Our studio-first program, registered by the Design Institute of Australia (DIA), cultivates high levels of design expertise. With a Bachelor of Design, you’ll gain the knowledge to redirect, challenge and rethink traditional processes and procedures in the design industry.

With the option to apply via portfolio submission, you can showcase your creative potential upfront. Accessible to all, this degree welcomes individuals with curiosity and passion for making a difference

Visual Communication Design

Explore many different forms of visual and graphic communication and branding and understand the social contexts and environmental responsibilities of design. You’ll learn how to effectively present and communicate your ideas within this evolving industry and develop design solutions which inform, persuade, provoke, or entertain your audience.

Product and User Experience Design

Passionate about using cutting-edge digital technology to design unique products and experiences? This major equips you with handson skills in additive manufacturing (3D printing), virtual modeling, simulation, laser cutting, and CNC fabrication. You’ll cultivate future-ready skills to transform how people interact with and experience the world.

Interior Design

Prepare to explore diverse spaces and societies, crafting imaginative interiors and public urban spaces across various scales and domains. With a strong focus on social and environmental justice, sustainability, liveability, diversity, and inclusion, this major integrates theory with hands-on practice.

Bachelor of Visual Arts

Study visual arts at the Queensland College of Art and Design (QCAD), Australia's leading art and design college. At Griffith, you'll develop and showcase your creativity and passion across diverse fields.

In your first year, you’ll gain a grounding in the fundamental aspects of visual art practice and theory, and develop your individual skills, abilities and interests. In your second and third years, you’ll focus your studies towards your major studio area, while developing a wide range of skills, concepts and experiences. Bachelor of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art

A degree in Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art invests Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders with the skills and techniques to become professional artists.

In this unique degree, you'll learn from Indigenous lecturers and focus on traditional Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art media, styles and forms.

Through your studies in Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art, you'll explore the diversity of modern Indigenous art practice, and gain deep insights into contemporary culture and political art.

Queensland College of Art and Design (QCAD) uses a range of selection criteria for admission into its programs.

Admission for design and visual arts degrees is via portfolio submission or ATAR/Rank Guarantee.

A portfolio is a collection of work that showcases your skills, commitment and creative potential. " "

While we believe that your academic performance is important, we know it’s not the only sign of your development, so it may not show us your creative ambitions and potential.

Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art (CAIA) admission is via portfolio only.

Applying via Portfolio or ATAR / Rank

Domestic students can apply for the following degrees using either a portfolio application or a standard ATAR /Rank application:

• Bachelor of Visual Arts

• Bachelor of Design

• Bachelor of Visual Arts/Bachelor of Business*

• Bachelor of Design/Bachelor of Business*

Applicants who wish to be considered via the portfolio pathway must submit by the related close date and therefore have the opportunity to secure their place in an early round. Applicants who are not successful with their portfolio/interview will automatically be considered based on ATAR/Rank.

Please note, international students are required to apply via the international application process.

With more than 50% of our student population comprising of mature students (also often called Adult Learners or Mature-age students).

These are students who have taken a gap between school and university and may have take alternative pathways to university based on other education or experience. We are experts at helping mature students settle into university life and study.

Mature-Aged Students

Regardless of your educational background, there are admissions pathways to help you achieve your university dreams. We hold outreach activities with partnering TAFEs, community colleges, VET providers and community service organisations to raise higher-education aspirations of mature students. We also help mature students navigate admission pathways to university and transition smoothly into tertiary study.

Art and Design Schools Program

QCAD’s Art and Design Schools Program celebrates outstanding creative talent across Queensland through workshops and exhibitions for high school students. The program connects art, design and technology-focused students with our expert staff, creating a twoway dialogue that inspires students and exposes their early work to leading creative practitioners from QCAD. Art and Design Schools Program workshops focus on the practical and hands-on, supported by the theoretical concepts that underpin the creative arts.

Head Start program

Our Head Start program provides the opportunity for motivated students to study a course (subject) at Griffith while completing your high school studies. With the tuition fee covered by the University, the program lets you sample university life at Griffith, learn from industry leaders and stretch your academic boundaries.

Portfolio workshops

Portfolio workshops will show you how to build a creative portfolio in readiness for submitting a portfolio admission. You'll learn how to create a portfolio that best represents your unique creativity and skills; complete at least one piece of work for your creative portfolio; meet with our staff and explore our QCAD studios and facilities.

Campus tours and school visits

We can arrange for our staff, lecturers or current students to come to your school and talk to students, highlighting our different areas of study. We can also arrange a broad presentation on careers and pathways into Griffith. Alternatively, campus tours and experience days are a fantastic opportunity for a first-hand experience of the Queensland College of Art and Design.

You can arrange a visit at any one of our campuses, take a tour of our new and exciting teaching and research facilities, and meet with our expert lecturers.

QCAD Live

QCAD Live houses a number of professional Visual Art, Photography and Design studios within the Queensland College of Art and Design ( QCAD), Griffith University. We offer a dynamic range of creative and commercial services at a commercial rate.

Whether you need an illustration, design, mural, sculpture or print, our emerging artists, photographers, and designers will bring your vision to life under the guidance of our expert staff.

Students work on projects for real clients in one of our commercial studios, run by practitioners with years of industry experience.

Griffith University Art Museum Internship Program

Successful applicants for this internship gain a broad introduction to working life at a museum. Interns work closely with museum staff members to undertake daily operations across our Gallery and Collection locations and learn about installing exhibitions, preventative conservation, condition reporting and other hands-on museum skills.

Exhibitions and artist talks

Students have access to an exciting calendar of oncampus seminars, guest lectures, masterclasses and exhibitions. Learn from industry leaders in the design and visual arts industries.

Partner Institutions and collaborations

We have a strong commitment to community partnerships and internationalisation. Take advantage of a wide range of learning and cultural exchanges through our close ties with an increasing array of international partner institutions, including Beijing Normal University, California State University, University of Edinburgh, Shandong University of Art and Design, James Fraser University, and Korea’s KAIST Centre for Creative Entrepreneurs.

Go global

Through the Griffith Global Mobility program, we offer a variety of international learning experiences to enhance graduate outcomes. Eligible students can participate in programs in over 50 countries, including: trimester, summer or winter exchange; global internships; international volunteering; overseas short courses, conferences and workshops; field trips and research practicums.

Scholarships

There are over 600+ scholarships available at Griffith University for academic performance, accommodation, sport, First Peoples and equity to cover university fees, living and education expenses. Scholarships are free to apply. There are a number of scholarships specific to Visual and Creative Arts students, including the $10,000 Art in Bark Bursary for commencing Visual Arts students from regional areas.

QCAD Studios

The Queensland College of Art and Design (QCAD) studios provide an outstanding practical and communitybuilding environment. QCAD studios include technical workshops, fullyequipped print, jewellery and photography studios as well as substantial studios for drawing, painting, sculpture, contemporary Australian Indigenous art and design. These studios–located across our South Bank and Gold Coast campuses–also provide an important shared space for exchange and critique between peers, staff and visiting artists.

Contemporary Australian Indiegnous Art (CAIA) studios

Combine your passion for Country and culture in dedicated CAIA studios, purpose built for students of the Bachelor of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art.

The space is a perfect environment for you to connect, share ideas and create work based on research into your own family history and traditions.

Design studios

The design studios on both the South Bank and Gold Coast campuses are designed as collaborative working environments.

In these studios, you'll develop projects through workshops and collaboration with fellow students and both private and industry partners.

We offer state-of-the-art equipment, key tools and the latest technologies, allowing you to take your concepts from design to prototype under one roof.

Drawing studio

This purpose-built studio is adaptable to suit the diverse practise of drawing.

Perfect for experimentation and testing of ideas, the large studio space is ideal for sharing work and interacting with peers and teaching staff.

Jewellery and Small

Objects studio

This studio on our South Bank campus is used by undergraduate and postgraduate students to create artworks for the body, or small-scale objects. The studio is a hub of activity with a community-building ethos.

The J&SO student collective runs extracurricular activities and events that help students to build their networks and experience, and significantly contribute to the strong community culture at QCAD.

Studio courses focus on concept-driven projects to build bench skills, materials knowledge and technical proficiency.

Liveworm studios

Liveworm bridges the gap between design theory and creative professional practice, providing a unique opportunity for you to test and develop your abilities on real projects, for real people, in a real studio environment. You'll collaborate with industry partners across two dedicated studio spaces on the South Bank and Gold Coast campuses, alongside remote students via Virtual Design Studio technologies and workflows.

Established in 1982, Liveworm is one of the longest-running design studios in Australia and a flagship experience for multiple generations of Queensland College of Art and Design Griffith University graduates. The program has launched thousands of creative careers with Liveworm project outcomes featuring in graduate design portfolios across the globe.

QCAD Galleries

Exhibitions, guest lectures and artist talks are programmed in the Project Gallery, Webb Gallery and Grey Street Gallery throughout the year. Exhibition opportunities are available to students, staff and external exhibitors. Exhibitions are free and open to the public.

We aim to foster experimentation and innovation while providing a forum for research, ideas and exchange. Exhibition programming varies across our gallery spaces, with a primary focus on contemporary art and design, research, curatorial projects and connections between artists from South East Queensland and beyond.

Printmaking studio

We are nationally recognised for the quality and safety of our printmaking studios. The printmaking techniques supported in them include; papermaking, relief/woodblock printing, letterpress, intaglio/ etching, lithography, silk screening, artists books and a range of digital techniques including laser engraving.

As a student working in these studios, you're encouraged to seamlessly integrate technical proficiency into the conceptual content of your work.

ADaPT 1.0

ADaPT brings together multi-disciplinary expertise across Griffith University in collaboration with leading industry partners to push the boundaries in advanced custom design, rapid prototyping and new materials.

With advanced design at its centre and collaboration at its core, ADaPT combines leading-edge expertise in micro and nanoscience, complex imaging, 3D digital scanning, 3D functional modelling, bioengineering, industrial design, big data analytics, artificial intelligence and specialist expertise in designing advanced manufacturing processes. ADaPT is equipped with extensive 3D printing technologies including multiple metal, polymer and bio printing capabilities.

Painting studio

These studios at our South Bank campus are located on level 6 of the Grey Street Studios overlooking the Brisbane River and CBD. These impressive lightfilled spaces are available to students studying second and third-year painting courses. You'll use these studios to develop artwork related to your painting courses and importantly, as a space for shared exchange and critique with both staff and peers. The space includes:

• Individual studio spaces for third year students

• Shared studio space for second year students

• All studio spaces are equipped with easel, locker, desk and chair

• Access to painting consumables such as primer and solvent

• Canvas stretching workshop.

Sculpture studio

Located on the ground level of our South Bank campus, facing out to the South Bank Parklands, the layout of the sculpture studio is open and flexible. You'll create your own individual studio space with moveable panels and will develop and install work for your final graduate exhibition in these spaces. There are two temporary installation rooms where you're encouraged to experiment with video projections and multimedia project ideas.

This unique warehouse-like space has vast ceilings, perfect for you to develop ambitious suspended works that can hang from the steel beams. As the studio is located at ground level, you can drop off heavy materials like metal and timber directly to the loading dock. Industrial electric roller doors allow for large-scale works to be constructed and there is a large bank of tables outside of the studio with shade protection, where you can work on plaster, sanding and stretching frames.

Photography studio

Our South Bank Photography studios consist of two specialty spaces, including three fully-equipped photographic studios and two darkrooms. They are fitted out with the world’s leading brands in photographic studio lighting, computers and software and have been designed to facilitate large group projects as well as individual practice. The studios are used as a core teaching space for students where academics, alumni and industry are regular contributors to student learning and engagement.

The darkrooms are fundamental to the student experience of photography at QCAD and consist of black and white printing, as well as black and white and colour film processing facilities, and several wet areas for experimental processes. These are practice-led learning environments that encourage experimentation while harnessing techniques and skills.

Graduates require a broad range of attributes and skills to make a positive difference in their local and global communities. Graduate Attributes represent the broad qualities that are necessary for students to contribute meaningfully to their communities. These attributes are underpinned by a range of transferable skills that employers look for when recruiting, and can be developed through assessment and learning experiences.
