Many tourists are lured to the town of Woodstock by the physical beauty of the mountains, streams, forests and/or the tranquil lifestyle of a small village. Others come to make pilgrimage to the music scene from the 1969 concert that was planned For many here but actually held 43 miles years Woodstock South West in the town of Bethel, has been known as New York. Some are drawn here spiritually, not by religion, but the Colony of the Arts by a belief in the Woodstock state of mind; peace, love and harmony in a natural, organic setting. But this year we celebrate Woodstock as Home for the Arts, dedicated to the creative individuals that have made Woodstock so culturally rich and enticing to those who seek uniqueness and rejuvenation. There are certain cities in the world that have an arts reputation: Paris, New York, Los Angeles; and fewer still, small towns e.g., Barbizon, France or Woodstock, New York. For many years, Woodstock has been known as the Colony of the Arts. The Byrdcliffe and Maverick art colonies, founded here in the early 20th century and the
Alan McKnight
forming of the Woodstock Artists Association in 1919 along with the Art Students League Summer School had much to do with the town’s growing reputation as a destination for artists. In 1969, The Woodstock Festival of 3
Music & Art cemented the name that most everyone in the world identifies with peace and music. It was the artists and art supporters that brought this on.
Paul McMahon
Famous and not-so-famous artists, musicians, writers, filmmakers, photographers, performers, potters, painters, metal and wood workers, singers, dancers and all other creative types have made Woodstock their home and our town is enriched by their being here. They create beauty, entertainment, education, music, and soul-satisfying pleasure, bringing millions in revenue from tourism for local shops and services. We salute them and support them, as they are the jewels of our town.
Paul McMahon
Artist, musician, writer, producer, inventor, and minister Paul McMahon is one eclectic artist who came to Woodstock in 1990 on a spiritual quest. After living and studying art in Pomona College in California and the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, he exhibited in top galleries and museums and produced events, performances, and music; presenting the first Laurie Anderson performance in Boston along with many other now famous but then not so famous artists. McMahon gave David Salle his first solo exhibition in the early ‘70s and was the assistant director at Artists Space, producing shows there and at Franklin Furnace and The Knitting Factory. His artwork was included in the 2009 Metropolitan Museum of Art’s “The Pictures Generation 1974-1984” exhibition. 4
He makes up instant
There are hundreds of artists songs which “magically in Woodstock who regularly give their work to support lo- seem to cure” problems cal artists and organizations, but Paul seems to always be giving. He has continued his art and music career in Woodstock through organizing numerous benefits for charitable organizations and people in need. As director and co-founder of the Woodstock Mothership, the “Everything Center for Changing Times”, McMahon sought to “improve the quality of life” and for 30 years (and ongoing) as a rock’n’roll therapist, he makes up instant songs which “magically seem to cure” problems. He performs locally and on radio and television. He produced the “Welcome to Woodstock” bumper stickers and other related products and was ordained an interfaith minister in 1996. Having lived for several years at the Mothership, McMahon was given $100,000 by a benefactor in 2013 to buy the house — a significant gift for this lifetime giver. Paul is the father of twin girls born in 2001 and he joined the Post Office the same year, assuring him of a regular paycheck. Similar stories of artists making a home here would make up a series of books covering shelves a mile long. Check out our Woodstock library, the Historical Society or the Woodstock Artists Association & Museum or visit WoodstockGuide.com online and click on “Musings’” for more info on Woodstock artists, and don’t forget to buy art in the galleries, cafes, banks, or shops. Take these treasures home with you and keep Woodstock in your heart. — Pat Horner Paul McMahon

If your inclination veers toward the unconventional, if your creative spirit thrives in freedom and natural beauty, then you are not alone. For over 100 years, artists from all over the world have found an enduring spiritual touchstone among the rolling hills and streams, craggy mountain No better place to discover cloves, pristine lakes, and & re-discover the joy leafy lanes of Woodstock.
of the arts
Woodstock stands apart as an almost mythical colony of the arts, the vitality of its founding artistic and social visionaries still echoing in the mountains around us, an enduring siren call to new and established artists of every age. And for those today who are attuned to Woodstock’s beckoning call, there is no better place to call home. No better place to discover and re-discover the joy of the arts. Nestled within the protected forests of the Catskill Mountain Preserve, Woodstock keeps the insidious influence of global consumerism soundly at bay. The drumbeat of rampant commercialism is replaced by the soul-awakening drumming of world class percussionists on the timeless Village Green.
Pam Ehrhardt
Far more than a destination, Woodstock is a welcome destiny for those who seek the psychic freedom of a true creative home. If you yearn to be guided by master artists of world renown or find your own contemplative way to truth with words 7
or images or song, then you are in good company here in Woodstock. The opportunity to explore the nuances of personal creativity, the heart of one’s art, is what this free-form colony of the arts is all about. The creative community here has established an enduring home that supports and challenges artists of every medium to rise to their finest work.
Kathleen McGuiness
Explore the abundance of Woodstock art studios and galleries tucked away in every imaginable space and place — converted barns, cabins, attics, restaurants, and shops. Attend a concert of freshly composed music at the Colony Café or Bearsville Theatre. Experience a Woodstock Library reading of new poetry from a writer who has just discovered her voice. Ponder exciting new prose at the Woodstock Writers Festival and savor your love of words. Celebrate the premiere of a labor of love by a fledgling filmmaker at the Woodstock Film Festival or simply relax into an evening of outdoor storytelling under the stars. 8
Take a studio class at the Enjoy the generosity of Woodstock artists, writers, Woodstock School of Art dancers, actors, musicians, or attend a gallery talk at photographers, filmmakers the Woodstock Artists and artist-makers of every medium as craft, technique Association & and inspiration are Museum shared, knowing that true community is built with every encounter between teacher and student, artist and audience. Take a studio class at the Woodstock School of Art or attend a gallery talk at the Woodstock Artists Association & Museum and you will discover that the best of New York City and San Francisco culture, the best of the world, finds itself comfortably at home in our quiet hamlet. And if you decide to stay, to fully surrender to the call of this beautiful place, you will become part of a community of vibrant artists who live this land and the seasons of their lives together. There is a vitality that comes when all rise up to celebrate the place they call home. The creative spirit flourishes here in Woodstock, mirroring our environment both inner and outer. Here, we share the same glorious summer or spectacularly colored autumn, face down a harsh winter or devastating storm. We come to honor those souls that have shaped our lives over the years as they pass on and, in true Woodstock spirit, welcome the new with anticipation and hope. For that is the foundation of our home here in Woodstock — the freedom to live our fullest lives and reflect that knowing in our art.

Home for the Arts
“Seated Figure” by Alexander Archipenko Z. Willy Neumann
Before the festival of ’69, Woodstock was already known as an art colony. Fueled by the Art Students League of New York City, it had a summer school with great teachers/artists. The Woodstock School of Art carries on that tradition today in the same location. The Maverick Colony expanded on this with its celebration of the arts in the dionysian Maverick Festivals each summer. Today, craftspeople are inheritors of the work of the Arts & Craft Movement of the Byrdcliffe Colony and continue this history with the Guild shop and other retail stores specializing in original crafts. The Woodstock Artists Association & Museum had their beginnings 95 years ago in the same location it is in today, the center of town. Artists and craftspeople have always been closely supportive of the community, supplying their work free 10
for silent auctions and other events for our many causes. As much as the musicians they help with their art and crafts to raise funds Artists & for groups and people in need.
craftspeople have
Because of the interaction always been closely of the arts with the commerce of the town, the supportive of the Chamber of Commerce added community... the words “and the Arts” officially to its name. This unique joining is very much an indication of how much the Arts are a vital part of the business community. It is another place where the arts are at home. An expression of the arts was also represented by the handmade houses built before the days of strict zoning laws. Woodstock Handmade Houses published by Ballantine Press showed the world the imagination artists can use to create their own living space. These homes reflected the spiritual & creative aspects of the town’s artists. Those that survive are still an inspiration.
Merideth Rosier
The Arts & the town are so intrinsically connected. I am reminded of the artists going to one another’s kitchens for the pot-luck meals during the economic depressed years of the ‘40s. We continue this tradition with Family’s Thanksgiving Feast, “a beggars banquet”, food coops, and stone soup get togethers since then. Food and the arts are also a big part of the community, with art openings at restaurants and art and photographs adorning the walls of most every cafe, bank, and business in town. — Barry Samuels 11

The most principled American of our lifetime, Pete Seeger passed away earlier this year at age 94. We admire his legacy for the same reason we aim for the ideals of “Woodstock”, because he was so committed to peace, love, justice, a deep connection to the power of song, concerns for the environment, and authenticity to one’s beliefs. If a single person has ever aspired to these standards, it is Pete. He devoted himself to the people of the world, influencing and inspiring them while He devoted himself to singing his own and others’ folk songs. the people of the world,
influencing and
Attending Harvard on inspiring them a scholarship, Pete joined the Young Communists League and sang peace songs with The Almanac Singers along with Woody Guthrie. After being drafted into the army during World War 2, he married Toshi Aline Ohta, a Japanese dancer he had met at a square dance in 1939, and while she kept the home, Pete traveled, singing more songs for peace.
Wendy Lines
In 1949 Seeger and Toshi bought land in Beacon, then a small town in the Hudson Valley, 60 miles north of New York city. On very little income, they built a home overlooking the Hudson River. Working and teaching banjo wherever possible, Pete dropped out of the Communist Party and joined the Weavers, a group that hit the charts and was offered a television show. Hating commercialism, he resigned from the group over a cigarette commercial. 13
Brian Lynch
The FBI and the Taft-Hartley Bill went after activists but Pete kept singing. During the ’50s when he was blacklisted, the only job he could get was at a summer camp in Woodland Valley, near Phoenicia (15 miles West of Woodstock), run by Toshi’s father. They lived in Woodstock, raising their children while Pete kept singing. The Cold War and Civil Rights Movement overlapped, and while picketers at college events protested against him because of his anti war beliefs, the attention helped him to sell more tickets. Pete seeded the “hootenanny” during the ’60s, Sailing against the current, Pete a precursor to kept the music and his ideals alive. the Woodstock Festival in ’69. Now the music will carry him. He believed that music helped with our problems and “if you love your country, you say something.” The Smothers Brothers stuck their necks out during the Vietnam War and put Pete on their TV show. More protests occurred, while Pete kept singing. Pete was a master at finding common cause. When the Hudson River became polluted with PCBs, he and Toshi started Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Inc. and built a 70 foot sloop, launched in 1969, the year of the Woodstock festival, to sail the Hudson with his message and songs. Sailing against the current, Pete kept the music and his ideals alive. Now the music will carry him. — Pat Horner
