Women in Business 2023

A celebration of the talented women that own (or work in) local businesses in and around the region

Sisters are doing it for themselves in North-West Brisbane (and Australia wide!), with a record number of women running their own small businesses. New figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show 12.1 per cent of the nation’s 5.9 million employed women are now their own boss. More than a third of all small businesses are run by women, and there’s a blooming world of networking, blogs and entrepreneurial women taking advantage of the trend.

‘If you look at women in particular, they are more formally educated and moving into their family forming years in their 30s, and they have invested more to prepare themselves, with more education, so they want to make sure they can continue a burgeoning career,’ social demographer Mark McCrindle explained. In this feature, we are celebrating some incredible local businesswomen who have taken a leap of faith and are making a name for themselves in small business. From Accountants to Cake Decorators, all these ladies are from truly diverse industries. We have also compiled an online ‘Mini Mag’ that contains all the ladies from this edition, so head online to have a read on our website at www.echo-news.com.au Edition two of Women in Business will be showcased in the upcoming June edition. If you are a local lady who would like to be featured, contact admin@ echo-news.com.au

Just like this epic Women in Business feature, Echo News will be publishing a MEN In Business showcase in the JULY edition. Spots are limited! For more information, contact admin@echo-news.com.au

Hayley Grant

Meet Hayley Grant, founder of HMG Home Loans

based in beautiful Samford.

Upon finishing high school in 1995, Hayley had big dreams of joining the police force and began studies to make this a reality.

Whilst studying, Hayley started a part time job with Suncorp Bank and soon became a revered member of the team impressing each and every executive as she climbed the corporate ladder. Ultimately, this saw Hayley becoming a Lending Manager at Chermside - one of Suncorp's busiest branches in Brisbane. This was the beginning of an unforeseen career in finance.

After 15 years with Suncorp, and many national awards as a Lending Manager, she took a massive leap (along with many sleepless nights) and started her own company - HMG Home Loans. She was 32, single and had just purchased a home in Hamilton. Talk about pressure! It was the unknown, the lack of a stable income (and only income) and starting a business from scratch.

In her first year as a Mortgage Broker, Hayley won the 'New Broker of the Year' award at a national conference. This was to be the start of many award recognitions for the hard work she has put into establishing and running this successful business solo.

Fast forward to 2023, Hayley is a mother of two, Charlotte (8) and Cooper (5). She continues to run her business full time from home and is actively involved in the kids’ school and the local community. She was recently recognised for these efforts and awarded the Peter Dutton 2023 Dickson Community Service Award on Australia Day. After 28 years in finance, Hayley still loves what she does and derives joy and satisfaction from helping clients achieve their financial goals whilst guiding them along the way. Contact Hayley today on the details below for more information regarding her services.

Sprinkling sweetness around the region.

Mother of two and wife to husband Rob who also runs a community group ‘Run With Rob’, Warner local Richelle Hopkinson founded Sprinkles N Cookies almost two years ago amidst the COVID epidemic.

After almost 20 years working as a Radiation Therapist, Richelle felt the pressures of working as essential worker during COVID, causing her to re-evaluate what made her happy.

"Working in the cancer treatment area is rewarding, however very emotionally draining and very medical. I have always had a passion for creating, so, I ended up turning my weekend hobby of baking and creating for my loved ones into a side business, which still continues to bring me joy and balance with family and home life," said Richelle.

After founding Sprinkles N Cookies, the business quickly gathered momentum leading to lots of community connections, sales, and smiles.

Richelle is now renowned for her delightful vanilla cookies that don’t only look heavenly, but taste like it, too with regulars even allowing her to be part of their annual family celebrations. Furthermore, Richelle has been recognised by the Australian Cake Artists and Decorators Association for her incredible creations and has been nominated for the 'best new cookie artist' in this years awards.

But Sprinkles N Cookies isn't just any baking business as they bake and decorate not only fondant, but also royal icing cookies. There are only a few cookies artists in the Moreton Bay Council region licensed to sell royal icing cookies due to the stringent licensing procedure -and Sprinkles N Cookies is one of them! Stay tuned for classes, to learn how to decorate and make your very own cookies!

Georgia Wright

As a young, aspiring writer who dreams for the moon, Georgia Wright has certainly already begun to rattle the stars. A published author, journalist, digital editor, copy writer, and proof-reader at age 19, this girl doesn’t muck around.

Perhaps it was her childhood love of books that lit the fire in her belly to produce stories of her own. Perhaps it was the fact that 7-year-old Georgia was promised by all her teachers that her talent for writing would make her famous someday. Admittedly, it was both. Either way, by the time she had reached Year 11 at Wavell State High School, all the students knew her name, and everyone knew she had put a book on the library’s shelves.

‘Love Hurts’, Georgia’s debut novel—a witty and romantic coming-of-age tale—was co-published by the author herself and InHouse Publishing in 2020, right in the thick of COVID-19. It became quite the local hit within the community!

For work experience in Year 10, Georgia chose to jump aboard The Echo News ship for the week. The team liked her enough to keep her around, and ever since, her role at the Echo has only grown. From producing journalistic work for the company, to then also proofreading the publications, to securing the position as Digital Editor for The Little Echo, Georgia’s contribution is never-ending. Currently studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Major in Creative Writing and a Minor in Journalism at Queensland University of Technology, Georgia is working hard in all departments to set up her future. Just this month, she secured an internship at the 4ZZZ radio station, where she now produces news stories to present on the radio each Thursday (tune in if you dare!). This way, she can gain a wider range of real-world journalism experience before graduating next year.

What’s more, Georgia offers freelance journalism services to businesses and individuals. She hopes to turn these services into her own business one day, with novel writing to be her side hustle. Until then, she will continue climbing up in the world from publication to publication. Star to star.
