RIDING WAVES AND DUNES The professor’s interest in marine life is not limited to diving deep into the Red Sea for research purposes. Kosel is passionate about riding waves and seeks the thrill and joy of extreme sporting, such as kite-surfing. According to Kosel, “The most attractive feature of kitesurfing is probably the ability to jump by flying the kite in a certain way.” Consequently, he started kite-surfing 12 years ago while studying for his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Stellenbosch, in South Africa. Along with kite-surfing, he enjoys motorbike riding, hiking, and rock climbing. Ultimately, it is evident that Kosel is infatuated with the outdoors and draws his inspiration from the infinite source that is nature. Joining a local group of riders from KAUST, Kosel first started riding motorbikes nine years ago while in Saudi Arabia. He described the group as “very strong social interactions
creating something like a second family.” Going in groups is vital for safety, and they may consist of two to 10 riders per outing. Kosel specifically enjoys off-roading in the desert because of its vastness and the endless possibilities of discovering unique hidden spots. Due to its prohibition in most of the countries of the world, off-roading is legal and widely enjoyed in the Kingdom. The beauty of indulging in such highperformance activities is found in teasing the possibility of imminent danger with exhilaration. Such adrenaline-filled experiences feed and enlighten the overworked psyche, leaving it rejuvenated. As a result, these activities have provided Kosel with an abundance of meaningful friendships and a fresher outlook. Along with that, his wife has found her joy in similar activities, which makes Kosel even luckier.
