Located in the dense urban setting of the Bowery, musuem’s site is constrained to a 71’ x 100’ plot.

This forced the architects to build up.

“A setback skylight allows for one to see the sky or time of day. A setback terrace allows one to stand outside and see the building up close while looking out over the neighborhood and larger city landscape.�

“After realizing the roughness of the Bowery and its vibrant history, the architects decided to use an industrial anodized aluminum mesh that wraps the volumes seamlessly, and gives the building a monolithic appearance. The undulating surface of the mesh also gives a fuzziness that reflects all the colors and angles of the sky and the cityscape.�

“A narrow staircase, 50 feet long and 4 feet wide, connects the third and fourth floors, exaggerating the distance between the two and heightening your anticipation to the point of torture. At the top, a narrow wedge of space connects the staircase to the gallery, inducing a sudden sense of compression before you experience the release of stepping into the exhibition.�
