MINIMAL FILM POSTER BRIEF DEADLINE: FRIDAY 10TH DEC 2020 REFINEMENT WEEK -

Brief – Design two minimalist film poster – the narrative being inspired by everyday objects or landscapes. A logo for the film needs to also be created Context – Saul Bass created film posters for films such as ‘The Birds’ ‘Rope’ ‘Psycho’ (a shower) and a telephone within ‘The Human Factor’. In each of these minimal posters an everyday object was used to suggest a thrilling story.

Final Outcomes: 2 Film Posters – a final poster and a teaser A logo for the film (included on the poster) Extension work: (if time) A pattern based on the film that would appear on a film ticket

Week 1 (8th November): Research and initial planning Tasks: • Start the process by brainstorming ideas: 1. Research Saul Bass’s minimal posters and Matt Steven’s (upload 3 examples of each on sway) 2. Discuss ideas with other students what everyday objects or locations could be used to create a story (or ’narrative’) – e.g. rope, a worn music tape, a launderette, a crow, a garden shed.

3. * THE FILM CAN BE MADE UP OR BASED ON AN EXISTING ONE OR A NEW SEQUEL 4. Record your initial ideas on paper (bullet points, lists etc.) – also consider the genre of film – write down 4 different genre ideas.

5. Quickly sketch out some of these very early ideas (in a pocket sized sketchbook or on paper) Base these ideas on subject matter that you will be able to photograph. Please note that these sketches will be assessed in regards to the quality of ideas not on the quality of drawing.

Find 2 examples of posters related to past Saul Bass and one book cover from the series of Matt Stevens ‘good movies as old books’ : Select 1 and:

discuss the purpose of the poster (what type of film do you think it is –e.g. thriller, sci-fi, murder mystery, horror) -why?

discuss the ways in which the imagery visually illustrates the purpose of the poster and the compostions in regards to the weight of text and image (what is more dominate?). Explain how the object helps explain the film discuss how the designer has used the ‘Formal Elements’ (i.e. colour, composition, angles, depth of field, pattern and texture) to communicate their visual ideas to the viewer discuss whether any of the imagery is symbolic of something else and how the designer has used this to communicate her or his ideas to the intended audience discuss what aspects of this poster has inspired any initial ideas for your own poster.

Week 1&2 (15th Nov): Initial skill development & Analysing the work of 1 artist as inspiration Lesson 1& 2 Using the Youtube tutorial found on Jonathan Leigh Youtube channel create a piece similar the one on the left and Saul Bass’s influence. You can use your own image you have photographed or one from the internet Briefly (3 paragraphs) – upload 3xSaul Bass posters, research what film posters he made and why he was revolutionary in graphic design at the time, write why you think he would be called a minimal graphic designer.

Lesson 3& 4 • Look at the work of 2 out of the 4 artists included on this powerpoint whose ideas or styles you like and you think would be appropriate for this brief. Upload to SWAY and add in their names and examples of their work. (see slides 3, 9, 10 &11) • From this selection, analyse the work of 1 of these artists using the questions on slides 12&13.

Week 3 (22nd Nov): Experimenting with different materials / editing software Tasks: 1. Using one of your inspirational artists, start to work with a couple of your photographs and begin to combine elements of the photographs and elements of your selected artist to start your experimentation process for the poster.

2. Complete more experiments using your photographs as the starting point, but this time, make your experiments look less the artist’s style and more like your own style.

Week 4 (29th Nov): Advanced Idea development & creating some of the final outcomes

Develop your design ideas for the poster (including different colourways and placement of text)

2. Using Adobe Illustrator and the skills learnt in the Induction – Brainstorm the name of the movie and create your own logo for the movie that will feature on the poster Create more advanced designs for the final poster

Week 5 (6th Dec): Creating final outcomes and placing into context Tasks • Design and complete the two Final Posters – one should be a ’teaser’ and the second a more advanced version, still keeping the minimal feel •

Place the final poster into a bus stop or other context.

• Extension (for students who want to do more work) – Create your own film ticket – including patterns as backfrounds.

If you have opted to look at a graphic designer and her / his work is purely created for ‘commercial’ purposes, then look at the companies / brands that the designer works for on their website and discuss why you believe that a certain type of company would use her / his style for their to promote their brand (especially if it seems a strange or unlikely choice.)

Finally, finish with a written explanation about some ideas that you have come up for your own work after researching the work of this artist
