About Neos Company History With a new office home at The University of Akron and a highly valued performance and education presence throughout Northeast Ohio — especially in Cuyahoga, Hancock, Lorain, Richland and Summit counties — Neos has gained a reputation for artistic excellence, adventurous programming, and passionate community collaborations.

Energized by classical and contemporary choreography, Neos has showcased works by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s resident choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo, Heinz Poll, George Balanchine, and Penny Saunders. Neos director and Co-Founder Bobby Wesner has choreographed four evening-length ballets for Neos Dance Theatre and produced an additional ballet by resident choreographer Mary-Elizabeth Fenn.

Sought-after as a performer and partner, Neos has and/or is collaborating with the Akron Art Museum (November 2016), Akron Symphony (March 2017), City of Akron’s Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival, Akron Civic Theatre, Ashland’s Guy C. Myers Bandshell, Ashland Regional Ballet, Ashland Symphony, Ashland University, Belhaven University in Mississippi, Cain Park, Cleveland’s Playhouse Square, Cleveland Pops Orchestra, Dance Institute and Dance Program at The University of Akron, Dancing Wheels, Downtown Akron Partnership, Findlay Academy of Ballet, Lakeside Chautauqua, Mansfield Symphony, Oberlin College, The Ohio State University, Verb Ballets, and many more. And, reaching beyond Northeast Ohio, Neos has toured to 10 states, including Georgia where it performed along the coast this past season.

In February 2018, for example, Neos joined forces with The University of Akron’s Dance Institute, Akron Symphony Orchestra, and E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall for a new full-length ballet titled Petrushka which received rave reviews. This December, Neos presented A 1940s Nutcracker in Mansfield, at the Renaissance Theatre featuring the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra, Findlay at the Marathon Performing Arts Center in collaboration with the Findlay Academy of Ballet, and in Elyria at the Stocker Arts Center with students from the new Neos Center for Dance in Oberlin Ohio and surrounding schools.

In March 2016 and 2017, Neos received two consecutive, highly competitive arts challenge grants from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. With Knight’s support, Neos’ dance.r.evolution and Lose Your Marbles events will expand and engage audiences, by bringing together its classically trained choreographers with local urban dancers, graffiti artists and urban/pop musicians to learn from each other and present new ideas.

Based at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, NOYO is a regional orchestra training program that attracts gifted young musicians age 8-22. NOYO’s ensembles—the Philharmonia Orchestra, Sinfonietta Strings, Amati Strings, and Wind Symphony— rehearse weekly and receive intensive coaching. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Sylvia McNair Two-time Grammy Award winner and regional Emmy Award winner Sylvia McNair’s three-decade career has spanned the musical realms of opera, oratorio, cabaret, and musical theater. Her journey has taken her from the Metropolitan Opera to the Salzburg Festival, from the New York Philharmonic to the Rainbow Room, from the pages of The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal to the London Times and the cover of Cabaret Scenes. A soloist multiple times with nearly every major opera company and symphony orchestra in the world, this songbird has flown the classical coop, finding new sides to the work of Gershwin, Porter, Bernstein, and Sondheim.

This flight has included numerous pops appearances with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, and the Pittsburgh Symphony, among others. A review of her performance with Marvin Hamlisch and the Milwaukee Symphony enthused: “… she is that rare opera type who really gets the popular song. She reined in the vibrato and played to the microphone perfectly.

Her matchless enunciation not only delivered the words and their sentiments, but also helped to etch the rhythms. Her wonderfully pure ‘Summertime,’ purged of all diva carrying-on, is among the best I’ve ever heard.” (Third Coast Digest) Sylvia’s most striking performance invitations include singing the Bach B-minor Mass with the Vienna Philharmonic for Pope John Paul II at The Vatican (2000) and a recital for the U.S. Supreme Court by special request of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor (1998), and two performances with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Her engagements of the past decade reflect her passionate new direction: ten seasons at the Ravinia Festival performing with Broadway legends John Raitt, George Hearn and Brian Stokes Mitchell; a three-season national tour of Gershwin’s ‘Here To Stay’ with pianist Kevin Cole and many of the country’s top orchestras; musical theater productions of ‘Most Happy Fella’ (Ravinia 2007), ‘Camelot’ (Ravinia 2009), ‘A Little Night Music’ (Indiana Repertory Theater 2013) and performances of her one-woman show ‘Subject To Change!’ from New York to San Diego and Chicago to Palm Beach. After her opening at the famed Oak Room of the Algonquin, critic Rex Reed swooned, “I could get used to this kind of ecstasy.”

In 2016, Sylvia’s newest recording, Subject to Change!, a cabaret show about her life in music, recorded at the Aspen Festival, was released. This release is the latest in a discography of more than 70 recordings ranging from Mozart arias with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St.Martin-in-the-Fields, to the music of Jerome Kern and Harold Arlen with pianist Andre Previn. In 2011, Sylvia released a Christmas CD, Peace, which sold out its first run in a matter of weeks. In 2012, Romance, a disc of Latin jazz standards was released to a rave review from Fanfare Magazine’s Lynn Rene Bayley: “… here the record is, and it’s fabulous. In fact, it’s the biggest surprise of its kind I’ve encountered since Diana Ross’s live album of Billie Holiday standards.”

A proud Buckeye from Mansfield, Ohio, Sylvia earned a Masters degree with Distinction from the Indiana University School of Music. She received honorary doctorates from Westminster College (1997) and Indiana University (1998), the Ohio Governor’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Arts and Entertainment (1999), the Indiana Governor’s Arts Award (2011).

KEVIN COLE Pianist - Vocalist “America’s Pianist” Kevin Cole has delighted audiences with a repertoire that includes the best of 20th Century American Music. Kevin Cole’s performances have prompted accolades from some of the foremost critics in America. “A piano genius...he reveals an understanding of harmony, rhythmic complexity and pure show-biz virtuosity that would have had Vladimir Horowitz smiling with envy,” wrote critic Andrew Patner. On Cole’s affinity for Gershwin: “When Cole sits down at the piano, you would swear Gershwin himself was at work… Cole stands as the best Gershwin pianist in America today,” Howard Reich, arts critic for the Chicago Tribune.

Engagements for Cole include: sold-out performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl; BBC Concert Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall; National Symphony at the Kennedy Center; San Francisco Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra (London); Boston Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic; Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra; New Zealand Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Edmonton Symphony (Canada) and many others. Mr. Cole was featured soloist for the PBS special Gershwin at One Symphony Place with the Nashville Symphony.

Kevin Cole is an award-winning musical director, arranger, composer, vocalist and archivist who garnered the praises of Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, E.Y. Harburg, Hugh Martin, Burton Lane, Stephen Sondheim, Marvin Hamlisch and members of the Jerome Kern and Gershwin families.

Mr. Cole worked with songwriting legend Hugh Martin – Mr. Martin was vocal coach to Lena Horne, Ethel Waters, Judy Garland and many others. His discography includes Gramophone Musical Album of the Year, 1995, Gershwin’s Oh, Kay! with soprano Dawn Upshaw, his critically acclaimed solo piano disc, Cole Plays Gershwin and his vocal debut album In The Words Of Ira-The Songs of Ira Gershwin.

SUSAN GREGG is a native of Ashland Ohio. She graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of music degree from Miami (Ohio) University and earned a master of music degree from Boston University. She taught music at St Edward School for 25 years and has been organist/pianist for Ashland First United Methodist Church for 44 years. She is also a staff accompanist for Ashland University Music Department.

VISUAL ARTISTS BETTY LAIRD PERRY Ashland Ohio native and Ashland High School graduate is proud to be part of the M.A.D.E. in Ashland project of 2018.

After a practical education in Nursing RN, BSN and health care planning and policy, MS, she pursued studio art classes in 13 colleges and universities in seven states while accompanying her late husband’s career and rearing her family.

She especially enjoys working in aquamedia, pastels, encaustic and collage, often resulting in mixed media paintings. She began drawing farm animals and flowers as a child and was acknowledged in design by Scholastic Art Awards during high school art taught by Louis Penfield.

Art workshops and classes with Laurie Hein, Polly Hammett, Jen Evenhus, Mary Todd Beam and others have helped develop her skills. Her first award was from Southern Highlands Craftsman guild for a hand woven fiber piece done at Arrowmont School, Gatlinburg, TN. She has exhibited in juried shows at the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio; Coburn Gallery, Ashland University; Mansfield, Ohio Art Center and Lighthouse Art Gallery, Tequesta, Florida.

She is a member of the Southwestern Watercolor Society and Pastel Society of Dallas, Texas as well as Ashland, Ohio Arts League and Photography Club.

Enhancing her arts interest has resulted in family and friends gifting the Betty Laird Perry art gallery at the Frost Museum, Miami, Florida. The Betty Laird Perry Emerging Artist award is given annually to selected BFA and MFA students at FL International University. With other Ashland High School Alumni, she created the ARTSDREAM fund at ACCF for public school teachers arts projects.

She received numerous awards including the first Edward Frey Award at the Mansfield Art Center and the Dan Christensen Award at the Butler Institute of Art Mid-Year Exhibition. Ashland resident Kay Raplenovich, a classical singer, received an Ohio Arts Council Music Project Grant for the creation of a multi-disciplinary arts performance ALBUM; Shafer, as collaborator, created visual images presented on stage and in gallery settings at performances presented in multiple venues in Ohio and New York State. Having earned degrees from Ohio Wesleyan University, Ashland University and Miami University (OH) Shafer also studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Actively committed to arts education, she taught visual art in the public schools of SouthEuclid-Lyndhurst, OH; Lexington, VA; Hillsdale in Ashland County and Ontario, OH and received an Ohio Arts Council Fellowship for Teachers of the Arts. She served as a board member of the Ashland YMCA, Mansfield Art Center, Ohio Art Education Association, Ashland County Community Foundation and is currently active in the Ashland Community Arts League. The content of her paintings, drawings, collages and prints is her world: the past and present, visions and re-visions, which often include figures, elements from nature and visual symbols.

MARTY BOSSLER LEE A graduate of the Glassell School of Art in Houston, Texas, where she majored in painting and drawing. Marty was raised in Ashland, Ohio and attended Ashland College before moving to Texas. From 1994 through 2011, she exhibited her work in many juried Houston shows. She was selected to exhibit at the Wichita Center for the Arts, National Small Oil Painting Exhibition, Wichita, Kansas, juried by art critic, Edmund P. Pillsbury; and at Art Center Waco, Visions International Competition in Waco, Texas, juried by art critic and writer, Peter Frank. She was selected as first place winner in “Waterworks”, a national juried competition at Buchanan Gallery in Galveston, Texas, where she was a gallery artist until the gallery closed.

In June 2014, Marty returned to live and make art in her hometown of Ashland. She has assumed leadership of the Ashland Community Arts League (AshCAL). Marty was awarded Best of Show in the League’s 2015 exhibit at the Coburn Gallery of Ashland University, and received an Honorable Mention in the 2017 exhibit. Marty has also exhibited at the Mansfield Art Center May Shows of 2016 and 2017.

C o m pa n y B i o g r a p h i e s Robert Wesner, Neos Artistic Director, event planner, choreographer and is a busy father of four beautiful daughters, Genevieve, Ella, Mekah and Arowyn.

Brooke Wesner is a busy mother of four beautiful daughters, Genevieve, Ella, Mekah and Arowyn. When she isn’t in the studio she enjoys frequenting their many activities. She can also be found on the lawn mower or digging herself out of a pile of laundry. She finds solace in reading her bible and red wine.

Alexis Britford: An avid lover of tacos, warm flaky pastries and hugs that make the world disappear.

Mary-Elizabeth Ruthann Fenn is originally from Wisconsin. She loves going out and dancing like a weirdo. She likes podcasts, wellness books and the moon. She feels extremely grateful to dance and choreograph for Neos. You can often find her talking with her hands and saying “Ok, cool!”

Juliana Freude: Her favorite Akron eateries El Rincon and Luigi’s. She loves a good beer, Broadway shows, good books and motorcycles. During class you can find Juliana wearing her heating pad and enjoying a big cup of coffee. This is Juliana’s ninth season with Neos.

Rebekah Gray: Between rehearsals, you can find her studying and planning her wedding. She loves her mom’s home cooked meals, movie night with her family, and spending time with her golden retriever. Rebekah has been an apprentice with Neos about three years now.

C o m pa n y B i o g r a p h i e s c o n ’ t Ali Lebay loves camping, traveling, reading, horseback riding, snowboarding, acting, fruit, and Jane Austen. After her dance career she plans to teach English abroad. She is over the moon excited to be experiencing her first season with NEOS.

Kassandra Lee’s favorite cities she’s visited so far include Denver, NOLA, and Madrid. She somehow owns multiple yellow sweaters and loves all things Harry Potter. Kassandra can often be found hanging with her dog, Puppers, and is always down for an adventure.

Kaleb Reilly began dancing with Neos in the summer of 2017, and he loves being a part of this company’s work. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his wife, experiencing nature, playing music, and eating!

Carson Sandiford previously with the Cleveland Ballet and Joffrey Ballet Concert Group in NY moved to the Cleveland area last year. Has loved working with Neos and exploring the national and metro parks with his wife Rebeca. They also have a cat named Scooter-butt.

Katie Tackett’s favorite TV shows are The Office, Gilmore Girls and Friends. One day she wants to go to culinary school and open a restaurant. Katie loves Neos because it is a holistic and nurturing environment to grow in as a dancer.
