This month, KAUST made a major announcement. Dr. Tony Chan will join the University as the third president of KAUST. He will assume office on September 1 after nearly a decade as president of The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology. Chan has been a close partner of KAUST since 2007, and all of KAUST is looking forward to him joining the community.

At KAUST, mentorship results not only in the development of human talent but also in patentable technologies and startups.

That’s why, in this month’s edition of The Beacon, we’re featuring stories that highlight how the University is fostering the development of tomorrow’s leaders.

A team of KAUST and external researchers are field testing a solution to halve the amount of water needed to grow conventional crops.

The Core Labs recently established Centers of Excellence in magnetic resonance and optical microscopy to ensure that researchers and students continue to have unparalleled access to the world’s best equipment and expertise.

Every year since 2009, the University has hosted the National Academic Talent Development Program (NATDP), which prepares teaching assistants and lecturers for professorship in Saudi universities.

The program, in close consultation with Saudi institutions, has admitted over 100 students from 20 universities.

The fifth annual KAUST Saudi Leadership Program (KSLP), in collaboration with the Haas School of Business from UC Berkeley, also brought 25 female Saudi academics in leadership positions from around Saudi Arabia to campus to enhance their self-development and build strategic professional growth networks.

STEAM Innovation Challenge – April 12 to 14 KAUST Innovation & Economic Development’s Entrepreneurship Center hosted the STEAM Innovation Challenge in partnership with Northrop Grumman. The intensive event focused on solving challenging global issues using ideation and design thinking and was open to KAUST students and postdoctoral fellows. Participants formed teams with other students from KAUST and 14 universities across the Kingdom.

Chromatin Meets Epigenetics: From Organization to Function – April 25 to 27 As part of the KAUST Environmental Epigenetics Program (KEEP), the Chromatin Biochemistry Laboratory held the Chromatin Meets Epigenetics: From Organization to Function symposium.

Musical Celebrations Concert – May 14 KAUST Sensor Initiative – May 8 The KAUST Sensor Initiative has been running since 2015 and is a unique opportunity that came directly from the office of Jean Frechét, KAUST senior vice president for research, innovation and economic development. It involves multiple KAUST investigators and 13 international experts working on five different projects over the areas of atmosphere, subsurface, marine, chemistry and health. The interdisciplinary meetings that take place annually aim to transform sensor technologies, explore novel applications, create a global group of sensor pioneers and mentor a new generation of sensor experts in the Kingdom and the world.

Nawaf Alghamdi KAUST student awarded grant from KACST

Nawaf Alghamdi, an M.S./Ph.D. student based in the Clean Combustion Research Center (CCRC), has become one of the first KAUST graduate students to be awarded a Grants Program for Universities and Research Centers (GPURC) grant from King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST). Alghamdi was awarded the grant for his work entitled “Upgrading LowGrade Feedstocks Using Catalytic Pyrolysis” and will receive support from KACST for two years to work on his Ph.D. research at KAUST. GPURC is a is a long-term strategic investment aimed at devel6

oping the scientific skills needed among outstanding graduate students to boost Saudi Arabia’s position among leading countries in the fields of science, technology and innovation. Alghamdi, who is supervised by KAUST Professor Mani Sarathy, submitted his successful proposal for the grant in July of 2017.

“KACST looked at all proposals and selected the ones with the highest research quality potential. I knew about the opportunity through my adviser, who had been informed about it by KAUST,” Alghamdi said.

Through skills development with selected graduate students, GPURC aims to develop a support ecosystem which enables students to conduct world-class research. The program has been adopted as one of KACST’s initiatives in the National Transformation Program 2020.

“The KACST GPURC grants are meant to financially encourage graduate students in the Kingdom to pursue research with minimal obstacles. The idea is to elevate the level of research in Saudi Arabia, which is fantastic,” Alghamdi enthused.

Jysoo Lee Lee chosen for top HPCwire list

Jysoo Lee, the facilities director of the KAUST Research Computing Core Labs, has been named one of HPCwire’s “People to Watch 2018.”

Before coming to KAUST, Lee served as the director of the supercomputing center at Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information. He also served as the founding director general of the National Institute of Supercomputing and Networking in Korea.

“Jysoo has brought a wealth of expertise and creative energy to our supercomputing research

efforts,”said Justin Mynar, associate vice president for research and executive director of the KAUST Core Labs. “His work on outreach—particularly in the Kingdom—has had an immediate and positive impact.”

Under Lee’s leadership, the KAUST Research Computing Core Lab has broken two world records in partnership with Saudi Aramco—the world’s first trillion-cell reservoir simulation and the largest scale simulation of the engineering application. Lee has also led numerous national initiatives within his home

country, such as the National Energy Grid of South Korea and the Korean National e-Science Project.

“KAUST has assembled an outstanding team of experts, especially in the area of computational science. And the University has been able to attract world-class support staff with deep expertise in scientific computing,” Lee said.

“With the country advancing within the Saudi Vision 2030, I can only see more opportunities [for the Core Labs]. It is an exciting time to be here in Saudi Arabia,” he noted.

KAUST appoints third president KAUST has appointed Dr. Tony Chan as its third president. He will assume office on September 1, and he joins KAUST after nearly a decade as president of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).

KAUST Board Chairman H.E. Khalid Al-Falih said of the appointment, “We are delighted to welcome Dr. Chan as the next president of KAUST. His outstanding record as a leader in higher education and innovation will help us accomplish our ambitious goals in this important time of national transformation. With Dr. Chan’s leadership, I am confident that KAUST will be well-positioned to contribute in a meaningful way to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia achieving its Vision 2030 objectives, which are aimed at addressing global challenges and the betterment of humanity as well as national challenges.”

“Leading an institution like KAUST is a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity, and I look forward to playing a role in not only the next chapter of the University but in the new era of innovation for Saudi Arabia,” said Chan. “My deep history with KAUST and in higher education has allowed me to see firsthand the significant way the University has influenced the global research agenda, and I believe we are only at the beginning of a bright future.”

Chan has been a close partner of KAUST since 2007, when he hosted the founding team of the University for meetings in Washington, D.C., as assistant director of the U.S. National Science Foundation. He has been a member of the KAUST Board of Trustees since 2011. While president of HKUST, he hosted the Board of Trustees for a meeting in Hong Kong.

During his tenure at HKUST, Chan has driven major advancements, including enhancing the university’s global visibility and reputation; increasing international recruitment and exchange; nearly 8

tripling the number of endowed professorships; and championing the use of new technology in education, including placing HKUST as the first Asian university to offer Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs). Under Chan’s leadership, HKUST has become widely known as one of the leading universities in the world, rapidly increasing its global and regional rankings to 30th in the QS World’s Top 1000 Universities, 12th in Global University Employability Ranking and 2nd in the Times Higher Education Top Young University Rankings.

Before joining HKUST, Chan was the assistant director of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate at the U.S. National Science Foundation and the dean of physical sciences at UCLA. Chan’s professional field is computational mathematics, with his interests including image processing, computer vision, physical circuit design and computational brain mapping. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and is a fellow of AAAS, IEEE and SIAM. He has mentored over 35 Ph.D. students and 25 postdoctoral fellows. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in engineering from Caltech and his Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University.

In liquid form, it makes our home planet unique in all of the known universe. It is the most abundant compound in the universe, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), as it is made up of hydrogen and oxygen, the first and third most abundant elements, respectively. Yet surprisingly, there is no unified model to explain the behavior of water from the macro to the atomic level.

“You wake up in the morning and you drink water, you shower, you swim, it rains, you water your plants. Water is all around us—it is on us, it is in the clouds, it is in the air, and yet it turns out we don’t really understand it,” said KAUST Assistant Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering Himanshu Mishra.

Mishra is fascinated by water, and the research center to which he belongs is the perfect environment for scientists with a passion for both fundamental knowledge and applied solutions.

Mishra is at the leading edge of academics who seek to understand the water’s edge—quite literally the place where the last water molecules sit and something else begins.

“The top slice of water, the part that is touching air—is it slightly acidic or slightly basic? Or should it be neutral? That, believe it or not, has been a massively controversial issue over the last 20 years. If you go to some of these conferences, you might want to wear a helmet—it gets nasty,” he continued.

Mishra speaks as though water molecules are living, breathing beings, each with a will of his or

her own and yet a loyalty to the crowd—the image of water molecules as minions kept coming to mind as he spoke.

“The molecules at the surface are slightly frustrated. Why are they frustrated? Because their bonding network is kind of broken.

And if on the other side, if it is a material that dislikes water, or if it does not like water nearly as much as water likes itself, then this frustration leads to an enhancement of energy on the surface, which is known as the surface tension of water,” he said. “They don’t want to increase their surface area because that will lead to an excess of energy, and water doesn’t like that.”

Mishra wants to use this tension to make agriculture much more water efficient, to save energy and to save the world’s oceans from the mountains of plastic pollution humanity generates at an alarming rate. It’s a massive undertaking—one that Mishra proposes to solve using a deceptively simple set of concepts born of a chance bit of information he learned from a colleague.

“The biggest consumer of freshwater in the world is agriculture—I learned this from a colleague here at KAUST,” Mishra said. “I thought it would be some industry, I thought it would be some human consumption purposes, etc. But it’s not, it is agriculture. So I thought, ‘If you want to make a big dent in water security, you can just save 5 percent of the water from agriculture. That is a huge benefit.’”► 11

Thus began a thought experiment about ways to save water in the agricultural sector in arid environments such as the Arabian peninsula using cheap and readily accessible materials. Mishra and KAUST Ph.D. student Adair Gallo Junior developed a radical solution— superhydrophobic sand.

“There is a lot of sand here. Since they have large petroleum reserves, wax, a byproduct of oil refining, must also be very abundant. So what if we take sand, which is free, and put a nanoscale coating of wax on it?” he asked.

Hydrophobicity is the physical property of a molecule that, due to its non-polar nature, prefers to attach to similar neutral molecules in the presence of liquid water. Anyone who has poured water into an oily frying pan, for example, has seen this phenomenon in action.

The oil molecules do not bind with the water and the two liquids stay clearly separated.

Over the last two years, Gallo and a team of assistants have been methodically planting and tracking the growth, water consumption and harvest output of a range of plants. They started work in 2015 in the KAUST greenhouse in collaboration with Professor Mark Tester and, after one planting cycle, quickly moved to testing in farmland near the village of Hada ash Sham about 20 12

kilometers outside of Jeddah in collaboration with Professor Magdi Mousa (KAU, Jeddah) and Associate Professor Matthew McCabe (KAUST).

freshwater on agriculture. The amounts get into the thousands of cubic kilometers, which is a very large amount of water,” Mishra said.

Gallo and Mishra have chosen a range of crops that include barley and tomatoes. The team has tested both increasing yield while keeping water consumption constant and reducing water consumption while keeping yield constant. Their early findings suggest a near doubling of yield while holding water consumption constant. Testing to reduce consumption of water is ongoing.

The team sees the superhydrophobic sand not only as a good solution but also as a cheap and accessible one for farmers in semi-arid and arid regions of the world.

“In the early stages, when the soil is exposed, you lose a lot of water through direct evaporation from the soil. That is just wasted water because it is not being used by the plant to grow or to control its temperature,” Gallo said.

“If you are a small-scale farmer, you might be better off using this superhydrophobic sand that you can just apply with your hands,” Mishra said.

“It has that advantage.”

‘Super Women in Science’ returns

For the second year in a row, the University and The KAUST School (TKS), with the support of the Biological and Environment Science and Engineering Division (BESE), put in a joint effort to organize “Promoting Super Women in Science.” On February 17, 79 girls from the fourth to eighth grade at TKS gathered at the University Library for a oneday science extravaganza.

The event was a unique opportunity to encourage and inspire girls to pursue education in science, technology, engineering and/or math (the STEM fields) and to facilitate relationships with professional women in these scientific disciplines. “Promoting Super

“Promoting Super Women in Science” strives to abolish negative and fearful attitudes about math and science, empowering young women in both their femininity and intellect.

There was a special vibe in the University Library as the girls arrived, took their seats and chatted with their schoolmates about the exciting day of events.

Elementary school teacher Deanna Mydland and KAUST Assistant Professor of Bioscience Jasmeen Merzaban greeted the girls and thanked them for giving up their Saturday for the sake of science.

“If you are passionate about science, you should believe

in yourself and find the support of a mentor to encourage and motivate you to push your limits,” Merzaban said.

She also mentioned that while 66 percent of fourth grade girls show interest in science, this inevitably decreases as women move into higher level positions in STEM. “I hope the stories from superwomen Niveen Khashab, Charlotte Hauser and Ikram Blilou will be a source of inspiration and might even lead you to pursue a bright career in STEM,” Merzaban told the girls.

A love story of science The first superwoman to tell the young girls her story was Associate Professor Niveen Khashab, winner of the prestigious L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award in the field of physical science for her research in organic chemistry.

Khashab came a long way before becoming the woman she is today—both of her parents dropped out of high school and she lived in a crowded house, where she took care of her grandmother.

“If you are passionate about science, go down that road.

What do you do when you wake up? You breathe science.

Science is in the water you drink, in your toothpaste, in the soap you use in the shower, in the cereal you have for breakfast—you cannot avoid it,” Khashab said.

the interface between chemistry, biomedicine, bioengineering and nanotechnology. Inspired by famous scientist Marie Curie at a young age, she became fascinated by science. As her passion grew and her skills and knowledge sharpened, she wanted to combine disciplines and find cures for diseases.

“I want to work with nanotechnologies to find cures for diseases,” Abbie from grade eight said after the lecture.

Hauser’s research on Alzheimer’s disease and her work on peptides made her famous in her field. She mentioned that to become who she is today, she can only provide some ingredients of the recipe: self-confidence, passion and perseverance.►

An amazing opportunity As a child, she wondered how the pills her grandmother took made her feel better. This was the start of a love story with science.

For the love of plants Superwoman Ikram Blilou, KAUST associate professor of plant developmental biology, runs a research group that aims to understand the molecular mechanisms of growth and defense in plants and study their defense mechanisms under stress conditions. Her team also intends to understand adaptive strategies used by desert plants to survive in hostile conditions, and uses date palms as a model.

Brought up in Tangier, Morocco, Blilou wanted to become an animal scientist until she had to dissect a mouse in biology class.

After that, she decided to study plants instead, moving to Spain to complete her Ph.D. and then to Utrecht in the Netherlands to be a postdoctoral fellow. For Blilou, studying abroad was an eyeopening experience.

“You make a new family and get to know people from all around the world. You also learn to become independent, and the city you live in becomes your second home,” she said.

The support and encouragement she had from her family was very important to her—it helped her push boundaries and broaden her vision of the world. Blilou shared some useful tips she learned along the way with the young girls.

“Have faith in yourself, ask the right questions to have a strong hypothesis, enjoy the small victories, work hard—and most of all, have fun experimenting!” she said.

Getting their hands on science In the afternoon, the girls participated in hands-on sessions with KAUST researchers and postdoctoral fellows who showcased research being done at the University. The girls took part in experiments, manipulating laboratory equipment, micro sensors, simulating processes and results with pipettes and Petri dishes in hand.

The most popular workshop was undoubtedly the “slime workshop” with TKS student Sofia Barhoumi, grade three, and

Dr. Samah Zeineb Gadhoum, an instructor in the Molecular and Cellular Biology Lab. With their hands in the viscous mixture, the schoolgirls learned about nonNewtonian fluids.

“I like mixing stuff. I would like to find a cure for rare diseases,” Ines from grade five noted.

The Red Sea Research Center (RSRC) provided an opportunity to have a closer look at fish samples and skeletons, while the TKS students also experimented with changing a fluid to a solid state by adding chemicals to a solution. The workshops were a great way to spark a passion for science.

This might mean field trips to labs or research centers or bringing in local experts to classrooms to share their knowledge and experiences with the hopes of inspiring a new generation of scientists,” he added.

“Promoting ‘Super Women in Science’ is a very important initiative that the BESE division supports with enthusiasm. There is a need for a continuous and sustained encouragement for young girls to enter science and technology studies and careers. In order to give confidence to those girls who are hesitating, examples of successful women scientists are of prime importance. My personal thanks go to Jasmeen, Charlotte, Niveen and Ikram for taking the time and providing inspiring examples of successful women scientists,” said BESE Dean Pierre Magistretti.

“My girls had a wonderful experienced and came full of knowledge and curiosity. Thank you for your efforts—we are lucky to have many women in the University to be great examples to our young ones,” said the mother of a TKS student at the event.

“The event was such an amazing opportunity for the girls to meet so many scientists, hear their stories and see their work. My daughters were inspired,” another mother of a TKS student attending the activities noted.

“My role model is my mom, and I go sometimes to her lab to learn about her research. I also want to be a scientist because science is fun and it helps people, animals and plants,” said sixth grade student Karen.

Career planning for tomorrow’s faculty Over one-quarter of researchers at KAUST, including faculty members and students, are postdoctoral fellows. Having finished their Ph.D.s, postdocs come to KAUST for additional training as they gain independence as scientists and leaders in their chosen fields. Once at KAUST, they quickly learn that there is more to landing an academic or leadership position than publishing academic papers.

To move to the next level, they need to know how to create a professional identity, manage team dynamics, lead a group, and establish effective time management skills for themselves and others. To help postdocs learn these skills, faculty members in the Plant Science Program in the University’s Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering Division (BESE) sponsored a Research Leadership Development Program for Early Career Researchers in Plant Sciences.

The program was supported by Professor Pierre Magistretti, dean of BESE, and two groups, the Postdoc and Researcher Support Program and the Office of Sponsored Research, under the direction of Distinguished Professor Jean M.J. Fréchet, senior vice president for research, innovation and economic development at KAUST. Facilitated by Dr. Paul Dalby, an executive consultant, plant scientist and former faculty member from Australia, the interactive and intensive two-day workshop attracted 24 early career researchers who learned how to craft successful grant proposals, create selfawareness, build leadership skills, develop career plans and formulate research and teaching statements.

The workshop covered the important aspects of the transition phase from a researcher to a program leader. In creating their professional identities, the postdocs focused on marketing tools for ambitious scientists, such as effective promotion of self by acknowledging contributions of individual team members and the role of social media in promoting science.

On the second day of the workshop, postdocs took a crash course on project management, validation of program logic, business and project planning and budget development and management.

A central part of the workshop was discussing how to attract money from various sources, such as grants, government and industry. Finally, the postdocs drafted their own career strategy plans.

“This program gave me confidence to move into the next stage of my career as an assistant professor,” said Dr. Sandra Schmöckel, a postdoctoral fellow in KAUST Professor Mark Tester’s Salt Lab. “I plan to be ready to submit my first grant proposal when I start my new job.”

Skills developed during this workshop will be further honed in follow-up events supported by the Postdoc and Researcher Support team and the Office of Sponsored Research. The postdocs will participate in programs to help them prepare a job application for a faculty position, attend an interview with a faculty panel and write a proposal for research funding.

New partnerships at KAUST The University recently launched two new on campus Centers of Excellence, one with the Bruker Corporation and the second with Leica Microsystems.

KAUST and the Bruker Corporation signed a Memorandum of Understanding, officially launching the KAUST–Bruker Center of Excellence (CoE) in Magnetic Resonance. The agreement marks the culmination of a long and mutually beneficial association between the two organizations.

“The KAUST-Bruker CoE offers all KAUST users the exceptional opportunity to work with technologies at the very front line of innovation; adapting them to suit their specific research needs. This CoE will also serve as a launchpad for new technologies, providing the region with 20

an international demonstration and training site,” said Jean M.J. Fréchet, senior vice president for research, innovation and economic development at KAUST. “Bruker’s philosophy of relentless innovation and our long track record in developing leading analytical instrumentation and enabling scientific tools is based on close relationships with our customers,” said Dr. Frank Laukien, president and CEO of Bruker Corporation. “Our long and fruitful relationship with KAUST and its world-class researchers is an example of how a symbiotic vendor-customer relationship leads to better instruments and scientific outcomes.”

On March 12, KAUST and Leica Microsystems inaugurated a new Center of Excellence (CoE) for Optical Microscopy . With the new center, KAUST and Leica Microsystems embark on a long-term partnership in cutting-edge life science research with the objective of encouraging new discoveries.

In 2008, the KAUST Gifted Student Program (KGSP) was created with an aim of fostering a pool of pioneering Saudi Arabian scholars within the scientific and technological fields whose skills and perspectives would add to the intellectual and cultural fabric of both the University and the Kingdom.

As Saudi Arabia’s premiere undergraduate scholarship, the KGSP provides unsurpassed structure, guidance and opportunity to the Kingdom’s most talented youth as they pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) bachelor’s degrees at leading universities in the United States.

Since the scholarship’s founding in 2008, over 60 KGSP students have joined M.S. or Ph.D. programs at KAUST—a number due to significantly increase in coming years as the over 450 current KGSP undergraduates complete their studies at institutions like MIT, Stanford, Purdue, Columbia and the University of California, Berkeley.

The KGSP is administered through the University’s department of Saudi Affairs.

Investing in national talent The University recently held the third symposium of its National Academic Talent Development Program (NATDP), bringing together 140 institutional leaders, faculty and prospective students from 18 Saudi universities for a day that focused on strengthening research and education for the Kingdom through partnerships with KAUST. With these partnerships, NATDP is cultivating the next generation of talented researchers and faculty members for Saudi Arabian institutions. The program brings teaching assistants and lecturers to KAUST who are sponsored by their home universities for the advanced degrees, training and development required to become impactful future faculty. Following their time at KAUST, members of the program return to their home institutions, where they embark on new careers as professors.

“The NATDP is one of the University’s most important contributions to building a national scientific infrastructure able to accommodate and drive the Kingdom’s transformation priorities,” said Najah Ashry, vice president of Saudi Affairs, which administers the program. “We work with more than half of the universities in Saudi Arabia to significantly enhance the nation’s research and education capacity by addressing the vital need for the development and training of this next generation of Saudi faculty.”

Each year, guests of the symposium visit campus to learn about the University’s latest breakthroughs in research; contributions to national economic and talent development; and ongoing opportunities for students seeking doctorate degrees and postdoctoral fellowships.

The symposium also highlighted the many research partnerships KAUST has with academia and industry throughout the Kingdom and internationally. These provide unprecedented learning and collaboration opportunities for prospective students who want to be a part of the strategic research making a difference in the country. Guests also heard from KAUST leadership about the University’s mission to invest in Saudi talent beyond the lab and classroom, including through comprehensive entrepreneurship and innovation support.

Guests also met with current KAUST students to hear about their work, gain insight into life at the University and learn about the ways to flourish as a worldclass researcher. For prospective new students and their faculty and institutional leaders, a special session was presented with advice on beginning the KAUST journey. This included a discussion about KAUST

admissions and an in-depth exploration of the University’s three academic divisions and fields of study available to students.

A highlight of the event was a selection of success stories of NATDP program alumni who are now at institutions throughout the country contributing as faculty and academic leaders.

Dalal Alezi, a KAUST alumna of the program, gave a keynote address about her experience at KAUST, the doors it opened for her professionally and personally and how her academic journey with the University has allowed her create impact in her new role as an assistant professor of chemistry at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah.

“I thank KAUST for helping me find my passion,” Alezi said in her closing remarks. “We have been given all the tools to succeed.”

Tailor-made training for future leaders KAUST held the fifth annual KAUST Saudi Leadership Program (KSLP)—a training program for leaders and academics at Saudi universities—in collaboration with the Haas School of Business of the University of California, Berkeley. KSLP aims to develop the capabilities of Saudi leaders, improve the working environment of national academic institutions, build high-level strategic professional networks and enhance self-development.

The 2018 edition of KSLP included workshops and a six-day training course for 25 Saudi female academics in leadership and deanship positions from around the Kingdom. The list of invitees included academics from Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, King Saud University, Al-Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University and King Abdulaziz University.

requirements and challenges of this time. Just like the other participants who have gone through the previous four sessions, they are given a solid foundation to help them hold important positions in a number of Saudi universities.

KAUST created a strategic partnership last year with the University of California, Berkeley to provide bespoke trainings for female leaders from Saudi universities.

Berkeley faculty members went to great lengths to understand each participant through extensive questionnaires and interviews before the program got underway.

KSLP 2018 included two main areas of interest. Participants reviewed the latest scientific literature related to strategic planning, analysis and communication;

managing teams; and drawing road maps for effective executive leadership. Participants also enjoyed an interactive lecture series offered by the senior leadership of KAUST. Senior members of the University’s administrative and academic leadership spoke on the professional and technical aspects of leadership in a large, multicultural academic institution.

The relationship between KAUST and the participants continues after the end of the six days, as the university opens its doors to the program graduates to attend enrichment programs and various academic events held by the university throughout the year.

Specialized periodic meetings are held in order to follow up their progress and development in their different fields and provide space for sharing their success stories.

My KSA: Between a rock and an art space During the working week, Ivan Gromicho, a scientific illustrator in the University’s Office of Research Publication Services (RPS) team, works hard to bring the research findings and discoveries of KAUST faculty from fixed numbers and equations into vivid pictorial form for inclusion in scientific journals. Working side-byside with KAUST faculty members, he produces illustrations for their publications in international scientific journals such as Cell, Nature, Science and ACS.

it. You might look at a wall and think you can climb it, and then you go and realize you must train more. It humbles you; it makes you feel small and vulnerable, so it teaches you how to deal with adversity. When you finally manage to climb that project you had train hours and hours for—it’s an amazing feeling. The infinite variety of movements, sequences and routes is also one thing that fascinates me—you just want more and more,” Gromicho enthused.

Reaching the summit Gromicho, who joined KAUST in September 2014, is trained to understand complex scientific ideas and turn them into images that are easy to comprehend. As part of the three-person RPS team, Gromicho and his colleagues routinely display the power and beauty of when science and art combine.

The Portuguese native, who was born 50 kilometers north of the capital Lisbon in the Atlantic-facing city of Torres Vedras, credits his current profession and skills with his genetic lineage.

“My mother is a teacher, my father is a sculptor and painter and my grandma was a painter. My uncles are graphic designers and photographers, so it was easy to get infected by the artistic spirit from an early age,” he said.

Along with his passion for merging science and art, Gromicho has another passion—rock climbing—which he has been able to nourish during his time in the Kingdom. When he’s not in the office, Gromicho can often be found in a remote part of the Kingdom scaling the natural rock formations or indoor rock walls Saudi Arabia has to offer.

“I love the outdoors and being in nature—climbing puts you in your place and you can’t fake 28

During rock climbing, a climber’s strength, endurance, agility, balance and mental ability are tested in unison. Gromicho believes that to climb successfully, you need strength, balance, a focused mind, flexibility, coordination and technique.

“It’s a complete sport, and if you learn the basic safety techniques, the risks can be reduced to almost 100 percent. Rock climbing has been gaining popularity over the years, and recently it became an Olympic sport—in Tokyo 2020, we will see rock climbing in the Olympics. There are three disciplines: lead, bouldering and speed. Olympic climbers must be good at those three,” he emphasized.

Gromicho started his own rock climbing journey in 2001, and, like most climbers, he became addicted to the pursuit.

“After school and on the weekends I rapidly became dedicated to indoor training and outdoor climbs. I also freelanced many years doing rope access work: installing outdoor panels, doing maintenance of buildings, stunts for cinema and advertising, rescuing, etc. Then when I went to university, I started to study geology, and I became more focused on sports climbing, such as bouldering and lead,” he noted.

Exploring KSA The diverse landscape of Saudi Arabia offers an ideal playground for adventurers and outdoor sports enthusiasts. For those who are willing to test the limits of their minds and bodies, the country holds a wealth of opportunities. When he isn’t climbing, Gromicho spends his weekends running in the desert races organized by the Hejaz Ultra running group. The races can vary from 10K runs up to half and full marathons and 50-100K ultra trails.

He also enjoys camping in the Saudi wilderness, freediving, Muay Thai, Jiujitsu, cycling and exploring the coast’s many coral reefs.►

Upon joining KAUST, Gromicho found a group of local enthusiasts who shared a similar love for the outdoors and for exploring the vast expanses of the country.

“I found a group of Saudi climbers on social media and I contacted them and asked if I could join some of their activities. Our group is about 10 climbers from KAUST and 10 from Jeddah. We go out and explore many places, pinpointing areas on Google Maps and constantly searching for new areas,” he noted.

go camping in the desert; or you can visit volcanoes and see wildlife,” he said. “We’ve seen frogs, lizards, snakes, wild monkeys, birds, goats and camels, and we know there are leopards and hyenas in another place we usually go. The locals we meet are always very friendly and curious when they see us climbing. They come and offer food and water and sometimes even try to climb.”

“One and a half years later, we are all really good friends and we have specific places where we go often to climb. Almost every week, the Jeddah members come to the KAUST rock climbing wall to train.

We train together as often as we can and then go to the desert on the weekends,” Gromicho added.

“Nature in Saudi Arabia is beautiful: at the coral reefs, you can swim with whale sharks and dolphins and practice water sports; you can

A continued emergence Although rock climbing in the Kingdom is still in its nascent stage, the public awareness of the activity

has increased in part thanks to the efforts of such famous local mountaineering luminaries such as Farouk Saad Hamad Al-Zuman, Prince Bandar bin Khalid bin Fahad Al Saud, Raha Moharrak and Yasmin Gahtani.

Al-Zuman became the first Saudi to surmount the 8,848 meters (or 29,029 ft) of Mount Everest in 2008; Four years later, Al Saud became only the second Saudi to scale Mt. Everest and the first Saudi to climb the world’s “Seven Summits”—the highest mountains on each of the seven continents. In 2013, Moharrak became the first Saudi female and youngest Arab to reach the summit of Everest. Gahtani, the first Saudi rock climbing instructor, recently joined the Saudi Climbing Federation and the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee as a board member, and is responsible for multiple projects to expand climbing in the Kingdom.

Gromicho believes that there is great potential in Saudi Arabia for rock climbing at the highest level and feels that many Saudis would like to follow in the footsteps of the country’s most famous climbers.

“The sport is at its very beginning here, but it’s happening very fast.

This country is beautiful and I’m nicely surprised every time we go outdoors to explore new areas.

I believe in the future, famous climbers will come to open new routes and climb on Saudi walls,” he concluded.

Klemens Katterbauer Kelemens Katterbauer joined KAUST in 2011 and obtained his Ph.D. in earth science and engineering four years later under the supervision of Professors Ibrahim Hoteit and Shuyu Sun. Prior to KAUST, he was enrolled at the University of Vienna, Austria, and is currently employed as a regional IT Infrastructure manager/business consultant at the furniture retailer XXX Lutz.

In his current role, Katterbauer is responsible for supply chain optimization and for IT infrastructure in the Eastern Europe, Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions.

“Collaborating with several colleagues around the world is a great experience and opportunity for me. While the work may not directly relate to the oil and gas industry, diversifying my skills and competencies is a great asset,” he said. “This highlights the University’s ability to generate highly versatile and skilled graduates who can succeed in different fields.”

“The facilities, funds and faculty advisors at the University were really extraordinary. I had several other opportunities to study for my Ph.D.—chiefly in the U.S. and Europe—but I decided to come to KAUST because I am pretty entrepreneurial and loved to be able to contribute and participate in a new and challenging endeavor,” he noted.

Katterbauer, whose long-term plan is to move into management and become a chief information officer or general manager at a multinational company, feels that if potential students like a challenge and want to be involved in a stimulating environment, then KAUST is the place for them.

“KAUST will help you to distinguish yourself in a competitive global environment,” he concluded.

Haleema A. Alamri Upon graduating from KAUST in late 2016, Ph.D. alumna Haleema Alamri joined Saudi Aramco as a research scientist at the Research and Development Center, where she was nominated to join the Ibn Khaldun Fellowship for Saudi Women at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a postdoctoral fellow. She embarked on a new journey, flying to Boston to spend a year working on cutting-edge scientific research in chemistry and polymer science.

The Ibn Khaldun Fellowship is offered to female scientists and engineers from Saudi Arabia who hold doctoral degrees and have demonstrated a high level of achievement. Fellows spend a year doing research at MIT in collaboration with their home organizations and other local universities with the supported of Saudi Aramco.

“My fellowship at MIT is an amazing opportunity that allows me to do something exceptional. I have incredible access to scientific resources, support and professional networks to pursue my career goals,” Alamri said.

“It was a great opportunity that allowed us to shed some light on how capable we are as Saudi female scientists and to be recognized as a catalyst of change that will help bring Saudi Vision 2030 to life,” Alamri noted.

The Saudi Aramco-sponsored alumna graduated from the University’s Physical Science and Engineering Division (PSE). She conducted her research in the Polymer Synthesis Laboratory at the KAUST Catalysis Center (KCC) under the supervision of Professor Nikos Hadjichristidis.

“Students receive many benefits from their experiences at KAUST, including the opportunity of acquiring skills and knowledge that supply successful professional training and intellectual growth,” she said.

During Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to MIT in March 2018, Alamri was nominated to participate as part of the second edition of the Innovation to Impact forum organized by KAUST.

There may be more common ground between science and art than meets the eye, as both science and art aim to understand the world around us.

As Sue Kershaw, events coordinator in the Office of the Arts, explained, “At KAUST, you can see evidence of a match between creativity and science.”

Wendy Keyes, head of the Office of the Arts, added, “Art is the left and the right sides of the brain working in tandem.”

The Office of the Arts was established in the early days of the University and it has seen program and participation growth with every passing year. One of the aims of the office is to provide opportunities for artists, musicians and poets to practice and share their craft outside of their day jobs and participate in Office of the Arts events. There is a range of levels and skill sets, from musicians picking up a long-forgotten instrument to high-level amateur players and professional artists as part of our community. Following the academic year, the office’s program boasts a full line up of concerts, exhibitions and special programs.

The KAUST Ensembles Concert is a highlight for musicians and the community alike. Ensembles takes place on a bi-annual basis and brings together the KAUST Orchestra, the Angklung Ensemble and the KAUST Chorus. Over 80 musicians representing a wide cross-section of the community, including The KAUST School (TKS) teachers, Gardens Secondary School (GSS) advanced students, University staff, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, rehearsed for seven weeks leading up to the concert. Emmalee Johnson, a music teacher at GSS, conducted the Orchestra at this semester’s concert.

“It is a great honor to work with a group of eager musicians,” Johnson noted.

For visual artists, the Artists of KAUST and Artists of KAUST Junior exhibitions are the pinnacle of the annual art calendar, giving community artists the chance to showcase their work at the two-week exhibitions held in the University Library and at the Harbor Library, respectively.

My University Ashley Rowell Ashley Rowell, a grade 1 teacher at The KAUST School (TKS), moved to the University from Durham, North Carolina, U.S., with her husband and dog in December 2015. 2018 marks her seventh year of teaching—before joining KAUST, she taught English for a nonprofit in Poland and taught school in the U.S. “My husband and I both lived abroad before and we loved it, so when we heard about KAUST, we thought coming to Saudi Arabia would be a fun way to work abroad again and have the chance to travel more easily,” she said.

Rowell is currently working on her master’s degree from the University of Virginia, and when not teaching, she enjoys playing softball, completing triathlons (she finished her first, an Ironman 70.3, in Bahrain in November 2017), reading and playing the piano.

“The lifestyle at KAUST lends itself to a nice work-life balance, so my husband and I have time to pursue things outside of work that make us more well-rounded people,” she noted. “I find the environment of KAUST amazing—being in a place with so many people from different places is a fun way to experience other cultures and learn a lot from people who aren’t exactly like me.”

‫أين تقرأ مجلة المنارة؟‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا‪.‬‬ ‫العلــم موجود فــي كل مكان‪ ،‬ومطبوعة المنارة‬ ‫يعشــق مجتمع جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫(كاوســت) متعدد الثقافات الســفر إلى مختلف أنحاء‬ ‫العالم ونشــر المعرفة من جامعتنا‪ .‬وترمز مطبوعة‬ ‫المنــارة إلى هذا النفــوذ العالمي‪ ،‬وتمثل الطموح بنقل‬ ‫أبحاث كاوســت إلى سائر أرجاء المعمورة‪.‬‬ ‫احتفاء بروح‬ ‫لذلك‪ ،‬تنظم الجامعة مســابقة تصوير‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تقاســم المعرفة‪ .‬التقط صورة لمجلة المنارة أو لنســخة‬ ‫من مطبوعة المنارة أثناء ســفرك خالل شــهري مايو‬ ‫ويونيــو المقبلين لتحصــل على فرصة عرضها في مجلة‬ ‫المنارة ومدونة العدســة وعلى حساب الجامعة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫علما أن الصور الفائزة ستحصل‬ ‫الرســمي على إنســتغرام‪،‬‬ ‫على جوائز‪.‬‬

‫جامعتي كاوست‬ ‫آشلي رويل‬ ‫انتقلت آشــلي رويل‪ ،‬معلمة الصف األول في مدرســة‬ ‫جامعــة الملك عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنية إلى الجامعة‬ ‫في ديســمبر ‪ ،2015‬قادمة مع زوجها من دورهام‬ ‫فــي والية نــورث كارولينا األمريكية‪ .‬يمثل العام ‪2018‬‬ ‫عامها الســابع في التدريس‪ ،‬فقبل انضمامها إلى‬ ‫الجامعــة كانت ّ‬ ‫تعلم اللغة اإلنجليزية في مؤسســة غير‬ ‫ربحيــة فــي بولندا وفي مدارس الواليات المتحدة‪.‬‬ ‫تقول آشــلي‪“ :‬كنت أعيش مع زوجي خارج البالد‪ ،‬وقد‬ ‫اســتمتعنا بذلك‪ ،‬لذا عندما ســمعنا عن جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنيــة‪ ،‬رأينا أن المجيء إلى المملكة‬ ‫العربية الســعودية ســيمثل مرة أخرى طريقة ممتعة‬ ‫للعمل في الخارج‪ ،‬وفرصة للســفر والترحال”‪.‬‬

‫ً‬ ‫حاليا على درجة الماجســتير من جامعة‬ ‫تعمل رويل‬ ‫فيرجينيا‪ .‬خارج أوقات العمل‪ ،‬تهوى ممارســة لعبة‬ ‫كرة البيســبول‪ ،‬وتســتكمل سباق الترايثلون وقد أنهت‬ ‫المرحلــة األولى فــي البحرين في نوفمبر ‪ 2017‬كما‬ ‫تهــوى المطالعة‪ ،‬والعزف على البيانو‪.‬‬ ‫ترى آشــلي أن “نمط الحياة في جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جيدا بين العمل والحياة‪ ،‬لذا‬ ‫للعلــوم والتقنيــة يتيح توازنـ ًـا‬ ‫فإن لدي أنا وزوجي الوقت لمتابعة أشــياء خارج العمل‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تجعلنــا أكثر اندماجا مــع محيطنا”‪ .‬وتضيف‪“ :‬أجد أن بيئة‬ ‫جامعــة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية مدهشــة كونها‬ ‫تجمعني بالعديد من األشــخاص القادمين من أماكن‬ ‫مختلفــة مــن العالم‪ ،‬ما يتيح لــي فرصة ممتعة للتعامل‬ ‫مع الثقافات األخرى وتعلم الكثير من أشــخاص من‬ ‫خلفيات متعددة”‪.‬‬

‫العليا وزمالء ما بعد الدكتوراه‪ .‬ويشــمل الحفل أوركســترا‬ ‫جامعــة الملك عبداهلل للعلــوم والتقنية وفرقة أنغكلونغ‬ ‫الموســيقية من التراث اإلندونيســي والحفالت الغنائية‪.‬‬ ‫ويخضع المشــاركون إلى فترة تدريب تصل إلى ســبعة‬ ‫أســابيع قبل مشاركتهم في فقرات الحفل‪.‬‬ ‫كمــا ينظم مكتب الفنــون مجموعة من المعارض الفنية‬ ‫بمشــاركة نخبة من الفنانين التشــكيليين من جامعة‬ ‫الملــك عبداهلل للعلــوم والتقنية‪ .‬ومن أبرز هذه المعارض‪،‬‬ ‫المعرض الســنوي للفنانين التشــكيليين في الجامعة‬ ‫الــذي يتيح لجميع أعضــاء مجتمع الجامعة فرصة عرض‬ ‫أعمالهــم الفنية لمدة أســبوعين في مكتبة الجامعة‬ ‫ومكتبة المرفأ‪.‬‬ ‫قالت إيمالي‪“ :‬شرف عظيم أن أعمل مع مجموعة‬ ‫موسيقيين شغوفين”‪.‬‬ ‫بالنسبة للفنانين البصريين‪ ،‬فإن معرض فناني جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪ ،‬ومعرض الفنانين الصغار‪،‬‬ ‫يمثالن ذروة الفعاليات الفنية التي تتيح للفنانين فرصة‬ ‫عرض أعمالهم في معارض تستمر أسبوعين‪ ،‬وتقام في‬ ‫مكتبة الجامعة وفي مكتبة المرفأ‪ ،‬على التوالي‪.‬‬

‫اإلبــداع هــو النقطة التي يتقاطــع فيها العلم مع الفن‪ .‬فمن‬ ‫خالل العقول المبدعة يســتطيع العلم والفن تفســير كل‬ ‫ما يحدث من حولنا في العالم‪ .‬وفي هذا الســياق‪ ،‬تقول‬ ‫ســو كيرشو‪ ،‬منســقة فعاليات مكتب الفنون في جامعة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫دليال على‬ ‫الملــك عبداهلل للعلــوم والتقنية‪“ :‬يمكنك أن ترى‬ ‫وجــود تطابــق بين اإلبداع والعلوم في كل مكان داخل حرم‬ ‫جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية “‪.‬‬ ‫أنشــئ مكتب الفنون في األيام األولى للجامعة وشــهد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كبيرا في عدد البرامج والمشــاركات في كل‬ ‫ارتفاعا‬ ‫عــام‪ .‬ويهدف المكتب إلى تمكين الفنانين التشــكيليين‬ ‫والموســيقيين والشــعراء في الجامعة من ممارسة‬ ‫مهاراتهم خارج فترات العمل اليومية والمشــاركة في‬ ‫فعاليــات مكتب الفنون المختلفــة وتعريف مجتمع الجامعة‬ ‫بإبداعاتهــم‪ .‬ويقوم مكتــب الفنون بتنظيم مجموعة‬ ‫كاملــة من الفعاليات الفنية طوال العام تشــمل الحفالت‬ ‫الموســيقية والغنائيــة والمعارض الفنية والبرامج الخاصة‪.‬‬ ‫ويشــارك في هذه الفعاليات العديد من أعضاء مجتمع‬ ‫الجامعــة الذين يمتلكون مهــارات وميول مختلفة من فنانين‬ ‫وموســيقيين هواة ومحترفين‪.‬‬ ‫ومــن أهم الفعاليــات الفنية في الجامعة هو الحفل‬ ‫الموســيقي لجامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية الذي‬ ‫يشــارك فيه ‪ 80‬موسـ ً‬ ‫ـيقيا يمثلون شريحة واسعة من طلبة‬ ‫ومعلمي مدارس الجامعة وموظفيها وطلبة الدراســات‬

‫حليمة العمري‬ ‫عقب تخرجها من جامعة الملك عبد اهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪،‬‬ ‫انضمت حليمة العمري إلى أرامكو السعودية كعالمة‬ ‫أبحاث في مركز األبحاث والتطوير‪ ،‬قبل أن ترشحها‬ ‫أرامكو لالنضمام إلى برنامج زمالة ابن خلدون في معهد‬ ‫ماساتشوستس للتقنية (‪ )MIT‬كزميلة ما بعد الدكتوراه‪.‬‬ ‫شرعت العمري في رحلة جديد حين سافرت إلى بوسطن‬ ‫للعمل على بحث علمي متطور في مجال الكيمياء وعلم‬ ‫البوليمرات لمدة عام كامل‪.‬‬ ‫تقول العمري‪“ :‬إن عملي في معهد ماساتشوستس‬ ‫للتقنية هو فرصة رائعة تتيح لي القيام بشيء استثنائي‬ ‫يمنحني القدرة على الوصول إلى الموارد العلمية والدعم‬ ‫والشبكات المهنية لتحقيق أهداف مسيرتي المهنية‪”.‬‬ ‫يتم تقديم منحة زمالة ابن خلدون للنساء السعوديات‬ ‫العالمات والمهندسات من المملكة العربية السعودية‬ ‫الحاصالت على درجة الدكتوراه وقد أظهروا مستوى عال‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عاما في إجراء األبحاث في‬ ‫من اإلنجاز‪ .‬يقضي الزمالء‬ ‫معهد ماساتشوستس للتقنية بالتعاون مع منظماتهم‬ ‫المحلية والجامعات المحلية األخرى بدعم من شركة‬ ‫أرامكو السعودية‪.‬‬ ‫وتضيف العمري‪ “ :‬أتاحت لي الزمالة الفرصة لبناء شبكة من‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فضال عن بناء دائرة‬ ‫األقران في المجال العلمي والمهني‪،‬‬ ‫اجتماعية لألنشطة غير العملية”‪.‬‬

‫وخالل زيارة صاحب السمو الملكي األمير محمد بن سلمان‬ ‫ولي العهد نائب رئيس مجلس الوزراء وزير الدفاع بالمملكة‬ ‫العربية السعودية‪ ،‬إلى معهد ماساتشوستس للتقنية في‬ ‫مارس ‪ ،2018‬تم ترشيح العمري للمشاركة في الدورة‬ ‫الثانية من منتدى “االبتكار لتأثير فعال” الذي نظمته جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبد اهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪.‬‬ ‫تقول العمري‪“ :‬لقد كانت فرصة عظيمة سمحت لنا بإلقاء‬ ‫بعض الضوء على قدراتنا كعلماء سعوديات والتعرف‬ ‫علينا كمحفز للتغيير يساعدنا على تحقيق الحياة في رؤية‬ ‫السعودية ‪.”2030‬‬ ‫تخرجت العمري من قسم العلوم والهندسة الفيزيائية‬ ‫بالجامعة (‪ )PSE‬في نهاية عام ‪ 2016‬وأجرت بحثها‬ ‫في مختبر توليف البوليمرات في مركز الحفز الكيميائي‬ ‫بجامعة الملك عبد اهلل للعلوم والتقنية (‪)KCC‬تحت إشراف‬ ‫البروفيسور نيكوس حاجيخريستيدس‪.‬‬ ‫تضيف العمري‪“ :‬يمكن للطلبة الحصول على العديد من‬ ‫الفوائد من تجاربهم في جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية‪ ،‬بما في ذلك فرصة اكتساب المهارات والمعرفة‬ ‫التي توفر التدريب المهني والنمو الفكري الناجح‪”.‬‬

‫أخبار الخريجين‬

‫كليمينز كاترباوير‬ ‫بعــد أن درس كليمينــز كاترباوير في جامعة فيينا‬ ‫في النمســا‪ ،‬التحق كاترباوير بجامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية حيث أمضى أربعة أعوام تحت اشــراف‬ ‫البروفيســور إبراهيم حطيط والبروفيســورة شويو صان‬ ‫وتخرج عام ‪ 2015‬بشــهادة دكتوراه في علوم األرض‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا في شــركة هيلتي‪،‬‬ ‫والهندســة‪ .‬يعمل كاترباوير‬ ‫حيث يشــغل منصب مدير األعمال اإللكترونية‪ ،‬ويتولى‬ ‫مســؤولية تطوير األعمال اإللكترونية للشــركة في وطنه‬ ‫األم النمســا والتفاعل مع مختلف أصحاب المصلحة‬ ‫الرئيســيين من الشركات العالمية‪.‬‬ ‫ويقــول كاترباوير‪“ :‬يعــد العمل مع زمالء من مختلف أنحاء‬ ‫العالم فرصة وتجربة رائعة بالنســبة لي‪ .‬وعلى الرغم من‬ ‫أن مهامي المباشــرة ال عالقة لها بقطاع النفط والغاز‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جدا في‬ ‫إال أن تنويع مهاراتي وكفاءاتي ســاعدني‬ ‫مســيرتي المهنية وفي أهداف كاوســت لتوفير المهارات‬ ‫الالزمة لتنويع االقتصاد الســعودي من خالل تخريج‬ ‫طالب ســعوديين من ذوي الكفاءات والمهارات في‬ ‫مختلف المجاالت‪ .‬فالمرافق والتمويل وفريق مستشــاري‬ ‫هيئة التدريس في الجامعة كانت من األســباب الرئيســية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عوضا عن‬ ‫التي جعلتني دراســة الدكتوراه في كاوســت‬ ‫الواليــات المتحــدة وأوروبا‪ .‬إذا كنتم تحبون التحديات‬ ‫وتفضلون العمل في بيئة محفزة‪ ،‬فإن كاوســت المكان‬ ‫األنســب لذلك‪ .‬تواجدكم في كاوست سيساعدكم‬

‫على التميز على الســاحة العالمية بســبب التجارب التي‬ ‫تخوضونهــا والعالقــات التي تكونوها في هذه البيئة‪.‬‬ ‫نصيحتــي لكــم أن تعمل بدأب وأن تتميزوا في كل ما‬ ‫تقومون به كي تحظوا باهتمام الشــركات المناســبة التي‬ ‫ســتدعم أبحاثكم وأعمالكــم وتحتضنكم‪ ،‬خاصة في فترة‬ ‫تدريب التي تعد أساســية النطالق مســيرتكم المهنية”‪.‬‬ ‫ركــزت أبحاث كاترباوير فــي جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية على تطوير طرق متقدمة لالســتخدام في‬ ‫هندســة مكامن البترول و الغــاز الطبيعي باالعتماد على‬ ‫مصــادر متعــددة للمعلومات‪ .‬وهدفت أبحاث كاترباوير‬ ‫لتوفيــر فهم أفضل لهيــكل مكامن النفط والغاز تحت‬ ‫ســطح األرض‪ ،‬تحديدا فيما يتعلق بإطالة صالحيتها وزيادة‬ ‫كمية النفط والغاز التي ســيتم استخراجها‪.‬‬ ‫ويقول كاترباوير‪ ،‬الذي يطمح إلى االنتقال إلى قســم‬ ‫اإلدارة وتولي منصب المدير العام في إحدى الشــركات‬ ‫العالمية‪“ :‬شــهدت دراســتي في كاوست بعض التحديات‬ ‫لكنهــا لم تخلو من فرص التعاون العديدة التي ســاعدتني‬ ‫في تحقيق الكثير والحصول على شــهادة الدكتوراه ونشــر‬ ‫أبحاث قيمة‪ .‬فالدروس التي تعلمتها في كاوســت من‬ ‫خالل مشــاركتي في العديد من األنشــطة ساعدتني في‬ ‫تطويــر قدراتي االجتماعيــة والعملية التي أصبحت جزء ال‬ ‫يتجــزأ من حياتي اليومية”‪.‬‬

‫غرومتشــو‪“ :‬بعد مرور عام‬ ‫وأضاف‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ونصــف‪ ،‬أصبحنا جميعا أصدقاء ولدينا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كثيرا‬ ‫أماكــن محددة نذهب إليها‬ ‫ً‬ ‫لنتسـ ّـلق‪ .‬وفي كل أسبوع تقريبا يأتي‬ ‫ليتدربوا ويتسـ ّـلقوا‬ ‫أعضاء من جدة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫نتدرب معاً‬ ‫الصخــور في الجامعة‪ .‬ونحن‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫كلما ســنحت الفرصة ثم نذهب إلى‬ ‫الصحراء في عطالت نهاية األســبوع”‪.‬‬ ‫ويقــول‪“ :‬الطبيعة في المملكة‬ ‫جميلة‪ .‬ففي الشــعاب المرجانية‬ ‫يمكنك الســباحة مع أسماك قرش‬ ‫الحوت والدالفين وممارســة الرياضات‬ ‫المائيــة‪ .‬وفي الصحراء يمكنك الذهاب‬ ‫البر يمكنك زيارة البراكين‬ ‫للتخييم‪ .‬وفــي ّ‬ ‫ومشــاهدة الحياة البرية‪ .‬رأينا الضفادع‬ ‫والســحالي والثعابين والقرود البرية‬ ‫والجمال‪ ،‬ونعلم أن‬ ‫والطيــور والماعز‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وضباعا في مكان آخر‬ ‫نمورا‬ ‫هنــاك‬ ‫نذهب إليه عادة‪ .‬الســكان المحليون‬ ‫ً‬ ‫دائما ودودون وأهل‬ ‫الذيــن نلتقي بهم‬ ‫ـرم لدرجة أنهم ويقدمون لنا الطعام‬ ‫كـ ٍ‬ ‫والماء والمســاعدة كل مرة”‪.‬‬ ‫نشاط متواصل‬ ‫على الرغم من أن رياضة تسلق الصخور‬ ‫في المملكة ال تزال في مراحلها‬ ‫األولى‪ ،‬إال أن الوعي العام بهذا النشاط‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جزئيا بفضل الجهود التي بذلها‬ ‫قد ازداد‬

‫مشاهير تسلق الجبال المشهورين مثل‬ ‫األمير بندر بن خالد بن فهد آل سعود‪،‬‬ ‫وفاروق بن سعد بن حمد الزومان‪ ،‬ورها‬ ‫محرق‪ ،‬وياسمين القحطاني‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬

‫فقد أصبح الزومان في ‪ 2008‬أول‬ ‫سعودي يتسلق قمة إفرست على‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مترا‪ ،‬وبعد أربع سنوات‬ ‫ارتفاع ‪8848‬‬ ‫أصبح األمير بندر بن خالد السعودي‬ ‫الثاني التي يصل إفرست وأول سعودي‬ ‫يتسلق قمم العالم السبع‪ ،‬وهي أعلى‬ ‫الجبال في القارات السبع‪ .‬وفي ‪2013‬‬ ‫محرق أول سيدة سعودية‬ ‫أصبحت رها‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫وأصغر عربية تصل قمة إفرست‪.‬‬ ‫والتحقت ياسمين القحطاني‪ ،‬أول مدربة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مؤخرا باالتحاد‬ ‫تسلق صخور سعودية‪،‬‬

‫السعودي للتسلق وباللجنة األولمبية‬ ‫السعودية كعضو في مجلس اإلدارة‪،‬‬ ‫وهي مسؤولة عن مشاريع متعددة‬ ‫تهدف إلى توسيع نطاق انتشار رياضة‬ ‫التسلق في المملكة‪.‬‬ ‫غرومتشــو أن مستقبل رياضة‬ ‫ويرى‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫واعد جدا‪ً،‬‬ ‫تســلق الصخور في المملكة‬ ‫ٌ‬ ‫وأن العديد من الســعوديين يرغبون في‬ ‫ممارســة هذه الرياضة‪ .‬يقول‪“ :‬رياضة‬ ‫التسـ ّـلق هي في بداياتها هنا‪ ،‬لكنها‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قريبا سيكون من‬ ‫تتطور بســرعة كبيرة‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الممكــن مزاولتها وتطويرها على أعلى‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جزءا من‬ ‫مســتوى‪ .‬من الرائع أن تكون‬ ‫هذه الرياضة الشــعبية‪ .‬هناك الكثير‬ ‫مــن اإلمكانات في هذا البلد الجميل‪،‬‬ ‫وأشــعر بدهشة عارمة ّ‬ ‫كلما ذهبنا‬ ‫الستكشــاف مناطق جديدة‪ .‬أنا أؤمن‬ ‫يوم نرى فيه‬ ‫بالمســتقبل‪ ،‬وسيأتي‬ ‫ٌ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫نجوم محترفين في رياضة التســلق من‬ ‫المملكة العربية الســعودية”‪.‬‬

‫عنــد انضمامه إلى جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫غرومتشــو مجموعة‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية‪ ،‬وجد‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫من الهواة الســعوديين الذين شاركوه في‬ ‫حب رياضات الهواء الطلق واستكشــاف‬ ‫مســاحات شاسعة من البالد‪ .‬يقول‪“ :‬وجدت‬ ‫مجموعة من المتســلقين السعوديين على‬ ‫وســائل التواصل االجتماعي وتواصلت‬ ‫معهــم وطلبت منهم االنضمام إلى‬ ‫تضم مجموعتنا حوالي‬ ‫بعض أنشــطتهم‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫‪ 10‬متســلقين من جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫للعلــوم والتقنيــة و‪ 10‬من جدة‪ .‬نخرج ً‬ ‫معا‬ ‫ونحدد‬ ‫ونستكشــف العديد من األماكن‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المناطــق على خرائط غوغل‪ ،‬ونبحث‬ ‫باســتمرار عن مناطق جديدة”‪.‬‬

‫بين الصخور‬ ‫والفنون‬ ‫ً‬ ‫غرومتشــو رسـ ً‬ ‫علميا في فريق خدمات‬ ‫ـاما‬ ‫يعمل إيفان‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫نشــر األبحاث ‪ RPS‬في جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنيــة‪ ،‬حيث يقوم بتحويل نتائج األبحاث واكتشــافات‬ ‫مجرد أرقام‬ ‫أعضــاء هيئــة التدريس في الجامعة من‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ومعادالت صامتة إلى أشــكال بصرية حيوية‪ ،‬تمهيداً‬ ‫ِّ‬ ‫المحكمة‪ .‬ومن خالل‬ ‫العلمية‬ ‫إلدراجهــا في المجــات‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يقدم‬ ‫عملــه عن كثب مع أعضــاء هيئة التدريس بالجامعة‪ّ ،‬‬ ‫إيفان رسـ ً‬ ‫مميزة لمنشــوراتهم في المجالت العلمية‬ ‫ـوما‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الدوليــة الرائدة مثل ‪ Cell‬و‪ Nature‬و‪ Science‬و‪.ACS‬‬ ‫غرومتشــو‪ ،‬الذي انضم إلى جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫تلقى‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تدريبا على فهم‬ ‫للعلــوم والتقنية في ســبتمبر ‪،2014‬‬ ‫األفكار العلمية المعقدة وتحويلها إلى صور يســهل‬ ‫فهمها‪ .‬وكجزء من فريق خدمات نشــر األبحاث المؤلف‬ ‫من ثالثة أشــخاص‪ ،‬يعمل هو وزمالؤه بشــكل منتظم‬ ‫علــى إظهار مواطن القــوة والجمال الكامنين في اجتماع‬ ‫العلم مع الفن‪.‬‬ ‫ويــرى إيفــان البرتغالي المولود في مدينة توريس‬ ‫فيدراس قبالة ســواحل المحيط األطلســي‪ ،‬على بعد ‪50‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كيلومترا شــمال العاصمة لشــبونة‪ ،‬أن الفضل في مهنته‬ ‫ومهاراتــه الحالية يعود إلى عائلته‪.‬‬ ‫يقول‪“ :‬والدتي معلمة‪ ،‬ووالدي نحات ورســام‪ ،‬وكانت‬ ‫رســامة‪ .‬بينما أعمامــي مصممين غرافيكيين‬ ‫جدتي ّ‬ ‫الفن‬ ‫ومصورين‪ ،‬لذا كان من الســهل أن أصاب بعدوى‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫في سن مبكرة”‪.‬‬ ‫إلى جانب شــغفه بدمج العلوم والفنون‪ ،‬يمتلك‬ ‫غرومتشــو شـ ً‬ ‫ـغفا آخر هو تسلق الصخور‪ ،‬الذي استطاع‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫أن ينميــه خــال فترة وجوده في المملكة‪ .‬حيث‬ ‫ً‬ ‫دائما ففي أوقــات فراغه الى منطقة نائية من‬ ‫يتوجــه‬ ‫المملكة لتســلق التكوينــات الصخرية الطبيعية والجدران‬ ‫الصخريــة الداخلية التي تحتويهــا طبيعة المملكة العربية‬ ‫السعودية‪.‬‬ ‫غرومتشــو بحماسة‪“ :‬أحب الرياضات الخارجية‬ ‫يقول‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خصوصا رياضة تسـ ّـلق الصخور ألنها تعلمك‬ ‫والطبيعــة‪،‬‬ ‫الصبــر والتحمــل ومواجهة التحديات‪ .‬قبل أن تنجح في‬ ‫تســلق الجبل‪ ،‬يتعين عليك التدريب لســاعات وساعات”‪.‬‬

‫الوصول إلى القمة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫امتحانا لقوة المتســلق‪ ،‬ومدى‬ ‫تعد رياضة تســلق الصخور‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تحملــه‪ ،‬وخفة حركته‪ ،‬وتوازنــه وقدراته العقلية‪ .‬ويعتقد‬ ‫غرومتشــو أن التسـ ّـلق الناجح يحتاج إلى قوة وتوازن‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫وتركيز ذهني ومرونة وتنســيق وتكنيك‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫“التسلق رياضة كاملة‪ .‬فإذا‬ ‫أن‪:‬‬ ‫ويشـ ّـدد‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫غرومتشــو على ّ‬ ‫تعلمت تقنيات الســامة األساســية يمكنك تقليل المخاطر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تقريبا‪ .‬اكتســبت رياضة تسلق الصخور‬ ‫بنســبة ‪ 100‬بالمئة‬ ‫ـعبية واســعة على مر السنين‪ ،‬وفي اآلونة األخيرة‬ ‫شـ ً‬ ‫أصبحت رياضة أولمبية‪ .‬وفي طوكيو ‪ 2020‬ســنرى تســلق‬ ‫الصخــور فــي األولمبياد‪ .‬هناك ثالثة مهارات في هذه‬ ‫الرياضة‪ :‬تسـ ّـلق الجدران‪ ،‬تســلق الصخور الكبيرة‪ ،‬وسرعة‬ ‫التسلق”‪.‬‬ ‫غرومتشــو رحلته في تسـ ّـلق الصخور في العام ‪،2001‬‬ ‫بدأ‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫التحدي‪.‬‬ ‫ومثل معظم المتســلقين‪ ،‬أصبح يعشــق هذا‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يقول‪“ :‬كنت أتدرب على التســلق الداخلي والخارجي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا‬ ‫بعد المدرســة وفي عطل نهايات األســبوع‪ .‬وعملت‬ ‫ولســنوات عديدة في مجال اســتخدام الحبال‪ :‬تركيب‬ ‫األلواح الخارجية‪ ،‬صيانة المباني‪ ،‬أداء المشــاهد الخطيرة‬ ‫للســينما واإلعالن‪ ،‬اإلنقاذ‪ ،‬إلخ‪ .‬وعندما ذهبت إلى‬ ‫الجامعة‪ ،‬بدأت في دراســة الجيولوجيا‪ ،‬وأصبحت تركيزي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫منصبا على التســلق الرياضي مثل تسـ ّـلق الصخور وتسلق‬ ‫الجدران”‪.‬‬ ‫استكشــاف المملكة العربية السعودية‬ ‫غرومتشــو‪ ،‬فإنّ ه يمضي عطالت نهاية‬ ‫عندما ال يتســلق‬ ‫ِ‬ ‫األسبوع في الســباقات الصحراوية التي تنظمها‬ ‫مجموعة “حجاز ألترا”‪ .‬يمكن أن تتفاوت الســباقات ما‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وصوال إلى نصف ماراثون وماراثون‬ ‫بيــن ‪ 10‬كيلومتــرات‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كيلومترا‪ ،‬و‪ 100‬كيلومتر‪ .‬وهو يســتمتع‬ ‫كامل‪ ،‬و‪50‬‬ ‫البر الســعودي‪ ،‬والمالكمة التايالندية‪،‬‬ ‫أيضـ ًـا بالتخييم في ّ‬ ‫وركوب الدراجات‪ ،‬والســباحة واستكشاف العديد من‬ ‫الشــعاب المرجانية في الســاحل‪ ،‬وغيرها من الرياضات‪.‬‬

‫أهمية البرنامج‬ ‫يمنــح البرنامج المتدربات من القيادات‬ ‫الجامعيــة الواعدة األدوات التي تمكنهم‬ ‫مــن التغيير وصناعة النجاح وإعادة‬ ‫رســم خارطة البيئة األكاديمية المحلية‬ ‫بمــا يوائم متطلبات وتحديات هذه‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تماما مثلما نجح في النســخ‬ ‫المرحلة‪،‬‬ ‫األربع الســابقة‪ ،‬في إعطاء المتدربات‬ ‫قاعدة ثابتة لمســاعدتهن في مسيرتهن‬ ‫نحــو النجاح‪ ،‬ووصول بعض خريجات‬ ‫البرنامــج إلى مناصب هامة في عدد من‬ ‫الجامعات الســعودية أصبحن قادة لها‪.‬‬

‫شراكة استراتيجية‬ ‫وكانت كاوســت قد عقدت شراكة‬ ‫اســتراتيجية العــام الماضي مع جامعة‬ ‫متميز‬ ‫تدريب‬ ‫كاليفورنيــا ‪ -‬بركلي لتوفيــر‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ـم خصيصـ ًـا للقياديات في الجامعات‬ ‫مصمـ ٍ‬ ‫الســعودية‪ ،‬حيــث حرص أعضاء هيئة‬ ‫التدريــس من جامعــة بيركلي على التعرف‬ ‫ـاركة من خالل االســتبيانات‬ ‫على كل مشـ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫والمقابــات التي تم جمعهــا وتحليلها‬ ‫قبــل انعقاد البرنامج‪ ،‬وذلــك لتقديم برنامج‬ ‫ـل يفي باحتياجات المشــاركات‪.‬‬ ‫متكامـ ٍ‬ ‫واشــتمل البرنامج على محورين رئيســيين‪.‬‬ ‫ُيعنــى المحــور األول بالمادة العلمية‬ ‫تخطيط‬ ‫المختصــة بالتدريــب التنفيذي من‬ ‫ٍ‬

‫وتواصل‪ ،‬إلى‬ ‫وتحليل‬ ‫اســتراتيجي‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫إدارة الفرق ورســم خارطة طريق نحو‬ ‫القيــادة التنفيذيــة الفاعلة‪ .‬أما المحور‬ ‫الثانــي‪ ،‬فيختــص بحلقات من المحاضرات‬ ‫التفاعليــة المقدمــة من قبل القيادة‬ ‫العليا في كاوســت‪ ،‬حيث يشــارك كبار‬ ‫أعضاء القيــادة اإلدارية واألكاديمية في‬ ‫الجامعــة طوال فتــرة البرنامج بمحاضرات‬ ‫وأنشــطة تغطي الجوانب المهنية‬ ‫والتقنية ألدوارهــم القيادية وخبراتهم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فضال عن تجاربهم‬ ‫الشــخصية ونصائحهــم‪،‬‬ ‫فــي برنامج الحياة المهنيــة لجامعة الملك‬ ‫عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪.‬‬

‫وتجدر اإلشــارة إلى أن عالقة كاوست‬ ‫والمشــاركات تستمر بعد إنتهاء فترة‬ ‫البرنامــج‪ ،‬إذ تفتح الجامعة أبوابها‬ ‫لخريجــات البرنامج لحضور برامج اإلثراء‬ ‫والفعاليــات األكاديمية المتنوعة التي‬ ‫تقيمهــا الجامعة طوال العام‪ .‬كما تعقد‬ ‫اللقــاءات الدورية المتخصصة لهن حرصا‬ ‫علــى متابعة تقدمهن وتطورهن في‬ ‫مجاالتهن المختلفة وتوفير مســاحة‬ ‫لمشاركة قصص نجاحهن‪.‬‬

‫كاوست تدرب ‪ 25‬أكاديمية‬ ‫سعودية ضمن برنامج “قيادات”‬

‫نظمت جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوست)‬ ‫النسخة الخامسة من برنامجها التدريبي للقياديات‬ ‫واألكاديميات في الجامعات السعودية”قيادات”‪،‬‬ ‫بالتعاون مع كلية إدارة األعمال بجامعة كاليفورنيا –‬ ‫بيركيلي‪ ،‬ورش عمل وصفوف تدريبية لمدة ستة أيام‬ ‫في مقر الجامعة في ثول‪ .‬ويشمل البرنامج تدريب ‪25‬‬ ‫أكاديمية سعودية من القيادات النسائية من عميدات‬ ‫ووكيالت كليات وعمادات ورئيسات أقسام وأستاذات‬ ‫مساعدات من الجامعات المحلية‪ ،‬كجامعة األميرة‬ ‫نورة بنت عبدالرحمن وجامعة الملك سعود وجامعة‬ ‫اإلمام محمد بن سعود اإلسالمية‪ ،‬إلى جانب منسوبات‬ ‫في جامعة أم القرى وجامعة طيبة وجامعة اإلمام‬ ‫عبدالرحمن بن فيصل وجامعة الملك عبدالعزيز‪ ،‬اللواتي‬ ‫تخرجن من كاوست‪ .‬وقد تم اختيار المشاركات في‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫البرنامج من خالل الترشيح من الجهات التي يعملن بها‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مسبقا‪.‬‬ ‫وفق معاير محددة متفق عليها‬ ‫يهدف برنامج “قيادات” في جامعة الملك عبد اهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية إلى تطوير قدرات القيادات السعودية وتحسين‬ ‫بيئة العمل في المؤسسات األكاديمية الوطنية‪ ،‬وبناء‬ ‫شبكات مهنية استراتيجية عالية المستوى‪ ،‬وتطوير الذات‪.‬‬

‫كما سلطت الندوة الضوء على العديد‬ ‫من الشراكات البحثية التي تقيمها‬ ‫كاوست مع األوساط األكاديمية‬ ‫والصناعية في جميع أنحاء المملكة‬ ‫وعلى المستوى الدولي‪ .‬وتوفر تلك‬ ‫الشراكات فرص تعلم وتعاون لم يسبق لها‬ ‫مثيل للطلبة المستقبليين الذين يريدون أن‬ ‫جزءا من األبحاث االستراتيجية التي‬ ‫يكونوا ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فرقا في البلد‪ .‬كما استمع الضيوف‬ ‫تحدث‬ ‫لعرض تقديمي عن مهمة الجامعة‬ ‫لالستثمار في المواهب السعودية خارج‬ ‫المختبر والفصول الدراسية‪ ،‬ودعم ريادة‬ ‫األعمال واالبتكار الشامل‪.‬‬ ‫كما دارت حلقة حوار بين الطلبة‬ ‫الموجودين والخريجين من األقسام‬ ‫األكاديمية الثالثة في كاوست عن‬ ‫المستقبل األكاديمي كمعيدين‬ ‫ومساعدي أساتذة‪ ،‬حيث تبادل فيها‬ ‫الحضور المعلومات والخبرات والدروس‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كثيرا‪.‬‬ ‫الواقعية التي أثرت المنتدى‬

‫كذلك‪ ،‬تم استعراض إنجازات مشاركي‬ ‫المنتدى من السنوات السابقة ممن‬ ‫يعملون كقادة أكاديميين في جامعات‬ ‫مختلفة في أنحاء المملكة‪ .‬وقدمت‬ ‫دالل العزي‪ ،‬خريجة جامعة الملك عبد‬ ‫اهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪ ،‬الكلمة الرئيسية‬ ‫عن تجربتها في كاوست‪ ،‬وتحدثت عن‬ ‫األبواب التي فتحت لها على الصعيد‬ ‫المهني والشخصي‪ ،‬وكيف أثرت رحلتها‬ ‫األكاديمية مع الجامعة دورها الجديد‬ ‫كأستاذ مساعد للكيمياء في جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبدالعزيز بجدة‪.‬‬ ‫وفــي مالحظاتها الختامية‪ ،‬قالت‬ ‫العزي‪“ :‬أشــكر جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫على مســاعدتي في العثور على‬ ‫توفر لنا األن جميع األدوات‬ ‫شــغفي‪ّ .‬‬ ‫الالزمة للنجاح”‪.‬‬

‫االستثمار في‬ ‫المواهب الوطنية‬ ‫نظمــت جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية “كاوســت” النسخة الثالثة من‬ ‫منتــدى المواهب األكاديمية الوطنية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ومحاضرا من ‪18‬‬ ‫معيدا‬ ‫بحضــور‪140‬‬ ‫جامعة ســعودية بهدف تعزيز القاعدة‬ ‫العلميــة والبحثية في المملكة‪،‬‬ ‫وإعداد قادة المســتقبل في مجاالت‬ ‫العلوم والتقنية والهندســة والرياضيات‬ ‫والهندســة من أبناء الوطن‪.‬‬ ‫يمثل منتدى المواهب األكاديمية‬ ‫الوطنية الجيل القادم من األكاديميين‬ ‫السعوديين الذين سيكون لهم دور‬ ‫محوري في تطوير التعليم العالي في‬ ‫مستداما‬ ‫موردا‬ ‫المملكة‪ ،‬كونهم يشكلون‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫للعقول الوطنية الواعدة في البالد‬ ‫للنهوض باالقتصاد المعرفي للمملكة‪.‬‬ ‫من خالل هذا النوع من الشــراكات‬ ‫بين الجامعــات المحلية‪ ،‬يقوم المنتدى‬ ‫بإعــداد الجيل القادم من الباحثين‬ ‫الموهوبيــن وأعضاء هيئة التدريس‬ ‫في المؤسســات السعودية‪ ،‬كما‬ ‫يقوم باســتقطاب مساعدي التدريس‬ ‫والمحاضرين إلى كاوســت وتهيئتهم‬ ‫ليصبحــوا أعضاء هيئات تدريس مؤثرين‬ ‫في المستقبل‪.‬‬ ‫من جهتها‪ ،‬تقول د‪ .‬نجاح عشــري‪ ،‬نائب‬ ‫رئيس الجامعة للشــؤون السعودية‬ ‫والمســؤولة عن المنتدى‪“ :‬يعد منتدى‬ ‫المواهــب األكاديمية الوطنية أحد‬ ‫أهم مســاهمات الجامعة في بناء بنية‬ ‫تحتيــة علمية وطنية قادرة على التكيف‬ ‫التحول الوطني وأولوياته‪ .‬نعمل‬ ‫مــع‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫مع أكثــر من نصف جامعات المملكة‬ ‫من أجــل تعزيز قدرة البالد على البحث‬ ‫والتعليم من خــال تلبية الحاجة الحيوية‬ ‫لتطويــر وتدريب الجيل القادم من أعضاء‬ ‫هيئات التدريس السعوديين”‪.‬‬

‫فــي كل عام‪ ،‬يزور ضيوف المنتدى‬ ‫الحــرم الجامعي للتعرف على أحدث‬ ‫إنجازات كاوســت في مجال البحث‬ ‫ومســاهماتها في تطوير المواهب‬ ‫الوطنيــة والفرص المتاحة للطلبة‬ ‫الذين يســعون للحصول على درجات‬ ‫الدكتــوراه وزماالت ما بعد الدكتوراه‪.‬‬ ‫وشــارك الحضور هذا العام في مناقشات‬ ‫مع أعضــاء هيئة التدريس والباحثين‬ ‫فــي جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنيــة حول العمل في مجاالت‬ ‫تشــمل الهندسة الميكانيكية وعلوم‬ ‫األرض وعلوم الحاســب اآللي والهندسة‬ ‫الكهربائيــة والبحوث في البحر األحمر‪.‬‬

‫ويعود الطلبة متسلحين بمهارات ورؤى جديدة ومستعدين‬ ‫إلثراء النسيج الفكري والثقافي للجامعة والمملكة‪ .‬ومنذ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫طالبا‬ ‫تأسيس المنح التعليمية في ‪ ،2008‬انضم أكثر من ‪60‬‬ ‫في البرنامج إلى برامج ماجستير أو دكتوراه في جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪ .‬وهذا الرقم مرشح لالرتفاع‬ ‫بحدة في األعوام المقبلة حيث يكمل أكثر من ‪ 450‬طالب‬ ‫جامعي في برنامج رعاية الطلبة الموهوبين دراستهم في‬ ‫أفضل الجامعات كمعهد ماساتشوستس للتقنية وستانفورد‬ ‫وبيردو وكولومبيا وجامعة كاليفورنيا في بيركلي‪.‬‬ ‫ومن جانبها‪ ،‬قالت الدكتورة نجاح عشري‪ ،‬نائب الرئيس‬ ‫للشؤون السعودية ذلك‪“ :‬ترعى إدارة الشؤون السعودية‬ ‫في الجامعة برنامج رعاية الطلبة الموهوبين‪ .‬واالختيار‬ ‫في البرنامج شديد التنافسية‪ ،‬ويتم عن طريق الدعوة فقط‪.‬‬ ‫وينبغي أن يكون المرشحون المقبولون من بين أفضل ‪3‬‬ ‫بالمئة من خريجي الفرع العلمي في المدارس الثانوية في‬ ‫صفية‬ ‫مختلف أنحاء المملكة ولديهم إنجازات دراسية وغير ّ‬ ‫مثيرة لإلعجاب”‪.‬‬ ‫يمثل التقدم لبرنامج رعاية الطلبة الموهوبين بالنسبة‬ ‫لكثيرين الخطوة التالية في رحلتهم األكاديمية مع جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية وهيئتها التدريسية بعد أن‬ ‫سبق لهم المشاركة في برامج أخرى تستضيفها الجامعة‬ ‫كمعسكرات التدريب على األولمبياد والمعهد السعودي‬ ‫للعلوم البحثية (‪.)SRSI‬‬

‫شراكات جديدة‬ ‫للجامعة‬ ‫افتتحــت أمس جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫“كاوست” وشــركة اليكا مايكروسيستمز (‪Leica‬‬ ‫‪ )Microsystems‬مركــزً ا جديـ ًـدا للتميز البحثي في نظم‬ ‫المجهــر الضوئي في حــرم الجامعة‪ .‬وبهذا االفتتاح تطلق‬ ‫“كاوســت” وشــركة اليكا مايكروسيستمز شراكة طويلة‬ ‫األمد في أبحاث علوم الحياة‪ ،‬تهدف إلى دعم وتشــجيع‬ ‫االكتشــافات العلمية الجديدة‪.‬‬ ‫وبهذه المناســبة قال الســيد ماركوس لوسر‪ ،‬رئيس شركة‬ ‫التميز البحثي في‬ ‫اليكا مايكروسيســتمز‪ “ :‬يشــكل مركز‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫مثاال ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حيا‬ ‫حــرم جامعة الملك عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪،‬‬ ‫عن شــراكتنا المتينة التي ســنتمكن من خاللها العمل‬ ‫مــع الجامعة وأعضاء هيئة تدريســها وطلبتها المتميزين‬

‫وقالت الدكتورة ســاندرا شــوموكل‪ ،‬زميلة ما بعد‬ ‫الدكتــوراه‪“ :‬لقد منحني هــذا البرنامج الثقة في‬ ‫قدرتــي علــى االنتقال إلى المرحلــة المقبلة من حياتي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫للتقدم ألول‬ ‫أخطط‬ ‫المهنية كأســتاذة مســاعدة‪ .‬وأنا‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫منحة عندمــا أبدأ وظيفتي الجديدة‪”.‬‬

‫إن مســاعدة زمالء ما بعد الدكتوراه‬ ‫العلمي والتقني‪ّ .‬‬ ‫في االســتعداد للحصول على وظيفة في جامعات‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫للقطاعين الحكومي والخاص توســيع‬ ‫أخرى‪ ،‬يتيح‬ ‫نطــاق تأثير الجامعــة إلى جميع أنحاء العالم‪ ،‬وبناء‬ ‫روابط دائمة للجامعة‪.‬‬

‫التخطيط المهني‬ ‫ألساتذة الغد‬ ‫يفوق عدد زمالء ما بعد الدكتوراه عن ربع عدد‬ ‫الباحثين في جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪،‬‬ ‫بمن فيهم أعضاء هيئة التدريس والطلبة‪ .‬فبعد أن‬ ‫ينهوا دراستهم ويحوزوا على درجة الدكتوراه‪ ،‬يأتي‬ ‫باحثو ما بعد الدكتوراه إلى جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية لتلقي تدريب إضافي يحصلون خالله‬ ‫على استقالليتهم كعلماء وقادة في المجاالت‬ ‫التي يختارونها‪ .‬وبمجرد وصولهم إلى جامعة الملك‬ ‫سريعا أن ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تولي‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪ ،‬يتعلمون‬ ‫مسؤولية أكاديمية أو قيادية هو عمل ينطوي على‬ ‫مجرد نشر األبحاث األكاديمية‪.‬‬ ‫ما هو أكثر من‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يتطلب منهم معرفة‬ ‫فاالنتقال إلى المستوى التالي‬ ‫كيفية إنشاء هوية مهنية‪ ،‬وكيفية إدارة ديناميكيات‬ ‫الفريق‪ ،‬وكيفية قيادة مجموعة‪ ،‬وكذلك كيفية بناء‬ ‫مهارات فعالة إلدارة الوقت ألنفسهم ولآلخرين‪.‬‬ ‫لمساعدة زمالء ما بعد الدكتوراه على تعلم هذه‬ ‫المهارات‪ ،‬بادر أعضاء هيئة التدريس في برنامج‬ ‫علوم النبات في قسم العلوم والهندسة البيولوجية‬ ‫والبيئية ‪ BESE‬في الجامعة إلى رعاية برنامج تطوير‬ ‫القيادة البحثية للباحثين الجدد في مجال علوم النبات‪.‬‬ ‫وقد ّ‬ ‫تكلف بالبرنامج البروفسور بيير ماجيستريتي‪،‬‬ ‫عميد قسم العلوم والهندسة البيولوجية والبيئية في‬ ‫الجامعة‪ ،‬ومجموعتان هما‪ :‬برنامج دعم زمالء بعد‬ ‫الدكتوراه والباحثين‪ ،‬وكذلك مكتب رعاية األبحاث‬ ‫‪ ،OSR‬تحت إشراف البروفيسور الكبير جان م‪ .‬ج‪.‬‬ ‫فريشيه‪ ،‬نائب الرئيس األول لألبحاث واالبتكار والتنمية‬ ‫االقتصادية في جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية‪.‬‬ ‫قدم الدكتور بول دالبي‪ ،‬المستشار التنفيذي وعالم‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫النبات األسترالي وعضو هيئة التدريس السابق‪ ،‬ورشة‬ ‫عمل تفاعلية مكثفة استغرقت يومين‪ ،‬استقطبت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مبتدئا تعلموا خاللها كيفية صياغة‬ ‫مهنيا‬ ‫باحثا‬ ‫‪24‬‬ ‫مقترحات المنح الناجحة‪ ،‬وكيفية خلق وعي ذاتي‬ ‫وبناء مهارات قيادية ووضع خطط مهنية‪ ،‬وسبل‬ ‫صياغة البحوث وتدريس البيانات‪.‬‬

‫غطت ورشة العمل أهم جوانب المرحلة االنتقالية‬ ‫التي يعبرها الزميل من باحث إلى رئيس برنامج‪.‬‬ ‫وقد ّ‬ ‫ركز زمالء ما بعد الدكتوراه‪ ،‬في خلق هوياتهم‬ ‫المهنية‪ ،‬على أدوات تسويق‪ ،‬مثل الترويج الفعال‬ ‫للذات من خالل االعتراف بمساهمات أعضاء الفريق‪،‬‬ ‫ودور وسائل التواصل االجتماعي في تعزيز العلوم‪.‬‬ ‫في اليوم الثاني من ورشة العمل‪ ،‬تلقى زمالء بعد ما‬ ‫الدكتوراه دورة مكثفة عن إدارة المشاريع‪ ،‬والتحقق‬ ‫من منطقية البرنامج‪ ،‬وتخطيط األعمال والمشاريع‪،‬‬ ‫ووضع الميزانيات وإدارتها‪ .‬وناقش الجزء المركزي من‬ ‫ورشة العمل كيفية جذب األموال من مصادر مختلفة‪،‬‬ ‫كالحصول على المنح والتمويل من الجهات العامة‬ ‫وأخيرا‪ ،‬وضع زمالء ما بعد الدكتوراه خططاً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫والخاصة‪.‬‬ ‫استراتيجية مهنية خاصة بهم‪.‬‬ ‫قال دالبي‪“ :‬أبهرني االندفاع والمبادرة الذاتية‬ ‫في هذه المجموعة”‪ .‬وأضاف‪“ :‬كان زمالء ما بعد‬ ‫الدكتوراه في جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫وتواقين لتعلم كيفية متابعة مساراتهم‬ ‫متحمسين ّ‬ ‫المهنية بخطط واضحة وشغف”‪.‬‬

‫قالت‪“ :‬تنشــئين أسرة جديدة وتتعرفين‬ ‫على أشــخاص من جميع أنحاء العالم‪.‬‬ ‫وتتعلميــن أن تصبحي مســتقلة‪ ،‬وتصبح‬ ‫المدينــة التي تعيشــين فيها بمثابة‬ ‫وطنك الثاني”‪.‬‬ ‫وكان للدعم والتشــجيع الذي حظيت‬ ‫بــه من عائلتها أهمية كبيرة بالنســبة‬ ‫لها‪ ،‬فقد ســاعدها في دفع الحدود‬ ‫قدمت بليلو‬ ‫وتوســيع رؤيتهــا للعالم‪ّ .‬‬ ‫للفتيــات بعــض النصائح المفيدة التي‬ ‫تعلمتها في مســيرتها‪.‬‬ ‫قالت‪“ :‬ثقي بنفســك‪ ،‬واطرحي‬ ‫األســئلة الصحيحــة لبناء فرضيات قوية‪،‬‬ ‫واســتمتعي باالنتصارات الصغيرة‪،‬‬ ‫واعملــي بجد‪ ،‬واألهم من ذلك كله‪،‬‬ ‫افرحي بتجاربك!”‬ ‫تطبيق العلوم‬ ‫في فترة بعد الظهر‪ ،‬شــاركت الفتيات‬ ‫في جلســات عمل مباشــرة مع باحثات‬ ‫جامعــة الملك عبداهلل وزميالت بعد‬

‫ً‬ ‫أبحاثا أجرينها‬ ‫الدكتوراه اللواتــي عرضن‬ ‫في الجامعة كما شــاركن في التجارب‪،‬‬ ‫واشــتغلن بالمعدات المختبرية‪ ،‬وأجهزة‬ ‫االستشــعار الدقيقة‪ ،‬وعملن على‬ ‫محاكاة العمليات والنتائج‪ ،‬باســتخدام‬ ‫العينات‪.‬‬ ‫الماصــات وأطباق‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫وكانت الورشة األكثر شعبية بال‬ ‫شك هي “ورشة الوحل” مع صوفيا‬ ‫برهومي‪ ،‬تلميذة الصف الثالث‬ ‫في مدارس جامعة الملك عبداهلل‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫معلمة‬ ‫والدكتورة سماح زينب جدعوم‪،‬‬ ‫مختبر األحياء الجزيئية والخلوية‪ ،‬حيث‬ ‫شرحتا عن السوائل غير النيوتونية فيما‬ ‫كانت أيديهما منهمكتان في خليط لزج‪.‬‬ ‫قالت آينــس‪ ،‬تلميذة الصف الخامس‪:‬‬ ‫“أحب خلط األشــياء‪ .‬أود العثور على‬ ‫عالج لألمراض النادرة”‪.‬‬ ‫كما أتــاح مركز أبحاث البحر األحمر‬ ‫(‪ )RSRC‬فرصــة إللقاء نظرة فاحصة‬ ‫على عينات األســماك والهياكل‬

‫العظميــة‪ ،‬في حين جربت طالبات‬ ‫المدارس تغيير الســوائل إلى الحالة‬ ‫الصلبــة عن طريــق إضافة مواد كيميائية‬ ‫إلــى محلول‪ .‬وكانت ورش العمل‬ ‫طريقة رائعة إلثارة الشــغف بالعلوم‪.‬‬ ‫مدارس جامعــة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنيــة في الحرم الجامعي‬ ‫قال جيف وودكوك‪ ،‬مدير المدرســة‬ ‫االبتدائيــة في مدارس جامعة الملك‬ ‫للمتميزات‬ ‫عبداهلل‪“ :‬تتيــح فعالية الترويج‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫فــي العلوم فرصة فريدة للمجيء‬ ‫وتعريفهن‬ ‫بالتلميــذات إلى الجامعة‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫على جوانــب عملية في ميادين العلوم‬ ‫والتقنية والهندســة والرياضيات”‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫دائما عن‬ ‫وأضاف‪“ :‬تبحث مدارســنا‬ ‫طرق لتعزيز شــراكتنا مع الجامعة‬ ‫لدعــم التعلم‪ .‬نحن ندرك أن الفرص‬ ‫الحقيقيــة توفر خبرات تعلم أكثر‬ ‫وضوحـ ًـا وديمومة‪ ،‬ونبحث عن أي‬ ‫صالت توفرهــا لنا الجامعة أو المجتمع‪.‬‬ ‫قــد يعني ذلك رحالت ميدانية إلى‬

‫قالت نيفين‪“ :‬إذا كنت شــغوفة‬ ‫بالعلــوم‪ ،‬امضي في هذا الطريق‪.‬‬ ‫مــاذا تفعلين عندما تســتيقظين؟ أنت‬ ‫تتنفســين العلم‪ .‬العلم موجود في‬ ‫الماء الذي تشــربينه‪ ،‬في معجون‬ ‫أســنانك‪ ،‬في الصابون الذي تستخدمينه‬ ‫فــي الحمام‪ ،‬في وجبة اإلفطار‪ .‬ال‬ ‫يمكنــك تجنّ ب العلوم”‪.‬‬ ‫وقالت آبــي‪ ،‬التلميذة في الصف‬ ‫الثامن‪ ،‬بعــد المحاضرة‪“ :‬أريد العمل‬ ‫فــي تقنيــات النانو للعثور على عالج‬ ‫لألمراض”‪.‬‬ ‫فرصة مدهشة‬ ‫ثم جاء دور البروفيســور شارلوت هاوزر‪،‬‬ ‫أســتاذة العلوم البيولوجية بجامعة‬ ‫الملــك عبداهلل للعلــوم والتقنية‪ ،‬كثاني‬ ‫متميــزة تحكي عن قصتها‪.‬‬ ‫امرأة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تكمــن اهتمامات هاوزر البحثية في‬ ‫التفاعــل بيــن الكيمياء والطب الحيوي‬ ‫والهندســة البيولوجية وتكنولوجيا‬

‫النانو‪ .‬وبإلهام من العالمة الشــهيرة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مبكرا‬ ‫ماري كوري‪ ،‬شــعرت شارلوت‬ ‫بأنهــا مفتونة بالعلم‪ .‬ومع نمو شــغفها‬ ‫ومهاراتهــا ومعرفتها‪ ،‬أرادت أن تجمع‬ ‫بيــن التخصصات وأن تجد العالج‬ ‫لألمراض‪.‬‬

‫الجزيئية للنمو في النباتات ودراسة‬ ‫آليات دفاعها في ظروف اإلجهاد‪.‬‬ ‫يعتزم فريقها فهم االستراتيجيات‬ ‫التكيفية التي تتّ بعها النباتات الصحراوية‬ ‫للصمود في ظروف قاسية‪ ،‬باستخدام‬ ‫أشجار النخيل كنموذج‪.‬‬

‫اســتطاعت أبحاث هاوزر عن مرض‬ ‫الزهايمــر‪ ،‬وأعمالها على الببتيدات‪،‬‬ ‫أن تحقق لها شــهرة واسعة في‬ ‫مجالهــا‪ .‬وذكــرت أنها لكي تصبح ما‬ ‫هــي عليه اليــوم‪ ،‬يمكنها فقط ذكر‬ ‫بعض مكونــات الوصفة‪ :‬الثقة بالنفس‬ ‫والشغف والمثابرة‪.‬‬

‫نشــأت إكرام وترعرعت في طنجة‬ ‫بالمملكــة المغربية‪ ،‬حيث أرادت أن‬ ‫تصبــح عالمة حيوان إلى أن اضطرت‬ ‫إلى تشــريح فأر في درس البيولوجيا؛‬ ‫ً‬ ‫بدال من‬ ‫عندها قررت دراســة النباتات‬ ‫ذلك‪ ،‬وانتقلت إلى إســبانيا إلكمال‬ ‫شــهادة الدكتوراه‪ ،‬ثم إلى أوتريخت‬ ‫فــي هولنــدا لزمالة ما بعد الدكتوراه‪.‬‬ ‫بالنســبة إلكرام‪ ،‬كانت الدراسة في‬ ‫الخارج تجربة مدهشــة‪◄ .‬‬

‫حب النباتات‬ ‫في ّ‬ ‫تدير البروفيســور إكرام بليلو‪ ،‬المرأة‬ ‫المتميزة‪ ،‬واألســتاذة المشاركة في‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫علم األحيــاء النباتي التنموي بجامعة‬ ‫الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪،‬‬ ‫مجموعة بحثية تهدف إلى فهم اآلليات‬

‫االحتفاء بالمرأة‬ ‫في العلوم‬

‫للســنة الثانيــة على التوالي‪ ،‬تعاونت‬ ‫جامعــة الملك عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫ومدارس الجامعة‪ ،‬بدعم من قســم‬ ‫العلوم والهندســة البيولوجية والبيئية‬ ‫‪ ،BESE‬فــي تنظيم يوم “االحتفاء‬ ‫بالمتميــزات في العلوم”‪ .‬ففي يوم‬ ‫‪ 17‬فبرايــر اجتمعــت ‪ 79‬فتاة من الصف‬ ‫الرابع إلــى الثامن في مدارس جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبداهلل فــي مكتبة الجامعة‬ ‫فعالية علمية ليوم واحد‪.‬‬ ‫ضمــن ّ‬ ‫كانــت الفعالية فرصة فريدة لتشــجيع‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫التعلم في‬ ‫وإلهــام الفتيــات لمتابعة‬ ‫مجاالت العلوم والتقنية والهندســة‬ ‫والرياضيــات‪ ،‬وتوطيد العالقات‬ ‫مع الســيدات المحترفات في هذه‬ ‫التخصصــات العلمية‪ .‬تســعى فعالية “‬ ‫االحتفــاء بالمتميزات في العلوم” إلى‬ ‫تشــجيع دراسة الرياضيات والعلوم‪،‬‬ ‫وتمكين الفتيات‪.‬‬

‫عمت المكان أجواء خاصة من‬ ‫وقــد ّ‬ ‫الحيويــة بمجــرد أن وصلت الفتيات إلى‬ ‫مقاعدهن‪،‬‬ ‫مكتبــة الجامعة‪ ،‬وأخذن‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫وتجاذبن أطــراف الحديث مع زميالتهن‬ ‫وتوجهت ديانا‬ ‫حول اليــوم المثير‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ميدالند‪ ،‬المعلمة في المدرســة‬ ‫االبتدائية‪ ،‬والبروفيســور ياسمين مرزبان‬ ‫األســتاذة المساعدة في العلوم‬ ‫البيولوجية فــي الجامعة‪ ،‬بالتحية‬ ‫والشــكر للفتيات على التخلي عن‬ ‫عطلتهن يوم الســبت في ســبيل العلم‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫قالت مرزبان‪“ :‬الشــغف بالعلوم يعني‬ ‫أن تؤمني بنفســك وأن تجدي الدعم‬ ‫مــن معلميك لتشــجيعك وتحفيزك ألن‬ ‫تتفوقي على نفســك”‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا إلى أن ‪ 66‬بالمئة من فتيات‬ ‫ونوهت‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الصف الرابع يبدون اهتماما بالعلوم‪ ،‬لكن‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حتما مع انتقال النساء إلى‬ ‫النسبة تتناقص‬ ‫مناصب أعلى في ميادين العلوم والتقنية‬ ‫والهندسة والرياضيات‪.‬‬

‫وقالت مرزبان للفتيات‪“ :‬آمل لقصص‬ ‫النساء المتميزات مثل نيفين خشاب‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫وشارلوت هاوزر‪ ،‬وإكرام بليلو أن تشكل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫بكن‬ ‫مصدرا لإللهام‪ ،‬بل وأن تمضي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫إلى ممارسة مهنة مضيئة في ميادين‬ ‫العلوم والتقنية والهندسة والرياضيات”‪.‬‬ ‫قصــة حب مع العلم‬ ‫متميزة أخبرت الفتيات بقصتها‬ ‫أول امرأة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫كانت البروفيسور نيفين خشاب‪ ،‬الفائزة‬ ‫بجائزة لوريال‪-‬اليونسكو المرموقة للنساء‬ ‫في جائزة العلوم في مجال العلوم‬ ‫الطبيعية ألبحاثها في الكيمياء العضوية‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫طويال قبل أن تصبح‬ ‫شوطا‬ ‫قطعت خشاب‬ ‫المرأة التي هي عليها اليوم؛ فقد خرج‬ ‫والداها من المدارس الثانوية‪ ،‬وعاشت‬ ‫هي في منزل مزدحم‪ ،‬حيث اعتنت بجدتها‪.‬‬ ‫عندما كانت نيفين طفلة‪ ،‬تساءلت عن‬ ‫األدوية التي تتناولها جدتها‪ ،‬وكيف‬ ‫تجعلها تشعر بالتحسن‪ .‬وهنا كانت بداية‬ ‫قصة الحب مع العلم‪.‬‬

‫ووقع اختيار غالو وميشــرا على مجموعة نباتات تشــمل الشــعير‬ ‫والطماطــم‪ .‬واختبــر الفريق عملية زيــادة المحاصيل مع ثبات‬ ‫اســتهالك المياه‪ ،‬وعملية خفض اســتهالك المياه مع ثبات‬ ‫المحاصيــل‪ .‬وأظهــرت النتائج األولية التــي توصل إليها الفريق‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تقريبا مع اســتهالك مســتقر للمياه‪ .‬فيما ال‬ ‫تضاعف إنتاج العائد‬ ‫يزال اختبار تقليل اســتهالك المياه مســتمرا‪ً.‬‬ ‫يقول غالو‪ “ :‬عندما تكون التربة معرضة ألشــعة الشــمس‬ ‫المباشــرة فــي المراحل المبكرة‪ ،‬يهــدر الكثير من الماء نتيجة‬ ‫التبخــر‪ ،‬وال يســتفيد النبات منــه للنمو أو لضبط حرارته”‪.‬‬

‫مجرد حل‬ ‫يــرى الفريق أن الرمل الطــارد للماء ليس‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫فعــال للحد من االســتهالك الكبير للماء في الري‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا زهيد التكلفــة وفي متناول المزارعين‬ ‫ولكنــه‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خصوصــا في مناطق العالم الصحراوية وشــبه القاحلة‪.‬‬

‫بقلــم نيكوالس ديميل‪ ،‬أخبار الجامعة‬

‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مبتكرا‪.‬‬ ‫مفهوما‬ ‫وال يعــد إيقــاف تبخر الماء في البيئات الزراعيــة‬ ‫ففــي العالــم الغربي يتم إنتاج نحو خمســة ماليين طن متري‬ ‫من البالســتيك سـ ً‬ ‫ـنويا ألغراض تغطية التربة الزراعية‪ .‬وبعد‬ ‫الحصاد‪ ،‬تصبح هذه المواد البالســتيكية‪ ،‬برأي ميشــرا‪“ ،‬مشــكلة‬ ‫بيئية كبرى”‪.‬‬ ‫ٌ‬ ‫يقول ميشــرا‪“ :‬في المناطق الجافة والحارة كالســعودية‪،‬‬ ‫تصل حصة الزراعة إلى نحو ســتين أو ســبعين بالمئة من المياه‬ ‫العذبــة‪ .‬وتصــل الكمية إلــى آالف الكيلومترات المكعبة‪ ،‬وهي‬ ‫كميــة هائلة من المياه”‪.‬‬

‫الهايدروفوبيــا (الطارد للماء) هي خاصية‬ ‫ـدة االرتباط مع‬ ‫فيزيائيــة لمركب ّ‬ ‫يفضل بشـ ّ‬ ‫الجزيئــات المحايدة نظـ ً‬ ‫ـرا لطبيعته غير القطبية‪.‬‬ ‫قليل‬ ‫يمكــن اختبار هذه الظاهرة عند ســكب‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫مــن الماء في مقــاة الزيت‪ .‬فجزيئات الزيت‬ ‫ال تترابــط مع جزيئــات الماء‪ ،‬وبالتالي تبقى‬ ‫منفصلة بوضوح‪.‬‬ ‫يقول ميشــرا‪“ :‬الفكرة هي اســتخدام الرمال‬ ‫التــي تتوفر بكثرة فــي المملكة العربية‬ ‫الســعودية‪ ،‬وخلطها مع مقادير نانوية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ثانويا لعملية‬ ‫من الشــمع‪ ،‬الذي يعد منتجـ ًـا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا موجود بوفرة في‬ ‫تكريــر النفــط‪ ،‬وهو‬ ‫ً‬ ‫نظرا لالحتياطيــات البترولية الكبيرة‬ ‫المنطقــة‬ ‫في المملكة”‪.‬‬ ‫وقام كل من ميشرا وطالب الدكتوراه أدير‬ ‫غالو جونيور‪ ،‬على مدى العامين الماضيين‬ ‫بالعمل مع فريق من الباحثين لدراسة ورصد‬ ‫زيادة استهالك المياه وإنتاج المحاصيل‬ ‫لمجموعة من النباتات بطريقة منهجية‪ .‬وبدأوا‬ ‫العمل في ‪ 2015‬في المستنبتات الزجاجية‬ ‫في الجامعة بالتعاون مع البروفيسور مارك‬ ‫تيستر‪ ،‬ثم انتقلوا‪ ،‬بعد دورة زراعة واحدة‪ ،‬إلى‬ ‫اختبار األراضي الزراعية بالقرب من قرية “هدى‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كيلومترا من مدينة جدة‬ ‫الشام” على بعد ‪20‬‬ ‫بالتعاون مع البروفيسور مجدي موسى من‬ ‫جامعة الملك عبدالعزيز بجدة والبروفيسور‬ ‫المشارك ماثيو ماكابي من جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪.‬‬

‫يعــد الهيدروجين واألكســجين‪ ،‬العنصران األول والثالث‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وفقا للوكالــة الوطنية للمالحة‬ ‫األكثــر وفــرة في الكون‬ ‫الجويــة والفضاء (ناســا)‪ .‬وبما أن الماء هو مركب‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫المركب‬ ‫أيضا‬ ‫كيميائــي مــن ذرات هذيــن العنصرين‪ ،‬فهو‬ ‫الســائل األكثــر وفرة في الكــون‪ .‬وعلى الرغم من أهمية‬ ‫المــاء للحيــاة ووفرتــه على كوكب األرض إال أنه ال توجد‬ ‫حتى اليوم دراســة موحدة تشــرح سلوك المياه من‬ ‫المســتوى الكلي إلى المستوى الذري‪.‬‬ ‫يقول البروفيســور هيمانشــو ميشرا‪ ،‬األستاذ المساعد‬ ‫فــي العلوم والهندســة البيئية فــي جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫للعلــوم والتقنيــة‪“ :‬أخبرنــي أحد الزمالء في الجامعة أن‬ ‫الزراعــة هي المســتهلك األكبــر للمياه العذبة في العالم‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كبيرا‬ ‫إيجابيا‬ ‫تأثيرا‬ ‫وقلــت لنفســي‪ :‬إذا كنت أريد أن أحــدث‬ ‫علي فعله هو‬ ‫علــى األمــن المائي العالمي‪ ،‬كل مــا يجب‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫توفيــر خمســة بالمئة من مياه الزراعة”‪.‬‬ ‫بــدأ ميشــرا رحلة التفكير بطــرق لتوفير المياه في القطاع‬ ‫الزراعــي فــي البيئات القاحلة مثل شــبه الجزيرة العربية‪،‬‬ ‫ومتوفرة‪ .‬وبعد عدة دراســات‬ ‫باســتخدام مواد رخيصة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫اســتطاع بمســاعدة طالب الدكتوراه أدير غالو جونيور‬ ‫تطويــر رمال ال تمتص الميــاه بخاصية الهايدروفوبيا‬ ‫(‪◄ .)Hydrophobic Sand‬‬

‫كاوست تعين‬ ‫رئيسها الثالث‬ ‫أعلنت جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوست)‬ ‫عن تعيين الدكتور توني تشان رئيسا للجامعة‪ ،‬على أن‬ ‫ابتداء من ‪ ١‬سبتمبر ‪ .2018‬وينضم تشان‬ ‫يتولى مهامه‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كرئيس‬ ‫سنوات‬ ‫إلى كاوست بعد أن أمضى حوالي عشر‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫لجامعة هونج كونج للعلوم والتقنية‪.‬‬ ‫وفي هذا السياق‪ ،‬قال معالي المهندس خالد الفالح‪،‬‬ ‫رئيس مجلس أمناء كاوست ‪“ :‬نتطلع للترحيب بالدكتور‬ ‫ً‬ ‫رئيسا لكاوست‪ ،‬فسجله الحافل باإلنجازات‪،‬‬ ‫توني تشان‬ ‫كقائد مبتكر في قطاع التعليم العالي‪ ،‬سيساعدنا على‬ ‫تحقيق أهدافنا الطموحة في زمن التحول الكبير الذي‬ ‫تشهده بالدنا‪ .‬وبقيادة الدكتور تتشان‪ ،‬أنا على ثقة من‬ ‫أن كاوست ستكون لها مساهمة فعالة في تحقيق‬ ‫أهداف رؤية المملكة ‪.”2030‬‬ ‫من جهته‪ ،‬قال الدكتور تشان‪“ :‬تولي قيادة مؤسسة‬ ‫فرصة واعدة‪ ،‬وأنا‬ ‫رائدة مثل جامعة الملك عبداهلل تعد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أتطلع لدوري في المنصب الجديد‪ ،‬وسأحرص تأديته‬ ‫على أكمل وجه‪ ،‬ليس فقط على صعيد الجامعة‪ ،‬إنما‬ ‫أيضا في حقبة االبتكار الجديدة التي تشهدها المملكة‬ ‫العربية السعودية‪ .‬فمن خالل عالقتي الطويلة مع‬ ‫كاوست وخبرتي في قطاع التعليم العالي‪ ،‬رأيت تأثير‬ ‫الجامعة على المجاالت البحثية العالمية‪ ،‬وأنا كلي ثقة‬ ‫من أنها ليست سوى البداية لمستقبل مشرق”‪.‬‬ ‫وتمتد عالقة الدكتور تشان بكاوست إلى العام ‪،2007‬‬ ‫حين استضاف آنذاك الفريق المؤسس لكاوست في‬ ‫سلسلة اجتماعات في العاصمة األمريكية واشنطن‪،‬‬ ‫عندما كان يشغل منصب مساعد مدير مؤسسة العلوم‬ ‫الوطنية األمريكية‪ .‬ومنذ العام ‪ ،2011‬شغل تشان‬ ‫منصب عضو في مجلس أمناء كاوست‪ ،‬باإلضافة إلى‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مؤخرا من‬ ‫منصب عضو في المجلس الذي تم إنشائه‬ ‫قبل هيئة االبتكار والتنمية في كاوست‪.‬‬ ‫خالل عمله في جامعة هونج كونج للعلوم والتقنية‪،‬‬ ‫دفع تشان بعدد من التطورات الرئيسية تضمنت تعزيز‬ ‫الرؤية العالمية للجامعة وسمعتها‪ ،‬وزيادة التعيينات‬ ‫وفرص تبادل أعضاء هيئة التدريس على صعيد دولي‪،‬‬ ‫ومضاعفة عدد األساتذة المبدعين في هيئة التدريس‬ ‫لما يقارب ثالثة أضعاف‪ ،‬والحرص على استخدام‬

‫ً‬ ‫فضال عن‬ ‫التقنيات الجديدة في التعليم‪،‬‬ ‫تصنيف الجامعة كأول جامعة آسيوية‬ ‫توفر الدورات الضخمة المفتوحة عبر‬ ‫اإلنترنت (‪.)MOOCs‬‬ ‫وبقيادة تشان‪ ،‬تميزت جامعة هونج‬ ‫كونج للعلوم والتقنية كواحدة من‬ ‫أفضل الجامعات في العالم‪ ،‬حيث احتلت‬ ‫المركز ‪ 30‬في قائمة أفضل ‪ 100‬جامعة‬ ‫في العالم‪ ،‬والمركز ‪ 12‬في التصنيف‬ ‫العالمي للجامعات من حيث فرص‬ ‫التوظيف‪ ،‬والمركز الثاني في تصنيف‬ ‫تايمز للتعليم العالي للجامعات الحديثة‪.‬‬ ‫قبل توليه رئاسة جامعة هونج كونج‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية‪ ،‬عمل تشان كمساعد‬ ‫مدير مديرية العلوم الرياضية والفيزيائية‬ ‫في مؤسسة العلوم الوطنية األمريكية‬ ‫وعميد العلوم الفيزيائية بجامعة‬ ‫كاليفورنيا في لوس أنجلوس‪ .‬وتخصص‬ ‫الدكتور تشان في مجال الرياضيات‬ ‫الحسابية ومعالجة الصور ورؤية‬ ‫الكمبيوتر‪ ،‬وتصميم الدوائر المادية ورسم‬ ‫الخرائط الدماغية الحاسوبية‪.‬‬ ‫الدكتور تشان هو عض في األكاديمية‬ ‫الوطنية األمريكية للهندسة وزميل‬ ‫في الرابطة األمريكية لتقدم العلوم‬ ‫(‪ )AAAS‬ومعهد مهندسي الكهرباء‬ ‫واإللكترونيات (‪ )IEEE‬وجمعية‬ ‫الرياضيات الصناعية والتطبيقية (‪.)SIAM‬‬ ‫كما قام تشان بتدريب وإعداد ‪ 35‬طالب‬ ‫دكتوراه ‪ 25‬زميل ما بعد الدكتوراه‪ .‬نال‬ ‫تشان درجة الماجستير والبكالوريوس‬ ‫في الهندسة من معهد كاليفورنيا‬ ‫للتكنولوجيا (‪ ،)Caltech‬وحاز على‬ ‫درجة الدكتوراه في علوم الحاسب من‬ ‫جامعة ستانفورد‪.‬‬

‫شغل جيسو لي قبل انضمامه إلى جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية منصب مدير‬ ‫مركز الحوسبة الفائقة في المعهد الكوري‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية‪ .‬كما شغل منصب المدير‬ ‫العام المؤسس للمعهد الوطني للحوسبة‬ ‫الفائقة والشبكات في كوريا‪.‬‬ ‫يقول جاستن ماينر‪ ،‬نائب الرئيس المشارك‬ ‫لألبحاث في جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية والمدير التنفيذي للمختبرات‬ ‫األساسية في الجامعة‪“ :‬لقد استطاع جيسو‬ ‫أن يضيف ثروة من الخبرة والطاقة اإلبداعية‬ ‫إلى جهودنا في مجال الحوسبة الفائقة‪.‬‬ ‫وكان لعمله في مجال التواصل‪ ،‬ال سيما‬ ‫في المملكة‪ ،‬تأثير فوري وإيجابي”‪.‬‬

‫وبقيادة جيسو لي‪ ،‬استطاع مختبر‬ ‫الحوسبة الفائقة في جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية تحطيم رقمين‬ ‫قياسيين عالميين بالشراكة مع شركة‬ ‫أرامكو السعودية‪ ،‬وهما‪ :‬أول محاكاة‬ ‫في العالم لخزان ذي تريليون خلية‪ ،‬وأكبر‬ ‫محاكاة للتطبيق الهندسي‪ .‬كما قاد‬ ‫جيسو العديد من المبادرات الوطنية داخل‬ ‫بلده األم‪ ،‬مثل شبكة الطاقة الوطنية‬ ‫في كوريا الجنوبية ومشروع العلوم‬ ‫اإللكترونية الوطني الكوري‪.‬‬

‫الحاسوبية‪ .‬كما استقطبت الجامعة‬ ‫موظفي دعم من طراز عالمي ذوي خبرة‬ ‫عميقة في مجال الحوسبة العلمية”‪.‬‬ ‫وأشار إلى أنه “مع تقدم البالد في إطار‬ ‫رؤية السعودية ‪ ،2030‬ال يسعني إال أن أرى‬ ‫المزيد من الفرص التي تلوح أمام المختبرات‬ ‫األساسية‪ .‬ومن المثير أن أكون هنا في‬ ‫المملكة ألعايش هذه الحقبة من الزمن”‪.‬‬

‫نواف الغامدي‬ ‫حصــول أحد طلبة جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫علــى منحة من مدينة الملــك عبدالعزيز للعلوم والتقنية‬

‫نواف الغامدي‪ ،‬طالب بمرحلة الماجستير‪/‬‬ ‫الدكتوراه في مركز أبحاث االحتراق‬ ‫النظيف في جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية‪ ،‬وهو من أوائل طلبة الدراسات‬ ‫العليا في جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية الذين حصلوا على منحة برامج‬ ‫دعم بحوث الجامعات والمراكز البحثية من‬ ‫مدينة الملك عبدالعزيز للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫(‪ )KACST‬نتيجة بحثه المتميز بعنوان “ترقية‬ ‫المواد الخام منخفضة الجودة باستخدام‬ ‫التحلل الحراري الحفزي”‪ .‬وسيتلقى‬ ‫دعما من مدينة الملك عبدالعزيز‬ ‫الغامدي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية لمدة عامين ليكمل دراسته‬ ‫البحثية لدرجة الدكتوراه في جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‪.‬‬ ‫تُ عد برامج دعم بحوث الجامعات والمراكز‬ ‫استراتيجيا طويل األجل‬ ‫استثمارا‬ ‫البحثية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫‪6‬‬

‫يهدف إلى تطوير المهارات العلمية‬ ‫الالزمة بين طلبة الدراسات العليا البارزين‬ ‫لتعزيز مكانة المملكة العربية السعودية‬ ‫بين الدول الرائدة في مجاالت العلوم‬ ‫وقدم الغامدي‪،‬‬ ‫والتكنولوجيا واالبتكار‪َّ .‬‬ ‫الذي يعمل تحت إشراف األستاذ ماني‬ ‫ساراتي األستاذ بجامعة الملك عبداهلل‪،‬‬ ‫مقترحه الناجح للحصول على المنحة في‬ ‫شهر يوليو من عام ‪.2017‬‬ ‫ويقــول الغامدي‪“ :‬فحصت مدينة‬ ‫الملك عبدالعزيــز للعلوم والتقنية جميع‬ ‫المقترحــات واختارت تلك التي تتمتع‬ ‫بأعلى مســتوى من جودة األبحاث‪ .‬لقد‬ ‫أخبرني مشــرفي الدراسي عن هذه‬ ‫الفرصــة حيــث أبلغته جامعة الملك عبد اهلل‬ ‫للعلــوم والتقنية عن المنحة”‪.‬‬

‫ومن خالل تطوير مهارات طلبة الدراسات‬ ‫العليا المختارين‪ ،‬تستهدف برامج دعم بحوث‬ ‫الجامعات والمراكز البحثية تطوير نظام دعم‬ ‫شامل ُيتيح للطلبة إجراء أبحاث ذات مستوى‬ ‫عالمي‪ .‬وقد تبنَّ ت الجامعة البرنامج باعتباره‬ ‫إحدى مبادرات مدينة الملك عبدالعزيز‬ ‫التحول‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية الخاصة ببرنامج‬ ‫ُّ‬ ‫الوطني ‪.2020‬‬ ‫متحمسا‪“ :‬تهدف منح برامج دعم‬ ‫وأضاف‬ ‫ً‬ ‫بحوث الجامعات والمراكز البحثية الخاصة‬ ‫بمدينة الملك عبد العزيز للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫إلى دعم طلبة الدراسات العليا في‬ ‫ماليا للتغلب على أكبر قدر من‬ ‫المملكة ً‬ ‫العوائق أثناء متابعة أبحاثهم‪ .‬لذا تتركز‬ ‫الفكرة في رفع مستوى األبحاث في‬ ‫السعودية‪ ،‬وهو أمر رائع”‪..‬‬

‫أعلنت جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية في هذا‬ ‫الشهر عن اسم رئيسها الثالث؛ الدكتور توني تشان والذي‬ ‫اعتبارا من بداية شهر سبتمبر‬ ‫سيتولى رئاسة الجامعة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كرئيس‬ ‫المقبل بعد عمله لما يقرب من عقد من الزمن‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫لجامعة هونغ كونغ للعلوم والتقنية‪ .‬والدكتور تشان‬ ‫هو عضو في مجلس أمناء جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية وأحد الشركاء المتميزين لها منذ عام ‪.2007‬‬ ‫تتطلع الجامعة إلى انضمام الدكتور تشان إلى مجتمعها‬ ‫متمنية له التوفيق في منصبه الجديد‪.‬‬ ‫عند الحديث عن دور جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية في اإلرشاد والتوجيه وتدريب العقول والكوادر‬ ‫الوطنية‪ ،‬فإن جهودها ال تقتصر على تنمية وتأهيل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا تطوير التقنيات‬ ‫تتضمن‬ ‫المواهب البشرية فحسب‪ ،‬بل‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫واالبتكارات والشركات الناشئة‪ .‬ستجدون في هذا العدد‬ ‫مجموعة من المقاالت التي توضح دور الجامعة في بناء‬ ‫قادة المستقبل‪.‬‬ ‫يقوم فريق من باحثي جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية بالتعاون مع علماء من منظمات أكاديمية أخرى‬ ‫بعمل االختبارات الميدانية التي تهدف لوضع حلول‬ ‫تساهم في خفض كمية المياه الالزمة لري المحاصيل‬ ‫الزراعية التقليدية إلى النصف‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أخيرا بإنشاء‬ ‫كما وبادرت المختبرات األساسية في الجامعة‬ ‫للتميز العلمي في مجالي الرنين المغناطيسي‬ ‫مركزين‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫والمجهر الضوئي‪ ،‬وذلك لتوفير أفضل المعدات والخبرات‬ ‫في العالم لهيئة تدريسها وباحثيها وطلبتها‪.‬‬ ‫دأبت الجامعة منذ ‪ 2009‬على اســتضافة برنامج‬ ‫تطويــر المواهــب األكاديمية الوطنية الذي يعمل على‬ ‫إعــداد المحاضريــن والمعيدين للتدريس في الجامعات‬ ‫الســعودية‪ .‬وقد التحق بالبرنامج‪ ،‬الذي يقام بالتعاون مع‬ ‫المؤسســات التعليمية الســعودية‪ ،‬أكثر من ‪ 100‬طالب‬ ‫وطالبــة من ‪ 20‬جامعة‪.‬‬ ‫واستضافت الدورة السنوية الخامسة من برنامج تأهيل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫سنويا لألكاديميات‬ ‫القيادات الوطنية‪ ،‬الذي تقيمه‬ ‫السعوديات بالتعاون مع كلية هاس إلدارة األعمال‬ ‫بجامعة كاليفورنيا بيركلي‪ ،‬حيث استقبل حرم جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية في ثول ‪ 25‬أكاديمية‬ ‫سعودية من القيادات النسائية من جميع أنحاء المملكة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫العربية السعودية‪ ،‬للمشاركة في هذا البرنامج الرائد‬ ‫الذي يهدف لتعزيز قدرة القائدات السعوديات على‬ ‫قيادة التغيير في مؤسساتهن وبناء شبكات مهنية مؤثرة‬ ‫ودعم نموهم الشخصي‪.‬‬
