F. Christophers & Son Ltd F. Christophers & Son was started by Henry Christophers in 1835 as village undertakers in Bickington, which was part of Ashburton at that time.

The business was named H H Christophers & Son until the death of Mr Fred Christophers’ great grandfather in 1946. The ‘F’ refers to Fred Christophers’ grandfather, Frederic, a WW1 Grenadier, church organist and special constable. Fred’s father ‘Bertie’ continued the business from the late 1940s until retirement in

1972, the year Jonathan Christophers was born, the next generation of funeral director.

Fred has been the ‘in between’ since 1972 to the present day, spanning three generations of funeral directors, and overseeing the expansion of the business into Newton Abbot. Funerals have been conducted from small village churches to Exeter Cathedral.

The company has offered Golden Charter funeral plans since 1982, and offers advice and help on all aspects of funerals.

The charge for hiring the kitchen is £15 per session which run from 8 am to 1pm, 1pm to 6 pm and 6pm to midnight.

History of the Town Stannary Town ASHBURTON’S past prosperity is based on the mining of Dartmoor tin and the woollen industry, with the river providing ample power for the many mills that once lined its banks.

Ashburton is one of only four stannary towns in Devon, the others being Chagford, Tavistock and Plympton, with tin being mined in the area as far back as Roman times.

The word stannary derives from the Latin stannum meaning tin. The towns were important centres for

the trade of the metal as all rough smelted tin had to be stamped before it was taken away for use.

The tin was Crown property and assayed for value so the miners could be paid for what they produced.

Ashburton was designated a stannary town as early as 1285 AD. It became the county’s most important one in 1515 when nearly 40 per cent of Devon's tin was sold there. By the early 1700s the trade had all but died out but small amounts of ore have been mined even up to comparatively recent times.

Portreeve ANOTHER important part of Ashburton’s history is the office of portreeve, not least because this ancient Saxon office is still kept alive. The name is derived from the Saxon words for market town ‘port’ and ‘gerefa’ meaning official. Dating back to 820 AD, the office is the only one now held by Act of Parliament although the role exists in eight other towns across England.

The chief duty of a Saxon portreeve was to represent the King in legal transactions and he was often the only person who could read and write, particularly when all the documents were in Latin.

The Court Leet is composed of freeholders of the town and is appointed each year at St Lawrence Chapel on the fourth Tuesday in November. The portreeve is elected together with the bailiff, ale tasters and bread weighers.

The Court Baron, made up of tenants of the town, elects the viewers of the market, viewers of water courses, tree inspector, searcher and sealer of leather, scavengers and pig drovers.

Today the portreeve’s position is mainly as a social head for the town, attending the many charitable fundraising events and, in conjunction with the mayor, leading and representing the town.

Town Hall BUILT in 1850 by Lord Clinton this Italianate building replaced the old wooden market hall which existed in the middle of North Street until being demolished in 1848.

Originally the ground floor was open and arcaded to house fish and butter markets, with a pannier market to the rear. The southern end, together with the pannier market, was removed to widen King’s Bridge in the 1970s. The ground floor now houses the town council office.

The Arms of Lord Clinton are carved above the North Street entrance which is fronted by impressive granite paving. The library and the tourist information centre are at the rear.

Chapel The Chapel of St Lawrence is one of Ashburton's oldest and most interesting buildings. It was originally a private chapel for the Bishop of Exeter.

Ashburton was held by Bishop Stapledon who was Lord of the Manor and stayed in his palace in the town.

In 1314 he gave the building to the town to be administered by the original Guild of St Lawrence, led by the portreeve of the day, on the stipulation that a Chantry School was maintained there. This evolved into a grammar school which celebrated 600 years of history in 1914. The school closed in 1938 due to a fall in numbers but the building continued in use as an annexe to the county and primary schools until 1994.

The building also housed the town's library for more than 40 years and the town's museum. At present the local community, through a reformed Guild of St Lawrence in partnership with Dartmoor National Park Authority, is ensuring this unique building's continued use as a heritage centre throughout the summer season.

The Courts Leet and Baron and the portreeve have used it for many centuries, and many other town groups also use the facilities both as a meeting place and for musical concerts and fundraising events.

The school produced many worthy scholars, including the following:

St Lawrence Chapel.

John Dunning (1713-1783) became the greatest lawyer Devon has produced and rose to the peerage, becoming the first Lord Ashburton. A descendant was responsible for the founding of Ashburton, New Zealand. He was related by marriage to the Baring (Banking) family.

William Gifford (1776-1826) became the first editor of The Quarterly Review and is buried in Westminster Abbey.

John Ireland (1761-1842) became Dean of Westminster and officiated at the Coronations of William IV, George IV and Queen Victoria.

Richard Carlisle (1790-1843) became one of the greatest fighters for the freedom of the press, freedom of speech and free discussion.

William John Wills (died 1861), with Burke, was the first to cross the continent of Australia from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria but on the return journey they ran out of food and water and died only 30 miles from Adelaide. Wills carved his name on one of the benches in the Chapel.

John Satterley (born November 1879) Grammar School 1892-1898; Royal College of Science, London 1898-1903; Cambridge 1903-1912; emigrated to Canada and became a professor at the University of Toronto from 1912-1956. Made a life member of Devonshire Association in 1919 and wrote many articles for them and other scientific journals.

The Parish Church of St Andrew THE church is a distinguished building with an impressive exterior and a magnificent tower standing at 92ft.

Near the base is the grave of a French officer prisoner-of-war who died just one month after the Battle of Waterloo, a reminder that many Gallic prisoners were billeted here on parole during the Napoleonic Wars.

The church was erected at the end of the 12th century and entirely rebuilt 300 years later. The excellent proportions outside are reflected in the interior. Noteworthy is the long wagon roof, the arches and piers of the nave (one pier is a monolith), the memorial to Lord Dunning, the first

Church of St Andrew.

Well-to-do members of the tinners and wool merchant guilds, both of which had Guild Chapels in the transepts, made the rebuilding of the church possible. Open daily 10am-3.30pm (winter), 10am-4pm (summer).

Museum NO visit to Ashburton would be complete without a trip to the town's museum.

Originally started in a private house, it moved to the tower of St Lawrence Chapel and, when it outgrew that, in 1962 to the old blacksmith's shop behind the chapel (part of the old grammar school site).

In 1968 it moved again to its present site in the centre of Ashburton (next door to Lloyds Bank) in a building that was once a brush factory. It houses a unique collection which, in addition to items of local interest, includes a large collection of North American artefacts. The museum is open from May to September (times vary), and is supported entirely by voluntary effort.

Ashburton Carnival ASHBURTON’S carnival is possibly one of the oldest surviving in Devon. It dates back more than a hundred years with written records of it taking place in 1891.

It is thought to have been formed to raise funds for building a new hospital in the mid 1880s.

Events today are no less colourful than in the past with eight days of activities starting on the last Saturday in June with the grand fete. A week-long programme culminates in the grand procession of floats through the town on the first Saturday in July.

Bread Weighing and Ale Tasting Ceremony ASHBURTON’S tradition of ale tasting and bread weighing is held on the third Saturday in July each year.

Until the time of the Magna Carta there was no check on the price or quality of these staple products.

Ashburton's records of its ale tasters fining brewers for selling bad drink date back to the 13th century, soon after the first ale conners were appointed in London in 1276.

Today’s ceremony in St Lawrence Lane keeps alive this ancient tradition with a colourful procession through the town at 3pm by members of the Courts Leet and Baron Juries, Town Council and other local people in medieval dress, culminating in a medieval fair.

Buildings of note and a walk around the town THE town has a wealth of old buildings, small courtyards and walled pathways, all of which give hours of pleasure just by walking around. Near the car park, behind the town hall, one of the surviving wooden-shuttered lofts for drying wool can be seen.

As you leave the car park and cross the little bridge beside the town hall, you can spot the start of the small leat which fed the town mill.

As you enter North Street the abundance of historical architecture becomes evident. Of particular note is the small shop opposite, its slate-hung frontage carved with the different suits of a pack of cards. It was formerly a gaming house. Further down North Street is the hardware store housed in the former Mermaid Inn, with its medieval granite arched doorway, where the Civil War Roundhead leader, General Fairfax, stayed in 1646 following the battle of Drumbridges.

Turn back up North Street to view the building that housed the former United Reform Church, now Adrian Agar – an antique fireplace emporium.

Ashburton’s earliest Nonconformist church, which closed in the 1980s, still retains many of its features including stained glass windows and memorials on the walls. Its Parliament Clock was bought for the town and is housed in the museum.

Just beyond Adrian Agar turn right into Stapledon Lane, named after the former Bishop of Exeter who gave the town St Lawrence Chapel in the 14th century. You can walk back down into East Street.

Previously called Back Lane and Cad Lane, its ancient buildings are older than they look and the paved kerb stones at the far end are worthy of note with grooves worn by cart wheels.

As you join East Street turn left and walk up the hill. The pink limestone kerb stones came from the local quarry and are known as Ashburton marble, viewed at their best when wet. The slightly curved street was once the main road between Exeter and Plymouth. The grand classical front of the Nat West Bank is almost immediately on your left. A little further up you come to number 31 with its vertical fish-tailed slate facade. Further still on the right is the former Golden Lion, built in 1790 for Nicholas Tripe, a surgeon. It was once the home of publican Alan Hope and the Monster Raving Loony Party until 2000.

Buildings of note and a walk around the town Continued from page 17 handsome stone conduit erected to supply water to the town by Jardine, Ashburton’s last MP. Many small alcoves are visible around the town which were also part of the same early (1790s) system.

Either retrace your steps or follow Roborough Lane uphill for half a mile until you reach Terrace Walk on the left (look out for the signpost). Follow this path for wonderful views over the upper part of Ashburton and the Ashburn Valley, eventually emerging at the top of North Street.

If you choose to walk from the Golden Lion towards the town centre take the first left, Woodland Road, to the bottom of the slope. The primary school is on your left and the old cattle market on your right (now closed and flats built there). Follow the wall of the market, built in 1920 to where the displaced, ancient North Street market was relocated. As you emerge into St Lawrence Lane the former railway station is before you. Originally the terminus for the branch line from Totnes, built in 1872, its design is attributed to Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who developed the line in 1843. The Station Garage, in the old station, is next to the Silent Whistle, so named in 1973 when the line closed. Its exterior is worth a second look for the carved stonework and figures.

Turn right to return along St Lawrence Lane or take the small pathway beside the public house – one of Ashburton’s many walled paths. If you follow this path, as you cross the River Ashburn, look at the the stone slabbed river bed which was provided to wash the wool from the town mill, formerly behind the wall where St Methodist Church.

Golden Lion pub. now stands. The original mill building now serves as the community room for this small development of sheltered housing. It can be visited by way of the road beside the Methodist Church in West Street.

The stone lamp in the grounds is the top section of the former edifice from the centre of the town (The Bull Ring). On the left, over the bridge, is the town's recreation ground, bought by the townspeople and opened in 1914. To the right the path joins with Church path, which runs beside the churchyard and St Andrew’s, coming out through the medieval granite archway into West Street.

Turn left and walk up past the church. At the house which stands to the left of Bowden Hill note the horseman on the roof. This is a replica of the original figure stolen a couple of years ago. The feature denoted a safe house for a Cavalier sympathiser during the Civil War. Turn back for a fine view of the street scene with the handsome houses on the left built for wool merchants. You can also make out the Saxon field system on the hillside behind.

As you walk back into town you pass the fine buildings of 32 West Street and Mapleton House, both of which have slate-hung upper floors. The building of the medieval Exeter Inn on the left followed by Bank House with its handsome cornices, are also worthy of a second look before you pass through another archway back into the car park. If you look back, over the roof of the Exeter Inn, note the mural on the abutting wall.

Walks around Ashburton Walk 1 – The Terrace and Circular Walk (1.3 miles) CROSSING King’s Bridge, turn left into North Street and walk 300 yards with Cleder Place and the River Ashburn on your left. When an opening appears in the high stone wall on your right, opposite Crockerton Cottages, cross over the road, mount the steps, through the kissing gate and enter a very steep field known as The Terrace.

A well-trodden path gently climbs the rounded flank of the field. Take advantage of the seats to view the splendidly wooded valley stretching up to the Dartmoor foothills. The final 200 yards of Terrace Walk are along a lane exiting into Roborough Lane. Turn right and walk downhill into East Street.

Walk 2 – To Waterleat START as in Walk 1 but take the lower path on Terrace Walk, alongside the River Ashburn.

Negotiate the granite stile in the hedge ahead and then set a course for the granite stile which Cleder Place. appears in the distant hedge beside Cuddyford Bridge. Cross over the road to a kissing gate leading into a finger-posted path through a field. A well worn track leads into Woodencliffe Woods and Whiddon Scrubs and Woods.

After three gates, the very energetic can lengthen their walk by following a wooden signpost marked ‘Path’. This takes the walker up the steeply wooded slope. On reaching the top, turn left along a field hedge for 200 yards before turning downhill to eventually negotiate giant man-made steps and so back downhill to the original path again.

Look out for half-a-dozen giant sequoia trees beside the Ashburn. When in sight of the wooden (sleeper) bridge over the river, the walker has a choice of three alternatives to return to Ashburton:

Choice 1 – Coffin House Route (1.5 miles) TURN left over the wooden bridge, passing Waterleat Bridge and Ashburton Park. Along this road is an unusually tall and narrow building – Belford Mill (coffin shaped and locally called The Coffin House), with a typical weatherboarded top associated with carding and combing in the old woollen industry. (Another can be seen just before the Victoria Inn in North Street.)

Choice 2 – Pennsland route (2.7 miles) CROSS the bridge, turn right, climbing the road until the outermost buildings of Rushlade Farm are met. To the left another signpost indicates Pennsland Lane. Descend to Pennsland Bridge – a very pretty wooded and riverside area, especially in spring. On the lower side of the bridge is the take-off point for the original reservoir serving Ashburton – last used in the 1976 drought! The lane exits onto the road leading to Lower and Higher Bowdley Farms. Turn left and downhill back to the road leading to Ashburton as in Choice I above.

Choice 3 – Owlacombe route (2.8 miles) AT the end of the walk through the woods another finger post points to a righthand path marked ‘Owlacombe’. The path climbs up through Lower and Higher Whiddon Farms, giving some interesting views through gateways, eventually meeting the road to Owlacombe Cross. Turn right onto this road and right again to return to Ashburton via Tower Hill. At the bottom of Tower Hill go straight across Longstone Crossroads into Roborough Gardens, down Roborough Lane, turning right into East Street and back to the car park.

Walk 2 and its alternatives can be shortened by driving to Cuddyford where there is very limited roadside parking.

Walk 3 – Bulliver’s Way WALK up West Street to where the Old Totnes Road forms a downward left fork. Follow it and just before the little bridge is an ancient granite cross and a tiny spring – St Gudula’s Well or Gullwell, claimed as a cure for sore eyes. Return by way of Snakey Lane and onto Western Road or retrace your steps and turn right (Stonepark) and right again and through the auction rooms parking area on to Bulliver’s Way – the course of the old railway track.

(1 mile) Here you can turn right and walk to the end St Gudula’s Well (Gulwell). (its junction with the A38 Devon Expressway slip road) (1.8 miles) or left to bring you back to the cattle market, St Lawrence Lane and East Street (1.2 miles). (Bulliver was the name of the engine when trains ran along the line.)

Ashburton Walk 4 – River Dart CROSS over King’s Bridge, turn left into North Street and a 300-yard walk will lead you over Great Bridge into Headborough Road. 400 yards up from the bridge on the left is a very pleasant walk to the River Dart by way of public bridleways and a short stretch of road. The first section Goosepool Lane is extremely muddy, even in summer. When you emerge at Summerhill Cross, go straight over and after approximately 100 yards turn right by Summerhill Farm at a public footpath. At the end, return the way you came. The return distance is approximately 3.6 miles.

Alternatively, when regaining the stretch of road alongside the Lavender House return by way of Lavender House and Bowden Hill (a little further down the road and on the left) and eventually down into West Street after enjoying some attractive views towards the South Hams from the top of Bowden Hill, and then into North Street – (3.8 miles).

Another choice available on regaining the Summerhill Road from the River Dart is, instead of returning to cross the Ashburton-to-Princetown Road near the Lavender House, to continue along the old County Road in a south westerly direction to the Buckfastleigh Road. Here turning left will bring you into Ashburton by way of Dartmoor Lodge Hotel, Western Road, West Street and finally into North Street – a distance of about 4 miles.

Walk 5 – Dartmoor and Buckland Beacon (1mile) DARTMOOR is a compelling magnet for visitors and residents alike. For the first excursion to the moor visit Buckland Beacon, Ashburton’s nearest tor (ie weathered outcrop of rock, usually granite). From this vantage point a magnificent panorama of deep and wooded valleys opens up towards the west, with the River Dart winding away towards Dartmeet and the wild moorland hills beyond. Buckland Beacon is 1,281ft above sea level and cut into the granite rock can be seen the Ten Commandments, the work of a local stone-mason during the 1930s depression. It is only two miles north of Ashburton.

Drive out of Ashburton up North Street and follow the signs for Buckland and Widecombe, left over Great Bridge. At the top of the hill by the wooden bench, turn right for Widecombe and park near the cattle grid. Note the views to the coast and the Teign Estuary to the south. Turn and walk towards higher ground, keeping the wall on your left. After 200 metres turn left again following the wall. It is a fairly level walk to the Beacon and only about 15 minutes each way.

Ashburton Food and Drink Festival EACH year on the first or second Saturday in September the Ashburton Festival Association and Ashburton Cookery School organise and stage the town’s Food and Drink Festival.

Stallholders and exhibitors line St Lawrence Lane with the cookery theatre in the forecourt of St Lawrence Chapel.

The festival commences at 10am and closes at 5pm offering an excellent selection of high quality produce and brilliant cookery demonstrations from visiting celebrity chefs as well as talented locals. It’s a great way to celebrate the variety and quality of our area’s food and drink providers.

Its objective is to engage young people in purposeful activity in a space they can call their own, where they can relax, be creative, have fun, make friends, develop their interests and skills, talk and discuss, increase self-awareness, take on responsibility, seek advice and support, increase their understanding of the community around them and their involvement in it.

The youth club programme has varied activities including healthy eating, cooking, debates and discussions, computer skills training, team sports, games, quizzes, arts and crafts activities and outdoor activities.

The centre is open four nights a week – Tuesday to Friday.

In addition there is a confidential information, advice and support service for young people and the involvement of senior members in the running of BYP, some undertaking leadership training to assist with the weekly junior club.

As a registered charity, BYP relies for all of its funding upon donations and grants from individuals, organisations and from local, regional and national funding bodies.

The youth project’s current major funder is the Big Lottery Fund and is sponsored by Ashburton Cookery School.

It also receives funding from other sources including Ashburton Town Council Lottery, Heydown Trust, Ashburton Carnival Committee, Presence, Teignbridge Youth Network, St Andrew’s Church, Devon Safer Communities Trust, County and District Councillors Community Fund, Ashburton and Buckfastleigh Rotary Club, Ashburton WI, Buckfast Abbey Trust, 1192nd Portreeve’s Charity and PC Andy Dudley.

Things to do Eating and shopping ASHBURTON, the largest town wholly within Dartmoor National Park, is a haven for the hungry. The town has had a great reputation for its pubs, inns and coaching houses for hundreds of years. Its importance as a stannary town and its location on the main road to London meant that many a weary and traveller tarried awhile in search of sustenance.

Today is little different except that travellers who visit are doing so mostly for leisure. Some of the original pubs and inns still exist together with a good selection of cafes and quality restaurants.

Alternatively, for those self-catering or wanting to picnic on the moor, there are shops which provide not only necessities but also local produce offered by the traditional butchers, bakers, health food shop, delicatessen and fish deli.

Ashburton is a great base for your visit to Dartmoor with hotels, bed and breakfast accommodation, self-catering and nearby camping.

Antiques, collectables, art and crafts STEEPED in history, Ashburton has gained a reputation for

being a centre for antique dealers and is now well known for the number and high standard of its fine collectables outlets.

There is an auction room which has monthly sales of antiquities and art as well as shops selling secondhand and antiquarian books. Due to the wide variety of items available, the town’s antique shops have been attracting an everincreasing number of buyers from across the UK and abroad.
