FEATURED: SAWFISH NEWS, P. 5

Ten months ago, the Bank of Everglades building was donated to the Everglades Society for Historic Preservation, Inc. (ESHP), a local non-profit organization committed to preserving the history and heritage of the Everglades area. Bob Flick generously gave the building to ESHP for the purpose of protecting and rehabilitating this 1927 structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In less than a year ESHP has made significant progress towards its goal to bring the building back to its original elegance and to serve as the Everglades Area Visitor Center as well as the Trail Town Headquarters. A new roof has been installed and architectural plans are near completion. In addition to the visitor center, a gift shop and a coffee bar on the first floor, there will be sufficient space for community events and small gatherings. On the second-floor office and retail space will be available. The new Visitor Center, owned and operated by our non-profit historic society, will be an information center for the entire COMMUNITY. Years ago, we had a Chamber of Commerce, and we also had a Welcome Center in Carnestown at CR29/US41; this was all before Hurricane Irma. After Irma, ESHP stepped up to the plate and opened a new Visitor Center in the heart of Everglades City to serve as a resource for all the parks, restaurants, hotels, airboat rides, kayak tours, etc. for the surrounding area, not just Everglades City. That is why we are now reaching out to the entire community, to ALL businesses, to ask you to help support ESHP’s continued efforts with the renovation of the historic Bank of Everglades building. Since March 2021 ESHP has accomplished much, spending $84,522.06 to clean out the building, tent it for termites, do exploratory demolition, complete engineering and structural analysis reports, architectural drawings, and the new roof! ESHP has been very busy raising funds to pay for all of these repairs and services; we will continue with frequent events to raise funds. We are also reaching out to the community to see if twenty-two businesses would like to join the challenge for our window project. We plan to replicate the original 4’ x 8’ casement windows which will also be hurricane proof. The cost of each window is $3,400 which includes installation. There are 22 windows, 8 on each side, 4 in the front and 2 in the back. Businesses will be able to choose (first come, first serve) the window they would like to sponsor, and the name of the business will be placed on a plaque under the window. For more information about the Bank of Everglades project, visit our project website www.saveboe.com or call Patty Huff at 239-719-0020. Thank you for all your help!
