The revitalized Charleston Gaillard Center's state-of-the-art performance and event venue brings unique and diverse performances to the Lowcountry. Our Spring Season includes artists from all genres of performing arts, including the incomparable Tony AwardÂŽ winner Bernadette Peters on January 27, the world-renowned Classical pianist Lang Lang on February 13, and blues legend Buddy Guy on April 4.

Our artistic journey is richer through the stories you will find in these pages. Read the inspiring story of the Dance Theatre of Harlem and how they brought diversity to classical ballet; enjoy the artistry of Indian culture and music with Bollywood musical Taj Express; and marvel at the musical history of Country Music Hall of Fame icon Loretta Lynn.

As we continue our second season, educational programming is a key focus. Our Education Initiative includes ten different performances, each having a specific curriculum culminating in a performance. With each new year, we reach more and more of the Lowcountry's youth and affirm our commitment to becoming the region's largest classroom. (see pages 72-73) This season, and those to come, continue the creative dream made real by the inspiring vision of Martha Rivers Ingram, Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., the Charleston City Council and the Gaillard Performance Hall Foundation. Every stunning performance in the Martha and John M. Rivers Performance Hall, every school bus full of students seeing their first live theater show and every group that uses our beautiful and versatile meeting spaces, is validation of our commitment to excellence and service to this region.

The Gaillard Center operates and brings excellence in programming through the help and amazing support of our Board of Directors, donors, sponsors, members, patrons and volunteers.

FAQs WHAT IS THE TICKET POLICY FOR CHILDREN ATTENDING PERFORMANCES? Every patron needs to have a ticket. We recommend children under the age of five (5) attend events specifically described as suited to that age. PARKING Parking is available in the garage adjacent to the facility located at 32 Alexander Street.

ENTRANCES & ACCESSIBILITY Both of the primary entrances on George St. and Calhoun St. are handicap accessible and lead into the shared lobby space between the Martha and John M. Rivers Performance and Exhibition Hall.

DEAN Z 2013 ULTIMATE ELVIS TRIBUTE ARTIST Dean Z has dedicated his entire life to honoring the legacy of Elvis Presley, the "King of Rock 'n' Roll." From his early days growing up in the desert of Lancaster, California, to stages across the globe, he has shown time and again he is one of the best in the business today. When Dean was 3, he saw the documentary "This Is Elvis" on TV. He immediately jumped up on the coffee table and started to imitate Presley’s every move. Not long after, Dean's mother made his first Elvis jump suit and he was on his way. "The first song I sang on stage was ‘Jailhouse Rock.’ Every time I shook the audience would scream, and I’ve been shaking ever since," Z said. At the age of 17, after performing in several shows of his own, Dean took off for the bright light city that would set his soul on fire – Las Vegas. Throughout the next 12 years, Dean performed from Vegas Japan, Australia, Norway, Denmark, England, across Canada and the United States. Dean soon earned a spot with the World's Greatest Live Tribute Show, Legends in Concert. In 2007 he moved to headlining the show in Branson, Missouri. "There's just the right amount of production without watering down the authentic spirit of Elvis in the 50s," Dean says of his daily shows at Legends. When he isn’t on stage as Elvis, he can be found producing plays, independent films and performing with his two bands, The Gimps and The Kraken. In 2013, Dean decided to go after the title of Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist. Sanctioned by Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc., The Ultimate Elvis® Tribute Artist Contest™ involves hundreds of Elvis tribute artists competing in preliminary events around the world for an invitation to the finals in Memphis. He brought down the house and won the contest with his performance of Jailhouse Rock. 2014 was a banner year for Dean; he received the Heart Of The King Award in Las Vegas at the former Las Vegas Hilton on the same stage Elvis himself performed over 700 shows during the 1970s. He also fulfilled a childhood dream of performing for Legends In Concert at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. Dean’s greatest pleasure that year was headlining for the national touring production Elvis Lives, a live musical highlighting Elvis’ career featuring champions from the Ultimate Elvis® Tribute Artist Contest™.

Jay Dupuis was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he lived most of his childhood.

Growing up in a house where his father was a professional musician made it very easy for Jay to follow in his dad’s footsteps. It was no surprise that Jay had an ear for music and would soon make a career out of it. At the early age of three, his mom put on a record of Elvis Presley singing “Hound Dog”. As he listened, his eyes lit up and his hips started to move as he smiled with excitement.

Begging his mom to play it over and over, Jay became a huge fan of the King of Rock ‘n Roll. By the age of four, Jay got his first taste of live performing; he would put on white pants and a white dress shirt to mimic a jumpsuit, flip up his collar, pretend he was Elvis and put on shows in his parents’ living room for family and friends. Flash forward several years later and Jay has become a successful Elvis tribute artist. When Jay isn’t imitating Elvis, he is doing extensive studio work, surrounded by professional musicians, or on stage performing in front of live audiences playing the drums. Elvis has always been one of the biggest influences in Jay’s life and entertaining career.

He can’t remember a time when he wasn’t an Elvis fan. Jay has read extensively about Elvis’ life, studying Elvis’ performances, movies and singing style. He considers being an Elvis tribute artist a true blessing and for him it is a great honor to pay tribute to the greatest entertainer of all time. Jay was recognized by Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. as the best Elvis tribute artist in the world of 2014 and is honored to hold the title of being the 2014 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist World Champion. The contest takes place during “Elvis Week” in Memphis each year and is sanctioned by Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc.

BILL CHERRY 2009 ULTIMATE ELVIS TRIBUTE ARTIST In 2008 a 42-year-old Bill Cherry had just been laid off from his job at a steel plant in St Louis, Missouri. In a poor economy, not knowing what to do, he turned to his childhood hero, Elvis Presley.

Having grown up listening to the King and singing to his music in his bedroom, Bill decided he would use this time to pursue something he had always wanted to do: become a professional Elvis Presley tribute artist. Knowing that there were more than 100,000 people doing this internationally, he set his expectations low but aimed high. Exactly one year later, Bill Cherry was standing on stage at the Orpheum Theater in Memphis, Tennessee, receiving the coveted title of 2009 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist from the Elvis Presley Estate. Since wining the competition, Bill’s life has changed dramatically. He has traded in his hazard suit for the jump suit and he travels the world entertaining thousands of fans who want to see the next closest thing to Elvis Presley. Every night after getting off stage, fans now wait in long lines for a chance to get a kiss and take a photo. Women want to be with him and children want to be like him. “It’s amazing! None of this existed before I put on that suit. Now I have a fan club and the greatest job in the world – putting smiles on people’s faces while bringing back memories of Elvis. The craziest part is none of this would have ever happened if I hadn’t been laid off.” Bill laughs as he recalls being called back by the plant to get his old job back, “Yeah, I don’t think so, I like this job more.” The more success he has, the closer he gets to being the King. Currently one of Bill’s cars is a Stutz Blackhawk, a car that can be seen at Graceland.

From time to time you can see him performing with many of the same bands who backed Elvis, the Jordanaires, the Sweet Inspirations, DJ Fontana, and members of J. D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet. This past year he even received a key to the city of Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis’s birth town.

SHADOWLAND

BY PILOBOLUS SHOW ORIGINS Pilobolus has used a signature collaborative creative process, a weight-sharing approach to partnering, and a shape-shifting perspective to create sculptural body creations since our inception in 1971. We are always hungry to try new things. In 2006, we created a television advertisement for Hyundai in which we made a car with human bodies, a single light source, and a screen. A few months later, we were asked to make live iconic film images in moving shadow live at the 79th Annual Academy Awards ceremony. A new style of shadow-theater was born.

Our appetite for experimenting in a new medium had been whetted. In 2009, after much experimentation, we decided to use shadow-theater to develop a story that we wanted to tell about growing up, creating our first evening-length narrative dance, Shadowland. Our show is not exclusively a work of shadows; athletic choreography takes place both in front of and in back of the screen, using a handmade, “DIY” kind of multimedia to create illusions and tell its tale.

Pilobolus created Shadowland with two brilliant collaborators: Steven Banks, the head writer for the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants, and David Poe, the American musician, producer, and film composer. Many different dancers, designers, artisans, technicians, international promoters, and agents have contributed to Shadowland’s journey through 32 countries around the world. Pilobolus, in collaboration with NYU Skirball for the Performing Arts, presented the U.S. Premiere of Shadowland in November, 2015 and is grateful to everyone who has made it possible to share Shadowland with our home audiences across North America.

THE STORY Night. A teenage girl prepares for bed. As she falls asleep, the wall of her room mysteriously starts to spin, trapping her on the other side—a transfigured body stuck in the land of shadows. Unable to escape, the girl sets off on a journey of discovery. Strange creatures appear along the way—at once comic and evil, threatening and seductive. With Pilobolus’s acrobatic movement, the humor of cartoons, and the heart of a love story, Shadowland celebrates the power of dreams to help us discover who we’re born to be.

CAST SHAWN FITZGERALD AHERN (Dance Captain) grew up in Dublin, New Hampshire. He made his dancing debut at age three, enthusiastically jumping around on the living room couch in his tighty-whiteys to the sound of the B-52s. Since, he has studied in Austria and in the granite state and graduated magna cum laude from Keene State College as a theatre and dance major under the mentorship of William Seigh.

Shawn owes his passion for movement and for learning to his family, as well as the inspired instructors at KSC and the American Dance Festival. Shawn thanks you for sustaining the arts, and he thanks his family from the bottom of his heart for all of the unending support and love they bring into his life. Shawn joined Pilobolus in 2010.

KLARA BEYELER (Dancer) comes from South West France. She started dancing at age 6 and has trained in many different styles, while gradually starting to teach and choreograph as well. At 21, she graduated with a degree in Philosophy and headed for New York City to study at the Broadway Dance Center. She quickly started to dance for Cecilia Marta, Battery Dance, Enforced Arch, Artichoke Dance, and Eva Dean Dance. She joined Pilobolus in 2013 and is grateful and excited to be a part of the Shadowland cast.

NATHANIEL BUCHSBAUM (Dancer) was born in Pittsburgh, PA, and realized his love for movement while attending high school in Florida. He worked as a guest artist with the Tallahassee Ballet and in 2011 graduated from Florida State University with a BFA in Dance. Nathaniel has had the pleasure of working with KineticArchitecture, Amalgamate Dance Company, Gerri Houlihan, Martha Clarke, Brian Brooks Moving Company, and Doug Elkins. His choreography has been featured in the NewGrounds Dance Festival and the Five By Five event in Tampa, Florida, and the Amalgamate Artist Series in New York.

Nathaniel is honored to have joined Pilobolus's Shadowland in 2012.

KRYSTAL BUTLER (Dancer) began her dance training at Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C. under the direction of Sandra Fortune. Krystal moved to New York City and graduated from Long Island University. She has received scholarships and completed summer programs at the Ailey School, ADF, Earl Mosley Institute for the Arts and Arke' Danza. Krystal was a member of INSPIRIT, a dance company and Forces of Nature Dance Theater. She has toured in Senegal with the theater company Art Creates Life, performing in the play, Junkanoo and in Europe in the show MAGNIFICO produced by Andre Heller with choreography by Pilobolus. She has been a member of Pilobolus since 2011, spending 3 years touring Shadowland and now in her second year with Pilobolus Dance Theater.

HEATHER JEANE FAVRETTO (Dog Girl/Dancer) grew up in New Jersey where her hyperactivity as a child drove her parents to place her in dance classes. Sixteen years later, she received her BFA in Dance from Rutgers University and was awarded the Dance Express Honor for four years of consistently outstanding choreography. Upon graduation she worked for Douglas Dunn and Dancers, Cleo Mack Dance Project, and Naganuma Dance. She first joined Pilobolus in 2010 to work on a musical adaptation of James and the Giant Peach at Goodspeed Operahouse. Other favorites with Pilobolus include: Radiolab Live: In The Dark, a collaboration with WNYC radio moguls (and personal heroes) Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich, and best of all Shadowland! She joined the cast in 2012 and has been having a blast ever since!

DERION LOMAN (Dancer) was born in Fairfield, California. His interest in dance came from his involvement in color guard, where he toured with the World Championship Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps. Derion started dancing his sophomore year of college and graduated in 2012 with a B.A. in Psychology and a B.F.A. in Dance from the University of California Santa Barbara. He was also a pioneer member of BHdos, Ballet Hispanico’s Second Company, where he performed at a variety of events and venues including Symphony Space Theatre, The FBI, and The Presidential Inauguration. He started with Pilobolus as the company’s first-ever Dancer Apprentice and was cast as a full time company member in 2014. Derion would like to thank his colleagues, mentors, friends, family, and you - the audience - for allowing him to cultivate and share his artistry.

SHADOWLAND

BY PILOBOLUS SAYER MANSFIELD (Dancer) grew up north of Boston, Massachusetts and received her classical training with the Royal Academy of Dance, Boston Ballet and Joffrey Ballet Schools. Sayer began her modern dance training in high school at Phillips Academy Andover, working and performing with the Mark Morris Dance Group and the José Limón Dance Company. Sayer studied at the Laban Conservatoire for Dance in London, at the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance in Austria and received her BFA in Dance from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, graduating in May of 2014. Sayer joined Pilobolus Dance Theater in 2014, first as an apprentice, and now as a part of the cast and creation of Shadowland 2.

MANELICH MINNIEFEE (Dancer) was raised in North Carolina by a family of artists. His mother is an actress and his father and younger brother are both musicians. Manelich was first introduced to modern dance and to Pilobolus dance Company as a student at the American Dance Festival in 1998. That fall he went on to attend high school at the North Carolina School of the Arts where he graduated in 2000. He went on to attend NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts on a full scholarship and graduated with a BFA in 2003.

Manelich has had the pleasure of performing works of choreographers such as Gerri Houlihan, Sarah Hook, Alwin Nicholais, Trisha Brown, Nacho Duato and Jose Limon. He first joined Pilobolus in 2004 touring and creating work with the company for 5 years and since has continued to work with Pilobolus on creative projects including the 2014 production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest co-directed by Teller and Aaron Posner.

JACOB MICHAEL WARREN (Dancer) was born in San Francisco, CA and raised in Boston, MA where he began tap dancing. Tap gave way to ballet and modern dance, and in 2009, Jake graduated from Marymount Manhattan College with a BFA in Dance. Since graduation, Jake has performed in New York and around the world with Armitage Gone! Dance, The Steps on Broadway Ensemble, TakeDance, and Pilobolus’s Shadowland. He has done multiple film, musical, and theatrical projects including "Wind & Tree," a film by Abe Abraham, and "Promise," an experimental theatre piece with Chris D'Amboise and Jed Bernstein. Jake is also a dedicated musician, and a founding member of "The Harmonica Lewinskies," a NYC-based blues/rock band.

CREATIVE TEAM ROBBY BARNETT (Charter Artistic Director) was born and raised in the Adirondack Mountains and attended Dartmouth College. He joined Pilobolus in 1971.

MICHAEL TRACY (Charter Artistic Director) was born in Florence and raised in New England. He met the other Pilobolus founders at Dartmouth in 1969, and became an artistic director after graduating magna cum laude in 1973. Michael toured with Pilobolus for 14 years and has choreographed and directed the company ever since. He has set his work on the Joffrey, Ohio, Hartford, Nancy and Verona Ballets and with Pilobolus choreographed a production of Mozart’s Magic Flute. Michael taught at Yale University for two decades and lives in northwestern Connecticut.

ITAMAR KUBOVY (Executive Producer) oversees the many moving parts of Pilobolus. After joining Pilobolus in 2004, he founded Pilobolus's acclaimed International Collaborators Project, a program that invites artists and thinkers from diverse fields to participate Pilobolus’s collaborative choreographic process. He also grew the business of Pilobolus Creative Services, collaborating with clients to develop custom movement and storytelling for film, advertising, publishing, and corporate events. Itamar was born in Israel and grew up in New Haven, where he studied philosophy at Yale. Prior to joining Pilobolus, he ran theaters in Germany and Sweden, directed plays by John Guare, co-directed the 2002 season finale of The West Wing, and made a film, Upheaval, starring Frances McDormand.

RENÉE JAWORSKI (Co-Artistic Director) received her BFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

Upon graduating she began work with MOMIX, performing and teaching throughout the world as well as creating her own work in Philadelphia. She began performing with Pilobolus in 2000. Renée has served as choreographer and creator for exciting projects and collaborations such as the 79th Annual Academy 26

Awards, the Grammy® nominated video for OKGo’s All is Not Lost, Radiolab Live: In the Dark, and has worked with myriad outside artists through the International Collaborator's Project. In 2010, her alma mater honored her with the University’s Silver Star Alumni Award for her work as an artist in the field of dance. Renée lives in Connecticut with her husband and daughter.

MATT KENT (Co-Artistic Director) has worked with Pilobolus since 1996 as a dancer, collaborator, creative director, and choreographer. Past Pilobolus projects include Head Choreographer for Andre Heller’s Magnifico, a large-scale circus production; choreographer for a Sports Emmy-nominated teaser created in collaboration with the NFL network; and choreographer for a television appearance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. His work for Pilobolus on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, co-directed by Teller and Aaron Posner, was nominated for Best Choreography by the L.A. Drama Critics Circle. Outside of Pilobolus, he has worked as zombie choreographer for AMC’s hit series “The Walking Dead”; as movement consultant on the Duncan Sheik musical, Whisper House; and created family and children’s performances with Rob Kapilow. Matt lives in Connecticut with his wife and two sons.

STEVEN BANKS (Creative Collaborator) is the Emmy-nominated head writer of SpongeBob Squarepants.

He wrote and starred in the critically acclaimed one-man play Home Entertainment Center which aired on Showtime and won L.A. Weekly, Drama-Logue and Bay Area Critic’s Circle Awards and is featured on HULU. He also created and starred in the national PBS series The Steven Banks Show. His Young Adult novel, King of the Creeps, was published by Knopf. His plays include Love Tapes (co-written with Penn Jillette) and New York productions of Looking at Christmas and American Love Sex Death. Film and TV credits include Mom, My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, The Aristocrats, and The Jimmy Kimmel Show. He is currently creating a show for The Disney Channel. He attended Ringling Brother’s & Barnum and Bailey’s Clown College.

DAVID POE (Composer) performed, composed and produced the music for Shadowland and Shadowland 2: The New Adventure. He has toured the world with the likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Tori Amos, and his songs have been recorded by several other artists, including T-Bone Burnett, Curtis Stigers, Oh Land, Ana Moura, Thomas Dybdahl, Grace Kelly, the cast of Nashville, Grace Potter and Daryl Hall.

David's work also appears in a variety of film and television projects. He has scored numerous films and was named a composer fellow of the Sundance Institute in 2009. Solo recordings include his most recent effort God & The Girl, as well as Shadowland and Shadowland 2, The Late Album, Love Is Red, The Copier: Music for Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet and his self-titled debut, produced by T-Bone Burnett. He attended Rutgers University where he earned his BA in Theater Arts. He started dancing at 21 and hasn't looked back. He joined Pilobolus in 2001 and danced with the main company until 2005. He then began working with the company in many different capacities performing with Pilobolus Creative Services, teaching, and serving as Associate Creative Director. He has taught future generations of dancers in Pilobolus workshops, as well as on his own classes at colleges and Universities around the US. He was excited to get back into the studio to create Shadowland, and toured with the original Shadowland cast for two years. He has spent the last five years as the Assistant Artistic Director of Alison Chase Performance. NEIL PETER JAMPOLIS (Lighting Designer & Pilobolus Éminence Grise) has been designing for Pilobolus since 1975, creating more than 60 new works for the company. He has also had a fifty-year active career as a set, lighting and costume designer for Broadway—where he has received four Tony Nominations and a Tony Award—and for Off-Broadway, Dance, Regional Theater, and Opera, which he also directs.

His designs, large and small, have appeared on every continent. Neil is a Distinguished Professor of Theater at UCLA.

LIZ PRINCE (Costume Designer) designs costumes for dance, theater and film and has designed costumes for numerous Pilobolus productions. Her costumes have been exhibited at The Cleveland center for Contemporary Art, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Rockland Center for the Arts and the 2011 Prague Quadrennial. She received a 1990 New York Dance and Performance Award (BESSIE) for costume design as well as a 2008 Charles Flint Kellogg Award in Arts and Letters from Bard College.

YANNICK GODTS (Props Artisan) started with Pilobolus in 2013 as a production intern and has been with the company ever since. When not on the road or in the Pilobolus studio, he lives in Washington, D.C. and works as a visual artist, graphic designer, and lighting and scenic designer at large. PAUL FRYDRYCHOWSKI (Lighting Supervisor) is a graduate of the School of Theatre and Dance at James Madison University. Throughout her illustrious career, Tony Award®-winning actress Bernadette Peters has dazzled audiences and critics with her performances on stage and television, in concert, and on recordings.

Ms. Peters currently stars in Amazon Prime’s hit TV series, Mozart in the Jungle, which won the 2016 Golden Globe® for Best TV Comedy or Musical series. Her recent stage credits include City Center’s Encores! Production, A BED AND A CHAIR: A New York Love Affair featuring music by Stephen Sondheim and orchestrations by Wynton Marsalis. Prior to that she starred on Broadway in the Stephen Sondheim/James Goldman critically acclaimed production of Follies, following a successful run at the Kennedy Center. She also starred opposite Elaine Stritch in the Stephen Sondheim/Hugh Wheeler Tony Award®-winning masterpiece, A Little Night Music.

A native of Ozone Park, New York, Peters began her performing career at the age of three with appearances on Juvenile Jury, the classic TV game show Name That Tune, and The Horn & Hardart Children’s Hour. She made her theatrical debut in This is Goggle, starring James Daly and Kim Hunter, directed by the legendary Otto Preminger. Still in her teens, she appeared in The Most Happy Fella and The Penny Friend and performed in the national touring company of Gypsy.

One of Broadway’s brightest stars, Peters has received both the Tony Award® and Drama Desk Award® for her critically acclaimed performances. While Peters is best known for her work in the theatre, her career doesn’t end at the footlights. She boasts an impressive list of television credits. She has appeared in several performing arts specials such as PBS’ Evening at Pops and The Kennedy Center Honors to early appearances in variety shows such as The Carol Burnett Show and an Emmy® nominated performance on The Muppet Show. She appeared in the star-studded Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall and also played an opera divaon-the-verge-of-a-nervous-breakdown in Terrence McNally’s The Last Mile, both for PBS’ highly acclaimed Great Performances series.

MICHAEL STEWART (Co-Author) scored on Broadway the first time out when he won a Tony for his Bye Bye Birdie libretto. Subsequently he was the librettist for Carnival, for which he won the Drama Critics Circle Award, and Hello, Dolly!, which won him both the Tony and the Drama Critics prize. He also wrote the books for George M; Mack and Mabel and The Grand Tour, both book and lyrics for I Love My Wife, and lyrics for Barnum. Mr. Stewart died in 1987.

HARRY WARREN AND AL DUBIN (Composer and Lyricist) were legendary tunesmiths both as a team and as individuals. Between the two, their prodigious careers spanned six decades. They wrote Broadway shows and revues and were pioneer songwriters for sound pictures. Their combined output of songs can only be described as astonishing. Al Dubin, born in Switzerland in 1891, died in New York in 1945. Harry Warren was born in Brooklyn in 1893 and passed away in 1981. His first hit song was written in 1922, and he scored his last movie in 1962. His other collaborators included Ira Gershwin, Billy Rose, Joe Young, Gus Kahn, Arthur Freed, Johnny Mercer, Mack Gordon, Mort Dixon, Bud Green and Ralph Blane.

ADAM KIDD (Direction Recreation) has served as assistant to Mark Bramble since the 2001 Tony Award winning revival of 42nd Street. Directing credits include: Children of Eden, Rent, Into the Woods and premier productions of A Too Fast Waltz (LaMama, Etc), Secrets and Other Indulgences, Rice for Breakfast, Sticky Rice, and his own series of Cabaret acts.

STEPHANIE BROOKS (Choreography Recreation) is honored to continue her journey with 42nd Street after being the Dance Captain/Swing for the 2014-15 National Tour. Stephanie has been a teaching artist at Broadway Dance Center, Steps on Broadway, Ballet Academy East, and Broadway Dance Connection. Stephanie’s choreography was featured in Project Dance’s World Tour and the play Mannequin’s Ball at Peforma in NYC. KEN BILLINGTON (Lighting Design) has almost 100 Broadway shows to his credit including such theatre milestones as Sweeney Todd and the longest running American musical in history Chicago.

Other Broadway productions include Sondheim on Sondheim, The Drowsy Chaperone and Footloose to name a few. Many touring productions have included Chicago (worldwide), Riverdance (lighting supervisor), White Christmas, High School Musical and Annie.

About Dance Theatre of Harlem Dance Theatre of Harlem has occupied a distinguished place in the New York City cultural landscape and at the forefront of American artistic achievement for 47 years.

Established in 1969 out of the turmoil of the Civil Rights era and the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the founders were Karel Shook (1920–85) and Arthur Mitchell, who was the first African-American to become a principal dancer with a major U.S. ballet company (New York City Ballet). Since its inception, Dance Theatre of Harlem has reached more than one million people through its school, community programs, performances, and major media broadcasts. The Company tours widely, providing exceptional dance and audience engagement everywhere it performs. The institution endures as a testament to Mitchell’s legacy and vision of trans- forming lives through dance, developing a pipeline for classical artists of color, and creating access and opportunity in the arts for all people.

JORGE ANDRÉS VILLARINI The great Mexican American modern dance pioneer José Limón created Chaconne, set to J. S. Bach’s Partita number 2 in D minor for Violin, as a solo for himself in 1942. As profound a soliloquy as Hamlet's, Chaconne is a pure dance expression of being that has come to be performed by male and female dance artists.

Musically, a chaconne is a form derived from a lively and often bawdy dance that dates from the Spanish colony of Peru in the 16th century. Banned in the Spanish court, by the mid-17th century, no less a figure than Louis XIV himself danced the chaconne in his own court. By this time, the dance had taken on a majestic introspection, a quality that infuses both the score by Bach and Limón’s choreography. A timeless work, Chaconne encapsulates a rich history while illuminating universal human qualities of humanity, humility and grace.

VIRGINIA JOHNSON (Artistic Director) A founding member of Dance Theatre of Harlem, Virginia Johnson was one of its principal ballerinas over a career that spanned nearly 30 years. After retiring in 1997, Ms. Johnson went on to found Pointe Magazine and was editor-in chief for 10 years.

A native of Washington, D.C., Ms. Johnson began her training with Therrell Smith. She studied with Mary Day at the Washington School of Ballet and graduated from the Academy of the Washington School of Ballet and went on to be a University Scholar in the School of the Arts at New York University before joining Dance Theatre of Harlem.

Virginia Johnson is universally recognized as one of the great ballerinas of her generation and is perhaps best known for her performances in the ballets Giselle, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Fall River Legend. She has received such honors as a Young Achiever Award from the National Council of Women, Outstanding Young Woman of America and the Dance Magazine Award, a Pen and Brush Achievement Award, the Washington Performing Arts Society’s 2008-2009 Pola Nirenska Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2009 Martha Hill Fund Mid-Career Award.

ARTHUR MITCHELL (Co-Founder and Artistic Director Emeritus) Arthur Mitchell is known around the world for creating and sustaining the Dance Theatre of Harlem, the internationally acclaimed ballet company he co-founded with Karel Shook in 1969. Following a brilliant career as a principal artist with the New York City Ballet, Mr. Mitchell dedicated his life to changing perceptions and advancing the art form of ballet through the first permanently established African American and racially diverse ballet company.

Mr. Mitchell rose quickly to the rank of Principal Dancer during his fifteen-year career with New York City Ballet and electrified audiences with his performances in a broad spectrum of roles. Upon learning of the death of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and with financial assistance from Mrs. Alva B. Gimbel, the Ford Foundation and his own savings, Mr. Mitchell founded Dance Theatre of Harlem with his mentor and ballet instructor Karel Shook.

With an illustrious career that has spanned over fifty years, Mr. Mitchell is the recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors, a National Medal of the Arts, a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, the New York Living Landmark Award, the Handel Medallion, the NAACP Image Award, and more than a dozen honorary degrees.

KEITH SAUNDERS (Ballet Master) Keith Saunders, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, began dancing in 1971 while a student at Harvard University. He began his ballet training in 1973 at the National Center for Afro-American Artists in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Mr. Saunders joined Dance Theatre of Harlem in 1975 and continued his development under the tutelage of Arthur Mitchell, Karel Shook and William Griffith. He became a principal dancer with DTH and performed a wide range of roles throughout the company’s repertoire for more than 17 years. He also danced with France's Ballet du Nord (1986) and BalletMet of Columbus, Ohio (1987-1989).

As a guest artist, Mr. Saunders appeared with Boston Repertory Ballet, Maryland Ballet, Eglevsky Ballet, Ballethnic Dance Company, and the David Parsons Company, among others. He has been a faculty member of the Dance Theatre of Harlem School, the BalletMet Dance Academy (where he also served as Education Director), the New Ballet School (now Ballet Tech), and the 92nd Street Y. In 2003, Mr. Saunders was Guest Artist-in-Residence in the Dance Department at the University of Wyoming, and he taught and choreographed at their Snowy Range Dance Festival from 2003 – 2008. Keith Saunders was appointed Dance Theatre of Harlem's assistant ballet master in 1994 and ballet master in 1996. From 2004 - 2010, Mr. Saunders was Director of Dancing Through Barriers®, Dance Theatre of Harlem's international education and outreach initiative, in addition to directing the DTH Ensemble.

KELLYE A. SAUNDERS (Ballet Master) Ms. Saunders began her dance training at the Jones-Haywood School of Ballet in Washington, DC. She continued her dance education with Rosella Hightower at Le Centre de Danse International in Cannes, France under the tutelage of Rosella Hightower, before joining DTH. Ms. Saunders spent most of her career with the Dance Theatre of Harlem where she was a principal dancer. Some of Ms. Saunders’ featured roles include Firebird, Giselle, A Song for Dead Warriors, Apollo, Serenade, Adrian (Angel on Earth), The Four Temperaments, The Moor’s Pavane, Allegro Brillante and Fancy Free. Ms. Saunders has also appeared in the Broadway productions of The Red Shoes and Porgy and Bess and as a guest artist dancing the role of The Striptease Girl in Slaughter on Tenth Avenue in a collaborative project with The New York City Ballet. After leaving DTH, Ms. Saunders joined Ballet NY and Collage Dance Collective as a principal dancer. Some of her other guest appearances include performances with Washington Ballet, Maryland Ballet, Ballethnic Dance Company, Gala of International Ballet Stars, Configurations Dance Company, The Flint Institute of Music, Complexions Contemporary Dance and The Metropolitan Opera. Ms. Saunders has had extensive experience teaching and coaching dancers at both academic and professional levels. From 2010-2013, Ms. Saunders served as the project coordinator for the Dance Theatre of Harlem’s Harlem Dance Works 2.0 Series. Harlem Dance Works 2.0 was a series of choreographic workshops whose purpose was to produce new repertoire for the Dance Theatre of Harlem Company. She is currently a Ballet Master of the Dance Theatre of Harlem Company.

Born in New York City in 1934, Mr. Mitchell began his dance training at New York City's High School of the Performing Arts, where he won the coveted annual dance award and subsequently a full scholarship to the School of American Ballet. In 1955, he became the first male African American to become a permanent member of a major ballet company when he

DANCE THEATRE OF HARLEM ROBERT GARLAND (Resident Choreographer) "[Gloria], Robert Garland’s 2012 ballet celebrating Dance Theater of Harlem’s rebirth is a transcendent work that relies as much on imagination as steps." New York Times Robert Garland was a member of the Dance Theatre of Harlem Company achieving the rank of principal dancer. After creating a work for the DTH School Ensemble, Arthur Mitchell invited Robert Garland to create a work for The Dance Theatre of Harlem Company and appointed him the organization’s first Resident Choreographer. He is also Director of the Professional Training Program of the DTH school, and the organization's webmaster.

In addition to choreographing several ballets for DTH, Mr. Garland has also created works for New York City Ballet, Britain's Royal Ballet, Oakland Ballet and many others. His commercial work has included music videos, commercials and short films, including the children’s television show Sesame Street, a Nike commercial featuring New York Yankee Derek Jeter, the NAACP Image Awards, a short film for designer Donna Karan, and the “Charmin Cha-Cha” for Proctor and Gamble. Mr. Garland holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Juilliard School in New York City.

Anna Glass (Executive Director) Anna has been involved in the performing arts as both an artist and arts administrator for over twenty years. She recently produced Carmen de Lavallade’s newest solo show As I Remember It – an intimate portrait of this legendary artist. Anna previously served as the Managing Director of 651 ARTS, a presenting/producing arts organization dedicated to celebrating contemporary performing arts of the African Diaspora. While at 651 ARTS, she co-produced numerous projects, including the highly regarded national tour of FLY: Five First Ladies of Dance.

Anna has also served a consultant providing strategic planning and fundraising guidance to various non-profit arts organizations, including Urban Bush Women and the Weeksville Heritage Center. She currently serves on the board of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters. She has served as a Hub Site for the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project grant program. After receiving her Juris Doctor from the University Of Dayton School Of Law, Anna became the Artist Representative for the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, a company she performed with for three years (DCDC2). She is a licensed attorney in the State of New York and lives in Harlem with her husband and daughter.

Yet he never forgets what first inspired, and continues to inspire him. Great artists, above all the great composers – Liszt, Chopin and the others – whose music he now delights in bringing to others. Even that famous old Tom and Jerry cartoon “The Cat Concerto” which introduced him, as a child, to the music of Liszt – and that childlike excitement at the discovery of music now surely stays with him and propels him to what he calls “his second career”, bringing music into the lives of children around the world, both through his work for the United Nations as a Messenger of Peace focusing on global education and through his own Lang Lang International Music Foundation. As he inspires, he is inspired.

Time Magazine named Lang Lang in the “Time 100”, citing him as a symbol of the youth of China, and its future. Lang Lang is cultural ambassador for Shenzhen and Shenyang. MICHAEL INGERSOLL is a Dayton, Ohio-born artist whose grounded musical style exudes the sincerity, warmth and generosity of the Rockabilly/Rhythm and Blues greats. Before rocking the American Radio Songbook classics, Michael worked as an actor on stage and screen.

The multitalented musician and actor has a diverse array of critically acclaimed and awardnominated Chicago and regional theater credits, from “Frost/Nixon” to “A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline;” from “Beauty & the Beast” to Cincinnati Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar.” He made his film debut in the Johnny Cash biopic “Walk the Line” and enjoyed a three year run as Nick Massi of the Four Seasons in “Jersey Boys,” originating the role for the first national tour.

CHRISTOPHER KALE JONES has been singing since he was a kid in church. Before his voice changed, he sang soprano in the prestigious Iolani boys choir in his home island of Hawaii. In high school he sang in select choirs including the selective All-State Honor Choir.

In college, at Northwestern University, Chris began acting professionally, including work with Chicago Shakespeare Theater and Steppenwolf Theatre. Chris’s big break came in 2006, when he was cast in Jersey Boys as Frankie Valli for the first national tour. Other career highlights include Mercury in “Olympus On My Mind” (Bristol Riverside Theatre), for which he received a Barrymore Award Nomination, and Seymour in “Little Shop of Horrors” (Ford’s Theatre, D.C.), opposite his wife, Jenna Coker-Jones. In 2013, Chris and Jenna were blessed to add their little girl, Presley Rose Jones, to their family. When not performing with Under The Streetlamp, he spends as much time as he can with them and their awesome dogs, Fender and Rocket. BRANDON WARDELL, is the newest member of Under The Streetlamp. A native of North Carolina, Brandon is equally at home on stage, in front of a camera, in the recording studio or in the concert hall. He made his Broadway debut in “James Joyce’s The Dead,” alongside Christopher Walken, and also appeared in “Thoroughly Modern Millie” opposite Sutton Foster.

He also performed on Broadway in the casts of “Assassins” with Neil Patrick Harris, “Good Vibrations” and “Catch Me If You Can,” and was featured in “RENT” at the Hollywood Bowl, directed by Neil Patrick Harris.

Wardell sang before a live audience of more than 1 million at the 2005 Times Square New Year’s Eve Celebration, and also performed on the stage of Radio City Music Hall and at The Merle Watson Festival, sharing the bill with Allison Krauss and Emmylou Harris. He is a proud member of the Broadway Inspirational Voice choir and the Recording Academy. Also an avid producer, his work for the stage and in the recording studio has been honored with a Tony Award (he has been nominated for an additional four) and four Grammy Awards nominations.

Under the Streetlamp is a concert celebration of classic hits of the American radio songbook from the 1950s-1970s featuring tight harmonies and slick dance moves that take audiences back to an era of sharkskin suits, flashy cars and martini shakers.

SHONN WILEY is the consummate song and dance man and a gifted choreographer. He made his Broadway debut in the Tony Award-winning revival of “42nd Street.” He was then asked to star in a groundbreaking production of “42nd Street” in Moscow, making Shonn the first American actor to perform in an English speaking musical in Russia. Shonn later returned to the Broadway stage in “Dracula the Musical,” during which time he also made his television debut on “Guiding Light.” He received a Lucille Lortel Award as well as a Drama Desk Award Nomination for Outstanding Choreography for “My Vaudeville Man” and was featured in the Chicago cast of “Jersey Boys” as Bob Gaudio. Additional highlights include his debut as the title character in “Candide” at New York City Opera, costarring opposite Kristen Chenoweth in Stairway to Paradise for City Center “Encores!” and performing “Sweeney Todd” for Steven Sondheim. A young aspiring Indian composer, Shankar, is given his first big break in the film business, to create the music for a brand new Bollywood movie, TAJ EXPRESS. Music is the key factor in the success of a Bollywood movie. Shankar dreams of writing a song as successful as A.R. Rahman’s Oscar winning smash hit JAI HO in the movie Slumdog Millionaire. JAI HO means Be victorious, and Writing the music for the movie Taj Express is Shankar’s big opportunity to claim his own victory.

Shankar invites the audience into his studio and his creative world, to share the secrets of how this Bollywood movie is made. He takes the audience through the script, page by page, making the music for each character and event in this rollercoaster romance. He must write music for passionate dance numbers, thrilling fight scenes, dramatic car crashes and high energy celebrity parties in the first act. Then he must create the score for the stunning landscape of a train journey, ritualistic dances, festival celebrations and some dramatic revelations in the Second Act.

TAJ EXPRESS is the love story between Kareena, a beautiful actress, and Arjun, a handsome hero of the streets. At first it seems that they are both from opposite worlds, but their love for dance brings them together. Arjun rescues young people from the streets and offers them a training in classical dance. Kareena longs for freedom from the pressures of being a celebrity as well as a showbiz relationship that her producer is forcing her to adopt for publicity. Deep in her heart she is searching for fulfillment. The story of Goddess Saraswati is the allegory for her story, the pursuit of knowledge through rejection of material possessions and subsequent escape from the clutches of Lord Brahma. Arjun knows the path she must take to find enlightenment. She must rediscover the essence of dance, poetry and meditation and the meaning of true love. For this discovery, she must leave Bollywood and the world she knows behind.

Travelling on board one of India’s Iconic Steam engines, Arjun and Kareena escape on a thrilling adventure across this colourful, exotic and magical land.

The journey takes them from the Film Studios of Mumbai, to the southernmost tip of India, from the temples of Varanasi to the fields of Punjab, ending with a fabulous wedding in the Royal Palaces of Rajasthan.

No Bollywood story is complete without a villain and this story is no different.

Shakaal, an underground Mob Boss, has a vendetta against Arjun and a mission to bring Kareena back to Bollywood or destroy them both.

In the final dramatic encounter, Shakaal is defeated and Arjun is revealed to be an undercover Prince who marries Kareena in a fabulous, opulent, Indian wedding.

2. BOLLYWOOD AT THE OSCARS: A.R. Rahmans double Oscar® winning smash hit song JAI HO from the film Slum Dog Millionaire is the inspiration for composers from all over India.

2. FIND KAREENA!: Shankar and musicians come under pressure to finish the music. In the story SHAKAL is contracted to bring KAREENA back to work.

3. THE BEETHOVEN OF BOLLYWOOD: Shankar, a young aspiring Film score composer, is given the dream job of writing the music for the new Bollywood Romance, TAJ EXPRESS.

3. WISDOM OF THE POETS: KAREENA and ARJUN journey to Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of India.

4. THE SILVER SCREEN SIREN: Shankar writes three sizzling hits for the Bollywood Diva. The heroine of the film, KAREENA KABOOM, is India’s Hearthrob but deep in her heart she dreams of escaping her celebrity status.

5. THE KING OF THE STREETS AND THE RHYTHMS OF THE GODS.: ARJUN, hero of the movie, runs a classical dance school for street children, to break the cycle of gangland violence in Mumbai. Here they dance for Lord Ganesh, to remove all obstacles from their lives.

6. MONSOON RESCUE: Two worlds collide as ARJUN saves KAREENA from a potential disaster. SHANKAR and his studio musicians create the music of their meeting.

7. THE CALL OF ADVENTURE: In their first encounter in the refuge of his dance school, ARJUN offers KAREENA the keys of freedom.

8. GANGLAND MUMBAI: SHAKAL, the villain of the Underworld, wants to take ARJUN’s dance school to be part of his nightclub empire. The conflict between these two gangs erupts in an epic dance battle of the street.

9. BOLLYWOOD BRAINSTORM: Back in the studio the musicians create the music for the Diwali party, where KAREENA’s new star partner will be revealed, SHOWBIZ KHAN. 10. TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT: All the Bollywood stars walk the red carpet to celebrate DIWALI the festival of Lights. The identity of KAREENAS new boyfriend is the question on everybody’s lips.

11. OPPOSITES ATTRACT: ARJUN and KAREENA find a moment to be alone. In the studio, they share their first dance as the flames of their romance begin.

12. BYE BYE BOLLYWOOD: ARJUN and KAREENA escape the glare of publicity, but the Bollywood party rages on. The adventure begins.

TAJ EXPRESS SHRUTI MERCHANT Producer/Director Shruti Merchant began her career assisting her sister Vaibhavi Merchant in films like Dhoom, Lakshya, Baghban, Kuch Na Kaho, Kal Ho Na Ho, Devdas and Jab Tak Hai Jaan. She made her debut as a Choreographer and won the Big Entertainment Award for best Choreography for the song “Thug Le” from “Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl”.

Prior to directing Taj Express, she toured with travelling musicals for over five years as a touring choreographer. She has performed in countries like Australia, UK, Switzerland, South Africa, Spain, France, Singapore and the United States to name a few and it was during this time that she experienced the global theatre scene first-hand. Touring internationally she has gained experience and knowledge in the field of direction and production of stage shows.

With Taj Express, she has created a path-breaking song, dance and drama extravaganza that will entertain and enthral audiences of all ages, world-over. Shruti hopes to have Taj Express tour every big and small city around the world - to give audiences a true flavor of India.

VAIBHAVI MERCHANT Director of Choreography Vaibhavi Merchant is one of Bollywood’s leading dance choreographers. The grand-daughter of pioneering Indian choreographer Shri B. Hiralal, Vaibhavi’s journey with dance began at an early age. During her career, Vaibhavi has choreographed dance numbers in numerous hit Bollywood films. She has been awarded a National Film Award for her choreography in ‘Dhol Baaje’ from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

Her recent hits include Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Dhoom-3, Fan, Sultan and Befikre.

Vaibhavi was also the choreography director for The Merchants of Bollywood, which has been touring globally for the past ten years.

With Taj Express, Vaibhavi has worked towards bringing the magic of the story on stage through the expression and grace of various dance forms.

PRANAV MERCHANT Executive Producer Pranav Merchant has spent his life building businesses in varied industries including real estate, entertainment, etc. and guiding them to profitability. His passion for the International Musical Business brings Pranav on board the Taj Express, where he hopes to introduce audiences in India and abroad to the true essence of India while creating a global platform to showcase Indian talent. As the Executive Producer, Pranav has been dedicated to getting some of the Indian entertainment industry’s most gifted talents involved in Taj Express.

Cuban artists living in Miami in collaboration with the Grammy®-nominated super group Tiempo Libre and a new Hip-Hop project, in the Dharavi Slums of Mumbai.

He recently produced the Cuban Gypsy project album with world music guru Damian Draghici and other legends of Cuban and Gypsy music.

Toby is Director of Brazil!Brazil! Irish Celtic and Irish Celtic Generations Musical. He has created pioneering community engagement, conflict transformation projects in Sri Lanka, Yugoslavia, Africa and Australia. He directs a world music theatre venueThe World Festival, in collaboration with Brian Cox and Peter Gabriel, which won the Spirit of the Festival lifetime achievement award.

He is also the recipient of five Scotsman First Prize Awards at The Edinburgh Festival and two Spirit of the Festival Awards, two Total Theatre Awards, the Guardian International Theatre Award and has been nominated for a Grammy Award® for his work with Tanzanian musicians, the Zawose Family.

SALIM & SULAIMAN MERCHANT Music Composers Salim and Sulaiman are a renowned Indian music composer duo credited with a host of chart-topping hits. In the past decade the duo have composed music for blockbuster Bollywood flicks such as Chak De India, Fashion, Neal ‘n’ Nikki and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi to name a few.

With the title track of the Taj Express which was composed exclusively for the show, Salim and Sulaiman have created a score that features traditional Indian sounds while maintaining a global flavour.

ABHIJIT VAGHANI Music Director Having started his career with fun and spunky jingles, Abhijit Vaghani made a beeline into mainstream Bollywood, scoring absolutely thrilling and record-breaking backgrounds and tracks in Blockbusters. His eccentric sense of style and individuality equipped the scenes with precision and character.

Interpreting visual scenes into matriculate sounds comes naturally to this promising young musician.

His productions are greatly appreciated and acknowledged not only within the Bollywood Film industry and its audiences, but internationally as well. The national and international acclaim that he has achieved in such a short span of time only proves his dedication and passion for the world of music. His work as a Music Producer in latest hit movies- Sarabjit, Fan, Ki & Ka, Kapoor & Sons and Bajirao Mastani displays inspirational productions, which reflect his passion, drive and the ability to create unimaginable harmony.

BIPIN TANNA Costume Designer Taj Express is Bipin Tanna’s second experience with a musical on Stage in addition to various Bollywood movies and TV shows.

Designing costumes for the show was an extensive and intriguing project for him which resulted in over 1000 costumes and more than 500 accessories featuring exquisite details, colors, glamour and bling. One of the goals of the show is to put Indian textiles on the international map and the Taj Express is as much a journey through the vast array of Indian textiles as it is through India.

TAJ EXPRESS RAHUL Rahul was a part of India’s first ever Hip-Hop crew which was also the finalist of “India’s Got Talent Season 1”. With a personal fascination for Hip-Hop and being from a family that loves Bollywood, he is well trained in Hip-Hop and Bollywood and has been dancing for the past 13 years. He also has an avid interest in music and plans to pursue sound engineering and music production in the future.

SHRADDHA Trained in Bollywood & Indian Folk since childhood, Shraddha knows what it takes to bring the oomph to the dance floor .

ASHISH Professionally trained Bollywood, Contemporary, and Hip-Hop performer. He is also good at Kalaripayatu — a martial arts style originating from South India.

AVADOOTH Avadooth is a fourth generation flautist. He is classically trained under the guidance of Pt. Rupak Kulkarni. Music has been his passion since the childhood.

Additionally, our artist-in-residence, Charlton Singleton, noted musician and director of the Jazz Artists of Charleston, engaged students in a two-week jazz summer camp culminating in our very own Charleston Gaillard Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Grammy-nominated blues rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter Joe Bonamassa is one of the leading voices in contemporary blues music. As a child guitar prodigy, he opened up for blues icon B.B. King when Bonamassa was only 12 years old. Over the last 15 years Bonamassa has released a whopping seventeen #1 Billboard Blues albums, the most by any artist in history. With his motto “Always on the Road,” he has headlined some of the world’s most extraordinary venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Radio City Music Hall, the Vienna Opera House, Carnegie Hall, Red Rocks and the Sydney Opera House. He also has explored much musical territory with his innovative side projects like his hard-rock super group Black Country Communion, his jazz-funk unit Rock Candy Funk Party, and his soulful collaborative albums with blues chanteuse Beth Hart. Health issues were partly to blame, but the pressures of a quick rise to stardom in the jazz world became overwhelming. Peyroux took time to find herself, and, in doing so, returned to her first love of busking.

When she finally felt ready to return to the studio, Madeleine was paired with renowned producer Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Herbie Hancock) — a match that would prove to be a successful one, stretching over several, subsequent albums. The result was 2004’s Careless Love (Rounder) — a diverse collection of covers penned by everyone from Elliott Smith to Hank Williams.

Breakout track “Don’t Wait Too Long” helped push Madeleine into the mainstream by topping the jazz charts and appearing in national commercial spots and film soundtracks.

Peyroux followed the success of Careless Love with 2006’s highly anticipated Half the Perfect World (Rounder). The singer-songwriter once again paired original material (“I’m All Right,” among them) with an eclectic selection of covers (paying homage to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits and Serge Gainsbourg). 2009’s Bare Bones (Rounder) shook up the prototype, and featured all original compositions by Peyroux, including the likes of the upbeat and twangy “Instead.” Continuing her artistic growth, Madeleine released Standing on the Rooftop — her debut with Decca Records — with a new producer, GRAMMY® Award-winning Craig Street (John Legend, k.d. lang, Norah Jones).

MADELEINE PEYROUX — Rounder Records is pleased to announce the release of Keep Me in Your Heart for a While: The Best of Madeleine Peyroux, the debut anthology of the critically acclaimed, singer-songwriter’s nearly 20-year career. The album includes favorites not only from Peyroux’s releases with Rounder, but also tracks from her Atlantic and Decca/Emarcy catalogs. Additionally, the compilation includes one previously unreleased recording — the collection’s title track and Warren Zevon cover, “Keep Me in Your Heart” — which appeared in 2011’s independent film Union Square.

Liner notes by former Atlantic Records A&R man Yves Beauvais, who discovered Peyroux, complete the package.

Peyroux, whose voice has often been compared to that of Billie Holiday’s, was discovered while in her early twenties, when Beauvais spotted her at a New York club. He recalls the worldly singer’s set to be “some of the most exciting, viscerally moving minutes of my music-listening life.” Beauvais subsequently signed Peyroux to Atlantic and co-produced her 1996 debut Dreamland.

Prior to this life-changing performance, the American-born Peyroux was a musician on the streets of Paris. A precocious teenager, living abroad with her mother, Madeleine quickly became entranced with local buskers, spending much of her time accompanying a regular band on the sidewalks of the Latin Quarter with her distinctive voice, and, by 15, had dropped out of school to join a touring blues and jazz band.

Following the whirlwind release and promotion of the critically acclaimed Dreamland, the 22-year old Peyroux disappeared from the limelight, just as the buzz surrounding the singer was at its peak.

Peyroux’s most recent recording project, 2013’s The Blue Room (Decca), found the singer-songwriter once again teaming up with Larry Klein, and paying homage to Ray Charles’ classic 1962 LP, Modern Sounds in Country Western Music. Covering a handful of Charles’ songs from the album, and adding such fitting tracks as Randy Newman’s “Guilty” and Warren Zevon’s “Desperadoes Under the Eaves,” Peyroux melded multiple genres, creating an album that floated in the ether between jazz, country, blues and pop.

A living document of her artistic metamorphoses, Keep Me in Your Heart for a While … combines the poignant with the charming, the old with the new, and the standard favorites with the original compositions. Beauvais writes of his protégé, “Whether she sings Leonard Cohen (“Dance Me to the End of Love”), Bob Dylan (“You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go”) Charlie Chaplin (“Smile”), Edith Piaf (“La Vie en Rose”), or post-punk songster Elliott Smith (“Between the Bars”), [Madeleine] brings to this most diverse material the same beguilingly cautious, respectful, and crystal clear way with the melody, the same revelatory focus to the lyric’s delivery.”

RICKIE LEE JONES — Two-time Grammy winner Rickie Lee Jones exploded onto the pop scene in 1978 and has made a career of fearlessly experimenting with her sound and persona over 15 critically acclaimed albums. A cultural phenomenon, Rolling Stone magazine put her on its cover twice in two years, and Saturday Night Live gave her an unprecedented three songs for her second appearance. Rickie is both a character in the songs and the songwriter singing, defying convention with her sometimes brazen sexuality and the mixed bag of jazz, rock and what has come to be known as 'confessional' songwriter performances.

Her latest album The Other Side of Desire was written, recorded and rooted in the city of New Orleans, where Jones lives on the opposite side of the street made famous by Tennesse Williams.

Produced by John Porter (of Roxy Music) and Mark Howard, this is the first new music Jones has written in over a decade.

“This work is inspired by many years of sitting with all the events of my life until I had something to paint with,” says Rickie. “I came to New Orleans to write and to live a different way than what I have known in on the west coast…. Here is another record then, made of my imagination, and whatever else that has no words, using the clay of this place and the shapes of my eyes to form some kind of picture of my life, or my heart, that I alone can understand, and hopefully that others can enjoy.”

At age 79, Buddy Guy is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and a living link to the city’s halcyon days of electric blues. Buddy Guy has received 7 GRAMMY Awards, a 2015 Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY Award, 34 Blues Music Awards (the most any artist has received), the Billboard Magazine Century Award for distinguished artistic achievement, a Kennedy Center Honor, and the Presidential National Medal of Arts.

Rolling Stone Magazine ranked him #23 in its "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."

Buddy Guy released his brand new studio album Born To Play Guitar on July 31, 2015 via Silvertone/RCA Records, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Blues Albums chart. The follow-up to his 2013 first-ever double disc release, Rhythm & Blues, which also debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Blues Albums chart, Born To Play Guitar is produced by GRAMMY Award winning producer/songwriter and Buddy’s longtime collaborator Tom Hambridge. The new release features guest appearances by Van Morrison, Joss Stone, Kim Wilson and Billy Gibbons.

Though Buddy Guy will forever be associated with Chicago, his story actually begins in Louisiana. One of five children, he was born in 1936 to a sharecropper’s family and raised on a plantation near the small town of Lettsworth, located some 140 miles northwest of New Orleans. Buddy was just seven years old when he fashioned his first makeshift “guitar”—a twostring contraption attached to a piece of wood and secured with his mother’s hairpins.

In 1957, he took his guitar to Chicago, where he would permanently alter the direction of the instrument, first on numerous sessions for Chess Records playing alongside Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and the rest of the label’s legendary roster, and then on recordings of his own.

His incendiary style left its mark on guitarists from Jimmy Page to John Mayer. “He was for me what Elvis was probably like for other people,” said Eric Clapton at Guy’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2005. “My course was set, and he was my pilot.”

Seven years later, July 2012 proved to be one of Buddy Guy’s most remarkable years ever. He was awarded the 2012 Kennedy Center Honor for his lifetime contribution to American culture; earlier in the year, at a performance at the White House, he even persuaded President Obama to join him on a chorus of “Sweet Home Chicago.” Also in 2012, he published his long-awaited memoir, When I Left Home.

These many years later, Buddy Guy is a genuine American treasure and one of the final surviving connections to an historic era in the country’s musical evolution.

GYPSY SNIDER (Circus Creation) cofounder and co-director of Montreal’s contemporary circus company, Les 7 doigts de la main (The 7 Fingers). Daughter of the founders of The Pickle Family Circus, she has performed with the most pretigious companies around the world.

As part of The 7 Fingers, she created and directed Amuse, Traces, Intersection, Loft and their latest production, Reversible.

They met as dancers and transitioned together into the circus arts, graduating from Ecolé de Cirque in Montreal. Since then they have performed for Cirque du Soleil, Les Sept Doigts de la Main, Cirque Eloize, in the 84th Academy Awards and, most recently, in Pippin on Broadway as well as the first national tour of Pippin.

WILLIAM T. PRATHER (General Manager) is a second-generation theatre producer following in the footsteps of his very successful parents, Tom and Debbie Prather who produced live theatre for over 50 years. He is a 1991 graduate of the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University and returned to the family business in 1993 after spending a couple of years in the corporate world.

As Executive Producer of Prather Entertainment Group, he produces more than 32 shows each year in their regional theatres in Pennsylvania and Florida. As Executive Producer of Prather Touring, he produced the national tours of Beehive the 60s Musical, Footloose the 10th Anniversary Tour, The Wedding Singer, All Shook Up, BLAST, the Musical, Fiddler on the Roof, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Memphis, The Musical and most recently Million Dollar Quartet.

He resides in Fort Myers, FL with the joy of his life, his high school senior son, TJ. LORETTA LYNN FRIDAY, APRIL 7, 2017

Loretta first arrived in Nashville 55 years ago, signing her first recording contract on February 1, 1960, and within a matter of weeks, she was at her first recording session.

A self-taught guitarist and songwriter, Lynn became one of the most distinctive performers in Nashville in the 1960s and 1970s, shaking things up by writing her own songs, many of which tackled boundary-pushing topics drawn from her own life experiences as a wife and mother.

As millions who read her 1976 autobiography or saw its Oscar winning 1980 film treatment are aware, Loretta is a Coal Miner’s Daughter who was raised in dire poverty in a remote Appalachian Kentucky hamlet. Living in a mountain cabin with seven brothers and sisters, she was surrounded by music as a child.

She famously married Oliver “Doolittle” Lynn when she was a barely schooled child of 13. “Doo” was a 21-year-old war veteran with a reputation as a hell raiser. When she was seven months pregnant with her first child, they moved far away from Appalachia to Custer, Washington. By age 18, she had four children (two more, twins, came along in 1964). Isolated from her native culture and burdened with domestic work, she turned to music for solace.

Doo began pushing her to perform in area nightclubs. Executives from Zero Records heard her in a nightspot across the border in Vancouver, Canada. She soon recorded her debut single, “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl,” for the little label. The disc hit the popularity charts in the summer of 1960 and brought the couple to Music City.

Loretta’s Decca chart debut came with 1962’s “Success.” It became the first of her 51 top-10 hits and led to an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry cast later that year.

Among Loretta’s finest moments on disc are such empowering female statements as “You Wanna Give Me Lift” (1970), “I Wanna Be Free” (1971), “We’ve Come a Long Way Baby” (1978), “Hey Loretta” (1973), “Love Is the Foundation” (1973) and the hilarious “One’s on the Way” (1972). She memorably romanced and sassed Conway Twitty in a number of hugely popular duet performances in 1970-1982.

By the mid-1970s, Loretta Lynn was an undeniable superstar. Loretta continued to dominate the charts as the ‘70s drew to a close, scoring major hits with 1976’s “Somebody Somewhere,” 1977’s “Out of My Head and Back in My Bed” and 1979’s “I’ve Got a Picture of Us on My Mind.”

Her 1982 smash hits “I Lie” and “Making Love From Memory” carried her into the new decade.

Lynn is also one of the most awarded musicians of all time. She has been inducted into more music Halls of Fame than any female recording artist, including The Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, she was also the first woman to be named the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year in 1972. Lynn received Kennedy Center Honors in 2003 and a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. She has won four Grammy Awards (including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010) and has sold more than 45 million records worldwide.

In March 2016, Legacy Recordings released FULL CIRCLE, Loretta’s first new studio album in over ten years. FULL CIRCLE will take listeners on a journey through Loretta's musical story, from the Appalachian folk songs and gospel music she learned as a child, to new interpretations of her classic hits and country standards, to songs newly-written for the project.

Chicago is the winner of six 1997 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording. Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.

The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the “celebrity criminal.” Chicago is produced by the Tony Award Producing Team Barry and Fran Weissler and legendary book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb.
