Software Revit, InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop Duration 3 terms The nature center’s main aim is to immerses kids into their natural surroundings and reengage them with the bes t for m of lear ning: hands on. The duality of this project is that it also preser ves land from fur ther being developed in the south King County region of Washington state . These two prompts for the nature center then lend to infor ming each other in the progr am. The kids lear n about preser vation and sustainability while the birds affected by development find a new home . The kids would lear n in-depth about the birds through the fir st hand exper ience of inter acting with them at the r aptor center located just outside of the indoor facility.

Need being established, the site plays a crucial role to develop the narrative .

Feder al Way Washington is by and lar ge known as a retail hub with some sizable housing developments around it. Cur rently there is not one place in the city that celebr ates the region it is nestled in. Proving the point that you do not have to be in a major urban city to be cut off from nature . The location in combination with the cit ies attitude cultivates an unpleasant tr uth: low income families and an area that does not value its natur al resources. This all results in the local gr aduation r ate of just 72%. The hope of the center is to r aise this r ate , reengage the city with their valuable resource , and create an identity for the city r ather then a stop off on the way to Seattle .

The existing building had the entire south por tion of the building dedicated to the practices of the catholic church, and so it was quiet convoluted. It made sense to build a new component to the building and make the space much more functional.

T h e c i t y i s b y a n d l a r g e k n o w n a s a r e t a i l h u b that is constantly developing projects that do not contribute to the cities identify or community atmosphere. Consequently the city continues to sprawl and the landscape in which they are situated continues to shrink. Of cour se it is the Pacific Nor thwest so there is a decent amount of green speckled throughout the landscape but there is not a lot of publically accessible tree coverage. The site I chose sits on one of the last major green spots, not to mention that there is only area with public tree coverage larger then 15 acres protected by l aw.

02 BLOK A MODULAR BENCH

Fall 2016 Type Furniture Design Size L 5’-6” x W 14” x H 18” Tools Table saw, planer, joiner, metal lathe, belt sander, domino machine and drill press.

Duration 8 weeks The main prompt of the furniture studio was to create a storage unit. The secondary prompt was to take a space within Lawrence Hall (the UO architecture building) and find an anomaly to use as a point of departure. The concept was that you begin from inspiration rather then the typical function start point that is assumed with furniture or product design.

I chose a space that is near the fire stair. It is has an unusual casted indent in the concrete form. I started with that feature as the minor details in my piece and then stood back and used the circulation block as a large form and lastly the idea for the entire piece I looked at Lawrence Hall as a whole of jumbled parts.

The component of my piece that truly connects to the ideals of Lawrence Hall is the notion of constant movement. BLOK (the Danish word for building block) can be transformed by switching the storage cubes or even building one larger cube in the future. The possibilities are endless as long as it fits width wise within the frame.

03 T H E H I D E AWAY SAUNA

Summer 2016 Type New Construction Size 67 sq. meters (726 sq ft) Software Rhino, Vray, AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator Duration 6 weeks The summer of 2016 I went to study in Copenhagen Denmark at the Danish Institute of Study Abroad. While there I par ticipated in a smaller group project but the main task was to design a sauna on the harbor. We had freedom to choose our own site as long as it had justification. In general there are already a lot of saunas located in the central por tion of the city so I knew that I wanted to move away from the core. Copenhagen is a ver y livable place and because of this the cities population is expanding at a quick rate (average 1,000 new people a month).

The nor thern par t of the city, Nordhaven, has plans for a large development to accommodate this growth, and with this in mind I knew that they would potentially need amenities such as a sauna.  With all the hustle and bustle of a growing city, my sauna design is meant to remind you that it is impor tant to step down and away from it all to revitalize oneself.

This project is in an area that is in the process of being redeveloped, hence the idea behind the name The Hideaway. The concept is driven by the feeling of escaping from busy city. Stepping the building down and off of the land it gives the users a separation not only geographically but also in the mindset they take as they journey to the sauna. The path to the sauna experience is first wooded and then made smaller by the ser vice buildings. The journey is compressed and released until the user is rewarded with the view of Trekoner for t (a historic site for many battles in Denmark’s histor y).

The form then is borrowed from the histor y of the area’s maritime tradition. By maintaining the gable roof and minimal form the boat house mantra is understood. Externally, reclaimed white pine cladding lends a maritime vernacular and this message is continued internally with exposed cedar beams.

04 B ACKYARD FARMING STORE

Spring 2016 Type Adaptive Reuse Size 3,538 sq. ft.

Software AutoCAD Duration 10 weeks The Eugene Backyard Farming store currently ser ves function much more then form. The prompt was to create a high end design that develops an elevated experience for its shoppers. The user is primarily small families teaching their kids about farming with one or two chickens in their backyard. It aims to attract potential “city farmers� interested in picking up a small hobby and so it needs an edge.

I have chosen to show a few of the selected sheets although there was 14 in total. The sheets shown give a feel for the scale and the design intent with moving shelves and wood accents being a large component. Fur ther sheets show switching plans, elevations, ADA bathroom details, and more .

The translation of farming culture to a high-end urban farm store was achieved by abstracting crop lines and textures. In the sheet above there are details of the modular shelving units. The backing of the shelving units is made of raw reclaimed wood that creates a texture to mimic the crops undulating nature while the shelves are painted black and represent the soil lines between. The idea was to reverse the section of crops while providing flexible shelving for changing products and demand.

05 AN URBAN I N C U B ATO R

Fall 2017 Type New Construction Size 97,000 sq ft Software Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator Duration 5 weeks The goal of the urban incubator was to create engaging spaces that both brought connection to daylight and nature by way of interior and exterior courtyards while also facilitating meeting spaces that encourage collaboration. This all happens in around the courtyards spaces by using different methods of meeting: pin up spaces, formal meeting, informal conference, and tinker making spaces. The ground floor is an open plaza that allows the public to weave in and out on there way between Broadway and Couch. In between the retail spaces on the ground floor the open breeze ways allow for landscaping and water collecting via the courtyards and slanted roofs above. The incubator allows the public to fully occupy the ground floor and the start up companies above to move throughout the rhythm of the open office and meeting.

THE SITE located along the North Park Blocks and at the cross street of Couch and Broadway, the site has many interesting opportunities. The main aim for my project was to connect Broadway to the park blocks through a very open ground floor.

The retail is broken up, allowing pedestrians to meander from Broadway to the Park Blocks while shopping at pop up stores with goods from the makers above.

06 N OTA B L E PAPER COMPANY

Summer 2015 - Present Software Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop Tools Photography While I have been in architecture school I decided to put my graphic skills to use in a professional sense. I had a wedding to attend and decided that my present would be the paper goods for the couple. After I went through the process I realized that it could work as a business model and so I opened my Etsy shop. I determined to use it as a chance to both profit myself with a small income but also instead of printing and mailing a product, all of the invites are digitally purchased. Meaning that anyone who purchases either a wedding suite, poster, or invite from my shop is buying a PDF that they then print at home/locally. The idea is to shorten store to customer time as far as shipping but also cut out the process of shipping that affects the carbon output towards greenhouse gases. The hope is that the customer gets a high quality product on a budget, while also forgoing unneeded carbon emissions.
