A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Welcome to Kawartha Lakes!
I’m thrilled that you’re considering making Kawartha Lakes your new home. We can’t wait to welcome you to our vibrant and growing community.
New residents often say their social calendars have never been so full. From live theatre and agricultural festivals to farmers markets and public skating, there’s always something happening here. Personally, I’ve made lifelong friends through local volunteer committees — whether it’s been through volunteer boards, neighbourhood events or sporting leagues — this is a place where you’ll feel at home right away.

Kawartha Lakes is expanding quickly. With new developments under way in Lindsay and across the municipality, we’re on track to reach 100,000 residents in the coming years. Our local government is working hard to ensure the services you need and want are in place. We’ve recently updated major planning documents like our Official Plan, Rural Zoning By-law, Active Transportation Plan and Growth Management Study. We’re ready for you!
When you want to be on the water right after work, this is the place to live. Kawartha Lakes is home to 250 waterways, all just a short drive, walk, or bike ride away. As a boater, paddler, or fisher, you’ll love it here. And if you aren’t one yet, you might become one.
Whether you plan to advance your career, raise a family, or simply enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle, you’ve found the right place. After 25 years living in Fenelon Falls, I can truly say this is a welcoming and close-knit community. Full of safe and vibrant places with many activities, this is a great spot for children to grow up in.
There’s no better time to Jump In — to community life, new opportunities, and everything Kawartha Lakes has to offer.
– Mayor Doug Elmslie, Kawartha Lakes

WELCOME TO KAWARTHA LAKES!
CHANGE YOUR LOCATION, CHANGE YOUR LIFE
By Roderick Benns, Publisher
We are lucky to have so many great communities that make up Kawartha Lakes – and if you’re new here, we’re lucky to have you join us!
Whether you're visiting, considering a move, or already settling in as a newcomer, you’ll enjoy this guide to everything Kawartha Lakes. (Even lifelong residents might discover something new.) You’ll find articles to read and lots of lists – these are our picks of the places you should do an internet search to find out more about.
There’s so much to take in here; Lindsay’s urban charm with riverside tranquility; the gorgeous waters of Fenelon Falls; the boating paradise that is Bobcaygeon; and so many more villages and hamlets that call out for exploration.
Beyond the scenery, Kawartha Lakes is also known for its affordability – at least compared to the Greater Toronto Area. Residents here embrace a strong sense of community, where local events, farmers’ markets, and festivals create opportunities to connect with neighbours.

Food lovers will appreciate the local produce and fresh ingredients. From cozy bakeries to bustling farmers’ markets, Kawartha Lakes offers a rich culinary experience rooted in its agricultural heritage. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy cycling through scenic routes, hiking along tranquil trails, or embracing winter with cross-country skiing.
Unlike Muskoka, Kawartha Lakes is refreshingly unpretentious. We offer a quieter, more affordable lifestyle without crowded roads or flashy billboards. Life here flows with ease — a community that prioritizes belonging over status.
If you are new to town and have questions about Kawartha Lakes, feel free to reach out to me at roderick@lindsayadvocate.ca.
At The Lindsay Advocate, our dedicated team is here to help you discover the best way to experience Kawartha Lakes. We also publish the weekly newspaper, Kawartha Lakes Weekly. You can find both products at lindsayadvocate.ca.
Whether you're arriving from the city, seeking balance, or already settled in, we encourage you to engage with your community. We’re here not just as observers, but as active participants — welcoming you to be part of this place we proudly call home.
COMMUNITIES OF KAWARTHA LAKES
Kawartha Lakes is a city made up of many vibrant communities with their own unique identities. The largest three are Lindsay, Bobcaygeon, and Fenelon Falls, where you can find lively, walkable downtowns packed with shops and restaurants. Though we don’t have room to list them all here, each of the smaller communities, like Omemee, Coboconk, Woodville, and Kinmount, offer a treasure trove of hidden gems waiting for you to explore!
Best known for our nature, Kawartha Lakes has more than 250 lakes and rivers and 600 kilometres of trails meandering throughout our communities and farmland.
FAST FACTS
• Located an hour and a half drive to Toronto (outside of peak travel times)
• Second largest municipality by geographic size in Ontario
• Municipal airport located in Lindsay
• Home to Kawartha Dairy headquarters in Bobcaygeon
• More than 80,000 permanent residents and 31,000/year seasonal residents

To sound a bit more like you live here, you’ll want to say Fenelon instead of Fenelon Falls, Caygeon instead of Bobcaygeon, Britain for Little Britain and Coby for Coboconk. But even we can’t figure out how to shorten Bethany, Pontypool, Woodville or Omemee.

FARM FRESH
We know where our roots are in Kawartha Lakes – firmly planted in farm fields. Our accomplished, innovative farm community is critical to our local economy, not to mention food security beyond our borders. Beef and dairy cattle are the most common types of operations, along with the associated forage crops. And of course, we have many farms that do a little bit of everything – eggs, crops, grazing animals, and more.

QUINTESSENTIALLY CANADIAN COMMUNITIES IN KAWARTHA LAKES

In Kawartha Lakes, our roots run deep in the land, the water, and our communities. We’re proud of our Canadian spirit, connection to nature, and warm, welcoming lifestyle. Living here means your playlist is different. Your commute can be a quiet paddle along one of our 250 waterways, serenaded by birdsong instead of traffic.
THE LAND
Generations of families have worked this land for over 200 years, creating an agricultural foundation known worldwide. Kawartha Dairy, home of everyone’s favourite ice cream, and Mariposa Dairy, renowned for award-winning cheeses, are just two examples of local businesses producing world-class products while hiring locally and giving back.
You won’t find a more peaceful commute. With trails, scenic rural roads, and bike routes connecting communities, your serene trip to work might take you through forests or alongside rivers.

THE WATER
With “Lakes” in our name, water is at the heart of everything we do. From dockside offices to weekend fishing trips, life on the water is just part of the lifestyle. FIND YOUR FOREVER HOME
As housing in the GTA became unaffordable, builders have turned to Kawartha Lakes to develop large numbers of new homes in an area where people love the quality of life.
Thinking of moving to Kawartha Lakes? We spoke with local real estate agents to give you an idea of the housing market and why Kawartha Lakes is a great place to look for your forever home.

Fun fact: Many individuals run small businesses for home maintenance, handywork, lawn care, and snow removal. You can often find them in the classifieds section of our newspaper Kawartha Lakes Weekly.
EVAN CONNOLLY, REALTOR
Considering a move? Kawartha Lakes offers rich history, more than 250 lakes and rivers, and unique rural charm. This region was shaped by railroads, logging routes, and the Trent-Severn Waterway. Today, it blends small-town warmth with cottage-country living. From Sturgeon to Balsam Lake, Fenelon Falls to Bobcaygeon, each community has its own story—and value. Understanding rural home systems like septic and wells is key, but the reward? Space, nature, and a lifestyle investment. Whether you're seeking a full-time home or a weekend escape, Kawartha Lakes is where opportunity and beauty meet. Want info about the market?
Follow me @teambradbird @evan.gconnolly for New Listings, Open Houses, quarterly Market Reports and Real Estate Update articles as seen in The Lindsay Advocate magazine.

HAROLD HULL, REALTOR
Should you move from the GTA to Lindsay/Kawartha Lakes? When is the right time? The average price of a home in Durham is $873,000 and in Lindsay it’s $649,000. If you’re downsizing the difference is even more dramatic. Lindsay has everything you need, it’s slated for major growth and is naturally and necessarily transitioned from the GTA by the Oakridge Moraine. From Scotiabank Centre you’re home to Lindsay quicker on newly extended and widened highways than actually crossing the city of Toronto. Whether carpooling, a first time buyer or a downsizing senior, it’s the right $$$ decision to move to this beautiful community. Do it smart though and use a Local Realtor for your purchase.
JASON RICHARD, REALTOR
After growing up in Durham Region and spending countless weekends at my cottage on the Burnt River, I made the move to Fenelon Falls full-time and never looked back. Whether you're searching for a family-friendly neighbourhood, peaceful acreage, or a waterfront retreat, Kawartha Lakes truly has something for everyone, and I’d love to help you discover it. With over a decade of experience in marketing and client service, I’m committed to making your move smooth and informed. I’ve helped clients relocate here from the GTA, Simcoe, and even the U.S., and I know how to make that transition seamless. My advice? Start early, ask questions, and work with someone who truly knows the area. Let’s connect! I’d be happy to help you feel at home in the Kawarthas.

STAY CONNECTED
When you get to a new community there’s nothing better than finding truly local media. Fireside Publishing House, the creators of the annual guide you are now holding, also produces The Lindsay Advocate magazine. This is a much-loved monthly news and features magazine. As well, Fireside produces a twice-annual lifestyle magazine called Kawartha Social. And just last year it filled a community void when it launched a weekly print newspaper, Kawartha Lakes Weekly

FROM BAY STREET TO KENT STREET: THE STORY BEHIND WARDS LAWYERS PC
What happens when two successful Toronto lawyers trade the fast pace of Bay Street for the heart of small-town Ontario? In the case of Jason and Karissa Ward, it sparked the beginning of what would become one of the Kawartha Lakes’ most trusted law firms.
More than twenty years ago, shortly after the birth of their first child, Jason and Karissa made a life-changing decision. Seeking a better balance between family and career, they left the city behind and returned to Jason’s hometown of Lindsay. There, they established Ward & Ward LLP, planting the roots of what would grow into today’s WARDS LAWYERS PC.
