Lindsay is not a walkable town

to the editor Appreciation for Advocate Just a quick note to tell you I picked up the July and August issues of the Advocate on the weekend during a trip into Lindsay. I was very impressed. Keep up the great work. I’ve been a freelance writer for four decades now – that’s why I was impressed with your magazine and what you’re doing for the community.

Of mice and men, city and country As I read Roderick Benns’ recent column in the August Advocate (The town mouse ponders the city’s growth), I marvelled at our differences. He grew up in small town Ontario; I in the big city, Toronto. He values cafes, local shops, theatre, paved roads and town amenities such as like a local library, public services for water and waste disposal, local schools and hospitals, and fewer bugs. I valued those things in the past as conveniences while meeting the hectic pace of city life – working, commuting and raising kids. Unlike Roderick, I have never enjoyed theatres, cafes or shopping. I don’t miss any of it, especially since my retirement.

Today, I live on two forested acres situated five km from the nearest town near a rail trail and a lake. If I want what a town has to offer, Lindsay is a pleasant 30-minute drive away. This compares favourably to life in Toronto, where getting to a destination was at least a 30-minute unpleasant drive.

I moved to Kawartha Lakes in 2016 to escape city and town living, and to enjoy the richness of nature and an active, healthy lifestyle, despite the bugs. Heck, I even like the mosquito-devouring bats and dragonflies now! If “city life” comes to Lindsay, I don’t care because it won’t affect what I cherish now. For those living in Lindsay, I expect they will adapt to the big box stores and traffic congestion. As Benns said, there will be trade-offs.

I moved to Lindsay last summer with my husband and two young children, hopeful to settle into a safe, family-friendly town. We’re big walkers and spend a lot of time walking residential streets around Lindsay, whether to pick up groceries or grab a coffee at Kindred downtown. But after a year of exploring this city, it’s become glaringly clear: for all its boasting about trails and outdoor charm, Lindsay is not a walkable city.

Sidewalks in many neighbourhoods are poorly maintained.

The lips between the road and sidewalk are often heaved and uneven, making it difficult — and sometimes dangerous — to push a stroller across. Add in a truck barreling down the street and you’re left wrestling with both crumbling infrastructure and reckless traffic.

Even the City of Kawartha Lakes’ own 2024–2029 Accessibility Master Plan acknowledges its responsibility under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) to provide accessible sidewalks, curb ramps, and pedestrian infrastructure. The plan references the “Design for Public Spaces” standard, which mandates properly sloped curb ramps and depressed curbs. And yet, despite this, the city offers no clear commitment to repair or retrofit the unsafe sidewalks. There’s no audit and no timeline — just vague policy language.

Worse still, one of the plan’s two strategic goals for the next four years is to “remove existing barriers.” But when you read further, this commitment only extends to “working towards building inclusive facilities, services, and programs.”

No mention of sidewalks. No mention of curb cuts. No mention of the streets residents navigate every single day.

Walkability means more than scenic trails or building new paths that follow AODA standards — it means maintaining and fixing the infrastructure we already have, so that our streets are safe and accessible year-round.

More bungalows would help small town feel In response to the article on how to keep the small town feel of Lindsay, I have a couple of suggestions.

Build more bungalows, put them on bigger lots and spaced further apart. If we continue to build communities like the ones on St. Joseph across from Wilson Fields and at Angeline and Orchard Park, Lindsay will look just like Newmarket, Stouffville and Markham.

Advice for community growth Re: Small towns, big dreams, Aug. Advocate cover story.

Once upon a time there was going to be a new home development in Fenelon Falls and a bypass where Sobeys is up Clifton Street. Nothing was done. Then a suggestion for a bypass using Witchwood to cross the river and meet Blyth Shore to Sturgeon Point and County Rd 30. Nothing was done, so the new homes went to Bobcaygeon where the forward-thinking council upgraded the sewer and water and built a bypass. Port 32 was great for the community.

So here we are, do we want to grow? I am fine with that if our elected members will look around and get ahead. Build a bypass on the 3rd concession and go all the way to 49 so the trucks can avoid Fenelon and Bobcaygeon. Expand the Ross Memorial Hospital and expand and build schools, ahead of growing the population. Add more ambulance stations and staff. Secure more parking and public transit.

Healthy neighbourhoods Re: Small towns, big dreams, Aug Advocate cover story.

As Lindsay grows, we need not mourn the loss of small town feel but instead celebrate the growth of our neighbourhoods. While Kindred and the Olympia are fantastic places in downtown Lindsay, that model, with a central downtown nucleus holding all the DNA of our town, is not actually the way the town works today, and it’s not a model for our future There are regulars at every restaurant in Lindsay and a sense of community around our chain coffee shops as well. There are daily gatherings of people at Tim Horton’s which are every bit as authentic as gatherings at Kindred. Let’s celebrate gatherings, no matter where they occur. Bringing people together is what builds our community.

In our present era of online shopping and home delivery, downtowns and malls are all struggling to compete with the convenience of Amazon and Temu.

The future of Lindsay’s neighbourhoods is in our control, and what we make of that opportunity will define our quality of life. We need businesses and restaurants distributed throughout the town; we need local neighborhood restaurants which are not measured by their address on Kent Street, but by how they serve their neighbourhood and community. The Queen’s Bistro is an example of that on the east side. St Dave’s Diner is a southern example, or the Airport

Restaurant on the west side.

Let’s grow our neighbourhoods. Let’s make sure every neighbourhood in Lindsay has a convenience store, a coffee shop, and a restaurant.

There isn’t just one-best-way, there are many paths to our future.

How to make Lindsay more liveable in face of growth Re: Small towns, big dreams, Aug Advocate cover story.

Congratulations on a well-written and interesting article. Keeping the small-town feel may be a matter of definition; however, the goal should be to further develop Lindsay as a livable and attractive place to live, work and play.

I don’t know the future plans for the downtown core. But imagine what it would look like with three to five storey buildings, courtyards, parkettes and playgrounds. The buildings would have commercial activities, restaurants, bars, cafes, stores, at street level, apartments of different sizes and office space. Maybe a downtown hotel.

Parking would be underground. The goal should be a living downtown from morning to midnight.

When it comes to the Lindsay Square, The Shops at Don Mills in Toronto may offer some inspiration. The old shopping mall there was demolished. Instead, several smaller buildings with stores and restaurants were created. In addition, apartment and condo buildings have been added. Again, an attempt to create a mixed-use development.

These are two examples (to) offer alternatives to the sprawl we are witnessing, which typically will result in two car households. A walkable community is a safer and livelier environment.

If Lindsay were in any European country, it would have hourly two-way train connection with (a city) the equivalent of Toronto. Now, we are in Canada, so how about an hourly bus connection? I understand there are discussions with GO/Metrolinx. In the meantime, maybe Durham Transit would be interested in a Lindsay-Port Perry- Oshawa connection?

Canada is burning on Carney’s watch

Canada is holding together, despite U.S.

Re: Root causes of MAGA, letter to the editor, August Advocate.

I voted Liberal last election believing you would be a better leader than Pierre Poilievre, believing that you understood the climate emergency and would take necessary action.

Instead, you talk about building more pipelines while Canada burns.

We are in a climate emergency now and your government is failing to act with the resources and urgency needed. I live in the Kawartha Region where five wildfires are burning as I write this, and our local firefighting services and the Ministry of Natural Resources lack the necessary resources. Instead, you commit our tax dollars to NATO and possibly a Golden Dome instead of funding our real, immediate emergency response needs. If you were providing the necessary resources the fires could be contained and extinguished before they get out of control and communities must be evacuated. Connect the dots: fossil fuels = climate change = wildfires. There is a straight line there. I and many of my neighbours have drawn the connections and we will be joining thousands across the country in “Draw the Line” rallies and events. In Lindsay the rally will be on Sept. 28 at Victoria Park at 1 p.m.

Gene Balfour writes a negative note while our country is happily celebrating Canadian patriotism and holding together while the U.S. government threatens our sovereignty and economic stability.

Fortunately his attitude is a rare one and hopefully won’t spread to others in a wet blanket of anti-federal nonsense.

Our entire region is shopping Canadian, travelling Canada, and thanking God that we live in this wonderful and magnificently beautiful country. Balfour needs to read more positive articles from one of the multitude of Canadians who still enjoy free health care, excellent education, and a prime minister who has worldwide respect and admiration.

Perhaps a trip south to visit cities that are demonstrating by the thousands against a corrupt regime that is led by a fascist despot would enlighten him.

This wonderful place Re: Bye bye bye Mansur’s Musings, August Advocate.

Picnic history column I really enjoyed Ian McKechnie’s Just in Time column in the August Advocate, “Feasting and Frolicking: Our picnicking past.” I wanted to comment on McKechnie’s opinion that, “While declining Sunday school attendance has largely rendered the church picnic a thing of the past.. the tradition remains very much alive.”

Yes! The tradition remains alive at St. James Anglican Church in Fenelon Falls. Our annual Sunday School picnic was held this year in June. The games were very enthusiastic, lemonade and cookies and freezies were supplied by the church volunteers and a great sing along, including “Sam the Sneaky Snake” and “This Little Light of Mine” was led by the Providence Road country band.

“Over the year and a bit that I’ve lived and worked in Lindsay, I found a place and sense of belonging that I never did in 25 years in my hometown of Toronto. Kawartha Lakes also helped me find a new love for my country, with its beautiful nature, kind people, and peaceful energy.”

Mansur’s comment here speaks to the community spirit and people that make up Kawartha Lakes. When we moved here eight years ago, we noticed it as well. It was a subtle difference. People were themselves, helped out others a bit more and prioritized things that make the community pleasant, like parks, trees, community events.

It’s a wonderful place.

The art of the perfect cover

The Advocate typically produces two possible types of cover images. The first – and most common – is taking a photo of a real local person or persons as it relates to our cover story. The second type of cover is what we call a concept cover. This is typically a computergenerated image that connects to the theme we are writing about.

We choose to use concept covers for several reasons. Sometimes we believe our topic can best be visually conveyed with a powerful image over the use of a person’s photo. And sometimes we just can’t get someone to agree to be on our cover in time before deadline.

In 2024, our 12 covers featured nine that were photos of local people, and three concept covers. Of the three concept covers, our December edition featured a painted cover by a local artist.

Last month, our cover story was entitled Small town, big dreams: How do we save our sense of community? It was a popular edition and got people talking – and writing lots of letters to the editor, which we love. A handful of people asked why we used artificial intelligence to produce the cover image, rather than a local artist, which showed a woman staring at a split image of a small town on the left and a town undergoing rapid development on the right.

It’s interesting because no one ever asked about our use of computergenerated stock imagery in the past, which we’d purchase from Adobe. But I chalk this up to the incredible pace of accelerated change under AI. And yet every age is threatened by innovation. Early office computers and word processing software were seen as “typist-killers.” Everyone worried about secretarial roles, and yet these jobs were transformed into administrative assistants, with more time freed for scheduling, project coordination, and communications.

In my profession, professional typesetters and paste-up artists feared total displacement with the use of layout software. And word processor programs like Microsoft Word and WordPerfect introduced built-in spell checkers and a thesaurus. Some journalists and publishing professionals were worried these tools might undercut the need for human editors.

According to Nielsen BooksScan, in Canada about 25,000 thesauruses are sold each year, which marks an 80 per cent drop since 2000. (And I bet the remaining sales are just gifts from well-meaning grandparents, but I can’t prove it.)

AI has become a tool for media organizations, just like spellcheck, built-in thesauruses, layout programs, and stock imagery. A newsroom is a busy place, especially a small local one with limited resources. Producing online media, a weekly newspaper, plus several magazines, means we sometimes need to make quick decisions and can’t always use local artists for a rapid turnaround. What we have committed to doing though, is we’ll tell you if an image was generated with AI. (See pg. 40 for example.)

Admittedly, AI is a new frontier. All innovations are. In this case, its power is truly transformative because its potential application is so all encompassing. I fervently hope governments will provide safeguards for its use. We cannot just leave it in the hands of a cadre of billionaires.

In the meantime, we will continue to make judicious use of AI in our profession, in full recognition of its threat – and incredible opportunity.

From Oakwood farm to California songwriter

The Silverwood family of Oakwood, Ontario, has left a lasting mark both locally and nationally. William Alexander Silverwood and Mary Jane Cooney raised nine children in the mid 1800s, on a farm near the bustling village of Oakwood in modern day Kawartha Lakes.

The most famous locally of their nine is undoubtedly Albert Edward Silverwood, who founded Silverwood’s Dairy in 1928.

The dairy grew into one of Ontario’s largest producers, becoming one of the leading dairy suppliers in the country.

Albert’s brother, William Alexander ‘Billy’ Silverwood, also made significant contributions to Canadian history when he moved to Saskatchewan in 1907. There, he became a successful cattle rancher and later operated the Silverwood

Springs bottle plant, just north of the city. Today, the neighbourhood of Silverwood Heights in Saskatchewan still bears his name.

Another famous, although lesser-known Silverwood offspring, is Francis ‘Frank’ Beatty Silverwood, hailed as one of the great leaders in the American men’s clothing industry. Born on May 18, 1863, Frank was the third of the nine children.

Around 1877, at just 14 years old, Frank left home and traveled to the United States to find work, he sold newspapers in New York City. Unsatisfied with his early struggles, Frank returned to Canada, where he was listed as a clerk in the 1881 census. At 18 he returned to the U.S., working his way across the Pacific Northwest before settling in San Francisco in 1883.

According to research conducted by Chris Jepsen for his article, “F.B. Silverwood and Our State Song” in 2018, “He (Silverwood) couldn’t find a job, and he only had $2.50 to his name.”

Hearing of a job opening at a clothing store in Eureka, northern California, he sold his prized watch to pay for transportation to get there. In Eureka, Frank worked at Crocker Bros., a move that changed his life. It was also here that he became a U.S. citizen in 1892, and formed a lifelong business partnership with fellow merchant, George Edward Nagel.

After five years of hard work, Frank rose to the position of manager at Crocker Bros. In 1892, aged 29, he left the company and partnered with fellow clothier, William A. McNamara, to co-found McNamara & Silverwood Clothiers. However, after just two years, Frank set his sights on Los Angeles, where he opened his own men’s clothing store on May 13, 1894, with Nagel’s support. The opening of the store was announced with an advertisement in the Los Angeles Herald, where Frank personally invited the community: “In view of the fact that we are strangers among you, we take the liberty of specially inviting you to visit our store.”

Frank’s generous personality and humble attitude attracted Mary Funk, the daughter of Reverend Edward Funk and Lydia Newberry, of Illinois. The two were married on January 27, 1897.

This was the beginning of a prosperous venture that would cement Frank Silverwood’s place in California’s commercial history. By 1904, Frank opened a flagship store in downtown Los Angeles, known as Silverwoods, followed by a larger flagship store in San Bernardino in 1910. That same year, Frank and his wife travelled together to Japan, China, and Hawaii, one of Frank’s favourite destinations.

In 1909, inspired by his own difficult childhood as a newsboy in New York, Frank launched a nationwide program to support other young newsboys. He provided 500 boys, many of them orphans, with six copies of sheet music of a popular song to sell for 25 cents each, with the proceeds going to the boys’ savings accounts. Frank matched every dollar in the account if the account was still open in five years. By 1920, he had helped 12,000 boys. Frank’s goal was to teach them the value of saving and investing, writing, “You are living in a land where nobody is held down by caste… where poor boys become great men.” He signed his letters simply as “Daddy,” earning him this nickname.

Even as Frank’s personal life was floundering, his business and songwriting were continuing to gain in popularity.

Although Frank initially avoided the spotlight (there are very few photographs of him), the newsboy program eventually brought attention. His store became known as “the store with a conscience,” and other business owners followed his lead in promoting fair and ethical practices.

According to Jepsen, in the winter of 1912, Frank was sent to New York City on a buying trip and “found himself eating dinner alone in a New York café, homesick for Los Angeles and fed up with the miserable snow and cold.” On the train ride back, Silverwood captured his love for California in a song. Upon returning, he approached Abraham Franklin Frankenstein, conductor of the Orpheum Theatre Orchestra,

who set the music to Frank’s words. The song, I Love You California, quickly gained popularity after its public debut by Mary Garden of the Chicago Grand Opera in early March 1913.

The song’s fame grew, later being played on the S.S. Ancon, the first merchant ship to pass through the Panama Canal in 1914.

It was also adopted as the official song of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco and the PanamaCalifornia Exposition in San Diego in 1915.

His store was revolutionary in its approach to business, becoming one of the first to operate on a profit-sharing basis and pioneering the practice of “all merchandise plainly marked, the same price for everyone.”

However, as his music gained recognition, Frank’s personal life faced turmoil. In 1915, he filed for divorce from Mary, citing her desertion. Around the same time, Frank returned to his hometown to celebrate his parents’ diamond anniversary. The Daily Gazette (Beaumont, California) reported in its September 23, 1915, edition that: “On August 7, Mr. and Mrs. William Alexander Silverwood of Lindsay, Ontario, Canada, parents of Mr. and Mrs. Silverwood of this city, celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

The evening was especially remarkable as all nine of their children were alive, six of whom were present at the festivities.

F.B. Silverwood, the well-known clothing merchant from Los Angeles, attended and acted as toastmaster at the wedding feast. He is also the oldest living Mason in Lindsay.”

In 1920, aged 57, Frank married Happy Winkler from Wisconsin after meeting her earlier that year. The couple wed on Dec. 14, in San Francisco, and enjoyed a month-long honeymoon in Honolulu, Hawaii, where Frank wrote Honolulu, I Am Coming Back Again. However, just eight months after their honeymoon, Happy filed for divorce.

The new store, with 115,000 square feet of retail space across six floors, symbolized Frank’s belief that business should be about more than just profits — it should serve the community and promote fairness and equality.

Frank described the meaning behind his new building to The Los Angeles Times, saying, “I want this new store to stand as a tribute to service, to fair dealing, to the conscience of business. I want it to prove that there’s more to business than just dollars and cents.” He believed that success in business came from treating everyone equally and cultivating genuine friendships.

In 1922, Frank decided to step back from his business, giving the keys to his business partner George Nagel so he could travel the world. However, during a layover in Honolulu, on his way back to California, Frank suffered a stroke in January 1924. His close friend, George Nagel, quickly travelled to be by his side. After returning to Los Angeles, Frank suffered two more strokes and passed away on March 11, 1924. He was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles.

Nearly 30 years after his death, Frank’s tribute to California became the state’s official song. In 1951, the California State Legislature passed a resolution declaring I Love You, California as the official state song, with lyrics by F.B. Silverwood and music by A.F. Frankenstein. Despite the song’s success, Frank and Frankenstein never received royalties from it. All proceeds were designated for the Shriners, with whom Frank had a strong connection through his charitable work.

In keeping with his humble beginnings in Ontario, Frank’s legacy lives on. It does so not just through his business and musical innovations, but through the lives he touched with his kindness, his generosity, and his enduring belief in the power of service. LA

Arctic radar system in Kawartha Lakes Why it matters, and why it’s good for our community

The Department of National Defense has named Kawartha Lakes as one of the first sites for Canada’s new Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar (A-OTHR) Project, part of a $39 billion plan to upgrade NORAD over the next 20 years.

The purpose of this project is to employ high-frequency transmissions that bounce off the upper atmosphere to track objects thousands of kilometres away, a capability that is indispensable in an era of evolving aerospace threats.

Though it may not seem like it, investments like the one announced in our community are incredibly important for Canada’s defence and security capabilities, and as a rural community we should welcome them. But it seems that some members of the community are skeptical about the government’s investment announcement, according to local Facebook group chats. I understand how communities may have questions surrounding the project, but I think it’s essential to recognize

the importance of this investment in the current geopolitical landscape, and how it is a positive investment for our own community.

First, the modernization of NORAD is long overdue, and improving Canada’s overall domain awareness needs to be achieved in a prompt and responsible fashion. NORAD modernization is essential to extend radar coverage, particularly into the high Arctic, to counter advanced missile capabilities, and maintain timely warning and assessment against state-level challenges.

The Arctic was once considered free from global geopolitical tensions, but recent conflicts and state actions have shown it is not immune to such pressures. As a result, Canada has begun to re-invest and update the military capabilities of the Canadian Armed Forces, which has been historically and chronically underfunded by governments of all political stripes. In a time of geopolitical uncertainty, it’s great that we have committed to this plan as a country for our own security.

Second, construction of the project presents unique opportunities for Kawartha Lakes. Economically speaking, the establishment of the 163-hectare radar transmit site will directly create jobs in land preparation, construction, environmental surveying, impact assessments, support services, and long-term operations. This will bring new economic activity to the Bexley Township region and surrounding areas, until the project is completed in 2029. In addition this project will instigate infrastructure enhancements within the area. Developing the transmit site requires access roads, power hookups, and site grading. Upgrades driven by the project can translate into better connectivity for local residences, specifically local transportation links and communication networks.

And arguably most importantly for a rural community, the project will be conducted and constructed in an environmentally responsible manner.

Prior to groundbreaking, DND must complete rigorous environmental site

assessments, climate-risk evaluations, and species-at-risk surveys on the 163-hectare lot, as per DND’s departmental mandate and environmental commitments to green practices. Such as instituting climate adaptation measures, such as erosion control and flood-resistant access roads, which will be designed to ensure the site’s resilience over its 20-year operational span.

Developing the transmit site requires access roads, power hookups, and site grading.

Upgrades driven by the project can translate into better connectivity for local residences, specifically local transportation links and communication networks.

The Department of National Defence’s decision to site one of two Arctic Over-the-Horizon Radar facilities in Kawartha Lakes marks a milestone in the city’s evolution. This initiative under the banner of NORAD modernization will bring economic stimulus, and infrastructure upgrades, while embedding stringent environmental and community engagement commitments.

It elevates Kawartha Lakes on the national stage, spotlighting the region’s willingness to support cutting-edge defence technology. Although this project may seem out of place for our community, this is much bigger than us.

This is not only an economic stimulus – the project is ultimately an important nod to the defence of Canada’s sovereignty and bolstering North American defence and Canadian Arctic security.”

Business

Sherry Peel Sherry Peel, owner of Bigley Shoes in Bobcaygeon, has created an incredible business success story in Kawartha Lakes. After she and her husband, John, purchased Bigley from his parents in 1992, the growth has been startling. As Peel said in a recent Advocate interview, she has managed to grow the business “from a small local shop to a beloved destination for fashion enthusiasts throughout Ontario.” And it’s not just shoes any longer. It has gone from a single shop to a near block-long retail haven in Bobcaygeon, creating a true destination for GTA shoppers and beyond. This influencer says to embrace failure as a steppingstone, rather than a setback, and to stay resilient.

Corey Norman Corey Norman is the new executive director of Launch Kawartha, bringing his experience in leadership and management to the forefront of local entrepreneurial development. Born and raised in Lindsay, he recently moved back with his family to assist entrepreneurs, small business owners, and leaders in building organizational capacity and expanding their capabilities. Norman has helped catalyze entrepreneurism in Kawartha Lakes by leveraging funding and advisory services from Launch’s office space on the third floor of ScotiaBank in Lindsay. Norman is also on the board of directors of the Community Foundation of Kawartha Lakes, where he brings his passion for innovation and regional development to bear.

Brandy Watson Brandy Watson’s motto, “make life beautiful, one adventure at a time,” perfectly captures her approach at Barn and Bunkie. The store offers a diverse selection — vintage treasures, dishcloths, pillows, and more — ensuring there’s something for everyone. With a special focus on Canadian-made goods, Watson showcases both national products and local brands, celebrating community and craftsmanship. Her commitment to quality and originality has made Barn and Bunkie a beloved destination in Fenelon Falls. Her entrepreneurial spirit shone through when she launched the White Cottage Café with her daughter River in 2022, adding a welcoming spot for locals and visitors alike. Watson’s willingness to take risks is continuously rewarded by strong community support and appreciation, reflecting the positive impact she has made in the city.

Glenn Walker is the curator of Maryboro Lodge in Fenelon Falls.

He’s one of the people who have helped make the museum into more than just learning about history – it’s now a community hub where many events happen. Walker, who has worked at the lodge since his time there as a summer student, views it as a place where people can go and have an experience. With only a few permanent exhibits, there’s always something new to view at the lodge.

Walker also spends some of his time writing on historical aspects of Fenelon Falls. He is influential in Kawartha Lakes in his quest to make history come alive in an age of social media.

Erwin Stroobach For more than 20 years, Erwin Stroobach and his wife Angelique have been building a notable music program at Cambridge Street United Church in Lindsay. Stroobach’s talents at the console of the church’s pipe organ can be heard each Sunday – but also during the biennial Phantom of the Organ event, which showcases the instrument’s unique sound for audiences well beyond the walls of CSUC. Under Stroobach’s direction, the church’s Voices of Victory choir has toured throughout central and eastern Canada, taken their talents to Manhattan, and introduced many local youth to beautiful choral music. In 2024, Stroobach’s choirs performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall, and the Noon Hour Concerts he organizes during Lent are much-anticipated events in the local arts scene.

Ray Marshall Ray Marshall is a name synonymous with the arts community.

Now a key member of the Kawartha Lakes Art Council, he is perhaps best known as the longtime general manager of the Academy Theatre from 1985-2006. Prior to those 21 consecutive years of service, he spent eight summers at the Kawartha Summer Theatre as a lighting and sound technician, among other roles. Mentored by the legendary Dennis Sweeting, Marshall strongly believes in the local arts council being involved in the community by supporting major projects, like the Windswept mural that was recently installed in downtown Lindsay, and bringing local artists together. He has always believed the arts community is beneficial both economically and philosophically. Beyond his deep background in theatre, Marshall is influential in the local arts scene writ large.

Jodie Collins Elementary school teacher and coach Jodie Collins is dedicated to fostering a lifelong love of sport in kids. Whether she’s guiding school teams, refining the strokes of Lindsay Lightning Bolts swimmers, or running drills with the Lindsay Wildcats basketball players, Collins brings encouragement and positivity to everything she does. Her genuine passion for sport and her drive to help young athletes reach their goals set her apart from the average coach. With kindness, patience, and unwavering commitment, she’s helping build a foundation of positive sport experiences for children across Kawartha Lakes and beyond. Following in the footsteps of her father — CFL player and three-time Grey Cup champion Doug Collins — Collins has embraced her role as an athlete, teacher, and coach, and our kids are all the better for it.

Pete Sanderson Retired teacher and school administrator Pete Sanderson has spent almost all his adult life volunteering to make athletics available for all. Whether it be as a pioneering men’s and women’s softball and hardball coach for the better part of 25 years, a long-time member of the Lindsay Optimist Club and a key driving force behind their wildly successful spring soccer program, or as a volunteer member of the Kawartha Lakes Parks Advisory Committee (KLPAC), Sanderson puts in the hours so others can play. His long-time commitment to the KLPAC has helped improve the quality and quantity of athletic and recreational facilities in the city. In 2024, Sanderson was enshrined in the Lindsay and District Sports Hall of Fame as both a coach and a builder.

Aaron Carruth With a father and grandfather who coached in their communities, Aaron Carruth is hardwired to teach young athletes in Kawartha Lakes. The Langton Public School teacher finds time to coach soccer, volleyball, basketball, flag football, and track and field in his own school, has convened tournaments for several junior and senior sports, and once organized a full season of events for primary aged students. For 15 years, after his workday is done, he heads to Fenelon Falls Secondary School to coach the senior football team.

His involvement extends beyond school sports, coaching hockey, helping rejuvenate the Kawartha Lakes Fury lacrosse organization (securing a gold medal at the provincial festival for a U9 team in the process), and with his wife Bronwyn, running two, week-long youth sports camps every summer.

This woman has been making her mark in Bobcaygeon for the past decade. Already a seasonal resident, she moved to the village in 2015 and has – in the words of the municipal motto – jumped into a variety of volunteer commitments that have beautified her adopted home community and raised awareness about its landscapes and landmarks. The number of committees and organizations with which Adare has been involved is remarkable: Bobcaygeon Communities in Bloom, Environmental Action Bobcaygeon, Impact 32, and the Kawartha Lakes Municipal Heritage Committee, among others. From spearheading the installation of kayak racks at Lock 32 to planting trees at the Bobcaygeon Beach Park and ensuring that EV drivers have a place to charge their vehicles, Adare is one to watch.

Jim Armstrong This Fenelon Falls resident keeps himself busy in service of community causes. For instance, as president of the Kawartha Works Community Co-operative, he spearheads the umbrella organization that helps not-for-profit initiatives thrive, especially those with artistic, cultural, recreational, health, environmental, economic, and social improvement aims. The bike rentals in Bobcaygeon and Fenelon Falls, the Grove Theatre, and the Fenelon Falls downtown sculpture project all benefited from the co-op’s expertise. Most recently, the former chair of the North Kawartha Family Health Team was involved in coordinating the creation of a teenage drop-in centre after community members raised concerns there weren’t enough activities for youth in Fenelon Falls. His wife, Kathy, says Jim’s 20-years of volunteer service stems simply from a desire to make the community a better place to live.

Caitlin Patterson To say Caitlin Patterson is a busy person might be an understatement. As chief operating officer of Ampere Canada, Patterson leads a team of 70. Ampere — with its southern office in Lindsay — works alongside rural, remote, and Indigenous communities and creates opportunities for learners of all ages to strengthen and cultivate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) skills. Patterson is also an entrepreneur and wellness advocate. Currently completing her PhD in Natural Medicine, she runs her private practice out of Muse Laser + Wellness Clinic in Lindsay, focussing on women’s health, specifically to support clients with addressing stress, hormone health and gut imbalances through science-backed natural medicine. Patterson grew up in Bethany and currently resides in Janetville with her family.

Angie Kim Although Lindsay has had a long tradition of Chinese restaurants, authentic Japanese and Korean fare was lacking in town until Angie Kim and Isaac Jeon opened Teriyaki Town in 2011. Surrounded by chain restaurants in the west end of Lindsay, it has for nearly 15 years been leaving a positive impression on diners who seek out something culturally unique for lunch or dinner. In a 2021 interview with the Advocate, Kim and Jeon spoke with pride about their commitment to serving dishes featuring “local produce, sustainable fish, and innovative ingredients.” This has clearly been a recipe for success, as the steady crowd of lunch and dinner guests at Teriyaki Town’s busy and inviting interior suggests.

Arptia Kermani Along with her husband and son, Arpita Kermani has owned Judy’s Place — a local diner with long-time customers — since October 2022. In that time, they’ve established a loyal customer base by curating to them. Customers help to make the menu by letting Kermani know what they like, what they don’t, and what they want to see introduced. With a new menu printed every four months, she makes sure there’s something for everyone. But what really makes this unassuming diner special is that Kermani and her family are acutely aware of food insecurity. The restaurant regularly gives food to those in need and accepts donations to help them accomplish their goal of helping others. Whether it’s one person who shows up at their door or more than a dozen, this community-minded restaurant never says no.

Kim Locke The Trent Lakes Cheese Company strives to bring the big city cheese market experience to Kawartha Lakes – and we think they succeed.

Located in Bobcaygeon, Kim Locke imports cheeses from England, Italy, Holland, Switzerland, France and Spain, and says she has been overwhelmed by support from local residents. The company focus is on artisan cheeses produced in small batches with high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. Business began in 2018 with a booth at a local farmers’ market, and she has had a storefront since 2023.

Saying her business thrives from June to December, the latest expansion of the business involves a cooled, mobile charcuterie cart that she brings to festivals, weddings and corporate events. This ensures their products aren’t sitting out, staying covered and fresh as possible, also allowing for maximum choice.

Dr. Tashi Rabgey has – together with her sister Losang and their parents, Pencho and Tsering – been encouraging local residents to look beyond their cultural, geographical, and personal borders for years now through supporting the work of Machik. This is an organization that has made education a reality for many thousands of Tibetan children. Rabgey is a leading scholar on the relationship between China and Tibet and has worked as a research professor of International Affairs at George Washington University. With roots in Lindsay, Dr. Rabgey and her family have been a valuable link between the local and international scene, one so necessary to fostering understanding between people and cultures. Under the leadership of the Rabgey sisters, Machik continues to be a force for change in the world.

Kathy Ridout Kathy Ridout is the new executive director of Kawartha Lakes Food Source. Having spent 15 years developing and fundraising in the non-profit and public sector, Ridout moved to Fenelon Falls in 2022 and jumped at the chance to work with Food Source. Last year, its member food banks were visited 16,569 times, serving 2,744 unique individuals—an increase of 245 individuals over 2023. The organization reports increased use coupled with less donations – part of a broader trend the new ED is well aware of. Food Source currently works with nine different food banks across the area, and under Ridout’s leadership, the organization is set to strengthen its impact and reach even more individuals, all the while lobbying for more government action to address the structural issues of hunger.

Kim Coulter Kim Coulter is the communications specialist at the Ross Memorial Hospital Foundation. With fundraising campaigns always on the go, she is a key figure in ensuring the hospital is securing the money and resources it requires to meet community needs. With a growing community and an aging population, mixed with changing technology, RMH launched the ‘We are the Ross’ campaign (led by Tim Shauf and the rest of the foundation team) to raise $25 million.

With $21 million already raised for larger donations, it allowed the hospital to make critical acquisitions, such as the new MRI, the CT Scanner, and the clinical information system already in the hospital. Coulter and her colleagues are turning to the community for the last $4 million, a pivotal time in the hospital’s history.

Dan Joyce Since winning a hotly contested Ward 4 seat on council in 2022, business and marketing executive Dan Joyce has slowly, but surely, started to carve out a niche for himself as a councillor comfortable with big numbers and large projects. Joyce currently sits on the Kawartha Lakes Library Board, the bylaw committee, the drainage committee, the waste management advisory committee, the adhoc budget committee, the Kawartha Lakes-Haliburton Social Services Board and the Haliburton Kawartha Peterborough Region District Health Unit Board. While not the most vocal of councillors, Joyce is developing a reputation for asking tough financial questions before big projects are approved. It’s clear he wants money spent on necessities only and that projects are serving the people of the city and Ward 4 well.

Cheri Davidson For the last nine years, Cheri Davidson has been the public face of the City of Kawartha Lakes in her position as manager of communications, advertising and marketing. She and her associates are responsible for liaising with the Kawartha Lakes press corps, managing the city website, crafting social posts, and more. This year, Davidson and team did yeoman’s service following the late March ice storm that crippled huge swaths of the city. Despite the difficulties faced by dangerous weather and dodgy power availability, her department effectively got the message out to manage the chaos.

With the unfortunate summer fires next testing the communications team, they were effective then, too, even while down one person. Everywhere Mayor Doug Elmslie was found, Davidson and her team were not far away.

Cathie Ritchie City Clerk Cathie Ritchie is one of the most experienced individuals at the city who helps the municipality run efficiently. From her role sitting at the right hand of the mayor at council meetings, available for advice on the minutia of the Municipal Act, Ritchie was thrust into the limelight this year in her role as municipal election returning officer. With the resignation of Ward 5 councillor Eric Smeaton last November, the city needed to run a byelection. Ritchie and her department kicked into high gear and despite working around both a federal and provincial election, the voters in Ward Five had their say in early April, sending Mark Doble to city hall as a newly minted member. The election went off without a hitch, thanks to Ritchie’s veteran expertise and knowledge.

Lindsay Exhibition returns for 171st year with new attractions and community focus

Sept. 13 marks the return of the Lindsay Exhibition, now 171 years old.

Lance Nachoff is the new general manager of the Lindsay Agricultural Society, and he says visitors can expect several new things mixed with familiar favourites like the demolition derby, livestock shows, and a variety of rides and vendors to see.

One thing he’s looking forward to is being able to give back to the community. With $10,000 in funding from 100 Men Kawartha Lakes, there will be a community giving hub where local charities will all be together in a tent to “raise awareness of what they do and their role in the community.”

They will also be partnering with Autism Resources Kawartha to create a sensory safe zone, giving those feeling overwhelmed with loud noises and bright lights a chance to relax. “In the past, maybe families that had children with autism would steer clear of coming to the fair,” Nachoff said.

The exhibition offers free parking and is introducing a payone-price wristband which includes admission for Sept. 1314 and from Sept. 17-21.

The first Saturday and Sunday is a horsepower weekend.

Highlights will include several large trucks, including firetrucks and tractors that kids will have a chance to touch and sit in, as well as having the opportunity to speak to farmers and firefighters. Horse pulls will also be happening, and a much-anticipated visit from Bluey and Bingo for the kids. There will be something for everyone to do on opening weekend.

Following that, Monday and Tuesday will see livestock judging. “It’s two slower days for the public. They are welcome to come in to watch the judging and the displaying of that, but there won’t be any other kinds of entertainment,” Nachoff said.

Wednesday kicks off the games and rides fun for family day, where guests will be treated with free admission, but fairgoers are welcome to make a donation. “We are taking donations at the door throughout the fair. Anyone who brings any perishable food items of a value of $10 or more gets in for free,” Nachoff said, with all proceeds going to A Place Called Home and local food banks.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? Olive and Fig-turned-Sprig and the legality of business names

When Amanda Moorhead opened her new store, Olive and Fig Café, she was excited to bring her business to the community. However, only three weeks after opening Moorhead was hit with news she wasn’t expecting. Another Olive and Fig, located in Toronto, was having confused customers calling them expecting Moorhead to answer.

Moorhead was baffled on how this could have happened. Having gone through NUANS – essentially a search data base – she assumed her business name was good to go. NUANS is the Government of Canada’s business name and trademark search tool which provides a list of existing business names, corporate names and trademarks. However, for someone not versed in the business world the results can be a lot to take in – and things can get missed.

When it wasn’t noticed during the NUANS search it was easy for the similar 30

name to slip through the cracks. Neither NUANS nor the Ontario registry are responsible for spotting similar or confusingly similar business names when someone registers.

Jessica Bolla from Ward Lawyers understands the stress and confusion that can arise when navigating business naming and brand protection in Ontario. She was not involved in the Moorhead case. She did offer insights into the challenges presented by the business naming process especially for new users.

In practice, there are varying levels of business name protection from incorporation to registering trademarks. A NUANS report is the first step in each case, but results can be heavily influenced by how the search is completed.

This can lead to similar names becoming lost in the results or the display of an overwhelming number of results.

Applicants are left to review results and must affirm to the Ontario Business Registry that the proposed name is available and is not identical orconfusingly similar to an existing name.

Moorhead eventually received a ceaseand-desist letter – and that’s when panic set in. “I don’t know how I’m supposed to do this at this point when I literally just opened…it’s equated to almost $12,000 worth of things that I’m going to need to change.”

From cups with Olive and Fig printed on them, menus and signage, it was a lot for Moorhead to figure out with a deadline of the end of July to get everything changed. She was able to change the name, and the café is now named Olive and Sprig. To her it was worth it to invest more in changing signage than go through lawyers where she might lose.

“I don’t know how I’m supposed to do this at this point when I literally just opened…it’s equated to almost $12,000 worth of things that I’m going to need to change.”

“I have to redo my signs, menus, all of my business cards. I have to redo my cups…my website alone was $5,000 and now I have to redo it,” Moorhead said. “It’s the things you don’t think of when you start a business because you’re all excited.”

The part that Moorhead is most frustrated by is that she believes she went through all the right steps. “This is not my mistake. I did everything correctly.

I am registered, I have articles of incorporation, I have all my CRA registered.

Everything is legitimate, and somebody dropped the ball somewhere, so somebody needs to be responsible for the error.”

Bolla understands the frustration experienced by new business owners who want their businesses to start off with a solid legal foundation but feel underserved by the process. She en-

courages anyone starting a business to speak with a trusted advisor or lawyer who specializes in business law.

“Business advisors and lawyers are scalable supports for each phase of your business,” she said.

“We enjoy helping clients at every stage of their business and being a part of a thriving local start up community.”

There are extra steps those opening a business can also do such as brainstorming distinct name options, searching for conflicts in existing databases and checking domain and social media availability are good steps to take.

Moorhead wants people to know that despite the name change the business is not going anywhere. “Our products are not changing, our menus aren’t changing, the stuff that we offer isn’t changing.”

VCCS HELPS KAWARTHA LAKES YOUTH BREAK INTO COMPETITIVE JOB MARKET

According to StatsCan, the unemployment rate sits at 6.9 per cent nationally.

However, for youth aged 15-24, their numbers are much higher, sitting at nearly 54 per cent in July.

Brenda Roxburgh, executive director at VCCS Employment Services, says this isn’t uncommon and that youth unemployment has historically been higher than the national rate, but it’s not from a lack of youth trying.

One of the challenges she’s found is helping youth be able to manage their expectations when entering the workforce. “It’s (about) recognizing where the opportunities are, based on the education they’ve got,” she said. “One of the things we do really well, is just helping to clear the trees so they can see the whole forest.”

Her goal is to try and help young people know where to start by allowing “them to see where there may be opportunities that aren’t as obvious.”

Roxburgh has found that many of the youth coming to her really are only looking at the more obvious job choices. If you’re able to pay attention to your values, skill and experiences then you can find meaningful opportunities instead of just applying for the first job you’re qualified for.

At VCCS, the YSTEP (Youth Success Through Employment Program) is designed to empower young adults aged 18-29 as they navigate the path to employment. The program begins with a four-week, in-class component, where participants engage in valuable preparation such as resume development, interview readiness, and career discovery.

After completing the classroom phase, youth transition into a nine-week work placement, fully funded by the program, giving them hands-on experience with local employers and a meaningful step toward their career goals. “This is a good opportunity, and it helps offset the training costs for the employers,” Roxburgh said, noting that training costs can be expensive and can lead to employers not hiring youth as often.

In Kawartha Lakes, the largest employment sector is service and hospitality. While Roxburgh acknowledges these are valuable industries, she notes that “wages tend to be a little lower,” and people can’t realistically live on minimum wage.

As a result, many working in this field often need a second job, making it a less attractive option for youth seeking stable and desirable employment.

She’s found that jobs in the trades can offer more stability, which includes positions like early childhood educators, where many don’t realize they can do an apprenticeship as opposed to schooling.

KENT FLORIST BLOSSOMS INTO ITS 10TH YEAR

Ann Scarlett owned a flower shop in her 20s but then started working for other people while she was busy raising a young family. When the opportunity to have her own business came up again, and with her kids all grown, it seemed like the perfect time to go for it.

Ten years later, and Kent Florist is still welcoming new and returning customers through its doors.

Now Scarlett works with her daughter, Beth Rescorl. She has worked on and off in the store through university, but has now spent the last five years working alongside her mom.

“We usually get along really well,” Scarlett said.

Having different generations working together has been beneficial for the business. “It’s nice having me as an older perspective and Beth knowing all the social media aspects of it,” Scarlett said.

With the slogan ‘more than just a flower shop,’ Scarlett says it’s always interesting to see how different people have different ideas of what the store is. “Some people think we’re just a gift shop, because they’re maybe from out of town; people who are from Lindsay often just think of us as a flower shop.”

The store has a variety of items, from candles, soaps, jewellery, towels, table runners, and more.

Flowers are something people reach for in “all their happy and sad occasions,” Scarlett said.

During the days of lockdown, the business continued to thrive. Offering delivery service made it easy for people to send flowers to each other when they couldn’t go to events or see their family. With Scarlett and Rescorl part of the same household, it made it possible for them to still work out of the store together and fulfill orders.

At the same time Kent Street was a construction zone with the downtown revitalization in progress. “We have lovely big windows, so we did displays and priced everything in the windows, and then people could pick up out back.”

With events always happening downtown, Scarlett and Rescorl are happy to be a part of the community. They find the businesses on the street are supportive of one another, and they enjoy giving back to the community when they can.

The next big event lined up for them is Lindsay’s downtown block party on Sept. 12 and 13. “We’re making crowns and halos with kids out front for the day,” Scarlett said.

“We’ll also be donating to a local charity,” Rescorl said.

Christmas inventory is already starting to come in, as this is a business where planning ahead is key. “If I had a crystal ball and I could just tell what was going to sell and then we just order perfectly,” Scarlett said, that would be ideal.

“Every day is a new experience, there’s always something new to learn and do. You just have to be creative and come up with different ideas,” Rescorl said.

As for Scarlett, she feels Kent Florist has made it to 10 years by “moving forward and doing new things.”

Goodbye summer, hello routine

Every summer, I tell myself we’ll slow down. We’ll have long mornings on the deck, lazy afternoons at the beach, and maybe even ice cream for dinner just because we can. And yet, before I know it, summer has turned into a sprint, not a stroll, with calendars full of drop-off times, camp spirit days, and attempts at summer fun squeezed in between.

Last summer, we juggled three kids in different camps, at different locations, with completely different schedules.

Some days, my husband and I felt more like chauffeurs and less like parents, shuttling kids around at all hours of the workday. We actually looked forward to the weeks with no camps at all, just for the sheer relief from the driving and calendar notifications. This year we simplified: one daycare for all three kids, with the same hours, same location, and even lunch included. As most parents can agree, that was nothing short of a summer miracle.

In a way, taking over this space from the talented Aliyah feels a little like a September reset of my own But no matter how much we try to streamline summer, it still has its own rhythm. With a husband in his last semester of school and kids adjusting to new routines, our household felt a little chaotic at times. There were many days where plans changed and expectations were adjusted.

But woven into that chaos were the moments that made summer feel special. Ice cream cones dripping faster

than they could be eaten, backyard performances with the kids that demanded an audience, and the constant chorus of “watch this!” from the pool.

I got what I wanted from this summer: long sunny days, open-ended evenings, and the freedom from packing lunches. There was a looseness to the season that felt good, even if it came with its share of work and coordination.

And yet, I welcome the return to the school year with open arms. September brings the comfort of routine — evenings that fall into predictable patterns and the ability to plan without cross-referencing a dozen camp newsletters.

And speaking of new beginnings, this column marks one of mine. In a way, taking over this space from the talented Aliyah feels a little like a September reset of my own — a chance to bring fresh perspective, share a few stories, and maybe get a letter back one day.

It’s funny how personal resets often align with seasonal ones. Here in Kawartha Lakes, the shift is already obvious: the boats on the Trent-Severn start thinning out, the fall fair posters go up, and the desire to cook fresh apple pies increases with every fall farmer’s market. It’s a bittersweet reminder that summer is fleeting, but also a reassurance that routine is waiting on the other side.

So here’s to the seasons of change, whether that’s new schools, new schedules, or even a new column. At least here, in this space, nobody is expecting me to dress for superhero day.

Print is dead; long live print

“Print is dead,” according to Dr. Egon Spengler.

But chances are you’re reading this in the print version of The Advocate, so as a print reader you’ll be happy to find out that Dr. Egon Spengler is not a credible source, but is in fact a fictional character played by Harold Ramis in the 1984 film Ghostbusters.

Debate over the decline of print has persisted for decades – a brief period compared to the long history of printed communication since the printing press invention in 1440. Creating and consuming written content that is superimposed onto a physical medium you can put in your pocket has been a favourite pastime of humans through wars, plagues, natural disasters, on ships, trains, and planes, and during perfectly uneventful and drowsy summer days in the country (if Jane Austen is to be believed).

And when the Wi-Fi goes out, like it did during that ice storm in March this year, what else is there to do but sit inside and read a book – or hopefully a magazine – by a woodburning fire? It’s ironic how well ‘fire’ and ‘paper’ go together in this way (cue shameless plug for local company Fireside Publishing House, the producers of this magazine).

Print books are doing well, with Statistics Canada reporting that “Canada’s book publishing industry is making a comeback.” We’re talking about the sale of physical books in physical stores increasing 10.5 per cent in 2022, “almost back to pre-Covid levels.” In fact, 79 per cent of books purchased by Canadians just two years ago were print copies, according to BookNet Canada (a non-profit organization partially funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage). Once thought to be print’s

biggest threat, e-books only made up 14 per cent of books purchased.

Cheri Hogg, owner of Kent Books in Lindsay says, “there was a bit of a dip when (e-books) first came out, and everyone was like, ‘oh, this is a brandnew thing.’ And then it was gone. People don’t like them.”

Of course, sales don’t always represent reading rates and rising revenue does not tell us the whole story. Plenty of people buy books and never crack the front cover. Yours truly has been guilty of this on a few occasions. And while magazine and newspaper revenues are reported to be on the decline, they still have a solid readership. Media in Canada reports that “magazines reach 79 per cent of Ontarians,” and “nearly two in three Canadian adults read or access print or digital daily newspaper content in an average week” with 25 per cent reading print-only and 37

cal books, primarily autobiographies of musicians. He hopes to pass on his book collection to his grandkids.

The fact that Campkin’s books are in print matters. Receiving an email or flash-drive containing your grandfather’s e-book collection just isn’t the same as being able to hold the same book he’s held, read, and loved. While perusing the pages, Campkin says, “the odd time I’m reading a passage and if it’s really hitting something, I’ll take a picture of it with my phone.”

35 per cent reading a combination of print and digital. “Only 11 per cent read newspapers via computer only,” according to Media in Canada.

In our own reader survey for the Advocate, conducted in February of this year, 61 per cent of readers who responded reported that print was their preferred reading method, with 23 per cent reading a combination of the Advocate’s print and digital.

Brad Campkin has been reading the Advocate and Kawartha Lakes Weekly since their inaugural issues (in spring 2018 and summer 2024, respectively).

Though he reads each publication in both print and digital, depending on what’s most convenient, he notes, “I always said when I retire, I want to get a newspaper delivered every day and just sit and read it because I couldn’t do that my whole life” because I was too busy, he said. The experience of receiving a printed newspaper brings about an especially unhurried experience that need not be interrupted by the gnawing notifications that come with reading news on your phone or laptop.

It also happens to be a regular practice of the Kawartha Lakes Museum and Archives (KLMA), who hope to share printed items of today with future generations. The process of scanning print and physical objects to make a digital catalogue is incredibly time consuming but allows for improved access and better preservation of originals. By having a digital catalogue to supplement the physical archives, people can peruse, for instance, decades of old local newspapers without leaving their home.

Our very own history writer, Ian McKechnie says, “I regularly make use of the digitized papers for the Just in Time column” in the Advocate. And though this access helps speed up the process, he goes on to say, “there is something special about being able to handle physical and print records.”

McKechnie says working with records that someone else created and handled – “someone who lived and loved, worked and played many generations previous – is a powerful, tangible reminder that we are not alone,”

he says, quoting the United Church of Canada’s New Creed.

Managing director of KLMA, Barbara Doyle, says that although digital files can help with access generally, and have been very useful at the museum, it does not guarantee access. “We are seeing (digital) things being deleted, even by governments, and we see things going behind paywalls, making them less accessible.”

The sheer volume of digital originals (photos that were taken on a phone, or digital posts created and shared on social media) make it extremely challenging to collect. Doyle says, “museums like mine do not have the capacity to scrape for all that information all the time. We can’t keep every single Facebook post we see that has local relevance. So much local content is being lost to the digital world.” So, although digital helps us access information today, it has poor long-term preservation, at least in the world of museums and archives, where long term is defined as the next 100 years.

Due to a variety of reasons, including the perceived ease of storage with digital and the high cost of print, these days most people keep their photographs in a digital format only. “For a time in our global life that is the most photographed, the most documented, it is the least printed,” says Doyle.

Doyle says, “physical and print is incredibly expensive to produce compared to digital. It’s not as immediate.

But in terms of permanence, paper is king.”

Magazines haven’t necessarily lost readers, but their advertisers have increasingly migrated to online options, thinking these might be superior. But they’re not. For instance, new Lindsay resident, Shelly Totino, is a fan of the Advocate in print – and she’s a Millennial.

“For a time in our global life that is the most photographed, the most documented, it is the least printed,” “I suppose, when I think about it, there’s a tangible quality to holding a magazine that invites a slower pace, more focus,” she says.

“It feels like there’s more space to breathe, to truly absorb what I’m reading,” she adds.

Advocate Publisher Roderick Benns started the very magazine you’re holding as digital only at first in 2017, “and about a half year later, we tried the first print magazine.”

“And perhaps the crazy thing is, it was ‘in the black’ from the very first day,” he says. Even with the challenges facing the industry, on a local level at least, Benns has proven that there’s room for print to thrive.

“There was an appetite for something that was local, print based, and that both brought us together and had something thoughtful to say,” he added.

The Medium Canada’s Marshall McLuhan’s famous and oft-misunderstood quote, “The medium is the message,” means that the way a message is delivered (the medium) — whether through print, television, or digital platforms — has a greater impact on society than the actual content of the message itself.

For example, watching a news story on TV shapes one’s experience differently than reading it in a print newspaper or magazine. McLuhan argued that each medium creates a unique environment that reshapes human behaviour and perception. It’s also passive consumption, where there’s less control over what details are emphasized. Reading a magazine or newspaper means more depth and analysis, with background, context, and expert commentary, allowing for

jumping from headline to headline, often guided by algorithms or hyperlinks. That’s a major contrast compared to a physical magazine or newspaper, where the layout encourages linear navigation. As well, print implies curated, vetted content, so the medium itself lends credibility and a sense of finality.

There are benefits to choosing to read in print over digital, especially as many of us are staring at screens all day for work. We are also coordinating plans via text. Or catching up with the people we love, who live hours away via video call. We pay our bills, we book flights, or we often Internet-fact check that one friend who seems to think TikTok or The Facebook is a substitution for real research. Print gives our eyes a break from the strain caused by the backlighting of screens. It also helps with comprehension of what we’re reading.

According to a study done at the University of Valencia, “print reading over a long period of time could boost comprehension skills by six to eight times more than digital reading does.”

Screens are increasingly difficult to avoid if you want to exist in the world today, and to take part in it. But print gives us an opportunity to learn, enjoy stories, and even connect with our community without adding hours of screen time to our already screenheavy lives. Even this story about print was written digitally on Microsoft Word and then read and reread on a screen before it was printed and ended up in your hands.

So, is print really dead? Or is it simply being pushed and pulled into different areas of our lives, taking on a new significance where it was previously taken for granted? In the end, print helps us slow down, allowing for deeper thought, reflection, and connection.

That’s not such a bad idea at this point in human history.

An uptick in ticks When our golden doodle was 10 years old, we found ticks on her following three separate hikes. After years of forest walks, it was the first time we had encountered a tick. That was a decade ago.

More recently our family dogs have picked up ticks – in our yard. They were all of the black-legged/deer tick variety, the kind that can transmit Lyme disease, among other illnesses. Those critters probably arrived after hitchhiking on a bird or white-footed mouse. We don’t have white-tail deer in the backyard.

Haliburton and Kawartha Lakes are now on the map of established tick areas in Ontario. Those little blood suckers have spread widely in southern and eastern Canada since first being detected at Long Point on Lake Erie in the 1970s.

Among other factors, our rapidly increasing global temperatures have created perfect conditions for the eightlegged critters: longer warm seasons allow for multiple breeding cycles, and more of them survive our warmer winters. It’s just something else we can thank the fossil fuel industry for. Those oil and gas emissions keep cranking up our temperatures.

A recent study showed 25 per cent of ticks sampled in Ontario and Quebec carried the Lyme bacteria, though that can be much higher in Nova Scotia and the northern U.S. An infected bite can cause a bullseye rash, fever, headaches and joint pain. Caught early, Lyme is treatable with antibiotics.

Long term effects are more serious.

Public Health agencies nationally, provincially and locally keep tabs on Lyme disease numbers. In 2016, our area saw 12 lab-confirmed cases. Last year the number was 94.

Canadian cases doubled from 2022 to 2024.

On the good news side, along with more global heating, we’re also seeing more Virginia opossums in Canada.

They look like large, white-faced rats, but they’re friend, not foe. Opossums help clean up the environment, dining on carcass bones, rotting vegetation and insects – including lots of ticks.

Several tick vaccines are now being developed, one of which will complete human trials by the end of the year. Hopefully vaccine solutions are available before the Lone Star tick makes inroads in Canada. It is spreading rapidly in the U.S. And its ill-fated victims develop a meat allergy that shows up several hours after eating that steak or pork chop. In the most severe cases, it will cause an anaphylactic reaction, or heart problems.

We can encounter ticks in the woods when we brush past long grasses or branches. When they bite, they immediately “medicate” the area, numbing it while keeping the blood flowing. But they need to be attached for 24-36 hours before they can share the bacteria that causes Lyme, so the sooner they’re removed the better. Health agencies recommend doing a tick check, showering, and throwing clothes in a hot drier for 10 minutes immediately after a walk in the woods.

To discourage tick encounters of the ick kind Health Canada advises: • Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants.

• Tuck your shirt into your pants and your pants into your socks.

• Wear closed-toe shoes.

• Use bug spray with DEET or Icaridin (always follow label directions).

• Walk on cleared paths or walkways.

We need to learn to live with ticks – and ticking off that check list is a good start. At least until a vaccine is available, or we’ve domesticated opossums. LA 43

Central was more than just another elementary school.

It was for four generations of Lindsay residents a kind of preparatory institution, a way station en route to high school. Parkview Public School’s 2003 yearbook, prepared by that year’s graduating Grade 6 classes, reveals that a significant number of students were looking forward to having their own lockers at Central, as well as enjoying the freedom to leave the school grounds for lunch. For this writer, the creaking old wooden floors and Edwardian architecture were the big draws: to walk the halls of Central was to take a trip back in time.

Central Senior School

Four generations of high school prep comes to a close The installation of playground equipment on the grounds of Central Senior Public School earlier this past summer heralds a significant change in the history of public education here in Lindsay. Starting in September 2025, the venerable old institution will welcome Grades 4 to 8 French Immersion students – and will thus cease to be a Grades 7 and 8 intermediate school, a role it has held for 70 years.

Although it was constructed in 1910, Central traced its origins back to the Union Grammar School, an eccentric-looking Gothic Revival building that was located approximately mid-way between Central and what is now LCVI. Opened in 1863, the Union school served the needs of elementary school students until Central School was ready to welcome students nearly half a century later.

(Alfred Lafferty, who served as the Union school’s headmaster from 1871 through 1872, would go on to become the first Black high school principal in Ontario.)

The red-brick Central School was opened with great fanfare on July 6, 1911. Local clergymen offered up prayers and readings from the Bible, while Thomas Stewart, chairman of the board of education, spoke glowingly about the importance of free public education. Distinguished by symmetrical massing, the new building sported 11 classrooms and was crowned with a belfry that remains in situ to this day.

decade, and it offers some interesting – and amusing – insights about life at Central. “This year a graduation will not be held,” intoned a disappointed correspondent on June 3, 1965. “The staff felt that in other years the girls outdid themselves with expensive fussy dresses and high heels that did not suit a grade eight student.”

Despite their seemingly spacious quarters, Lindsay’s elementary schools were becoming crowded by the late 1940s. Trying to mitigate classroom congestion, the school board approved a plan in 1954 that would see Central become a Grades 7 and 8 “senior school” starting in September of 1955. This plan also called for the elimination of two recesses and a shortening of Central’s lunch hour.

To smooth out the transition, space was initially provided at Central for a Grades 3-4 and Grades 5-6 combined class, respectively. Not many students can claim to have attended their elementary school twice, but this is exactly what happened to Linda Thomson as a result of these changes. Thomson was enroled at Central from 1952 through the middle part of that decade, after which she had to make the walk up to Alexandra Public School for Grade 6 before returning to Central for Grades 7 and 8.

Perhaps somewhat awkwardly, Thomson’s mother, Jean Tompkins, was also her classroom teacher. “Mom taught gym at Central,” Thompson recalls. “We learned to dance with the boys’ gym class to be ready for our first close encounter of the opposite sex – the ‘Sadie Hawkins’ dance (an event in which girls invited boys to a school dance, rather than the other way around). If adding strings of numbers was frightening, inviting a boy to the dance was even more so.”

Population growth in Lindsay spurred the construction of an unsightly-looking addition to Central in 1962, complete with a new gymnasium and new classrooms.

By the mid-1960s, its identity as an intermediate school was becoming firmly entrenched among students, who were by that point wearing school uniforms. A regular column authored by the “Central Senior Press Club” appeared in the pages of the Lindsay Daily Post throughout that

Central was also long known for its arts programming, with music classes being conducted by Mrs. Erma Garbig through the 1960s. By 1963, its choir numbered 80 voices and when it wasn’t performing in the school auditorium, it would join the Kinsmen Band at its Moods in Music concerts. “I think my favourite memories involve the bands, choirs, and musicals,” says Eric Smeaton, who taught music at Central for several years in the first part of this century.

“There were rehearsals pretty much each day, so you really connected with the students and became a family of sorts,” Smeaton reminisces.

Those musicals were among the memories that have stuck with Katherine Eddy, who graduated from Central 20 years ago. “My two years at Central Senior were a special time,” she tells the Advocate. “I couldn’t have asked for better teachers and our principal, Mr. Sanderson, who really cared about their students and their success. The memories made in choir, taking part in The Music Man and school concerts, and simply walking the halls will last a lifetime.”

Though an intermediate school no more, Central’s legacy as Lindsay’s answer to a preparatory school will assuredly live on as it begins the next chapter in its long and intriguing history. LA 49

Climate action should hit the fan

To date, 2025 has been an eventful year for weather events. That’s understating it. It has been a year of the type of storm that hits the fan.

We had the snowiest January on record. Lindsay, for example, received 113 cm of snow in January, over three times the average amount and required extraordinary public and private snow removal.

And who can forget the ice storm that happened in late March. The city was required to declare a state of emergency that lasted two weeks. Power outages and damage to buildings and property damage were widespread.

There were more than 2,300 hydro poles destroyed. The clean-up went on for weeks. This timeline pales in comparison to the decades it will take the tree canopy to repair itself.

From that precipitation disaster we jumped to a lack of precipitation, with below-average amounts from April through to July (and counting). For much of the city, rainfall was 75 per cent below normal, according to Parks Canada. The long-term average for July is around 99.5 mm of rain. Some areas received as little as 12.6 mm. This led to heart-breaking conditions for local farmers. By mid-August the Kawartha Region Conservation Authority would call on residents to reduce their water consumption by 10 per cent.

And that drought led to yet another problem: two provincially classed forest fires, with more than 60 hectares of forest on fire at its zenith.

The city has yet to announce the municipal costs of the ice storm, however, we can expect it to be in the millions.

It will probably be a couple months before the costs of the forest fires are in.

Paying the climate-change piper is not just some abstract thought here in Kawartha Lakes. These weather events are — and will — cost us large, both at the public and private level. And let me be unequivocal: severe weather events will be more frequent because of human-caused climate change, negatively affecting our health and standard of living.

The idea that climate change will lead to increased costs for us is not new.

Government and private forecasts have predicted increased food, goods, insurance and health costs for Canadians with reduced GDP for years and the province’s independent Financial Accountability Office predicts a 16 per cent increase in municipal infrastructure costs due directly to climate change.

Although this city was one of the hardest hit by the storm, we were sadly not among the 50 municipalities to receive an Ice Storm Recovery Grant of $10,000 (that’s not a typo) from Hydro One. With the city into its budget consultation process, hopefully some will advocate for more climate-change cost line items. Taking the steps as per our aspirational Healthy Environment Plan might reduce how much climate change will cost us. But some of those ideas require investment.

Without bold action, we might be like the homeowner who can’t afford to fix the problem because of the mounting repair costs.

In loving memory

Alan Frank Gregory March 26, 1926 - June 19, 2025

Alan Frank Gregory (Al) passed away peacefully in Lindsay on June 19, 2025, at the age of 99. Born in Lindsay on March 26, 1926, Alan and his older brother Donald were raised by loving parents Marie (nee Guillet) and Frank Gregory. Alan attended Alexandra Public School and Lindsay Collegiate Institute.

While the Great Depression significantly impacted the family’s economic prospects, Alan’s parents made sacrifices to enable the children to build a better life. Passing his Upper School Examinations with first class honours, Al was accepted into Chemical Engineering at the University of Toronto. However, an increasing desire to focus on research led Al to re-orient his academic studies to Geological Sciences. Successful in both academics (Coleman Gold Medal and Victoria College’s Regent’s Gold Medal in Geological Sciences) and athletics (Canadian indoor One Mile Open relay record), the University of Wisconsin awarded Alan a University Fellowship in support of graduate studies in the Department of Geology and Geophysics.

Alan’s choice of a career in geology led him to the remote forests of northern Saskatchewan in search of work. He found so much more.

Al and Dorothy (nee Lorraine) were married in Uranium City, Saskatchewan on September 16th, 1953, in the log cabin of her parents. Al, together with “Dottie”, lived and worked in Canada’s north, started a family and

completed a PhD. At the age of 31 Al joined the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa. He was an important member of the team that created the Canadian Centre for Remote Sensing, laying a foundation for development of technologies now at the forefront of climate change research. After a decade at the Survey, Al spent three years teaching at Carleton University before establishing Gregory Geosciences Ltd.in 1969.

This was a most productive time for Al, he was active as a diplomatic scientist on UN committees and engaging with NASA to further develop the capacities of remote sensing for geological and environmental purposes. His work with the UN led to consultations in Nigeria and Russia.

He developed a machine, the ProCom-2, that was particularly effective in supporting developing countries in the mapping of their mineral deposits.

Civic responsibility was important to both Al and Dottie. Al’s outlet was Rotary International where he distinguished himself as a Paul Harris fellow. Following retirement in 1990, Al and Dottie moved to Peterborough, engaging in genealogy

investigations that resulted in joyful trips and journals as well as keeping up with their sons and their families in the United States (Gordon) and Belgium (Douglas). Summer holidays were spent invariably at Dottie’s family cottage in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts. Pico Beach continues to be a touchstone for the Gregory family to maintain close ties with Dottie’s extended family.

Pre-deceased by his beloved wife Dottie in 2015, Alan is survived by his children, Gordon (Debra), Douglas (Shelley) and his three grandchildren, Erin (Tyler), Emma and Daniel (Irene) who were the lights of his life.

A celebration of life will be held at the Mackey Funeral Home, 33 Peel Street, Lindsay, Ontario Canada on 16 September 2025 on what would have been Alan and Dorothy’s 73rd anniversary. Alan and Dorothy’s ashes will be interred in Riverside Cemetery.

NICOLE VOLPE moved to Lindsay from Toronto in May 2025.

Lindsay Advocate: Why did you choose to move here?

NICOLE VOLPE: I wanted to leave Toronto my whole life – the city wasn’t for me. But choosing a place to move to is hard when you don’t know many folks outside of where you live! It’s nerve wracking moving somewhere blind. I love nature, fishing, gardening, and I had met my partner in Muskoka a few years back, and his hometown is Lindsay. So, after three years of dating and visiting Lindsay often, we officially made the decision for me to move in with him, and I couldn’t be happier about the move.

I’ve been tattooing out of the city for the last few years, so moving to a new town and rebuilding clientele has made me nervous, but since starting work at Iron Will Tattoos, I’ve been blessed to have so many people wanting to get work done by me so far. I’m excited about my future here and being welcomed into the community.

Lindsay Advocate: What is your favourite thing about Kawartha Lakes so far?

NICOLE VOLPE: My all-time favourite thing is being in nature and on the water. Being on boats, canoeing, fishing, at the cottage, and hiking the trails around here. I’m always hunting for cool bugs, bones, and plants. So, I’ll be frequenting Ken Reid often. Being in nature is the best inspiration for any designs I’m working on for clients. I adore doing designs of flowers, plants, animals, bugs, absolutely anything in nature.

Lindsay Advocate: What are your favourite local restaurants or shops?

NICOLE VOLPE: I’m not big on going out much for food, but so far in town I’ve tried Masala Kraft a few times and I’ve loved everything I’ve tried so far, as well as enjoying the pizzas at Pie Eyed Monk. I’m also so excited that there’s a drive-in movie theatre here. And of course, Iron Will tattoo for all your tattoo needs.

Lindsay Advocate: What do you think is missing from Kawartha Lakes?

NICOLE VOLPE: I wish there were more patios with views to enjoy the water here. I think the only one is at the Legion.

Nothing beats a patio next to water enjoying a nice meal and drink. I hope to see more entertainment in the future too, like live music and community events!

Lindsay Advocate: How were you involved in your previous community and how might you like to get involved in Kawartha Lakes?

NICOLE VOLPE: Where I previously lived, I volunteered for a few organizations, involving art, cancer research charities and fostering kittens when I previously worked in vet med.

Since settling into the town, I haven’t had a moment to start looking for volunteer opportunities, but I would love to see what options there are to assist with any of the conservation areas or community gardens, if there are any.
