Personal Statement This portfolio is a collection of studio projects from my undergraduate program at the Texas A&M School of Architecture. These are the projects that I feel best represent my current skills and progress over the last four years. I believe that each design and proposal has driven my knowledge and passion for architecture and led me closer to where I want to be in the future.

Traditions act as the grounding force that keeps a community rooted in its identity. At the same time, they serve as hinge points, allowing for the opening of new chapters, the adaptation to changing circumstances, and the incorporation of fresh ideas. The Aggieland Visitor Center is a building that follows a grid as grounding roots that give a glimpse into the resilience and dynamic nature of Texas A&M’s sense of identity. This project is a new visitor center with areas for staff and a visitor program including an auditorium and lobby area. The rectilinear massing originated from an analysis based on the site context and the efficiency so that this building would provide a smooth transition for visitors. An orthogonal form with modular casework characterized by a systematic, grid-based layout allows for efficient use of space, clarity in wayfinding, 01. and support of a mass timber structure.

Moreover, with the integration of the grid and use of modules for service areas that wrap around the building, it facilitates the integration of systems, in particular a Variable Air Volume system, ensuring that the designated spaces are well-organized, accessible, and stackable. The Aggie network is a community that connects you immediately. Our project approaches the visitor center as a glimpse into the sense of belonging through grounding oneself in tradition. The presence of traditions helps maintain a sense of continuity and provides a framework for evolution and innovation.

Located in the Gràcia neighborhood of Barcelona, the Abaceria Market is a community space that many have loved for decades. Over the years, it has lost its usable nature and requires an updated program and a new liveliness. Double Topography is an engaging and inviting space that will be built in place of the current steel structure on the site. The new program’s architectural design helps to extend into the community while providing a space that connects the city and nature. The project obtained its unique form from the streams that carved through Barcelona’s clay topography.

Crafted by mass timber, ceramic tiles, and flexbrick, the structure uses locally sourced, traditional materials. The structural system uses traditional Catalan architectural elements such as wooden arches and beams, creating the five main axes that produce the specified spaces throughout the project. Glazing and water elements were also utilized to animate the structure, exposing the activities within and allowing people to engage at multiple levels on both the interior and exterior. The underground takes you through a promenade of water that varies in depth and usage. The groundlevel glass balconies are used to bring the neighborhood into the site. As for the above ground, there is an accessible green roof, allowing for more greenery to thrive in Gràcia. The neighborhood’s public space is reimagined with the roof and provides something meaningful and functional.

Drawing is the act of replacing reality with representation, that is, substituting objects with images encoded in each of the graphic representation systems. In architecture, graphics stimulate the imagination and are the basis of thinking since they constitute our code of communication and configure our ability to express ourselves in disciplinary terms.

In fact, at first, the drawing is constructed in the mind of the architect before it looks for support from any instrument. These collages are part of an assignment during my semester abroad. We had to represent the places we visited as a class trip and portray them according to previous research and our experience there. We had the option to choose from many different types of mediums and media. I decided to make collages of photographs I had taken in various locations throughout the trips and align them to one shared concept.

In this collage, I recognized the relation of the height of the photos. The skyline photo along the bottom is from one of the highest rooftops in the city. From there, it reminded me of all the towering objects we had seen, from museums to housing and schools.

Using this concept, I decided to keep the city’s verticality as the primary focus.

Towering Above The Future

In this collage, I highlighted more of the history of Portugal. This one is from a combination of cities rather than one, but I found that the past was at the core of all of them. The respect for the art and form of the architecture is what stood out, so I focused on these elements.

Arching Over The Past

Our proposed Buffalo Gap Town Center consists of four proposed buildings: a cafe & gift shop, an art gallery, an event hall, and a city hall. Two of the four buildings will be exhibited here: the event hall and the cafe & gift shop. Working alongside Landscape Architecture students, the buildings are placed along a newly proposed road and master plan that forms the primary axis of the town. When deciding on the buildings to design for the town center, great importance was noted where municipal buildings required an update and added more activity-focused spaces that could draw in tourists. The Cafe & Gift Shop backs up to the nature preserve and park and also faces the main road. In the front, there is plenty of space to allow people to walk by with trees that provide greenery and natural life. The dog-trot in the center of the building allows for a cohesive connection to the park and a covered patio space for dining with a view of the surrounding nature. Directly across from the cafe sits the Event Hall, creating a secondary axis between the two buildings. The hall’s wrap-around porch helps facilitate the transition into the space and offers an option for outdoor gathering places as well. This building will be a venue to host community events such as concerts, speakers, conferences, and other significant events.

Cuero, Texas, is a small town based around a courthouse square. It is the county seat of DeWitt County and a Texas Target Community, areas that the Department of Architecture studies to create engagement and sustainable plans for. Our team was to select a site within the nine-square layout around the central courthouse to propose housing for student teachers. The challenge was to consider the many different types of tenure that each person or family could be under, so they would need to feel comfortable in a communal living situation 01. with others that they may not be familiar with. We sought to create a space that allows each person to feel independent in their own units but also to have a variety of shared spaces to serve daily needs and social purposes. The site location allows residents to enjoy the benefits of the central part of town and be relatively close to the district schools for an easy commute. After researching the city and analyzing the surrounding buildings, we found what we consider the best location for our housing. A weather analysis assisted with the building orientation as well. This project aims to incentivize job opportunities and attempt to bring more student teachers to the rural, 02. smaller school districts throughout Texas.

Villa Schue is a house designed by Adolf Loos in 1912 in Vienna, Austria, for lawyer Gustav Scheu and his wife Helen. For the first time, Loos used the principle of terracing.

This house is a clear example of Loos’s Raumplan, his way of designing not by plan but by spaces, each with its own function and height. He designed a three-story, flat-roofed house in which the two levels above the ground floor were successively smaller in area, thereby creating spaces for outdoor terraces. The building has four floors: a basement level, ground floor, first floor, and second floor, where another house was built entirely independent from the rest of the home. Plans, elevations, and a section were reproduced from the original drawings, along with the creation of an adjacency matrix to further explore the relation of spaces to one another. Through building a physical model, the levels were broken down into more prominent units to study the form more clearly. The acrylic material represents the walls and floors, and the room and circulation are made up of blocks, almost to take an x-ray of the house. Breaking apart the spaces in this way allowed us to play with the form and focus on specific areas at a time. Loos has created a very intricate house, not in its ornamentation but in its form and functionality. This study highlighted the intentionality behind his organization, circulation methods, and leveling and height differences.

Architectural beauty is attainable through a series of operations and proportions associated with knowledge of the past, present, and future possibilities. With such familiarity, one can establish a tie between time to generate a design portraying the understanding of mechanisms while, at the same time, broadening the boundaries between what is known and what can be.

In the heart of the Third Ward in Houston, Texas, the Project Row Houses community is a hub for fluorescent culture and tradition.

Presently, about 33,000 residents remain, and despite the efforts to gentrify the area, residents and community leaders have begun an effort to preserve, protect, and celebrate the rich history and heritage.

Intending to uphold the people’s character here, we have designed a community art center. Joint of Three is where anyone from any background can express themselves.

As the community produces works of art, it becomes a reality that there are few ways in which they can showcase their work to their peers. Therefore, this center is a prime location for honoring the area’s heritage and exhibiting what its residents have to offer. With the implementation of organization through rotation and division, part-to-whole relationships, and processional circulation, Joint of Three highlights everything that the Third Ward encapsulates. It serves as a place where the community can unify their love for art while celebrating their remarkable culture.

Exploring the manipulation of 3D forms using boolean operations and various other functions, we started with a cube and had to strategically remove parts of the form to make a new object. Color, positive and negative space, and materiality were studied throughout the process. The final model includes a caved-in space that feels secure yet still exposed due to the elements shadowing the interior. Frank Stella’s work served as inspiration for the color choices.

The range of colors within the art was mindfully applied to the model. The warmer colors were focused on the exterior, and the interior houses the cooler colors in the palette.

The Spatial Cube: These compositions are hierarchical compositions where we focused solely on creating spaces, slot conditions, and a functional grid. My first attempt is the top row and my second is the middle row. The bottom row represents the section and plan of the physical models I built from these compositions.

Collisions: We were tasked with finding three images, which I took on my walk to the studio. We had to trace each image one on top of the other. Next was to trace the combined image’s critical construction lines, creating a positive/negative composition by interpreting the main elements. Using the same technique, we had to draw a synthesis of the original composition.

Defining Space: We had to arrange objects on the grid in an order that best illustrates a figure-ground composition demonstrating spatial hierarchy and slot conditions. The concepts of sequence, slot conditions, defined and implied space, and hierarchy were all heavily emphasized in this project. The drawings are in chronological order from top to bottom.

Transparency: Two grids were drawn based on the Fibonacci sequence and the golden section. We then had to create masses and voids within the grids. Color compositions were made digitally to see how the colors interacted between the two drawings, highlighting transparency. I used tetrad color schemes to grasp the opacities that the different masses created.
