now showing up on your schedule. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A very close friend (you know who that is!) has advice that could help you work through a confusing situation. So put your pride aside and ask for it. You’ll be glad you did. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A workplace situation could turn a bit tense. The best way to handle it is to confront it and deal with it openly. Doing so can help reveal the underlying reasons for the problem. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A colleague’s remarks appear to be especially cutting. But don’t waste your time or your energy trying to deal with the situation. You have more important things to do. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Support for your work comes as a surprise from someone you thought was critical or, at least, indifferent. Your spouse or partner has big plans for the weekend. On Feb. 11, 1858, Marie-Bernarde Soubirous, a 14-year-old French peasant girl, claims to have seen the Virgin Mary. The apparitions occurred in a grotto of a rock promontory near Lourdes, France. Today millions of people travel to Lourdes every year to visit the grotto, whose waters supposedly have curative powers. On Feb. 12, 1912, Hsian-T’ung, the last emperor of China, is forced to abdicate. A provisional government was established in his place, ending 267 years of Manchu rule in China and 2,000 years of imperial rule. The former emperor was only 6 years old. On Feb. 16, 1923 in Thebes, Egypt, English archaeologist Howard Carter enters the sealed burial chamber of the ancient Egyptian ruler King Tutankhamen. The chamber was virtually intact, with its treasures and the perfectly preserved mummy of King Tut untouched after more than 3,000 years. On Feb. 13, 1945, the most controversial episode in the Allied air war against Germany begins as hundreds of British bombers descend on Dresden, Germany. With two days, the city was a smoldering ruin. Dresden had been regarded as one the world’s most beautiful cities for its architecture and museums. On Feb. 15, 1950, Walt Disney’s animated feature “Cinderella” opens in theaters. Disney’s full-length animated feature films began in 1937 with “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Disney had risked $1.5 million of his own money on the venture. On Feb. 14, 1962, President John F. Kennedy authorizes U.S. military advisers in Vietnam to return fire if fired upon. Kennedy was acknowledging that U.S. forces were involved in the fighting, but he wished to downplay any appearance of increased American involvement in the war.

Suicide Rates Up for Young Veterans The January 2014 Suicide Data Update has been released by the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the news is not good. Suicides are up in two groups of veterans who utilized the VA health system: young males (ages 18-24) and women. The rate of female veterans’ suicides has climbed 31.2 percent for VA users. Does that not pierce your heart? The 2014 update took the 2012 report, which covered 2009 to 2011, and compared to the current figures. There are pockets of positive news. Taken in an overall trend, the rate of suicide among male veterans aged 3564 who utilize VA hospital programs has decreased by 30 percent, and is down 16 percent for all ages. (The overall rate among those who don’t use the VA for help has increased by 60 percent.) One thing is clear based on the figures for all male veterans: Getting help at the VA does work.

If you’ve had thoughts of suicide, call this hotline number 1-800-273-8255 and press 1. Or send a text message to 38255. If you have access to a computer, go to www. veteranscrisisline.net/ and you can chat online. You can read the warning signs, take a self quiz, check resources and more. If you’re near a VA facility, go there. Tell them the truth about how you’re feeling. Ask to be tested for PTSD, if you haven’t been already. Tell them you’d like to try the Hope Box, the customized cell phone app (designed by the VA in Portand, Ore., and currently in clinical trials #NCT01982773 at ClinicalTrials.gov) Your best bet is to call that hotline phone number -- right now. Don’t wait. They can help you. You CAN get better. Freddy Groves regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. On Feb. 10, 1996, after three hours, world chess champion Gary Kasparov loses the first game of a six-game match against Deep Blue, an IBM computer capable of evaluating 200 million moves per second. Kasparov was ultimately victorious and bested Deep Blue with three wins and two ties and took home the $400,000 prize.
