REFRAMED BRIEF

To design a daily personal care product for a women aged 18-30, to make the process of shaving easier, by creating a kit that has the recommended products for the best skin protection and smoothest shave.

HIGHLY COMMENDED STARPACK AWARD WINNER

1

Research the problem, user and material exploration...

Ladylike is aimed at women ages 18-30 who need a shaving product suitable to make their busy lives easier. For people who may be on a budget, in education or in beginning of adult life.

Looking into a sleek, stylish, daily product with luxury brand image. Using the idea of pumps and sprays to release product contents. Natural silver aluminium colour with labels or printed features. The use of natural and plain tones, with colour on features to stand out.

ALUMINIUM BENEFITS

Lightweight - Increased fuel efficiency in transport.

Recyclable - 100% recyclable and does not lose any of its original properties.

Corrosion Resistant - This is due to a layer of aluminium oxide.

Manufacture Process - Ductile and easy to manufacture and requires 95% less energy to recycle aluminium than to product it.

Manufacturing The process and suitability...

Process

Standard 3 piece container:

1. Folded into the triangular shape.

2. Welded down a seam on the edge of the two shorter sides.

3. Crimp and weld the two triangle base ends onto the bottle.

Material

Aluminium Grade 1050 series sheet material will be used for the packaging body. 1050 series is known for its high corrosion resistance, high ductility and highly reflective finish. It also has a high weldability.

Anodising

The packaging will be anodised in a natural aluminium light grey colour, to keep the original material aesthetic but also provide more durability and ensure the packaging is chemically safe to contain shaving products.

Embossing

Brand logo is embossed onto the front face of the bottle so it is visible when all the bottle are put together. Has a 2mm protrusion on top of the 2mm thick sheet aluminium.

Reusing

The idea behind the product is that it can be easily taken apart and washed, ready to be recycled or reused. Refillable pouches would be suitable for my product because it means the user can keep the bottles for life. It would also bring opportunities to have different flavours of products that customers can try and refill their original bottles with. Example refillable pouch from King of Shaves.

Silicone Fingers

Mattii Labs acquire many silicone fingers as waste materials from the aircraft industry. Their aim is to create new products and upcycle these silicone fingers to give them a new purpose. From looking at the properties of Silicone, it was clear a cleaning product would be suitable as it is easy to clean and the material picks up dirt and hairs easily. It also has excellent strength and flexibility properties.

Manufacturing

Inset silicone fingers vertically and over mould using the process of injection moulding. Use a CT-1 silicone sealant adhesive to bond the silicone mat to the ABS base. Slide the hinges in to the holes provided. Silicone won’t slide out due to the friction of the material but it will still allow it to have a rotating hinge feature. Permabond cyanoacrylate plastic adhesive bonding for the handles.

5 WEEK PROJECT

REFRAMED BRIEF

To design a raised garden bed that is suitable for a user over the age of 60 to continue their passion for gardening without having to bend too low to the ground. Product needs to be affordable and lightweight as well as have the suitable properties to resistant weather and ground chemicals.

4

Research the problem and identifying the need...

User and potential target markets...

35%

of people over 60 cannot bend down to the ground according to a survey. This could be due to either medical issues, joint problems or old age in general.

Elderly people struggle to bend down to their garden beds.

Due to health issues or injuries people struggle to use their garden beds.

Target Market

• Aimed for all gardeners as product can be interchangeable and provide a different height for all users.

User

• Aged 60 +.

• Has children and grandchildren

Typical garden beds are made of wood which either rots or is eaten by termites or sowbugs overtime.

Galvanised steel beds are expensive and aren’t very good thermal insulators.

• Has a passion for gardening.

• Suffers from joint pains in back and struggles to bend down.

Final Design

Ideation and technical details...

SolePower

SolePower kinetic energy technology developed to be a lightweight solution that creates power as boots strike the ground.

Graphene Batteries

Works well with the Solepower technology as the kinetic energy would charge the battery, which would power the components inside the shoe. Would eliminate the need for the user to manually charge the shoe and be longer lasting.

Lone Hiker Alarm

They work by indicating the alarm when the a worker hasn’t moved for a certain period of time or the device is tipped which indicates the worker has fallen. I would use this inspiration and develop a lone hiker alarm instead, to detect whether solo hikers were in danger.
