FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT Dear Friends: Thank you for being here, thank you for your support, thank you for caring about our Library and being a part of it. While we are enjoying the fabulous food, strolling with our friends in a beautiful soaring structure and mingling with famous authors, I hope you will take a moment to thank yourself for being a supporter, for joining this unique party and supporting this amazing event. Thanks for caring about this Library that welcomes one and all, and has become the go to place for so many people. Please know that you are being thanked by everyone who touches and has been touched by the Greenburgh Public Library. Every time someone walks in and says wow, every time a child shrieks in glee over a story, a teen is thrilled to find a DVD they have been searching for, an adult does a successful Google search.... they are thanking you. Every book, paper or E, that is read produces one more thank you. While times are tough and budgets are being slashed, we stay committed to ever enhancing the excellence the Library is known for. We are committed to improvements that make the Library more fun, more community spirited and the hot spot for one and all. Without you and all that you do, this Library would not be. What you do is beyond words. With deepest thanks,

Think of your time here this evening as a truly unique opportunity to expand your mind and palate. Our guest authors are here to give you a unique and first-hand opportunity for sharing in their experiences. Engage them and maybe purchase a book or two. But be sure to take breaks in between to sample some of the finest food Westchester has to offer. Our restaurants have prepared exciting and exclusive dishes to tantalize your taste buds! If you like what you have tried then you will be excited to know that you will be receiving a discount card applicable to many of our restaurant and beverage partners this evening to go and visit them in their restaurants for a full experience from their fabulous chefs. Plus, don’t forget to look over our wonderfully curated silent auction items, we have something for everyone to purchase and enjoy! As chairman of this event, I want to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this evening a success. Our committee is purely a volunteer organization comprised of local residents. We engage closely with library staff that often goes above and beyond to help us achieve our goals. Finally, I would also like to call attention to our altruistic sponsors. We could not have brought you this fun-filled and exciting event without the dedication and generosity of everyone involved. While you sample the offerings from the wonderful restaurants and meet the guest authors, we hope you will keep in mind the reason we are here: to help support our local library and the services it provides to the whole community. Thank you for celebrating with us tonight!

Sincerely,

HONORARY AUTHOR CHAIR

BY SARAH BRACEY WHITE Sarah Bracey White was born in Sumter, SC. She is a former librarian, college instructor, arts consultant, motivational speaker and the author of a poetry collection, Feelings Brought to Surface. Portions of her memoir Primary Lessons were previously anthologized in Children of the Dream; Dreaming in Color, Living in Black and White; and Aunties: 35 Writers Celebrate Their Other Mother. A section from the memoir was staged by the Hudson Valley Writers Center. The New York Times, The Baltimore Afro-American Newspapers, The Scarsdale Inquirer and The Journal News also have published many of her essays. Her award-winning folk tale “Wanderlust” was published on the web by WomenWriters.net. She was a 2010/2011 Inaugural Fellow at the Purchase College Writers Center. Sarah is available for book talks and motivational speeches. Visit her on the web at www.onmymind.org. For more news about the book, click on Primary Lessons or scheduled appearances.

PRIMARY LESSONS: A MEMOIR

Release date: September 3, 2013. CavanKerry Press As a precocious five year old, Sarah White is ripped from a middle-class life with surrogate parents in Philadelphia, and transplanted to a troubled, singleparent household in the Jim Crow south. “Outraged by all the things I couldn’t do in South Carolina because of the color of my skin, I rebelled against my mother’s efforts to rein in my outspoken nature and instill in me the southern virtues of respectability, keeping family secrets, and acceptance of fate. She also taught me to hate white people because they hated me. After my mother’s sudden death when I was 17, I had to re-think much of what she’d taught me, because my world suddenly became very different from hers.” In this coming-of-age memoir, Sarah travels first from Philadelphia to South Carolina – with its Whites only water fountains and segregated schools – then to a job at a summer camp in the White Mountains of Vermont – where racism masquerades as classism and she’s required to address the campers as Miss, and forbidden to swim in the camp lake because she’s the help – and finally to college in Baltimore, just as the 1963 March on Washington unfolds. “Sarah’s refusal to accept the cultural system that tries to confine her parallels the unrest of a nation seeking to re-define equality. The author’s unyielding sense of self-esteem sustains her through family, social and cultural upheavals. It also puts her at the forefront of the change that Martin Luther King dreamed about for children like her.” Kevin Pilkington, in the foreword to Primary Lessons.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

DAVID BURR GERRARD David Burr Gerrard is a contributing editor at Tottenville Review, and his work has also appeared in The Awl, The Millions, Specter, Extract(s), and elsewhere. He teaches creative writing at Manhattanville College. His debut novel, Short Century, will be published in March.

SHORT CENTURY When a mysterious blogger reveals renowned pro-war journalist Arthur Hunt’s long-ago incestuous affair with his smart but impressionable younger sister, Emily, Arthur writes a memoir in defense of his life, coming to terms with his shattered sense of self, his skewed political ideals, and the crumbling American empire he has been struggling to uphold. An angry but eloquent narrator in the tradition of Philip Roth and Thomas Bernhard, Arthur recounts his relationship with Emily, weaving in his claustrophobic WASP childhood, his ‘60s student radical days at Yale, and his vociferous support for America’s war in Iraq and its continuing drone campaign. Capturing the tumult of recent American history, Short Century is filled with supporting characters as memorable as Arthur— including Miranda, his mercurial college girlfriend; Jersey Rothstein, the charismatic free-love guru for whom Miranda leaves Arthur; their son Jason, who signs up to serve in Iraq, where he is killed; their daughter Sydney, who follows Arthur into pro-war punditry; and their daughter Daisy, who chooses to wear a burqa. With a broad historical scope but an intimate personal focus, this is a novel about America, family, and how the desire for freedom is often entangled with darker impulses.

What is your favorite cuisine to cook and/or to eat and why?

If you could go out for dinner with anyone, dead or alive, anywhere in the world who would it be and why and where would you go?

onmymind.org sarahbraceywhite.com Author Book {Food Bites} If you could cook dinner for anyone, dead or alive who would it be + why? I’d love to make dinner for Zora Neale Hurston. We’re both southernborn and graduates of Baltimore’s Morgan State University (she attended Morgan when it was only a high school). Her exuberant nature, canny intelligence, sense of humor, observations about humanity and desire to record the life and times of southerners all intrigue me. She is the ultimate “southern storyteller” and would make the evening very entertaining and enjoyable.

My favorite cuisine is probably the greasiest possible Chinese takeout, for the obvious if not exactly admirable reasons that it’s easy and tastes good. But my single favorite thing to eat is actually quite healthy (and, actually, even easier). Nothing, maybe not even coffee, is better for a writing session than a crunchy red apple, which may be why apples found their way into my novel, albeit in nefarious form--a bullying older brother who likes to shove apple cores down my protagonist’s throat.

If I could dine with anyone, it would be with Rod Serling, author of some very fine live-television plays in the 1950s and, of course, creator of the iconic TV series The Twilight Zone. By all accounts, Rod was an agreeable fellow and good company. He could easily talk your ear off, but had a good sense of humor and a genuine sense of humility. I still remember watching the first TZ episode, at age 6 in September 1959 (yes, my parents were crazy), and I’d want to hear Rod talk about the early days of the show.

If you could create a dish around a book title, what would it be + why?

Who is your favorite chef and why?

A dish from one of my titles! Many of my books already have food dishes in them. In NOTHING EVER HAPPENS ON 90TH STREET, Mr. Morley makes chocolate mousse that tastes rather bland. When the 90th Street cat accidentally overturns a coffee urn, he inadvertently creates Mocha Mousse, a dish I imagined, and one I wanted to have in my story, because I love the taste of mocha—it’s my favorite flavor, and I love the sound of the two words together. Mocha Mousse—ah!

18

My favorite chef is Anthony Bourdain because he combines the culinary arts with travel, history, politics and culture. He’s also a journalist and author like me and he really does his research, so when he talks about food, he is also introducing the audience to global history, food history and the history and culture of a people. I love putting everything in context! It really is about the complete narrative.

HONORARY RESTAURANT CHAIR

Glenn Vogt

Chef Alex Ghee

Created by John Crabtree (Crabtree’s Kittle House) and Glenn Vogt, the concept behind RiverMarket focuses on flavors from the Hudson Valley, offering seasonal dishes on rolling menus, like the Maple Brook Farms Burrata salad (lunch menu, $16). While dishes like Country Style Chicken Liver Pate ($7) and Hudson Valley Foie Gras paired with Rabbit Terrine ($22) scream “fancy” on the plate, the restaurant has a much more casual atmosphere. Perfect for lunch, dinner, or drinks, upscale menu items sit next to pastas, burgers ($16), and wood-fired pizzas (to come!) for mass appeal. The emphasis is here using local, seasonal ingredients, and showcasing those flavors in innovative ways. Chef Alex Ghee showcases dishes beautifully; while fresh produce, meat and dairy–from farms like Hemlock Hill, Sugar Hill Farm, and Stone Brook Farms just to name a few—have a definite appeal, he pairs ingredients in a very complimentary way. The Montauk Point Lobster “Paealla,”($38) for instance, combines the saltiness of Little Neck clams with the smokiness of chorizo, all balanced out by a beautiful lobster. While you won’t find the traditional heap of rice—Ghee offers the perfect amount of saffron carnaroli rice—the lobster bisque underneath it all is the savory surprise. Dessert is no different—if it doesn’t feature amazing local products, RiverMarket is creating them in the kitchen. While warm apple skillet pie with homemade fennel ice cream ($12) is hard to compete with, try the “milk + honey” panna cotta—you can’t find the honey gelee and bee pollen brittle anywhere else, and it’s well worth the trip ($12).

FEATURED BEVERAGE

Q+A WITH KRISTEN STONE OF BROKEN BOW BREWERY How long ago did you start Broken Bow Brewery? The brewery officially launched in August of 2013. I know it’s a family affair. What’s your secret for running a successful family business? I think it is mutual respect and encouraging each other to develop their area of responsibility to the very best of their abilities. The brewing is an obvious responsibility, but running a business is very multi dimensional and each area is important. So we make sure to treat our administrative work, marketing and tasting room experience with the same seriousness and attention to detail that we do brewing.

173 Marbledale Rd, Tuckahoe, NY 10707 (914) 268-0900 brokenbowbrewery.com

What’s the inspiration behind some of your beers? It started with personal tastes because we were brewing for ourselves. Some members of the family enjoy dark styles, such as our Broken Heart Stout and Nut Brown Ale, while others are “hopheads” who are seeking the “bite” that you will find in varying degrees in our Marbledale American Pale Ale and our Broken Imperial I.P.A.. The third group enjoys lighter beers, such as our Broken Auger Lager and Irish Red Ale. Once the brewery doors were open it was important to us to really listen to the feedback from our customers in the tasting room and to creatively develop styles that paired well with the favored foods from the local restaurants. What’s your current favorite? What do you like to pair it with? The current favorite would be our Marbledale American Pale Ale because it pairs so well with many foods that you would throw into the smoker or bbq. Aside from brewing, we all enjoy eating memorable meals, with an awesome Broken Bow brew of course! You took a break from canning to give me the tour. When and where will 6-packs of Broken Bow brews be available? The 6 packs are now available! Larger locations include Stew Leonard’s, Half Time, DiCicco’s and Eastchester Beverage Mart. There are also available in a growing number of restaurants and neighborhood markets from just outside NYC up to the Catskills.

INTOXIKATE REVIEW OF CHUTNEY MASALA It was the paapdi chat—a cold, layered combination of semolina crisps, diced potatoes and chickpeas topped with yogurt and chutneys—that had me at first bite. I imagine most love affairs don’t start off that way. But I’m no ordinary gal, it wasn’t an ordinary restaurant setting, and there was nothing ordinary on the plate in front of me. One taste of the traditional Indian street dish started my love affair with Chef Navjot Arora’s food. It was a warm spring evening in May, when I sat down to get a taste of competing chefs at the Golden Knives Challenge. I’d never been to Chutney Masala before, never tasted Chef Arora’s food. His first course had me hooked, and I was completely smitten by the end of the meal. What can I say? I’m a girl that falls head over heels in love with food. On the third evening of the Challenge, Chef Arora and Sunny Kalra— manager of the Irvington restaurant—sat with me at the dinner table. We talked about the history of food, the misconceptions people had about Indian cuisine, and sipped red wine. Fast forward to a few months later, and I find myself at Chutney Masala. The restaurant has a beautiful view of the Hudson; the smells of what’s cooking are enough to carry you inside. My evening started at the bar, where Sunny recommended a smooth Argentinian Pinot Noir. I enjoyed the glass enough on its own, but enjoyed it even more as a backdrop to the complexity of flavors I experienced during the meal. Knowing how much I loved the first course he featured during Golden Knives, I started with the paapdi again. Although the dish uses ingredients that tend to be on the heavier side—potatoes, yogurt, chickpeas—it left me wanting more. One of the misconceptions Chef Arora and I spoke about was that all Indian food contains curry. The traditional way you think of “curry” isn’t even correct—any Indian dish that uses “curry” means that several spices were blended together (often into a gravy) and added to the dish. Those spices could mean things like cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, bay leaves, cumin and coriander (just to name a few!). The lamb vindallo (pictured above on the right), for example, is a spicy lamb curry made with malt vinegar, whole spices and potatoes. I also dined on the tandoori chicken smothered in the restaurant’s namesake, masala sauce. The dishes, although quite different, were incredible and a true reflection of Chef Navjot’s ability to not only use a range of flavors, but hightlight them as well.

Beginning as a consulting space providing bouquet and floral preservation for the bridal market,Recologie quickly evolved to include the work of “green artists” and the focus began to change from consulting to selling sustainable products. Within the first year, in response to customer demand for unique products with compelling stories, Recologie moved to a larger location in the village creating a museum-shop ambience which continued to flourish. In 2013, Maria Cisneros, the founder of Recologie, could clearly see that the future would be in taking the next step… The creation of Recologie Lifestyle, inc. was inspired by the rise of the global sustainability movement coupled with the need to create a destination that would provide community engagement though dining, shopping, education and the arts. What makes Recologie special is our focus on unique products, some sourced from artisans in developing countries, and some sourced from emerging local artists and designers, all with compelling stories. Highlighting these artisans and providing them with an opportunity to showcase their work in a museum-shop environment enriches the community and creates a connection between the artists/designers and the consumer. Recologie supports fair trade products from around the world. The fair trade movement has the overarching goal of achieving more equity in the world trade system for the benefit of small farmers, producers and workers, particularly in developing countries. By engaging actively in supporting better prices for their products and promoting high social and environmental standards, fair trade retailers, backed by consumers, can help provide opportunities for producers to lift themselves out of poverty and to effectively organize and democratically improve their communities. Recologie’s dedication to selling “sustainable” products supports environmental, social and economic vitality. The goal is to inspire change and raise awareness as to how we all can contribute to the health of our planet through the choices of products, exhibitions and interactive workshops. Recologie’s Vistro Café offers a farm-to-table dining experience that provides health conscious and socially aware consumers with a Vegan/ Vegetarian alternative that is unique, reasonably priced and most of all, delicious!

Q+A WITH NICK SHIELDS OF SPIKED SELTZER How long ago did you start Spiked Seltzer? I spent over a year working and refining the recipe for SpikedSeltzer. It took almost 100 individual batches to reach the smooth and light product that is in the bottle now. Where is it available? SS is available from Massachusetts to Long Island, with more stores and restaurants being added every day. We’d invite you to check our website, and if you can’t find it, call or email us — Nick or Dave will most likely be the ones answering the phone.

spikedseltzer.com

What’s the inspiration behind Spiked Seltzer? I recognized that my wife, an avid sportswoman and swimmer, was constantly stocking the house with sparking waters — and drinking wine spritzers or vodka and club soda. I took it as a challenge to make something light and clean — really mimicking a lightly flavored sparking water — that didn’t have the sulfites or sugar in wine, or the harsh distilled spirit bite of vodka. It’s not easy to make something that’s so subtly flavored, as we’ve all been conditioned to expect heavier flavors or sweetness in our drinks. That heavy flavoring is really just a way to mask other things that aren’t as palatable. What’s your current favorite dish to pair it with? The fresh citrus flavors, low acidity, and crisp dryness pair with a wide range of foods. My favorites make use of a complimentary citrus flavor in the dish. e.g. Curried Thai vegetables with lemongrass rice ; Hot Tamales and Mahi Mahi fish tacos with cilantro and lime juice ; white wine steamed mussels with lemon garlic butter and parsley. SpikedSeltzer will be the signature drink and/or have a presence at the following events: Newport Film Festival, Atlantic Cup, Soundwater Paddleboard Races, Horsing around for Charity (Greenwich Polo), Cape Cod Food and Wine, and Hamptons House among other events this summer.

You’re greeted by your host within seconds… the sense of being is established. The décor feels warm and inviting, yet industrial and rustic…the perfect balance to a welcoming environment.Brick, refurbished barn wood, concrete flooring and transparent glass supported by exposed iron trusses define the structure. This place is solid. The subtle scent of wood burning in the brick oven fills the room, with the accent of seared specialties, dashed with the fragrance of fresh herbs.. washed with a glass of red wine….all served with a side of classic rock riffs.
