In this month’s Beacon, we celebrate the realms into which technology—and technology at the University—expands our understanding of the environment and the world and even drives the exploration of new galaxies.

Robots like those from KAUST Professor Jeff Shamma’s lab are becoming “partners” with humans through University research, learning to collaborate in different missions and even save lives. Meanwhile, an international team of researchers including KAUST scientists are using a University-developed algorithm to image exoplanets using the famous Subaru Telescope. Japanese scientists and KAUST researchers also collaborated to implement a new algorithm harnessing the power of some of the world’s fastest supercomputers.

Closer to home, KAUST and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology researchers joined together to assess the quality and safety of fishery products from the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea using cutting-edge laboratory technology. Other University researchers outline in these pages how using bacteria may provide a novel solution in desert agriculture for increasing the yield of crops. To further explore our world in beautiful ways, KAUST students took up underwater photography—utilizing technology to showcase the colors and life of the Red Sea.

WINTER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM The Winter Enrichment Program (WEP), one of the hallmarks of KAUST, returned this year from January 13 to January 24 under the theme “TIME” and was chaired by Professor Valerio Orlando. The twoweek program was open to the entire KAUST community. WEP is designed to inspire students to be creative and think outside the box, showing students how they can impact others and how others can impact them— often in surprising ways. All students must participate in WEP for credit at least once during their studies at KAUST. The Enrichment Office puts on festival-style events with technical and artistic components designed to enrich participants through lectures, workshops, entrepreneurial, cultural and recreational events.

Since 2010, the Office has produced a total of 1,450 events; invited 1,240 international and in-Kingdom speakers; and attracted a cumulative audience of 101,850 attendees. NANO-ENABLED WATER TECHNOLOGIES CONFERENCE The KAUST Water Desalination and Reuse Center (WDRC) held the Nano-Enabled Water Technologies Conference on campus in January for the University’s academic community and in-Kingdom researchers, scientists and professionals. The event highlighted the role of nano as an enabler towards energy efficient clean water production and examined the challenges lying ahead.

The conference covered topics on fundamentals, applications and scaling-up of nano-enabled water technologies as related to ongoing research at the WDRC and KAUST.

KAUST RESEARCH CONFERENCE: 3RD GENERATION PHOTOVOLTAIC TECHNOLOGIES AND BEYOND The University hosted the KAUST Research Conference: 3rd Generation photovoltaic technologies and beyond in February. The conference addressed exciting developments in the field of 3rd generation PV technologies, with a primary emphasis on approaches for improving cell performance and manufacturing while looking toward future technologies. Artists of KAUST 2019, the annual exhibition in the University Library showcasing works of art by community members age 14 and over, will take place in February and March, with an opening reception on February 24 and a closing ceremony featuring the People’s Choice Awards on March 11. Robots with intelligence

The KAUST Robotics, Intelligent Systems, and Control (RISC) lab takes a “think globally, act locally” approach in swarm robotics. The RISC lab develops methodologies to deploy robots to work together to achieve collaborative tasks in missions involving crucial time-sensitive tasks, such as team search and rescue, patrolling for safety and environmental monitoring.

To address these applications, the RISC lab develops algorithms to enable robots to operate with limited or even no human supervision.

“We want to move away from the low-level remotely operated model to more of a high-level human supervised model. Instead of a robot being an extension of the operator, it can be a partner that is trying to collaborate with the human operator,” said Jeff Shamma, principal investigator at RISC and KAUST professor of electrical engineering.

A sought-after scenario would be an emergency event in which the robot is sent out to explore the environment, figure out where the attention needs to be and help evacuate or give aid to

an individual. Beyond building onboard intelligence, the RISC lab is stepping up the game through the use of game theory.

“Game theory is the study of interconnected intelligent decision makers. While it has been used traditionally as a modeling formalism in social sciences, our lab has been investigating its role for engineered systems,” Shamma explained.

In game theory, the consequences of one actor’s decision depend on the decisions of others. When working in a team, each team member must decide what to do, and the quality of this decision depends on what other team members are doing.

An example Shamma gave is engaging an intruder with autonomous drones. To work effectively as a team, some drones should pursue the intruder whereas others should distribute themselves to block off an escape route. Each drone needs to decide where to go based on both an anticipation of what the intruder will do and how the other team members will react. Another scenario Shamma

gave was a group of autonomous vehicles tracking an oil spill, where a good vantage point for one vehicle depends on the locations of other vehicles.

Another research direction in swarm intelligence examined by the RISC lab is programmable self-assembly. Here, small modules can attach and detach themselves to each other based on a handcrafted set of rules. As modules bump into each other in a seemingly random fashion, they actually can self-assemble into almost any desired structure.

The RISC lab is developing both algorithms for programmable self-assembly and hardware modules for testing and validation.

When acting as a swarm, individual robots can use message passing to other nearby robots to help coordinate their decisions. As individuals, they must decide what messages to send to others and how to react to messages received. To be effective as a swarm, “it is about thinking globally and acting locally,” Shamma said.

KAUST appoints new VP for research

Dr. Donal Bradley has been appointed as the University’s new vice president for research. He will join KAUST in April and comes from the University of Oxford, where he serves as the dean for science and engineering.

“Dr. Bradley comes to us with extensive experience in research administration at a number of world-class institutions. I am confident that he will provide strong guidance and mentorship 8

to our research community and be a staunch advocate for R&D efforts campus-wide,” said KAUST President Dr. Tony Chan.

Bradley is a distinguished scientist with a stellar research record. Among his many honors and awards, he was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society in 2004; a fellow of the Institute of Physics in 2005; and fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology in 2013. He is

also a Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher for cross-field publications, placing him among the most cited interdisciplinary authors globally over the past decade. He has a Google Scholar h-index of 125, having published over 630 publications with more than 80,000 citations.

In his current role as the dean for science and engineering at Oxford, Bradley oversees all the science and engineering departments

(mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering science, physics, chemistry, materials, Earth sciences, plant sciences and zoology). He has responsibility for over 2,400 staff and 5,500 students and is also a professor of engineering science and physics.

Bradley previously spent 15 years of his career at Imperial College London, where he held a number of positions, including VP for research and was the

founding director of the Centre for Plastic Electronics.

In addition to his exceptional academic record, Bradley also has considerable experience developing technology, with more than 25 patent families to his name. For example, he is a coinventor of conjugated polymer electroluminescence and is the co-founder of Cambridge Display Technology Ltd.

Bradley succeeds Dr. Jean Fréchet, who served as KAUST’s senior vice president for research, innovation and economic development from May 2010 to the end of 2018.

Bradley’s leadership and expertise will help to further KAUST’s research mission to leverage the interconnectedness of science and engineering and develop interdisciplinary approaches to fundamental and goal-oriented problems.

The world’s living oceans The Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation has been a major player in the preservation of marine life and the environment since it was established in December 2000. From its beginnings, the foundation adopted a specific strategy focusing on research, education and communication in line with its core values—as embodied in the slogan “Science Without Borders.”

The foundation seeks to put science at the service of nature and spotlights the marine environment as one of the Earth’s vital natural resources. It focuses on preserving the environment at all levels—locally, regionally and globally. This is done through conducting research, studies, 10

seminars and conferences in cooperation with numerous countries and international organizations, as well as with local institutions that include universities and ministries in Saudi Arabia.

Princess Hala bint Khalid bin Sultan, a member of the Living Oceans Foundation, recently spoke at the University. She discussed her father Prince Khalid bin Sultan’s passion for diving—which began when he first dove in the Red Sea in the mid1990s— and how this passion fueled the establishment of the foundation.

When he returned to the same spot to dive several years later, he found the marine environment and corals there had changed dramatically, spurring him to establish the foundation.

Two of the foundation’s most important projects were highlighted by Princess Hala.

The first is a research expedition that lasted five years, during which time 200 researchers visited 15 countries and 1,000 sites, collecting a large amount of information. The information is still under study, with the aim of producing recommendations that will influence the countries visited and their neighbors and encourage them to preserve the health and sustainability of ocean resources.

The second project is one of the foundation’s many scientific programs, and is called the Mangroves Program at middle and secondary schools. The program is active in Jamaica and the Bahamas, where the foundation regularly sends its specialists to visit local schools. They aim to raise awareness to produce an entire generation keen on preserving the environment and impacting their communities as a whole.

“The Kingdom is currently undergoing an important transitional phase in line with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030,” Princess Hala said. “Several tourist and economic projects have been announced along the shores of the Red Sea—the most prominent of which is NEOM, as well as the recently announced project Amala. This is certainly the time for us as institutions to begin community outreach and marine life conservation programs.”

Award-winning algorithm takes search for habitable planets to the next level An international team of scientists, including KAUST high performance computing experts and astronomers from the Paris Observatory and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), in collaboration with NVIDIA, is taking the search for habitable planets and observation of first epoch galaxies to the next level.

An on-sky demonstration was recently achieved on NAOJ’s 8.2 meter Subaru Telescope, and the Paris Observatory’s team is already scaling up the algorithms for future larger telescopes.

The KAUST Extreme Computing Research Center (ECRC) is working with the astronomers to develop the advanced ExtremeAO algorithms that will meet the formidable habitable exoplanet imaging challenge.

“Imaging exoplanets with large ground-based telescopes is 12

very challenging due to the star/ planet contrast and blurring induced by Earth’s atmosphere.

Very high-performance adaptive optics—sometimes referred to as ‘Extreme-AO’—are required,” stated Dr. Hatem Ltaief, a senior research scientist in the ECRC. A radically new approach to AO has emerged from the collaboration: faster, bigger and much smarter control algorithms.

Powered by the University’s linear algebra code running on NVIDIA graphics processing units (GPUs), the new computational system continuously optimizes itself and even learns to anticipate fast-changing optical disturbances induced by the Earth’s atmosphere.

“This fantastic new technology is already being used to take a closer look at exoplanets orbiting around nearby stars. With the larger 25-40

meter telescopes astronomers are currently building, new Earth-like planets orbiting nearby stars will be imaged and their atmospheric composition will be measured to look for signs of life such as oxygen, water or methane,” said Professor Damien Gratadour, an astronomer at the Paris Observatory.

ECRC researchers recently implemented a new Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) algorithm, often referred as the workhorse for numerical linear algebra, to optimally control a small high-speed deformable mirror to compensate for atmospheric turbulence. This research resulted in one of the best paper awards at the Platform for Advanced Scientific Computing (PASC) Conference 2018 in Basel, Switzerland. The innovation is already successfully used by astronomers to image exoplanets with the Subaru Telescope located at 14,000 feet in Hawaii.

“This challenge is further exacerbated with large telescopes, where imaging habitableplanets through Earth’s atmosphere is notoriously difficult, and requires a new approach to adaptive optics. Our previous AO systems were quite slow and lagging behind the fast-changing optical aberration due to atmospheric turbulence,” noted Professor Olivier Guyon, an astronomer at the Subaru Telescope.

“The SVD algorithm developed

by KAUST scientists is enabling us to correct in real-time for atmospheric blurring of images taken by large telescopes using smarter Extreme-AO. The algorithm now learns to optimize itself and we are no longer outsmarted by turbulence,” he continued.

Working closely with NVIDIA has been critical to the success of the project.

“This is an unprecedented HPC challenge,” said Steve Oberlin, chief technology officer for accelerated computing at NVIDIA. “Optical aberrations induced by atmosphere change over millisecond timescale. On current large telescopes, algorithms must compute thousands of deformable actuator positions in a millisecond or less to sharpen images. The Subaru Telescope is the highest recorded terrestrial use of these kind of GPU systems.

We are continuing to work with the team as the hardware is scaled up for this exciting project due to the critical performance impact of NVIDIA GPUs.”

The work of the project team adds to the historic contribution of the Middle East into the field of astronomy.

A multidisciplinary team of international researchers from KAUST and Japan’s National Institute of Informatics (NII) in collaboration with U.S. supercomputer company Cray Inc. successfully implemented a new algorithm to efficiently harness the computational power of the fastest supercomputers in the world.

“Software integration is ultimately the icing on the cake for advanced computational projects.

Thanks to Cray’s support, our algorithms are now deployed on all Cray supercomputers, including KAUST’s Shaheen II 14

supercomputer, as well as half of the top 10 fastest supercomputers in the world,” stated Dalal Sukkari, a Ph.D. student in the University’s Extreme Computing Research Center (ECRC).

The tectonic plates of the supercomputing world are shifting, with the scientific computing community at the dawn of the exascale age.

Supercomputers will soon be capable of performing 10^18 floating-point operations per second using billions of processing units. This unprecedented rate of execution

has motivated researchers to implement new algorithms that can effectively utilize the next generations of hardware to the fullest. The ECRC is working with a theoretical linear algebra expert from the National Institute of Informatics in Tokyo to develop high performance numerical algorithms for the current and next generation of supercomputers.

scientific libraries to support cutting-edge applications in machine learning and data de-noising.

researchers. The CCOE has been an instrumental framework to facilitate the KAUST SVD software integration into Cray LibSci.

“The current hostile hardware environment—with its deteriorating imbalance between arithmetic capability and memory access— is creating challenges for computational scientists and algorithm designers,” said David Keyes, ECRC director and senior associate to the president of KAUST.

“Increasingly, we find that hardware vendors, software designers and applications developers must collaborate closely to overcome technical challenges in a robust manner.

In the KAUST-Cray Center of Excellence, we’ve been able to perfect this three-way collaborative process and to impact the community as a result,” said Adrian Tate, director of Cray’s EMEA Research Lab.

Taking the new algorithm from a research paper to community mainstream dissemination for solving worldwide scientific problems required a range of skills from the multidisciplinary team. KAUST was awarded the Cray Center of Excellence (CCOE) in 2015 in recognition of its effort toward making high performance computing accessible for all. Moreover, the mission of the CCOE is to advance in-house scientific applications on current and future generations of supercomputers while promoting an important exchange of expertise between KAUST scientists and Cray

The new algorithm introduces an iterative procedure based on fundamental work by Yegor Zolotarev in 1877 into a computational framework. The algorithm converges rapidly, although it requires three times more operations than the new state-of-the-art serial algorithm.

These extra operations can be executed in a way that can extract new levels of computational power, therefore allowing for more parallel computations.

The Zolotarev functions were introduced ahead of their time 140 years ago in rational approximation theory when digital computers did not exist.

Until recently, they have been primarily of mathematical interest with limited practical use. They began resurfacing in numerical linear algebra and numerical analysis in the contexts of eigenvalue computation, matrix decompositions and analysis of low-rank matrices.

“Exploiting its optimality under function composition—and the power of today’s and future supercomputers—we are giving a new birth to Zolotarev iterations and we are able to outperform the currently deployed SVD algorithm,” stated Professor Yuji Nakatsukasa from Japan’s NII.

Monitoring the Kingdom’s consumable fishery products Knowing whether food is safe to eat has become a worldwide concern. KAUST and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) have partnered to restore confidence when consuming fish and other seafood coming from the waters surrounding Saudi Arabia.

To accomplish the fundamental and strategic initiative, KACST provided funding to establish an environmental contaminants lab at the University’s Analytical Chemistry Core Lab (ACL). The KAUST Coastal & Marine Resources Core Lab (CMR) and ACL collaborated to design a comprehensive project to assess the quality and safety of fishery products in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. Scientists from CMR collect the fishery samples, which are then submitted to ACL for processing and analysis.

KAUST scientists work closely with Professor Sulaiman Mohammed Alfadul, a researcher at KACST, on advice related to project execution, data analysis and interpretation.

“The collaboration between ACL and CMR originated in 2015, when KACST approached KAUST with the proposal to join forces on a major project,” said Heiko W. Langner, director of ACL. “We were asked to conduct an assessment of the environmental contaminants in Saudi Arabia’s marine resources.”

The goal is to test a representative sample of the seafood that is regularly consumed within the Kingdom. Given the nationwide scale of the project, the results will have a strategic impact on the Kingdom’s environmental and public health management.

along Saudi Arabia’s coasts—from Jizan all the way to the northern part of the Red Sea and from the Arabian Gulf that stretches along the country’s Eastern Province.

In those sections, they collected over 1,000 samples of various sea life species.

The sought end result, Langner said, is “to determine the exposure status of the Saudi population to these environmental contaminants.” In addition, there will be “recommendations as to which and how much seafood is safe to eat in any given area along the coast,” he explained.

“This kind of study requires a careful execution of the field sampling program to avoid any incidence of contamination during the collection of specimens and subsequent dissection of the tissue samples for chemical analysis,” explained Nabeel Alikunhi, the CMR scientist who is primarily responsible for executing the field sampling program of the project.

It is the task of ACL to determine the actual quantity of contaminants that include arsenic, mercury and many other toxic metals, pesticides and so called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that occur as byproducts of petroleum processing in fish and other sea organisms.

“We built a completely new analytical lab for this project [that] uses highly automated highthroughput methods to determine both organic and inorganic environmental contaminants,” said Ma’an Amad, ACL’s lead scientist.

“In the interest of a more efficient workflow, the seven to eight scientists in this new lab work

alongside robots. A similar lab without this level of automation would require 15 researchers.

Each instrument can make up for two to three people.”

“This type of research requires international standard methods and wasn’t possible to conduct in Saudi Arabia before,” said Zenon Batang, CMR’s lead scientist.

“The close collaboration between several Core Labs allows us to offer complete solutions to our clients; therefore, it is no longer necessary to contract any of this work out of the Kingdom.”

KAUST set to issue digital blockchain credentials using Blockcerts open standard

KAUST and Learning Machine Technologies recently announced that the University will issue Blockcerts, blockchain-anchored credentials. The move positions KAUST among pioneering institutions around the world like MIT, the University of Melbourne and Central New Mexico Community College.

Digital diplomas were issued to all KAUST students who graduated in December 2018 using the Learning Machine Issuing System.

The diplomas are anchored to the blockchain using Blockcerts, the global open standard for portable, secure and digital records that can be verified as official for a lifetime without cost. Developed jointly

by MIT Media Lab and Learning Machine, Blockcerts are led by a global community of contributors. “It is imperative that [KAUST], as a world-renowned science and technology university, takes a leadership position not only in the development of new and innovative technologies but also [in] the adoption and deployment of emerging technologies that provide significant value to our 18

students and alumni,” stated Jason Roos, KAUST chief information officer. “We are excited to partner with Learning Machine to leverage the unmodifiable properties of blockchain while issuing digital diplomas, which will facilitate more secure and easier means of verification for our future graduates.”

Scott Bray, KAUST registrar, noted, “This move towards cutting-edge digital technologies is just one way we are enhancing the experience for our students and graduates, complementing our suite of digital services.

The University’s Registrar’s Office now has the ability to offer both secure and accessible degree verification along with leading institutions such as MIT and Stanford.”

This move will set the University at the forefront of the digital transformation happening in the Kingdom and will be a first step towards building a new digital assertion concept. The flexibility of Blockcerts means that documents can be anchored to any blockchain— public, private or permissioned.

Recipients receive, store and share their digital diplomas via their Blockcerts Wallet, a free mobile app that acts as a private credentials portfolio accessible exclusively by the recipient. The recipient may choose to share their Blockcerts with any employer, government or educational institution in the world, instantly and without cost for immediate verification.

In pursuit of global food security Dr. Maged Saad, a research scientist in the KAUST Desert Agriculture Initiative, part of the University’s Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering division, focuses his work on developing unconventional ways to provide global food security.

“Despite the remarkable progress achieved by humanity in most areas of science and technology, many people on this earth still face starvation and poverty,” he explained.

“Last year, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced that the number of hungry people in the world has increased by 38 million—partly due to climate change—which led to a loss of approximately 60 percent of total crop productivity.”

Saad, a leading researcher in the team of KAUST Professor Heribert Hirt, works on three main areas: microbial genetics; bacterial adaptation to different environmental conditions; and the relationship between microorganisms and organisms—in particular the relationship between bacteria, plants and the molecular dialogs between them.

Rhizospheres and their effect on plants After obtaining his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biochemistry from Ain Shams University in Egypt, Saad received a Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of Geneva in Switzerland. He then carried out postdoctoral studies in Germany, the U.K., France and Switzerland, and chose to come to KAUST based on the ability to apply his “scientific and practical research in the field of agriculture [at the University],” he said.

Over the last four years, Hirt collected in a research effort called the DARWIN21 project bacterial strains from the roots of various desert plants in the Arabian Peninsula and neighboring countries in the Middle East. The research team now possesses the largest specialized bacterial library from desert plants of more than 2,500 different strains. This library may provide solutions to improve

“We identified and isolated Enterobacter sp. SA187—a strain of rhizosphere bacteria that lives in the root nodules of Indigofera argentea, an indigenous desert plant of the Arabian Peninsula. We found that using these bacteria in desert agriculture increases the yield of field crops. This use of rhizospheres is a new revolution in safe agriculture; it is inexpensive, environmentally friendly and will help poor farmers around the world to improve the productivity of their crops.”

The team identified, categorized and tested bacterial strains towards helping plants withstand stressful laboratory conditions in order to select the best for these efforts.

“We have seen some strains achieve remarkable success in increasing salt tolerance and crop productivity,” Saad said.

Increasing agricultural production using selected strains of bacteria will also affect local products in a manner consistent with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals.

Leading the way: Profiles of success across KGSP alumni ​ ince its inception in 2008, the S KAUST Gifted Student Program (KGSP) has provided talented Saudi high school graduates with a pathway to succeed as undergraduates at premier institutions in the U.S. The KGSP also prepares its participating students for their subsequent master’s degree and Ph.D. studies at KAUST, with the aim of adding to the cultural and intellectual makeup of the University and Saudi Arabia.

Upon graduating from their respective U.S. institutions, KGSP graduates often find themselves in high demand in both academia and industry. In the past, KGSP alumni have secured competitive industrial internship placements at companies like Google, Dow Chemical, Tesla, Yahoo and Saudi Aramco, among others. Several alumni have also gone on to create their own businesses, like AlMaha Systems, an internet of things (IoT) livestock health tracking system, and MOZN, an information technology and services company.

Abdulellah Abualshour: When I gave the KGSP Student Steering Committee speech during the KGSP Convocation 2018 event in Phoenix, Arizona, it was a moment for me to express my passion and dedication to the program and encourage fellow KGSP students to be even more dedicated and involved within the program.

The KGSP is one family, one community, and together we make the KGSP the great program it is.

Yasmeen Najm: My bachelor’s degree at University College London, U.K., was a roller

coaster of extremely happy and successful moments combined with quite emotional “I think I want to change my degree” moments. But our KGSP advisors were very supportive, so our summers were filled with opportunity to grow on all fronts…I had the opportunity to volunteer in one of the largest charity organizations; join a lab group; take courses outside my program [and] university; and even learn a third language.

These summer activities helped to shape my time in the U.K., creating a better-rounded undergraduate experience.

Abualshour: My long-term objectives as a computer scientist revolve around empowering Saudi youth with important scientific and research related skills, especially in the field of computer science. And with the support of the KGSP in the past and the vast resources offered by KAUST in the present,

Najm: Being one of the first students to join [the KGSP] in 2008—prior to the University’s inauguration—makes this program even dearer to me, as I have witnessed the KGSP’s progression and growth over the years. After pursuing all three programs one can obtain, I think I owe that much to KAUST and to Saudi Arabia, given that they’ve provided me with the necessary “gear” to push forward and succeed in the next stage of my career.

I will soon be joining a reputable oil and gas company as a senior scientist in their research and development department in Dhahran Techno Valley.

Hopefully there I [will] harness all the hard and soft skills I have obtained throughout my life and create my mark in the Kingdom.

Abualshour: To me, the KGSP is a symbol of opportunity—a stepping stone for a world of possibilities. KGSP students decided...to take this challenging yet exciting path as part of achieving their goals and ultimate dreams.

My KSA: Diving with the Underwater Photography Club

How about getting into your wetsuit with a scuba tank on your back and diving in the deep sea to capture amazing marine life on film? That’s what a group of KAUST students began doing on a regular basis after finding some underwater photography equipment on campus that wasn’t being used. The students found out they could use the equipment on the condition they started a student group—which then became the Underwater Photography Club.

At first, the students didn’t know much about the equipment, but after reading manuals and bringing new expertise into the group, they improved their skills and started taking great photos.

Twenty-eight enthusiastic divers are currently members of the Underwater Photography Club.

Becoming a member is fairly easy.

Students need to attend at least two meetings or events per semester and take part in pool training, and they also need to be trained to use the photography equipment. Students who want to be part of the group must be confident in open water and should have previously done several dives.

However, club activities don’t only focus on being underwater.

Last semester, members attended a photography class and learned the basics settings of the camera, picture composition and post-processing. The group also organized a quiz night to challenge their underwater knowledge, and they also initiated a lecture series entitled “Diving into” to discuss marine life topics.

an hour away from the KAUST coast; going out for a day trip on the Red Sea close to Jeddah; or occasionally leaving for several days to explore other areas of the Kingdom.

competition. The exhibition showcased breathtaking and vibrant photos depicting marine creatures and brought to life underwater colors rarely seen before.

While on a diving trip, the group tries to have a good mix of experience among the divers so that the more experienced can share their knowledge and expertise. Group members use two digital compact cameras (two Canon G12s) as well as one DSLR (a Canon 7D), all with underwater housings. In addition, they have several TTL strobes (Ikelite) that can be used with all the cameras, a dome port and a macro lens for the DSLR.

For interested students, there is no need to be an expert in diving, marine biology or photography— the Underwater Photography Group looks forward to meeting anyone interested in these areas and who wants to “dive in.”

Amira Alazmi Ph.D. student wins Royal Society of Chemistry poster prize

KAUST Ph.D. student Amira Alazmi recently won the Nanoscale poster prize at the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Symposium 2018: Nanotechnology for Energy and Environment, which was held in London, U.K., from September 6 to 7, 2018. The symposium, which was organized by the RSC Chemical Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (RSCCNN) Group, focused on recent developments in fundamental studies, novel material development and reactor engineering.

Alazmi, who is supervised by KAUST Professor Pedro Da Costa in the Laboratory for 26

Carbon Nanostructures, won the poster prize for her presentation entitled “Development of cobalt ferrite/reduced graphene oxide composites as a T2 contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging.”

Alazmi completed her master’s degree in chemistry (Chemical Science Program) at KAUST in 2014 and her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from King Faisal University in 2009. She is also currently working as a lecturer at the University of Hafr Albatin.

Her current research interests at KAUST focus on understanding fundamental aspects of synthesis of graphite oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and how these affect the outcome

of their function as active material in various types of proposed applications. Among other topics, Alazmi has investigated the inclusion of rGO in systems or materials designed for use in supercapacitors, CO2 capture and electrocatalysis.

“I am very pleased to present my work and win the poster prize at the RSC-CNN Symposium 2018,” Alazmi noted. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my advisor Professor Pedro Da Costa, who gave me the opportunity to work on this project, for his continued support and encouragement.”

KAUST at Falling Walls in Berlin KAUST student Hanan Mohammed and KAUST postdoctoral fellow Yi-Zhou Zhang represented the University at the international Falling Walls Conference in Berlin, Germany, on November 8, 2018.

Falling Walls, an annual competition for young scientists, innovators, entrepreneurs and creative thinkers, promotes exceptional ideas capable of changing the world.

Mohammed and Zhang were selected as the top winners from 15 finalists at the KAUST Falling Walls Lab in September.

The University’s Graduate Affairs’ Office of Professional Development sponsored the 2018 campus competition.

Falling Walls gave Mohammed and Zhang the opportunity to present their innovative research in front of a high-caliber jury made up of experts from academia, business and the public. Presenters had three minutes each to discuss the scope of their research.

Zhang presented his research into a viscous black hydrogel that can, for example, stretch, self-repair and detect facial expression.

Mohammed also presented her work in revolutionizing data storage in response to limitations in data centers in terms of space and energy.

Falling Walls at KAUST will return in August 2019.

Matthias Müller Ph.D. student wins award for drone research

KAUST Ph.D. student Matthias Müller, who works in the Image and Video Understanding Lab under the supervision of KAUST Associate Professor Bernard Ghanem, won the Best Paper/Presentation Award at the 2nd International Workshop on Computer Vision for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). UAVs are commonly known as drones.

The workshop was held in September 2018 in Germany in the post-proceedings of the 15th

European Conference on Computer Vision workshops. Müller’s paper entitled “Teaching UAVs to Race: End to End Regression of Agile Controls in Simulation” outlines the research of Müller and his colleagues Vincent Casser, Neil Smith, Dominik L. Michels and Ghanem on teaching UAVs to navigate through a racecourse autonomously using computer vision/machine learning.

“It feels great to represent KAUST at a top-tier international venue and to win the Best Paper award. I’m very thankful to my collaborators and my advisor,” Müller said.

KAUST startups place in top 10 at Startup Istanbul Three KAUST startups placed on the top 10 list of the best companies in the Startup Istanbul international competition, which took place from October 19 to 22, 2018. iyris, Oaesis and UnitX were selected from the top 100 startups out of over 90,000 applicants from over 80 countries in Asia and Europe. iyris secured the third place in the conference and exhibition that brought together around 4,000 leading entrepreneurs, innovators, venture capitalists

and investors to Istanbul as a meeting point between the East and the West. The startup was established by co-founders Derya Baran, KAUST assistant professor; Daniel Bryant; Nicola Gasparini; and Joel Troughton.

The solar energy-advocating startup, which recently won at KAUST’s TAQADAM Startup Accelerator grant-based competition, develops transparent photovoltaic technologies that turn windows into solar panels while preserving the aesthetic aspect of buildings and blocking the heat.

Oaesis developed its laserbased energy efficient lighting system to maximize indoor farms’ yield using low energy yet providing the necessary light for growing plants.

UnitX provides customized products and services for high performance computing, helping companies in the military, mechanical, aerospace and reverse engineering industries engineer better products faster by adopting a simulation-assisted prototyping approach that relies on parallel computing.

Abdulrahman Abdullah Alkhateeb Abdulrahman Abdullah Alkhateeb, a native of Dammam in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, received his master’s degree in mechanical engineering from KAUST in 2014. He is currently a mechanical engineering Ph.D. student in the University’s Clean Combustion Research Center (CCRC) working under the supervision of William Roberts, the director of CCRC. Alkhateeb’s research focuses on fuel combustion to examine the possibility of burning hydrogenbearing materials to run gas turbines to generate electricity.

“After graduating from high school, I was selected to join Saudi Aramco’s academic preparation program in 2007,” Alkhateeb said. “A year later, Aramco offered me a scholarship to join the University of Birmingham to get my bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. After getting my B.A., I went back to working with Aramco as an intern in the engineering operations area at the crude oil refining plant. [During] the same year, I was nominated to continue my studies and to get my master’s degree.”

Ph.D. student, mechanical engineering After completing his master’s degree thesis, Aramco sent Alkhateeb to work at one of the company’s most difficult and environmentally challenging plants, a crude oil production platform in the Rub’ al-Khali desert. One year later, Alkhateeb was again nominated by company management to complete his graduate studies. He decided to study for his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at KAUST because of his previous experience on campus and his first-hand familiarity with the University’s top-notch academic standards.

He joined KAUST again to begin his Ph.D. in 2016.

Thanks to KAUST, Alkhateeb noted, he has had the chance to conduct scientific experiments under the supervision of distinguished teaching staff, as well as the ability to be part of a high-level scientific community from around the world.

“These things make you proud, and [I’m] even more proud to have a world-class university right here at home,” Alkhateeb said. “To my fellow students, I say, ‘KAUST has a lot to offer—don’t waste this opportunity.’”

Ph.D. 2018, material science and engineering KAUST alumnus Zhenwei Wang graduated from the University with a Ph.D. in material science and engineering in June 2018. Wang’s Ph.D. research project at KAUST mainly focused on developing oxide semiconductors for transparent electronics. The Chinese native joined KAUST in 2013 and is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) in Japan.

Wang’s KAUST supervisor was Husam Alshareef, professor of material science and engineering, and he completed his Ph.D. in Alshareef’s Functional Nanomaterials & Devices research group. Before joining KAUST, Wang received his master’s degree in materials engineering from Xiamen University and his bachelor’s degree in material chemistry from Central South University, China.

After discovering KAUST through a colleague, Wang decided to join the University due to the abundance of “state-of-the-art research resources, high-quality faculty and students and the international environment. Also, I joined for the beautiful Red Sea,” he said.

Zhenwei Wang At OIST, Wang and his research group are developing novel biological sensing (biosensing) devices using tiny nanoparticles. Their research explores the bio-sensing performance of these devices, which can be greatly enhanced by the nanoparticles the group use in their experiments.

“In the future, I envisage my research moving towards developing novel biological sensors for better medical detecting performance,” Wang explained.

Wang describes his five years at KAUST “as sweet as a dream—[my time there] was a pleasant [and] peaceful and [KAUST is an] efficient place. My Ph.D. advisor Professor Husam Alshareef provided me with tremendous help and understanding in both my research and life. I feel lucky to be a member of the KAUST family. At KAUST, I learned—and still hold—the spirit of curiosity and the bravery to discover the unknown.”

Community roundup Adopting a healthy lifestyle is on the agenda for the KAUST community. During this year’s Winter Enrichment Program, which ran from January 13 to 24, the KAUST Farmers Market featured locally sourced produce, nuts, seeds, honey and fresh fish for sale. Community members connected with farmers from Saudi Arabia to learn more about the production of local food and green agricultural practices.

After all, there’s nothing quite like a meal prepared from scratch that’s enhanced with local herbs and spices.

A balanced way of living also means getting enough exercise. The Community Fitness Challenge (CFC) is a program that encourages community members to be physically active over a period of 80 days. Over 100 teams enrolled this year in the program’s two challenges: the “participation challenge” and the “step challenge.” In the participation challenge, participants earn points towards prizes as individuals and as a team. In the step challenge, they strive towards the goal of 10,000 daily steps. The event started on January 11 and ends on March 31. Good luck to all teams!

For the past three years, the KAUST Red Sea Rugby Club has been invited to play in the prestigious Emirates Dubai Rugby Sevens competition. The KAUST Red Sea Rugby team is made of players from across the community and includes professors, researchers, employees, students, teachers, contractors and service providers. In competition, the team plays as the “Sand Sharks.” Again in 2019, the Sand Sharks flew to Dubai to play the competition. In the quarter finals, the KAUST team faced the Dubai Tigers RUFC and won 24-12, which progressed the team to the semifinals and to face the Dubai Lankans, with the Sand Sharks defeating them 31-7. The final was a close-fought encounter, with the final play of the match being decisive and giving the Beaver Nomads a 24-14 victory over the KAUST team. It was a fantastic effort from all to perform so well against teams from the UAE who compete regularly.

My University Greg Burnell Greg Burnell is the fire chief of the KAUST Fire Department (KFD). He and his team respond promptly to incidents anywhere at KAUST and educate the community on fire prevention measures. The firefighters also rely on the KAUST Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) for supplementary manpower in the event of KFD resources being stretched beyond capacity. These could include large-scale incidents, multiple concurrent incidents, time consuming situations or public event safety.

“In a close-knit community such as KAUST, we all have a vested interest in each other’s safety and well-being. KAUST is so unique in this regard—we all work together, live together and play together,” Burnell said.

The KVFD volunteers at the come from all over the world—from Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, Belgium, Ireland, Pakistan, the U.S., the Netherlands, Malaysia, England, Romania, Latvia, Australia, Lebanon, Portugal and many more. Firefighters worldwide share challenges and joys and have a special camaraderie. Being a volunteer is life-enhancing, character-building and empowering. Volunteers also develop life saving skills that can be called on during emergency situations.

This month’s submission comes from Aditya Prabaswara, a Ph.D. student in electrical engineering supervised by KAUST Professor Boon Ooi. Prabaswara photographed the the Beacon at nighttime under a full moon because “it’s the most iconic monument in KAUST, and everything surrounding it—like the docks, boats, the campus from afar and the pathway leading up to it—make it a really nice location to photograph,” he said. “Sometimes I like to take my camera with me and stroll around, taking photos as I go. The night I took the photo, I found a good opportunity to take a unique picture with the Beacon and the moon in one frame.”

Prabaswara began taking his photography skills more seriously after joining KAUST in 2014.

“The campus buildings and monuments are really beautiful when lighted up at night,” Prabaswara added. “Even after being at KAUST for more than four years, if I pay attention while wandering around the campus, I still find new objects or places at KAUST that make for unique pictures.”

‫أخبار المجتمع‬ ‫يعد تبني أسلوب حياة صحي من المواضيع الرئيسية‬ ‫المطروحة ضمن جدول أعمال مجتمع كاوست‪ .‬ومن‬ ‫خالل برنامج اإلثراء الشتوي لهذا العام‪ ،‬والذي انعقد‬ ‫في الفترة من ‪ 13‬إلى ‪ 24‬يناير‪ ،‬تميز سوق المزارعين‬ ‫في جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوست)‬ ‫بمنتجات محلية‪ ،‬ومكسرات‪ ،‬وبذور‪ ،‬وعسل‪ ،‬وأسماك‬ ‫طازجة‪ .‬وتمكن أفراد مجتمع كاوست من التواصل‬ ‫مباشرة مع المزارعين من مختلف أنحاء المملكة‪،‬‬ ‫للتعرف على المزيد من المعلومات بشأن إنتاج األغذية‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المحلية والممارسات الزراعية الخضراء‪.‬‬ ‫اسلوب الحياة صحي ال يكتمل دون ممارسة التمارين‬ ‫الرياضية‪ ،‬لذا نظم مجتمع كاوست تحدي اللياقة‬ ‫المجتمعية (‪،)Community Fitness Challenge‬‬ ‫الذي يشجع أعضاء المجتمع على أن يكونوا نشيطين‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫يوما‪ .‬وشارك أكثر من ‪ 100‬فريق‬ ‫بدنيا على مدى ‪80‬‬ ‫هذا العام في التحديين اللذين أطلقهما البرنامج‪،‬‬ ‫وهما‪" :‬تحدي المشاركة" و"تحدي الخطوة"‪ .‬وفي‬ ‫تحدي المشاركة‪ ،‬يكتسب المشاركون النقاط كأفراد‬ ‫وكفريق‪ .‬وفي تحدي الخطوة‪ ،‬يسعى أعضاء الفريق‬ ‫إلى تحقيق ‪ 10000‬خطوة يومية‪ .‬وتستمر فعاليات‬ ‫هذا التحدي من ‪ 11‬يناير إلى ‪ 31‬مارس‪.‬‬

‫على مدار السنوات الثالث الماضية‪ ،‬وجهت الدعوات‬ ‫إلى نادي البحر األحمر للرغبي في كاوست‪ ،‬للمشاركة‬ ‫ويضم فريق‬ ‫في مسابقة طيران اإلمارات دبي للرجبي‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫البحر األحمر للرغبي في كاوست العبين من جميع‬ ‫أنحاء المجتمع‪ ،‬من أساتذة وباحثين وموظفين وطلبة‬ ‫ومدرسين ومقاولين ومقدمي خدمات‪ .‬ويحمل فريق‬ ‫كاوست المشارك في المسابقة اسم ‪.Sand Sharks‬‬ ‫وهذا العام سافر فريق ‪ Sand Sharks‬إلى دبي‬ ‫للتنافس في المسابقة‪ .‬وتمكن الفريق من التأهل إلى‬ ‫الدور ربع النهائي‪ ،‬بعد تغلبه على فريق ‪Dubai Tigers‬‬ ‫‪ RUFC‬بنتيجة ‪ ،24-12‬ومن ثم تأهل إلى الدور ما قبل‬ ‫النهائي لمواجهة ‪ ،Dubai Lankans‬حيث فاز عليه‬ ‫فريق كاوست بنتيجة ‪ .31-7‬وفي المباراة النهائية‪،‬‬ ‫واجه فريق كاوست فريق ‪ Beaver Nomads‬في‬ ‫منافسة شيدية‪ ،‬تمكن فيها الفريق المنافس من الفوز‬ ‫بنتيجة ‪ ،24-14‬على الرغم من العمل الجماعي الرائع‬ ‫واألداء المميز‪.‬‬

‫طالب دكتوراه‬ ‫في علوم وهندســة المواد‬

‫تخــرج زنــوي ونغ من جامعة الملك عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنية في يونيو‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حائزا على شــهادة الدكتوراه في علوم وهندســة المواد‪.‬‬ ‫‪،2018‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ركزت دراســة ونغ لنيل شــهادة الدكتوراه أساسا على تطوير أشباه‬ ‫موصالت األكســيد لإللكترونيات الشــفافة‪ .‬وكان الشاب الصيني‬ ‫األصــل قــد انضم إلى جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية في‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا باحث مــا بعد الدكتوراه في معهد أوكيناوا‬ ‫العــام ‪ ،2013‬وهــو‬ ‫للعلــوم والتكنولوجيا في اليابان‪.‬‬ ‫كان األســتاذ المشــرف على ونغ في جامعة الملك عبداهلل هو‬ ‫البروفيســور حسام الشــريف‪ ،‬أستاذ علوم وهندسة المواد‪ ،‬وأكمل‬ ‫ونغ شــهادة الدكتوراه ضمن مجموعة أبحاث المواد واألجهزة‬ ‫النانوية التي يشــرف عليها الشــريف‪ .‬وقبل انضمامه إلى كاوست‪،‬‬ ‫حصل ونغ على درجة الماجســتير في هندســة المواد من جامعة‬ ‫شــيامن‪ ،‬ودرجة البكالوريوس فــي كيمياء المواد من جامعة جنوب‬ ‫وسط الصين‪.‬‬ ‫تعرف ونغ على كاوســت من خالل زميل له‪ ،‬قرر االنضمام إليها‪.‬‬ ‫وبعد ّ‬ ‫يقول ونغ في هذا الصدد‪" :‬انضممت إلى كاوســت بســبب وفرة‬ ‫وتميز هيئة تدريســها وطلبتها‪ ،‬وبيئها الدولية‬ ‫المــوارد البحثيــة الحديثة‪،‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المميــزة‪ .‬كمــا انضممت إلى الجامعــة بفضل البحر األحمر الجميل"‪.‬‬

‫زينوي‬ ‫ونغ‬ ‫فــي معهد أوكيناوا للعلــوم والتكنولوجيا‪ ،‬يعمل ونغ‬ ‫ومجموعتــه البحثية على تطوير أجهزة استشــعار حيوية‬ ‫الحيوية) باســتخدام جســيمات صغيرة نانوية‪.‬‬ ‫جديدة (اللواقط‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يستكشــف بحثهم أداء االستشــعار البيولوجي لهذه األجهزة‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كثيرا بفضل الجســيمات النانوية التي‬ ‫والتــي يمكــن أن تتعزز‬ ‫تســتخدمها المجموعة في تجاربها‪.‬‬ ‫ويشــرح ونغ‪" :‬في المســتقبل‪ ،‬أتصور أن بحثي سيتجه نحو‬ ‫تطوير أجهزة استشــعار بيولوجية جديدة لتحســين أداء‬ ‫الكشف الطبي"‪.‬‬ ‫يصف ونغ الســنوات الخمس التي قضاها في جامعة‬ ‫الملــك عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنيــة بأنها "حلوة مثل حلم‪ .‬لقد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فعاال‪.‬‬ ‫مكانا‬ ‫أوقاتا ممتعة وهادئة‪ ،‬وكانت كاوســت‬ ‫كانت‬ ‫قدم لي أســتاذي المشــرف البروفيسور حسام الشريف‬ ‫ولقد ّ‬ ‫وزودني بفهم كبير‪ ،‬كان له عظيم األثر على‬ ‫مســاعدة جليلة ّ‬ ‫بحثي وعلى حياتي ككل‪ .‬أشــعر بأنني محظوظ كوني‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عضوا في عائلة جامعة الملك عبداهلل‪ .‬ففي كاوســت‬ ‫تعلمت روح الفضول والشــجاعة الكتشــاف المجهول‪ ،‬وهذا‬ ‫أمــر مازلت أحتفظ به"‪.‬‬

‫طلبة كاوست وخريجوها‬

‫عبدالرحمن‬ ‫عبداهلل الخطيب‬ ‫وتحديدا‬ ‫ولد عبدالرحمن عبداهلل الخطيب في شرق المملكة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫في مدينة الدمام‪ .‬واليوم‪ ،‬يعمل عبدالرحمن على إتمام‬ ‫مرحلة الدكتوراة بعد أن نال درجة الماجستير في الهندسة‬ ‫الميكانيكية من جامعة الملك عبد اهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫(كاوست) عام ‪.2014‬‬ ‫ُ‬ ‫متحدثا عن طفولته‪" :‬نشأت في عائلة تؤمن‬ ‫يقول عبدالرحمن‬ ‫دائما "العلم يرفع ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫بيتا‬ ‫بالعلم والتعلم‪ ،‬إذ كان يتردد في بيتنا‬ ‫ال عماد له‪ ،‬والجهل يهدم بيت العز والشرف"‪ .‬فعندما كنت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫دائما أن اإلنسان يستطيع تحقيق‬ ‫صغيرا‪ ،‬كان أبي يقول لنا‬ ‫الكثير من اإلنجازات‪ ،‬ولكن البد له أن يبذل مجهود لكل عمل‪،‬‬ ‫فمن جد وجد ومن زرع حصد‪ .‬فبعد اإلنتهاء من مرحلة الثانوية‪،‬‬ ‫تم اختياري لإلتحاق ببرنامج اإلعداد الجامعي في شركة‬ ‫أرامكو السعودية في العام ‪ .2007‬وبعدها بعام واحد‪،‬‬ ‫إبتعثتني شركة أرامكو لاللتحاق بجامعة بيرمنجهام البريطانية‪،‬‬ ‫لدراسة البكالوريوس في الهندسة الميكانيكية‪.‬‬ ‫ويضيف عبدالرحمن‪" :‬بعد تخرجي من مرحلة البكالوريوس‪،‬‬ ‫عدت للعمل مرة أخرى في شركة أرامكو كمتدرب في قطاع‬ ‫التشغيل الهندسي لمعمل تكرير الزيت الخام‪ .‬وخالل هذه‬ ‫السنة‪ ،‬تم ترشيح اسمي إلكمال دراستي الجامعية لدرجة‬ ‫الماجستير‪.‬‬ ‫وأشارعبدالرحمن بأن إختياره لكاوست‪ ،‬كان لسببين رئيسيين‬ ‫هما‪ً :‬‬ ‫أوال‪ ،‬التوجه والرؤية المستقبلية المشتركة بين كاوست‬ ‫وأرامكو في دعم تطور المملكة ‪ ،‬حيث أراد أن يكون له‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وثانيا‪ ،‬هو أن كاوست تتمتع بسمعة‬ ‫دورا في هذه الرؤية؛‬

‫خريج ماجستير‬ ‫في الهندســة الميكانيكية‬

‫سواء من حيث جودة‬ ‫مقارنة بالجامعات العالمية‪،‬‬ ‫عال‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫طيبة ومستوى ٍ‬ ‫مرافقها ومختبراتها‪ ،‬أو الكفاءات العلمية العالمية التي تحتضنها‪ ،‬األمر‬ ‫الذي يجعل منها بيئة خصبة للبحوث العلمية‪.‬‬ ‫وبعد أن أنهى عبدالرحمن دراسة الماجستير‪ ،‬أرسلته أرامكو للعمل في‬ ‫أحد أصعب معاملها وأكثرها تحد من الناحية البيئية‪ ،‬أال وهو منصة‬ ‫شيبة إلنتاج البترول الخام في صحراء الربع الخالي‪ .‬وبعدها بعام واحد‪،‬‬ ‫مجددا‪ ،‬من قبل إدارة الشركة‪ ،‬إلكمال دراساته‬ ‫تم ترشيح عبدالرحمن‬ ‫ً‬ ‫العليا‪ .‬فقرر حينها متابعة دراسة الدكتوراة في الهندسة الميكانيكية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جيدا بكفاءتها العالية‪.‬‬ ‫في كاوست‪،‬‬ ‫نظرا لتجربته السابقة فيها ولعلمه ً‬ ‫والتحق بها عام ‪.2016‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا على البحوث العلمية في مركز‬ ‫يعمل طالب الدكتوراة عبدالرحمن‬ ‫االحتراق النظيف في كاوست‪ ،‬تحت إشراف رئيس المركز‪ ،‬البروفيسور‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫وتركز أبحاثه على عملية احتراق الوقود‪ ،‬للبحث في إمكانية‬ ‫وليام روبرت‪.‬‬ ‫احتراق المواد الحاملة لعنصر الهيدروجين‪ ،‬لتشغيل التوربينات الغازية‬ ‫لتوليد الكهرباء‪.‬‬ ‫وعبر عبدالرحمن عن إمتنانه الكبير لجميع الفرص التي قدمتها له‬ ‫كاوست‪ ،‬إذ وفرت له فرص عدة إلجراء الكثير من التجارب العلمية تحت‬ ‫اشراف كادر تعليمي متميز‪ ،‬باإلضافة إلى اإلندماج مع مجتمع علمي‬ ‫رفيع المستوى من مختلف أنحاء العالم‪ .‬ويختتم عبدالرحم قائال‪" :‬هذه‬ ‫األمور تشعرك بالفخر واإلعتزاز بوجود جامعة بهذا المستوى العالمي‬ ‫على أرض الوطن‪ .‬ولزمالئي الطلبة أقول "كاوست لديها الكثير لتعطيه‪،‬‬ ‫ال تضيعوا الفرصة"‪.‬‬

‫شركة "آيريس"‬ ‫تحتل المركز الثالث في منافسة ‪ Startup Istanbul‬العالمية‬

‫حازت "آيريس"‪ ،‬الشركة الناشئة في‬ ‫كاوست والمعنية بتطوير تقنيات لتحويل‬ ‫النوافذ إلى ألواح شمسية تنتج طاقة‬ ‫منخفضة التكلفة وتحجب حرارة الشمس‪،‬‬ ‫على المركز الثالث‪ ,‬من بين أكثر من‬ ‫‪ 500‬شركة ناشئة من حوالي ‪ 80‬دولة‬ ‫مشاركة في المؤتمر والمعرض العالمي‬ ‫للشركات الناشئة (‪,)Startup Istanbul‬‬ ‫الذي عقد في مدينة إسطنبول التركية‬ ‫في الفترة بين ‪ 22-19‬أكتوبر‪ .‬كما حلت‬ ‫شركتا "أويسيس" و"يونيت أكس"‪ ،‬أيضا‬

‫ماتياس‬ ‫مولر‬ ‫جائــزة أفضــل ورقة بحثية عن أبحاث الطائرات‬ ‫بدون طيار(الدرونز)‬

‫فــاز طالب الدكتوراة ماتياس مولر من‬ ‫جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫(كاوســت)‪ ،‬بجائزة أفضل ورقة بحثية‬ ‫وعرض تقديمي في ورشــة العمل الدولية‬ ‫الثانية حول رؤية الحاســب اآللي للطائرات‬ ‫بــدون طيار (‪ ،)UAVs‬التي عقدت في‬ ‫شــهر سبتمبر ‪ 2018‬ضمن جدول االعمال‬ ‫الختامية للمؤتمر األوروبي الخامس عشــر‬ ‫حول ورش عمل رؤية الحاســب اآللي في‬ ‫مدينة ميونخ األلمانية‪.‬‬

‫وعبــر مولر الــذي يعمل في مختبر تحليل‬ ‫الصور والفيديو في كاوســت تحت‬ ‫إشــراف األستاذ المشارك برنارد غانم‪،‬‬ ‫عن ســعادته بتمثيل الجامعة بهذا اإلنجاز‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قائال‪ ":‬تشــرفت بتمثيل كاوست في هذا‬ ‫الحدث العالمي رفيع المســتوى وبالفوز‬ ‫بجائــزة أفضل ورقة بحثية‪ .‬وأنا ممتن‬ ‫ـدا لزمالئي الذين تعاونوا معي في‬ ‫جـ ً‬ ‫هذا المشــروع واخص بالذكر البروفيسور‬ ‫برنارد غانم"‪.‬‬

‫وتناولــت ورقة ماتياس البحثية موضوع‬ ‫تعليم طائــرة الدرونز التنقل عبر مضمار‬ ‫السباق بشــكل مستقل باستخدام الرؤية‬ ‫الحاســوبية ‪ /‬والتعليم اآللي من خالل‬ ‫المحاكاة‪ .‬وشــاركه في بحثه كل من‬ ‫زمالئه فينســنت كاسير‪ ،‬ونيل سميث‪،‬‬ ‫ودومينيك ميتشــل والبروفيسور غانم‪.‬‬

‫أقيــم مؤتمر ‪ Falling Walls‬الدولي‬ ‫لهذا العــام‪ ،‬في مدينة برلين األلمانية‬ ‫بتاريــخ ‪ 8‬نوفمبر ‪ .2018‬ويعتبر هذا‬ ‫المؤتمر مســابقة سنوية للعلماء الشباب‬ ‫والمبتكريــن ورواد األعمال والمفكرين‬ ‫المبدعيــن‪ ،‬ومنصة فريدة لطرح األفكار‬ ‫المتميــزة القادرة على تغيير العالم‪.‬‬

‫وتناول بحث زانغ مادة الهالم المائي‬ ‫(الهيدروجل) األسود‪ ،‬ذو خصائص فريدة‬ ‫في التمدد واإلصالح الذاتي والكشف‬ ‫عن تعابير الوجه‪ .‬كما عرضت الطالبة‬ ‫حنان محمد عملها عن تطوير ثوري لتقنية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حلوال لمشكلة‬ ‫تخزين البيانات‪ ،‬والذي يضع‬ ‫المساحات والطاقة في مراكز البيانات‪.‬‬

‫وتعزيـ ً‬ ‫ـزا لحضورها الدولي في المحافل‬ ‫العلميــة الدولية المهمة‪ ،‬مثل كل من‬ ‫طالبــة الدكتوراه حنان محمد‪ ،‬وزميل ما‬ ‫بعــد الدكتوراه يي‪-‬زو زانغ خير تمثيل‪،‬‬ ‫عرضوا خاللهــا أبحاثهما االبتكارية على‬ ‫لجنة تحكيم رفيعة المســتوى‪ ،‬تضم خبراء‬ ‫من األوســاط األكاديمية ورجال األعمال‬ ‫والشخصيات العامة‪.‬‬

‫واختيرت حنان وزانغ للمشــاركة في هذا‬ ‫المؤتمــر بعد فوزهما في التصفيات‬ ‫النهائية لمســابقة مختبر ‪Falling‬‬ ‫‪ Walls‬في الحرم الجامعي في ســبتمبر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫طالبا‬ ‫الماضي‪ ،‬والتي شــارك فيها ‪15‬‬ ‫وباحثـ ًـا تحت رعاية مكتب التطوير‬ ‫المهني التابع لشــؤون الدراسات العليا‬ ‫في الجامعة‪.‬‬

‫وســيعود مؤتمر ‪ Falling Walls‬الدولي‬ ‫العام القادم في شــهر أغسطس ‪،2019‬‬ ‫وســيكون طلبة وباحثي كاوست في‬ ‫مقدمة المشــاركين في هذا الحدث‬ ‫العلمي المتميز‪.‬‬

‫تكريم علماء كاوست‬

‫أميرة العازمي‬ ‫جائــزة أفضــل ملصق بحثي في ندوة الجمعية‬ ‫الملكية للكيمياء‬

‫فازت أميرة ســلمان العازمي‪ ،‬طالبة‬ ‫الدكتــوراة في جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أخيرا بجائزة‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية (كاوســت)‪،‬‬ ‫أفضــل ملصــق بحثي في ندوة تقنية النانو‬ ‫للطاقــة والبيئة ‪ 2018‬والتي عقدت‬ ‫في العاصمــة البريطانية لندن في الفترة‬ ‫من ‪ 6‬إلى ‪ 7‬ســبتمبر‪ ،‬برعاية مجموعة‬ ‫العلوم النانويــة والتقنية النانوية التابعة‬ ‫للجمعيــة الملكية للكيمياء (‪ .)RSC‬حيث‬ ‫ركــزت الندوة على التطورات األخيرة في‬ ‫الدراسات األساســية لتقنية النانو‪ ،‬وتطوير‬ ‫المواد الجديدة وهندســة المفاعالت‪.‬‬ ‫وقد فازت الطالبة أميرة التي يشــرف‬ ‫عليها البروفيســور بيدرو دا كوستا‪ ،‬األستاذ‬ ‫في مختبــر البنية النانوية للكربون في‬

‫كاوســت‪ ،‬بجائزة أفضل ملصق لعرضها‬ ‫التقديمي عن تطوير مركبات أكســيد‬ ‫ملونة في التصوير‬ ‫الجرافيــن كمواد ِّ‬ ‫بالرنين المغناطيسي‪.‬‬ ‫أميرة العازمي ‪-‬التي ســتتخرج من‬ ‫كاوســت في ديسمبر ‪- 2018‬أكملت‬ ‫درجة الماجســتير في الكيمياء (برنامج‬ ‫العلوم الكيميائية) في كاوســت عام‬ ‫‪ 2014‬ودرجــة البكالوريوس في الكيمياء‬ ‫مــن جامعة الملك فيصل في عام ‪،2009‬‬ ‫حاليا كمحاضرة في جامعة‬ ‫وتعمــل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حفر الباطن‪ .‬وتركــز اهتماماتها البحثية‬ ‫الحاليــة في جامعة الملك عبداهلل على‬ ‫فهم الجوانب األساســية لتركيب أكسيد‬ ‫الجرافيت (‪ )GO‬وأكســيد الجرافيت‬

‫المخفــف (‪ ،)rGO‬وكيف تؤثر هذه النتائج‬ ‫على وظيفتها كمواد نشــطة في‬ ‫أنواع مختلفة مــن التطبيقات المقترحة‪.‬‬ ‫كما تدرس أميرة عملية إضافة أكســيد‬ ‫الجرافيــت المخفف (‪ )rGO‬لألنظمة‬ ‫أو المواد المصممة لالســتخدام في‬ ‫المكثفــات الفائقة‪ ،‬وعملية عزل ثاني‬ ‫أكســيد الكربون‪ ،‬والتحليل الكهربائي‪.‬‬ ‫تقول أميرة العازمي‪" :‬أنا مســرورة‬ ‫جدا بمشــاركتي والفوز بجائزة أفضل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ملصق في نــدوة تقنية النانو للطاقة‬ ‫والبيئة ‪ .2018‬وأود أن اشــكر مشرفي‬ ‫البروفيســور بيدرو دا كوستا‪ ،‬لدعمه‬ ‫المســتمر وتشجيعه‪ ،‬ومنحني الفرصة‬ ‫للعمل في هذا المشــروع "‪.‬‬

‫يكونوا قد ســبق لهم القيام بالعديد من‬ ‫عمليات الغوص‪.‬‬ ‫وال تنحصر أنشــطة النادي على التصوير‬ ‫تحت الماء فقط‪ .‬ففي الفصل الدراســي‬ ‫درســا في التصوير‬ ‫األخير‪ ،‬حضر األعضاء ً‬ ‫الفوتوغرافــي وتعلموا عن اإلعدادات‬ ‫األساســية للكاميرات وضبط الصور‬ ‫ومعالجتهــا‪ .‬كما ّ‬ ‫أيضا‬ ‫نظمت المجموعة ً‬ ‫ليلة مســابقات ثقافية لتحدي معرفتهم‬ ‫أيضا سلســلة‬ ‫بالبحار والمحيطات‪ ،‬وبدأوا ً‬ ‫مــن المحاضرات بعنوان "الغوص"‬ ‫لمناقشــة مواضيع الحياة البحرية‪.‬‬ ‫أيضا دورات تدريبية‬ ‫كما تنظــم المجموعة ً‬ ‫ورحــات ميدانية في البحر األحمر‪ ،‬حيث‬ ‫يذهب أعضاء النادي إلى مناطق الشــعاب‬ ‫المرجانية التي تبعد حوالي ســاعة من‬ ‫ســاحل جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنيــة‪ ،‬باإلضافة الى زيارة منطقة البحر‬ ‫األحمــر بالقرب من مدينة جدة‪ ،‬أو القيام‬ ‫برحالت استكشــافية لمناطق أخرى من‬ ‫المملكة لعدة أيام‪.‬‬

‫وفــي أثناء رحالت الغوص‪ ،‬تقوم‬ ‫المجموعــة بتنظيم أعضائها بحيث‬ ‫يكون ضمن كل فريق أشــخاص من‬ ‫ذوي الخبرة كي يشــاركوا معرفتهم‬ ‫وخبراتهــم مع األعضاء األقل خبرة‪.‬‬ ‫ويســتخدم أعضاء المجموعة كاميرتين‬ ‫رقميتيــن مدمجتين من نوع (‪Canon‬‬ ‫‪ )G12s‬باإلضافــة إلى كاميرا ‪DSLR‬‬ ‫واحــدة من نوع (كانون ‪ ،)7D‬وجميعها‬ ‫مجهزة للعمل تحت الماء مع العدســات‬ ‫اإلضافيــة وكافة المعدات الالزمة‪.‬‬

‫تتطلــع مجموعة نادي التصوير‬ ‫الفوتوغرافــي تحت الماء الى مقابلة‬ ‫أي شــخص مهتم باالنضمام لها وال‬ ‫تعتبــر الخبرة في الغوص أو البيولوجيا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مطلبا‬ ‫البحريــة أو التصوير الفوتوغرافي‬ ‫لقبول العضوية‪.‬‬

‫الغوص تحت الماء‬ ‫مع نادي التصوير‬ ‫الفوتوغرافي‬

‫بــدأت مجموعة من طلبة جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبد اهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوســت)‪،‬‬ ‫بهوايــة الغوص في البحر األحمر والتقاط‬ ‫الصور ومقاطــع الفيديو للحياة البحرية‬ ‫المدهشــة في أعماقه‪ .‬وتمكن الطلبة‬ ‫من تأســيس نادي خاص لهواة تصوير‬ ‫الحياة البحرية مســتعينين بمعدات‬ ‫كاوســت القديمة والخاصة بالتصوير‬ ‫تحت الماء‪.‬‬ ‫يبلــغ مجموع أعضاء نادي التصوير‬ ‫الفوتوغرافــي تحت الماء في الجامعة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫طالبا وطالبة‪ .‬ويعد‬ ‫ثمانية وعشــرين‬ ‫ً‬ ‫سهال‪ ،‬كل ما‬ ‫اإلنتســاب إلى النادي‬ ‫يتطلبــه األمر‪ ،‬حضور العضو اجتماعين‬ ‫أو حدثين على األقل كل فصل دراســي‬ ‫والمشــاركة في التدريب على السباحة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فضال عن التدرب على‬ ‫والغــوص‪ ،‬هذا‬ ‫اســتخدام معدات التصوير الفوتوغرافي‪.‬‬ ‫ويجب علــى الطلبة الراغبين في االلتحاق‬ ‫في النادي أن يتحلوا بالثقة عند الســباحة‬ ‫والغــوص في المياه المفتوحة وأن‬

‫يوم بفضل الدعم الذي قدمه لي سـ ً‬ ‫ـابقا‬ ‫برنامج كاوســت للطلبة الموهوبين‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا‬ ‫والمــوارد الهائلة التي توفرها‬ ‫جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية"‪.‬‬

‫ً‬ ‫حاليا في‬ ‫خريجــي ‪ ،KGSP‬والذي يدرس‬ ‫كاوســت لنيل شهادة الماجستير في‬ ‫علوم الكمبيوتر‪ ،‬وياســمين نجم‪ ،‬طالبة‬ ‫الدكتوراة في مجال العلوم والهندســة‬ ‫البيئية في كاوســت‪ ،‬األثر والفضل الكبير‬ ‫لبرنامج كاوســت للطلبة الموهوبين في‬ ‫تحقيق نجاحاتهما الحالية‪ ،‬وكيف يشــعران‬ ‫رد الجميل للمملكة ولكاوســت على‬ ‫حيال ّ‬ ‫حد سواء‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫من جهته‪ ،‬قال عبداإلله أبوالشعور‪" :‬عندما‬ ‫ألقيت كلمة لجنة توجيه طلبة برنامج‬ ‫‪ KGSP‬خالل اجتماع طلبة البرنامج للعام‬ ‫‪ 2018‬في مدينة فينيكس بوالية أريزونا‪،‬‬ ‫مناسبة بالنسبة لي للتعبير‬ ‫كانت اللحظة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عن شغفي وإخالصي للبرنامج‪ ،‬ولتشجيع‬ ‫مشاركة‬ ‫زمالئي في البرنامج ليكونوا أكثر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خاصة وأن البرنامج يجمعنا‬ ‫في البرنامج‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كعائلة واحدة‪ ،‬ويقوم على عطاءتنا‬ ‫ومساهماتنا في هذا البرنامج"‪.‬‬ ‫واعتبرت ياســمين نجم درجة البكالوريوس‬ ‫التــي حصلت عليها من كلية لندن‬ ‫الجامعيــة ‪ UCL‬في المملكة المتحدة‪،‬‬

‫بمثابــة انطالقة رحلة مثيرة من اللحظات‬ ‫الســعيدة والناجحة والمخيفة والمفعمة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫معا‪ .‬وفي هذا السياق‬ ‫بالمشــاعر بآن‬ ‫قالت‪" :‬فكرت لنفســي بأنني أريد تغيير‬ ‫دراســتي‪ .‬لكن المستشارين في برنامج‬ ‫كاوســت للطلبة الموهوبين كانوا‬ ‫داعميــن لي للغاية‪ ،‬لذا كانت فصول‬ ‫الصيــف مليئة بفرص النمو والتطوير في‬ ‫جميــع المجاالت‪ ،‬إذ أتيحت لي فرصة‬ ‫التطــوع في واحدة من أكبر المنظمات‬ ‫الخيريــة‪ ،‬واالنضمام إلى مجموعة‬ ‫مختبريــة‪ ،‬وااللتحاق بدورات تعليمية من‬ ‫خارج تخصصي وجامعتي‪ ،‬كما درســت‬ ‫لغة ثالثة‪ .‬وســاعدت هذه األنشطة‬ ‫الصيفيــة في ملء وقتي في المملكة‬ ‫المتحــدة‪ ،‬وخلق تجربة جامعية أفضل"‪.‬‬ ‫وفــي حديثه عن أهدافه‪ ،‬قال عبداإلله‬ ‫أبوالشــعور‪" :‬كمتخصص في علوم‬ ‫الكمبيوتــر‪ ،‬تدور أهدافي الطويلة األمد‪،‬‬ ‫حول تمكين الشــباب السعودي من‬ ‫المهــارات العلمية والبحثية المهمة‪،‬‬ ‫خاصة فــي مجال علوم الكمبيوتر‪ .‬وها‬ ‫أنــا أقترب من تحقيق هذا الهدف كل‬

‫أن كونها واحدة من‬ ‫وتعتبر ياســمين نجم ّ‬ ‫أوائل الطلبة الملتحقين ببرنامج كاوســت‬ ‫للطلبــة الموهوبين في العام ‪،2008‬‬ ‫أي قبــل افتتاح الجامعة‪ ،‬األمر الذي‬ ‫تكن المزيد من المشــاعر حيال هذا‬ ‫يجعلها‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫البرنامج‪ ،‬وتقول‪" :‬شــهدت تطور البرنامج‬ ‫ونموه على مر الســنين‪ .‬واليوم‪ ،‬وبعد‬ ‫متابعتــي البرامج الثالثة التي يمكنني‬ ‫الحصــول عليها‪ ،‬أعتقد أنني مدينة‬ ‫بالكثيــر لجامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وفروه‬ ‫والتقنيــة وللمملكة‪،‬‬ ‫نظرا لما ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قدما‬ ‫لــي من األدوات الضرورية للمضي‬ ‫والنجاح في المرحلة التالية من مســيرتي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قريبا إلى شركة نفط‬ ‫المهنية‪ .‬ســأنضم‬ ‫وغاز شــهيرة‪ ،‬كعالمة أولى في قسم‬ ‫األبحــاث والتطوير في وادي الظهران‬ ‫ـخر جميع مهاراتي‬ ‫للتقنية؛ حيث آمل أن أسـ ّ‬ ‫العلمية والشــخصية التي اكتسبتها‬ ‫تطور‬ ‫فــي حياتي‪ ،‬لوضع بصماتي في‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المملكة ومســتقبلها الواعد"‪.‬‬ ‫واختتم عبداإلله أبوالشــعور حديثه قائال‪:‬‬ ‫"بالنســبة لي فإن برنامج كاوست للطلبة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الموهوبين ّ‬ ‫رمزا للفرصة الســانحة‪،‬‬ ‫يمثل‬ ‫ونقطــة انطالق إلى عالم من االحتماالت‪.‬‬ ‫لقــد قــرر طلبة البرنامج أن يمضوا في هذا‬ ‫المســار الصعب والمثير‪ ،‬كجزء من تحقيق‬ ‫أهدافهم وأحالمهم النهائية"‪.‬‬ ‫بقلــم ديفيد مورفي‪ ،‬أخبار جامعة‬ ‫الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬

‫خريجو برنامج كاوست للطلبة‬ ‫الموهوبين يصيغون النجاح بكلماتهم‬ ‫من خالل تجربتهم ورحلتهم‬ ‫منــذ إنطالقه في العام ‪،2008‬‬ ‫منــح برنامج جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية (كاوســت) للطلبة‬ ‫الموهوبيــن(‪ , )KGSP‬خريجي المدارس‬ ‫الثانوية الســعوديين الموهوبين‪ ،‬فرصة‬ ‫بجامعات‬ ‫لتحقيــق النجاح عبر إلحاقهم‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫ـات علمية وأكاديمية رائدة في‬ ‫ومؤسسـ ٍ‬ ‫الواليات المتحدة‪ .‬فبرنامج كاوســت‬ ‫للطلبــة الموهوبين‪ ،‬يعمل على إعداد‬ ‫الطلبة المشــاركين لمتابعة دراستهم‬ ‫والحصول على درجات الماجســتير‬ ‫والدكتوراة من كاوســت‪ ،‬بهدف‬ ‫إثــراء التركيب الثقافي والفكري‬ ‫للجامعة وللمملكة‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫غالبا ما يجد خريجو برنامج كاوســت‬ ‫للطلبة الموهوبين أنفســهم‪ ،‬في موضع‬ ‫طلب متزايد في األوســاط األكاديمية‬ ‫حد ســواء‪ ،‬بعد تخرجهم‬ ‫والصناعة على ّ‬ ‫مــن أكاديمياتهم في الواليات المتحدة‪.‬‬ ‫ففي الســنوات الماضية‪ ،‬حصل خريجو‬ ‫متميزة في‬ ‫البرنامــج على وظائف تدريب‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫شــركات مرموقة كـ غوغل (‪،)Google‬‬ ‫و شـ�ركة داو كيميكال( (�‪Dow Chemi‬‬ ‫‪ ،)cal‬وتيســا (‪ ،)Tesla‬وياهو (‪،)Yahoo‬‬ ‫وأرامكو الســعودية وغيرها‪ .‬كما تابع‬ ‫المهنية‪ ،‬عبر‬ ‫العديد منهم مســيرتهم‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫إنشــاء أعمالهم ومشاريعهم الخاصة‪ ،‬مثل‬ ‫"أنظمة المها" التي تســتخدم تقنيات‬ ‫إنترنت األشياء (‪)Internet-of-Things‬‬ ‫لرصد الوضع الصحي للمواشــي‪ ،‬وشركة‬ ‫"مــزن" لتقنية وخدمات المعلومات‪.‬‬ ‫وفــي حديــث مع إثنين من خريجي برنامج‬ ‫كاوســت للطلبة الموهوبين‪ ،‬ناقش‬ ‫عبداإلله أبو الشــعور‪ ،‬رئيس جمعية‬

‫لعدة أســباب منها‪ ،‬أهمها التغير المناخي‬ ‫الذي أدى بدوره إلى خســائر في الحصاد‬ ‫بلغــت ‪ ٪ 60‬تقريبــا من إجمالي اإلنتاجية‪.‬‬ ‫ويوضــح الدكتــور ماجد عن بحثه المتعلق‬ ‫فــي دور العوامل الحيوية في تحمل‬ ‫النباتات لإلجهاد‪ ،‬وكيف يســاعد هذا‬ ‫في زيــادة المحاصيل في جميع أنحاء‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قائال‪ " :‬في هذه الدراســة‪ ،‬تم‬ ‫العالم‪،‬‬ ‫عزل وتعريف إحدى ســاالت البكتيريا‬ ‫انتروبكتــر ‪ SA187-‬من ميكروبات‬‫الريزوســفير‪ ،‬التي تعيش داخل العقد‬ ‫الجذرية لنبــات النيلة الصحرواية‪ .‬والجدير‬ ‫بالذكــر ان هــذا النبات ينمو في منطقة‬ ‫جيزان الجنوبية ومناطق اخرى في شــبه‬ ‫الجزيرة العربية‪ ،‬ووجدنا ان اســتخدام هذه‬ ‫البكتيريــا تحت ظروف الزراعة الصحراوية‬ ‫يزيد انتاجيه المحاصيل الحقلية‪ .‬وإســتخدام‬

‫الحلول و األبحاث‬ ‫ويشــير الدكتور ماجد أنه خالل السنوات‬ ‫األربع الماضية‪ ،‬تم إنشــاء بنك يحتوي‬ ‫علي الســاالت البكتيرية المعزولة من‬ ‫جذورالنباتــات الصحراوية المختلفة من‬ ‫شــبة الجزيرة العربية والمناطق المجاورة‪.‬‬ ‫ويعــد هذا البنك مــن أكبر البنوك البكتيرية‬ ‫المتخصصــة‪ ،‬وقد يكون الوحيد في‬ ‫الســعودية الذي يحتوي على أكثر من‬ ‫معرفة‪ .‬ويمكن في هذا‬ ‫‪ 2,500‬ســاله‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫البنك الحلول لمشــاكل التربة والزراعة‬ ‫الصحراوية‪ ،‬وإســتخراج أجيال جديدة‬ ‫من المضــادات الحيوية وغيرها الكثير‪.‬‬ ‫وقام الفريــق البحثي بتعريف وتوصيف‬ ‫الســاالت البكترية‪ ،‬واختبار هذه البكتيريا‬ ‫على مســاعدة النباتات لتحمل ظروف‬ ‫اإلجهــاد داخل المعامل إلختيار األفضل‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مبهرا لبعض‬ ‫نجاحا‬ ‫و أظهــرت لنــا النتائج‬

‫تحويــل التكنولوجيا إلى منتج‬ ‫يشــرح الدكتور ماجد عن أن نقل هذه‬ ‫التكنولوجيــا إلى منتج‪ ،‬يحتاج إلى عدة‬ ‫محــاور‪ ،‬ويقول‪" :‬أولها حماية حق الملكية‬ ‫الفكرية في اســتخدام هذه السالالت‪ ،‬و‬ ‫إعداد النمــوذج المبدئي للمنتج‪ ،‬ثم إختبار‬ ‫النموذج على أرض الواقع بواســطة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وأخيرا تسويق‬ ‫مزارعين في الســعودية‪،‬‬ ‫المنتج عن طريق تكوين شــركة مبتدئة"‪.‬‬ ‫وتشــير النتائج الحالية‪ ،‬التي تمت في‬ ‫المملكة‪ ،‬إلى أنه يمكن المســاهمة‬ ‫فــي زياده االنتاج الزراعي من خالل‬ ‫إستخدام الســاالت البكتيريا المنتخبة‪،‬‬ ‫الذي من شــأنه أن يؤدي إلى زيادة‬ ‫الرقعة الزراعيــة‪ ،‬مما ينعكس على الناتج‬ ‫المحلــي‪ .‬األمر الذي يتوافق مع رؤية‬ ‫المملكة ‪ 2030‬في ترشــيد إستخدام‬

‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫إيجابيا في دورة حياة النبات من خالل‬ ‫دورا‬ ‫تلعب الميكروبات‬ ‫إذابة وتجهيز العناصر المعدنية للنباتات‪ ،‬وزيادة مناعتها ضد‬

‫البكتيريا والفطريات الممرضة‪ .‬وأظهرت األبحاث أن منطقة الريزوسفير‬ ‫غنيه بالتنوع الميكروبي‪.".‬‬

‫الميكروبات الريزوســفير هذه يعد ثورة‬ ‫جديدة في الزراعة اآلمنة‪ ،‬إذ أنها ســوف‬ ‫ً‬ ‫طرقا غيــر مكلفه وصديقة للبيئة‪،‬‬ ‫تمثــل‬ ‫وستســاعد المزارع الفقير في أنحاء العالم‬ ‫على تحسين الزراعة"‪.‬‬ ‫ميكروبات (ريزوســفير) و تأثيرها‬ ‫على النباتات‬ ‫وفي تعريفه لميكروبات الريزوســفير‪،‬‬ ‫يقول الدكتور ماجد‪" :‬إن الريزوســفير‬ ‫هــي المنطقة المالصقة لجذور النباتات‪،‬‬ ‫وفيها تنمــو ميكروبات التربة‪ ،‬حيث تلعب‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫إيجابيا في دورة حياة‬ ‫دورا‬ ‫الميكروبــات‬ ‫النبــات من خالل إذابة وتجهيز العناصر‬ ‫المعدنيــة للنباتات‪ ،‬وزيادة مناعتها ضد‬ ‫البكتيريــا والفطريات الممرضة‪ .‬وأظهرت‬ ‫األبحاث أن منطقة الريزوســفير غنيه‬ ‫بالتنوع الميكروبي‪.‬‬

‫ويوضح الدكتور ماجد "في بداية هذا‬ ‫العام‪ ،‬تم التواصل مع أكثر من شركة‬ ‫زارعية في المملكة لمعرفة متتطلبات‬ ‫والمشاكل التي تواجه المزارع السعودي‬ ‫من ناحية المياة والتربة واألمراض‬ ‫الموسمية للنباتات‪ ،‬و تم عقد إتفاق مع‬ ‫إحدى الشركات لعمل عدة تجارب ميدانية‬ ‫لبعض السالالت على عدد من المحاصيل‬ ‫الزراعية في مزارع الشركة"‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قائال " كباحثين‪،‬‬ ‫وإختتــم الدكتور حديثه‪،‬‬ ‫نحن دائمـ ًـا مدفوعون بفضولنا‪ ،‬ونتائج‬ ‫التجارب تقدم لنا اإلجابات ‪ -‬ســواء إيجابية‬ ‫أو ســلبية ‪ -‬وقد تكون غير نهائية‪ ،‬إال أنها‬ ‫دائما تؤدي إلى المزيد من األســئلة التي‬ ‫توســع بحثنا لإلجابة عليها"‪.‬‬ ‫‪21‬‬

‫أبحاث علمية‬ ‫تركز على تحقيق‬ ‫األمن الغذائي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا وظيفة عالم‬ ‫يشــغل ماجد محمد عبدالحليم ســعد‪،‬‬ ‫أبحاث في مبادرة الزراعة الصحراوية التابع لقســم‬ ‫العلوم والهندســة البيولوجيــة والبيئية في جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبد اهلل عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوســت)‪.‬‬ ‫وفي حديثه عن ذكريات رحلته الدراســية‪ ،‬يقول الدكتور‬ ‫ماجد " أتممت دراســه البكالوريوس والماجســتير في‬ ‫الكيميــاء الحيوية فــي كلية العلوم في جامعة عين‬ ‫شــمس‪ ،‬في مصر‪ .‬وحصلت على درجة الدكتوراة في‬ ‫علــم األحياء الجزيئيــة من كليه العلوم من جامعة‬ ‫جنيف‪ ،‬في سويســرا‪ .‬واتممت عدد من دراســات ما بعد‬ ‫الدكتــوراة (‪ )Postdoctoral‬في عدد من المعاهد‬ ‫والجامعــات البحثية فــي كل من المانيا‪ ،‬والمملكة‬ ‫المتحدة وفرنســا و أخيرها في سويسرا‪.‬‬ ‫وعن انضمامه إلى كاوســت‪ ،‬يقول ماجد‪" :‬يرجع اختياري‬ ‫لإلنضمام إلى كاوســت لعدة اســباب‪ .‬فعلى المستوي‬ ‫الشــخصي‪ ،‬كنت ابحث عن بيئه مناســبة لي وألسرتي‪،‬‬ ‫والعيــش في مجتمع متحضــر محب للبيئة ومتنوع وغني‬ ‫باإلرث الثقافي والحضاري‪ .‬أما على المســتوى المهني‪،‬‬ ‫فكنت أبحث عن مكان يمكن أن يســاعدني على‬ ‫اإلســتفادة وتطبيق أبحاثــي العلمية والعملية في مجال‬ ‫الزراعة‪ .‬وهذا ما وجدته في كاوســت"‪.‬‬ ‫ويشــرح الدكتور ماجد أن جميــع أبحاثه العلمية تتمحور‬ ‫حول ثالثة نقاط اساســية‪ ،‬وهي‪ :‬الوراثة الميكروبية‪،‬‬ ‫والتكيــف البكتيري مع الظــروف البيئيه المختلفة‪،‬‬ ‫والعالقــة بين األحيــاء الدقيقة والكائنات الحية‪ ،‬مع‬ ‫التركيزعلــى العالقة بيــن البكتيريا والنباتات والحوارات‬ ‫الجزيئية بينهم‪.‬‬ ‫التركيــز على جانب األمن الغذائي العالمي‬ ‫ويقول الدكتور ماجد‪" :‬في الحقيقة‪ ،‬هناك ســبب‬ ‫جوهري لتركيزي على إســتحداث طرق غير تقليدية‬ ‫لتوفيــر الغــذاء اآلمن للعالم‪ ،‬أال وهو أنه بالرغم من‬ ‫كل التقدم المذهل التي حققته البشــرية في معظم‬ ‫مجاالت العلم والتكنولوجيا‪ ،‬إال أن الكثير من ســكان‬ ‫األرض ال يزالــوا يعانــون من الجوع والفقر‪ .‬ففي العام‬ ‫الماضــي‪ ،‬أعلنــت منظمة األغذية والزراعة (الفاو) أن عدد‬ ‫الجيــاع فــي العالم قد ارتفع بمقدار ‪ 38‬مليون‪ ،‬وذلك‬

‫العلوم والتقنية‪ ،‬من الضروري أن نســعى‪ ،‬ليس فقط‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا إلى تبني‬ ‫إلــى تطوير تقنيات جديــدة ومبتكرة‪ ،‬بل‬ ‫واعتماد تقنيات ناشــئة ذات قيمة كبيــرة لطلبتنا وخريجينا‪.‬‬ ‫ويســرنا أن نتعاون مع ليرنيغ ماشــين لالستفادة من‬ ‫الخصائــص العديدة التي توفرها تقنية بلوك تشــين في‬ ‫مجال إصدار الشــهادات الرقمية‪ ،‬والتي من شــأنها تسهيل‬ ‫عملية إصدار ســجالت آمنة وســهلة ومعتمدة‪ ،‬يسهل‬ ‫التحقق منها‪ ،‬لخريجينا المســتقبليين"‪.‬‬ ‫من جهته‪ ،‬علق ســكوت براي‪ ،‬أمين ســجالت الطلبة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قائال‪" :‬تأتي هذه االتفاقية في إطار‬ ‫في كاوســت‪،‬‬ ‫اعتمــاد الجامعة ألحدث التقنيات لتعزيز تجربة كاوســت‬ ‫الفريــدة لطلبتنا وخريجينا‪ ،‬والتي من شــأنها أن تضفي‬ ‫قيمــة أكبر علــى مجموعة الخدمات الرقمية التي‬ ‫توفرها الجامعة‪ .‬وبفضل هذه التقنية‪ ،‬ســيتمكن‬ ‫مكتب ســجالت الطلبة في كاوســت‪ ،‬من أن يوفر‬ ‫خدمة اعتماد آمنة وســهلة للشــهادات الجامعية‪،‬‬ ‫تمامـ ًـا كتلك المعتمــدة في أفضل الجامعات كمعهد‬ ‫ماساتشوســتس للتكنولوجيا وستانفورد"‪.‬‬ ‫وقال محمد حلواني‪ ،‬مدير في قســم تكنولوجيا‬ ‫المعلومات الناشــئة واالستراتيجية واألداء في‬ ‫كاوســت‪" :‬إنها فرصة مميزة لكاوســت ألن تتبنى‬ ‫تقنية بلوك ســيرت‪ .‬إن هذه النقلة النوعية من شــأنها‬ ‫أن تضــع الجامعــة في مقدمة التحول الرقمي الذي‬ ‫تشــهده المملكة‪ ،‬في إطار جهودها العتماد مفهوم‬ ‫المصادقــة الرقميــة‪ .‬ونهدف من خالل هذه االتفاقية‬ ‫إلى رســم مالمح االســتراتيجية المستقبلية لكاوست في‬ ‫اســتخدامات تقنية بلوك تشــين‪ ،‬وغيرها من التقنيات‬ ‫الناشــئة والمبتكرة التي تتوافق مع رؤية الجامعة‬ ‫وتســاهم في تحقيق رؤية المملكة ‪."2030‬‬

‫في خطوة مهمة تسعى إلى دمج‬ ‫تقنية بلوك تشين (‪ )Blockchain‬في‬ ‫المؤسسات التعليمية‪ ،‬أعلنت جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية (كاوست)‬ ‫وليرنيغ ماشين تيكنولوجيز( (�‪Learning Ma‬‬ ‫‪ ،)chine Technologies‬في ‪ 19‬نوفمبر‬ ‫‪ ،20188‬عن إصدار بلوك سيرتس (�‪Block‬‬ ‫‪ ،)certs‬التي هي عبارة عن شهادات‬ ‫رقمية تقوم على تقنية بلوك تشين‪ .‬األمر‬ ‫الذي من شأنه أن يضع كاوست ضمن‬ ‫الئحة الجامعات العالمية التي تستخدم‬ ‫هذا النموذج كمعهد ماساتشوستس‬ ‫للتكنولوجيا‪ ،‬وجامعة ملبورن‪ ،‬وكلية‬ ‫المجتمع المركزية في نيومكسيكو‪.‬‬ ‫وســتصدر كاوست شهاداتها الرقمية‬ ‫ألول مــرة لجميع خريجي عام ‪،2018‬‬ ‫مســتخدمة نظام شركة ليرنيغ ماشين‬ ‫تيكنولوجيز‪ .‬وســتعتمد الشهادات‬ ‫الصادرة على مبدأ بلوك ســيرتس القائم‬ ‫على تقنية بلوك تشــين‪ ،‬الذي يعد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مفتوحا للســجالت الرقمية‬ ‫عالميا‬ ‫معيارا‬ ‫المعتمــدة المحمولة واآلمنة‪ ،‬والتي‬ ‫يمكــن التحقق منها مدى الحياة دون‬ ‫أية تكلفة‪ .‬ويتم إدارة بلوك ســيرتس‪،‬‬ ‫التي طورتها ليرنيغ ماشــين باالشتراك‬ ‫مع مختبر الوســائط المتعددة في معهد‬ ‫ماساتشوســتس للتكنولوجيا‪ ،‬من قبل‬ ‫مجتمع عالمي من المســاهمين‪.‬‬ ‫وفي هذا الســياق‪ ،‬قال جايسون رووس‪،‬‬ ‫الرئيس التنفيــذي لتقنية المعلومات في‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عالميا في‬ ‫كاوســت‪" :‬كجامعة رائدة‬

‫مدير اإلدارة العامة لبرامج المنح البحثية في مدينة الملك‬ ‫عبدالعزيز للعلوم والتقنية‪.‬‬

‫الحلقات‪ ،‬التي تتكون كمنتجات ثانوية‬ ‫لمعالجة البترول في األسماك والكائنات‬ ‫البحرية األخرى‪.‬‬ ‫يقول معن أماد‪ ،‬العالم الرئيســي في‬ ‫المختبر الرئيســي للكيمياء التحليلية في‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مختبرا‬ ‫كاوســت‪" :‬لقد بنينا لهذا المشروع‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جديدا بالكامل‪ ،‬يســتخدم وسائل‬ ‫تحليليا‬ ‫عالية اإلنتاجيــة مؤتمتة للغاية لتحديد‬ ‫الملوثــات البيئية العضوية وغير العضوية‬ ‫على حد ســواء‪ .‬ولضمان سير العمل‬ ‫ـكل أكثر كفاءة‪ ،‬يعمل سبعة إلى‬ ‫بشـ ٍ‬ ‫ثمانيــة علمــاء في هذا المختبر الجديد إلى‬ ‫جانــب الروبوتــات ‪ -‬إذ أن أي مختبر مماثل‬ ‫دون هذا المســتوى من األتمتة‪ ،‬كان‬ ‫ً‬ ‫باحثا على األقل – حيث‬ ‫ســيتطلب ‪15‬‬ ‫يمكن لكل أداة أن ّ‬ ‫تحل مكان شــخصين‬ ‫إلى ثالثة أشخاص"‪.‬‬

‫ويرى زينون باتانغ‪ ،‬العالم الرئيســي‬ ‫في مختبر الموارد الســاحلية والبحرية‪":‬‬ ‫أن هــذا النوع من األبحاث يتطلب إتّ باع‬ ‫أســاليب قياسية دولية‪ .‬ولم تكن لهذه‬ ‫األبحــاث أن تجري في المملكة من‬ ‫عدة مختبرات‬ ‫قبــل‪ .‬فالتعاون الوثيق بين ّ‬ ‫رئيســية يســمح لنا بتقديم حلول متكاملة‬ ‫لعمالئنــا‪ ،‬وبالتالي‪ ،‬لم يعد من الضروري‬ ‫التعاقــد على أي من هذه األعمال مع‬ ‫جهــات من خارج المملكة"‪.‬‬ ‫ومن جهته‪ ،‬قال البروفيسور أحمد محمد‬ ‫العبدالقادر‪ ،‬مدير عام اإلدارة العامة لبرامج‬ ‫المنح البحثية في مدينة الملك عبدالعزيز‬ ‫للعلوم والتقنية‪" :‬من المتوقع صدور‬ ‫التوصيات بشأن مستويات االستهالك‬ ‫اآلمنة للمنتجات السمكية السعودية‬ ‫بحلول يوليو ‪ ،2019‬وذلك في ختام‬

‫هذا التعاون بين كاوست ومدينة الملك‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫نتطلع‪ ،‬وبمجرد انتهاء هذا‬ ‫عبدالعزيز‪ .‬لكننا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جنبا إلى جنب مع‬ ‫المشروع‪ ،‬إلى العمل‬ ‫جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫في مشاريع أخرى"‪.‬‬

‫مراقبة المنتجات‬ ‫السمكية االستهالكية‬ ‫في المملكة‬ ‫باتت سالمة األطعمة مصدر قلق‬ ‫واهتمام عالميين‪ .‬ومن هذا المنطلق‪،‬‬ ‫تعاونت جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية (كاوست) مع مدينة الملك‬ ‫عبدالعزيز للعلوم والتقنية‪ ،‬الستعادة ثقة‬ ‫المستهلكين عند تناول األسماك وغيرها‬ ‫من المأكوالت البحرية القادمة من البحار‬ ‫المحيطة بالمملكة‪.‬‬ ‫وإلنجاز المبادرة األساسية واالستراتيجية‪،‬‬ ‫مولت مدينة الملك عبدالعزيز إنشاء مختبر‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫للملوثات البيئية ضمن مختبر الكيمياء‬ ‫التحليلية (‪Analytical Chemistry Core‬‬ ‫‪ ،))Lab (ACL‬أحد المختبرات األساسية في‬ ‫كاوست‪ .‬وتعاون مختبر الموارد الساحلية‬ ‫والبحرية (‪Coastal & Marine Resources‬‬ ‫‪ ))Core Lab (CMR‬في كاوست مع مختبر‬ ‫الكيمياء التحليلية‪ ،‬في تصميم مشروع‬ ‫شامل لتقييم جودة وسالمة المنتجات‬ ‫السمكية في البحر األحمر وخليج العرب؛‬ ‫يجمع علماء من مختبر الموارد‬ ‫حيث َ‬ ‫الساحلية والبحرية العينات السمكية‪،‬‬ ‫ويقدمونها بعد ذلك إلى مختبر الكيمياء‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫التحليلية للمعالجة والتحليل‪.‬‬ ‫ويعمل علماء كاوست عن كثب مع‬ ‫البروفيسور سليمان محمد الفاضل‪،‬‬ ‫الباحث في مدينة الملك عبدالعزيز للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية‪ ،‬على المشورة المتعلقة بتنفيذ‬ ‫المشاريع وتحليل البيانات وتفسيرها‪.‬‬ ‫وفي هذا الصدد‪ ،‬يقول هيكو النغنر‪ ،‬مدير‬ ‫مختبر الكيمياء التحليلية في كاوست‪:‬‬ ‫"يعود التعاون بين مختبر الكيمياء التحليلية‬ ‫ومختبر الموارد الساحلية والبحرية إلى‬ ‫العام ‪ ،2015‬حين اقترحت مدينة الملك‬ ‫عبدالعزيز مع كاوست على توحيد‬ ‫جهودهما في مشروع كبير‪ُ .‬‬ ‫وطلب منا‬ ‫حينها‪ ،‬إجراء تقييم للملوثات البيئية في‬ ‫الموارد البحرية في المملكة"‪.‬‬

‫ّ‬ ‫يتمثل الهدف من هذا التعاون في اختبار‬ ‫عينة تمثيلية من المأكوالت البحرية التي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يتم استهالكها بانتظام داخل المملكة‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ونظرا للنطاق الوطني للمشروع‪ ،‬فسيكون‬ ‫للنتائج تأثير استراتيجي على إدارة البيئة‬ ‫والصحة العامة في المملكة‪.‬‬ ‫يقول النغنر‪" :‬إن النتيجة النهائية المنشودة‬ ‫هي تحديد مدى تعرض سكان المملكة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫موضحا أنه‪،‬‬ ‫لهذه الملوثات البيئية"‪،‬‬ ‫باإلضافة إلى ذلك‪ ،‬ستكون هناك‬ ‫"توصيات بشأن ماهية ومدى سالمة‬ ‫تناول هذه األطعمة البحرية في أي‬ ‫منطقة على طول سواحل المملكة"‪.‬‬ ‫واختار علماء مختبر الموارد الساحلية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تمثيليا‬ ‫قسما‬ ‫والبحرية حوالي اثني عشر‬ ‫على طول سواحل المملكة‪ ،‬من جيزان‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وصوال إلى الجزء الشمالي من البحر‬

‫األحمر‪ ،‬ومن الخليج العربي على امتداد‬ ‫وجمعت من هذه‬ ‫المنطقة الشرقية للبالد‪ُ .‬‬ ‫األقسام أكثر من ‪ 1000‬عينة من مختلف‬ ‫أنواع الحياة البحرية‪.‬‬ ‫يشرح نبيل الكونهي‪ ،‬العالم في مختبر‬ ‫الموارد الساحلية والبحرية‪ ،‬والمسؤول‬ ‫األول عن تنفيذ برنامج أخذ العينات‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫"يتطلب هذا‬ ‫قائال‪:‬‬ ‫الميدانية للمشروع‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫النوع من الدراسة تنفيذا دقيقا لبرنامج‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تجنبا ألي تلوث قد‬ ‫أخذ العينات الميدانية‪،‬‬ ‫يحدث أثناء جمع العينات وتشريح أنسجتها‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الحقا ألغراض التحليل الكيميائي"‪.‬‬ ‫وتتمثل مهمة مختبر الكيمياء التحليلية‬ ‫في تحديد الكمية الفعلية للملوثات‪ ،‬التي‬ ‫تشمل الزرنيخ والزئبق والعديد من المعادن‬ ‫السامة األخرى ومبيدات اآلفات وما‬ ‫يسمى الهيدروكربونات العطرية متعددة‬

‫من خالل العمل مع مهندســين من‬ ‫شــركة كراي‪ ،‬نجح الباحثون في‬ ‫توحيــد جهودهم الرامية إلى دمج‬ ‫برامــج "تفكيك القيمة المفردة" ‪SVD‬‬ ‫الجديــدة‪ ،‬ضمن مكتبات ‪Cray LibSci‬‬ ‫العلميــة‪ ،‬لدعم التطبيقات المتطورة‬ ‫فــي التعلم اآللي‪ ،‬وإزالة الضجيج من‬ ‫البيانات‪.‬‬ ‫وفي هذا الســياق‪ ،‬يقول ديفيد كيز‪،‬‬ ‫مدير مركز أبحاث الحوســبة الفائقة‪" :‬إن‬ ‫قصور بيئة العتاد الحاســوبي الحالية‪،‬‬ ‫بمــا فيهــا من خلل في التوازن ما بين‬ ‫القدرة الحســابية والذاكرة‪ ،‬تخلق‬ ‫تحديات لعلماء الحوســبة ومصممي‬ ‫الخوارزميات"‪.‬‬ ‫ويتطلــب االنتقال بالخوارزمية الجديدة‬ ‫البحثية‪ ،‬وتعميمها على‬ ‫مــن األوراق‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المعني بحل المشــاكل‬ ‫المجتمع‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫العلميــة في جميع أنحاء العالم‪،‬‬ ‫مجموعــة من المهارات من فريق‬ ‫متعدد التخصصات‪ .‬وكانت كاوســت‬ ‫قــد حازت في ‪ 2015‬على لقب مركز‬ ‫للتمي ز �‪Cray Center of Excel‬‬ ‫كـ�راي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫‪ ،)lence (CCOE‬تقديـ ً‬ ‫ـرا لجهودها في‬ ‫جعل الحوســبة عالية األداء في متناول‬ ‫الجميــع‪ .‬باإلضافة إلى ذلك‪ ،‬تتمثل‬ ‫مهمــة مركز كراي لالمتياز في تطوير‬ ‫تطبيقــات علمية داخلية حول األجيال‬ ‫الحالية والمســتقبلية من الحواسيب‬

‫الفائقة‪ ،‬مع تشــجيع تبادل الخبرات بين‬ ‫علماء كاوســت وباحثي كراي‪ .‬وما زال‬ ‫مركــز كراي لالمتياز منذ ذلك الحين‪،‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فعاال لتســهيل‬ ‫إطارا‬ ‫يقوم بدوره بوصفه‬ ‫دمج برامــج "تفكيك القيمة المفردة"‬ ‫‪ SVD‬الموضوعة لدى كاوســت ضمن‬ ‫مكتبات كراي العلمية‪.‬‬ ‫ويقــول أدريان تيت‪ ،‬مدير مختبر أبحاث‬ ‫كراي في أوروبا والشــرق األوسط‬ ‫وآســيا‪":‬مازلنا وعلى نحو متزايد‪ ،‬نرى‬ ‫أنــه من الضروري أن يكون هناك‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وثيقا بين شــركات تصنيع العتاد‬ ‫تعاونا‬ ‫الحاســوبي ومصممي البرامج ومطوري‬ ‫بقوة على التحديات‬ ‫التطبيقــات‪ ،‬للتغلب ّ‬ ‫التقنية‪ .‬ولقد اســتطعنا في مركز تميز‬ ‫كاوســت‪-‬كراي أن نتّ قن هذه العملية‬ ‫التعاونيــة الثالثية‪ ،‬وأن ّ‬ ‫نؤثر على مجتمع‬ ‫الحوسبة الفائقة"‪.‬‬ ‫إجراء‬ ‫تقــدم الخوارزمية الجديدة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تكراريا يعتمد على العمل األساســي‬ ‫الــذي قام به عالم الرياضيات إيغور‬ ‫زولوتاريــف في العام ‪ 1877‬ضن إطار‬ ‫حســابي‪ .‬وتتقارب الخوارزمية بسرعة‪،‬‬ ‫على الرغــم من أنها تتطلب عمليات‬ ‫أكثــر بثالث مرات من الخوارزميات‬ ‫التسلســلية الحديثة‪ .‬ويمكن تنفيذ هذه‬ ‫العمليــات اإلضافية بطريقة يمكن من‬ ‫خاللها اســتخالص مستويات جديدة من‬ ‫الطاقة الحســابية‪ ،‬ما يسمح بالحسابات‬ ‫المتوازية‪.‬‬

‫إن أعمال زولوتاريف قد‬ ‫يمكــن القول ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫عاما في‬ ‫ســبقت عصرها بنحو ‪140‬‬ ‫نظرية التقريب النســبي‪ ،‬عندما لم تكن‬ ‫الحواســيب الرقمية موجودة بعد‪.‬‬ ‫وحتــى وقت قريب‪ ،‬كانت هذه األعمال‬ ‫الرياضيات‬ ‫تقــع ضمن مجال اهتمام‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫في المقام األول‪ ،‬وباســتخدام عملي‬ ‫محــدود‪ .‬ومن ثم بدأت في الظهور‬ ‫فــي الجبر الخطي العددي والتحليل‬ ‫العددي في ســياقات حساب القيم‬ ‫الذاتيــة‪ ،‬وتفكيك المصفوفات‪ ،‬وتحليل‬ ‫المصفوفــات منخفضة الرتبة‪.‬‬ ‫ويقول البروفيســور يوجي ناكاتسوكاسا‬ ‫مــن المعهد الياباني الوطني‬ ‫أمثلية هذه‬ ‫للمعلوماتية‪" :‬نســتفيد من‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫األعمال ومن قوة الحواســيب الفائقة‬ ‫نبث الحياة‬ ‫الحالية والمســتقبلية‪ ،‬لكي ّ‬ ‫مــن جديد في تكرارات زولوتاريف وعلى‬ ‫نحو مفيد‪ ،‬ونحن قادرون من دون شـ ّ‬ ‫ـك‬ ‫علــى التفوق على خوارزمية "تفكيك‬ ‫القيمة المفردة" ‪ SVD‬المســتخدمة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا"‪.‬‬ ‫بواســطة ألكسندر باكستون‪ ،‬أخبار‬ ‫جامعــة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية‬

‫بواســطة تلسكوب سوبارو الواقع على‬ ‫ارتفــاع ‪ 14‬ألف قدم في هاواي‪.‬‬

‫وقــد لعــب العمل عن كثب مع إنفيديا‬ ‫دورا حاسـ ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ـما في نجاح المشروع‪.‬‬

‫وشرح البروفيسور أوليفييه غويون‪ ،‬عالم‬ ‫الفلك في تلسكوب سوبارو‪" :‬يتفاقم هذا‬ ‫التحدي حين استخدام تلسكوبات كبيرة‪،‬‬ ‫حيث يكون تصوير الكواكب الصالحة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫صعبا‬ ‫أمرا‬ ‫للحياة عبر الغالف الجوي ألرضنا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫جديدا للبصريات‬ ‫نهجا‬ ‫للغاية‪ ،‬ويتطلب‬ ‫المكيفة‬ ‫المكيفة‪ .‬إن نظم البصريات‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫السابقة لدينا كانت بطيئة جدا وتتأخر عن‬ ‫مواكبة االنحراف البصري المتغير بسرعة‬ ‫الناجم عن االضطراب الجوي"‪.‬‬

‫قال ستيف أوبرلين‪ ،‬رئيس قسم التقنية‬ ‫تحد غير مسبوق‬ ‫في شركة إنفيديا‪" :‬إنّ ه ّ‬ ‫للحوسبة الفائقة‪ .‬فاالنحرافات البصرية‬ ‫تتغير على‬ ‫الناجمة عن الغالف الجوي‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫مدى زمني يقاس بالمللي ثانية‪ .‬وفي‬ ‫يتعين على‬ ‫التلسكوبات الكبيرة الحالية ّ‬ ‫الخوارزميات أن تحسب اآلالف من أوضاع‬ ‫المشغل القابلة للتشوه خالل جزء من‬ ‫الثانية أو أقل‪ ،‬لكي نحصل على صور أكثر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ويعد سوبارو تلسكوب‬ ‫وتحديدا‪.‬‬ ‫دقة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫االستخدام األرضي األعلى المسجل‬ ‫لهذا النوع من أنظمة وحدات معالجة‬ ‫الرسومات‪ .‬ونحن مستمرون في العمل مع‬ ‫الفريق حيث تم رفع مستوى األجهزة من‬ ‫ً‬ ‫نظرا للتأثير الدقيق‬ ‫أجل هذا المشروع المثير‬ ‫لوحدات إنفيديا لمعالجة الرسومات"‪.‬‬

‫وتابع قائـ ً‬ ‫ـا‪" :‬تمكننا الخوارزمية الجديدة‬ ‫التي طورهــا علماء جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬ ‫الفعلي‪،‬‬ ‫للعلــوم والتقنية‪ ،‬في الوقت‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫مــن تصحيح الظالل الجوية للصور التي‬ ‫التقطتها التلســكوبات الكبيرة باستخدام‬ ‫ذكاء‪ .‬حيث‬ ‫بصريــات مكيفة مكيفة أكثر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تتعلم الخوارزمية اآلن تحســين نفسها‪ ،‬ولم‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫يتغلب علينا"‪.‬‬ ‫يعــد االضطراب‬

‫إن عمل فريق المشــروع‬ ‫ومما ال شــك فيه ّ‬ ‫ســيضيف إلى المساهمة التاريخية للشرق‬ ‫األوســط في مجال علم الفلك‪.‬‬

‫ّ‬ ‫وأكــد الدكتور حاتم لطيف في هذا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قائال‪" :‬إننا نســاعد الفلكيين على‬ ‫الصدد‬ ‫تعزيز االســتفادة من االستخدامات الحالية‬ ‫تقد ً‬ ‫ما‪.‬‬ ‫والمســتقبلية للتلسكوبات األكثر ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫كثيرا من‬ ‫فإن‬ ‫ومــن المثير لالهتمام‪ّ ،‬‬ ‫النجوم التي نرصدها بواســطة تلسكوب‬ ‫ســوبارو شاهدها ألول مرة الفلكيون‬ ‫العرب‪ ،‬واحتفظت بأســمائها العربية حتى‬ ‫اليــوم‪ .‬ونأمل اليوم أن نواصل تقاليدنا‬ ‫األصيلــة العريقة في علم الفلك"‪.‬‬ ‫كما أصبحت حلول الحوســبة الفائقة لدى‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مهم ًا من تصميم األدوات‬ ‫جزءا‬ ‫الجامعــة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المســتقبلية التي تهدف إلى تصوير‬ ‫المجــرات األكثر ُب ً‬ ‫األرضية‪.‬‬ ‫عدا عن كرتنا‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫قدما‪ ،‬يقوم باحثو‬ ‫ومــن خالل المضي‬ ‫مركز أبحاث الحوســبة الفائقة بالتعاون‬ ‫مــع علمــاء الفلك من مرصد باريس ومرصد‬ ‫"ناوط" الياباني على رســم خارطة طريق‬ ‫مشــتركة الستدامة تطوير البرمجيات‪.‬‬

‫خوارزمية حائزة على جوائز تنتقل‬ ‫بعمليات البحث عن كواكب‬ ‫صالحة للحياة إلى مستوى جديد‬ ‫حقــق فريق دولي من العلماء من‬ ‫ضمنهم خبراء الحوســبة عالية األداء من‬ ‫جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫نوعية جديدة في‬ ‫(كاوســت)‪ ،‬نقلة‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫أبحــاث الفضاء التي تبحث عن كواكب‬ ‫المجرات الســحيقة‪،‬‬ ‫صالحة للحياة وترصد‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫وترتقي بها إلى مســتوى جديد‪ .‬يتضمن‬ ‫هــذا الفريق الدولي إلى جانب خبراء‬ ‫الحوســبة عالية األداء من كاوست‪،‬‬ ‫علمــاء فلك من مرصد باريس والمرصد‬ ‫الفلكــي الوطني الياباني‪ ،‬بالتعاون مع‬ ‫شركة إنفيديا العالمية‪.‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مترا‪،‬‬ ‫أن تلســكوب سوبارو ذي ‪8.2‬‬ ‫يذكر ّ‬ ‫الموجــود في مرصد "ناوج" الياباني‪ ،‬أنجز‬ ‫مؤخـ ً‬ ‫فضائي ًا؛ في حين بدأ‬ ‫عملي ًا‬ ‫ـرا بيانـ ًـا‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫فريق مرصــد باريس يعمل بالفعل على‬ ‫توســعة الخوارزميات الالزمة لتلسكوبات‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حجما‪ .‬فيما يعمل مركز‬ ‫المســتقبل األكبر‬ ‫أبحاث الحوســبة الفائقة في جامعة‬ ‫الملك عبــداهلل للعلوم والتقنية مع علماء‬ ‫بصريات‬ ‫الفلــك على تطوير خوارزميات‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫مكيفــة ‪ AO‬متقدمة تلبي التحديات‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫الهائلــة المتمثلة في تصوير الكواكب‬ ‫الخارجيــة الصالحة للحياة‪.‬‬ ‫ّ‬

‫المذهلــة الجديدة إللقاء نظرة فاحصة‬ ‫علــى الكواكب الخارجية التي تدور حول‬ ‫النجوم القريبة‪ .‬ومع التلســكوبات األكبر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ذات ‪ 25-40‬متـ ً‬ ‫حاليا‬ ‫ـرا التي يبنيها‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫قريبا من تصوير‬ ‫ـنتمكن‬ ‫علماء الفلك‪ ،‬سـ‬ ‫كواكب أخرى شــبيهة باألرض تدور‬ ‫حول نجوم قريبة‪ ،‬وســيتم قياس تكوين‬ ‫غالفهــا الجوي‪ ،‬بغية البحث عن عالمات‬ ‫الحياة مثل وجود األكســجين أو الماء أو‬ ‫غاز الميثان"‪.‬‬

‫وقــد انبثق من هذا التعاون نهج جديد‬ ‫ً‬ ‫المكيفة‪ ،‬يســتخدم‬ ‫جذريا في البصريات‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫خوارزميات تحكم أســرع وأكبر وأذكى‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫بكثيــر‪ .‬وبدعم من قدرات الجبر الخطي‬ ‫في كاوســت التي تعمل على وحدات‬ ‫فإن منظومة‬ ‫إنفيديا لمعالجة الرســومات‪ّ ،‬‬ ‫الحوســبة الجديدة تعمل على تحسين‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫تتعلم كيفية‬ ‫نفســها باســتمرار‪ ،‬وحتى أنها‬ ‫توقع حدوث اضطرابات بصرية ســريعة‬ ‫التغيــر ناجمة عن الغالف الجوي لألرض‪.‬‬

‫وقد قام باحثو مركز أبحاث الحوســبة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مؤخرا بتطبيق خوارزمية جديدة‬ ‫الفائقــة‬ ‫لتفريــق القيمة المفردة ‪ ،SVD‬والتي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫غالبا ما يشــار إليها باســم العمود الفقري‬ ‫للجبــر الخطي الرقمي‪ ،‬للتحكم األمثل‬ ‫في المرآة الصغيرة عالية الســرعة القابلة‬ ‫للتشـ ّ‬ ‫التشوهات الناجمة‬ ‫ـكل‪ ،‬بغية تعويض‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫أن‬ ‫عــن االضطراب الجوي‪ .‬وجدير بالذكر ّ‬ ‫هــذا البحــث حصد جائزة من أفضل الجوائز‬ ‫البحثية في مؤتمر "منبر الحوســبة العلمية‬ ‫ّ‬ ‫المتقدمــة" ‪ PASC‬للعام ‪ 2018‬الذي‬ ‫أقيم في بازل بسويســرا‪ .‬وقد استخدم‬ ‫علمــاء الفلك بنجاح هذا االبتكار في‬ ‫تصوير كواكب خارج المجموعة الشمســية‬

‫وفي هذا الصدد‪ ،‬قال البروفيســور‬ ‫داميــان غراتادور‪ ،‬عالم الفلك في مرصد‬ ‫باريس‪" :‬إنّ نا نســتخدم بالفعل هذه التقنية‬

‫وتقول األميرة هالة بنت خالد بن‬ ‫سلطان في حديثها عن أهم مشاريع‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أوال‬ ‫المؤسسة‪ ،‬هما برنامجان يتمثالن‬ ‫بالرحلة البحثية للبعثة االستكشافية‬ ‫التي استمرت ‪ 5‬سنوات‪ ،‬تم خاللها زيارة‬ ‫‪ 15‬دولة‪ ،‬زارت فيها المؤسسة ‪1000‬‬ ‫موقع بتواجد ‪ 200‬باحث‪ .‬وتم خاللها‬ ‫جمع كم هائل من المعلومات ال تزال‬ ‫قيد الدراسة للحصول على مخرجات‬ ‫وتوصيات‪ ،‬تهدف إلى التأثير على الدول‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مسبقا والدول المجاورة‬ ‫التي تم زيارتها‬ ‫لها‪ ،‬للمحافظة على صحة واستدامة‬ ‫موارد المحيطات‪.‬‬ ‫أما البرنامج اآلخر فهو أحد البرامج‬ ‫العلمية المتعددة للمؤسسة‪،‬‬ ‫والمعروف على المستوى الدراسي‬ ‫للمرحلتين المتوسطة والثانوية‪ ،‬بإسم‬ ‫برنامج المانغروف "‪Mangroves‬‬ ‫‪ ،"Program‬والقائم حاليا في دولة‬ ‫جامايكا وجزر الباهامز‪ .‬حيث تقوم‬ ‫المؤسسة‍بإرسال المختصين لديها لعدة‬ ‫مدارس هناك‪ ،‬لتوعية الطلبة وتعليمهم‬ ‫للمساهمة في تخريج جيل كامل‪،‬‬ ‫يسعى للمحافظة على البيئة‪ ،‬ليساهم‬ ‫بالتأثيرعلى المجتمع بشكل كامل‪.‬‬ ‫وأضافت األميرة هالة في حديثها عن‬ ‫أهمية الشركات والمؤسسات البحرية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حاليا في‬ ‫والبيئية‪ ،‬قائلة‪" :‬إن المملكة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تزامنا‬ ‫جدا‪ ،‬تأتي‬ ‫إنتقالية مهمة‬ ‫مرحلة‬ ‫ٍ‬ ‫مع أهداف ورؤية المملكة ‪،2030‬‬ ‫حيث تم اإلعالن عن عدة مشاريع‬ ‫سياحية وإقتصادية على إمتداد سواحل‬ ‫البحر األحمر‪ ،‬يأتي في طليعتها مشروع‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أيضا قد تم اإلعالن‬ ‫"نيوم"‪ .‬وكان‬ ‫منذ فترة وجيزة عن مشروع "آماال"‪.‬‬ ‫وهذا بالتأكيد هو الوقت المناسب‬ ‫لنا كمؤسسات للبدء بعمليات التوعية‬ ‫المجتمعية وبرامج المحافظة على‬ ‫الحياة البحرية‪.‬‬ ‫وفي ختام حديثها قالت األميرة هالة‬ ‫أنها قامت بزيارة كاوست قبل عدة‬ ‫أشهر‪ ،‬واتطلعت على برامج وأبحاث‬ ‫الجامعة المتخصصة بعلوم البحار‪.‬‬ ‫وبينت في حديثها أن هناك عدة نقاط‬ ‫مشتركة بين المؤسسة وكاوست‪،‬‬ ‫وكشفت عن إمكانية تعاون مشترك مع‬ ‫ً‬ ‫مستقبال عن طريق أبحاثها أو‬ ‫الجامعة‬ ‫إحدى برامجها التعليمية‪.‬‬

‫كاوست ومؤسسة األمير خالد بن‬ ‫سلطان للمحيطات تبحثان سبل‬ ‫التعاون المشترك لحماية بيئات‬ ‫المملكة البحرية‬ ‫حرصت مؤسسة األمير خالد بن سلطان‬ ‫للمحيطات الحية منذ تأسيسها في‬ ‫ديسمبر من العام ‪ ،2000‬على اإلسهام‬ ‫في الجهود المبذولة للحفاظ على‬ ‫البيئة البحرية وكائناتها‪ .‬حيث تبنّ ت‬ ‫المؤسسة إستراتيجية محددة‪ ،‬تركز على‬ ‫ً‬ ‫إلتزاما بمبدأ‬ ‫األبحاث والتعليم والتواصل‪،‬‬ ‫"علم بال حدود" الذي اتخذته شعاراً‬ ‫لها‪ .‬وتسعى المؤسسة إلى إستخدام‬ ‫العلم في الحفاظ على الطبيعة‪ ،‬وصون‬ ‫مختلف البيئات البحرية التي تمثل أهم‬ ‫الثروات الطبيعية‪.‬‬ ‫وخالل استضافتها ضمن فعاليات برنامج‬ ‫اإلثراء في الخريف ‪ 2018‬التي تنظمه‬ ‫جامعة الملك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫(كاوست)‪ ،‬شرحت األميرة هالة بنت‬ ‫خالد بن سلطان‪ ،‬عضو في مؤسسة‬ ‫األمير خالد بن سلطان للمحيطات‬

‫الحية‪ ،‬فكرة إنشاء الشركة التي‬ ‫تبلورت من شغف والدها األمير خالد‬ ‫بن سلطان بهواية الغوص‪ .‬وتقول‬ ‫أنه بعد تجربته لهذه الرياضة في البحر‬ ‫األحمر في منتصف التسعينات وعودته‬ ‫للغوص لذات المكان بعدها بعدة‬ ‫سنوات‪ ،‬الحظ فروقات شاسعة في‬ ‫البيئة البحرية وفي الحياة المرجانية‪،‬‬ ‫األمر الذي دفعه إلى تأسيس هذه‬ ‫المؤسسة‪.‬‬ ‫وتسعى مؤسسة األمير خالد بن‬ ‫سلطان للمحيطات الحية إلى تكريس‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وإقليميا‬ ‫محليا‬ ‫المحافظة على البيئة‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وعالميا‪ ،‬من خالل البحوث والدراسات‬ ‫والندوات والمؤتمرات بالتعاون مع عدد‬ ‫من الدول والمنظمات الدولية‪ ،‬وعدد‬ ‫من المؤسسات المحلية كالجامعات‬ ‫والوزارات في المملكة ‪.‬‬

‫على جميع أقسام العلوم والهندسة‬ ‫(الرياضيات واإلحصاء وعلوم الحاسب‬ ‫اآللي والعلوم الهندسية والفيزياء‬ ‫والكيمياء وعلوم المواد وعلوم األرض‬ ‫وعلوم النباتات وعلم الحيوان)‪ .‬ويشرف‬ ‫في إدارته على أكثر من ‪ 2400‬موظف‬ ‫و‪ 5500‬طالب وطالبة‪ ،‬وهو أيضا أستاذ‬ ‫في العلوم الهندسية والفيزياء‪.‬‬ ‫وقبل ذلك‪ ،‬أمضى الدكتور برادلي ‪15‬‬ ‫عاما من حياته المهنية في كلية لندن‬ ‫ً‬ ‫اإلمبراطورية (كلية إمبيريال بلندن)‪ ،‬حيث‬

‫عددا من المناصب بما في ذلك‬ ‫شغل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫نائب الرئيس لألبحاث والمدير المؤسس‬ ‫لمركز اإللكترونيات البالستيكية‪.‬‬ ‫وباإلضافة إلى سجله األكاديمي الحافل‪،‬‬ ‫يتمتع الدكتور برادلي بخبرة كبيرة في‬ ‫تطوير التقنيات‪ ،‬ولديه أكثر من ‪ 25‬براءة‬ ‫اختراع مسجلة تحت اسمه‪ .‬فعلى سبيل‬ ‫المثال‪ ،‬هو أحد المخترعين المشتركين‬ ‫للبوليمر الكهربائي الضوئي والمؤسس‬ ‫المشارك لشركة كيمبريدج لتقنيات‬ ‫العرض المحدودة‪.‬‬

‫وسيخلف الدكتور دونال برادلي‬ ‫البروفيسور جان فريشيه‪ ،‬الذي شغل‬ ‫منصب نائب الرئيس األعلى لألبحاث‬ ‫واالبتكار والتنمية االقتصادية‪.‬‬ ‫ستساعد قيادة الدكتور برادلي وخبرته‬ ‫على تعزيز رسالة أبحاث جامعة الملك‬ ‫عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية التي من أهدافها‬ ‫دعم الترابط بين العلوم والهندسة وتطوير‬ ‫مناهج متعددة التخصصات تساهم‬ ‫في وضع حلول للمشكالت األساسية‬ ‫والمحددة التي تواجه المملكة والعالم‪.‬‬

‫أعلنت جامعة الملك عبد اهلل للعلوم‬ ‫والتقنية (كاوست) عن تعيين الدكتور‬ ‫دونال برادلي في منصب نائب الرئيس‬ ‫الجديد لألبحاث‪ .‬وسينضم الدكتور برادلي‬ ‫إلى الجامعة في شهر أبريل المقبل‪،‬‬ ‫قادما من جامعة أكسفورد الذي يعمل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فيها بمنصب عميد العلوم والهندسة‪.‬‬ ‫وقال رئيس الجامعة الدكتور توني تشان‬ ‫بهذه المناسبة‪" :‬ينضم إلينا الدكتور‬ ‫ً‬ ‫حامال معه خبرة علمية وميدانية‬ ‫برادلي‬ ‫كبيرة في إدارة األبحاث اكتسبها من‬ ‫عمله في عدد من المؤسسات العالمية‬

‫قائمة تحليالت "كالريفيت أناليتكس"‬ ‫(‪ )Clarivate Analytics‬كأكثر الباحثين‬ ‫ً‬ ‫استشهادا بمنشوراته البحثية متعددة‬ ‫التخصصات على مستوى العالم على‬ ‫مدى العقد الماضي‪ .‬كما حصل على‬ ‫الترتيب ‪ 125‬في مؤشر الباحث العلمي‬ ‫من غوغل (‪)Google Scholar h-index‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫علميا مع‬ ‫منشورا‬ ‫بعد نشر أكثر من ‪630‬‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أكثر من ‪ 80,000‬استشهاده‪.‬‬ ‫وفي منصبه الحالي كعميد للعلوم‬ ‫والهندسة في جامعة أكسفورد‪ ،‬يتولى‬ ‫الدكتور برادلي مسؤوليات اإلشراف‬

‫ـمة‪" :‬نظرية اللعبة هي دراسة‬ ‫يقول شـ ّ‬ ‫التفاعل بيــن صانعي القرار‪ .‬وبينما يتم‬ ‫تقليديا في العلوم‬ ‫اســتخدام النظرية‬ ‫ً‬ ‫االجتماعية‪ ،‬يقــوم مختبرنا بتحليل دورها‬ ‫في األنظمة الهندسية"‪.‬‬ ‫وفــي نظرية اللعبة‪ ،‬تعتمد قرارات‬ ‫األفــراد على قرارات اآلخرين‪ .‬فعند‬ ‫العمــل ضمن فريق‪ ،‬يجب أن يقرر‬ ‫كل عضــو فــي الفريق ما عليه فعله‪،‬‬ ‫وتتوقــف جودة هذا القرار على ما‬ ‫يفعلــه أعضاء الفريق اآلخرون‪.‬‬ ‫ـمة هو‬ ‫أحد األمثلة التي قدمها شـ ّ‬ ‫تجربــة التعامل مع طائرات بدون طيار‬ ‫مســتقلة مع متطفل‪ .‬للعمل بفعالية‬ ‫كفريــق‪ ،‬يجب على بعض الطائرات‬ ‫بدون طيار متابعة المتســلل في حين‬ ‫يجب على اآلخرين أن يوزعوا أنفســهم‬ ‫لعرقلــة طريق الهروب‪ .‬تحتاج كل طائرة‬ ‫بــدون طيار إلى تحديد المكان الذي‬ ‫توقع ما‬ ‫يجب أن تســلكه‬ ‫استنادا إلى ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ســيقوم به المتطفلون وكيف سيكون‬ ‫رد فعــل أعضاء الفريق اآلخر‪.‬‬

‫تقريبا‪ .‬يقــوم المختبر بتطوير الخوارزميات‬ ‫ً‬ ‫لكل مــن التجمع الذاتي القابل للبرمجة‬ ‫ووحــدات األجهزة من أجل االختبار‬ ‫والتحقق من الصحة‪.‬‬ ‫عند العمل كســرب‪ ،‬يمكن للروبوتات‬ ‫الفردية اســتخدام تمرير الرسائل إلى‬ ‫روبوتات مجاورة أخرى للمســاعدة في‬ ‫تنســيق قراراتها‪ .‬كأفراد‪ ،‬يجب أن يقرروا‬ ‫ما هي الرســائل التي يتم إرسالها إلى‬ ‫اآلخرين وكيفية الرد على الرســائل‬ ‫المســتلمة‪ .‬لكي تكون الروبوتات‬ ‫شمة‪" :‬األمر يتعلق‬ ‫فعالة كســرب‪ ،‬يقول ّ‬ ‫ً‬ ‫محليا"‪.‬‬ ‫عالميا‪ ،‬والعمل‬ ‫بالتفكيــر‬ ‫ً‬

‫هنــاك اتجاه آخر للبحث في "ذكاء‬ ‫الســرب" الذي يتم متابعته بواسطة‬ ‫مختبــر ‪ ,RISC‬وهو التجميع الذاتي‬ ‫للبرمجــة‪ .‬هنا‪ ،‬حيث يمكن للوحدات‬ ‫الصغيرة تركيب وفصل نفســها مع‬ ‫بناء على مجموعة‬ ‫بعضهــا البعض‪ً ,‬‬ ‫مــن القواعد‪ .‬بينما تصطدم الوحدات‬ ‫ببعضها البعض بطريقة عشــوائية‬ ‫ظاهريــا‪ ،‬يمكنها في الواقع أن تتجمع‬ ‫ً‬ ‫بشــكل ذاتي في أي بنية مطلوبة‬

‫مختبر ‪ RISC‬في كاوست‬ ‫يقوم بإعداد الروبوتات‬ ‫الكتساب "ذكاء السرب"‬

‫يتخــذ مختبر الروبوتات‪ ،‬واألنظمة‬ ‫وأجهــزة التحكم الذكية (‪)RISC‬في‬ ‫جامعة الملــك عبداهلل للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫عالميا ‪،‬‬ ‫(كاوســت)‪ ,‬أسلوب "فكر‬ ‫ً‬ ‫محليا" عند التعامل مع أســراب‬ ‫تصرف‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الروبوتــات‪ .‬حيث يقوم مختبر ‪RISC‬‬ ‫بتطوير منهجيات لنشــر الروبوتات للعمل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫معا لتحقيق المهام المشــتركة التي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫تتضمن مهاما حساســة ومرتبطة بعامل‬ ‫الوقــت‪ ،‬مثل عمليات البحث واإلنقاذ‪،‬‬ ‫والقيام بدوريات من أجل الســامة‬ ‫ومراقبة البيئة‪.‬‬ ‫ولمعالجة هــذه التطبيقات‪ ،‬يعمل مختبر‬ ‫‪ RISC‬علــى تطوير خوارزميات لتمكين‬ ‫الروبوتات من العمل بإشــراف بشري‬ ‫محدود أو حتى بدونه‪.‬‬ ‫ـمة‪ ،‬الباحث الرئيسي في‬ ‫يقول جيف شـ ّ‬ ‫‪ RISC‬وأســتاذ الهندسة الكهربائية في‬ ‫قســم العلوم والهندسة الحاسوبية‬ ‫والكهربائية والحســابية (‪" :)CEMSE‬نريد‬ ‫أن نبتعــد عن النموذج الذي يعمل عن‬ ‫بعد إلى نموذج ذي مســتوى أعلى‬ ‫ً‬ ‫فبدال من أن‬ ‫خاضع لإلشــراف البشري‪.‬‬ ‫امتدادا للمشــغل‪ ،‬يمكن‬ ‫يكون الروبوت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫أن يكون شـ ً‬ ‫ـريكا يحاول التعاون مع‬ ‫المشغل البشري"‪.‬‬ ‫الهدف هو إرســال الروبوت الستكشاف‬ ‫المنطقــة وتحديد المكان الذي بحاجة‬ ‫إلى اإلخالء أو تقديم المســاعدة فيه‪.‬‬ ‫يقوم مختبر ‪ RISC‬كذلك باســتخدام‬ ‫نظرية اللعبــة والعمل على تطبيقها‪.‬‬

‫برنامج اإلثراء الشــتوي (ويب)‬ ‫يعد برنامج اإلثراء الشتوي (ويب)‪ ،‬من أبرز‬ ‫األنشطة السنوية في جامعة الملك عبداهلل‬

‫‪ 25– 23‬يناير‬

‫للعلوم والتقنية (كاوست)‪ .‬حيث انطلقت‬ ‫فعالياته لهذا العام في الفترة من ‪ 13‬إلى‬ ‫‪ 24‬يناير‪ ،‬برئاسة البروفيسور فاليريو أورالندو‪،‬‬ ‫تحت موضوع "الوقت"‪ .‬المشاركة في البرنامج‬ ‫مفتوحة لجميع أعضاء مجتمع الجامعة بالكامل‬ ‫حيث جرى تصميم البرنامج بطريقة تلهم الطلبة‬ ‫وتحفزهم ليكونوا مبدعين وقادرين على إحداث‬ ‫ً‬ ‫شخصيا‪ .‬ويتعين على‬ ‫التأثير على اآلخرين وعليهم‬ ‫جميع طلبة الجامعة المشاركة في فعاليات‬ ‫(ويب) على األقل مرة واحدة أثناء دراستهم‬ ‫في كاوست‪ .‬ويقدم مكتب اإلثراء في الجامعة‬

‫استقبلت رائحة الخبز العربي الطازج زوار فعالية‬

‫فعاليات علمية وثقافية وترفيهية شيقة تتضمن‬

‫سوق المزارعين في جامعة الملك عبد اهلل‬

‫مواضيع فنية وتقنية‪ ،‬تهدف في المقام األول‬

‫للعلوم والتقنية‪ ،‬والتي جرى تنظيمها في ساحة‬

‫إلى إثراء مجتمع الجامعة والحضور والزوار‪،‬‬

‫االكتشاف في شهر يناير الماضي‪ .‬وتمكن الزوار‬

‫من خالل المحاضرات الرئيسية وورش العمل‬

‫من تذوق وشراء المنتجات الزراعية من التمور‬

‫واألنشطة المختلفة‪ .‬ومنذ عام ‪ ،2010‬أطلق‬

‫ً‬ ‫حدثا‪ ،‬وقام بدعوة‬ ‫المكتب ما مجموعه ‪1450‬‬

‫دوليا إلى المملكة‪ ،‬واستقطب‬ ‫‪ 1240‬متحدثً ا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ً‬ ‫ضخما بلغ مجموعه ‪ 101,850‬مشارك‬ ‫حضورا‬

‫والمكسرات‪ ،‬والبن‪ ،‬والفواكه والخضروات‪،‬‬ ‫والعسل‪ ،‬والمعمول واألسماك والمنتجات‬ ‫العضوية‪ .‬كما انضم حرفيو مجتمع الجامعة إلى‬

‫ومشاركة‪ .‬ويمكن متابعة فعاليات برنامج ويب‬

‫الحرفيين‪ ،‬الذين قدموا من مدينة جدة‪ ،‬وقاموا‬ ‫ً‬ ‫يدويا مثل المجوهرات‪،‬‬ ‫ببيع السلع المصنوعة‬

‫نكتشــف في عدد هذا الشــهر من مجلة المنارة الدور‬ ‫ً‬ ‫خصوصا تلك التــي يتم تطويرها‬‫الــذي تلعبــه التقنية‬ ‫فــي كاوســت – وذلك في محاولــة لفهمنا للبيئة‬ ‫والعالم من حولنا‪ ،‬وإمكانية تســخيرها الستكشــاف‬ ‫مجرات جديدة‪.‬‬ ‫ومــع التقــدم التقني الذي نشــهده‪ ،‬أصبحت الروبوتات‪،‬‬ ‫كتلك الموجودة في مختبر البروفيســور جيف شــما في‬ ‫كاوســت‪" ،‬شركاء" مع البشــر في األبحاث الجامعية‪،‬‬ ‫حيــث تتعاون مع العلمــاء ألداء مهام مختلفة‪،‬‬ ‫كعمليات اإلنقاذ‪.‬‬

‫أما على الصعيد المحلي‪ ،‬يعمل باحثون من كاوســت‬ ‫ً‬ ‫معا‪ ،‬على‬ ‫ومدينــة الملك عبدالعزيــز للعلوم والتقنية‬ ‫تقييم جودة وســامة المصايــد البحرية في الخليج العربي‬ ‫والبحر األحمر‪ ،‬باســتخدام أحدث التقنيات المختبرية‪.‬‬ ‫كمــا نتعــرف في طيات هذه الصفحات‪ ،‬على ســبل‬ ‫ً‬ ‫اســتخدام البكتيريــا في توفير ً‬ ‫جديدا لمشــكلة الزراعة‬ ‫حال‬ ‫ً‬ ‫الصحراوية‪ .‬ونســتعرض لكم صورا رائعة تعكس أشــكال‬ ‫وألــوان الحيــاة البحرية الجميلة فــي البحر األحمر‪ ،‬والتي‬ ‫قــام طلبة مــن جامعتنا بالتقاطها باســتخدام تقنيات‬ ‫التصويــر تحت الماء‪.‬‬

‫كمــا نطلــع على أعمال فريق دولــي من الباحثين‪،‬‬ ‫يضم علماء من كاوســت‪ ،‬في اســتخدام خوارزميات‬ ‫تــم تطويرهــا في الجامعــة‪ ،‬لتصوير الكواكب خارج‬ ‫مجموعتنا الشمســية‪ ،‬وذلك باســتخدام تليسكوب‬ ‫ســوبارو الشــهير‪ .‬كما يتعاون باحثو كاوســت مع علماء‬ ‫يابانيــون‪ ،‬لتطبيــق خوارزميات جديدة يمكنها االســتفادة‬ ‫القصوى من أســرع الحواســيب الخارقة في العالم‪.‬‬
