Calling All Bookworms In Beaconsfield t is a long time since the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief (OXFAM) was founded in 1942 to help people in (occupied) Greece - remarkable enough in wartime. In those days and until relatively recently the High Streets were filled with new and second-hand bookshops. It was a joy for many to browse the shelves for a hidden gem. Nowadays most second-hand bookshops have gone and replaced with charity shops. Most charity shops stock “airport novels” but at an Oxfam bookshop it is still possible to pick up interesting books. The collapse of new and second-hand bookshops has a number of causes: the development of the internet (EBay) electronic devises, such as Kindle, price competitiveness on-line resulting in unfair competition for shops etc.
proved a success. If you long for the old-style second-hand book shop to browse in then look no further. The shop has been carefully laid out with sections for new and old books, fiction and non-fiction, biographies, classics and leisure activities, antiquarian and local interest books. There is even a large children’s display area with a loyalty card for children who get a tenth book free, with the purchase of nine! Christina and her staff are passionate about the shop,
On behalf of Oxfam, Christina Bennington opened a dedicated book and music store in New Beaconsfield in November 2016, which has Address: Oxfam Bookshop, 5 Station Road, Beaconsfield, HP9 2PB Situated opposite Waitrose and next to the existing Oxfam shop. Telephone: 01494 730005 Website: http://www.oxfam.org.uk/shop/local-shops/oxfam-booksmusic-beaconsfield To advertise please call 07786 735 711 or email info@beaconsfieldlocal.co.uk
books and music and even stock vinyl records, cds, dvds, music sheets and musical instruments to extend the range. Most usefully, they have a free book-request system. If there is a particular book you are after they will ring you if (and when) it comes in. Some requests have indeed been obscure! So why not see for yourself neither the usual charity shop nor the ‘standard’ bookshop. More an experience. The shop will also be happy to accept your donations.
Donations: If you would like to donate any new or good condition books, CDs, DVDS et cetera please come into the front or back of the shop during opening hours preferably. Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday 9.30am - 5.30pm PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL CHARITY BOOKSHOP! September / October 2017 29
