Rails, the sides of the kayaks, have great value in maintaining direction.

Without using a rudder an advanced kayaker turns by railing, lifting one side with the knees and hips. This makes for faster more efficient paddling and is a heck of a lot of fun.

Most sea kayaks are constructed from roto-moulded plastic or a fibreglass, kevlar and carbon mix, with a rudder or skeg to make direction control easy.

In a sea kayak you travel to amazing remote locations that few experience.

You pack in so much equipment that unpacking at a camp site, trampers look around for the porters or donkeys that carried it.

Sea kayakers live in camping luxury. Most sea kayakers take their own two or three man tent, an extra tent fly to give more shade or dry space, thick bed rolls, chairs, coffee percolators, enough food to live on for a week and a fine bottle or two to share in the evenings around a camp fire. Bulkheads form compartments, forward and aft of the cockpit, in which this equipment is stowed. Plus, after capsizing, these storage areas greatly reduce flooding and make rescue possible.

Sea kayaks come in many sizes, the longer the faster, the wider the more stable; while the hull’s shape determines the kayak’s reaction to sea conditions.

Design features include:The rocker (banana shape of the keel) which when pronounced offers faster turning and better handling in rough water and surf. When the rocker is less pronounced, a kayak will go faster but can become more difficult (unstable) in rough water.

These popular kayaks have revolutionised the sport, creating the opportunity for everyone to discover the fun and freedom of kayaking.

Constructed mainly of roto-moulded polyethylene plastic they are tough and robust and last for years.

Fishing kayaks come in all sizes and almost any kayak can be used for fishing. Most fishermen seek stability, speed, a good fishing platform and accessorising options. Fishing kayaks are now often fitted with everything from anchor systems to fish finders and are catching fish that make power boats owners turn rather green.

Sit-on-top Kayaks are often sold with the advice that anyone can do it, ‘just give it a go and you will have fun’. And while this advice is true at a very basic level, as you get more adventurous you may find yourself in conditions that you are not comfortable in. This is where a well trained kayaker will recognise the conditions changing before they get too much to handle and then have the skills to get them to safety.

Sit-on top kayaks come in many sizes for ‘recreation/touring’ and ‘fishing’.

A touring kayak is long and narrow and can therefore go fast and track in a straight line. It’s perfect for longer distances.

A recreational kayak is generally shorter. It tends to be more manoeuvrable but slower, turns well and is great for exploring rock gardens and mangroves. Plus is often fun in the surf.

Sit-in kayaks or ‘closed cockpit’ kayaks as they’re otherwise known, have developed over the years to become more appealing to the general market and are commonly constructed of roto-moulded polyethylene making them pretty tough.

Recreational kayaks are generally shorter than sea kayaks, often with wider, stable hulls and larger cockpits making them easier to get in and out of. They offer you a drier ride with more protection from the elements than a Sit-on-top and can have very comfortable seats with good back support. Some have bulkheads and hatches in the rear for dry storage so you can take a picnic or even overnight camping gear.

Generally the longer the kayak the faster it will go and more it will track in a straight line, however as they are shorter than the average sea kayak they are slower but tend to be more manoeuvrable.

Multisport or adventure racing are one of the most popular types of kayaking in New Zealand, with events nationwide every year. If getting fit or taking on a challenge is what appeals to you, then these multisport kayaks are designed to fulfil the need. How will it make me safer?

Most people look at a PFD as a way to keep yourself afloat until you can fix the problem you are in or until help arrives, this is correct.

Why Pockets?

With pockets you have equipment easily stored on you, so if you do get separated from your kayak you still have lots of options. Equipment is easily accessible for you to fix little issues along the way, without getting out of your kayak.

Choosing a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) or Buoyancy Aid. First it must fit well. That means that the bottom of the PFD should not go below your belly button and when fitted snugly it should stay firmly and comfortably on you.

A couple of simple tests we use are: Once you have fitted the PFD, pop your thumbs under the shoulder straps and try to lift the PFD over your head. If it goes over your head or it stops on your chin, it will not work when you are swimming and you should readjust it and try again. If it still comes up over your head, it is the wrong size or design for your body and you should try another model.

Also when trying on a PFD (once it is fitted correctly as above) sit down on the floor with your legs out in front of you (just like when you are kayaking) and see if the PFD is pushed up off your lap and starts to become uncomfortable.

More information; Buying a PFD comes down to what you are going to use it for. If you are going fishing, sea kayaking, racing or just playing around at the beach. You will find that a PFD designed with kayaking in mind is generally shorter in the body with plenty of freedom of movement for your arms. They will make your paddling more comfortable, safer and and a lot more enjoyable.

Are PFD with pockets safer than just a basic no accessory option?

Yes, as you are much more likely to be able to get help if your VHF or Cell phone (in a dry bag) are attached to your PFD and hence you. We are much less likely to get into trouble if we can get an updated weather forecast from our VHF or Cell phone. We can refuel while paddling with both fluids and snacks and keeping well fed and hydrated in the outdoors giving you the ability to keep going longer when you need to. If for any reason you are separated from your kayak everything you need to survive a night in the bush or raise the alarm is in your PFD. Choosing a paddle The correct equation for the purchase of a paddle is complicated. It comes down to a number of variables that include the weight, construction materials, shaft length and paddle shape and size. A trained kayaking professional knows all about these and can make the correct call to suit your paddling adventures.

An example; A paddler who is 100kg of reasonable fitness will use a long shaft, big bladed paddle. His wife (whose weight will not be talked about) who is considerable smaller shall we say, would use a shorter shafted, smaller bladed paddle.

Now you say ‘they are going paddling together in the same kayaks, then she is going to be slower!’ Nope that is wrong, what will happen is she will have a faster cadence (more paddle strokes) than he. This will suit her lighter frame and both will be able to keep going longer together. This is because the sizing of the paddle to their body’s power, is more balanced.

Choosing a paddle is as important as the type of kayak you are buying. It is almost always overlooked when purchasing a kayak however and sold/ purchased with little or no thought by the purchaser or retailer. However when people find paddling a kayak hard work, it is almost always the fault of a poorly chosen paddle.

If you think about a car and using the gears when going up a steep hill or going along the open road you choose a gear that is suitable for the job at hand.

Paddling a kayak is similar in so far as if you are in a long racing kayak that flows through the water quickly, you need a longer shaft and bigger blade, and hence you have fifth gear in the car. Now if you use the same paddle in a recreational sit-on-top that is stable and fun, but considerably slower, every paddle stroke is going to be very heavy going and you will tire quickly.
